वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु राज्ञा स विदुरो बुद्धिसत्तमः ।
धृतराष्ट्रमुपेत्येदं वाक्यमाह महार्थवत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu rājñā sa viduro buddhisattamaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramupetyedaṁ vākyamāha mahārthavat.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Thus addressed by the king, that Vidura, who was foremost among the wise, approached Dhṛtarāṣṭra and spoke these words of great significance."
उक्तो युधिष्ठिरो राजा भवद्वचनमादितः ।
स च संश्रुत्य वाक्यं ते प्रशशंस महाद्युतिः ॥२॥
2. ukto yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bhavadvacanamāditaḥ ,
sa ca saṁśrutya vākyaṁ te praśaśaṁsa mahādyutiḥ.
2. uktaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā bhavat vacanam āditaḥ
saḥ ca saṃśrutya vākyam te praśaśaṃsa mahādyutiḥ
2. rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhavat vacanam āditaḥ uktaḥ
saḥ ca mahādyutiḥ te vākyam saṃśrutya praśaśaṃsa
2. King Yudhiṣṭhira was conveyed your words from the very beginning. And he, the greatly glorious one, having properly heard your statement, praised it.
बीभत्सुश्च महातेजा निवेदयति ते गृहान् ।
वसु तस्य गृहे यच्च प्राणानपि च केवलान् ॥३॥
3. bībhatsuśca mahātejā nivedayati te gṛhān ,
vasu tasya gṛhe yacca prāṇānapi ca kevalān.
3. Bībhatsuḥ ca mahātejāḥ nivedayati te gṛhān
vasu tasya gṛhe yat ca prāṇān api ca kevalān
3. mahātejāḥ Bībhatsuḥ ca te gṛhān tasya gṛhe
yat vasu ca kevalān prāṇān api ca nivedayati
3. And the greatly energetic Arjuna (Bībhatsu) offers to you your houses, and all the wealth that is in his dwelling, and indeed, even his very life.
धर्मराजश्च पुत्रस्ते राज्यं प्राणान्धनानि च ।
अनुजानाति राजर्षे यच्चान्यदपि किंचन ॥४॥
4. dharmarājaśca putraste rājyaṁ prāṇāndhanāni ca ,
anujānāti rājarṣe yaccānyadapi kiṁcana.
4. Dharmarājaḥ ca putraḥ te rājyam prāṇān dhanāni
ca anujānāti rājarṣe yat ca anyat api kiñcana
4. te putraḥ Dharmarājaḥ ca rājarṣe rājyam prāṇān
dhanāni ca yat anyat api kiñcana anujānāti
4. And your son, Yudhiṣṭhira (Dharmarāja), O royal sage, grants you the kingdom, his life, and wealth, and also anything else whatsoever.
भीमस्तु सर्वदुःखानि संस्मृत्य बहुलान्युत ।
कृच्छ्रादिव महाबाहुरनुमन्ये विनिःश्वसन् ॥५॥
5. bhīmastu sarvaduḥkhāni saṁsmṛtya bahulānyuta ,
kṛcchrādiva mahābāhuranumanye viniḥśvasan.
5. Bhīmaḥ tu sarvaduḥkhāni saṃsmṛtya bahulāni uta
kṛcchrāt iva mahābāhuḥ anumanye viniḥśvasan
5. tu mahābāhuḥ Bhīmaḥ bahulāni sarvaduḥkhāni
saṃsmṛtya uta kṛcchrāt iva viniḥśvasan anumanye
5. But the mighty-armed Bhīma, having thoroughly recalled all the numerous sufferings, sighs as if with great difficulty, and I infer his consent.
स राज्ञा धर्मशीलेन भ्रात्रा बीभत्सुना तथा ।
अनुनीतो महाबाहुः सौहृदे स्थापितोऽपि च ॥६॥
6. sa rājñā dharmaśīlena bhrātrā bībhatsunā tathā ,
anunīto mahābāhuḥ sauhṛde sthāpito'pi ca.
6. saḥ rājñā dharmaśīlena bhrātrā Bībhatsunā tathā
anunītaḥ mahābāhuḥ sauhṛde sthāpitaḥ api ca
6. saḥ mahābāhuḥ rājñā dharmaśīlena bhrātrā
Bībhatsunā tathā anunītaḥ ca sauhṛde api sthāpitaḥ
6. That mighty-armed one (Bhīma) was conciliated by the king whose conduct aligns with natural law (dharma), and by his brother Arjuna (Bībhatsu), and was also established in friendship.
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्य इति त्वां प्राह धर्मराट् ।
संस्मृत्य भीमस्तद्वैरं यदन्यायवदाचरेत् ॥७॥
7. na ca manyustvayā kārya iti tvāṁ prāha dharmarāṭ ,
saṁsmṛtya bhīmastadvairaṁ yadanyāyavadācaret.
7. na ca manyuḥ tvayā kāryaḥ iti tvām prāha dharmarāṭ
saṃsmṛtya bhīmaḥ tat vairam yat an-yāyavat ā-caret
7. And the king of (dharma) (dharma-rāṭ) told you, 'You should not be angry,' because Bhima, remembering that hostility, might act unjustly.
एवंप्रायो हि धर्मोऽयं क्षत्रियाणां नराधिप ।
युद्धे क्षत्रियधर्मे च निरतोऽयं वृकोदरः ॥८॥
8. evaṁprāyo hi dharmo'yaṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ narādhipa ,
yuddhe kṣatriyadharme ca nirato'yaṁ vṛkodaraḥ.
8. evaṃ-prāyaḥ hi dharmaḥ ayam kṣatriyāṇām narādhipa
yuddhe kṣatriya-dharme ca nirataḥ ayam vṛkodaraḥ
8. O king of men, such indeed is this natural law (dharma) for Kshatriyas. And this Vrikodara (Bhīma) is engaged in battle and in the martial code (dharma) of a Kshatriya.
वृकोदरकृते चाहमर्जुनश्च पुनः पुनः ।
प्रसादयाव नृपते भवान्प्रभुरिहास्ति यत् ॥९॥
9. vṛkodarakṛte cāhamarjunaśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
prasādayāva nṛpate bhavānprabhurihāsti yat.
9. vṛkodara-kṛte ca aham arjunaḥ ca punaḥ punaḥ
prasādayāva nṛpate bhavān prabhuḥ iha asti yat
9. And for the sake of Vrikodara (Bhīma), I and Arjuna repeatedly seek your favor, O king, because you are indeed the master here.
प्रददातु भवान्वित्तं यावदिच्छसि पार्थिव ।
त्वमीश्वरो नो राज्यस्य प्राणानां चेति भारत ॥१०॥
10. pradadātu bhavānvittaṁ yāvadicchasi pārthiva ,
tvamīśvaro no rājyasya prāṇānāṁ ceti bhārata.
10. pradadātu bhavān vittam yāvat icchasi pārthiva
tvam īśvaraḥ naḥ rājyasya prāṇānām ca iti bhārata
10. May you bestow as much wealth as you desire, O ruler of earth (pārthiva), for you are the master of our kingdom and our very lives, O descendant of Bhārata (bhārata).
ब्रह्मदेयाग्रहारांश्च पुत्राणां चौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ।
इतो रत्नानि गाश्चैव दासीदासमजाविकम् ॥११॥
11. brahmadeyāgrahārāṁśca putrāṇāṁ caurdhvadehikam ,
ito ratnāni gāścaiva dāsīdāsamajāvikam.
11. brahmadeya-agrahārān ca putrāṇām ca ūrdhvadehikam
itaḥ ratnāni gāḥ ca eva dāsīdāsam ajāvikam
11. itaḥ brahmadeya-agrahārān ca putrāṇām ūrdhvadehikam
ca ratnāni gāḥ ca eva dāsīdāsam ajāvikam
11. From here, he should bring the land grants to Brahmins, and the funeral rites for the sons, along with jewels, cows, female and male servants, goats, and sheep.
आनयित्वा कुरुश्रेष्ठो ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयच्छतु ।
दीनान्धकृपणेभ्यश्च तत्र तत्र नृपाज्ञया ॥१२॥
12. ānayitvā kuruśreṣṭho brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchatu ,
dīnāndhakṛpaṇebhyaśca tatra tatra nṛpājñayā.
12. ānayitvā kuru-śreṣṭhaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchatu
dīna-andha-kṛpaṇebhyaḥ ca tatra tatra nṛpa-ājñayā
12. kuru-śreṣṭhaḥ ānayitvā brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca
dīna-andha-kṛpaṇebhyaḥ tatra tatra nṛpa-ājñayā prayacchatu
12. Having brought all these (items), O best of Kurus, he should distribute them to the Brahmins and to the poor, blind, and destitute in various places, as commanded by the king.
बह्वन्नरसपानाढ्याः सभा विदुर कारय ।
गवां निपानान्यन्यच्च विविधं पुण्यकर्म यत् ॥१३॥
13. bahvannarasapānāḍhyāḥ sabhā vidura kāraya ,
gavāṁ nipānānyanyacca vividhaṁ puṇyakarma yat.
13. bahu-anna-rasa-pāna-āḍhyāḥ sabhāḥ vidura kāraya
gavām nipānāni anyat ca vividham puṇya-karma yat
13. vidura bahu-anna-rasa-pāna-āḍhyāḥ sabhāḥ kāraya ca
gavām nipānāni ca anyat yat vividham puṇya-karma (ca)
13. O Vidura, have assembly halls constructed, well-supplied with abundant food, juices, and drinks, and also (create) watering holes for cows, and any other various virtuous actions.
इति मामब्रवीद्राजा पार्थश्चैव धनंजयः ।
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१४॥
14. iti māmabravīdrājā pārthaścaiva dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
yadatrānantaraṁ kāryaṁ tadbhavānvaktumarhati.
14. iti mām abravīt rājā pārthaḥ ca eva dhanaṃjayaḥ
yat atra anantaram kāryam tat bhavān vaktum arhati
14. rājā ca pārthaḥ eva dhanaṃjayaḥ iti mām abravīt
atra yat anantaram kāryam tat bhavān vaktum arhati
14. Thus spoke the king to me, as did Pārtha (Arjuna), also known as Dhanañjaya. Whatever further action is to be taken in this matter, you are capable of stating that.
इत्युक्तो विदुरेणाथ धृतराष्ट्रोऽभिनन्द्य तत् ।
मनश्चक्रे महादाने कार्त्तिक्यां जनमेजय ॥१५॥
15. ityukto vidureṇātha dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhinandya tat ,
manaścakre mahādāne kārttikyāṁ janamejaya.
15. iti uktaḥ vidureṇa atha dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abhinandya
tat manaḥ cakre mahādāne kārttikyām janamejaya
15. janamejaya vidureṇa iti uktaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tat
abhinandya atha manaḥ mahādāne cakre kārttikyām
15. O Janamejaya, when Vidura thus spoke, Dhritarashtra, having welcomed that advice, then resolved upon a great act of giving on the full moon day of Kārtika.
