वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः कतिपयाहस्य तस्मिन्रैवतके गिरौ ।
वृष्ण्यन्धकानामभवत्सुमहानुत्सवो नृप ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ katipayāhasya tasminraivatake girau ,
vṛṣṇyandhakānāmabhavatsumahānutsavo nṛpa.

girau vṛṣṇyandhakānām abhavat sumahān utsavaḥ nṛpa
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, "Then, O King, after a few days, a very grand festival for the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas took place on Mount Raivataka."
तत्र दानं ददुर्वीरा ब्राह्मणानां सहस्रशः ।
भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकाश्चैव महे तस्य गिरेस्तदा ॥२॥
2. tatra dānaṁ dadurvīrā brāhmaṇānāṁ sahasraśaḥ ,
bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāścaiva mahe tasya girestadā.
2. tatra dānam daduḥ vīrāḥ brāhmaṇānām sahasraśaḥ
bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāḥ ca eva mahe tasya gireḥ tadā
2. Then, at that great celebration on that mountain, heroic warriors, specifically the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, gave thousands of gifts (dāna) to the Brahmins.
प्रासादै रत्नचित्रैश्च गिरेस्तस्य समन्ततः ।
स देशः शोभितो राजन्दीपवृक्षैश्च सर्वशः ॥३॥
3. prāsādai ratnacitraiśca girestasya samantataḥ ,
sa deśaḥ śobhito rājandīpavṛkṣaiśca sarvaśaḥ.
3. prāsādaiḥ ratnacitraiḥ ca gireḥ tasya samantataḥ
sa deśaḥ śobhitaḥ rājan dīpavṛkṣaiḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
3. O King, that entire region around the mountain was adorned everywhere with jewel-studded palaces and with lamp-trees.
वादित्राणि च तत्र स्म वादकाः समवादयन् ।
ननृतुर्नर्तकाश्चैव जगुर्गानानि गायनाः ॥४॥
4. vāditrāṇi ca tatra sma vādakāḥ samavādayan ,
nanṛturnartakāścaiva jagurgānāni gāyanāḥ.

nanṛtuḥ nartakāḥ ca eva jaguḥ gānāni gāyanāḥ
4. And there, musicians played musical instruments, dancers danced, and singers sang songs.
अलंकृताः कुमाराश्च वृष्णीनां सुमहौजसः ।
यानैर्हाटकचित्राङ्गैश्चञ्चूर्यन्ते स्म सर्वशः ॥५॥
5. alaṁkṛtāḥ kumārāśca vṛṣṇīnāṁ sumahaujasaḥ ,
yānairhāṭakacitrāṅgaiścañcūryante sma sarvaśaḥ.
5. alaṅkṛtāḥ kumārāḥ ca vṛṣṇīnām su-mahaujasaḥ
yānaiḥ hāṭakacitrāṅgaiḥ cañcūryante sma sarvaśaḥ
5. And the greatly powerful princes of the Vṛṣṇis, who were splendidly adorned, traveled around everywhere in vehicles whose parts were ornamented with gold.
पौराश्च पादचारेण यानैरुच्चावचैस्तथा ।
सदाराः सानुयात्राश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥६॥
6. paurāśca pādacāreṇa yānairuccāvacaistathā ,
sadārāḥ sānuyātrāśca śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
6. paurāḥ ca pādacāreṇa yānaiḥ uccāvacaiḥ tathā
sadārāḥ sānuyātrāḥ ca śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
6. And the citizens, on foot and in various conveyances, accompanied by their wives and entourages, by hundreds and then by thousands.
ततो हलधरः क्षीबो रेवतीसहितः प्रभुः ।
अनुगम्यमानो गन्धर्वैरचरत्तत्र भारत ॥७॥
7. tato haladharaḥ kṣībo revatīsahitaḥ prabhuḥ ,
anugamyamāno gandharvairacarattatra bhārata.
7. tataḥ haladharaḥ kṣībaḥ revatīsahitaḥ prabhuḥ
anugamyamānaḥ gandharvaiḥ acarat tatra bhārata
7. Then, the lord Balarama (haladhara), intoxicated and accompanied by Revati, roamed there, followed by Gandharvas, O Bhārata.
तथैव राजा वृष्णीनामुग्रसेनः प्रतापवान् ।
उपगीयमानो गन्धर्वैः स्त्रीसहस्रसहायवान् ॥८॥
8. tathaiva rājā vṛṣṇīnāmugrasenaḥ pratāpavān ,
upagīyamāno gandharvaiḥ strīsahasrasahāyavān.
8. tathā eva rājā vṛṣṇīnām ugrasenaḥ pratāpavān
upagīyamānaḥ gandharvaiḥ strī-sahasra-sahāyavān
8. Similarly, the powerful King Ugrasena of the Vṛṣṇis, being serenaded by Gandharvas, was accompanied by a thousand women.
रौक्मिणेयश्च साम्बश्च क्षीबौ समरदुर्मदौ ।
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरौ विजह्रातेऽमराविव ॥९॥
9. raukmiṇeyaśca sāmbaśca kṣībau samaradurmadau ,
divyamālyāmbaradharau vijahrāte'marāviva.
9. raukmiṇeyaḥ ca sāmbhaḥ ca kṣībau samara-durmadau
divya-mālya-ambara-dharau vijahrāte amarau iva
9. And Rukmiṇeya (Pradyumna) and Sāmba, both intoxicated and fierce in battle, adorned with divine garlands and garments, sported like two immortals.
अक्रूरः सारणश्चैव गदो भानुर्विडूरथः ।
निशठश्चारुदेष्णश्च पृथुर्विपृथुरेव च ॥१०॥
10. akrūraḥ sāraṇaścaiva gado bhānurviḍūrathaḥ ,
niśaṭhaścārudeṣṇaśca pṛthurvipṛthureva ca.
10. akrūraḥ sāraṇaḥ ca eva gadaḥ bhānuḥ viḍūrathaḥ
niśaṭhaḥ ca cārudeṣṇaḥ ca pṛthuḥ vipṛthuḥ eva ca
10. Akrūra, Sāraṇa, Gada, Bhānu, Viḍūratha, Niśaṭha, Cārudeṣṇa, Pṛthu, and Vipṛthu were also present.
सत्यकः सात्यकिश्चैव भङ्गकारसहाचरौ ।
हार्दिक्यः कृतवर्मा च ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः ॥११॥
11. satyakaḥ sātyakiścaiva bhaṅgakārasahācarau ,
hārdikyaḥ kṛtavarmā ca ye cānye nānukīrtitāḥ.
11. satyakaḥ sātyakiḥ ca eva bhaṅgakārasahācarau
hārdikyaḥ kṛtavarmā ca ye ca anye na anukīrtitāḥ
11. Satyaka, Sātyaki, and also Bhaṅgakāra and Sahācara, Hārdikya and Kṛtavarmā, and others who have not been mentioned.
एते परिवृताः स्त्रीभिर्गन्धर्वैश्च पृथक्पृथक् ।
तमुत्सवं रैवतके शोभयां चक्रिरे तदा ॥१२॥
12. ete parivṛtāḥ strībhirgandharvaiśca pṛthakpṛthak ,
tamutsavaṁ raivatake śobhayāṁ cakrire tadā.
12. ete parivṛtāḥ strībhiḥ gandharvaiḥ ca pṛthakpṛthak
tam utsavam raivatake śobhayām cakrire tadā
12. These (chiefs), surrounded separately by women and Gandharvas, then graced that festival at Raivataka (mountain).
तदा कोलाहले तस्मिन्वर्तमाने महाशुभे ।
वासुदेवश्च पार्थश्च सहितौ परिजग्मतुः ॥१३॥
13. tadā kolāhale tasminvartamāne mahāśubhe ,
vāsudevaśca pārthaśca sahitau parijagmatuḥ.
13. tadā kolāhale tasmin vartamāne mahāśubhe
vāsudevaḥ ca pārthaḥ ca sahitau parijagmatuḥ
13. Then, while that greatly auspicious festivity was going on, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and Pārtha (Arjuna) proceeded together.
तत्र चङ्क्रम्यमाणौ तौ वसुदेवसुतां शुभाम् ।
अलंकृतां सखीमध्ये भद्रां ददृशतुस्तदा ॥१४॥
14. tatra caṅkramyamāṇau tau vasudevasutāṁ śubhām ,
alaṁkṛtāṁ sakhīmadhye bhadrāṁ dadṛśatustadā.
14. tatra caṅkramyamāṇau tau vasudevasutām śubhām
alaṅkṛtām sakhīmadhye bhadrām dadṛśatuḥ tadā
14. Then, while those two were roaming there, they saw Bhadrā, the beautiful daughter of Vasudeva, adorned among her female friends.
दृष्ट्वैव तामर्जुनस्य कन्दर्पः समजायत ।
तं तथैकाग्रमनसं कृष्णः पार्थमलक्षयत् ॥१५॥
15. dṛṣṭvaiva tāmarjunasya kandarpaḥ samajāyata ,
taṁ tathaikāgramanasaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ pārthamalakṣayat.
15. dṛṣṭvā eva tām arjunasya kandarpaḥ samajāyata
tam tathā ekāgramanasam kṛṣṇaḥ pārtham alakṣayat
15. Just by seeing her, desire (kāma) arose in Arjuna. Krishna noticed Pārtha (Arjuna) with his mind thus intently focused.
अथाब्रवीत्पुष्कराक्षः प्रहसन्निव भारत ।
वनेचरस्य किमिदं कामेनालोड्यते मनः ॥१६॥
16. athābravītpuṣkarākṣaḥ prahasanniva bhārata ,
vanecarasya kimidaṁ kāmenāloḍyate manaḥ.
16. atha abravīt puṣkarākṣaḥ prahasan iva bhārata
vanacarasya kim idam kāmena āloḍyate manaḥ
16. Then, O Bhārata, the lotus-eyed one (Krishna) spoke, as if laughing, 'Why is this mind of a forest-dweller agitated by desire (kāma)?'
ममैषा भगिनी पार्थ सारणस्य सहोदरा ।
यदि ते वर्तते बुद्धिर्वक्ष्यामि पितरं स्वयम् ॥१७॥
17. mamaiṣā bhaginī pārtha sāraṇasya sahodarā ,
yadi te vartate buddhirvakṣyāmi pitaraṁ svayam.
17. mama eṣā bhaginī pārtha sāraṇasya sahodarā yadi
te vartate buddhiḥ vakṣyāmi pitaram svayam
17. O Pārtha, this is my sister, the uterine sister of Sāraṇa. If you have the intention [to marry her], I will speak to my father myself.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
दुहिता वसुदेवस्य वासुदेवस्य च स्वसा ।
रूपेण चैव संपन्ना कमिवैषा न मोहयेत् ॥१८॥
18. arjuna uvāca ,
duhitā vasudevasya vāsudevasya ca svasā ,
rūpeṇa caiva saṁpannā kamivaiṣā na mohayet.
18. arjuna uvāca duhitā vasudevasya vāsudevasya ca
svasā rūpeṇa ca eva sampannā kam iva eṣā na mohayet
18. Arjuna said, 'She is the daughter of Vasudeva and the sister of Vasudeva (Krishna). Endowed with such beauty, who indeed would she not enchant?'
कृतमेव तु कल्याणं सर्वं मम भवेद्ध्रुवम् ।
यदि स्यान्मम वार्ष्णेयी महिषीयं स्वसा तव ॥१९॥
19. kṛtameva tu kalyāṇaṁ sarvaṁ mama bhaveddhruvam ,
yadi syānmama vārṣṇeyī mahiṣīyaṁ svasā tava.
19. kṛtam eva tu kalyāṇaṃ sarvaṃ mama bhavet dhruvam
| yadi syāt mama vārṣṇeyī mahiṣī iyaṃ svasā tava
19. Certainly, all prosperity would be truly mine if this Vārṣṇeyī, your sister, were to become my chief queen.
प्राप्तौ तु क उपायः स्यात्तद्ब्रवीहि जनार्दन ।
आस्थास्यामि तथा सर्वं यदि शक्यं नरेण तत् ॥२०॥
20. prāptau tu ka upāyaḥ syāttadbravīhi janārdana ,
āsthāsyāmi tathā sarvaṁ yadi śakyaṁ nareṇa tat.
20. prāptau tu ka upāyaḥ syāt tat bravīhi janārdana
| āsthāsyāmi tathā sarvaṃ yadi śakyam nareṇa tat
20. Janārdana (Krishna), tell me what means there might be to obtain her. I will diligently undertake everything, if that is something possible for a man.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
स्वयंवरः क्षत्रियाणां विवाहः पुरुषर्षभ ।
स च संशयितः पार्थ स्वभावस्यानिमित्ततः ॥२१॥
21. vāsudeva uvāca ,
svayaṁvaraḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ vivāhaḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
sa ca saṁśayitaḥ pārtha svabhāvasyānimittataḥ.
21. vāsudeva uvāca | svayaṃvaraḥ kṣatriyāṇām vivāhaḥ puruṣarṣabha
| saḥ ca saṃśayitaḥ pārtha svabhāvasya animittataḥ
21. Vāsudeva (Krishna) said, 'O best among men (Arjuna), a self-choice (svayaṃvara) is the [proper] marriage for kṣatriyas. But that [method], O Pārtha (Arjuna), is uncertain due to its unpredictable nature.'
प्रसह्य हरणं चापि क्षत्रियाणां प्रशस्यते ।
विवाहहेतोः शूराणामिति धर्मविदो विदुः ॥२२॥
22. prasahya haraṇaṁ cāpi kṣatriyāṇāṁ praśasyate ,
vivāhahetoḥ śūrāṇāmiti dharmavido viduḥ.
22. prasahya haraṇam ca api kṣatriyāṇām praśasyate
vivāhahetoḥ śūrāṇām iti dharmavidaḥ viduḥ
22. Even forceful abduction is praised for Kṣatriyas when it is for the purpose of marriage; thus, those who know the natural law (dharma) declare.
स त्वमर्जुन कल्याणीं प्रसह्य भगिनीं मम ।
हर स्वयंवरे ह्यस्याः को वै वेद चिकीर्षितम् ॥२३॥
23. sa tvamarjuna kalyāṇīṁ prasahya bhaginīṁ mama ,
hara svayaṁvare hyasyāḥ ko vai veda cikīrṣitam.
23. saḥ tvam arjuna kalyāṇīm prasahya bhaginīm mama
hara svayaṃvare hi asyāḥ kaḥ vai veda cikirṣitam
23. Therefore, Arjuna, you should forcibly abduct my auspicious sister during her self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara); for who, indeed, knows her true desire?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽर्जुनश्च कृष्णश्च विनिश्चित्येतिकृत्यताम् ।
शीघ्रगान्पुरुषान्राजन्प्रेषयामासतुस्तदा ॥२४॥
24. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'rjunaśca kṛṣṇaśca viniścityetikṛtyatām ,
śīghragānpuruṣānrājanpreṣayāmāsatustadā.
24. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ arjunaḥ ca kṛṣṇaḥ ca viniścitya
iti kṛtyatām śīghragān puruṣān rājan preṣayāmāsatuḥ tadā
24. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa, having determined what needed to be done, dispatched swift-moving men, O King, at that time.
धर्मराजाय तत्सर्वमिन्द्रप्रस्थगताय वै ।
श्रुत्वैव च महाबाहुरनुजज्ञे स पाण्डवः ॥२५॥
25. dharmarājāya tatsarvamindraprasthagatāya vai ,
śrutvaiva ca mahābāhuranujajñe sa pāṇḍavaḥ.
25. dharmarājāya tat sarvam indraprasthagatāya vai
śrutvā eva ca mahābāhuḥ anujajñe saḥ pāṇḍavaḥ
25. And all that (message) was for Dharmarāja, who had gone to Indraprastha. Indeed, that great-armed Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira), having heard it, then gave his consent.
