युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
क्लिश्यमानेषु भूतेषु तैस्तैर्भावैस्ततस्ततः ।
दुर्गाण्यतितरेद्येन तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kliśyamāneṣu bhūteṣu taistairbhāvaistatastataḥ ,
durgāṇyatitaredyena tanme brūhi pitāmaha.

taiḥ taiḥ bhāvaiḥ tataḥ tataḥ,

pitāmaha,
brūhi.
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'When living beings (bhūta) are suffering from various afflictions in many places, tell me, O Grandfather, the means by which one may overcome these difficulties (durga).'
भीष्म उवाच ।
आश्रमेषु यथोक्तेषु यथोक्तं ये द्विजातयः ।
वर्तन्ते संयतात्मानो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
āśrameṣu yathokteṣu yathoktaṁ ye dvijātayaḥ ,
vartante saṁyatātmāno durgāṇyatitaranti te.

dvijātayaḥ vartante saṃyatātmānaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
2. Bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
Ye dvijātayaḥ,
yā ukteṣu āśrameṣu yathā uktam vartante (ca) saṃyatātmānaḥ (santi),
te durgāṇi atitaranti.
2. Bhīṣma said: 'Those who are twice-born (dvija), who live in the prescribed stages of life (āśrama) exactly as enjoined, and whose selves (ātman) are disciplined - they overcome difficulties (durga).'
ये दम्भान्न जपन्ति स्म येषां वृत्तिश्च संवृता ।
विषयांश्च निगृह्णन्ति दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥३॥
3. ye dambhānna japanti sma yeṣāṁ vṛttiśca saṁvṛtā ,
viṣayāṁśca nigṛhṇanti durgāṇyatitaranti te.
3. ye dambhāt na japanti sma yeṣām vṛttiḥ ca saṃvṛtā
viṣayān ca nigṛhṇanti durgāṇi atitaranti te
3. Ye dambhāt na japanti sma,
yeṣām vṛttiḥ ca saṃvṛtā (asti),
ye (ca) viṣayān nigṛhṇanti,
te durgāṇi atitaranti.
3. Those who do not engage in chanting (japa) out of hypocrisy, whose livelihood is well-controlled, and who restrain their sense objects - they overcome difficulties (durga).
वासयन्त्यतिथीन्नित्यं नित्यं ये चानसूयकाः ।
नित्यं स्वाध्यायशीलाश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥४॥
4. vāsayantyatithīnnityaṁ nityaṁ ye cānasūyakāḥ ,
nityaṁ svādhyāyaśīlāśca durgāṇyatitaranti te.
4. vāsayanti atithīn nityam nityam ye ca anasūyakāḥ
nityam svādhyāyaśīlāḥ ca durgāṇi atitaranti te
4. ye nityam atithīn vāsayanti ca nityam anasūyakāḥ
ca nityam svādhyāyaśīlāḥ te durgāṇi atitaranti
4. Those who constantly host guests, and who are always free from envy, and who are regularly devoted to self-study (svādhyāya), they overcome all difficulties.
मातापित्रोश्च ये वृत्तिं वर्तन्ते धर्मकोविदाः ।
वर्जयन्ति दिवास्वप्नं दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥५॥
5. mātāpitrośca ye vṛttiṁ vartante dharmakovidāḥ ,
varjayanti divāsvapnaṁ durgāṇyatitaranti te.
5. mātāpitroḥ ca ye vṛttim vartante dharmakovidāḥ
varjayanti divāsvapnam durgāṇi atitaranti te
5. ca ye dharmakovidāḥ mātāpitroḥ vṛttim vartante

5. And those who, being experts in natural law (dharma), fulfill their duty (vṛtti) towards their mother and father, and avoid sleeping during the day, they overcome all difficulties.
स्वेषु दारेषु वर्तन्ते न्यायवृत्तेष्वृतावृतौ ।
अग्निहोत्रपराः सन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥६॥
6. sveṣu dāreṣu vartante nyāyavṛtteṣvṛtāvṛtau ,
agnihotraparāḥ santo durgāṇyatitaranti te.
6. sveṣu dāreṣu vartante nyāyavṛtteṣu ṛtau ṛtau
agnihotraparāḥ santaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
6. ye sveṣu dāreṣu nyāyavṛtteṣu ṛtau ṛtau vartante
agnihotraparāḥ santaḥ te durgāṇi atitaranti
6. Those who live with righteous conduct towards their own wives, engaging at the appropriate times, and who are devoted to the Agnihotra ritual, they overcome all difficulties.
ये न लोभान्नयन्त्यर्थान्राजानो रजसावृताः ।
विषयान्परिरक्षन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥७॥
7. ye na lobhānnayantyarthānrājāno rajasāvṛtāḥ ,
viṣayānparirakṣanto durgāṇyatitaranti te.
7. ye na lobhāt nayanti arthān rājānaḥ rajasā āvṛtāḥ
viṣayān parirakṣantaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
7. ye rājānaḥ rajasā āvṛtāḥ na lobhāt arthān nayanti
viṣayān parirakṣantaḥ te durgāṇi atitaranti
7. Those kings who, though potentially influenced by passion (rajas), do not acquire wealth out of greed, but instead protect their subjects (viṣaya), they overcome all difficulties.
आहवेषु च ये शूरास्त्यक्त्वा मरणजं भयम् ।
धर्मेण जयमिच्छन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥८॥
8. āhaveṣu ca ye śūrāstyaktvā maraṇajaṁ bhayam ,
dharmeṇa jayamicchanto durgāṇyatitaranti te.
8. āhaveṣu ca ye śūrāḥ tyaktvā maraṇajam bhayam
dharmeṇa jayam icchantaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
8. ye ca śūrāḥ āhaveṣu maraṇajam bhayam tyaktvā
dharmeṇa jayam icchantaḥ te durgāṇi atitaranti
8. And those brave warriors who, in battles, abandon the fear born of death and desire victory through their adherence to natural law (dharma), they overcome all difficulties.
ये पापानि न कुर्वन्ति कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ।
निक्षिप्तदण्डा भूतेषु दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥९॥
9. ye pāpāni na kurvanti karmaṇā manasā girā ,
nikṣiptadaṇḍā bhūteṣu durgāṇyatitaranti te.
9. ye pāpāni na kurvanti karmaṇā manasā girā
nikṣiptadaṇḍāḥ bhūteṣu durgāṇi atitaranti te
9. ye karmaṇā manasā girā pāpāni na kurvanti

9. Those who commit no evil (karma) by action, thought, or speech, and who have renounced violence towards all beings, they overcome all difficulties.
ये वदन्तीह सत्यानि प्राणत्यागेऽप्युपस्थिते ।
प्रमाणभूता भूतानां दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१०॥
10. ye vadantīha satyāni prāṇatyāge'pyupasthite ,
pramāṇabhūtā bhūtānāṁ durgāṇyatitaranti te.
10. ye vadanti iha satyāni prāṇatyāge api upasthite
pramāṇabhūtāḥ bhūtānām durgāṇi atitaranti te
10. ye iha prāṇatyāge api upasthite satyāni vadanti
bhūtānām pramāṇabhūtāḥ te durgāṇi atitaranti
10. Those who speak the truth in this world, even when the giving up of life (prāṇa) is imminent, and thereby become authorities for all beings, they overcome all difficulties.
अनध्यायेषु ये विप्राः स्वाध्यायं नैव कुर्वते ।
तपोनित्याः सुतपसो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥११॥
11. anadhyāyeṣu ye viprāḥ svādhyāyaṁ naiva kurvate ,
taponityāḥ sutapaso durgāṇyatitaranti te.
11. anadhyāyeṣu ye viprāḥ svādhyāyam na eva kurvate
taponityāḥ sutapasaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
11. ye viprāḥ anadhyāyeṣu svādhyāyam na eva kurvate
taponityāḥ sutapasaḥ te durgāṇi atitaranti
11. Those learned ones (vipra) who, during non-study days, certainly do not engage in self-study (svādhyāya), and who are constantly devoted to austerity (tapas) and practice great austerities, they overcome all difficulties.
कर्माण्यकुहकार्थानि येषां वाचश्च सूनृताः ।
येषामर्थाश्च साध्वर्था दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२॥
12. karmāṇyakuhakārthāni yeṣāṁ vācaśca sūnṛtāḥ ,
yeṣāmarthāśca sādhvarthā durgāṇyatitaranti te.
12. karmāṇi akuhakārthāni yeṣām vācaḥ ca sūnṛtāḥ
yeṣām arthāḥ ca sādhvarthāḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
12. yeṣām karmāṇi akuhakārthāni,
yeṣām vācaḥ ca sūnṛtāḥ,
yeṣām arthāḥ ca sādhvarthāḥ,
te durgāṇi atitaranti.
12. Those whose actions are performed without deceitful intentions, whose words are truthful and pleasant, and whose purposes are righteous – they overcome all difficulties.
ये तपश्च तपस्यन्ति कौमारब्रह्मचारिणः ।
विद्यावेदव्रतस्नाता दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१३॥
13. ye tapaśca tapasyanti kaumārabrahmacāriṇaḥ ,
vidyāvedavratasnātā durgāṇyatitaranti te.
13. ye tapas ca tapasyanti kaumārabrahmacāriṇaḥ
vidyāvedavratasnātāḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
13. ye kaumārabrahmacāriṇaḥ tapas ca tapasyanti vidyāvedavratasnātāḥ,
te durgāṇi atitaranti.
13. Those who practice asceticism (tapas) and are lifelong celibates (brahmacāriṇaḥ) from boyhood, who have purified themselves by completing the study of knowledge and Vedic vows (vidyāvedavratasnātā) - they overcome all adversities.
ये च संशान्तरजसः संशान्ततमसश्च ये ।
सत्ये स्थिता महात्मानो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१४॥
14. ye ca saṁśāntarajasaḥ saṁśāntatamasaśca ye ,
satye sthitā mahātmāno durgāṇyatitaranti te.
14. ye ca saṃśāntarajasaḥ saṃśāntatamasaḥ ca ye
satye sthitāḥ mahātmānaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
14. ye mahātmānaḥ ca saṃśāntarajasaḥ ca saṃśāntatamasaḥ satye sthitāḥ,
te durgāṇi atitaranti.
14. And those great souls (mahātman) whose passion (rajas) and ignorance (tamas) are completely calmed, and who are established in truth - they overcome all adversities.
येषां न कश्चित्त्रसति त्रसन्ति न च कस्यचित् ।
येषामात्मसमो लोको दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१५॥
15. yeṣāṁ na kaścittrasati trasanti na ca kasyacit ,
yeṣāmātmasamo loko durgāṇyatitaranti te.
15. yeṣām na kaścit trasati trasanti na ca kasyacit
yeṣām ātmasamaḥ lokaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
15. yeṣām kaścit na trasati ca kasyacit na trasanti,
yeṣām lokaḥ ātmasamaḥ,
te durgāṇi atitaranti.
15. Those from whom no one fears, and who themselves fear no one; those for whom the entire world is like their own self (ātman) - they overcome all adversities.
परश्रिया न तप्यन्ते ये सन्तः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
ग्राम्यादन्नान्निवृत्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१६॥
16. paraśriyā na tapyante ye santaḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
grāmyādannānnivṛttāśca durgāṇyatitaranti te.
16. para-śriyā na tapyante ye santaḥ puruṣa-ṛṣabhāḥ
grāmyāt annāt nivṛttāḥ ca durgāṇi atitaranti te
16. ye puruṣa-ṛṣabhāḥ santaḥ para-śriyā na tapyante,
ca grāmyāt annāt nivṛttāḥ,
te durgāṇi atitaranti
16. Those virtuous, outstanding individuals who are not troubled by the prosperity of others, and who abstain from common, worldly food, overcome all difficulties.
सर्वान्देवान्नमस्यन्ति सर्वान्धर्मांश्च शृण्वते ।
ये श्रद्दधाना दान्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१७॥
17. sarvāndevānnamasyanti sarvāndharmāṁśca śṛṇvate ,
ye śraddadhānā dāntāśca durgāṇyatitaranti te.
17. sarvān devān namasyanti sarvān dharmān ca śṛṇvate
ye śraddadhānāḥ dāntāḥ ca durgāṇi atitaranti te
17. ye sarvān devān namasyanti,
ca sarvān dharmān śṛṇvate,
śraddadhānāḥ dāntāḥ ca,
te durgāṇi atitaranti
17. Those who worship all deities, listen to all (natural) laws (dharma), are endowed with faith (śraddhā) and self-control, they overcome all difficulties.
ये न मानितमिच्छन्ति मानयन्ति च ये परम् ।
मान्यमाना न मन्यन्ते दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१८॥
18. ye na mānitamicchanti mānayanti ca ye param ,
mānyamānā na manyante durgāṇyatitaranti te.
18. ye na mānitam icchanti mānayanti ca ye param
mānyamānāḥ na manyante durgāṇi atitaranti te
18. ye mānitam na icchanti,
ca ye param mānayanti,
mānyamānāḥ na manyante,
te durgāṇi atitaranti
18. Those who do not desire to be honored, and who instead honor others, and who, even when being honored, do not take it to heart, they overcome all difficulties.
ये श्राद्धानि च कुर्वन्ति तिथ्यां तिथ्यां प्रजार्थिनः ।
सुविशुद्धेन मनसा दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१९॥
19. ye śrāddhāni ca kurvanti tithyāṁ tithyāṁ prajārthinaḥ ,
suviśuddhena manasā durgāṇyatitaranti te.
19. ye śrāddhāni ca kurvanti tithyām tithyām prajā-arthinaḥ
suviśuddhena manasā durgāṇi atitaranti te
19. ye prajā-arthinaḥ tithyām tithyām ca śrāddhāni suviśuddhena manasā kurvanti,
te durgāṇi atitaranti
19. Those who, desiring progeny, perform ancestral rites (śrāddha) on every auspicious lunar day (tithi) with a very pure mind, they overcome all difficulties.
ये क्रोधं नैव कुर्वन्ति क्रुद्धान्संशमयन्ति च ।
न च कुप्यन्ति भृत्येभ्यो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥२०॥
20. ye krodhaṁ naiva kurvanti kruddhānsaṁśamayanti ca ,
na ca kupyanti bhṛtyebhyo durgāṇyatitaranti te.
20. ye krodham na eva kurvanti kruddhān saṃśamayanti ca
na ca kupyanti bhṛtyebhyaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
20. te ye krodham na eva kurvanti ca kruddhān saṃśamayanti
ca bhṛtyebhyaḥ na kupyanti durgāṇi atitaranti
20. Those who never become angry, who pacify those who are angry, and who do not get angry with their servants, such people overcome difficulties.
मधु मांसं च ये नित्यं वर्जयन्तीह मानवाः ।
जन्मप्रभृति मद्यं च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥२१॥
21. madhu māṁsaṁ ca ye nityaṁ varjayantīha mānavāḥ ,
janmaprabhṛti madyaṁ ca durgāṇyatitaranti te.
21. madhu māṃsam ca ye nityam varjayanti iha mānavāḥ
janmaprabhṛti madyam ca durgāṇi atitaranti te
21. te mānavāḥ ye nityam madhu ca māṃsam iha varjayanti
ca janmaprabhṛti madyam durgāṇi atitaranti
21. Those humans who constantly abstain from honey and meat, and also from intoxicating drinks (madya) from birth onwards, they overcome difficulties.
यात्रार्थं भोजनं येषां संतानार्थं च मैथुनम् ।
वाक्सत्यवचनार्थाय दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥२२॥
22. yātrārthaṁ bhojanaṁ yeṣāṁ saṁtānārthaṁ ca maithunam ,
vāksatyavacanārthāya durgāṇyatitaranti te.
22. yātrārtham bhojanam yeṣām saṃtānārtham ca maithunam
vāk satyavacanārthāya durgāṇi atitaranti te
22. te yeṣām bhojanam yātrārtham ca maithunam saṃtānārtham
ca vāk satyavacanārthāya durgāṇi atitaranti
22. Those for whom food is for the sake of the journey (sustenance), sexual union (maithunam) is for the sake of progeny, and speech is for the purpose of speaking the truth, they overcome difficulties.
ईश्वरं सर्वभूतानां जगतः प्रभवाप्ययम् ।
भक्ता नारायणं ये च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥२३॥
23. īśvaraṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ jagataḥ prabhavāpyayam ,
bhaktā nārāyaṇaṁ ye ca durgāṇyatitaranti te.
23. īśvaram sarvabhūtānām jagataḥ prabhavāpyayam
bhaktāḥ nārāyaṇam ye ca durgāṇi atitaranti te
23. te ye ca sarvabhūtānām jagataḥ prabhavāpyayam
īśvaram nārāyaṇam bhaktāḥ durgāṇi atitaranti
23. And those who are devoted (bhakta) to Nārāyaṇa (nārāyaṇa), who is the Lord (īśvara) of all beings and the origin and dissolution of the cosmos (jagat), they overcome difficulties.
य एष रक्तपद्माक्षः पीतवासा महाभुजः ।
सुहृद्भ्राता च मित्रं च संबन्धी च तवाच्युतः ॥२४॥
24. ya eṣa raktapadmākṣaḥ pītavāsā mahābhujaḥ ,
suhṛdbhrātā ca mitraṁ ca saṁbandhī ca tavācyutaḥ.
24. यः एषः रक्तपद्माक्षः पीतवासाः महाभुजः सुहृत्
भ्राता च मित्रम् च सम्बन्धी च तव अच्युतः
24. यः रक्तपद्माक्षः पीतवासाः महाभुजः एषः अच्युतः
तव सुहृत् भ्राता च मित्रम् च सम्बन्धी च
24. This Acyuta, who has eyes like red lotuses, wears yellow garments, and possesses mighty arms, is your well-wishing brother, friend, and relative.
य इमान्सकलाँल्लोकांश्चर्मवत्परिवेष्टयेत् ।
इच्छन्प्रभुरचिन्त्यात्मा गोविन्दः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥२५॥
25. ya imānsakalāँllokāṁścarmavatpariveṣṭayet ,
icchanprabhuracintyātmā govindaḥ puruṣottamaḥ.
25. यः इमान् सकलान् लोकान् चर्मवत् परिवेष्टयेत्
इच्छन् प्रभुः अचिन्त्यात्मा गोविन्दः पुरुषोत्तमः
25. यः प्रभुः अचिन्त्यात्मा गोविन्दः पुरुषोत्तमः
इच्छन् इमान् सकलान् लोकान् चर्मवत् परिवेष्टयेत्
25. This Lord (prabhu), Govinda (govinda), the Supreme Person (puruṣottama), whose nature (ātman) is inconceivable, could, if he wished, envelop all these worlds as easily as one wraps a piece of leather.
स्थितः प्रियहिते जिष्णोः स एष पुरुषर्षभ ।
राजंस्तव च दुर्धर्षो वैकुण्ठः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥२६॥
26. sthitaḥ priyahite jiṣṇoḥ sa eṣa puruṣarṣabha ,
rājaṁstava ca durdharṣo vaikuṇṭhaḥ puruṣottamaḥ.
26. स्थितः प्रियहिते जिष्णोः सः एषः पुरुषर्षभ
राजन् तव च दुर्धर्षः वैकुण्ठः पुरुषोत्तमः
26. राजन् सः एषः पुरुषर्षभ दुर्धर्षः वैकुण्ठः
पुरुषोत्तमः जिष्णोः तव च प्रियहिते स्थितः
26. O King (rājan), this Vaikuntha (vaikuṇṭha), the Supreme Person (puruṣottama), who is the best among men (puruṣarṣabha) and invincible, stands here for the welfare and benefit of Jishnu (Arjuna) and also for your unassailable position.
य एनं संश्रयन्तीह भक्त्या नारायणं हरिम् ।
ते तरन्तीह दुर्गाणि न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥२७॥
27. ya enaṁ saṁśrayantīha bhaktyā nārāyaṇaṁ harim ,
te tarantīha durgāṇi na me'trāsti vicāraṇā.
27. ये एनम् संश्रयन्ति इह भक्त्या नारायणम् हरिम्
ते तरन्ति इह दुर्गाणि न मे अत्र अस्ति विचारणा
27. ये इह भक्त्या एनम् नारायणम् हरिम् संश्रयन्ति
ते इह दुर्गाणि तरन्ति अत्र मे विचारणा न अस्ति
27. Those who, in this world, take refuge in Narayana (nārāyaṇa) Hari (hari) with devotion (bhakti), they indeed overcome all difficulties (durgāṇi). On this point, I have no doubt.
दुर्गातितरणं ये च पठन्ति श्रावयन्ति च ।
पाठयन्ति च विप्रेभ्यो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥२८॥
28. durgātitaraṇaṁ ye ca paṭhanti śrāvayanti ca ,
pāṭhayanti ca viprebhyo durgāṇyatitaranti te.
28. durgātitaraṇam ye ca paṭhanti śrāvayanti ca
pāṭhayanti ca viprebhyaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te
28. ye ca durgātitaraṇam paṭhanti ca śrāvayanti ca
viprebhyaḥ pāṭhayanti te durgāṇi atitaranti
28. And those who read this teaching for overcoming difficulties, and those who cause (others) to hear it, and those who teach it to Brahmins, they overcome obstacles.
इति कृत्यसमुद्देशः कीर्तितस्ते मयानघ ।
संतरेद्येन दुर्गाणि परत्रेह च मानवः ॥२९॥
29. iti kṛtyasamuddeśaḥ kīrtitaste mayānagha ,
saṁtaredyena durgāṇi paratreha ca mānavaḥ.
29. iti kṛtyasamuddeśaḥ kīrtitaḥ te mayā anagha
santaret yena durgāṇi paratra iha ca mānavaḥ
29. anagha mayā te iti kṛtyasamuddeśaḥ kīrtitaḥ
yena mānavaḥ iha ca paratra durgāṇi santaret
