मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
स हत्वा रावणं क्षुद्रं राक्षसेन्द्रं सुरद्विषम् ।
बभूव हृष्टः ससुहृद्रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
sa hatvā rāvaṇaṁ kṣudraṁ rākṣasendraṁ suradviṣam ,
babhūva hṛṣṭaḥ sasuhṛdrāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca saḥ hatvā rāvaṇam kṣudram rākṣasendram
suradviṣam babhūva hṛṣṭaḥ sasuhṛt rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having killed the despicable Rāvaṇa, who was the king of the Rākṣasas and an enemy of the gods, Rāma became delighted along with his friends and Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa).
ततो हते दशग्रीवे देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः ।
आशीर्भिर्जययुक्ताभिरानर्चुस्तं महाभुजम् ॥२॥
2. tato hate daśagrīve devāḥ sarṣipurogamāḥ ,
āśīrbhirjayayuktābhirānarcustaṁ mahābhujam.
2. tataḥ hate daśagrīve devāḥ saṛṣipurogamāḥ
āśīrbhiḥ jayayuktābhiḥ ānarcuḥ tam mahābhujam
2. Then, after Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) had been killed, the gods, led by the sages, worshipped the mighty-armed Rāma with blessings imbued with victory praises.
रामं कमलपत्राक्षं तुष्टुवुः सर्वदेवताः ।
गन्धर्वाः पुष्पवर्षैश्च वाग्भिश्च त्रिदशालयाः ॥३॥
3. rāmaṁ kamalapatrākṣaṁ tuṣṭuvuḥ sarvadevatāḥ ,
gandharvāḥ puṣpavarṣaiśca vāgbhiśca tridaśālayāḥ.
3. rāmam kamalapatrākṣam tuṣṭuvuḥ sarvadevatāḥ
gandharvāḥ puṣpavarṣaiḥ ca vāgbhiḥ ca tridaśālayāḥ
3. All the deities, the Gandharvas, and other celestial beings praised Rāma, whose eyes were like lotus petals, with showers of flowers and with eloquent words.
पूजयित्वा यथा रामं प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम् ।
तन्महोत्सवसंकाशमासीदाकाशमच्युत ॥४॥
4. pūjayitvā yathā rāmaṁ pratijagmuryathāgatam ,
tanmahotsavasaṁkāśamāsīdākāśamacyuta.
4. pūjayitvā yathā rāmam pratijagmuḥ yathāgatam
tat mahotsavasaṃkāśam āsīt ākāśam acyuta
4. Having thus worshipped Rāma, they returned the way they had come. O Acyuta, that sky then resembled a great festival.
ततो हत्वा दशग्रीवं लङ्कां रामो महायशाः ।
विभीषणाय प्रददौ प्रभुः परपुरंजयः ॥५॥
5. tato hatvā daśagrīvaṁ laṅkāṁ rāmo mahāyaśāḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇāya pradadau prabhuḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ.
5. tataḥ hatvā daśagrīvam laṅkām rāmaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
vibhīṣaṇāya pradadau prabhuḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ
5. Then, having killed the ten-necked Rāvaṇa (Daśagrīva), the highly renowned Rāma, the powerful conqueror of enemy cities, gave Laṅkā to Vibhīṣaṇa.
ततः सीतां पुरस्कृत्य विभीषणपुरस्कृताम् ।
अविन्ध्यो नाम सुप्रज्ञो वृद्धामात्यो विनिर्ययौ ॥६॥
6. tataḥ sītāṁ puraskṛtya vibhīṣaṇapuraskṛtām ,
avindhyo nāma suprajño vṛddhāmātyo viniryayau.
6. tataḥ sītām puraskṛtya vibhīṣaṇapuraskṛtām
avindhyaḥ nāma suprajñaḥ vṛddhāmātyaḥ viniryayau
6. Then, with Sītā brought forward, who was escorted by Vibhīṣaṇa, the very wise old minister named Avindhya came forth.
उवाच च महात्मानं काकुत्स्थं दैन्यमास्थितम् ।
प्रतीच्छ देवीं सद्वृत्तां महात्मञ्जानकीमिति ॥७॥
7. uvāca ca mahātmānaṁ kākutsthaṁ dainyamāsthitam ,
pratīccha devīṁ sadvṛttāṁ mahātmañjānakīmiti.
7. uvāca ca mahātmānam kākutstham dainyam āsthitam
pratīccha devīm sadvṛttām mahātman jānakīm iti
7. And he said to the great-souled Rāma (Kakutstha), who was overcome with sorrow: 'O great-souled one, please accept the virtuous goddess Jānakī (Sītā).'
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्मादवतीर्य रथोत्तमात् ।
बाष्पेणापिहितां सीतां ददर्शेक्ष्वाकुनन्दनः ॥८॥
8. etacchrutvā vacastasmādavatīrya rathottamāt ,
bāṣpeṇāpihitāṁ sītāṁ dadarśekṣvākunandanaḥ.
8. etat śrutvā vacas tasmāt avatīrya rathottamāt
bāṣpeṇa apihitām sītām dadarśa ikṣvākunandanaḥ
8. Having heard these words from him, Rāma (Ikṣvākunandana), the delight of the Ikṣvākus, descended from the excellent chariot and saw Sītā, who was overcome with tears.
तां दृष्ट्वा चारुसर्वाङ्गीं यानस्थां शोककर्शिताम् ।
मलोपचितसर्वाङ्गीं जटिलां कृष्णवाससम् ॥९॥
9. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā cārusarvāṅgīṁ yānasthāṁ śokakarśitām ,
malopacitasarvāṅgīṁ jaṭilāṁ kṛṣṇavāsasam.
9. tām dṛṣṭvā cārusarvāṅgīm yānasthām śokakarśitām
malopacitasarvāṅgīm jaṭilām kṛṣṇavāsasam
9. Having seen her, whose every limb was beautiful, yet seated in a vehicle, emaciated by grief, her entire body covered with dirt, with matted hair, and dressed in black garments.
उवाच रामो वैदेहीं परामर्शविशङ्कितः ।
गच्छ वैदेहि मुक्ता त्वं यत्कार्यं तन्मया कृतम् ॥१०॥
10. uvāca rāmo vaidehīṁ parāmarśaviśaṅkitaḥ ,
gaccha vaidehi muktā tvaṁ yatkāryaṁ tanmayā kṛtam.
10. uvāca rāmaḥ vaidehīm parāmarśaviśaṅkitaḥ gaccha
vaidehi muktā tvam yat kāryam tat mayā kṛtam
10. Rama, apprehensive of criticism, said to Vaidehī: "Go, Vaidehī, you are now free. The task that needed to be done has been accomplished by me."
मामासाद्य पतिं भद्रे न त्वं राक्षसवेश्मनि ।
जरां व्रजेथा इति मे निहतोऽसौ निशाचरः ॥११॥
11. māmāsādya patiṁ bhadre na tvaṁ rākṣasaveśmani ,
jarāṁ vrajethā iti me nihato'sau niśācaraḥ.
11. mām āsādya patim bhadre na tvam rākṣasaveśmani
jarām vrajethāḥ iti me nihataḥ asau niśācaraḥ
11. O gentle one, it is not fitting that you, having me as your husband, should grow old in a demon's abode. Therefore, that night-prowler has been slain by me.
कथं ह्यस्मद्विधो जातु जानन्धर्मविनिश्चयम् ।
परहस्तगतां नारीं मुहूर्तमपि धारयेत् ॥१२॥
12. kathaṁ hyasmadvidho jātu jānandharmaviniścayam ,
parahastagatāṁ nārīṁ muhūrtamapi dhārayet.
12. katham hi asmatvidhaḥ jātu jānan dharmaviniścayam
parahastagatām nārīm muhūrtam api dhārayet
12. How indeed could one like me, who knows the certainty of natural law (dharma), ever keep a woman who has fallen into another's hands, even for a moment?
सुवृत्तामसुवृत्तां वाप्यहं त्वामद्य मैथिलि ।
नोत्सहे परिभोगाय श्वावलीढं हविर्यथा ॥१३॥
13. suvṛttāmasuvṛttāṁ vāpyahaṁ tvāmadya maithili ,
notsahe paribhogāya śvāvalīḍhaṁ haviryathā.
13. suvṛttām asuvṛttām vā api aham tvām adya maithili
na utsahe paribhogāya śvāvalīḍham haviḥ yathā
13. O Maithili, whether you are of good conduct or of bad conduct, I cannot accept you today for enjoyment (paribhoga), just as one cannot accept an oblation licked by a dog.
ततः सा सहसा बाला तच्छ्रुत्वा दारुणं वचः ।
पपात देवी व्यथिता निकृत्ता कदली यथा ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ sā sahasā bālā tacchrutvā dāruṇaṁ vacaḥ ,
papāta devī vyathitā nikṛttā kadalī yathā.
14. tataḥ sā sahasā bālā tat śrutvā dāruṇam vacaḥ
papāta devī vyathitā nikṛttā kadalī yathā
14. Then, having heard those harsh words, that young lady, the distressed queen (devī), suddenly fell down just like a banana plant that has been cut down.
यो ह्यस्या हर्षसंभूतो मुखरागस्तदाभवत् ।
क्षणेन स पुनर्भ्रष्टो निःश्वासादिव दर्पणे ॥१५॥
15. yo hyasyā harṣasaṁbhūto mukharāgastadābhavat ,
kṣaṇena sa punarbhraṣṭo niḥśvāsādiva darpaṇe.
15. yaḥ hi asyāḥ harṣasaṃbhūtaḥ mukharāgaḥ tadā abhavat
kṣaṇena saḥ punaḥ bhraṣṭaḥ niḥśvāsāt iva darpaṇe
15. Indeed, the redness of her face (mukharāga) that had appeared due to joy then, in an instant, vanished again, just like a breath (niḥśvāsa) disappears from a mirror.
ततस्ते हरयः सर्वे तच्छ्रुत्वा रामभाषितम् ।
गतासुकल्पा निश्चेष्टा बभूवुः सहलक्ष्मणाः ॥१६॥
16. tataste harayaḥ sarve tacchrutvā rāmabhāṣitam ,
gatāsukalpā niśceṣṭā babhūvuḥ sahalakṣmaṇāḥ.
16. tataḥ te harayaḥ sarve tat śrutvā rāmabhāṣitam
gatāsukalpāḥ niśceṣṭāḥ babhūvuḥ sahalakṣmaṇāḥ
16. Then, having heard Rama's words, all those monkeys (harayaḥ), along with Lakṣmaṇa, became as if their life (asu) had departed, and they were motionless.
ततो देवो विशुद्धात्मा विमानेन चतुर्मुखः ।
पितामहो जगत्स्रष्टा दर्शयामास राघवम् ॥१७॥
17. tato devo viśuddhātmā vimānena caturmukhaḥ ,
pitāmaho jagatsraṣṭā darśayāmāsa rāghavam.
17. tatas devaḥ viśuddhātmā vimānena caturmukhaḥ
pitāmahaḥ jagatsraṣṭā darśayāmāsa rāghavam
17. Then, the pure-souled (ātman) god, the four-faced great-grandfather and creator of the world, Brahmā, revealed himself to Rāghava (Rama) by means of a celestial chariot.
शक्रश्चाग्निश्च वायुश्च यमो वरुण एव च ।
यक्षाधिपश्च भगवांस्तथा सप्तर्षयोऽमलाः ॥१८॥
18. śakraścāgniśca vāyuśca yamo varuṇa eva ca ,
yakṣādhipaśca bhagavāṁstathā saptarṣayo'malāḥ.
18. śakraḥ ca agniḥ ca vāyuḥ ca yamaḥ varuṇaḥ eva ca
yakṣādhipaḥ ca bhagavān tathā saptarṣayaḥ amalāḥ
18. Indra, Agni, Vayu, Yama, Varuna, and also the illustrious lord of Yakshas, along with the pure seven sages.
राजा दशरथश्चैव दिव्यभास्वरमूर्तिमान् ।
विमानेन महार्हेण हंसयुक्तेन भास्वता ॥१९॥
19. rājā daśarathaścaiva divyabhāsvaramūrtimān ,
vimānena mahārheṇa haṁsayuktena bhāsvatā.
19. rājā daśarathaḥ ca eva divyabhāsvaramūrtimān
vimānena mahārheṇa haṃsayuktena bhāsvatā
19. And King Dasharatha, possessing a divine and shining form, appeared by means of a magnificent, radiant celestial chariot, yoked with swans.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षं तत्सर्वं देवगन्धर्वसंकुलम् ।
शुशुभे तारकाचित्रं शरदीव नभस्तलम् ॥२०॥
20. tato'ntarikṣaṁ tatsarvaṁ devagandharvasaṁkulam ,
śuśubhe tārakācitraṁ śaradīva nabhastalam.
20. tatas antarikṣam tat sarvam devagandharvasaṅkulam
śuśubhe tārakācitram śaradi iva nabhastalam
20. Then that entire sky, crowded with gods and Gandharvas, shone brightly, adorned with stars, like the autumnal sky.
तत उत्थाय वैदेहि तेषां मध्ये यशस्विनी ।
उवाच वाक्यं कल्याणी रामं पृथुलवक्षसम् ॥२१॥
21. tata utthāya vaidehi teṣāṁ madhye yaśasvinī ,
uvāca vākyaṁ kalyāṇī rāmaṁ pṛthulavakṣasam.
21. tata utthāya vaidehi teṣām madhye yaśasvinī
uvāca vākyaṃ kalyāṇī rāmam pṛthulavakṣasam
21. Then, the glorious and beautiful Vaidehi rose among them and spoke these words to the broad-chested Rama.
राजपुत्र न ते कोपं करोमि विदिता हि मे ।
गतिः स्त्रीणां नराणां च शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥२२॥
22. rājaputra na te kopaṁ karomi viditā hi me ,
gatiḥ strīṇāṁ narāṇāṁ ca śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
22. rājaputra na te kopam karomi viditā hi me gatiḥ
strīṇām narāṇām ca śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
22. O prince, I do not feel anger towards you, for indeed, the intrinsic nature (gati) of both women and men is known to me. Now, listen to these words of mine.
अन्तश्चरति भूतानां मातरिश्वा सदागतिः ।
स मे विमुञ्चतु प्राणान्यदि पापं चराम्यहम् ॥२३॥
23. antaścarati bhūtānāṁ mātariśvā sadāgatiḥ ,
sa me vimuñcatu prāṇānyadi pāpaṁ carāmyaham.
23. antas carati bhūtānām mātariśvā sadāgatiḥ saḥ
me vimuñcatu prāṇān yadi pāpam carāmi aham
23. The wind (mātariśvan), which is ever-moving (sadāgati), moves within all beings. May it release my life-breaths (prāṇa) if I commit any wrongdoing.
अग्निरापस्तथाकाशं पृथिवी वायुरेव च ।
विमुञ्चन्तु मम प्राणान्यदि पापं चराम्यहम् ॥२४॥
24. agnirāpastathākāśaṁ pṛthivī vāyureva ca ,
vimuñcantu mama prāṇānyadi pāpaṁ carāmyaham.
24. agniḥ āpas tathā ākāśam pṛthivī vāyuḥ eva ca
vimuñcantu mama prāṇān yadi pāpam carāmi aham
24. May fire, the waters, and similarly the space (ākāśa), earth, and wind themselves release my life-breaths (prāṇa) if I commit any wrongdoing.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे वागासीत्सर्वा विश्रावयन्दिशः ।
पुण्या संहर्षणी तेषां वानराणां महात्मनाम् ॥२५॥
25. tato'ntarikṣe vāgāsītsarvā viśrāvayandiśaḥ ,
puṇyā saṁharṣaṇī teṣāṁ vānarāṇāṁ mahātmanām.
25. tataḥ antarikṣe vāk āsīt sarvāḥ viśrāvayan diśaḥ
puṇyā saṃharṣaṇī teṣām vānarāṇām mahātmanām
25. Then a sacred and exhilarating voice came from the sky, resounding throughout all directions for those monkeys with great spirits (ātman).
वायुरुवाच ।
भो भो राघव सत्यं वै वायुरस्मि सदागतिः ।
अपापा मैथिली राजन्संगच्छ सह भार्यया ॥२६॥
26. vāyuruvāca ,
bho bho rāghava satyaṁ vai vāyurasmi sadāgatiḥ ,
apāpā maithilī rājansaṁgaccha saha bhāryayā.
26. vāyuḥ uvāca bho bho rāghava satyam vai vāyuḥ asmi
sadāgatiḥ apāpā maithilī rājan saṃgaccha saha bhāryayā
26. Vayu spoke: "O Raghava, truly, I am Vayu, the ever-moving (sadāgatiḥ) god of wind. O King, Maithili (Sita) is sinless. Accept your wife."
अग्निरुवाच ।
अहमन्तःशरीरस्थो भूतानां रघुनन्दन ।
सुसूक्ष्ममपि काकुत्स्थ मैथिली नापराध्यति ॥२७॥
27. agniruvāca ,
ahamantaḥśarīrastho bhūtānāṁ raghunandana ,
susūkṣmamapi kākutstha maithilī nāparādhyati.
27. aham antaḥśarīrasthaḥ bhūtānām raghunandana
susūkṣmam api kākutstha maithilī na aparādhyati
27. Agni spoke: "O Raghunandana (Rama), I (Agni) reside within the bodies of all beings. O Kakutstha (Rama), Maithili (Sita) has not committed even the slightest fault."
वरुण उवाच ।
रसा वै मत्प्रसूता हि भूतदेहेषु राघव ।
अहं वै त्वां प्रब्रवीमि मैथिली प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥२८॥
28. varuṇa uvāca ,
rasā vai matprasūtā hi bhūtadeheṣu rāghava ,
ahaṁ vai tvāṁ prabravīmi maithilī pratigṛhyatām.
28. varuṇaḥ uvāca rasāḥ vai matprasūtāḥ hi bhūtadeheṣu
rāghava aham vai tvām prabravīmi maithilī pratigṛhyatām
28. Varuna spoke: "O Raghava, indeed, the vital fluids (rasa) within the bodies of all beings surely originate from me. I truly tell you, Maithili (Sita) should be accepted."
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
पुत्र नैतदिहाश्चर्यं त्वयि राजर्षिधर्मिणि ।
साधो सद्वृत्तमार्गस्थे शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥२९॥
29. brahmovāca ,
putra naitadihāścaryaṁ tvayi rājarṣidharmiṇi ,
sādho sadvṛttamārgasthe śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
29. brahmā uvāca putra na etat iha āścaryam tvayi rājarṣidharmiṇi
sādho sadvṛttamārgesthe śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
29. Brahmā said: "Son, this is not at all surprising in you, who embody the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a royal sage. O virtuous one, who always follows the path of righteous conduct, listen to these words of mine."
शत्रुरेष त्वया वीर देवगन्धर्वभोगिनाम् ।
यक्षाणां दानवानां च महर्षीणां च पातितः ॥३०॥
30. śatrureṣa tvayā vīra devagandharvabhoginām ,
yakṣāṇāṁ dānavānāṁ ca maharṣīṇāṁ ca pātitaḥ.
30. śatruḥ eṣaḥ tvayā vīra devagandharvabhoginām
yakṣāṇām dānavānām ca maharṣīṇām ca pātitaḥ
30. O hero, you have struck down this enemy of the gods (devas), Gandharvas, Bhogins, Yakṣas, Dānavas, and great sages (maharṣis).
अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां मत्प्रसादात्पुराभवत् ।
कस्माच्चित्कारणात्पापः कंचित्कालमुपेक्षितः ॥३१॥
31. avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ matprasādātpurābhavat ,
kasmāccitkāraṇātpāpaḥ kaṁcitkālamupekṣitaḥ.
31. avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānām matprasādāt purā abhavat
kasmāt cit kāraṇāt pāpaḥ kañcit kālam upekṣitaḥ
31. By my grace, he was formerly invincible to all beings. For a certain period, that wicked one was tolerated for some particular reason.
वधार्थमात्मनस्तेन हृता सीता दुरात्मना ।
नलकूबरशापेन रक्षा चास्याः कृता मया ॥३२॥
32. vadhārthamātmanastena hṛtā sītā durātmanā ,
nalakūbaraśāpena rakṣā cāsyāḥ kṛtā mayā.
32. vadhārtham ātmanaḥ tena hṛtā sītā durātmanā
nalakūbaraśāpena rakṣā ca asyāḥ kṛtā mayā
32. Sītā was abducted by that wicked one (durātman) for his own destruction. And by Nalakūbara's curse, her protection was arranged by me.
यदि ह्यकामामासेवेत्स्त्रियमन्यामपि ध्रुवम् ।
शतधास्य फलेद्देह इत्युक्तः सोऽभवत्पुरा ॥३३॥
33. yadi hyakāmāmāsevetstriyamanyāmapi dhruvam ,
śatadhāsya phaleddeha ityuktaḥ so'bhavatpurā.
33. yadi hi akāmām āsevet striyam anyām api dhruvam
śatadhā asya phalet dehaḥ iti uktaḥ saḥ abhavat purā
33. If one were to certainly approach an unwilling woman, even another's wife, his body would surely split into a hundred pieces. This is what was said to him in ancient times.
नात्र शङ्का त्वया कार्या प्रतीच्छेमां महाद्युते ।
कृतं त्वया महत्कार्यं देवानाममरप्रभ ॥३४॥
34. nātra śaṅkā tvayā kāryā pratīcchemāṁ mahādyute ,
kṛtaṁ tvayā mahatkāryaṁ devānāmamaraprabha.
34. na atra śaṅkā tvayā kāryā pratīccha imām mahādyute
kṛtam tvayā mahat kāryam devānām amaraprabha
34. You should not entertain any doubt in this matter. Accept this, O greatly effulgent one! You have accomplished a great deed for the gods, O splendor of the immortals.
दशरथ उवाच ।
प्रीतोऽस्मि वत्स भद्रं ते पिता दशरथोऽस्मि ते ।
अनुजानामि राज्यं च प्रशाधि पुरुषोत्तम ॥३५॥
35. daśaratha uvāca ,
prīto'smi vatsa bhadraṁ te pitā daśaratho'smi te ,
anujānāmi rājyaṁ ca praśādhi puruṣottama.
35. daśaratha uvāca prītaḥ asmi vatsa bhadram te pitā
daśarathaḥ asmi te anujānāmi rājyam ca praśādhi puruṣottama
35. Dasharatha said: 'I am pleased, my son. May good fortune be upon you. I am Dasharatha, your father. I grant you permission for the kingdom, so rule it, O best among men (puruṣottama)!'
राम उवाच ।
अभिवादये त्वां राजेन्द्र यदि त्वं जनको मम ।
गमिष्यामि पुरीं रम्यामयोध्यां शासनात्तव ॥३६॥
36. rāma uvāca ,
abhivādaye tvāṁ rājendra yadi tvaṁ janako mama ,
gamiṣyāmi purīṁ ramyāmayodhyāṁ śāsanāttava.
36. rāma uvāca abhivādaye tvām rājendra yadi tvam janakaḥ
mama gamiṣyāmi purīm ramyām ayodhyām śāsanāt tava
36. Rama said: 'I salute you, O chief of kings. If you are truly my father, then I will go to the beautiful city of Ayodhya by your command.'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तमुवाच पिता भूयः प्रहृष्टो मनुजाधिप ।
गच्छायोध्यां प्रशाधि त्वं राम रक्तान्तलोचन ॥३७॥
37. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tamuvāca pitā bhūyaḥ prahṛṣṭo manujādhipa ,
gacchāyodhyāṁ praśādhi tvaṁ rāma raktāntalocana.

37. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "O king of men, his father, greatly pleased, again said to him, 'O Rāma, whose eyes have red corners, go to Ayodhyā and rule there.'"
ततो देवान्नमस्कृत्य सुहृद्भिरभिनन्दितः ।
महेन्द्र इव पौलोम्या भार्यया स समेयिवान् ॥३८॥
38. tato devānnamaskṛtya suhṛdbhirabhinanditaḥ ,
mahendra iva paulomyā bhāryayā sa sameyivān.
38. tataḥ devān namaskṛtya suhṛdbhiḥ abhinanditaḥ
mahendraḥ iva paulomyā bhāryayā saḥ sameyivān
38. Then, having saluted the gods and being congratulated by his friends, he met his wife, just as Mahendra (Indra) meets Paulomī.
ततो वरं ददौ तस्मै अविन्ध्याय परंतपः ।
त्रिजटां चार्थमानाभ्यां योजयामास राक्षसीम् ॥३९॥
39. tato varaṁ dadau tasmai avindhyāya paraṁtapaḥ ,
trijaṭāṁ cārthamānābhyāṁ yojayāmāsa rākṣasīm.
39. tataḥ varam dadau tasmai avindhyāya parantapaḥ
trijaṭām ca arthamānābhyām yojayāmāsa rākṣasīm
39. Then, the scorcher of foes bestowed a boon upon Avindhya. He also arranged for the Rākṣasī Trijaṭā to receive wealth and honor.
तमुवाच ततो ब्रह्मा देवैः शक्रमुखैर्वृतः ।
कौसल्यामातरिष्टांस्ते वरानद्य ददानि कान् ॥४०॥
40. tamuvāca tato brahmā devaiḥ śakramukhairvṛtaḥ ,
kausalyāmātariṣṭāṁste varānadya dadāni kān.
40. tam uvāca tataḥ brahmā devaiḥ śakramukhaiḥ vṛtaḥ
kausalyā mātar iṣṭān te varān adya dadāni kān
40. Then Brahmā, surrounded by gods led by Indra, said to him (Rāma): "O Kauśalyā, O Mother, what desired boons shall I grant you today?"
वव्रे रामः स्थितिं धर्मे शत्रुभिश्चापराजयम् ।
राक्षसैर्निहतानां च वानराणां समुद्भवम् ॥४१॥
41. vavre rāmaḥ sthitiṁ dharme śatrubhiścāparājayam ,
rākṣasairnihatānāṁ ca vānarāṇāṁ samudbhavam.

rākṣasaiḥ nihatānām ca vānarāṇām samudbhavam
41. Rama requested steadfastness in (his) natural law (dharma), invincibility against enemies, and the resurrection of the monkeys who had been killed by the Rākṣasas.
ततस्ते ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्ते तथेति वचने तदा ।
समुत्तस्थुर्महाराज वानरा लब्धचेतसः ॥४२॥
42. tataste brahmaṇā prokte tatheti vacane tadā ,
samuttasthurmahārāja vānarā labdhacetasaḥ.
42. tataḥ te brahmaṇā prokte tathā iti vacane tadā
samuttasthuḥ mahārāja vānarā labdhacetasaḥ
42. Then, at that time, when Brahmā spoke the words, 'So be it!', O great king, the monkeys, having regained their consciousness, rose up.
सीता चापि महाभागा वरं हनुमते ददौ ।
रामकीर्त्या समं पुत्र जीवितं ते भविष्यति ॥४३॥
43. sītā cāpi mahābhāgā varaṁ hanumate dadau ,
rāmakīrtyā samaṁ putra jīvitaṁ te bhaviṣyati.
43. sītā ca api mahābhāgā varam hanumate dadau
rāmakīrtyā samam putra jīvitam te bhaviṣyati
43. And Sita, the greatly blessed one, also granted a boon to Hanumān: 'O son, your life will endure as long as the fame (kīrti) of Rama exists.'
दिव्यास्त्वामुपभोगाश्च मत्प्रसादकृताः सदा ।
उपस्थास्यन्ति हनुमन्निति स्म हरिलोचन ॥४४॥
44. divyāstvāmupabhogāśca matprasādakṛtāḥ sadā ,
upasthāsyanti hanumanniti sma harilocana.
44. divyāḥ tvām upabhogāḥ ca matprasādakṛtāḥ sadā
upasthāsyanti hanuman iti sma harilocana
44. And divine enjoyments, produced by my grace, will always be available to you, O Hanumān. Thus spoke Sita, the beautiful-eyed one.
ततस्ते प्रेक्षमाणानां तेषामक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् ।
अन्तर्धानं ययुर्देवाः सर्वे शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥४५॥
45. tataste prekṣamāṇānāṁ teṣāmakliṣṭakarmaṇām ,
antardhānaṁ yayurdevāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ.
45. tataḥ te prekṣamāṇānām teṣām akliṣṭakarmaṇām
antardhānam yayuḥ devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ
45. Then, all the gods, led by Indra, whose actions were unblemished, vanished from the sight of those who were watching.
दृष्ट्वा तु रामं जानक्या समेतं शक्रसारथिः ।
उवाच परमप्रीतः सुहृन्मध्य इदं वचः ॥४६॥
46. dṛṣṭvā tu rāmaṁ jānakyā sametaṁ śakrasārathiḥ ,
uvāca paramaprītaḥ suhṛnmadhya idaṁ vacaḥ.
46. dṛṣṭvā tu rāmam jānakyā sametam śakrasārathiḥ
uvāca paramaprītaḥ suhṛt madhye idam vacaḥ
46. Having seen Rāma accompanied by Jānakī, Indra's charioteer (Mātali), greatly pleased, spoke these words in the midst of his friends.
देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां मानुषासुरभोगिनाम् ।
अपनीतं त्वया दुःखमिदं सत्यपराक्रम ॥४७॥
47. devagandharvayakṣāṇāṁ mānuṣāsurabhoginām ,
apanītaṁ tvayā duḥkhamidaṁ satyaparākrama.
47. devagandharvayakṣāṇām mānuṣāsurabhoginām
apanītam tvayā duḥkham idam satyaparākrama
47. O truly valorous one, you have removed this suffering of the gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, humans, asuras, and nāgas.
सदेवासुरगन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः ।
कथयिष्यन्ति लोकास्त्वां यावद्भूमिर्धरिष्यति ॥४८॥
48. sadevāsuragandharvā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ ,
kathayiṣyanti lokāstvāṁ yāvadbhūmirdhariṣyati.
48. sadevāsuragandharvāḥ yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ
kathayiṣyanti lokāḥ tvām yāvat bhūmiḥ dhariṣyati
48. The worlds, including gods, asuras, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and nāgas, will speak of you as long as the earth endures.
इत्येवमुक्त्वानुज्ञाप्य रामं शस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
संपूज्यापाक्रमत्तेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ॥४९॥
49. ityevamuktvānujñāpya rāmaṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
saṁpūjyāpākramattena rathenādityavarcasā.
49. iti evam uktvā anujñāpya rāmam śastrabṛtām varam
sampūjya apākramat tena rathena ādityavarcasā
49. Having thus spoken, having taken leave of Rama, the foremost among weapon-bearers, and having honored him, he departed with that chariot which shone like the sun.
ततः सीतां पुरस्कृत्य रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ।
सुग्रीवप्रमुखैश्चैव सहितः सर्ववानरैः ॥५०॥
50. tataḥ sītāṁ puraskṛtya rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha ,
sugrīvapramukhaiścaiva sahitaḥ sarvavānaraiḥ.

50. Then, placing Sita at the forefront, Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana (son of Sumitra) and also by all the monkeys led by Sugriva...
विधाय रक्षां लङ्कायां विभीषणपुरस्कृतः ।
संततार पुनस्तेन सेतुना मकरालयम् ॥५१॥
51. vidhāya rakṣāṁ laṅkāyāṁ vibhīṣaṇapuraskṛtaḥ ,
saṁtatāra punastena setunā makarālayam.

santatāra punaḥ tena setunā makarālayam
51. Having established protection in Lanka, with Vibhishana in charge, he again crossed the ocean (makarālaya) by that bridge.
पुष्पकेण विमानेन खेचरेण विराजता ।
कामगेन यथा मुख्यैरमात्यैः संवृतो वशी ॥५२॥
52. puṣpakeṇa vimānena khecareṇa virājatā ,
kāmagena yathā mukhyairamātyaiḥ saṁvṛto vaśī.

yathā mukhyaiḥ amātyaiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ vaśī
52. The self-controlled one (vaśī) [Rama] was surrounded by the splendid, sky-traversing, wish-fulfilling Pushpaka aerial chariot (vimāna), just as a king might be surrounded by his chief ministers.
ततस्तीरे समुद्रस्य यत्र शिश्ये स पार्थिवः ।
तत्रैवोवास धर्मात्मा सहितः सर्ववानरैः ॥५३॥
53. tatastīre samudrasya yatra śiśye sa pārthivaḥ ,
tatraivovāsa dharmātmā sahitaḥ sarvavānaraiḥ.
53. tataḥ tīre samudrasya yatra śiśye saḥ pārthivaḥ
tatra eva uvāsa dharmātmā sahitaḥ sarvavānaraiḥ
53. Thereafter, on the shore of the ocean where that king had rested, the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) Rama stayed, accompanied by all the monkeys.
अथैनान्राघवः काले समानीयाभिपूज्य च ।
विसर्जयामास तदा रत्नैः संतोष्य सर्वशः ॥५४॥
54. athainānrāghavaḥ kāle samānīyābhipūjya ca ,
visarjayāmāsa tadā ratnaiḥ saṁtoṣya sarvaśaḥ.
54. atha enān rāghavaḥ kāle samānīya abhipūjya ca
visarjayāmāsa tadā ratnaiḥ saṃtoṣya sarvaśaḥ
54. Then, Rama, in due time, gathered them, honored them, and dismissed them, fully satisfying them with jewels.
गतेषु वानरेन्द्रेषु गोपुच्छर्क्षेषु तेषु च ।
सुग्रीवसहितो रामः किष्किन्धां पुनरागमत् ॥५५॥
55. gateṣu vānarendreṣu gopuccharkṣeṣu teṣu ca ,
sugrīvasahito rāmaḥ kiṣkindhāṁ punarāgamat.
55. gateṣu vānarendreṣu gopuccharṣeṣu teṣu ca
sugrīva sahitaḥ rāmaḥ kiṣkindhāṃ punaḥ āgamat
55. After the monkey chiefs and the cow-tailed bears had departed, Rama, accompanied by Sugriva, returned to Kishkindha.
विभीषणेनानुगतः सुग्रीवसहितस्तदा ।
पुष्पकेण विमानेन वैदेह्या दर्शयन्वनम् ॥५६॥
56. vibhīṣaṇenānugataḥ sugrīvasahitastadā ,
puṣpakeṇa vimānena vaidehyā darśayanvanam.

puṣpakena vimānena vaidehyā darśayan vanam
56. Then, followed by Vibhishana and accompanied by Sugriva, he was showing the forest to Sita (Vaidehī) from the aerial chariot named Pushpaka.
किष्किन्धां तु समासाद्य रामः प्रहरतां वरः ।
अङ्गदं कृतकर्माणं यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् ॥५७॥
57. kiṣkindhāṁ tu samāsādya rāmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ ,
aṅgadaṁ kṛtakarmāṇaṁ yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayat.
57. kiṣkindhām tu samāsādya rāmaḥ praharatām varaḥ
aṅgadam kṛtakarmāṇam yauvarājye abhyaṣecayat
57. Rāma, the foremost of warriors, upon reaching Kiṣkindhā, consecrated Aṅgada, who had accomplished great deeds, as the crown prince.
ततस्तैरेव सहितो रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ।
यथागतेन मार्गेण प्रययौ स्वपुरं प्रति ॥५८॥
58. tatastaireva sahito rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha ,
yathāgatena mārgeṇa prayayau svapuraṁ prati.
58. tataḥ taiḥ eva sahitaḥ rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha
yathāgatena mārgeṇa prayayau svapuram prati
58. Thereafter, Rāma, accompanied by those very (Vānaras) and with Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri), departed towards his own city by the same path they had come.
अयोध्यां स समासाद्य पुरीं राष्ट्रपतिस्ततः ।
भरताय हनूमन्तं दूतं प्रस्थापयत्तदा ॥५९॥
59. ayodhyāṁ sa samāsādya purīṁ rāṣṭrapatistataḥ ,
bharatāya hanūmantaṁ dūtaṁ prasthāpayattadā.
59. ayodhyām sa samāsādya purīm rāṣṭrapatiḥ tataḥ
bharatāya hanūmantam dūtam prasthāpayat tadā
59. Upon reaching the city of Ayodhyā, he, the protector of the kingdom, then dispatched Hanumān as a messenger to Bharata.
लक्षयित्वेङ्गितं सर्वं प्रियं तस्मै निवेद्य च ।
वायुपुत्रे पुनः प्राप्ते नन्दिग्राममुपागमत् ॥६०॥
60. lakṣayitveṅgitaṁ sarvaṁ priyaṁ tasmai nivedya ca ,
vāyuputre punaḥ prāpte nandigrāmamupāgamat.
60. lakṣayitvā iṅgitam sarvam priyam tasmai nivedya
ca vāyuputre punaḥ prāpte nandigrāmam upāgamat
60. After (Hanumān) had observed all the subtle indications and conveyed the pleasing news to Bharata, once the son of Vāyu (Hanumān) had returned, (Rāma) then proceeded to Nandigrāma.
स तत्र मलदिग्धाङ्गं भरतं चीरवाससम् ।
अग्रतः पादुके कृत्वा ददर्शासीनमासने ॥६१॥
61. sa tatra maladigdhāṅgaṁ bharataṁ cīravāsasam ,
agrataḥ pāduke kṛtvā dadarśāsīnamāsane.

agrataḥ pāduke kṛtvā dadarśa āsīnam āsane
61. There he saw Bharata, whose limbs were smeared with dirt and who was clad in bark garments, seated on a seat, having placed the two (wooden) sandals in front of him.
समेत्य भरतेनाथ शत्रुघ्नेन च वीर्यवान् ।
राघवः सहसौमित्रिर्मुमुदे भरतर्षभ ॥६२॥
62. sametya bharatenātha śatrughnena ca vīryavān ,
rāghavaḥ sahasaumitrirmumude bharatarṣabha.

rāghavaḥ saha saumitriḥ mumude bharatarṣabha
62. The mighty Rāma (rāghavaḥ), along with Lakṣmaṇa (saumitriḥ), rejoiced after meeting with Bharata and Śatrughna, O best of Bharatas.
तथा भरतशत्रुघ्नौ समेतौ गुरुणा तदा ।
वैदेह्या दर्शनेनोभौ प्रहर्षं समवापतुः ॥६३॥
63. tathā bharataśatrughnau sametau guruṇā tadā ,
vaidehyā darśanenobhau praharṣaṁ samavāpatuḥ.

vaidehyāḥ darśanena ubhau praharṣam samavāpatuḥ
63. Similarly, when Bharata and Śatrughna met their elder (guru) then both attained great joy upon seeing Vaidehī.
तस्मै तद्भरतो राज्यमागतायाभिसत्कृतम् ।
न्यासं निर्यातयामास युक्तः परमया मुदा ॥६४॥
64. tasmai tadbharato rājyamāgatāyābhisatkṛtam ,
nyāsaṁ niryātayāmāsa yuktaḥ paramayā mudā.
64. tasmai tat bharataḥ rājyam āgatāya abhisatkṛtam
nyāsam niryātayāmāsa yuktaḥ paramayā mudā
64. Filled with supreme joy, Bharata returned that kingdom as a trust to Rāma, who had arrived and been respectfully honored.
ततस्तं वैष्णवे शूरं नक्षत्रेऽभिमतेऽहनि ।
वसिष्ठो वामदेवश्च सहितावभ्यषिञ्चताम् ॥६५॥
65. tatastaṁ vaiṣṇave śūraṁ nakṣatre'bhimate'hani ,
vasiṣṭho vāmadevaśca sahitāvabhyaṣiñcatām.
65. tataḥ tam vaiṣṇave śūram nakṣatre abhimate ahani
vasiṣṭhaḥ vāmadevaḥ ca sahitau abhyaṣiñcatām
65. Then, Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, together, consecrated him (Rāma), the brave one, on an auspicious day in the beloved Viṣṇu-related constellation (nakṣatra).
सोऽभिषिक्तः कपिश्रेष्ठं सुग्रीवं ससुहृज्जनम् ।
विभीषणं च पौलस्त्यमन्वजानाद्गृहान्प्रति ॥६६॥
66. so'bhiṣiktaḥ kapiśreṣṭhaṁ sugrīvaṁ sasuhṛjjanam ,
vibhīṣaṇaṁ ca paulastyamanvajānādgṛhānprati.
66. saḥ abhiṣiktaḥ kapiśreṣṭham sugrīvam sasuhṛjjanam
vibhīṣaṇam ca paulastyam anvajānāt gṛhān prati
66. After his consecration, he (Rāma) permitted Sugriva, the chief of monkeys, along with his friends, and Vibhīṣaṇa, the descendant of Pulastya, to depart for their respective homes.
अभ्यर्च्य विविधै रत्नैः प्रीतियुक्तौ मुदा युतौ ।
समाधायेतिकर्तव्यं दुःखेन विससर्ज ह ॥६७॥
67. abhyarcya vividhai ratnaiḥ prītiyuktau mudā yutau ,
samādhāyetikartavyaṁ duḥkhena visasarja ha.

67. Having honored them with various jewels, and they (Sugriva and Vibhīṣaṇa) being filled with affection and joy, he (Rāma), after accomplishing what needed to be done, reluctantly dismissed them.
पुष्पकं च विमानं तत्पूजयित्वा स राघवः ।
प्रादाद्वैश्रवणायैव प्रीत्या स रघुनन्दनः ॥६८॥
68. puṣpakaṁ ca vimānaṁ tatpūjayitvā sa rāghavaḥ ,
prādādvaiśravaṇāyaiva prītyā sa raghunandanaḥ.
68. puṣpakam ca vimānam tat pūjayitvā saḥ rāghavaḥ
prādāt vaiśravaṇāya eva prītyā saḥ raghunandanaḥ
68. And that Puṣpaka aerial chariot, having honored it, Rāma (rāghava), the delight of the Raghu dynasty (raghunandana), affectionately (prītyā) gave it back to Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera) alone.
ततो देवर्षिसहितः सरितं गोमतीमनु ।
दशाश्वमेधानाजह्रे जारूथ्यान्स निरर्गलान् ॥६९॥
69. tato devarṣisahitaḥ saritaṁ gomatīmanu ,
daśāśvamedhānājahre jārūthyānsa nirargalān.

daśa-aśvamedhān ājahre jārūthyān saḥ nirargalān

69. Then, accompanied by divine sages, he performed ten unobstructed (nirargala) horse-Vedic rituals (aśvamedha-yajña) belonging to Jarutha (jārūthya), along the Gomati river.
