किर्मीरस्य वधं क्षत्तः श्रोतुमिच्छामि कथ्यताम् ।
रक्षसा भीमसेनस्य कथमासीत्समागमः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kirmīrasya vadhaṁ kṣattaḥ śrotumicchāmi kathyatām ,
rakṣasā bhīmasenasya kathamāsītsamāgamaḥ.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O charioteer, I wish to hear about the killing of Kirmīra; please tell me. How did the encounter (samāgamaḥ) between Bhīmasena and the rākṣasa take place?"
विदुर उवाच ।
शृणु भीमस्य कर्मेदमतिमानुषकर्मणः ।
श्रुतपूर्वं मया तेषां कथान्तेषु पुनः पुनः ॥२॥
2. vidura uvāca ,
śṛṇu bhīmasya karmedamatimānuṣakarmaṇaḥ ,
śrutapūrvaṁ mayā teṣāṁ kathānteṣu punaḥ punaḥ.
2. viduraḥ uvāca śṛṇu bhīmasya karma idam atimānuṣakarmaṇaḥ
śrutapūrvam mayā teṣām kathānteṣu punaḥ punaḥ
2. Vidura said: "Listen to this deed (karma) of Bhīma, who performs superhuman deeds (karma). I have heard it before, repeatedly, at the end of their narratives."
इतः प्रयाता राजेन्द्र पाण्डवा द्यूतनिर्जिताः ।
जग्मुस्त्रिभिरहोरात्रैः काम्यकं नाम तद्वनम् ॥३॥
3. itaḥ prayātā rājendra pāṇḍavā dyūtanirjitāḥ ,
jagmustribhirahorātraiḥ kāmyakaṁ nāma tadvanam.
3. itaḥ prayātā rājendra pāṇḍavā dyūtanirjitāḥ jagmuḥ
tribhiḥ ahorātraiḥ kāmmyakam nāma tat vanam
3. From here, the Pāṇḍavas, defeated in the game of dice, departed, O great king (rājendra). They reached that forest named Kāmmyaka in three days and nights.
रात्रौ निशीथे स्वाभीले गतेऽर्धसमये नृप ।
प्रचारे पुरुषादानां रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ॥४॥
4. rātrau niśīthe svābhīle gate'rdhasamaye nṛpa ,
pracāre puruṣādānāṁ rakṣasāṁ bhīmakarmaṇām.

4. O king (nṛpa), when half the time had passed, in the middle of a dreadful night, during the prowling of the man-eating (puruṣādānām) and terrifying (bhīmakarmaṇām) rākṣasas.
तद्वनं तापसा नित्यं शेषाश्च वनचारिणः ।
दूरात्परिहरन्ति स्म पुरुषादभयात्किल ॥५॥
5. tadvanaṁ tāpasā nityaṁ śeṣāśca vanacāriṇaḥ ,
dūrātpariharanti sma puruṣādabhayātkila.
5. tat vanam tāpasāḥ nityam śeṣāḥ ca vanacāriṇaḥ
dūrāt pariharanti sma puruṣāt abhayāt kila
5. Ascetics and other forest dwellers always avoided that forest from a distance, truly, out of fear of a certain man.
तेषां प्रविशतां तत्र मार्गमावृत्य भारत ।
दीप्ताक्षं भीषणं रक्षः सोल्मुकं प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥६॥
6. teṣāṁ praviśatāṁ tatra mārgamāvṛtya bhārata ,
dīptākṣaṁ bhīṣaṇaṁ rakṣaḥ solmukaṁ pratyadṛśyata.
6. teṣām praviśatām tatra mārgam āvṛtya bhārata
dīptākṣam bhīṣaṇam rakṣaḥ sa-ulmukam prati-adṛśyata
6. O Bhārata, as they were entering there, a terrifying demon with blazing eyes and holding a flaming brand appeared, blocking their path.
बाहू महान्तौ कृत्वा तु तथास्यं च भयानकम् ।
स्थितमावृत्य पन्थानं येन यान्ति कुरूद्वहाः ॥७॥
7. bāhū mahāntau kṛtvā tu tathāsyaṁ ca bhayānakam ,
sthitamāvṛtya panthānaṁ yena yānti kurūdvahāḥ.

sthitam āvṛtya panthānam yena yānti kurūdvahāḥ
7. Having made its two arms enormous and its mouth equally terrifying, it stood blocking the path by which the chiefs of the Kurus proceeded.
दष्टोष्ठदंष्ट्रं ताम्राक्षं प्रदीप्तोर्ध्वशिरोरुहम् ।
सार्करश्मितडिच्चक्रं सबलाकमिवाम्बुदम् ॥८॥
8. daṣṭoṣṭhadaṁṣṭraṁ tāmrākṣaṁ pradīptordhvaśiroruham ,
sārkaraśmitaḍiccakraṁ sabalākamivāmbudam.
8. daṣṭoṣṭhadaṃṣṭram tāmrākṣam pradīptordhvaśiroruham
sārkarasmitadiçcakram sabalākam iva ambudam
8. Its lip was bitten by its fangs, its eyes were coppery-red, and its hair stood blazing upwards; it was like a cloud accompanied by sunbeams, streaks of lightning, and cranes.
सृजन्तं राक्षसीं मायां महारावविराविणम् ।
मुञ्चन्तं विपुलं नादं सतोयमिव तोयदम् ॥९॥
9. sṛjantaṁ rākṣasīṁ māyāṁ mahārāvavirāviṇam ,
muñcantaṁ vipulaṁ nādaṁ satoyamiva toyadam.
9. sṛjantam rākṣasīm māyām mahārāvavirāviṇam
muñcantam vipulam nādam satoyam iva toyadam
9. Creating a monstrous illusion (māyā) and roaring with a great cry, emitting a vast sound like a water-filled cloud.
तस्य नादेन संत्रस्ताः पक्षिणः सर्वतोदिशम् ।
विमुक्तनादाः संपेतुः स्थलजा जलजैः सह ॥१०॥
10. tasya nādena saṁtrastāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ sarvatodiśam ,
vimuktanādāḥ saṁpetuḥ sthalajā jalajaiḥ saha.
10. tasya nādena saṃtrastāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ sarvatodiśam
vimuktanādāḥ saṃpetuḥ sthalajā jalajaiḥ saha
10. Terrified by his sound, the birds, both land-dwelling and water-dwelling, fled in all directions, having ceased their cries.
संप्रद्रुतमृगद्वीपिमहिषर्क्षसमाकुलम् ।
तद्वनं तस्य नादेन संप्रस्थितमिवाभवत् ॥११॥
11. saṁpradrutamṛgadvīpimahiṣarkṣasamākulam ,
tadvanaṁ tasya nādena saṁprasthitamivābhavat.
11. saṃpradrutamṛgadvīpimahiṣarkṣasamākulam tat
vanam tasya nādena saṃprasthitam iva abhavat
11. That forest, crowded with fleeing deer, leopards, buffaloes, and bears, became as if it had itself moved away due to his sound.
तस्योरुवाताभिहता ताम्रपल्लवबाहवः ।
विदूरजाताश्च लताः समाश्लिष्यन्त पादपान् ॥१२॥
12. tasyoruvātābhihatā tāmrapallavabāhavaḥ ,
vidūrajātāśca latāḥ samāśliṣyanta pādapān.
12. tasya uruvātābhihatā tāmrapallavabāhavaḥ
vidūrajātāḥ ca latāḥ samāśliṣyanta pādapān
12. Struck by his mighty wind, the creepers (latā), which had coppery sprouts for branches and grew extensively, clung tightly to the trees.
तस्मिन्क्षणेऽथ प्रववौ मारुतो भृशदारुणः ।
रजसा संवृतं तेन नष्टर्क्षमभवन्नभः ॥१३॥
13. tasminkṣaṇe'tha pravavau māruto bhṛśadāruṇaḥ ,
rajasā saṁvṛtaṁ tena naṣṭarkṣamabhavannabhaḥ.
13. tasmin kṣaṇe atha pravavau mārutaḥ bhṛśadāruṇaḥ
rajasā saṃvṛtam tena naṣṭarkṣam abhavat nabhaḥ
13. At that very moment, a very fierce wind began to blow. The sky became devoid of stars, completely enveloped by the dust it raised.
पञ्चानां पाण्डुपुत्राणामविज्ञातो महारिपुः ।
पञ्चानामिन्द्रियाणां तु शोकवेग इवातुलः ॥१४॥
14. pañcānāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmavijñāto mahāripuḥ ,
pañcānāmindriyāṇāṁ tu śokavega ivātulaḥ.
14. pañcānām pāṇḍuputrāṇām avijñātaḥ mahāripuḥ
pañcānām indriyāṇām tu śokavegaḥ iva atulaḥ
14. He was an unknown great enemy to the five sons of Pāṇḍu, like an incomparable surge of sorrow for the five senses.
स दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवान्दूरात्कृष्णाजिनसमावृतान् ।
आवृणोत्तद्वनद्वारं मैनाक इव पर्वतः ॥१५॥
15. sa dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāndūrātkṛṣṇājinasamāvṛtān ,
āvṛṇottadvanadvāraṁ maināka iva parvataḥ.
15. saḥ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavān dūrāt kṛṣṇājinasaṃāvṛtān
āvṛṇot tat vanadvāram mainākaḥ iva parvataḥ
15. Having seen the Pāṇḍavas, who were covered in black deer skins, from a distance, he blocked the entrance to that forest, just as Mount Maināka would.
तं समासाद्य वित्रस्ता कृष्णा कमललोचना ।
अदृष्टपूर्वं संत्रासान्न्यमीलयत लोचने ॥१६॥
16. taṁ samāsādya vitrastā kṛṣṇā kamalalocanā ,
adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ saṁtrāsānnyamīlayata locane.
16. tam samāsādya vitrastā kṛṣṇā kamalalocanā
adṛṣṭapūrvam saṃtrāsāt nyamīlayata locane
16. Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi), with her lotus-like eyes, was terrified upon approaching him. Out of fear of what she had never seen before, she closed her eyes.
दुःशासनकरोत्सृष्टविप्रकीर्णशिरोरुहा ।
पञ्चपर्वतमध्यस्था नदीवाकुलतां गता ॥१७॥
17. duḥśāsanakarotsṛṣṭaviprakīrṇaśiroruhā ,
pañcaparvatamadhyasthā nadīvākulatāṁ gatā.
17. duḥśāsanakaretsṛṣṭaviprakīrṇaśiroruhā
pañcaparvatamadhyasthā nadī iva ākulatām gatā
17. With her hair released and scattered by Duḥśāsana's hands, she became agitated, like a river flowing between five mountains.
मोमुह्यमानां तां तत्र जगृहुः पञ्च पाण्डवाः ।
इन्द्रियाणि प्रसक्तानि विषयेषु यथा रतिम् ॥१८॥
18. momuhyamānāṁ tāṁ tatra jagṛhuḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
indriyāṇi prasaktāni viṣayeṣu yathā ratim.
18. momuhyamānām tām tatra jagṛhuḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ
indriyāṇi prasaktāni viṣayeṣu yathā ratim
18. There, the five Pāṇḍavas took hold of her, who was utterly bewildered, just as the senses, when fully engaged with their objects, grasp at objects of pleasure.
अथ तां राक्षसीं मायामुत्थितां घोरदर्शनाम् ।
रक्षोघ्नैर्विविधैर्मन्त्रैर्धौम्यः सम्यक्प्रयोजितैः ।
पश्यतां पाण्डुपुत्राणां नाशयामास वीर्यवान् ॥१९॥
19. atha tāṁ rākṣasīṁ māyāmutthitāṁ ghoradarśanām ,
rakṣoghnairvividhairmantrairdhaumyaḥ samyakprayojitaiḥ ,
paśyatāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ nāśayāmāsa vīryavān.
19. atha tām rākṣasīm māyām utthitām
ghoradarśanām rakṣoghnaiḥ vividhaiḥ
mantraiḥ dhaumyaḥ samyakprayojitaiḥ
paśyatām pāṇḍuputrāṇām nāśayāmāsa vīryavān
19. Then, the powerful Dhaumya, with various demon-slaying incantations (mantra) properly applied, destroyed that terrifying-looking demonic illusion (māyā) which had manifested, while the sons of Pāṇḍu watched.
स नष्टमायोऽतिबलः क्रोधविस्फारितेक्षणः ।
काममूर्तिधरः क्षुद्रः कालकल्पो व्यदृश्यत ॥२०॥
20. sa naṣṭamāyo'tibalaḥ krodhavisphāritekṣaṇaḥ ,
kāmamūrtidharaḥ kṣudraḥ kālakalpo vyadṛśyata.
20. saḥ naṣṭamāyaḥ atibalaḥ krodhavisphāritekṣaṇaḥ
kāmamūrtidharaḥ kṣudraḥ kālakalpaḥ vyadṛśyata
20. His illusion (māyā) destroyed, he became exceedingly powerful, his eyes wide with rage. Though inherently base, he assumed a form like Kāma, the god of love, but appeared like the very embodiment of Death (Kāla).
तमुवाच ततो राजा दीर्घप्रज्ञो युधिष्ठिरः ।
को भवान्कस्य वा किं ते क्रियतां कार्यमुच्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. tamuvāca tato rājā dīrghaprajño yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
ko bhavānkasya vā kiṁ te kriyatāṁ kāryamucyatām.
21. tam uvāca tataḥ rājā dīrghaprajñaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
kaḥ bhavān kasya vā kim te kriyatām kāryam ucyatām
21. Then King Yudhishthira, who possessed profound wisdom, spoke to him: "Who are you? Whose are you? What can be done for you? Please state your purpose."
प्रत्युवाचाथ तद्रक्षो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
अहं बकस्य वै भ्राता किर्मीर इति विश्रुतः ॥२२॥
22. pratyuvācātha tadrakṣo dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
ahaṁ bakasya vai bhrātā kirmīra iti viśrutaḥ.
22. prati uvāca atha tat rakṣaḥ dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
aham bakasya vai bhrātā kirmīra iti viśrutaḥ
22. Then that rākṣasa replied to Yudhishthira, the king of dharma (dharma-rāja): "I am Kirmira, indeed well-known as the brother of Baka."
वनेऽस्मिन्काम्यके शून्ये निवसामि गतज्वरः ।
युधि निर्जित्य पुरुषानाहारं नित्यमाचरन् ॥२३॥
23. vane'sminkāmyake śūnye nivasāmi gatajvaraḥ ,
yudhi nirjitya puruṣānāhāraṁ nityamācaran.
23. vane asmin kāmyake śūnye nivasāmi gatajvaraḥ
yudhi nirjitya puruṣān āhāram nityam ācaran
23. Free from anxiety, I dwell in this deserted Kamyaka forest, constantly making men my food by conquering them in battle.
के यूयमिह संप्राप्ता भक्ष्यभूता ममान्तिकम् ।
युधि निर्जित्य वः सर्वान्भक्षयिष्ये गतज्वरः ॥२४॥
24. ke yūyamiha saṁprāptā bhakṣyabhūtā mamāntikam ,
yudhi nirjitya vaḥ sarvānbhakṣayiṣye gatajvaraḥ.
24. ke yūyam iha samprāptāḥ bhakṣyabhūtāḥ mama antikam
yudhi nirjitya vaḥ sarvān bhakṣayiṣye gatajvaraḥ
24. "Who are you all, having arrived here near me, to become my food? Having conquered all of you in battle, I will devour you, free from anxiety."
युधिष्ठिरस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य दुरात्मनः ।
आचचक्षे ततः सर्वं गोत्रनामादि भारत ॥२५॥
25. yudhiṣṭhirastu tacchrutvā vacastasya durātmanaḥ ,
ācacakṣe tataḥ sarvaṁ gotranāmādi bhārata.
25. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu tat śrutvā vacaḥ tasya durātmanaḥ
ācacakṣe tataḥ sarvam gotranāmādi bhārata
25. But Yudhishthira, having heard that speech of the evil-minded one, then recounted everything regarding his lineage (gotra) and name, O Bharata.
पाण्डवो धर्मराजोऽहं यदि ते श्रोत्रमागतः ।
सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैर्भीमसेनार्जुनादिभिः ॥२६॥
26. pāṇḍavo dharmarājo'haṁ yadi te śrotramāgataḥ ,
sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvairbhīmasenārjunādibhiḥ.
26. pāṇḍavaḥ dharmarājaḥ aham yadi te śrotram āgataḥ
sahitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ bhīmasenārjunādibhiḥ
26. I am Yudhishthira (dharmarāja), a son of Pāṇḍu, if that name has reached your ears, along with all my brothers, including Bhīmasena and Arjuna.
हृतराज्यो वने वासं वस्तुं कृतमतिस्ततः ।
वनमभ्यागतो घोरमिदं तव परिग्रहम् ॥२७॥
27. hṛtarājyo vane vāsaṁ vastuṁ kṛtamatistataḥ ,
vanamabhyāgato ghoramidaṁ tava parigraham.
27. hṛtarājyaḥ vane vāsam vastum kṛtamatiḥ tataḥ
vanam abhyāgataḥ ghoram idam tava parigraham
27. Having been deprived of my kingdom, I resolved to reside in the forest (vana). Therefore, I have come to this terrible forest (vana), which is under your dominion.
किर्मीरस्त्वब्रवीदेनं दिष्ट्या देवैरिदं मम ।
उपपादितमद्येह चिरकालान्मनोगतम् ॥२८॥
28. kirmīrastvabravīdenaṁ diṣṭyā devairidaṁ mama ,
upapāditamadyeha cirakālānmanogatam.
28. kirmīraḥ tu abravīt enam diṣṭyā devaiḥ idam
mama upapāditam adya iha cirakālāt manogatam
28. Then Kirmīra said to him, 'By good fortune, this long-cherished desire of mine has been brought about here today by the gods!'
भीमसेनवधार्थं हि नित्यमभ्युद्यतायुधः ।
चरामि पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां नैनमासादयाम्यहम् ॥२९॥
29. bhīmasenavadhārthaṁ hi nityamabhyudyatāyudhaḥ ,
carāmi pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāṁ nainamāsādayāmyaham.
29. bhīmasenavadhārtham hi nityam abhyudyatāyudhaḥ
carāmi pṛthivīm kṛtsnām na enam āsādayāmi aham
29. Indeed, I constantly wander the entire earth with my weapon uplifted, intent on killing Bhimasena, but I never manage to find him.
सोऽयमासादितो दिष्ट्या भ्रातृहा काङ्क्षितश्चिरम् ।
अनेन हि मम भ्राता बको विनिहतः प्रियः ॥३०॥
30. so'yamāsādito diṣṭyā bhrātṛhā kāṅkṣitaściram ,
anena hi mama bhrātā bako vinihataḥ priyaḥ.
30. saḥ ayam āsāditaḥ diṣṭyā bhrātṛhā kāṅkṣitaḥ
ciram anena hi mama bhrātā bakaḥ vinihataḥ priyaḥ
30. Fortunately, I have at last found him - this brother-killer (bhrātṛhā) whom I have sought for a long time. Indeed, it was by him that my dear brother Baka was slain.
वेत्रकीयगृहे राजन्ब्राह्मणच्छद्मरूपिणा ।
विद्याबलमुपाश्रित्य न ह्यस्त्यस्यौरसं बलम् ॥३१॥
31. vetrakīyagṛhe rājanbrāhmaṇacchadmarūpiṇā ,
vidyābalamupāśritya na hyastyasyaurasaṁ balam.
31. vetrakīyagṛhe rājan brāhmaṇacchadmarūpiṇā
vidyābalam upāśritya na hi asti asya aurasam balam
31. O King, it was in the house of Vetrakīya that he, disguised as a brahmin, accomplished this by relying on the power of his knowledge (vidyābala). Indeed, his natural (aurasam) strength is not truly his own.
हिडिम्बश्च सखा मह्यं दयितो वनगोचरः ।
हतो दुरात्मनानेन स्वसा चास्य हृता पुरा ॥३२॥
32. hiḍimbaśca sakhā mahyaṁ dayito vanagocaraḥ ,
hato durātmanānena svasā cāsya hṛtā purā.
32. hiḍimbaḥ ca sakhā mahyam dayitaḥ vanagocaraḥ
hataḥ durātmanā anena svasā ca asya hṛtā purā
32. And Hiḍimba, my beloved forest-dwelling friend, was killed by this evil-minded one (durātman). Furthermore, his sister was carried away by him long ago.
सोऽयमभ्यागतो मूढो ममेदं गहनं वनम् ।
प्रचारसमयेऽस्माकमर्धरात्रे समास्थिते ॥३३॥
33. so'yamabhyāgato mūḍho mamedaṁ gahanaṁ vanam ,
pracārasamaye'smākamardharātre samāsthite.
33. saḥ ayam abhyāgataḥ mūḍhaḥ mama idam gahanam
vanam pracārasamaye asmākam ardharātre samāsthite
33. This foolish one has arrived in my dense forest at the very time of our roaming, now that midnight has settled.
अद्यास्य यातयिष्यामि तद्वैरं चिरसंभृतम् ।
तर्पयिष्यामि च बकं रुधिरेणास्य भूरिणा ॥३४॥
34. adyāsya yātayiṣyāmi tadvairaṁ cirasaṁbhṛtam ,
tarpayiṣyāmi ca bakaṁ rudhireṇāsya bhūriṇā.
34. adya asya yātayiṣyāmi tat vairam cirasaṃbhṛtam
tarpayiṣyāmi ca bakam rudhireṇa asya bhūriṇā
34. Today, I will make him suffer for that long-accumulated enmity, and I will satiate Baka with his ample blood.
अद्याहमनृणो भूत्वा भ्रातुः सख्युस्तथैव च ।
शान्तिं लब्धास्मि परमां हत्व राक्षसकण्टकम् ॥३५॥
35. adyāhamanṛṇo bhūtvā bhrātuḥ sakhyustathaiva ca ,
śāntiṁ labdhāsmi paramāṁ hatva rākṣasakaṇṭakam.
35. adya aham anṛṇaḥ bhūtvā bhrātuḥ sakhyuḥ tathā eva
ca śāntim labdhā asmi paramām hatvā rākṣasakantakam
35. Today, having become free from my obligation to my brother and also to my friend, I shall obtain supreme peace (śānti) by killing this demon-like impediment.
यदि तेन पुरा मुक्तो भीमसेनो बकेन वै ।
अद्यैनं भक्षयिष्यामि पश्यतस्ते युधिष्ठिर ॥३६॥
36. yadi tena purā mukto bhīmaseno bakena vai ,
adyainaṁ bhakṣayiṣyāmi paśyataste yudhiṣṭhira.
36. yadi tena purā muktaḥ bhīmasenaḥ bakena vai
adya enam bhakṣayiṣyāmi paśyataḥ te yudhiṣṭhira
36. O Yudhishthira, if Bhimasena was indeed released by Baka in the past, then today I shall devour him right before your eyes.
एनं हि विपुलप्राणमद्य हत्वा वृकोदरम् ।
संभक्ष्य जरयिष्यामि यथागस्त्यो महासुरम् ॥३७॥
37. enaṁ hi vipulaprāṇamadya hatvā vṛkodaram ,
saṁbhakṣya jarayiṣyāmi yathāgastyo mahāsuram.
37. enam hi vipulaprāṇam adya hatvā vṛkodaram
saṃbhakṣya jarayiṣyāmi yathā agastyaḥ mahāsuram
37. Today, having certainly killed this mighty Bhīma (Vṛkodara), who possesses immense life-force, I will devour and digest him, just as Agastya digested the great demon.
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा सत्यसंधो युधिष्ठिरः ।
नैतदस्तीति सक्रोधो भर्त्सयामास राक्षसम् ॥३८॥
38. evamuktastu dharmātmā satyasaṁdho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
naitadastīti sakrodho bhartsayāmāsa rākṣasam.
38. evam uktaḥ tu dharmātmā satyasaṃdhaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
na etat asti iti sakrodhaḥ bhartsayāmāsa rākṣasam
38. But when spoken to thus, the righteous-souled (dharma) Yudhiṣṭhira, who was firm in truth, became enraged and rebuked the demon, saying, "This is not so!"
ततो भीमो महाबाहुरारुज्य तरसा द्रुम ।
दशव्याममिवोद्विद्धं निष्पत्रमकरोत्तदा ॥३९॥
39. tato bhīmo mahābāhurārujya tarasā druma ,
daśavyāmamivodviddhaṁ niṣpatramakarottadā.
39. tataḥ bhīmaḥ mahābāhuḥ ārujya tarasā drumam
daśavyāmam iva uddviddham niṣpatram akarot tadā
39. Then, the mighty-armed Bhīma, swiftly uprooting a tall, tree, as if ten fathoms high, immediately stripped it of its leaves.
चकार सज्यं गाण्डीवं वज्रनिष्पेषगौरवम् ।
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण तथैव विजयोऽर्जुनः ॥४०॥
40. cakāra sajyaṁ gāṇḍīvaṁ vajraniṣpeṣagauravam ,
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tathaiva vijayo'rjunaḥ.
40. cakāra sajyam gāṇḍīvam vajraniṣpeṣagauravam
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tathā eva vijayaḥ arjunaḥ
40. And similarly, the victorious Arjuna (Vijaya), in the mere interval of a wink, strung his Gāṇḍīva bow, which possessed the formidable sound of a thunderbolt's crash.
निवार्य भीमो जिष्णुं तु तद्रक्षो घोरदर्शनम् ।
अभिद्रुत्याब्रवीद्वाक्यं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति भारत ॥४१॥
41. nivārya bhīmo jiṣṇuṁ tu tadrakṣo ghoradarśanam ,
abhidrutyābravīdvākyaṁ tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti bhārata.
41. nivārya bhīmaḥ jiṣṇum tu tat rakṣaḥ ghoradarśanam
abhidrutya abravīt vākyam tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti bhārata
41. O descendant of Bharata, Bhima, after stopping Arjuna (Jiṣṇu), rushed towards that terrifying-looking demon (rakṣas) and said these words: "Stop! Stop!"
इत्युक्त्वैनमभिक्रुद्धः कक्ष्यामुत्पीड्य पाण्डवः ।
निष्पिष्य पाणिना पाणिं संदष्टोष्ठपुटो बली ।
तमभ्यधावद्वेगेन भीमो वृक्षायुधस्तदा ॥४२॥
42. ityuktvainamabhikruddhaḥ kakṣyāmutpīḍya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
niṣpiṣya pāṇinā pāṇiṁ saṁdaṣṭoṣṭhapuṭo balī ,
tamabhyadhāvadvegena bhīmo vṛkṣāyudhastadā.
42. iti uktvā enam abhikruddhaḥ kakṣyām
utpīḍya pāṇḍavaḥ niṣpiṣya pāṇinā pāṇim
saṃdaṣṭoṣṭhapuṭaḥ balī tam abhi
adhāvat vegena bhīmaḥ vṛkṣāyudhaḥ tadā
42. Having spoken thus, the enraged son of Pāṇḍu (Bhīma), a mighty warrior who used trees as weapons, tightened his belt, rubbed his hands together, and with his lips pressed tight in anger, he then rushed towards that demon with great speed.
यमदण्डप्रतीकाशं ततस्तं तस्य मूर्धनि ।
पातयामास वेगेन कुलिशं मघवानिव ॥४३॥
43. yamadaṇḍapratīkāśaṁ tatastaṁ tasya mūrdhani ,
pātayāmāsa vegena kuliśaṁ maghavāniva.
43. yamadaṇḍapratīkāśam tataḥ tam tasya mūrdhani
pātayāmāsa vegena kuliśam maghavān iva
43. Then, with great force, he struck that demon on his head with the tree, which was like Yama's mace, just as Indra (Maghavān) strikes with his thunderbolt (kuliśa).
असंभ्रान्तं तु तद्रक्षः समरे प्रत्यदृश्यत ।
चिक्षेप चोल्मुकं दीप्तमशनिं ज्वलितामिव ॥४४॥
44. asaṁbhrāntaṁ tu tadrakṣaḥ samare pratyadṛśyata ,
cikṣepa colmukaṁ dīptamaśaniṁ jvalitāmiva.
44. asaṃbhrāntam tu tat rakṣaḥ samare prati adṛśyata
cikṣepa ca ulmukam dīptam aśanim jvalitām iva
44. But that demon (rakṣas) appeared undisturbed in battle. He then hurled a flaming brand, much like a blazing thunderbolt (aśani).
तदुदस्तमलातं तु भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ।
पदा सव्येन चिक्षेप तद्रक्षः पुनराव्रजत् ॥४५॥
45. tadudastamalātaṁ tu bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ ,
padā savyena cikṣepa tadrakṣaḥ punarāvrajat.
45. tat udastamalātam tu bhīmaḥ praharatām varaḥ
padā savyena cikṣepa tat rakṣaḥ punar āvrajat
45. Bhima, the foremost among strikers, hurled that uplifted burning brand with his left foot, but that demon (rakṣas) immediately came back.
किर्मीरश्चापि सहसा वृक्षमुत्पाट्य पाण्डवम् ।
दण्डपाणिरिव क्रुद्धः समरे प्रत्ययुध्यत ॥४६॥
46. kirmīraścāpi sahasā vṛkṣamutpāṭya pāṇḍavam ,
daṇḍapāṇiriva kruddhaḥ samare pratyayudhyata.
46. kirmīraḥ ca api sahasā vṛkṣam utpāṭya pāṇḍavam
daṇḍapāṇiḥ iva kruddhaḥ samare pratyayudhyata
46. And Kirmira too, suddenly uprooting a tree, fiercely fought against the Pandava (Bhima) in battle, enraged like (Yama) wielding a staff.
तद्वृक्षयुद्धमभवन्महीरुहविनाशनम् ।
वालिसुग्रीवयोर्भ्रात्रोर्यथा श्रीकाङ्क्षिणोः पुरा ॥४७॥
47. tadvṛkṣayuddhamabhavanmahīruhavināśanam ,
vālisugrīvayorbhrātroryathā śrīkāṅkṣiṇoḥ purā.
47. tat vṛkṣayuddham abhavat mahīruhavināśanam
vālisugrīvayoḥ bhrātrayoḥ yathā śrīkāṅkṣiṇoḥ purā
47. That tree-battle, devastating trees, was like the one between the two brothers, Vali and Sugriva, who formerly vied for royal fortune (śrī).
शीर्षयोः पतिता वृक्षा बिभिदुर्नैकधा तयोः ।
यथैवोत्पलपद्मानि मत्तयोर्द्विपयोस्तथा ॥४८॥
48. śīrṣayoḥ patitā vṛkṣā bibhidurnaikadhā tayoḥ ,
yathaivotpalapadmāni mattayordvipayostathā.
48. śīrṣayoḥ patitā vṛkṣā bibhidur na ekadhā tayoḥ
yathā eva utpalapadmāni mattayoḥ dvipayoḥ tathā
48. The trees, falling upon their heads, were shattered in countless ways, just as water-lilies and lotuses are crushed by two intoxicated elephants.
मुञ्जवज्जर्जरीभूता बहवस्तत्र पादपाः ।
चीराणीव व्युदस्तानि रेजुस्तत्र महावने ॥४९॥
49. muñjavajjarjarībhūtā bahavastatra pādapāḥ ,
cīrāṇīva vyudastāni rejustatra mahāvane.
49. muñjavat jarjarībhūtāḥ bahavaḥ tatra pādaāḥ
cīrāṇi iva vyudastāni rejuḥ tatra mahāvane
49. Many trees there, shattered like muñja grass, appeared like scattered rags in that great forest.
तद्वृक्षयुद्धमभवत्सुमुहूर्तं विशां पते ।
राक्षसानां च मुख्यस्य नराणामुत्तमस्य च ॥५०॥
50. tadvṛkṣayuddhamabhavatsumuhūrtaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
rākṣasānāṁ ca mukhyasya narāṇāmuttamasya ca.
50. tat vṛkṣayuddham abhavat sumuhūrtam viśām pate
rākṣasānām ca mukhyasya narāṇām uttamasya ca
50. O Lord of the people, that tree-battle occurred for a considerable time between the chief of the rākṣasas and the best among men.
ततः शिलां समुत्क्षिप्य भीमस्य युधि तिष्ठतः ।
प्राहिणोद्राक्षसः क्रुद्धो भीमसेनश्चचाल ह ॥५१॥
51. tataḥ śilāṁ samutkṣipya bhīmasya yudhi tiṣṭhataḥ ,
prāhiṇodrākṣasaḥ kruddho bhīmasenaścacāla ha.
51. tataḥ śilām samutkṣipya bhīmasya yudhi tiṣṭhataḥ
prāhiṇot rākṣasaḥ kruddhaḥ bhīmasenaḥ cacāla ha
51. Then, the enraged rākṣasa, having lifted a stone, hurled it at Bhima, who was standing in battle, and Bhimasena indeed trembled.
तं शिलाताडनजडं पर्यधावत्स राक्षसः ।
बाहुविक्षिप्तकिरणः स्वर्भानुरिव भास्करम् ॥५२॥
52. taṁ śilātāḍanajaḍaṁ paryadhāvatsa rākṣasaḥ ,
bāhuvikṣiptakiraṇaḥ svarbhānuriva bhāskaram.
52. tam śilātaḍanajaḍam paryadhāvat saḥ rākṣasaḥ
bāhuvikṣiptakiraṇaḥ svarbhānuḥ iva bhāskaram
52. That rākṣasa then attacked him, who was stunned by the stone's blow, just as Rāhu (svarbhānu) attacks the sun (bhāskara), scattering its rays with his arms.
तावन्योन्यं समाश्लिष्य प्रकर्षन्तौ परस्परम् ।
उभावपि चकाशेते प्रयुद्धौ वृषभाविव ॥५३॥
53. tāvanyonyaṁ samāśliṣya prakarṣantau parasparam ,
ubhāvapi cakāśete prayuddhau vṛṣabhāviva.
53. tau anyonyam samāśliṣya prakarṣantau parasparam
ubhau api cakāśete prayuddhau vṛṣabhau iva
53. Grappling and pulling each other, the two of them appeared like two bulls fighting intensely.
तयोरासीत्सुतुमुलः संप्रहारः सुदारुणः ।
नखदंष्ट्रायुधवतोर्व्याघ्रयोरिव दृप्तयोः ॥५४॥
54. tayorāsītsutumulaḥ saṁprahāraḥ sudāruṇaḥ ,
nakhadaṁṣṭrāyudhavatorvyāghrayoriva dṛptayoḥ.
54. tayoḥ āsīt sutumulaḥ saṃprahāraḥ sudāruṇaḥ
nakha-daṃṣṭra-āyudhavatoḥ vyāghrayoḥ iva dṛptayoḥ
54. Their combat was extremely tumultuous and terrible, like that of two arrogant tigers whose weapons are claws and fangs.
दुर्योधननिकाराच्च बाहुवीर्याच्च दर्पितः ।
कृष्णानयनदृष्टश्च व्यवर्धत वृकोदरः ॥५५॥
55. duryodhananikārācca bāhuvīryācca darpitaḥ ,
kṛṣṇānayanadṛṣṭaśca vyavardhata vṛkodaraḥ.
55. duryodhana-nikārāt ca bāhu-vīryāt ca darpitaḥ
kṛṣṇā-ānayana-dṛṣṭaḥ ca vyavardhata vṛkodaraḥ
55. Enraged by Duryodhana's humiliation and by the might of his own arms, and having been seen by Draupadi, Vrikodara (Bhima) grew (in power and ferocity).
अभिपत्याथ बाहुभ्यां प्रत्यगृह्णादमर्षितः ।
मातङ्ग इव मातङ्गं प्रभिन्नकरटामुखः ॥५६॥
56. abhipatyātha bāhubhyāṁ pratyagṛhṇādamarṣitaḥ ,
mātaṅga iva mātaṅgaṁ prabhinnakaraṭāmukhaḥ.
56. abhipatya atha bāhubhyām prati-agṛhṇāt amarṣitaḥ
mātaṅgaḥ iva mātaṅgam prabhinna-karaṭā-mukhaḥ
56. Then, rushing forward, the enraged (Bhima) seized (Duryodhana) with his two arms, just as an elephant in rut, with ichor streaming from its temples and face, grapples another elephant.
तं चाप्याथ ततो रक्षः प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान् ।
तमाक्षिपद्भीमसेनो बलेन बलिनां वरः ॥५७॥
57. taṁ cāpyātha tato rakṣaḥ pratijagrāha vīryavān ,
tamākṣipadbhīmaseno balena balināṁ varaḥ.
57. tam ca api atha tataḥ rakṣaḥ pratijagrāha vīryavān
tam ākṣipat bhīmasenaḥ balena balinām varaḥ
57. First, the mighty Rākṣasa seized him (Bhīma). Then, Bhīmasena, the foremost among the strong, hurled that (Rākṣasa) down with his power.
तयोर्भुजविनिष्पेषादुभयोर्बलिनोस्तदा ।
शब्दः समभवद्घोरो वेणुस्फोटसमो युधि ॥५८॥
58. tayorbhujaviniṣpeṣādubhayorbalinostadā ,
śabdaḥ samabhavadghoro veṇusphoṭasamo yudhi.
58. tayoḥ bhuja-viniṣpeṣāt ubhayoḥ balinoḥ tadā
śabdaḥ samabhavat ghoraḥ veṇu-sphoṭa-samaḥ yudhi
58. Then, in that battle, from the forceful collision of the arms of those two powerful combatants, a dreadful sound arose, resembling the cracking of a bamboo stalk.
अथैनमाक्षिप्य बलाद्गृह्य मध्ये वृकोदरः ।
धूनयामास वेगेन वायुश्चण्ड इव द्रुमम् ॥५९॥
59. athainamākṣipya balādgṛhya madhye vṛkodaraḥ ,
dhūnayāmāsa vegena vāyuścaṇḍa iva drumam.
59. atha enam ākṣipya balāt gṛhya madhye vṛkodaraḥ
dhūnayāmāsa vegena vāyuḥ caṇḍaḥ iva drumam
59. Then, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), having forcefully pulled and seized him (the Rākṣasa) around his middle, vigorously shook him, just as a violent wind sways a tree.
स भीमेन परामृष्टो दुर्बलो बलिना रणे ।
व्यस्पन्दत यथाप्राणं विचकर्ष च पाण्डवम् ॥६०॥
60. sa bhīmena parāmṛṣṭo durbalo balinā raṇe ,
vyaspandata yathāprāṇaṁ vicakarṣa ca pāṇḍavam.
60. saḥ bhīmena parāmṛṣṭaḥ durbalaḥ balinā raṇe
vyaspandata yathāprāṇam vicakarṣa ca pāṇḍavam
60. Seized in battle by the mighty Bhīma, that now weak (Rākṣasa) struggled with all his remaining strength and also dragged the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma).
तत एनं परिश्रान्तमुपलभ्य वृकोदरः ।
योक्त्रयामास बाहुभ्यां पशुं रशनया यथा ॥६१॥
61. tata enaṁ pariśrāntamupalabhya vṛkodaraḥ ,
yoktrayāmāsa bāhubhyāṁ paśuṁ raśanayā yathā.
61. tataḥ enam pariśrāntam upalabhya vṛkodaraḥ
yoktrayāmāsa bāhubhyām paśum raśanayā yathā
61. Then, perceiving him to be utterly exhausted, Vrikodara tied him up with his arms, just as one ties an animal with a rope.
विनदन्तं महानादं भिन्नभेरीसमस्वनम् ।
भ्रामयामास सुचिरं विस्फुरन्तमचेतसम् ॥६२॥
62. vinadantaṁ mahānādaṁ bhinnabherīsamasvanam ,
bhrāmayāmāsa suciraṁ visphurantamacetasam.
62. vinadantam mahānādam bhinnabherīsamasvanam
bhrāmayāmāsa suciram visphurantam acetasam
62. He whirled him around for a long time while he roared with a mighty sound, a sound like a broken drum, struggling and then becoming senseless.
तं विषीदन्तमाज्ञाय राक्षसं पाण्डुनन्दनः ।
प्रगृह्य तरसा दोर्भ्यां पशुमारममारयत् ॥६३॥
63. taṁ viṣīdantamājñāya rākṣasaṁ pāṇḍunandanaḥ ,
pragṛhya tarasā dorbhyāṁ paśumāramamārayat.
63. tam viṣīdantam ājñāya rākṣasam pāṇḍunandanaḥ
pragṛhya tarasā dorbhyām paśumāram amārayat
63. Realizing that demon was failing, the son of Pandu (Bhima) forcefully seized him with both arms and slew him with a beastly slaughter.
आक्रम्य स कटीदेशे जानुना राक्षसाधमम् ।
अपीडयत बाहुभ्यां कण्ठं तस्य वृकोदरः ॥६४॥
64. ākramya sa kaṭīdeśe jānunā rākṣasādhamam ,
apīḍayata bāhubhyāṁ kaṇṭhaṁ tasya vṛkodaraḥ.

apīḍayat bāhubhyām kaṇṭham tasya vṛkodaraḥ
64. Stepping on the region of the wretched demon's waist with his knee, Vrikodara (Bhima) then crushed his (the demon's) throat with his arms.
अथ तं जडसर्वाङ्गं व्यावृत्तनयनोल्बणम् ।
भूतले पातयामास वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥६५॥
65. atha taṁ jaḍasarvāṅgaṁ vyāvṛttanayanolbaṇam ,
bhūtale pātayāmāsa vākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha.
65. atha tam jaḍasarvāṅgam vyāvṛttanayanolbaṇam
bhūtale pātayāmāsa vākyam ca idam uvāca ha
65. Then he threw him, whose whole body was stiff and whose eyes were rolled back fiercely, onto the ground and indeed spoke these words.
हिडिम्बबकयोः पाप न त्वमश्रुप्रमार्जनम् ।
करिष्यसि गतश्चासि यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥६६॥
66. hiḍimbabakayoḥ pāpa na tvamaśrupramārjanam ,
kariṣyasi gataścāsi yamasya sadanaṁ prati.
66. hiḍimbabakayoḥ pāpa na tvam aśrupramārjanam
kariṣyasi gataḥ ca asi yamasya sadanam prati
66. O wicked one, you will not wipe away the tears for Hidimba and Baka. Indeed, you have gone to the abode of Yama.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा पुरुषप्रवीरस्तं राक्षसं क्रोधविवृत्तनेत्रः ।
प्रस्रस्तवस्त्राभरणं स्फुरन्तमुद्भ्रान्तचित्तं व्यसुमुत्ससर्ज ॥६७॥
67. ityevamuktvā puruṣapravīra;staṁ rākṣasaṁ krodhavivṛttanetraḥ ,
prasrastavastrābharaṇaṁ sphuranta;mudbhrāntacittaṁ vyasumutsasarja.
67. iti evam uktvā puruṣapravīraḥ tam
rākṣasam krodhavivṛttanetraḥ
prasrastavastrābharaṇam sphurantam
udbhrāntacittam vyasum utsasarja
67. Having thus spoken, that foremost of men (puruṣapravīra), his eyes reddened with anger, let go of the demon, whose clothes and ornaments had fallen off, who was twitching, whose mind was bewildered, and who was breathless (vyasu).
तस्मिन्हते तोयदतुल्यरूपे कृष्णां पुरस्कृत्य नरेन्द्रपुत्राः ।
भीमं प्रशस्याथ गुणैरनेकैर्हृष्टास्ततो द्वैतवनाय जग्मुः ॥६८॥
68. tasminhate toyadatulyarūpe; kṛṣṇāṁ puraskṛtya narendraputrāḥ ,
bhīmaṁ praśasyātha guṇairanekai;rhṛṣṭāstato dvaitavanāya jagmuḥ.
68. tasmin hate toyadatulyarūpe kṛṣṇām
puraskṛtya narendraputrāḥ bhīmam
praśasya atha guṇaiḥ anekaiḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ tataḥ dvaitavanāya jagmuḥ
68. When that one, whose form was like a cloud, was killed, the sons of the king (narendraputrāḥ), placing Draupadi in front, then praised Bhima with many virtues (guṇa), and delighted, they went from there to the Dwaita forest.
एवं विनिहतः संख्ये किर्मीरो मनुजाधिप ।
भीमेन वचनात्तस्य धर्मराजस्य कौरव ॥६९॥
69. evaṁ vinihataḥ saṁkhye kirmīro manujādhipa ,
bhīmena vacanāttasya dharmarājasya kaurava.
69. evaṃ vinihataḥ saṃkhye kīrmīraḥ manujādhipa
bhīmena vacanāt tasya dharmarājasya kaurava
69. O King of men (manujādhipa), O Kuru (kaurava), Kīrmīra was thus killed in battle by Bhīma, by the command of that King of righteousness (dharma-rāja, i.e., Yudhiṣṭhira).
ततो निष्कण्टकं कृत्वा वनं तदपराजितः ।
द्रौपद्या सह धर्मज्ञो वसतिं तामुवास ह ॥७०॥
70. tato niṣkaṇṭakaṁ kṛtvā vanaṁ tadaparājitaḥ ,
draupadyā saha dharmajño vasatiṁ tāmuvāsa ha.
70. tataḥ niṣkaṇṭakaṃ kṛtvā vanaṃ tat aparājitaḥ
draupadyā saha dharmajñaḥ vasatiṃ tām uvāsa ha
70. Then, having made that forest free from obstacles (niṣkaṇṭaka), the unconquered (aparājita) one, who knows the natural law (dharma-jña), truly resided there, in that dwelling, together with Draupadī.
समाश्वास्य च ते सर्वे द्रौपदीं भरतर्षभाः ।
प्रहृष्टमनसः प्रीत्या प्रशशंसुर्वृकोदरम् ॥७१॥
71. samāśvāsya ca te sarve draupadīṁ bharatarṣabhāḥ ,
prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ prītyā praśaśaṁsurvṛkodaram.
71. samāśvāsya ca te sarve draupadīṃ bharatarṣabhāḥ
prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ prītyā praśaśaṃsuḥ vṛkodaram
71. And all of them, the best among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), having consoled Draupadī, praised Vṛkodara (Bhīma) with delighted minds and affection.
भीमबाहुबलोत्पिष्टे विनष्टे राक्षसे ततः ।
विविशुस्तद्वनं वीराः क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम् ॥७२॥
72. bhīmabāhubalotpiṣṭe vinaṣṭe rākṣase tataḥ ,
viviśustadvanaṁ vīrāḥ kṣemaṁ nihatakaṇṭakam.
72. bhīmabāhubalotpiṣṭe vinaṣṭe rākṣase tataḥ
viviśuḥ tat vanaṃ vīrāḥ kṣemaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam
72. Then, when the demon (rākṣasa) had been crushed by the might of Bhīma's arms and destroyed, the heroes (vīra) entered that forest, which was now safe (kṣema) and free from enemies (nihata-kaṇṭaka).
स मया गच्छता मार्गे विनिकीर्णो भयावहः ।
वने महति दुष्टात्मा दृष्टो भीमबलाद्धतः ॥७३॥
73. sa mayā gacchatā mārge vinikīrṇo bhayāvahaḥ ,
vane mahati duṣṭātmā dṛṣṭo bhīmabalāddhataḥ.

73. As I was traveling on the road, I saw that terrifying, wicked-souled (duṣṭātmā) demon, laid low and killed in a great forest by Bhima's strength.
तत्राश्रौषमहं चैतत्कर्म भीमस्य भारत ।
ब्राह्मणानां कथयतां ये तत्रासन्समागताः ॥७४॥
74. tatrāśrauṣamahaṁ caitatkarma bhīmasya bhārata ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ kathayatāṁ ye tatrāsansamāgatāḥ.
74. tatra aśrauṣam aham ca etat karma bhīmasya bhārata
brāhmaṇānām kathayatām ye tatra āsan samāgatāḥ
74. And there, O Bharata, I heard this deed (karma) of Bhima being narrated by the brahmanas who had assembled there.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं विनिहतं संख्ये किर्मीरं राक्षसोत्तमम् ।
श्रुत्वा ध्यानपरो राजा निशश्वासार्तवत्तदा ॥७५॥
75. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ vinihataṁ saṁkhye kirmīraṁ rākṣasottamam ,
śrutvā dhyānaparo rājā niśaśvāsārtavattadā.
75. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam vinihatam saṃkhye kirmīram
rākṣasottamam śrutvā dhyānaparaḥ rājā niśaśvāsa ārtavat tadā
75. Vaisampayana said: When he heard that Kirmira, the foremost of the Rākṣasas, had been thus killed in battle, the king, absorbed in meditation (dhyāna), then sighed sorrowfully.
