ततश्चितां बकपतेः कारयामास राक्षसः ।
रत्नैर्गन्धैश्च बहुभिर्वस्त्रैश्च समलंकृताम् ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: Then, the demon arranged for a pyre to be made for Baka, the lord of the cranes, which was adorned with many jewels, fragrances, and garments.
तत्र प्रज्वाल्य नृपते बकराजं प्रतापवान् ।
प्रेतकार्याणि विधिवद्राक्षसेन्द्रश्चकार ह ॥२॥
2. tatra prajvālya nṛpate bakarājaṁ pratāpavān ,
pretakāryāṇi vidhivadrākṣasendraścakāra ha.

2. There, O king, that mighty chief of demons (rākṣasendra) ignited the pyre of King Baka and properly performed the funeral rites.
तस्मिन्कालेऽथ सुरभिर्देवी दाक्षायणी शुभा ।
उपरिष्टात्ततस्तस्य सा बभूव पयस्विनी ॥३॥
3. tasminkāle'tha surabhirdevī dākṣāyaṇī śubhā ,
upariṣṭāttatastasya sā babhūva payasvinī.
3. tasmin kāle atha surabhiḥ devī dākṣāyaṇī śubhā
upariṣṭāt tataḥ tasya sā babhūva payasvinī
3. tasmin kāle atha śubhā devī surabhiḥ dākṣāyaṇī
tataḥ tasya upariṣṭāt sā payasvinī babhūva
3. At that time, the auspicious goddess Surabhi, the daughter of Daksha (Dākṣāyaṇī), appeared above him, yielding milk.
तस्या वक्त्राच्च्युतः फेनः क्षीरमिश्रस्तदानघ ।
सोऽपतद्वै ततस्तस्यां चितायां राजधर्मणः ॥४॥
4. tasyā vaktrāccyutaḥ phenaḥ kṣīramiśrastadānagha ,
so'patadvai tatastasyāṁ citāyāṁ rājadharmaṇaḥ.
4. tasyāḥ vaktrāt cyutaḥ phenaḥ kṣīra-miśraḥ tadā anagha
saḥ apatat vai tataḥ tasyām citāyām rājadharmaṇaḥ
4. anagha tadā tasyāḥ vaktrāt kṣīra-miśraḥ cyutaḥ phenaḥ
saḥ vai tataḥ rājadharmaṇaḥ tasyām citāyām apatat
4. O sinless one, then the foam, mixed with milk, which had fallen from her mouth, indeed landed upon that funeral pyre of King Rajadharman.
ततः संजीवितस्तेन बकराजस्तदानघ ।
उत्पत्य च समेयाय विरूपाक्षं बकाधिपः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ saṁjīvitastena bakarājastadānagha ,
utpatya ca sameyāya virūpākṣaṁ bakādhipaḥ.
5. tataḥ saṃjīvitaḥ tena baka-rājaḥ tadā anagha
utpatya ca sameyāya virūpākṣam baka-adhipaḥ
5. anagha tadā tena baka-rājaḥ saṃjīvitaḥ ca
utpatya baka-adhipaḥ virūpākṣam sameyāya
5. O sinless one, then the king of cranes was brought back to life by that (foam). And having sprung up, the lord of cranes went to meet Virupaksha.
ततोऽभ्ययाद्देवराजो विरूपाक्षपुरं तदा ।
प्राह चेदं विरूपाक्षं दिष्ट्यायं जीवतीत्युत ॥६॥
6. tato'bhyayāddevarājo virūpākṣapuraṁ tadā ,
prāha cedaṁ virūpākṣaṁ diṣṭyāyaṁ jīvatītyuta.
6. tataḥ abhyayāt deva-rājaḥ virūpākṣa-puram tadā
prāha ca idam virūpākṣam diṣṭyā ayam jīvati iti uta
6. tataḥ tadā deva-rājaḥ virūpākṣa-puram abhyayāt ca
virūpākṣam idam prāha "diṣṭyā ayam jīvati iti" uta
6. Then, at that time, Indra, the king of the gods, approached Virupaksha's city. And he said this to Virupaksha: 'Fortunately, this one (the crane king) lives!'
श्रावयामास चेन्द्रस्तं विरूपाक्षं पुरातनम् ।
यथा शापः पुरा दत्तो ब्रह्मणा राजधर्मणः ॥७॥
7. śrāvayāmāsa cendrastaṁ virūpākṣaṁ purātanam ,
yathā śāpaḥ purā datto brahmaṇā rājadharmaṇaḥ.
7. śrāvayāmāsa ca indraḥ tam virūpākṣam purātanam
yathā śāpaḥ purā dattaḥ brahmaṇā rājadharmaṇaḥ
7. ca indraḥ tam purātanam virūpākṣam yathā purā
śāpaḥ brahmaṇā rājadharmaṇaḥ dattaḥ śrāvayāmāsa
7. And Indra recounted to that ancient Virupaksha how the curse had been previously given by Brahmā to King Rajadharman.
यदा बकपती राजन्ब्रह्माणं नोपसर्पति ।
ततो रोषादिदं प्राह बकेन्द्राय पितामहः ॥८॥
8. yadā bakapatī rājanbrahmāṇaṁ nopasarpati ,
tato roṣādidaṁ prāha bakendrāya pitāmahaḥ.
8. yadā bakapatī rājan brahmāṇam na upasarpati
tataḥ roṣāt idam prāha bakendrāya pitāmahaḥ
8. rājan yadā bakapatī brahmāṇam na upasarpati
tataḥ pitāmahaḥ roṣāt idam bakendrāya prāha
8. O King, when the lord of cranes (Bakapati) did not approach Brahmā, then the Grandfather (Brahmā) angrily said this to the lord of cranes (Bakendra).
यस्मान्मूढो मम सदो नागतोऽसौ बकाधमः ।
तस्माद्वधं स दुष्टात्मा नचिरात्समवाप्स्यति ॥९॥
9. yasmānmūḍho mama sado nāgato'sau bakādhamaḥ ,
tasmādvadhaṁ sa duṣṭātmā nacirātsamavāpsyati.
9. yasmāt mūḍhaḥ mama sadaḥ na āgataḥ asau bakādhamaḥ
tasmāt vadham sa duṣṭātmā nacirāt samavāpsyati
9. yasmāt asau mūḍhaḥ duṣṭātmā bakādhamaḥ mama sadaḥ
na āgataḥ tasmāt sa nacirāt vadham samavāpsyati
9. Because that foolish, wicked-souled (duṣṭātmā) wretched crane (Bakādhama) did not come to my assembly, he shall therefore soon meet his death.
तदायं तस्य वचनान्निहतो गौतमेन वै ।
तेनैवामृतसिक्तश्च पुनः संजीवितो बकः ॥१०॥
10. tadāyaṁ tasya vacanānnihato gautamena vai ,
tenaivāmṛtasiktaśca punaḥ saṁjīvito bakaḥ.
10. tadā ayam tasya vacanāt nihataḥ gautamena vai
tena eva amṛtasiktaḥ ca punaḥ saṃjīvitaḥ bakaḥ
10. tadā ayam tasya vacanāt gautamena vai nihataḥ
ca tena eva amṛtasiktaḥ punaḥ bakaḥ saṃjīvitaḥ
10. Then, by his (Brahmā's) command, this (crane) was indeed killed by Gautama. And then, the crane was revived again, sprinkled with ambrosia (amṛta) by that very (Gautama).
राजधर्मा ततः प्राह प्रणिपत्य पुरंदरम् ।
यदि तेऽनुग्रहकृता मयि बुद्धिः पुरंदर ।
सखायं मे सुदयितं गौतमं जीवयेत्युत ॥११॥
11. rājadharmā tataḥ prāha praṇipatya puraṁdaram ,
yadi te'nugrahakṛtā mayi buddhiḥ puraṁdara ,
sakhāyaṁ me sudayitaṁ gautamaṁ jīvayetyuta.
11. rājadharmā tataḥ prāha praṇipatya
purandaram yadi te anugrahakṛtā
mayi buddhiḥ purandara sakhāyam me
sudayitam gautamam jīvaya iti uta
11. tataḥ rājadharmā purandaram praṇipatya
prāha purandara yadi te mayi
buddhiḥ anugrahakṛtā me sudayitam
sakhāyam gautamam jīvaya iti uta
11. Then, Rajadharma, having bowed down to Purandara (Indra), spoke, "O Purandara (Indra), if your mind (buddhi) is favorably disposed towards me, then please revive my very dear friend, Gautama!"
तस्य वाक्यं समाज्ञाय वासवः पुरुषर्षभ ।
संजीवयित्वा सख्ये वै प्रादात्तं गौतमं तदा ॥१२॥
12. tasya vākyaṁ samājñāya vāsavaḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
saṁjīvayitvā sakhye vai prādāttaṁ gautamaṁ tadā.
12. tasya vākyam samājñāya vāsavaḥ puruṣarṣabha
saṃjīvayitvā sakhye vai prādāt tam gautamam tadā
12. puruṣarṣabha tasya vākyam samājñāya vāsavaḥ tadā
saṃjīvayitvā tam gautamam vai sakhye prādāt
12. O best among men, having fully understood his words, Indra then revived that Gautama and indeed restored him to his friend.
सभाण्डोपस्करं राजंस्तमासाद्य बकाधिपः ।
संपरिष्वज्य सुहृदं प्रीत्या परमया युतः ॥१३॥
13. sabhāṇḍopaskaraṁ rājaṁstamāsādya bakādhipaḥ ,
saṁpariṣvajya suhṛdaṁ prītyā paramayā yutaḥ.
13. sabhāṇḍopaskaram rājan tam āsādya bakādhipaḥ
sampariṣvajya suhṛdam prītyā paramayā yutaḥ
13. rājan bakādhipaḥ sabhāṇḍopaskaram tam āsādya
paramayā prītyā yutaḥ suhṛdam sampariṣvajya
13. O King, having approached him along with all his utensils and equipment, Baka, the chief of the cranes, embraced his friend, filled with supreme affection.
अथ तं पापकर्माणं राजधर्मा बकाधिपः ।
विसर्जयित्वा सधनं प्रविवेश स्वमालयम् ॥१४॥
14. atha taṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ rājadharmā bakādhipaḥ ,
visarjayitvā sadhanaṁ praviveśa svamālayam.
14. atha tam pāpakarmāṇam rājadharmā bakādhipaḥ
visarjayitvā sadhanam praviveśa svam ālayam
14. atha bakādhipaḥ rājadharmā tam pāpakarmāṇam
sadhanam visarjayitvā svam ālayam praviveśa
14. Then, Baka, the chief of the cranes, upholding kingly natural law (dharma), having dismissed that evil-doer along with his wealth, entered his own abode.
यथोचितं च स बको ययौ ब्रह्मसदस्तदा ।
ब्रह्मा च तं महात्मानमातिथ्येनाभ्यपूजयत् ॥१५॥
15. yathocitaṁ ca sa bako yayau brahmasadastadā ,
brahmā ca taṁ mahātmānamātithyenābhyapūjayat.
15. yathocitam ca saḥ bakaḥ yayau brahmasadaḥ tadā
brahmā ca tam mahātmānam ātithyena abhyapūjayat
15. ca tadā yathocitam saḥ bakaḥ brahmasadaḥ yayau
ca brahmā tam mahātmānam ātithyena abhyapūjayat
15. And then, as was appropriate, that Baka went to the assembly of Brahmā; and Brahmā, in turn, honored that great-souled one with hospitality.
गौतमश्चापि संप्राप्य पुनस्तं शबरालयम् ।
शूद्रायां जनयामास पुत्रान्दुष्कृतकारिणः ॥१६॥
16. gautamaścāpi saṁprāpya punastaṁ śabarālayam ,
śūdrāyāṁ janayāmāsa putrānduṣkṛtakāriṇaḥ.
16. gautamaḥ ca api samprāpya punaḥ tam śabarālayam
śūdrāyām janayāmāsa putrān duṣkṛtakāriṇaḥ
16. gautamaḥ api tam śabarālayam punaḥ samprāpya
śūdrāyām duṣkṛtakāriṇaḥ putrān janayāmāsa
16. Gautama, having returned to that dwelling of the Śabaras, also begot sons who committed wicked deeds with a Śūdra woman.
शापश्च सुमहांस्तस्य दत्तः सुरगणैस्तदा ।
कुक्षौ पुनर्भ्वां भार्यायां जनयित्वा चिरात्सुतान् ।
निरयं प्राप्स्यति महत्कृतघ्नोऽयमिति प्रभो ॥१७॥
17. śāpaśca sumahāṁstasya dattaḥ suragaṇaistadā ,
kukṣau punarbhvāṁ bhāryāyāṁ janayitvā cirātsutān ,
nirayaṁ prāpsyati mahatkṛtaghno'yamiti prabho.
17. śāpaḥ ca sumahān tasya dattaḥ suragaṇaiḥ
tadā kukṣau punarbhvām bhāryāyām
janayitvā cirāt sutān nirayam
prāpsyati mahat kṛtaghnaḥ ayam iti prabho
17. prabho tadā suragaṇaiḥ sumahān śāpaḥ
ca tasya dattaḥ punarbhvām bhāryāyām
kukṣau cirāt sutān janayitvā ayam
kṛtaghnaḥ mahat nirayam prāpsyati iti
17. O Lord, a very great curse was then pronounced upon him by the hosts of gods, saying: "Having begotten sons in the womb of his reborn wife after a long time, this ungrateful one (kṛtaghna) will attain a terrible hell."
एतत्प्राह पुरा सर्वं नारदो मम भारत ।
संस्मृत्य चापि सुमहदाख्यानं पुरुषर्षभ ।
मयापि भवते सर्वं यथावदुपवर्णितम् ॥१८॥
18. etatprāha purā sarvaṁ nārado mama bhārata ,
saṁsmṛtya cāpi sumahadākhyānaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
mayāpi bhavate sarvaṁ yathāvadupavarṇitam.
18. etat prāha purā sarvam nāradaḥ mama
bhārata saṃsmṛtya ca api sumahat
ākhyānam puruṣarṣabha mayā api
bhavate sarvam yathāvat upavarṇitam
18. bhārata nāradaḥ purā etat sarvam
mama prāha ca api puruṣarṣabha
sumahat ākhyānam saṃsmṛtya mayā api
sarvam yathāvat bhavate upavarṇitam
18. O Bhārata, Narada previously narrated all this to me. And, O best of men, having recalled that very great narrative, I have also recounted it all to you exactly as it occurred.
कुतः कृतघ्नस्य यशः कुतः स्थानं कुतः सुखम् ।
अश्रद्धेयः कृतघ्नो हि कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥१९॥
19. kutaḥ kṛtaghnasya yaśaḥ kutaḥ sthānaṁ kutaḥ sukham ,
aśraddheyaḥ kṛtaghno hi kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ.
19. kutaḥ kṛtaghnasya yaśaḥ kutaḥ sthānam kutaḥ sukham
aśraddheyaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ hi kṛtaghne na asti niṣkṛtiḥ
19. kṛtaghnasya yaśaḥ kutaḥ sthānam kutaḥ sukham kutaḥ
hi kṛtaghnaḥ aśraddheyaḥ kṛtaghne niṣkṛtiḥ na asti
19. For an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna), how can there be fame, or status, or happiness? Indeed, an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna) is untrustworthy, and there is no atonement (niṣkṛti) for an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna).
मित्रद्रोहो न कर्तव्यः पुरुषेण विशेषतः ।
मित्रध्रुङ्निरयं घोरमनन्तं प्रतिपद्यते ॥२०॥
20. mitradroho na kartavyaḥ puruṣeṇa viśeṣataḥ ,
mitradhruṅnirayaṁ ghoramanantaṁ pratipadyate.
20. mitradrohaḥ na kartavyaḥ puruṣeṇa viśeṣataḥ |
mitradhruk nirayam ghoram anantam pratipadyate
20. puruṣeṇa mitradrohaḥ na viśeṣataḥ kartavyaḥ
mitradhruk ghoram anantam nirayam pratipadyate
20. Betrayal of a friend should never be committed by a person, especially. One who betrays a friend will attain a dreadful, endless hell.
कृतज्ञेन सदा भाव्यं मित्रकामेन चानघ ।
मित्रात्प्रभवते सत्यं मित्रात्प्रभवते बलम् ।
सत्कारैरुत्तमैर्मित्रं पूजयेत विचक्षणः ॥२१॥
21. kṛtajñena sadā bhāvyaṁ mitrakāmena cānagha ,
mitrātprabhavate satyaṁ mitrātprabhavate balam ,
satkārairuttamairmitraṁ pūjayeta vicakṣaṇaḥ.
21. kṛtajñena sadā bhāvyaṃ mitrakāmena
ca anagha | mitrāt prabhavate satyam
mitrāt prabhavate balam | satkāraiḥ
uttamaiḥ mitram pūjayeta vicakṣaṇaḥ
21. anagha kṛtajñena ca mitrakāmena sadā
bhāvyaṃ mitrāt satyam prabhavate
mitrāt balam prabhavate vicakṣaṇaḥ
uttamaiḥ satkāraiḥ mitram pūjayeta
21. O sinless one (anagha), one should always be grateful and desirous of friends. Truth (satya) arises from friendship, and strength arises from friendship. A discerning person should honor a friend with excellent hospitality.
परित्याज्यो बुधैः पापः कृतघ्नो निरपत्रपः ।
मित्रद्रोही कुलाङ्गारः पापकर्मा नराधमः ॥२२॥
22. parityājyo budhaiḥ pāpaḥ kṛtaghno nirapatrapaḥ ,
mitradrohī kulāṅgāraḥ pāpakarmā narādhamaḥ.
22. parityājyaḥ budhaiḥ pāpaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ nirapatrapaḥ
| mitradrohī kulāṅgāraḥ pāpakarmā narādhamaḥ
22. budhaiḥ pāpaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ nirapatrapaḥ mitradrohī
kulāṅgāraḥ pāpakarmā narādhamaḥ parityājyaḥ
22. The wise should abandon a sinful, ungrateful, and shameless person, as well as one who betrays a friend, disgraces their family, commits evil (karma), and is the lowest among men.
एष धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठ प्रोक्तः पापो मया तव ।
मित्रद्रोही कृतघ्नो वै किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥२३॥
23. eṣa dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭha proktaḥ pāpo mayā tava ,
mitradrohī kṛtaghno vai kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi.
23. eṣaḥ dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭha proktaḥ pāpaḥ mayā tava |
mitradrohī kṛtaghnaḥ vai kim bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi
23. eṣaḥ dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭha mayā tava pāpaḥ mitradrohī
kṛtaghnaḥ vai proktaḥ kim bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi
23. O best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), I have indeed declared this sinful one - the betrayer of friends, the ungrateful - to you. What more do you wish to hear?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तदा वाक्यं भीष्मेणोक्तं महात्मना ।
युधिष्ठिरः प्रीतमना बभूव जनमेजय ॥२४॥
24. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā tadā vākyaṁ bhīṣmeṇoktaṁ mahātmanā ,
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prītamanā babhūva janamejaya.
24. vaiśampāyana uvāca etat śrutvā tadā vākyam bhīṣmeṇa
uktam mahātmanā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prītamanā babhūva janamejaya
24. janamejaya vaiśampāyana uvāca bhīṣmeṇa mahātmanā uktam
etat vākyam tadā śrutvā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prītamanā babhūva
24. Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya, upon hearing this statement spoken by the great-souled (mahātman) Bhīṣma, Yudhiṣṭhira's mind became pleased.
