ब्राह्मण्युवाच ।
नाहं गृह्णामि वस्तात दृष्टीर्नास्ति रुषान्विता ।
अयं तु भार्गवो नूनमूरुजः कुपितोऽद्य वः ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇyuvāca ,
nāhaṁ gṛhṇāmi vastāta dṛṣṭīrnāsti ruṣānvitā ,
ayaṁ tu bhārgavo nūnamūrujaḥ kupito'dya vaḥ.
1. brāhmaṇī uvāca na aham gṛhṇāmi vas tāta dṛṣṭīḥ na asti
ruṣānvitā ayam tu bhārgavaḥ nūnam ūrujaḥ kupitaḥ adya vaḥ
1. The brahmin lady said, "Dear ones, I am not angry, and I am not the one who took your sight. But this Bhārgava, surely, the one born from the thigh, is enraged with you today."
तेन चक्षूंषि वस्तात नूनं कोपान्महात्मना ।
स्मरता निहतान्बन्धूनादत्तानि न संशयः ॥२॥
2. tena cakṣūṁṣi vastāta nūnaṁ kopānmahātmanā ,
smaratā nihatānbandhūnādattāni na saṁśayaḥ.
2. tena cakṣūṃṣi vaḥ tāta nūnam kopāt mahātmanā
smaratā nihatān bandhūn ādattāni na saṃśayaḥ
2. O dear ones, undoubtedly, that great-souled one (Aurva), remembering his slain kinsmen, has blinded you all out of anger.
गर्भानपि यदा यूयं भृगूणां घ्नत पुत्रकाः ।
तदायमूरुणा गर्भो मया वर्षशतं धृतः ॥३॥
3. garbhānapi yadā yūyaṁ bhṛgūṇāṁ ghnata putrakāḥ ,
tadāyamūruṇā garbho mayā varṣaśataṁ dhṛtaḥ.
3. garbhān api yadā yūyam bhṛgūṇām ghnata putrakāḥ
tadā ayam ūruṇā garbhaḥ mayā varṣaśatam dhṛtaḥ
3. O children, when you killed even the unborn children of the Bhṛgus, then this fetus was carried by me in my thigh for a hundred years.
षडङ्गश्चाखिलो वेद इमं गर्भस्थमेव हि ।
विवेश भृगुवंशस्य भूयः प्रियचिकीर्षया ॥४॥
4. ṣaḍaṅgaścākhilo veda imaṁ garbhasthameva hi ,
viveśa bhṛguvaṁśasya bhūyaḥ priyacikīrṣayā.
4. ṣaḍaṅgaḥ ca akhilaḥ vedaḥ imam garbhastham eva
hi viveśa bhṛguvaṃśasya bhūyaḥ priyacikīrṣayā
4. And indeed, the entire Veda, along with its six ancillary branches (Vedāṅgas), entered this one (Aurva) while he was still in the womb, desiring to again benefit the Bhṛgu lineage.
सोऽयं पितृवधान्नूनं क्रोधाद्वो हन्तुमिच्छति ।
तेजसा यस्य दिव्येन चक्षूंषि मुषितानि वः ॥५॥
5. so'yaṁ pitṛvadhānnūnaṁ krodhādvo hantumicchati ,
tejasā yasya divyena cakṣūṁṣi muṣitāni vaḥ.
5. saḥ ayam pitṛvadhāt nūnam krodhāt vaḥ hantum
icchati tejasā yasya divyena cakṣūṃṣi muṣitāni vaḥ
5. Indeed, this one (Aurva) certainly desires to kill you out of anger over the killing of his ancestors, and it is by his divine radiance that your eyes have been taken away.
तमिमं तात याचध्वमौर्वं मम सुतोत्तमम् ।
अयं वः प्रणिपातेन तुष्टो दृष्टीर्विमोक्ष्यति ॥६॥
6. tamimaṁ tāta yācadhvamaurvaṁ mama sutottamam ,
ayaṁ vaḥ praṇipātena tuṣṭo dṛṣṭīrvimokṣyati.
6. tam imam tāta yācadhvam aurvam mama sutottamam
ayam vaḥ praṇipātena tuṣṭaḥ dṛṣṭīḥ vimokṣyati
6. Therefore, O dear ones, implore this Aurva, my best son. He, being pleased by your prostration, will restore your eyesight.
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
एवमुक्तास्ततः सर्वे राजानस्ते तमूरुजम् ।
ऊचुः प्रसीदेति तदा प्रसादं च चकार सः ॥७॥
7. gandharva uvāca ,
evamuktāstataḥ sarve rājānaste tamūrujam ,
ūcuḥ prasīdeti tadā prasādaṁ ca cakāra saḥ.
7. gandharva uvāca evam uktāḥ tataḥ sarve rājānaḥ te tam
ūrujam ūcuḥ prasīda iti tadā prasādam ca cakāra saḥ
7. The Gandharva said: "When all those kings were thus addressed, they then said to that son of Ūru, 'Be pleased!' And he granted his grace (prasāda)."
अनेनैव च विख्यातो नाम्ना लोकेषु सत्तमः ।
स और्व इति विप्रर्षिरूरुं भित्त्वा व्यजायत ॥८॥
8. anenaiva ca vikhyāto nāmnā lokeṣu sattamaḥ ,
sa aurva iti viprarṣirūruṁ bhittvā vyajāyata.
8. anena eva ca vikhyātaḥ nāmnā lokeṣu sattamaḥ
saḥ aurva iti viprarṣiḥ ūrum bhittvā vyajāyata
8. And by this very act, he became well-known by the name "Aurva" among excellent people in the worlds. That sage (viprarṣi), having split the thigh, was born.
चक्षूंषि प्रतिलभ्याथ प्रतिजग्मुस्ततो नृपाः ।
भार्गवस्तु मुनिर्मेने सर्वलोकपराभवम् ॥९॥
9. cakṣūṁṣi pratilabhyātha pratijagmustato nṛpāḥ ,
bhārgavastu munirmene sarvalokaparābhavam.
9. cakṣūṃṣi pratilabhyā atha pratijagmuḥ tataḥ
nṛpāḥ bhārgavaḥ tu muniḥ mene sarvalokaparābhavam
9. Then, having regained their eyes, the kings returned from there. But the sage Bhārgava considered this a humiliation for all the worlds.
स चक्रे तात लोकानां विनाशाय महामनाः ।
सर्वेषामेव कार्त्स्न्येन मनः प्रवणमात्मनः ॥१०॥
10. sa cakre tāta lokānāṁ vināśāya mahāmanāḥ ,
sarveṣāmeva kārtsnyena manaḥ pravaṇamātmanaḥ.
10. saḥ cakre tāta lokānām vināśāya mahāmanāḥ
sarveṣām eva kārtsnyena manaḥ pravaṇam ātmanaḥ
10. He, my dear, that great-minded one, resolved to destroy all the worlds. His own mind (ātman) was completely inclined towards the ruin of all beings.
इच्छन्नपचितिं कर्तुं भृगूणां भृगुसत्तमः ।
सर्वलोकविनाशाय तपसा महतैधितः ॥११॥
11. icchannapacitiṁ kartuṁ bhṛgūṇāṁ bhṛgusattamaḥ ,
sarvalokavināśāya tapasā mahataidhitaḥ.
11. icchan apacitim kartum bhṛgūṇām bhṛgusattamaḥ
sarvalokavināśāya tapasā mahatā edhitaḥ
11. Desiring to inflict revenge for the Bhṛgus, that best of Bhṛgus (Aurva), was empowered by his great austerity (tapas) for the destruction of all worlds.
तापयामास लोकान्स सदेवासुरमानुषान् ।
तपसोग्रेण महता नन्दयिष्यन्पितामहान् ॥१२॥
12. tāpayāmāsa lokānsa sadevāsuramānuṣān ,
tapasogreṇa mahatā nandayiṣyanpitāmahān.
12. tāpayāmāsa lokān sadevasuramanuṣān tapasā
ugreṇa mahatā nandayisyann pitāmahān
12. He tormented the worlds—including gods, asuras, and humans—with his fierce and great penance (tapas), intending to gladden his ancestors.
ततस्तं पितरस्तात विज्ञाय भृगुसत्तमम् ।
पितृलोकादुपागम्य सर्व ऊचुरिदं वचः ॥१३॥
13. tatastaṁ pitarastāta vijñāya bhṛgusattamam ,
pitṛlokādupāgamya sarva ūcuridaṁ vacaḥ.
13. tatas tam pitaraḥ tāta vijñāya bhṛgusattamam
pitṛlokāt upāgamya sarve ūcuḥ idam vacaḥ
13. Then, dear son (tāta), having recognized him as the best among the Bhrigus, all the ancestors, coming from the world of ancestors (pitṛloka), spoke these words.
और्व दृष्टः प्रभावस्ते तपसोग्रस्य पुत्रक ।
प्रसादं कुरु लोकानां नियच्छ क्रोधमात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. aurva dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvaste tapasograsya putraka ,
prasādaṁ kuru lokānāṁ niyaccha krodhamātmanaḥ.
14. aurva dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvaḥ te tapasaḥ ugrasyā putraka
prasādam kuru lokānām niyaccha krodham ātmanaḥ
14. O Aurva, dear son (putraka), the power (prabhāva) of your fierce penance (tapas) has been witnessed. Please bestow your grace upon the worlds and control your anger (ātman).
नानीशैर्हि तदा तात भृगुभिर्भावितात्मभिः ।
वधोऽभ्युपेक्षितः सर्वैः क्षत्रियाणां विहिंसताम् ॥१५॥
15. nānīśairhi tadā tāta bhṛgubhirbhāvitātmabhiḥ ,
vadho'bhyupekṣitaḥ sarvaiḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ vihiṁsatām.
15. na anīśaiḥ hi tadā tāta bhṛgubhiḥ bhāvitātmabhiḥ
vadhaḥ abhyupekṣitaḥ sarvaiḥ kṣatriyāṇām vihiṃsatām
15. Indeed, dear son (tāta), at that time, the slaughter of the violent Kṣatriyas was tolerated by all the Bhrigus, whose selves (ātman) were purified, not by those who were powerless.
आयुषा हि प्रकृष्टेन यदा नः खेद आविशत् ।
तदास्माभिर्वधस्तात क्षत्रियैरीप्सितः स्वयम् ॥१६॥
16. āyuṣā hi prakṛṣṭena yadā naḥ kheda āviśat ,
tadāsmābhirvadhastāta kṣatriyairīpsitaḥ svayam.
16. āyuṣā hi prakṛṣṭena yadā naḥ khedaḥ āviśat tadā
asmābhiḥ vadhaḥ tāta kṣatriyaiḥ īpsitaḥ svayam
16. Indeed, dear son (tāta), when weariness overcame us due to a very prolonged lifespan, then we ourselves desired slaughter by the Kṣatriyas.
निखातं तद्धि वै वित्तं केनचिद्भृगुवेश्मनि ।
वैरायैव तदा न्यस्तं क्षत्रियान्कोपयिष्णुभिः ।
किं हि वित्तेन नः कार्यं स्वर्गेप्सूनां द्विजर्षभ ॥१७॥
17. nikhātaṁ taddhi vai vittaṁ kenacidbhṛguveśmani ,
vairāyaiva tadā nyastaṁ kṣatriyānkopayiṣṇubhiḥ ,
kiṁ hi vittena naḥ kāryaṁ svargepsūnāṁ dvijarṣabha.
17. nikhātam tat hi vai vittam kenacit
bhṛguveśmani vairāya eva tadā nyastam
kṣatriyān kopayiṣṇubhiḥ kim hi vittena
naḥ kāryam svargepsūnām dvijarṣabha
17. Indeed, that wealth was buried by someone in Bhrigu's house. It was deposited there at that time solely to create enmity by those who aimed to provoke the kshatriyas. O best among brahmins, what purpose does wealth serve for us, who aspire to heaven?
यदा तु मृत्युरादातुं न नः शक्नोति सर्वशः ।
तदास्माभिरयं दृष्ट उपायस्तात संमतः ॥१८॥
18. yadā tu mṛtyurādātuṁ na naḥ śaknoti sarvaśaḥ ,
tadāsmābhirayaṁ dṛṣṭa upāyastāta saṁmataḥ.
18. yadā tu mṛtyuḥ ādātum na naḥ śaknoti sarvaśaḥ
tadā asmābhiḥ ayam dṛṣṭaḥ upāyaḥ tāta saṃmataḥ
18. But when death is utterly unable to seize us, then, dear one, this solution (upāya) has been found and approved by us.
आत्महा च पुमांस्तात न लोकाँल्लभते शुभान् ।
ततोऽस्माभिः समीक्ष्यैवं नात्मनात्मा विनाशितः ॥१९॥
19. ātmahā ca pumāṁstāta na lokāँllabhate śubhān ,
tato'smābhiḥ samīkṣyaivaṁ nātmanātmā vināśitaḥ.
19. ātmahā ca pumān tāta na lokān labhate śubhān tataḥ
asmābhiḥ samīkṣya evam na ātmanā ātmā vināśitaḥ
19. And indeed, dear one, a man who commits suicide (ātmahā) does not attain auspicious realms. Therefore, having carefully considered this, the self (ātman) was not destroyed by our own hand (ātmanā).
न चैतन्नः प्रियं तात यदिदं कर्तुमिच्छसि ।
नियच्छेदं मनः पापात्सर्वलोकपराभवात् ॥२०॥
20. na caitannaḥ priyaṁ tāta yadidaṁ kartumicchasi ,
niyacchedaṁ manaḥ pāpātsarvalokaparābhavāt.
20. na ca etat naḥ priyam tāta yat idam kartum icchasi
niyaccha idam manaḥ pāpāt sarvalokaparābhavāt
20. And dear one, this action you wish to perform is not pleasing to us. Restrain this mind from sin and from the humiliation of all beings.
न हि नः क्षत्रियाः केचिन्न लोकाः सप्त पुत्रक ।
दूषयन्ति तपस्तेजः क्रोधमुत्पतितं जहि ॥२१॥
21. na hi naḥ kṣatriyāḥ kecinna lokāḥ sapta putraka ,
dūṣayanti tapastejaḥ krodhamutpatitaṁ jahi.
21. na hi naḥ kṣatriyāḥ kecit na lokāḥ sapta putraka
dūṣayanti tapastejaḥ krodham utpatitam jahi
21. Indeed, O son, neither any kshatriyas nor the seven worlds can diminish our spiritual power (tapas). (But anger itself) pollutes spiritual power (tapas). Therefore, conquer this surging anger!
