तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे सौभद्रे रथयूथपे ।
विमुक्तरथसंनाहाः सर्वे निक्षिप्तकार्मुकाः ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: But when that valiant leader of charioteers, Abhimanyu (Saubhadra), was killed, all of them, having abandoned their chariots and armor, and having cast aside their bows,
उपोपविष्टा राजानं परिवार्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।
तदेव दुःखं ध्यायन्तः सौभद्रगतमानसाः ॥२॥
2. upopaviṣṭā rājānaṁ parivārya yudhiṣṭhiram ,
tadeva duḥkhaṁ dhyāyantaḥ saubhadragatamānasāḥ.
2. upopaviṣṭāḥ rājānam parivārya yudhiṣṭhiram |
tat eva duḥkham dhyāyantaḥ saubhadragatamānasāḥ

2. they sat down surrounding King Yudhishthira, their minds fixed on (grief for) Abhimanyu (Saubhadra), contemplating that very sorrow.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा विललाप सुदुःखितः ।
अभिमन्यौ हते वीरे भ्रातुः पुत्रे महारथे ॥३॥
3. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ ,
abhimanyau hate vīre bhrātuḥ putre mahārathe.

3. Then King Yudhishthira, greatly distressed, lamented when the valiant Abhimanyu (Abhimanyu), the son of his brother and a great charioteer, was killed.
द्रोणानीकमसंबाधं मम प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
भित्त्वा व्यूहं प्रविष्टोऽसौ गोमध्यमिव केसरी ॥४॥
4. droṇānīkamasaṁbādhaṁ mama priyacikīrṣayā ,
bhittvā vyūhaṁ praviṣṭo'sau gomadhyamiva kesarī.

4. asau mama priyacikīrṣayā asaṃbādham droṇānīkam vyūham bhittvā,

4. He (Abhimanyu) entered the Drona army formation (vyūha), which was impassable, desiring to do what was dear to me, just like a lion entering a herd of cows after breaking through (their ranks).
यस्य शूरा महेष्वासाः प्रत्यनीकगता रणे ।
प्रभग्ना विनिवर्तन्ते कृतास्त्रा युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥५॥
5. yasya śūrā maheṣvāsāḥ pratyanīkagatā raṇe ,
prabhagnā vinivartante kṛtāstrā yuddhadurmadāḥ.

5. Whose mighty archer warriors, skilled in weaponry and formidable in battle, were routed and retreated when they faced him on the battlefield.
अत्यन्तशत्रुरस्माकं येन दुःशासनः शरैः ।
क्षिप्रं ह्यभिमुखः संक्ये विसंज्ञो विमुखीकृतः ॥६॥
6. atyantaśatrurasmākaṁ yena duḥśāsanaḥ śaraiḥ ,
kṣipraṁ hyabhimukhaḥ saṁkye visaṁjño vimukhīkṛtaḥ.
6. atyantaśatruḥ asmākam yena duḥśāsanaḥ śaraiḥ
kṣipram hi abhimukhaḥ saṅkhye visamjñaḥ vimukhīkṛtaḥ
6. yena asmākam atyantaśatruḥ duḥśāsanaḥ abhimukhaḥ
saṅkhye śaraiḥ kṣipram hi visaṃjñaḥ vimukhīkṛtaḥ
6. He by whom Duḥśāsana, our greatest enemy, was swiftly struck senseless by arrows while confronting him in battle and made to turn away.
स तीर्त्वा दुस्तरं वीरो द्रोणानीकमहार्णवम् ।
प्राप्य दौःशासनिं कार्ष्णिर्यातो वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥७॥
7. sa tīrtvā dustaraṁ vīro droṇānīkamahārṇavam ,
prāpya dauḥśāsaniṁ kārṣṇiryāto vaivasvatakṣayam.
7. saḥ tīrtvā dustaram vīraḥ droṇānīkamahārṇavam
prāpya dauḥśāsanim kārṣṇiḥ yātaḥ vaivasvatakṣayam
7. saḥ vīraḥ kārṣṇiḥ droṇānīkamahārṇavam dustaram
tīrtvā dauḥśāsanim prāpya vaivasvatakṣayam yātaḥ
7. That hero, the descendant of Kṛṣṇa, having crossed the formidable great ocean of Droṇa's army and having reached Duḥśāsana's son (Dauḥśāsani), has gone to the abode of Yama (vaivasvatakṣayam).
कथं द्रक्ष्यामि कौन्तेयं सौभद्रे निहतेऽर्जुनम् ।
सुभद्रां वा महाभागां प्रियं पुत्रमपश्यतीम् ॥८॥
8. kathaṁ drakṣyāmi kaunteyaṁ saubhadre nihate'rjunam ,
subhadrāṁ vā mahābhāgāṁ priyaṁ putramapaśyatīm.
8. katham drakṣyāmi kaunteyam saubhadre nihate arjunam
subhadrām vā mahābhāgām priyam putram apaśyatīm
8. katham saubhadre nihate kaunteyam arjunam drakṣyāmi? vā
mahābhāgām priyam putram apaśyatīm subhadrām (drakṣyāmi)?
8. How shall I behold Arjuna, the son of Kuntī, with the son of Subhadrā (Saubhadra) having been slain? Or [how shall I see] the greatly blessed Subhadrā, unable to see her beloved son?
किं स्विद्वयमपेतार्थमश्लिष्टमसमञ्जसम् ।
तावुभौ प्रतिवक्ष्यामो हृषीकेशधनंजयौ ॥९॥
9. kiṁ svidvayamapetārthamaśliṣṭamasamañjasam ,
tāvubhau prativakṣyāmo hṛṣīkeśadhanaṁjayau.
9. kim svit vayam apetārtham aśliṣṭam asamañjasam
tau ubhau prativakṣyāmaḥ hṛṣīkeśadhanañjayau
9. vayam kim svit apetārtham aśliṣṭam asamañjasam
tau ubhau hṛṣīkeśadhanañjayau prativakṣyāmaḥ
9. What indeed will we say to both Kṛṣṇa (Hṛṣīkeśa) and Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) about this meaningless, improper, and inconsistent act?
अहमेव सुभद्रायाः केशवार्जुनयोरपि ।
प्रियकामो जयाकाङ्क्षी कृतवानिदमप्रियम् ॥१०॥
10. ahameva subhadrāyāḥ keśavārjunayorapi ,
priyakāmo jayākāṅkṣī kṛtavānidamapriyam.
10. aham eva subhadrāyāḥ keśavārjunayoḥ api
priyakāmaḥ jayākāṅkṣī kṛtavān idam apriyam
10. aham eva subhadrāyāḥ keśavārjunayoḥ api
priyakāmaḥ jayākāṅkṣī idam apriyam kṛtavān
10. I, indeed, desiring welfare and victory for Subhadrā and also for Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna, have done this unpleasant act.
न लुब्धो बुध्यते दोषान्मोहाल्लोभः प्रवर्तते ।
मधु लिप्सुर्हि नापश्यं प्रपातमिदमीदृशम् ॥११॥
11. na lubdho budhyate doṣānmohāllobhaḥ pravartate ,
madhu lipsurhi nāpaśyaṁ prapātamidamīdṛśam.
11. na lubdhaḥ budhyate doṣān mohāt lobhaḥ pravartate
madhu lipsuḥ hi na apaśyam prapātam idam īdṛśam
11. lubdhaḥ doṣān na budhyate.
lobhaḥ mohāt pravartate.
hi madhu lipsuḥ (aham) idam īdṛśam prapātam na apaśyam.
11. A greedy person does not discern faults; greed arises from delusion (moha). Indeed, desiring honey, I did not see such a precipice as this.
यो हि भोज्ये पुरस्कार्यो यानेषु शयनेषु च ।
भूषणेषु च सोऽस्माभिर्बालो युधि पुरस्कृतः ॥१२॥
12. yo hi bhojye puraskāryo yāneṣu śayaneṣu ca ,
bhūṣaṇeṣu ca so'smābhirbālo yudhi puraskṛtaḥ.
12. yaḥ hi bhojye puraskāryaḥ yāneṣu śayaneṣu ca
bhūṣaṇeṣu ca saḥ asmābhiḥ bālaḥ yudhi puraskṛtaḥ
12. hi yaḥ bhojye yāneṣu śayaneṣu ca bhūṣaṇeṣu ca puraskāryaḥ,
saḥ bālaḥ asmābhiḥ yudhi puraskṛtaḥ.
12. Indeed, he who should be honored with food, conveyances, beds, and ornaments – that child was honored by us in battle.
कथं हि बालस्तरुणो युद्धानामविशारदः ।
सदश्व इव संबाधे विषमे क्षेममर्हति ॥१३॥
13. kathaṁ hi bālastaruṇo yuddhānāmaviśāradaḥ ,
sadaśva iva saṁbādhe viṣame kṣemamarhati.
13. katham hi bālaḥ taruṇaḥ yuddhānām aviśāradaḥ
sat-aśvaḥ iva saṃbādhe viṣame kṣemam arhati
13. hi aviśāradaḥ bālaḥ taruṇaḥ yuddhānām katham
saṃbādhe viṣame sat-aśvaḥ iva kṣemam arhati
13. Indeed, how can a young man, a mere boy, who is unskilled in warfare, attain safety, just like a fine horse might struggle on a difficult and confined path?
नो चेद्धि वयमप्येनं महीमनुशयीमहि ।
बीभत्सोः कोपदीप्तस्य दग्धाः कृपणचक्षुषा ॥१४॥
14. no ceddhi vayamapyenaṁ mahīmanuśayīmahi ,
bībhatsoḥ kopadīptasya dagdhāḥ kṛpaṇacakṣuṣā.
14. no cet hi vayam api enam mahīm anuśayīmahi
bībhatsoḥ kopa-dīptasya dagdhāḥ kṛpaṇa-cakṣuṣā
14. no cet hi vayam api enam mahīm anuśayīmahi
bībhatsoḥ kopa-dīptasya kṛpaṇa-cakṣuṣā dagdhāḥ
14. Otherwise, indeed, we too shall lie upon the earth, consumed by the wrath-inflamed, devastating gaze of Bibhatsu (Arjuna).
अलुब्धो मतिमान्ह्रीमान्क्षमावान्रूपवान्बली ।
वपुष्मान्मानकृद्वीरः प्रियः सत्यपरायणः ॥१५॥
15. alubdho matimānhrīmānkṣamāvānrūpavānbalī ,
vapuṣmānmānakṛdvīraḥ priyaḥ satyaparāyaṇaḥ.
15. alubdhaḥ matimān hrīmān kṣamāvān rūpavān balī
vapuṣmān māna-kṛt vīraḥ priyaḥ satya-parāyaṇaḥ
15. alubdhaḥ matimān hrīmān kṣamāvān rūpavān balī
vapuṣmān māna-kṛt vīraḥ priyaḥ satya-parāyaṇaḥ
15. He is not greedy, intelligent, modest, patient, handsome, strong, well-formed, one who shows respect, heroic, beloved, and devoted to truth.
यस्य श्लाघन्ति विबुधाः कर्माण्यूर्जितकर्मणः ।
निवातकवचाञ्जघ्ने कालकेयांश्च वीर्यवान् ॥१६॥
16. yasya ślāghanti vibudhāḥ karmāṇyūrjitakarmaṇaḥ ,
nivātakavacāñjaghne kālakeyāṁśca vīryavān.
16. yasya ślāghanti vibudhāḥ karmāṇi ūrjita-karmaṇaḥ
nivātakavacān jaghne kālakeyān ca vīryavān
16. vibudhāḥ yasya ūrjita-karmaṇaḥ karmāṇi ślāghanti
vīryavān nivātakavacān ca kālakeyān jaghne
16. The gods praise the mighty deeds of that powerful one, who killed the Nivātakavacas and the Kālakeyas.
महेन्द्रशत्रवो येन हिरण्यपुरवासिनः ।
अक्ष्णोर्निमेषमात्रेण पौलोमाः सगणा हताः ॥१७॥
17. mahendraśatravo yena hiraṇyapuravāsinaḥ ,
akṣṇornimeṣamātreṇa paulomāḥ sagaṇā hatāḥ.
17. mahendraśatravaḥ yena hiraṇyapuravāsinaḥ
akṣṇoḥ nimeṣamātreṇa paulomāḥ sagaṇāḥ hatāḥ
17. yena mahendraśatravaḥ hiraṇyapuravāsinaḥ
paulomāḥ sagaṇāḥ akṣṇoḥ nimeṣamātreṇa hatāḥ
17. By whom the enemies of Indra (Mahendra), the Paulomas, who resided in Hiraṇyapura, were slain along with their hosts in the mere twinkling of an eye.
परेभ्योऽप्यभयार्थिभ्यो यो ददात्यभयं विभुः ।
तस्यास्माभिर्न शकितस्त्रातुमद्यात्मजो भयात् ॥१८॥
18. parebhyo'pyabhayārthibhyo yo dadātyabhayaṁ vibhuḥ ,
tasyāsmābhirna śakitastrātumadyātmajo bhayāt.
18. parebhyaḥ api abhayārthibhyaḥ yaḥ dadāti abhayam vibhuḥ
tasya asmābhiḥ na śakitaḥ trātum adya ātmajaḥ bhayāt
18. yaḥ vibhuḥ parebhyaḥ api abhayārthibhyaḥ abhayam dadāti,
tasya ātmajaḥ adya asmābhiḥ bhayāt trātum na śakitaḥ (asti)
18. That mighty one (vibhu) who grants safety (abhayam) even to others who seek refuge, his own son could not be protected by us from danger today.
भयं तु सुमहत्प्राप्तं धार्तराष्ट्रं महद्बलम् ।
पार्थः पुत्रवधात्क्रुद्धः कौरवाञ्शोषयिष्यति ॥१९॥
19. bhayaṁ tu sumahatprāptaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraṁ mahadbalam ,
pārthaḥ putravadhātkruddhaḥ kauravāñśoṣayiṣyati.
19. bhayam tu sumahat prāptam dhārtarāṣṭram mahat balam
pārthaḥ putravadhāt kruddhaḥ kauravān śoṣayiṣyati
19. tu dhārtarāṣṭram mahat balam sumahat bhayam prāptam
putravadhāt kruddhaḥ pārthaḥ kauravān śoṣayiṣyati
19. Indeed, a very great danger has befallen the mighty army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Dhārtarāṣṭra). Arjuna (Pārtha), enraged by the slaying of his son, will cause the Kauravas to wither away.
क्षुद्रः क्षुद्रसहायश्च स्वपक्षक्षयमातुरः ।
व्यक्तं दुर्योधनो दृष्ट्वा शोचन्हास्यति जीवितम् ॥२०॥
20. kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyaśca svapakṣakṣayamāturaḥ ,
vyaktaṁ duryodhano dṛṣṭvā śocanhāsyati jīvitam.
20. kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyaḥ ca svapakṣakṣayam āturaḥ
vyaktam duryodhanaḥ dṛṣṭvā śocan hāsyati jīvitam
20. kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyaḥ ca svapakṣakṣayam āturaḥ
duryodhanaḥ vyaktam dṛṣṭvā śocan jīvitam hāsyati
20. Certainly, Duryodhana, who is petty, has petty allies, and is distressed by the destruction of his own faction, will, upon witnessing [this], give up his life while lamenting.
न मे जयः प्रीतिकरो न राज्यं न चामरत्वं न सुरैः सलोकता ।
इमं समीक्ष्याप्रतिवीर्यपौरुषं निपातितं देववरात्मजात्मजम् ॥२१॥
21. na me jayaḥ prītikaro na rājyaṁ; na cāmaratvaṁ na suraiḥ salokatā ,
imaṁ samīkṣyāprativīryapauruṣaṁ; nipātitaṁ devavarātmajātmajam.
21. na me jayaḥ prītikaraḥ na rājyam na
ca amaratvam na suraiḥ salokatā
imam samīkṣya aprativīrya-pauruṣam
nipātitam deva-vara-ātmaja-ātmajam
21. imam aprativīrya-pauruṣam deva-vara-ātmaja-ātmajam nipātitam samīkṣya,
me jayaḥ na prītikaraḥ,
na rājyam,
na ca amaratvam,
na suraiḥ salokatā
21. Neither victory, nor a kingdom, nor immortality, nor even dwelling in the same world as the gods, brings me joy. This is because I have seen this one, the grandson of the best of gods, who possessed unmatched valor and prowess, struck down.
