कर्ण उवाच ।
असंशयं सौहृदान्मे प्रणयाच्चात्थ केशव ।
सख्येन चैव वार्ष्णेय श्रेयस्कामतयैव च ॥१॥
1. karṇa uvāca ,
asaṁśayaṁ sauhṛdānme praṇayāccāttha keśava ,
sakhyena caiva vārṣṇeya śreyaskāmatayaiva ca.

1. Karṇa said: O Keśava, you undoubtedly speak to me out of your goodwill and affection, and indeed, O Vārṣṇeya, it is also out of friendship and a desire for my welfare.
सर्वं चैवाभिजानामि पाण्डोः पुत्रोऽस्मि धर्मतः ।
निग्रहाद्धर्मशास्त्राणां यथा त्वं कृष्ण मन्यसे ॥२॥
2. sarvaṁ caivābhijānāmi pāṇḍoḥ putro'smi dharmataḥ ,
nigrahāddharmaśāstrāṇāṁ yathā tvaṁ kṛṣṇa manyase.
2. sarvam ca eva abhijānāmi pāṇḍoḥ putraḥ asmi dharmataḥ
nigrahāt dharmaśāstrāṇām yathā tvam kṛṣṇa manyase
2. kṛṣṇa tvam yathā manyase,
sarvam ca eva abhijānāmi; pāṇḍoḥ putraḥ asmi dharmataḥ; dharmaśāstrāṇām nigrahāt
2. And indeed, I understand everything: I am the son of Pāṇḍu by natural law (dharma). As you, O Kṛṣṇa, believe, this is due to the suppression of the scriptures on natural law (dharmaśāstra).
कन्या गर्भं समाधत्त भास्करान्मां जनार्दन ।
आदित्यवचनाच्चैव जातं मां सा व्यसर्जयत् ॥३॥
3. kanyā garbhaṁ samādhatta bhāskarānmāṁ janārdana ,
ādityavacanāccaiva jātaṁ māṁ sā vyasarjayat.

ādityavacanāt ca eva jātam mām sā vyasarjayat
3. janārdana kanyā bhāskarāt mām garbham samādhatta

3. O Janardana, the maiden (Kuntī) conceived me through Bhāskara (the Sun god). And indeed, by the command of Aditya, she abandoned me after I was born.
सोऽस्मि कृष्ण तथा जातः पाण्डोः पुत्रोऽस्मि धर्मतः ।
कुन्त्या त्वहमपाकीर्णो यथा न कुशलं तथा ॥४॥
4. so'smi kṛṣṇa tathā jātaḥ pāṇḍoḥ putro'smi dharmataḥ ,
kuntyā tvahamapākīrṇo yathā na kuśalaṁ tathā.
4. saḥ asmi kṛṣṇa tathā jātaḥ pāṇḍoḥ putraḥ asmi dharmataḥ
kuntyā tu aham apākīrṇaḥ yathā na kuśalam tathā
4. kṛṣṇa saḥ asmi tathā jātaḥ dharmataḥ pāṇḍoḥ putraḥ
asmi tu kuntyā aham apākīrṇaḥ yathā na kuśalam tathā
4. O Krishna, I am thus born; by natural law (dharma), I am the son of Pāṇḍu. However, Kuntī cast me away in a manner that was not conducive to my welfare.
सूतो हि मामधिरथो दृष्ट्वैव अनयद्गृहान् ।
राधायाश्चैव मां प्रादात्सौहार्दान्मधुसूदन ॥५॥
5. sūto hi māmadhiratho dṛṣṭvaiva anayadgṛhān ,
rādhāyāścaiva māṁ prādātsauhārdānmadhusūdana.
5. sūtaḥ hi mām adhirathaḥ dṛṣṭvā eva anayat gṛhān
rādhāyāḥ ca eva mām prādāt sauhārdāt madhusūdana
5. madhusūdana hi sūtaḥ adhirathaḥ mām dṛṣṭvā eva
gṛhān anayat ca eva sauhārdāt rādhāyāḥ mām prādāt
5. O Madhusūdana, indeed, the charioteer Adhiratha, having seen me, immediately took me to his home. And out of affection, he gave me to Rādhā.
मत्स्नेहाच्चैव राधायाः सद्यः क्षीरमवातरत् ।
सा मे मूत्रं पुरीषं च प्रतिजग्राह माधव ॥६॥
6. matsnehāccaiva rādhāyāḥ sadyaḥ kṣīramavātarat ,
sā me mūtraṁ purīṣaṁ ca pratijagrāha mādhava.
6. mat-snehāt ca eva rādhāyāḥ sadyaḥ kṣīram avātarat
sā me mūtram purīṣam ca pratijagrāha mādhava
6. mādhava ca eva rādhāyāḥ mat-snehāt sadyaḥ kṣīram
avātarat sā me mūtram purīṣam ca pratijagrāha
6. O Mādhava, indeed, due to Rādhā's affection for me, milk immediately flowed (from her breasts). And she accepted my urine and feces.
तस्याः पिण्डव्यपनयं कुर्यादस्मद्विधः कथम् ।
धर्मविद्धर्मशास्त्राणां श्रवणे सततं रतः ॥७॥
7. tasyāḥ piṇḍavyapanayaṁ kuryādasmadvidhaḥ katham ,
dharmaviddharmaśāstrāṇāṁ śravaṇe satataṁ rataḥ.
7. tasyāḥ piṇḍavyapanayaṃ kuryāt asmadvidhaḥ katham
dharmavit dharmaśāstrāṇāṃ śravaṇe satataṃ rataḥ
7. asmadvidhaḥ dharmavit dharmaśāstrāṇāṃ śravaṇe
satataṃ rataḥ tasyāḥ piṇḍavyapanayaṃ katham kuryāt
7. How can one like me, who understands natural law (dharma) and is constantly devoted to hearing the scriptures on natural law (dharmaśāstras), perform the removal of her funeral offering (piṇḍa)?
तथा मामभिजानाति सूतश्चाधिरथः सुतम् ।
पितरं चाभिजानामि तमहं सौहृदात्सदा ॥८॥
8. tathā māmabhijānāti sūtaścādhirathaḥ sutam ,
pitaraṁ cābhijānāmi tamahaṁ sauhṛdātsadā.
8. tathā mām abhijānāti sūtaḥ ca adhirathaḥ sutam
pitaraṃ ca abhijānāmi tam ahaṃ sauhṛdāt sadā
8. tathā sūtaḥ adhirathaḥ ca mām sutam abhijānāti
ca aham sauhṛdāt sadā tam pitaraṃ abhijānāmi
8. Similarly, Suta Adhiratha knows me as his son. And I, out of constant affection, always recognize him as my father.
स हि मे जातकर्मादि कारयामास माधव ।
शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना पुत्रप्रीत्या जनार्दन ॥९॥
9. sa hi me jātakarmādi kārayāmāsa mādhava ,
śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā putraprītyā janārdana.
9. saḥ hi me jātakarmādi kārayāmāsa mādhava
śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā putreprītyā janārdana
9. hi mādhava janārdana saḥ putreprītyā
śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā me jātakarmādi kārayāmāsa
9. Indeed, O Madhava, O Janardana, out of affection for a son, he performed my birth rites (jātakarma) and other ceremonies according to the rules prescribed by the scriptures.
नाम मे वसुषेणेति कारयामास वै द्विजैः ।
भार्याश्चोढा मम प्राप्ते यौवने तेन केशव ॥१०॥
10. nāma me vasuṣeṇeti kārayāmāsa vai dvijaiḥ ,
bhāryāścoḍhā mama prāpte yauvane tena keśava.
10. nāma me vasuṣeṇa iti kārayāmāsa vai dvijaiḥ
bhāryāḥ ca ūḍhāḥ mama prāpte yauvane tena keśava
10. keśava tena vai dvijaiḥ me nāma vasuṣeṇa iti
kārayāmāsa ca mama yauvane prāpte bhāryāḥ ūḍhāḥ
10. O Kesava, he indeed had me named Vasushena by the twice-born (dvijas). And when my youth (yauvana) was attained, my wives were married by him.
तासु पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च मम जाता जनार्दन ।
तासु मे हृदयं कृष्ण संजातं कामबन्धनम् ॥११॥
11. tāsu putrāśca pautrāśca mama jātā janārdana ,
tāsu me hṛdayaṁ kṛṣṇa saṁjātaṁ kāmabandhanam.
11. tāsu putrāḥ ca pautrāḥ ca mama jātāḥ janārdana
tāsu me hṛdayam kṛṣṇa saṃjātam kāmabandhanam
11. janārdana mama putrāḥ ca pautrāḥ ca tāsu jātāḥ
kṛṣṇa me hṛdayam tāsu kāmabandhanam saṃjātam
11. O Janārdana, my sons and grandsons were born from those (women). O Kṛṣṇa, my heart became bound by attachment (kāmabandhanam) to them.
न पृथिव्या सकलया न सुवर्णस्य राशिभिः ।
हर्षाद्भयाद्वा गोविन्द अनृतं वक्तुमुत्सहे ॥१२॥
12. na pṛthivyā sakalayā na suvarṇasya rāśibhiḥ ,
harṣādbhayādvā govinda anṛtaṁ vaktumutsahe.
12. na pṛthivyā sakalayā na suvarṇasya rāśibhiḥ
harṣāt bhayāt vā govinda anṛtam vaktum utsahe
12. govinda (aham) sakalayā pṛthivyā (nimittam) na,
suvarṇasya rāśibhiḥ (nimittam) na,
harṣāt vā bhayāt (api) anṛtam vaktum utsahe (na)
12. O Govinda, I would not dare to speak untruth (anṛta) for the sake of the entire earth, nor for heaps of gold, nor out of joy, nor out of fear.
धृतराष्ट्रकुले कृष्ण दुर्योधनसमाश्रयात् ।
मया त्रयोदश समा भुक्तं राज्यमकण्टकम् ॥१३॥
13. dhṛtarāṣṭrakule kṛṣṇa duryodhanasamāśrayāt ,
mayā trayodaśa samā bhuktaṁ rājyamakaṇṭakam.
13. dhṛtarāṣṭrakule kṛṣṇa duryodhanasamāśrayāt
mayā trayodaśa samā bhuktam rājyam akaṇṭakam
13. kṛṣṇa dhṛtarāṣṭrakule duryodhanasamāśrayāt
mayā trayodaśa samā akaṇṭakam rājyam bhuktam
13. O Kṛṣṇa, in the family of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, due to the patronage of Duryodhana, I enjoyed an unhindered kingdom (rājya) for thirteen years.
इष्टं च बहुभिर्यज्ञैः सह सूतैर्मयासकृत् ।
आवाहाश्च विवाहाश्च सह सूतैः कृता मया ॥१४॥
14. iṣṭaṁ ca bahubhiryajñaiḥ saha sūtairmayāsakṛt ,
āvāhāśca vivāhāśca saha sūtaiḥ kṛtā mayā.
14. iṣṭam ca bahubhiḥ yajñaiḥ saha sūtaiḥ mayā asakṛt
āvāhāḥ ca vivāhāḥ ca saha sūtaiḥ kṛtāḥ mayā
14. mayā asakṛt bahubhiḥ yajñaiḥ saha sūtaiḥ iṣṭam ca
mayā ca saha sūtaiḥ āvāhāḥ ca vivāhāḥ ca kṛtāḥ
14. And many Vedic rituals (yajña) were performed by me repeatedly along with the bards (sūta). I also conducted invitations and marriages along with the bards (sūta).
मां च कृष्ण समाश्रित्य कृतः शस्त्रसमुद्यमः ।
दुर्योधनेन वार्ष्णेय विग्रहश्चापि पाण्डवैः ॥१५॥
15. māṁ ca kṛṣṇa samāśritya kṛtaḥ śastrasamudyamaḥ ,
duryodhanena vārṣṇeya vigrahaścāpi pāṇḍavaiḥ.
15. mām ca kṛṣṇa samāśritya kṛtaḥ śastra-samudyamaḥ
duryodhenena vārṣṇeya vigrahaḥ ca api pāṇḍavaiḥ
15. kṛṣṇa vārṣṇeya duryodhenena mām samāśritya
śastra-samudyamaḥ kṛtaḥ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ vigrahaḥ ca api
15. O Kṛṣṇa (vārṣṇeya), Duryodhana, having taken refuge in me, has undertaken an armed effort and also engaged in conflict with the Pāṇḍavas.
तस्माद्रणे द्वैरथे मां प्रत्युद्यातारमच्युत ।
वृतवान्परमं हृष्टः प्रतीपं सव्यसाचिनः ॥१६॥
16. tasmādraṇe dvairathe māṁ pratyudyātāramacyuta ,
vṛtavānparamaṁ hṛṣṭaḥ pratīpaṁ savyasācinaḥ.
16. tasmāt raṇe dvairathe mām pratyudyātāram acyuta
vṛtavān paramam hṛṣṭaḥ pratīpam savyasācinaḥ
16. acyuta tasmāt raṇe dvairathe (saḥ) paramam hṛṣṭaḥ
mām savyasācinaḥ pratyudyātāram pratīpam vṛtavān
16. Therefore, O Acyuta, greatly delighted, he (Duryodhana) chose me in battle, for a duel, to confront Savyasācin (Arjuna).
वधाद्बन्धाद्भयाद्वापि लोभाद्वापि जनार्दन ।
अनृतं नोत्सहे कर्तुं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः ॥१७॥
17. vadhādbandhādbhayādvāpi lobhādvāpi janārdana ,
anṛtaṁ notsahe kartuṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ.
17. vadhāt bandhāt bhayāt vā api lobhāt vā api janārdana
anṛtam na utsahe kartum dhārtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ
17. janārdana vadhāt bandhāt bhayāt vā api lobhāt vā api
(aham) dhīmataḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya anṛtam kartum na utsahe
17. O Janārdana, I am not able to speak falsely to the intelligent son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), not even from fear of death, imprisonment, or out of greed.
यदि ह्यद्य न गच्छेयं द्वैरथं सव्यसाचिना ।
अकीर्तिः स्याद्धृषीकेश मम पार्थस्य चोभयोः ॥१८॥
18. yadi hyadya na gaccheyaṁ dvairathaṁ savyasācinā ,
akīrtiḥ syāddhṛṣīkeśa mama pārthasya cobhayoḥ.
18. yadi hi adya na gaccheyam dvairatham savyasācinā
akīrtiḥ syāt hṛṣīkeśa mama pārthasya ca ubhayoḥ
18. hṛṣīkeśa yadi hi adya savyasācinā dvairatham na gaccheyam,
mama ca pārthasya ca ubhayoḥ akīrtiḥ syāt
18. Indeed, O Hṛṣīkeśa, if I do not engage in a duel with Savyasācin (Arjuna) today, dishonor would come to both me and Pārtha (Arjuna).
असंशयं हितार्थाय ब्रूयास्त्वं मधुसूदन ।
सर्वं च पाण्डवाः कुर्युस्त्वद्वशित्वान्न संशयः ॥१९॥
19. asaṁśayaṁ hitārthāya brūyāstvaṁ madhusūdana ,
sarvaṁ ca pāṇḍavāḥ kuryustvadvaśitvānna saṁśayaḥ.
19. asaṃśayaṃ hitārthāya brūyāḥ tvaṃ madhusūdana
sarvaṃ ca pāṇḍavāḥ kuryuḥ tvadvaśitvāt na saṃśayaḥ
19. madhusūdana tvaṃ asaṃśayaṃ hitārthāya brūyāḥ ca
pāṇḍavāḥ tvadvaśitvāt sarvaṃ kuryuḥ na saṃśayaḥ
19. O Madhusūdana, you should speak for their welfare without any doubt. And the Pāṇḍavas will certainly do everything, as they are under your influence; there is no doubt about this.
मन्त्रस्य नियमं कुर्यास्त्वमत्र पुरुषोत्तम ।
एतदत्र हितं मन्ये सर्वयादवनन्दन ॥२०॥
20. mantrasya niyamaṁ kuryāstvamatra puruṣottama ,
etadatra hitaṁ manye sarvayādavanandana.
20. mantrasya niyamaṃ kuryāḥ tvaṃ atra puruṣottama
etat atra hitaṃ manye sarvayādavanandana
20. puruṣottama tvaṃ atra mantrasya niyamaṃ kuryāḥ
sarvayādavanandana atra etat hitaṃ manye
20. O best among men (puruṣottama), you should establish the decision for the strategy (mantra) here. I consider this beneficial here, O delight of all the Yadus.
यदि जानाति मां राजा धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः ।
कुन्त्याः प्रथमजं पुत्रं न स राज्यं ग्रहीष्यति ॥२१॥
21. yadi jānāti māṁ rājā dharmātmā saṁśitavrataḥ ,
kuntyāḥ prathamajaṁ putraṁ na sa rājyaṁ grahīṣyati.
21. yadi jānāti māṃ rājā dharmātmā saṃśitavrataḥ
kuntyāḥ prathamajaṃ putraṃ na saḥ rājyaṃ grahīṣyati
21. yadi dharmātmā saṃśitavrataḥ rājā kuntyāḥ prathamajaṃ putraṃ māṃ jānāti,
saḥ rājyaṃ na grahīṣyati
21. If the king, who possesses a righteous nature (dharma) and is firm in his vows, knows me to be Kuntī's first-born son, he will not seize the kingdom.
प्राप्य चापि महद्राज्यं तदहं मधुसूदन ।
स्फीतं दुर्योधनायैव संप्रदद्यामरिंदम ॥२२॥
22. prāpya cāpi mahadrājyaṁ tadahaṁ madhusūdana ,
sphītaṁ duryodhanāyaiva saṁpradadyāmariṁdama.
22. prāpya ca api mahat rājyaṃ tat ahaṃ madhusūdana
sphītaṃ duryodhanāya eva saṃpradadyām ariṃdama
22. madhusūdana ariṃdama ca api mahat sphītaṃ tat rājyaṃ prāpya,
ahaṃ duryodhanāya eva saṃpradadyām
22. O Madhusūdana, O subduer of enemies, even after obtaining that great and prosperous kingdom, I would indeed bestow it upon Duryodhana alone.
स एव राजा धर्मात्मा शाश्वतोऽस्तु युधिष्ठिरः ।
नेता यस्य हृषीकेशो योद्धा यस्य धनंजयः ॥२३॥
23. sa eva rājā dharmātmā śāśvato'stu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
netā yasya hṛṣīkeśo yoddhā yasya dhanaṁjayaḥ.
23. sa eva rājā dharmātmā śāśvataḥ astu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
netā yasya hṛṣīkeśaḥ yoddhā yasya dhanañjayaḥ
23. yasya netā hṛṣīkeśaḥ yasya yoddhā dhanañjayaḥ
saḥ eva dharmātmā rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ śāśvataḥ astu
23. May that very Yudhishthira, the king whose nature (dharma) is righteous, be everlasting, he whose leader is Hrishikesha (Krishna) and whose warrior is Dhananjaya (Arjuna).
पृथिवी तस्य राष्ट्रं च यस्य भीमो महारथः ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च द्रौपदेयाश्च माधव ॥२४॥
24. pṛthivī tasya rāṣṭraṁ ca yasya bhīmo mahārathaḥ ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca draupadeyāśca mādhava.
24. pṛthivī tasya rāṣṭram ca yasya bhīmaḥ mahārathaḥ
nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca draupadeyāḥ ca mādhava
24. mādhava yasya bhīmaḥ mahārathaḥ nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ
ca draupadeyāḥ ca tasya pṛthivī rāṣṭram ca
24. O Madhava, the earth is his kingdom, the one whose Bhima is a great warrior (mahāratha), and Nakula, and Sahadeva, and the sons of Draupadi are also with him.
उत्तमौजा युधामन्युः सत्यधर्मा च सोमकिः ।
चैद्यश्च चेकितानश्च शिखण्डी चापराजितः ॥२५॥
25. uttamaujā yudhāmanyuḥ satyadharmā ca somakiḥ ,
caidyaśca cekitānaśca śikhaṇḍī cāparājitaḥ.
25. uttamaujā yudhāmanyuḥ satyadharmā ca somakiḥ
caidyaḥ ca cekitānaḥ ca śikhaṇḍī ca aparājitaḥ
25. uttamaujā yudhāmanyuḥ satyadharmā ca somakiḥ ca
caidyaḥ ca cekitānaḥ ca śikhaṇḍī ca aparājitaḥ
25. Uttamaujas, Yudhāmanyu, Satyadharma, and the Somaki king, also the Chedi king, Chekitana, and the unconquered (aparājita) Shikhaṇḍī.
इन्द्रगोपकवर्णाश्च केकया भ्रातरस्तथा ।
इन्द्रायुधसवर्णश्च कुन्तिभोजो महारथः ॥२६॥
26. indragopakavarṇāśca kekayā bhrātarastathā ,
indrāyudhasavarṇaśca kuntibhojo mahārathaḥ.
26. indragopakavarṇāḥ ca kekayā bhrātaraḥ tathā
indrāyudhasavarṇaḥ ca kuntibhojaḥ mahārathaḥ
26. indragopakavarṇāḥ kekayā bhrātaraḥ ca tathā
indrāyudhasavarṇaḥ kuntibhojaḥ ca mahārathaḥ
26. And the Kekaya brothers, whose color is like that of an Indragopaka insect, and also King Kuntibhoja, a great warrior (mahāratha), whose color is like that of a rainbow (Indrāyudha).
मातुलो भीमसेनस्य सेनजिच्च महारथः ।
शङ्खः पुत्रो विराटस्य निधिस्त्वं च जनार्दन ॥२७॥
27. mātulo bhīmasenasya senajicca mahārathaḥ ,
śaṅkhaḥ putro virāṭasya nidhistvaṁ ca janārdana.
27. mātulaḥ bhīmasenasya senajit ca mahārathaḥ
śaṅkhaḥ putraḥ virāṭasya nidhiḥ tvam ca janārdana
27. janārdana! bhīmasenasya mātulaḥ ca mahārathaḥ senajit ca virāṭasya putraḥ śaṅkhaḥ ca tvam nidhiḥ (asi).
27. The maternal uncle of Bhimasena, and Senajit, the great charioteer, and Shankha, the son of Virata; and you, O Janardana, are our treasure.
महानयं कृष्ण कृतः क्षत्रस्य समुदानयः ।
राज्यं प्राप्तमिदं दीप्तं प्रथितं सर्वराजसु ॥२८॥
28. mahānayaṁ kṛṣṇa kṛtaḥ kṣatrasya samudānayaḥ ,
rājyaṁ prāptamidaṁ dīptaṁ prathitaṁ sarvarājasu.
28. mahān ayam kṛṣṇa kṛtaḥ kṣatrasya samudānayaḥ
rājyam prāptam idam dīptam prathitam sarvarājasu
28. kṛṣṇa! ayam kṣatrasya mahān samudānayaḥ kṛtaḥ.
idam dīptam sarvarājasu prathitam rājyam prāptam (idam rājyam asti).
28. O Krishna, this grand assembly of the warrior class has been brought about. This splendid kingdom, renowned among all kings, has been attained.
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वार्ष्णेय शस्त्रयज्ञो भविष्यति ।
अस्य यज्ञस्य वेत्ता त्वं भविष्यसि जनार्दन ।
आध्वर्यवं च ते कृष्ण क्रतावस्मिन्भविष्यति ॥२९॥
29. dhārtarāṣṭrasya vārṣṇeya śastrayajño bhaviṣyati ,
asya yajñasya vettā tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi janārdana ,
ādhvaryavaṁ ca te kṛṣṇa kratāvasminbhaviṣyati.

29. O Vārṣṇeya (Krishna), the weapon-ritual (yajña) of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) will take place. O Janārdana, you will be the knower (or performer) of this ritual (yajña). And O Krishna, the office of the adhvaryu priest will be yours in this ritual (yajña).
होता चैवात्र बीभत्सुः संनद्धः स कपिध्वजः ।
गाण्डीवं स्रुक्तथाज्यं च वीर्यं पुंसां भविष्यति ॥३०॥
30. hotā caivātra bībhatsuḥ saṁnaddhaḥ sa kapidhvajaḥ ,
gāṇḍīvaṁ sruktathājyaṁ ca vīryaṁ puṁsāṁ bhaviṣyati.
30. hotā ca eva atra bhībhatsuḥ saṃnaddhaḥ saḥ kapidhvajaḥ
gāṇḍīvam sruc tathā ājyam ca vīryam puṃsām bhaviṣyati
30. atra ca eva saḥ saṃnaddhaḥ kapidhvajaḥ bhībhatsuḥ hotā (bhaviṣyati).
gāṇḍīvam ca tathā puṃsām vīryam (ca) sruc ājyam ca bhaviṣyati.
30. And here, indeed, that Bibhatsu (Arjuna), armed and bearing the monkey banner, will be the "hotṛ" priest. The Gandiva (bow), along with the prowess of men, will become the ladle and the clarified butter.
ऐन्द्रं पाशुपतं ब्राह्मं स्थूणाकर्णं च माधव ।
मन्त्रास्तत्र भविष्यन्ति प्रयुक्ताः सव्यसाचिना ॥३१॥
31. aindraṁ pāśupataṁ brāhmaṁ sthūṇākarṇaṁ ca mādhava ,
mantrāstatra bhaviṣyanti prayuktāḥ savyasācinā.

31. O Mādhava, the divine powers/weapons (mantras) such as Aindra, Pāśupata, Brāhma, and Sthūṇākarṇa will be employed there by Arjuna (Savyasācin).
अनुयातश्च पितरमधिको वा पराक्रमे ।
ग्रावस्तोत्रं स सौभद्रः सम्यक्तत्र करिष्यति ॥३२॥
32. anuyātaśca pitaramadhiko vā parākrame ,
grāvastotraṁ sa saubhadraḥ samyaktatra kariṣyati.

32. He, Saubhadra (Abhimanyu), being either equal to his father or superior in valor, will properly perform the praise of stones (grāvastotra) there.
उद्गातात्र पुनर्भीमः प्रस्तोता सुमहाबलः ।
विनदन्स नरव्याघ्रो नागानीकान्तकृद्रणे ॥३३॥
33. udgātātra punarbhīmaḥ prastotā sumahābalaḥ ,
vinadansa naravyāghro nāgānīkāntakṛdraṇe.

33. Moreover, here, Bhīma, the exceedingly mighty (sumahābala) tiger among men (naravyāghra), roaring and destroying elephant armies, will be the Udgātṛ and Prastotṛ (priest) in battle.
स चैव तत्र धर्मात्मा शश्वद्राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
जपैर्होमैश्च संयुक्तो ब्रह्मत्वं कारयिष्यति ॥३४॥
34. sa caiva tatra dharmātmā śaśvadrājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
japairhomaiśca saṁyukto brahmatvaṁ kārayiṣyati.
34. saḥ ca eva tatra dharmātmā śaśvat rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
japaiḥ homaiḥ ca saṃyuktaḥ brahmatvam kārayiṣyati

34. And indeed, that righteous-souled (dharmātmā) King Yudhiṣṭhira will always be there, engaged in sacred recitations (japa) and offerings (homa), and he will arrange for the performance of the Brahman (brahman) priest's office.
शङ्खशब्दाः समुरजा भेर्यश्च मधुसूदन ।
उत्कृष्टसिंहनादाश्च सुब्रह्मण्यो भविष्यति ॥३५॥
35. śaṅkhaśabdāḥ samurajā bheryaśca madhusūdana ,
utkṛṣṭasiṁhanādāśca subrahmaṇyo bhaviṣyati.

35. O Madhusudana, there will be sounds of conches, along with drums and war-drums, and mighty lion-roars, and auspicious brahminical cries (subrahmaṇya) will resound.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ यशस्विनौ ।
शामित्रं तौ महावीर्यौ सम्यक्तत्र करिष्यतः ॥३६॥
36. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca mādrīputrau yaśasvinau ,
śāmitraṁ tau mahāvīryau samyaktatra kariṣyataḥ.

36. Nakula and Sahadeva, the two glorious sons of Madri, those two mighty heroes, will perform their ritualistic slaying (śāmitra) perfectly there.
कल्माषदण्डा गोविन्द विमला रथशक्तयः ।
यूपाः समुपकल्पन्तामस्मिन्यज्ञे जनार्दन ॥३७॥
37. kalmāṣadaṇḍā govinda vimalā rathaśaktayaḥ ,
yūpāḥ samupakalpantāmasminyajñe janārdana.

37. O Govinda (Krishna), O Janārdana (Krishna), let the spotless chariot-spears be prepared as sacrificial posts with dappled markings (from battle) in this Vedic ritual (yajña).
कर्णिनालीकनाराचा वत्सदन्तोपबृंहणाः ।
तोमराः सोमकलशाः पवित्राणि धनूंषि च ॥३८॥
38. karṇinālīkanārācā vatsadantopabṛṁhaṇāḥ ,
tomarāḥ somakalaśāḥ pavitrāṇi dhanūṁṣi ca.

38. Arrows (including) headed ones, reed arrows, and iron arrows, enhanced with calf-tooth-like tips; spears; Soma jars; purifiers (pavitra); and bows (should be prepared).
असयोऽत्र कपालानि पुरोडाशाः शिरांसि च ।
हविस्तु रुधिरं कृष्ण अस्मिन्यज्ञे भविष्यति ॥३९॥
39. asayo'tra kapālāni puroḍāśāḥ śirāṁsi ca ,
havistu rudhiraṁ kṛṣṇa asminyajñe bhaviṣyati.

haviḥ tu rudhiraṃ kṛṣṇa asmin yajñe bhaviṣyati

39. Here, the swords (will serve as) the skull-cups, and the heads (will be) the sacrificial cakes. But, O Krishna, the oblation in this Vedic ritual (yajña) will be blood.
इध्माः परिधयश्चैव शक्त्योऽथ विमला गदाः ।
सदस्या द्रोणशिष्याश्च कृपस्य च शरद्वतः ॥४०॥
40. idhmāḥ paridhayaścaiva śaktyo'tha vimalā gadāḥ ,
sadasyā droṇaśiṣyāśca kṛpasya ca śaradvataḥ.

40. The sacrificial fuel sticks (idhma) and enclosing sticks (paridhi) will indeed be spears (śakti) and gleaming maces. And the officiants (sadasyāḥ) will be Drona's disciples and Kripa, the son of Sharadvata.
इषवोऽत्र परिस्तोमा मुक्ता गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
महारथप्रयुक्ताश्च द्रोणद्रौणिप्रचोदिताः ॥४१॥
41. iṣavo'tra paristomā muktā gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
mahārathaprayuktāśca droṇadrauṇipracoditāḥ.

41. Here, the sacrificial chants (paristoma) will be the arrows discharged by Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, and employed by great charioteers. These arrows will also be impelled by Drona and Droni (Ashvatthama).
प्रातिप्रस्थानिकं कर्म सात्यकिः स करिष्यति ।
दीक्षितो धार्तराष्ट्रोऽत्र पत्नी चास्य महाचमूः ॥४२॥
42. prātiprasthānikaṁ karma sātyakiḥ sa kariṣyati ,
dīkṣito dhārtarāṣṭro'tra patnī cāsya mahācamūḥ.

42. Satyaki will perform the action (karma) of the Prātiprasthātṛ priest. Here, the son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana) will be the consecrated sacrificer (dīkṣita), and his great army will be his wife.
घटोत्कचोऽत्र शामित्रं करिष्यति महाबलः ।
अतिरात्रे महाबाहो वितते यज्ञकर्मणि ॥४३॥
43. ghaṭotkaco'tra śāmitraṁ kariṣyati mahābalaḥ ,
atirātre mahābāho vitate yajñakarmaṇi.

43. O mighty-armed one, the mighty Ghaṭotkaca will perform the sacrificial slaughter here, during the elaborate ritual of the Atirātra (yajña).
दक्षिणा त्वस्य यज्ञस्य धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् ।
वैताने कर्मणि तते जातो यः कृष्ण पावकात् ॥४४॥
44. dakṣiṇā tvasya yajñasya dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān ,
vaitāne karmaṇi tate jāto yaḥ kṛṣṇa pāvakāt.
44. dakṣiṇā tu asya yajñasya dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān
vaitāne karmaṇi tate jātaḥ yaḥ kṛṣṇa pāvakāt

44. O Kṛṣṇa, the mighty Dhṛṣṭadyumna, who was born from fire during the extensive Vedic ritual (karma), is indeed the sacrificial outcome (dakṣiṇā) of this (Vedic ritual) yajña.
यदब्रुवमहं कृष्ण कटुकानि स्म पाण्डवान् ।
प्रियार्थं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य तेन तप्येऽद्य कर्मणा ॥४५॥
45. yadabruvamahaṁ kṛṣṇa kaṭukāni sma pāṇḍavān ,
priyārthaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya tena tapye'dya karmaṇā.
45. yat abruvam aham kṛṣṇa kaṭukāni sma pāṇḍavān
priyārtham dhārtarāṣṭrasya tena tapye adya karmaṇā
45. kṛṣṇa,
yat kaṭukāni aham dhārtarāṣṭrasya priyārtham pāṇḍavān abruvam sma,
tena karmaṇā adya tapye
45. O Kṛṣṇa, I am tormented today by that very action (karma) – the harsh words I spoke to the Pāṇḍavas for the sake of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि मां कृष्ण निहतं सव्यसाचिना ।
पुनश्चितिस्तदा चास्य यज्ञस्याथ भविष्यति ॥४६॥
46. yadā drakṣyasi māṁ kṛṣṇa nihataṁ savyasācinā ,
punaścitistadā cāsya yajñasyātha bhaviṣyati.
46. yadā drakṣyasi mām kṛṣṇa nihatam savyasācinā
punaḥ citiḥ tadā ca asya yajñasya atha bhaviṣyati
46. kṛṣṇa yadā savyasācinā nihatam mām drakṣyasi,
tadā ca atha asya yajñasya punaḥ citiḥ bhaviṣyati
46. O Kṛṣṇa, when you see me slain by Arjuna (Savyasācin), then thereupon there will indeed be a renewal of this Vedic ritual (yajña).
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं यदा पास्यति पाण्डवः ।
आनर्दं नर्दतः सम्यक्तदा सुत्यं भविष्यति ॥४७॥
47. duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ yadā pāsyati pāṇḍavaḥ ,
ānardaṁ nardataḥ samyaktadā sutyaṁ bhaviṣyati.
47. duḥśāsanasyā rudhiram yadā pāsyati pāṇḍavaḥ
ānardam nardataḥ samyak tadā sutyam bhaviṣyati
47. yadā pāṇḍavaḥ duḥśāsanasyā rudhiram ānardam

47. When the Pāṇḍava (Bhīma) drinks the blood of Duḥśāsana, roaring loudly and completely, then the fulfillment of the vow (sutyam) will occur.
यदा द्रोणं च भीष्मं च पाञ्चाल्यौ पातयिष्यतः ।
तदा यज्ञावसानं तद्भविष्यति जनार्दन ॥४८॥
48. yadā droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca pāñcālyau pātayiṣyataḥ ,
tadā yajñāvasānaṁ tadbhaviṣyati janārdana.
48. yadā droṇam ca bhīṣmam ca pāñcālyau pātayiṣyataḥ
tadā yajñāvasānam tat bhaviṣyati janārdana
48. janārdana yadā pāñcālyau droṇam ca bhīṣmam ca

48. O Janārdana, when the two Pāñcāla warriors (Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍī) fell both Droṇa and Bhīṣma, then that will be the conclusion of the Vedic ritual (yajña).
दुर्योधनं यदा हन्ता भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
तदा समाप्स्यते यज्ञो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव ॥४९॥
49. duryodhanaṁ yadā hantā bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
tadā samāpsyate yajño dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava.

tadā samāpsyate yajñaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava
49. mādhava yadā mahābalaḥ bhīmasenaḥ duryodhanam

49. O Mādhava, when the mighty Bhīmasena kills Duryodhana, then the Vedic ritual (yajña) of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son will be completed.
स्नुषाश्च प्रस्नुषाश्चैव धृतराष्ट्रस्य संगताः ।
हतेश्वरा हतसुता हतनाथाश्च केशव ॥५०॥
50. snuṣāśca prasnuṣāścaiva dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṁgatāḥ ,
hateśvarā hatasutā hatanāthāśca keśava.
50. snuṣāḥ ca prasnuṣāḥ ca eva dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṅgatāḥ
hateśvarāḥ hatasutāḥ hatanāthāḥ ca keśava

50. O Keśava, the daughters-in-law and also the great-granddaughters-in-law of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having assembled, will be those whose husbands are slain, whose sons are slain, and whose protectors are slain.
गान्धार्या सह रोदन्त्यः श्वगृध्रकुरराकुले ।
स यज्ञेऽस्मिन्नवभृथो भविष्यति जनार्दन ॥५१॥
51. gāndhāryā saha rodantyaḥ śvagṛdhrakurarākule ,
sa yajñe'sminnavabhṛtho bhaviṣyati janārdana.

51. O Janārdana, in this ritual (yajña) – a place teeming with dogs, vultures, and ospreys, where women will weep alongside Gāndhārī – there will be the concluding bath (avabhṛtha).
विद्यावृद्धा वयोवृद्धाः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ।
वृथामृत्युं न कुर्वीरंस्त्वत्कृते मधुसूदन ॥५२॥
52. vidyāvṛddhā vayovṛddhāḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ,
vṛthāmṛtyuṁ na kurvīraṁstvatkṛte madhusūdana.
52. vidyāvṛddhāḥ vayovṛddhāḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha
vṛthā mṛtyum na kurvīran tvatkṛte madhusūdana
52. kṣatriyarṣabha madhusūdana vidyāvṛddhāḥ vayovṛddhāḥ
kṣatriyāḥ tvatkṛte vṛthā mṛtyum na kurvīran
52. O best among kṣatriyas, O Madhusūdana, kṣatriyas who are venerable in knowledge and advanced in age should not incur a useless death because of you.
शस्त्रेण निधनं गच्छेत्समृद्धं क्षत्रमण्डलम् ।
कुरुक्षेत्रे पुण्यतमे त्रैलोक्यस्यापि केशव ॥५३॥
53. śastreṇa nidhanaṁ gacchetsamṛddhaṁ kṣatramaṇḍalam ,
kurukṣetre puṇyatame trailokyasyāpi keśava.

53. O Keśava, should the flourishing assembly of kṣatriyas perish by weapons in Kurukṣetra, the most sacred (land) even among the three worlds?
तदत्र पुण्डरीकाक्ष विधत्स्व यदभीप्सितम् ।
यथा कार्त्स्न्येन वार्ष्णेय क्षत्रं स्वर्गमवाप्नुयात् ॥५४॥
54. tadatra puṇḍarīkākṣa vidhatsva yadabhīpsitam ,
yathā kārtsnyena vārṣṇeya kṣatraṁ svargamavāpnuyāt.

yathā kārtsnyena vārṣṇeya kṣatram svargam avāpnuyāt

54. Therefore, O lotus-eyed one, O Vārṣṇeya, decide now whatever you deem fit, so that the kṣatriya class may attain heaven completely.
यावत्स्थास्यन्ति गिरयः सरितश्च जनार्दन ।
तावत्कीर्तिभवः शब्दः शाश्वतोऽयं भविष्यति ॥५५॥
55. yāvatsthāsyanti girayaḥ saritaśca janārdana ,
tāvatkīrtibhavaḥ śabdaḥ śāśvato'yaṁ bhaviṣyati.
55. yāvat sthāsyanti girayaḥ saritaḥ ca janārdana
tāvat kīrtibhavaḥ śabdaḥ śāśvataḥ ayam bhaviṣyati
55. janārdana yāvat girayaḥ ca saritaḥ sthāsyanti

55. O Janardana, as long as mountains and rivers endure, so long will this eternal, fame-generating word (śabda) [of praise] continue to exist.
ब्राह्मणाः कथयिष्यन्ति महाभारतमाहवम् ।
समागमेषु वार्ष्णेय क्षत्रियाणां यशोधरम् ॥५६॥
56. brāhmaṇāḥ kathayiṣyanti mahābhāratamāhavam ,
samāgameṣu vārṣṇeya kṣatriyāṇāṁ yaśodharam.

56. vārṣṇeya brāhmaṇāḥ samāgameṣu kṣatriyāṇām
āhavam yaśodharam mahābhāratam kathayiṣyanti
56. O Vārṣṇeya, Brāhmaṇas will narrate the Mahābhārata - which is a war (āhava) and bestows renown (yaśas) upon the kṣatriyas - in their assemblies.
समुपानय कौन्तेयं युद्धाय मम केशव ।
मन्त्रसंवरणं कुर्वन्नित्यमेव परंतप ॥५७॥
57. samupānaya kaunteyaṁ yuddhāya mama keśava ,
mantrasaṁvaraṇaṁ kurvannityameva paraṁtapa.

57. O Keśava, O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), bring Kunti's son [Arjuna] for my battle, always maintaining the concealment of counsel (mantra).
