कण्व उवाच ।
गरुडस्तत्तु शुश्राव यथावृत्तं महाबलः ।
आयुःप्रदानं शक्रेण कृतं नागस्य भारत ॥१॥
1. kaṇva uvāca ,
garuḍastattu śuśrāva yathāvṛttaṁ mahābalaḥ ,
āyuḥpradānaṁ śakreṇa kṛtaṁ nāgasya bhārata.
1. kaṇvaḥ uvāca garuḍaḥ tat tu śuśrāva yathāvṛttam
mahābalaḥ āyuḥpradānam śakreṇa kṛtam nāgasya bhārata
1. Kanva said, "O descendant of Bharata, the mighty Garuda heard what had occurred: the granting of long life to the serpent by Shakra (Indra)."
पक्षवातेन महता रुद्ध्वा त्रिभुवनं खगः ।
सुपर्णः परमक्रुद्धो वासवं समुपाद्रवत् ॥२॥
2. pakṣavātena mahatā ruddhvā tribhuvanaṁ khagaḥ ,
suparṇaḥ paramakruddho vāsavaṁ samupādravat.
2. pakṣavātena mahatā ruddhvā tribhuvanam khagaḥ
suparṇaḥ paramakruddhaḥ vāsavam samupādravat
2. Suparna, the bird, intensely enraged, rushed towards Vasava (Indra), having enveloped the three worlds with the powerful wind generated by his wings.
गरुड उवाच ।
भगवन्किमवज्ञानात्क्षुधां प्रति भये मम ।
कामकारवरं दत्त्वा पुनश्चलितवानसि ॥३॥
3. garuḍa uvāca ,
bhagavankimavajñānātkṣudhāṁ prati bhaye mama ,
kāmakāravaraṁ dattvā punaścalitavānasi.
3. garuḍaḥ uvāca bhagavan kim avajñānāt kṣudhām prati
bhaye mama kāmakāravaram dattvā punaḥ calitavān asi
3. Garuda said, "O Lord, after granting me the boon (vara) to act as I please, why have you changed your mind again? Is it due to disrespect, or because of my fear concerning hunger?"
निसर्गात्सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतेश्वरेण मे ।
आहारो विहितो धात्रा किमर्थं वार्यते त्वया ॥४॥
4. nisargātsarvabhūtānāṁ sarvabhūteśvareṇa me ,
āhāro vihito dhātrā kimarthaṁ vāryate tvayā.
4. nisargāt sarvabhūtānām sarvabhūteśvareṇa me
āhāraḥ vihitaḥ dhātrā kimartham vāryate tvayā
4. My sustenance, which is for all beings by their intrinsic nature (nisarga) and ordained by the Lord of all beings, has been prescribed by the Creator (dhātṛ). Why is it being obstructed by you?
वृतश्चैष महानागः स्थापितः समयश्च मे ।
अनेन च मया देव भर्तव्यः प्रसवो महान् ॥५॥
5. vṛtaścaiṣa mahānāgaḥ sthāpitaḥ samayaśca me ,
anena ca mayā deva bhartavyaḥ prasavo mahān.
5. vṛtaḥ ca eṣaḥ mahānāgaḥ sthāpitaḥ samayaḥ ca me
anena ca mayā deva bhartavyaḥ prasavaḥ mahān
5. This great Nāga was chosen, and an agreement (samaya) was established by me. And, O god, through this, a vast progeny must be sustained by me.
एतस्मिंस्त्वन्यथाभूते नान्यं हिंसितुमुत्सहे ।
क्रीडसे कामकारेण देवराज यथेच्छकम् ॥६॥
6. etasmiṁstvanyathābhūte nānyaṁ hiṁsitumutsahe ,
krīḍase kāmakāreṇa devarāja yathecchakam.
6. etasmin tu anyathābhūte na anyam hiṃsitum
utsahe krīḍase kāmakāreṇa devarāja yathecchakam
6. But if this (agreement) is violated, I would not dare to harm another. O king of gods (devarāja), you act according to your own will, just as you please.
सोऽहं प्राणान्विमोक्ष्यामि तथा परिजनो मम ।
ये च भृत्या मम गृहे प्रीतिमान्भव वासव ॥७॥
7. so'haṁ prāṇānvimokṣyāmi tathā parijano mama ,
ye ca bhṛtyā mama gṛhe prītimānbhava vāsava.
7. saḥ aham prāṇān vimokṣyāmi tathā parijanaḥ mama
ye ca bhṛtyāḥ mama gṛhe prītimān bhava vāsava
7. Therefore, I will abandon my vital breaths (prāṇa), and so will my retinue. And for my servants who are in my house, O Vāsava, be content (with this outcome)!
एतच्चैवाहमर्हामि भूयश्च बलवृत्रहन् ।
त्रैलोक्यस्येश्वरो योऽहं परभृत्यत्वमागतः ॥८॥
8. etaccaivāhamarhāmi bhūyaśca balavṛtrahan ,
trailokyasyeśvaro yo'haṁ parabhṛtyatvamāgataḥ.
8. etat ca eva aham arhāmi bhūyaḥ ca balavṛtrahan
trailokasya īśvaraḥ yaḥ aham parabhṛtyatvam āgataḥ
8. O slayer of Bala and Vṛtra (balavṛtrahan), I am indeed worthy of this, all the more so because I, who am the lord of the three worlds, have been reduced to serving others.
त्वयि तिष्ठति देवेश न विष्णुः कारणं मम ।
त्रैलोक्यराज राज्यं हि त्वयि वासव शाश्वतम् ॥९॥
9. tvayi tiṣṭhati deveśa na viṣṇuḥ kāraṇaṁ mama ,
trailokyarāja rājyaṁ hi tvayi vāsava śāśvatam.
9. tvayi tiṣṭhati deveśa na viṣṇuḥ kāraṇam mama
trailokyarāja rājyam hi tvayi vāsava śāśvatam
9. O lord of gods (deveśa), as long as you endure, Vishnu is not the source of my concern. Indeed, O Vāsava (vāsava), sovereignty over the three worlds is eternally established in you.
ममापि दक्षस्य सुता जननी कश्यपः पिता ।
अहमप्युत्सहे लोकान्समस्तान्वोढुमञ्जसा ॥१०॥
10. mamāpi dakṣasya sutā jananī kaśyapaḥ pitā ,
ahamapyutsahe lokānsamastānvoḍhumañjasā.
10. mama api dakṣasya sutā jananī kaśyapaḥ pitā
aham api utsahe lokān samastān voḍhum añjasā
10. My mother is the daughter of Dakṣa, and Kaśyapa is my father. I am also capable of effortlessly supporting all the worlds.
असह्यं सर्वभूतानां ममापि विपुलं बलम् ।
मयापि सुमहत्कर्म कृतं दैतेयविग्रहे ॥११॥
11. asahyaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ mamāpi vipulaṁ balam ,
mayāpi sumahatkarma kṛtaṁ daiteyavigrahe.
11. asahyam sarvabhūtānām mama api vipulam balam
mayā api sumahat karma kṛtam daiteyavigrahe
11. My immense strength is also unbearable for all beings. Moreover, I have accomplished great deeds in the war against the Daityas.
श्रुतश्रीः श्रुतसेनश्च विवस्वान्रोचनामुखः ।
प्रसभः कालकाक्षश्च मयापि दितिजा हताः ॥१२॥
12. śrutaśrīḥ śrutasenaśca vivasvānrocanāmukhaḥ ,
prasabhaḥ kālakākṣaśca mayāpi ditijā hatāḥ.
12. śrutaśrīḥ śrutasenaḥ ca vivasvān rocanāmukhaḥ
prasabhaḥ kālakākṣaḥ ca mayā api ditijāḥ hatāḥ
12. Śrutaśrī, Śrutasena, Vivasvān, Rocanāmukha, Prasabha, and Kālakākṣa - these Daityas were also killed by me.
यत्तु ध्वजस्थानगतो यत्नात्परिचराम्यहम् ।
वहामि चैवानुजं ते तेन मामवमन्यसे ॥१३॥
13. yattu dhvajasthānagato yatnātparicarāmyaham ,
vahāmi caivānujaṁ te tena māmavamanyase.
13. yat tu dhvajasthānagataḥ yatnāt paricarāmi aham
vahāmi ca eva anujam te tena mām avamanyase
13. But because I, stationed on the banner, serve diligently, and I carry your younger brother, you therefore despise me.
कोऽन्यो भारसहो ह्यस्ति कोऽन्योऽस्ति बलवत्तरः ।
मया योऽहं विशिष्टः सन्वहामीमं सबान्धवम् ॥१४॥
14. ko'nyo bhārasaho hyasti ko'nyo'sti balavattaraḥ ,
mayā yo'haṁ viśiṣṭaḥ sanvahāmīmaṁ sabāndhavam.
14. kaḥ anyaḥ bhārasahaḥ hi asti kaḥ anyaḥ asti balavattaraḥ
mayā yaḥ aham viśiṣṭaḥ san vahāmi imam sabāndhavam
14. Who else is capable of bearing such a burden? Who else is more powerful? I, who am distinguished, carry this one along with his kinsmen.
अवज्ञाय तु यत्तेऽहं भोजनाद्व्यपरोपितः ।
तेन मे गौरवं नष्टं त्वत्तश्चास्माच्च वासव ॥१५॥
15. avajñāya tu yatte'haṁ bhojanādvyaparopitaḥ ,
tena me gauravaṁ naṣṭaṁ tvattaścāsmācca vāsava.
15. avajñāya tu yat te aham bhojanāt vyaparopitaḥ tena
me gauravam naṣṭam tvattaḥ ca asmāt ca vāsava
15. But because I was disregarded by you and removed from the meal, my honor (gaurava) was lost, both on account of you and on account of this action, O Vāsava.
अदित्यां य इमे जाता बलविक्रमशालिनः ।
त्वमेषां किल सर्वेषां विशेषाद्बलवत्तरः ॥१६॥
16. adityāṁ ya ime jātā balavikramaśālinaḥ ,
tvameṣāṁ kila sarveṣāṁ viśeṣādbalavattaraḥ.
16. adityām yaḥ ime jātāḥ bala-vikrama-śālinaḥ
tvam eṣām kila sarveṣām viśeṣāt balavattaraḥ
16. You are, indeed, especially more powerful than all of those who were born of Aditi and are endowed with strength and valor.
सोऽहं पक्षैकदेशेन वहामि त्वां गतक्लमः ।
विमृश त्वं शनैस्तात को न्वत्र बलवानिति ॥१७॥
17. so'haṁ pakṣaikadeśena vahāmi tvāṁ gataklamaḥ ,
vimṛśa tvaṁ śanaistāta ko nvatra balavāniti.
17. saḥ aham pakṣa-eka-deśena vahāmi tvām gata-klamaḥ
vimṛśa tvam śanaiḥ tāta kaḥ nu atra balavān iti
17. I, being such a one, carry you, unfatigued, with just a part of one wing. Therefore, dear father, you should carefully consider who among us is truly powerful.
कण्व उवाच ।
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा खगस्योदर्कदारुणम् ।
अक्षोभ्यं क्षोभयंस्तार्क्ष्यमुवाच रथचक्रभृत् ॥१८॥
18. kaṇva uvāca ,
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā khagasyodarkadāruṇam ,
akṣobhyaṁ kṣobhayaṁstārkṣyamuvāca rathacakrabhṛt.
18. kaṇvaḥ uvāca tasya tat vacanam śrutvā khagasya udarka-dāruṇam
akṣobhyam kṣobhayan tārkṣyam uvāca ratha-cakra-bhṛt
18. Kaṇva spoke: Having heard those words of the bird (Garuda), which were terrible in their consequence, the wielder of the chariot wheel (Viṣṇu), disturbing the steadfast (Kaśyapa), spoke to Tārkṣya (Garuda).
गरुत्मन्मन्यसेऽऽत्मानं बलवन्तं सुदुर्बलम् ।
अलमस्मत्समक्षं ते स्तोतुमात्मानमण्डज ॥१९॥
19. garutmanmanyase''tmānaṁ balavantaṁ sudurbalam ,
alamasmatsamakṣaṁ te stotumātmānamaṇḍaja.
19. garutman manyase ātmanam balavantam su-durbalam
alam asmat-samakṣam te stotum ātmanam aṇḍaja
19. O Garuḍa (garutman)! You consider your (ātman) powerful, [yet in truth you are] very weak. Cease praising your (ātman) in my presence, O egg-born one (aṇḍaja)!
त्रैलोक्यमपि मे कृत्स्नमशक्तं देहधारणे ।
अहमेवात्मनात्मानं वहामि त्वां च धारये ॥२०॥
20. trailokyamapi me kṛtsnamaśaktaṁ dehadhāraṇe ,
ahamevātmanātmānaṁ vahāmi tvāṁ ca dhāraye.
20. trailokyam api me kṛtsnam aśaktam dehadhāraṇe
aham eva ātmanā ātmānam vahāmi tvām ca dhāraye
20. Even the entire three worlds are incapable of supporting my body. I alone bear my own self (ātman), and I also sustain you.
इमं तावन्ममैकं त्वं बाहुं सव्येतरं वह ।
यद्येनं धारयस्येकं सफलं ते विकत्थितम् ॥२१॥
21. imaṁ tāvanmamaikaṁ tvaṁ bāhuṁ savyetaraṁ vaha ,
yadyenaṁ dhārayasyekaṁ saphalaṁ te vikatthitam.
21. imam tāvat mama ekam tvam bāhum savyetaram vaha
yadi enam dhārayasi ekam saphalam te vikatthitam
21. For now, you carry this one right arm of mine. If you are able to support this single arm, then your boasting will be successful.
ततः स भगवांस्तस्य स्कन्धे बाहुं समासजत् ।
निपपात स भारार्तो विह्वलो नष्टचेतनः ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ sa bhagavāṁstasya skandhe bāhuṁ samāsajat ,
nipapāta sa bhārārto vihvalo naṣṭacetanaḥ.
22. tataḥ saḥ bhagavān tasya skandhe bāhum samāsajat
nipapāta saḥ bhārārtaḥ vihvalaḥ naṣṭacetanaḥ
22. Thereupon, that venerable one (Bhagavān) placed his arm on his shoulder. He (the other person) then fell down, afflicted by the burden, overwhelmed, and unconscious.
यावान्हि भारः कृत्स्नायाः पृथिव्याः पर्वतैः सह ।
एकस्या देहशाखायास्तावद्भारममन्यत ॥२३॥
23. yāvānhi bhāraḥ kṛtsnāyāḥ pṛthivyāḥ parvataiḥ saha ,
ekasyā dehaśākhāyāstāvadbhāramamanyata.
23. yāvān hi bhāraḥ kṛtsnāyāḥ pṛthivyāḥ parvataiḥ
saha ekasyāḥ dehaśākhāyāḥ tāvat bhāram amanyata
23. Indeed, he perceived that the weight from a single limb of (the Lord's) body was equivalent to the entire burden of the earth along with its mountains.
न त्वेनं पीडयामास बलेन बलवत्तरः ।
ततो हि जीवितं तस्य न व्यनीनशदच्युतः ॥२४॥
24. na tvenaṁ pīḍayāmāsa balena balavattaraḥ ,
tato hi jīvitaṁ tasya na vyanīnaśadacyutaḥ.
24. na tu enam pīḍayāmāsa balena balavattaraḥ
tataḥ hi jīvitam tasya na vyānīnaśat acyutaḥ
24. However, Acyuta (Viṣṇu), who was vastly stronger, did not torment him with force. For that reason, Acyuta did not destroy his life.
विपक्षः स्रस्तकायश्च विचेता विह्वलः खगः ।
मुमोच पत्राणि तदा गुरुभारप्रपीडितः ॥२५॥
25. vipakṣaḥ srastakāyaśca vicetā vihvalaḥ khagaḥ ,
mumoca patrāṇi tadā gurubhāraprapīḍitaḥ.
25. vipakṣaḥ srastakāyaḥ ca vicetāḥ vihvalaḥ
khagaḥ mumoca patrāṇi tadā gurubhāraprapīḍitaḥ
25. The bird (Garuda), now wingless, with a drooping body, distraught and agitated, then dropped his feathers, being severely oppressed by the heavy burden.
स विष्णुं शिरसा पक्षी प्रणम्य विनतासुतः ।
विचेता विह्वलो दीनः किंचिद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२६॥
26. sa viṣṇuṁ śirasā pakṣī praṇamya vinatāsutaḥ ,
vicetā vihvalo dīnaḥ kiṁcidvacanamabravīt.
26. sa viṣṇum śirasā pakṣī praṇamya vinatāsutaḥ
vicetāḥ vihvalaḥ dīnaḥ kiṃcit vacanam abravīt
26. That bird, the son of Vinatā (Garuda), bowed his head to Viṣṇu. Bewildered, distressed, and miserable, he then spoke some words.
भगवँल्लोकसारस्य सदृशेन वपुष्मता ।
भुजेन स्वैरमुक्तेन निष्पिष्टोऽस्मि महीतले ॥२७॥
27. bhagavaँllokasārasya sadṛśena vapuṣmatā ,
bhujena svairamuktena niṣpiṣṭo'smi mahītale.
27. bhagavan lokasārasya sadṛśena vapuṣmatā
bhujena svairamuktena niṣpiṣṭaḥ asmi mahītale
27. Oh Lord (bhagavan)! I have been crushed on the surface of the earth by an arm (of yours) that possesses a form akin to the very essence of the world, effortlessly extended (by you).
क्षन्तुमर्हसि मे देव विह्वलस्याल्पचेतसः ।
बलदाहविदग्धस्य पक्षिणो ध्वजवासिनः ॥२८॥
28. kṣantumarhasi me deva vihvalasyālpacetasaḥ ,
baladāhavidagdhasya pakṣiṇo dhvajavāsinaḥ.
28. kṣantum arhasi me deva vihvalasya alpacetasaḥ
baladāhavidagdhasya pakṣiṇaḥ dhvajavāsinaḥ
28. O Lord (deva), you ought to forgive me, bewildered and small-minded, who is like the bird residing on your banner, scorched by the burning of its own strength.
न विज्ञातं बलं देव मया ते परमं विभो ।
तेन मन्याम्यहं वीर्यमात्मनोऽसदृशं परैः ॥२९॥
29. na vijñātaṁ balaṁ deva mayā te paramaṁ vibho ,
tena manyāmyahaṁ vīryamātmano'sadṛśaṁ paraiḥ.
29. na vijñātam balam deva mayā te paramam vibho
tena manyāmi aham vīryam ātmanaḥ asadṛśam paraiḥ
29. O Lord (deva), O all-pervading (vibhu), your supreme strength was not known by me. Therefore, I considered my own valor (vīrya) to be unequalled by others.
ततश्चक्रे स भगवान्प्रसादं वै गरुत्मतः ।
मैवं भूय इति स्नेहात्तदा चैनमुवाच ह ॥३०॥
30. tataścakre sa bhagavānprasādaṁ vai garutmataḥ ,
maivaṁ bhūya iti snehāttadā cainamuvāca ha.
30. tataḥ cakre sa bhagavān prasādam vai garutmataḥ
mā evam bhūyaḥ iti snehāt tadā ca enam uvāca ha
30. Then that divine Lord (Bhagavān) indeed showed favor to Garuda. And out of affection, he then said to him, "Do not do this again."
तथा त्वमपि गान्धारे यावत्पाण्डुसुतान्रणे ।
नासादयसि तान्वीरांस्तावज्जीवसि पुत्रक ॥३१॥
31. tathā tvamapi gāndhāre yāvatpāṇḍusutānraṇe ,
nāsādayasi tānvīrāṁstāvajjīvasi putraka.
31. tathā tvam api gāndhāre yāvat pāṇḍusutān raṇe
na āsādayasi tān vīrān tāvat jīvasi putraka
31. Similarly, O son of Gandhari, as long as you do not encounter those heroic sons of Pandu in battle, only so long will you live, O dear son.
भीमः प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठो वायुपुत्रो महाबलः ।
धनंजयश्चेन्द्रसुतो न हन्यातां तु कं रणे ॥३२॥
32. bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ śreṣṭho vāyuputro mahābalaḥ ,
dhanaṁjayaścendrasuto na hanyātāṁ tu kaṁ raṇe.
32. bhīmaḥ praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ vāyuputraḥ mahābalaḥ
dhanaṃjayaḥ ca indrasutaḥ na hanyātām tu kam raṇe
32. Bhima, the best among attackers, the son of Vayu and mighty-powered, and Dhananjaya (Arjuna), the son of Indra - whom indeed would these two not kill in battle?
विष्णुर्वायुश्च शक्रश्च धर्मस्तौ चाश्विनावुभौ ।
एते देवास्त्वया केन हेतुना शक्यमीक्षितुम् ॥३३॥
33. viṣṇurvāyuśca śakraśca dharmastau cāśvināvubhau ,
ete devāstvayā kena hetunā śakyamīkṣitum.
33. viṣṇuḥ vāyuḥ ca śakraḥ ca dharmaḥ tau ca aśvinau
ubhau ete devāḥ tvayā kena hetunā śakyam īkṣitum
33. Vishnu, Vayu, and Shakra (Indra), and Dharma, and both of the Ashvins - by what reason could these gods be faced by you?
तदलं ते विरोधेन शमं गच्छ नृपात्मज ।
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन कुलं रक्षितुमर्हसि ॥३४॥
34. tadalaṁ te virodhena śamaṁ gaccha nṛpātmaja ,
vāsudevena tīrthena kulaṁ rakṣitumarhasi.
34. tat alam te virodhena śamam gaccha nṛpātmaja
vāsudevena tīrthena kulam rakṣitum arhasi
34. Therefore, cease your hostility, O prince. You should protect your family by taking refuge in Vasudeva (Krishna).
प्रत्यक्षो ह्यस्य सर्वस्य नारदोऽयं महातपाः ।
माहात्म्यं यत्तदा विष्णोर्योऽयं चक्रगदाधरः ॥३५॥
35. pratyakṣo hyasya sarvasya nārado'yaṁ mahātapāḥ ,
māhātmyaṁ yattadā viṣṇoryo'yaṁ cakragadādharaḥ.
35. pratyakṣaḥ hi asya sarvasya nāradaḥ ayam mahātapāḥ
māhātmyam yat tadā viṣṇoḥ yaḥ ayam cakragadādharaḥ
35. This Narada, who is of great austerity (tapas), is indeed a direct witness to all of this - to that greatness (māhātmya) of Vishnu, who is none other than this one, the wielder of the discus and mace.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
दुर्योधनस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा निःश्वसन्भृकुटीमुखः ।
राधेयमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य जहास स्वनवत्तदा ॥३६॥
36. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
duryodhanastu tacchrutvā niḥśvasanbhṛkuṭīmukhaḥ ,
rādheyamabhisaṁprekṣya jahāsa svanavattadā.
36. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca duryodhanaḥ tu tat śrutvā niḥśvasan
bhṛkuṭīmukhaḥ rādheyam abhisaṃprekṣya jahāsa svanavat tadā
36. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Hearing that, Duryodhana sighed, and with a frowning face, he looked at Karṇa, the son of Rādhā, and then laughed loudly.
कदर्थीकृत्य तद्वाक्यमृषेः कण्वस्य दुर्मतिः ।
ऊरुं गजकराकारं ताडयन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥३७॥
37. kadarthīkṛtya tadvākyamṛṣeḥ kaṇvasya durmatiḥ ,
ūruṁ gajakarākāraṁ tāḍayannidamabravīt.
37. kadarthīkṛtya tat vākyam ṛṣeḥ kaṇvasya durmatiḥ
ūrum gajakarākāram tāḍayan idam abravīt
37. The evil-minded one (Duryodhana), despising that statement of the sage Kaṇva, struck his thigh, which resembled an elephant's trunk, and said this.
यथैवेश्वरसृष्टोऽस्मि यद्भावि या च मे गतिः ।
तथा महर्षे वर्तामि किं प्रलापः करिष्यति ॥३८॥
38. yathaiveśvarasṛṣṭo'smi yadbhāvi yā ca me gatiḥ ,
tathā maharṣe vartāmi kiṁ pralāpaḥ kariṣyati.
38. yathā eva īśvarasṛṣṭaḥ asmi yat bhāvi yā ca me
gatiḥ tathā maharṣe vartāmi kim pralāpaḥ kariṣyati
38. O great sage, I exist just as I was created by God, and according to whatever is destined to happen and whatever my destiny (gati) is. What will mere lamentation achieve?
