जनमेजय उवाच ।
वसमानेषु पार्थेषु वने तस्मिन्महात्मसु ।
धार्तराष्ट्रा महेष्वासाः किमकुर्वन्त सत्तम ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
vasamāneṣu pārtheṣu vane tasminmahātmasu ,
dhārtarāṣṭrā maheṣvāsāḥ kimakurvanta sattama.

1. Janamejaya said, "O best among men, while the great-souled sons of Pritha (Pandavas) were dwelling in that forest, what did the Dhartarashtras, who were great archers, do?"
कर्णो वैकर्तनश्चापि शकुनिश्च महाबलः ।
भीष्मद्रोणकृपाश्चैव तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. karṇo vaikartanaścāpi śakuniśca mahābalaḥ ,
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāścaiva tanme śaṁsitumarhasi.
2. karṇaḥ vaikartanaḥ ca api śakuniḥ ca mahābalaḥ
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāḥ ca eva tat me śaṃsitum arhasi
2. You ought to recount that to me, regarding Karna, the son of Vikartana, and the mighty Shakuni, as well as Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं गतेषु पार्थेषु विसृष्टे च सुयोधने ।
आगते हास्तिनपुरं मोक्षिते पाण्डुनन्दनैः ।
भीष्मोऽब्रवीन्महाराज धार्तराष्ट्रमिदं वचः ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ gateṣu pārtheṣu visṛṣṭe ca suyodhane ,
āgate hāstinapuraṁ mokṣite pāṇḍunandanaiḥ ,
bhīṣmo'bravīnmahārāja dhārtarāṣṭramidaṁ vacaḥ.
3. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam gateṣu pārtheṣu
visṛṣṭe ca suyodhane āgate hāstinapuram
mokṣite pāṇḍunandanaiḥ bhīṣmaḥ
abravīt mahārāja dhārtarāṣṭram idam vacaḥ
3. Vaiśampāyana said: When the Pāṇḍavas had thus departed, and Duryodhana, having been released by the sons of Pāṇḍu and returned to Hastināpura, Bhīṣma spoke these words to the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), O great king.
उक्तं तात मया पूर्वं गच्छतस्ते तपोवनम् ।
गमनं मे न रुचितं तव तन्न कृतं च ते ॥४॥
4. uktaṁ tāta mayā pūrvaṁ gacchataste tapovanam ,
gamanaṁ me na rucitaṁ tava tanna kṛtaṁ ca te.
4. uktam tāta mayā pūrvam gacchataḥ te tapovanam
gamanam me na rucitam tava tat na kṛtam ca te
4. “Dear one, I told you before, when you were going to the hermitage (tapovanam), that your departure was not pleasing to me; yet you did not heed that advice.”
ततः प्राप्तं त्वया वीर ग्रहणं शत्रुभिर्बलात् ।
मोक्षितश्चासि धर्मज्ञैः पाण्डवैर्न च लज्जसे ॥५॥
5. tataḥ prāptaṁ tvayā vīra grahaṇaṁ śatrubhirbalāt ,
mokṣitaścāsi dharmajñaiḥ pāṇḍavairna ca lajjase.
5. tataḥ prāptam tvayā vīra grahaṇam śatrubhiḥ balāt
mokṣitaḥ ca asi dharmajñaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ na ca lajjase
5. “Then, O hero, you were forcibly captured by your enemies. Furthermore, you were liberated by the Pāṇḍavas, who are knowers of (natural) law (dharma), yet you feel no shame.”
प्रत्यक्षं तव गान्धारे ससैन्यस्य विशां पते ।
सूतपुत्रोऽपयाद्भीतो गन्धर्वाणां तदा रणात् ।
क्रोशतस्तव राजेन्द्र ससैन्यस्य नृपात्मज ॥६॥
6. pratyakṣaṁ tava gāndhāre sasainyasya viśāṁ pate ,
sūtaputro'payādbhīto gandharvāṇāṁ tadā raṇāt ,
krośatastava rājendra sasainyasya nṛpātmaja.

viśām pate sūtaputraḥ apayāt bhītaḥ
gandharvāṇām tadā raṇāt krośataḥ

6. “O son of Gāndhārī (Duryodhana), O lord of the people, it was before your very eyes and those of your army that Karṇa, the son of the charioteer, fled in fear from the battle with the Gandharvas at that time, even as you, O best of kings, O son of the king, and your army were crying out.”
दृष्टस्ते विक्रमश्चैव पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
कर्णस्य च महाबाहो सूतपुत्रस्य दुर्मतेः ॥७॥
7. dṛṣṭaste vikramaścaiva pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
karṇasya ca mahābāho sūtaputrasya durmateḥ.
7. dṛṣṭaḥ te vikramaḥ ca eva pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām
karṇasya ca mahābāho sūtaputrasya durmateḥ
7. O mighty-armed one, your valor has been witnessed, as has that of the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, and also the valor of Karṇa, the evil-minded son of the charioteer.
न चापि पादभाक्कर्णः पाण्डवानां नृपोत्तम ।
धनुर्वेदे च शौर्ये च धर्मे वा धर्मवत्सल ॥८॥
8. na cāpi pādabhākkarṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ nṛpottama ,
dhanurvede ca śaurye ca dharme vā dharmavatsala.
8. na ca api pādabhāk karṇaḥ pāṇḍavānām nṛpottama
dhanurvede ca śaurye ca dharme vā dharmavatsala
8. O best of kings, Karṇa is not even a match for the Pāṇḍavas, neither in the science of archery, nor in valor, nor in the practice of natural law (dharma), O you who are devoted to natural law (dharma).
तस्य तेऽहं क्षमं मन्ये पाण्डवैस्तैर्महात्मभिः ।
संधिं संधिविदां श्रेष्ठ कुलस्यास्य विवृद्धये ॥९॥
9. tasya te'haṁ kṣamaṁ manye pāṇḍavaistairmahātmabhiḥ ,
saṁdhiṁ saṁdhividāṁ śreṣṭha kulasyāsya vivṛddhaye.
9. tasya te aham kṣamam manye pāṇḍavaiḥ taiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
sandhim sandhividām śreṣṭha kulasya asya vivṛddhaye
9. O best among those who understand treaties, I consider it fitting for you to make peace with those great-souled Pāṇḍavas, for the prosperity of this family.
एवमुक्तस्तु भीष्मेण धार्तराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
प्रहस्य सहसा राजन्विप्रतस्थे ससौबलः ॥१०॥
10. evamuktastu bhīṣmeṇa dhārtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ ,
prahasya sahasā rājanvipratasthe sasaubalaḥ.
10. evam uktaḥ tu bhīṣmeṇa dhārtarāṣṭraḥ janeśvaraḥ
prahasya sahasā rājan vipratasthe sasaubalaḥ
10. O king, thus addressed by Bhīṣma, the Dhārtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), who was the lord of men, suddenly laughed and then departed along with Śakuni.
तं तु प्रस्थितमाज्ञाय कर्णदुःशासनादयः ।
अनुजग्मुर्महेष्वासा धार्तराष्ट्रं महाबलम् ॥११॥
11. taṁ tu prasthitamājñāya karṇaduḥśāsanādayaḥ ,
anujagmurmaheṣvāsā dhārtarāṣṭraṁ mahābalam.
11. tam tu prasthitam ājñāya karṇaduḥśāsanādayaḥ
anujagmuḥ maheṣvāsāḥ dhārtarāṣṭram mahābalam
11. Recognizing him as having departed, Karṇa, Duḥśāsana, and others, who were great archers, followed the exceedingly mighty son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana).
तांस्तु संप्रस्थितान्दृष्ट्वा भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ।
लज्जया व्रीडितो राजञ्जगाम स्वं निवेशनम् ॥१२॥
12. tāṁstu saṁprasthitāndṛṣṭvā bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ,
lajjayā vrīḍito rājañjagāma svaṁ niveśanam.
12. tān tu samprasthitān dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ
lajjayā vrīḍitaḥ rājan jagāma svam niveśanam
12. But, O King, upon seeing them depart, Bhishma, the grandfather of the Kurus, felt ashamed and embarrassed, and went to his own dwelling.
गते भीष्मे महाराज धार्तराष्ट्रो जनाधिपः ।
पुनरागम्य तं देशममन्त्रयत मन्त्रिभिः ॥१३॥
13. gate bhīṣme mahārāja dhārtarāṣṭro janādhipaḥ ,
punarāgamya taṁ deśamamantrayata mantribhiḥ.
13. gate bhīṣme mahārāja dhārtarāṣṭraḥ janādhipaḥ
punar āgamya tam deśam amantrayata mantribhiḥ
13. O Great King, when Bhishma had departed, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), the lord of men, returned to that place and deliberated with his ministers.
किमस्माकं भवेच्छ्रेयः किं कार्यमवशिष्यते ।
कथं नु सुकृतं च स्यान्मन्त्रयामास भारत ॥१४॥
14. kimasmākaṁ bhavecchreyaḥ kiṁ kāryamavaśiṣyate ,
kathaṁ nu sukṛtaṁ ca syānmantrayāmāsa bhārata.
14. kim asmākam bhavet śreyaḥ kim kāryam avaśiṣyate
katham nu sukṛtam ca syāt mantrayāmāsa bhārata
14. "What would be beneficial for us? What task remains to be done? And how can a virtuous action be accomplished?" Thus, O Bhārata, he deliberated.
कर्ण उवाच ।
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि कौरव ।
श्रुत्वा च तत्तथा सर्वं कर्तुमर्हस्यरिंदम ॥१५॥
15. karṇa uvāca ,
duryodhana nibodhedaṁ yattvā vakṣyāmi kaurava ,
śrutvā ca tattathā sarvaṁ kartumarhasyariṁdama.
15. karṇa uvāca duryodhana nibodha idaṃ yat tvā vakṣyāmi
kaurava śrutvā ca tat tathā sarvaṃ kartum arhasi ariṃdama
15. Karṇa said: "O Duryodhana, O Kaurava, O vanquisher of foes (ariṃdama), understand this that I will tell you. Having heard it, you must carry out everything accordingly."
तवाद्य पृथिवी वीर निःसपत्ना नृपोत्तम ।
तां पालय यथा शक्रो हतशत्रुर्महामनाः ॥१६॥
16. tavādya pṛthivī vīra niḥsapatnā nṛpottama ,
tāṁ pālaya yathā śakro hataśatrurmahāmanāḥ.
16. tava adya pṛthivī vīra niḥsapatnā nṛpottama
tām pālaya yathā śakraḥ hataśatruḥ mahāmanāḥ
16. O hero, O best among kings (nṛpottama), today your earth is without rivals. Rule over it just as the great-souled (mahāmanāḥ) Indra rules, with all his enemies slain (hataśatruḥ).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन कर्णं राजाब्रवीत्पुनः ।
न किंचिद्दुर्लभं तस्य यस्य त्वं पुरुषर्षभ ॥१७॥
17. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu karṇena karṇaṁ rājābravītpunaḥ ,
na kiṁciddurlabhaṁ tasya yasya tvaṁ puruṣarṣabha.
17. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ tu karṇena karṇam rājā abravīt
punaḥ na kiṃcit durlabham tasya yasya tvam puruṣarṣabha
17. Vaiśampāyana said: "When he was thus addressed by Karṇa, the king spoke to Karṇa again: 'O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), for him who has you, nothing is difficult to achieve.'"
सहायश्चानुरक्तश्च मदर्थं च समुद्यतः ।
अभिप्रायस्तु मे कश्चित्तं वै शृणु यथातथम् ॥१८॥
18. sahāyaścānuraktaśca madarthaṁ ca samudyataḥ ,
abhiprāyastu me kaścittaṁ vai śṛṇu yathātatham.
18. sahāyaḥ ca anuraktaḥ ca madartham ca samudyataḥ
abhiprāyaḥ tu me kaścit tam vai śṛṇu yathātatham
18. You are a helper, devoted, and ever ready for my sake. But I have a particular intention, so listen to it truly and accurately (yathātatham).
राजसूयं पाण्डवस्य दृष्ट्वा क्रतुवरं तदा ।
मम स्पृहा समुत्पन्ना तां संपादय सूतज ॥१९॥
19. rājasūyaṁ pāṇḍavasya dṛṣṭvā kratuvaraṁ tadā ,
mama spṛhā samutpannā tāṁ saṁpādaya sūtaja.
19. rājasūyam pāṇḍavasya dṛṣṭvā kratuvaram tadā
mama spṛhā samutpannā tām saṃpādaya sūtaja
19. sūtaja,
tadā pāṇḍavasya kratuvaram rājasūyam dṛṣṭvā mama spṛhā samutpannā.
tām saṃpādaya.
19. O son of a charioteer (sūtaja), having seen that supreme Vedic ritual (kratuvara), the Rājasūya, of the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) then, a desire has arisen in me. Fulfill that (desire)!
एवमुक्तस्ततः कर्णो राजानमिदमब्रवीत् ।
तवाद्य पृथिवीपाला वश्याः सर्वे नृपोत्तम ॥२०॥
20. evamuktastataḥ karṇo rājānamidamabravīt ,
tavādya pṛthivīpālā vaśyāḥ sarve nṛpottama.
20. evam uktaḥ tataḥ karṇaḥ rājānam idam abravīt
tava adya pṛthivīpālāḥ vaśyāḥ sarve nṛpa-uttama
20. When addressed thus, Karṇa then said this to the king, "O best of kings, today all rulers (pṛthivīpālāḥ) are subjugated to you."
आहूयन्तां द्विजवराः संभाराश्च यथाविधि ।
संभ्रियन्तां कुरुश्रेष्ठ यज्ञोपकरणानि च ॥२१॥
21. āhūyantāṁ dvijavarāḥ saṁbhārāśca yathāvidhi ,
saṁbhriyantāṁ kuruśreṣṭha yajñopakaraṇāni ca.
21. āhūyantām dvijavarāḥ saṃbhārāḥ ca yathāvidhi
saṃbhriyantām kuruśreṣṭha yajñopakaraṇāni ca
21. kuruśreṣṭha dvijavarāḥ āhūyantām ca yathāvidhi
saṃbhārāḥ ca yajñopakaraṇāni saṃbhriyantām
21. O best among the Kurus, let excellent Brahmins be invited, and materials be collected according to the prescribed procedure. Let the implements for the Vedic ritual (yajña) also be prepared.
ऋत्विजश्च समाहूता यथोक्तं वेदपारगाः ।
क्रियां कुर्वन्तु ते राजन्यथाशास्त्रमरिंदम ॥२२॥
22. ṛtvijaśca samāhūtā yathoktaṁ vedapāragāḥ ,
kriyāṁ kurvantu te rājanyathāśāstramariṁdama.
22. ṛtvijaḥ ca samāhūtāḥ yathā-uktam veda-pāragāḥ
kriyām kurvantu te rājan yathā-śāstram arim-dama
22. O King (Duryodhana), O subduer of enemies, let the priests who have been summoned, who are expert in the Vedas, perform the ritual (kriyā) as prescribed and according to scriptural injunctions.
बह्वन्नपानसंयुक्तः सुसमृद्धगुणान्वितः ।
प्रवर्ततां महायज्ञस्तवापि भरतर्षभ ॥२३॥
23. bahvannapānasaṁyuktaḥ susamṛddhaguṇānvitaḥ ,
pravartatāṁ mahāyajñastavāpi bharatarṣabha.
23. bahvannapānasaṃyuktaḥ susamṛddhaguṇānvitaḥ
pravartatām mahāyajñaḥ tava api bharatarṣabha
23. bharatarṣabha tava api bahvannapānasaṃyuktaḥ
susamṛddhaguṇānvitaḥ mahāyajñaḥ pravartatām
23. O best of the Bharatas, let this great Vedic ritual (yajña) for you also commence, abundant with food and drink and endowed with excellent and flourishing qualities.
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन धार्तराष्ट्रो विशां पते ।
पुरोहितं समानाय्य इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. evamuktastu karṇena dhārtarāṣṭro viśāṁ pate ,
purohitaṁ samānāyya idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
24. evam uktaḥ tu karṇena dhārtarāṣṭraḥ viśām
pate purohitam samānāyya idam vacanam abravīt
24. O lord of the people, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), thus spoken to by Karṇa, summoned his priest and said these words.
राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं समाप्तवरदक्षिणम् ।
आहर त्वं मम कृते यथान्यायं यथाक्रमम् ॥२५॥
25. rājasūyaṁ kratuśreṣṭhaṁ samāptavaradakṣiṇam ,
āhara tvaṁ mama kṛte yathānyāyaṁ yathākramam.
25. rājasūyam kratuśreṣṭham samāptavaradakṣiṇam
āhara tvam mama kṛte yathānyāyam yathākramam
25. tvam mama kṛte yathānyāyam yathākramam
samāptavaradakṣiṇam kratuśreṣṭham rājasūyam āhara
25. You, for my sake, should perform the Rājasūya (a Vedic ritual), the most excellent of Vedic rituals, completed with abundant and choice gifts, in a just and orderly manner.
स एवमुक्तो नृपतिमुवाच द्विजपुंगवः ।
न स शक्यः क्रतुश्रेष्ठो जीवमाने युधिष्ठिरे ।
आहर्तुं कौरवश्रेष्ठ कुले तव नृपोत्तम ॥२६॥
26. sa evamukto nṛpatimuvāca dvijapuṁgavaḥ ,
na sa śakyaḥ kratuśreṣṭho jīvamāne yudhiṣṭhire ,
āhartuṁ kauravaśreṣṭha kule tava nṛpottama.
26. sa evam uktaḥ nṛpatim uvāca
dvijapuṅgavaḥ na sa śakyaḥ kratuśreṣṭhaḥ
jīvamāne yudhiṣṭhire āhartum
kauravaśreṣṭha kule tava nṛpottama
26. Thus addressed, that foremost Brahmin (dvija) spoke to the king: 'O best of Kauravas, O best of kings, that supreme sacrifice cannot be performed in your lineage (kula) as long as Yudhiṣṭhira lives.'
दीर्घायुर्जीवति च वै धृतराष्ट्रः पिता तव ।
अतश्चापि विरुद्धस्ते क्रतुरेष नृपोत्तम ॥२७॥
27. dīrghāyurjīvati ca vai dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pitā tava ,
ataścāpi viruddhaste kratureṣa nṛpottama.
27. dīrghāyuḥ jīvati ca vai dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pitā tava
ataḥ ca api viruddhaḥ te kratuḥ eṣaḥ nṛpottama
27. nṛpottama tava pitā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ dīrghāyuḥ ca
vai jīvati ataḥ ca api eṣaḥ kratuḥ te viruddhaḥ
27. O best of kings, your father Dhritarashtra indeed lives a long life. Therefore, this Vedic ritual (kratu) is actually incompatible with your current position.
अस्ति त्वन्यन्महत्सत्रं राजसूयसमं प्रभो ।
तेन त्वं यज राजेन्द्र शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥२८॥
28. asti tvanyanmahatsatraṁ rājasūyasamaṁ prabho ,
tena tvaṁ yaja rājendra śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
28. asti tu anyat mahat satram rājasūyasamam prabho
tena tvam yaja rājendra śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
28. prabho rājendra tu anyat mahat rājasūyasamam
satram asti tvam tena yaja ca mama idam vacaḥ śṛṇu
28. O lord, there is another great Vedic ritual (yajña) that is equivalent to a Rājasūya (yajña). O king of kings, perform that ritual (yajña), and listen to these words of mine.
य इमे पृथिवीपालाः करदास्तव पार्थिव ।
ते करान्संप्रयच्छन्तु सुवर्णं च कृताकृतम् ॥२९॥
29. ya ime pṛthivīpālāḥ karadāstava pārthiva ,
te karānsaṁprayacchantu suvarṇaṁ ca kṛtākṛtam.
29. ye ime pṛthivīpālāḥ karadāḥ tava pārthiva | te
karān samprayacchantu suvarṇam ca kṛtākṛtam
29. O king (pārthiva), let these rulers of the earth, who are tributary to you, give taxes and gold, both refined and unrefined.
तेन ते क्रियतामद्य लाङ्गलं नृपसत्तम ।
यज्ञवाटस्य ते भूमिः कृष्यतां तेन भारत ॥३०॥
30. tena te kriyatāmadya lāṅgalaṁ nṛpasattama ,
yajñavāṭasya te bhūmiḥ kṛṣyatāṁ tena bhārata.
30. tena te kriyatām adya lāṅgalam nṛpasattama |
yajñavāṭasya te bhūmiḥ kṛṣyatām tena bhārata
30. O best of kings (nṛpasattama), let a plow be prepared for you today with that (gold). O Bhārata, let the land of your sacrificial enclosure (yajña-vāṭa) be plowed with it.
तत्र यज्ञो नृपश्रेष्ठ प्रभूतान्नः सुसंस्कृतः ।
प्रवर्ततां यथान्यायं सर्वतो ह्यनिवारितः ॥३१॥
31. tatra yajño nṛpaśreṣṭha prabhūtānnaḥ susaṁskṛtaḥ ,
pravartatāṁ yathānyāyaṁ sarvato hyanivāritaḥ.
31. tatra yajñaḥ nṛpaśreṣṭha prabhūtānnaḥ susaṃskṛtaḥ
pravartatām yathānyāyaṃ sarvataḥ hi anivāritaḥ
31. O best of kings, let that well-arranged Vedic ritual (yajña), abundant in food, proceed properly and unimpeded everywhere.
एष ते वैष्णवो नाम यज्ञः सत्पुरुषोचितः ।
एतेन नेष्टवान्कश्चिदृते विष्णुं पुरातनम् ॥३२॥
32. eṣa te vaiṣṇavo nāma yajñaḥ satpuruṣocitaḥ ,
etena neṣṭavānkaścidṛte viṣṇuṁ purātanam.
32. eṣa te vaiṣṇavaḥ nāma yajñaḥ satpuruṣocitaḥ
etena na iṣṭavān kaścit ṛte viṣṇuṃ purātanam
32. This Vedic ritual (yajña), named Vaiṣṇava, is suitable for noble persons. No one has offered sacrifices by means of this (ritual) to anyone other than the primeval Viṣṇu.
राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं स्पर्धत्येष महाक्रतुः ।
अस्माकं रोचते चैव श्रेयश्च तव भारत ।
अविघ्नश्च भवेदेष सफला स्यात्स्पृहा तव ॥३३॥
33. rājasūyaṁ kratuśreṣṭhaṁ spardhatyeṣa mahākratuḥ ,
asmākaṁ rocate caiva śreyaśca tava bhārata ,
avighnaśca bhavedeṣa saphalā syātspṛhā tava.
33. rājasūyam kratuśreṣṭham spardhati
eṣa mahākratuḥ asmākam rocate ca eva
śreyaḥ ca tava bhārata avighnaḥ ca
bhavet eṣa saphalā syāt spṛhā tava
33. bhārata eṣa mahākratuḥ kratuśreṣṭham
rājasūyam spardhati ca asmākam eva
rocate ca tava śreyaḥ ca eṣa avighnaḥ
bhavet tava spṛhā saphalā syāt
33. O Bhārata, this great Vedic ritual (kratu) rivals the Rājasūya (yajña), which is considered the best of rituals (kratu). It is pleasing to us, and it is also auspicious for you. May this be free from obstacles, and may your aspiration be successful.
एवमुक्तस्तु तैर्विप्रैर्धार्तराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
कर्णं च सौबलं चैव भ्रातॄंश्चैवेदमब्रवीत् ॥३४॥
34. evamuktastu tairviprairdhārtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ,
karṇaṁ ca saubalaṁ caiva bhrātṝṁścaivedamabravīt.
34. evam uktaḥ tu taiḥ vipraiḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpatiḥ
karṇaṃ ca saubalaṃ ca eva bhrātṝn ca eva idam abravīt
34. Thus addressed by those brāhmaṇas (vipra), the king Dhārtarāṣṭra then spoke this to Karṇa, Saubala, and his brothers.
रोचते मे वचः कृत्स्नं ब्राह्मणानां न संशयः ।
रोचते यदि युष्माकं तन्मा प्रब्रूत माचिरम् ॥३५॥
35. rocate me vacaḥ kṛtsnaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ na saṁśayaḥ ,
rocate yadi yuṣmākaṁ tanmā prabrūta māciram.
35. rocate me vacaḥ kṛtsnam brāhmaṇānām na saṃśayaḥ
rocate yadi yuṣmākam tat mām prabrūta mā ciram
35. The complete advice of the brahmins certainly pleases me. If it also pleases you, then tell me immediately, without delay.
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे तथेत्यूचुर्नराधिपम् ।
संदिदेश ततो राजा व्यापारस्थान्यथाक्रमम् ॥३६॥
36. evamuktāstu te sarve tathetyūcurnarādhipam ,
saṁdideśa tato rājā vyāpārasthānyathākramam.
36. evam uktāḥ tu te sarve tathā iti ūcuḥ narādhipam
saṃdideśa tataḥ rājā vyāpārasthān yathākramam
36. When addressed in this manner, all of them replied to the king, saying, "So be it." Then the king assigned them their tasks in proper order.
हलस्य करणे चापि व्यादिष्टाः सर्वशिल्पिनः ।
यथोक्तं च नृपश्रेष्ठ कृतं सर्वं यथाक्रमम् ॥३७॥
37. halasya karaṇe cāpi vyādiṣṭāḥ sarvaśilpinaḥ ,
yathoktaṁ ca nṛpaśreṣṭha kṛtaṁ sarvaṁ yathākramam.
37. halasya karaṇe ca api vyādiṣṭāḥ sarvaśilpinaḥ
yathā uktam ca nṛpaśreṣṭha kṛtam sarvam yathākramam
37. Furthermore, all the craftsmen were instructed regarding the construction of the plow. O best of kings, everything was then accomplished precisely as commanded and in proper sequence.
