सा निष्क्रमन्ती नगराच्चिन्तयामास भारत ।
पृथिव्यां नास्ति युवतिर्विषमस्थतरा मया ।
बान्धवैर्विप्रहीनास्मि शाल्वेन च निराकृता ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sā niṣkramantī nagarāccintayāmāsa bhārata ,
pṛthivyāṁ nāsti yuvatirviṣamasthatarā mayā ,
bāndhavairviprahīnāsmi śālvena ca nirākṛtā.

cintayāmāsa bhārata pṛthivyām na asti

sā nagarāt niṣkramantī cintayāmāsa: "pṛthivyām mayā viṣamasthatarā yuvatiḥ na asti.
bāndhavaiḥ viprahīnā asmi ca śālvena nirākṛtā (asmi).
"
1. Bhishma spoke: 'O Bharata, as she was leaving the city, she reflected, "There is no young woman on earth more tragically situated than I. I am abandoned by my kin and rejected by Salva."'
न च शक्यं पुनर्गन्तुं मया वारणसाह्वयम् ।
अनुज्ञातास्मि भीष्मेण शाल्वमुद्दिश्य कारणम् ॥२॥
2. na ca śakyaṁ punargantuṁ mayā vāraṇasāhvayam ,
anujñātāsmi bhīṣmeṇa śālvamuddiśya kāraṇam.
2. na ca śakyam punaḥ gantum mayā vāraṇasāhvayam
anujñātā asmi bhīṣmeṇa śālvam uddiśya kāraṇam
2. ca mayā vāraṇasāhvayam punaḥ gantum na śakyam.
bhīṣmeṇa kāraṇam śālvam uddiśya anujñātā asmi.
2. It is not possible for me to return to Vārāṇasī, as I was permitted by Bhishma to go to Salva for a specific reason.
किं नु गर्हाम्यथात्मानमथ भीष्मं दुरासदम् ।
आहोस्वित्पितरं मूढं यो मेऽकार्षीत्स्वयंवरम् ॥३॥
3. kiṁ nu garhāmyathātmānamatha bhīṣmaṁ durāsadam ,
āhosvitpitaraṁ mūḍhaṁ yo me'kārṣītsvayaṁvaram.
3. kim nu garhāmi atha ātmānam atha bhīṣmam durāsadam
āhosvit pitaram mūḍham yaḥ me akārṣīt svayaṃvaram
3. kim nu aham garhāmi? atha ātmānam,
atha durāsadam bhīṣmam,
āhosvit yaḥ me svayaṃvaram akārṣīt tam mūḍham pitaram?
3. Whom should I blame then? Myself, or the unassailable Bhishma, or perhaps my foolish father who arranged my self-choice marriage (svayaṃvara)?
ममायं स्वकृतो दोषो याहं भीष्मरथात्तदा ।
प्रवृत्ते वैशसे युद्धे शाल्वार्थं नापतं पुरा ।
तस्येयं फलनिर्वृत्तिर्यदापन्नास्मि मूढवत् ॥४॥
4. mamāyaṁ svakṛto doṣo yāhaṁ bhīṣmarathāttadā ,
pravṛtte vaiśase yuddhe śālvārthaṁ nāpataṁ purā ,
tasyeyaṁ phalanirvṛttiryadāpannāsmi mūḍhavat.
4. mama ayam svakṛtaḥ doṣaḥ yā aham
bhīṣmarathāt tadā pravṛtte vaiśase yuddhe
śālvārtham na āpatam purā tasya iyam
phalanirvṛttiḥ yadā āpannā asmi mūḍhavat
4. ayam mama svakṛtaḥ doṣaḥ yā aham tadā pravṛtte vaiśase yuddhe bhīṣmarathāt śālvārtham purā na āpatam.
iyam tasya phalanirvṛttiḥ,
yadā asmi mūḍhavat āpannā.
4. This fault is my own, for I did not depart from Bhishma's chariot then, during that destructive war, for the sake of Salva. This current outcome is the fruition of those consequences, as I have become afflicted like a fool.
धिग्भीष्मं धिक्च मे मन्दं पितरं मूढचेतसम् ।
येनाहं वीर्यशुल्केन पण्यस्त्रीवत्प्रवेरिता ॥५॥
5. dhigbhīṣmaṁ dhikca me mandaṁ pitaraṁ mūḍhacetasam ,
yenāhaṁ vīryaśulkena paṇyastrīvatpraveritā.
5. dhik bhīṣmam dhik ca me mandam pitaram mūḍhacetasam
yena aham vīryaśulkena paṇyastrīvat praveritā
5. dhik bhīṣmam,
ca dhik me mandam mūḍhacetasam pitaram,
yena aham vīryaśulkena paṇyastrīvat praveritā.
5. Woe to Bhishma! And woe to my dull-witted, foolish father, by whom I was given away like a purchased woman (paṇyastrī) for a bridal price of valor (vīryaśulka)!
धिङ्मां धिक्शाल्वराजानं धिग्धातारमथापि च ।
येषां दुर्नीतभावेन प्राप्तास्म्यापदमुत्तमाम् ॥६॥
6. dhiṅmāṁ dhikśālvarājānaṁ dhigdhātāramathāpi ca ,
yeṣāṁ durnītabhāvena prāptāsmyāpadamuttamām.
6. dhik mām dhik śālvarājānam dhik dhātāram atha api
ca yeṣām durnītabhāvena prāptā asmi āpadam uttamām
6. dhik mām,
dhik śālvarājānam,
atha api ca dhik dhātāram.
yeṣām durnītabhāvena aham uttamām āpadam prāptā asmi.
6. Woe to me! Woe to King Salva! And woe even to the Creator (Dhātā)! For it is through their ill-conduct that I have obtained this supreme calamity.
सर्वथा भागधेयानि स्वानि प्राप्नोति मानवः ।
अनयस्यास्य तु मुखं भीष्मः शांतनवो मम ॥७॥
7. sarvathā bhāgadheyāni svāni prāpnoti mānavaḥ ,
anayasyāsya tu mukhaṁ bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo mama.
7. sarvathā bhāgadheyāni svāni prāpnoti mānavaḥ
anayasya asya tu mukham bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ mama
7. mānavaḥ svāni bhāgadheyāni sarvathā prāpnoti tu
mama asya anayasya mukham śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ
7. A human being always obtains their own destined share. But for me, the primary cause of this misfortune is Bhishma, the son of Shantanu.
सा भीष्मे प्रतिकर्तव्यमहं पश्यामि सांप्रतम् ।
तपसा वा युधा वापि दुःखहेतुः स मे मतः ।
को नु भीष्मं युधा जेतुमुत्सहेत महीपतिः ॥८॥
8. sā bhīṣme pratikartavyamahaṁ paśyāmi sāṁpratam ,
tapasā vā yudhā vāpi duḥkhahetuḥ sa me mataḥ ,
ko nu bhīṣmaṁ yudhā jetumutsaheta mahīpatiḥ.
8. sā bhīṣme pratikartavyam aham paśyāmi
sāmpratam tapasā vā yudhā vā api
duḥkhahetuḥ saḥ me mataḥ kaḥ nu
bhīṣmam yudhā jetum utsaheta mahīpatiḥ
8. aham sāmpratam bhīṣme pratikartavyam
paśyāmi saḥ tapasā vā yudhā vā
api me duḥkhahetuḥ mataḥ kaḥ mahīpatiḥ
nu bhīṣmam yudhā jetum utsaheta
8. I now see that I must retaliate against Bhishma. He is considered by me to be the cause of my sorrow, (and this retaliation must be achieved) either through penance (tapas) or through battle. What king, indeed, would dare to conquer Bhishma in battle?
एवं सा परिनिश्चित्य जगाम नगराद्बहिः ।
आश्रमं पुण्यशीलानां तापसानां महात्मनाम् ।
ततस्तामवसद्रात्रिं तापसैः परिवारिता ॥९॥
9. evaṁ sā pariniścitya jagāma nagarādbahiḥ ,
āśramaṁ puṇyaśīlānāṁ tāpasānāṁ mahātmanām ,
tatastāmavasadrātriṁ tāpasaiḥ parivāritā.
9. evam sā pariniścitya jagāma
nagarāt bahiḥ āśramam puṇyaśīlānām
tāpasānām mahātmanām tataḥ tām
avasat rātrim tāpasaiḥ parivāritā
9. evam sā pariniścitya nagarāt
bahiḥ puṇyaśīlānām tāpasānām
mahātmanām āśramam jagāma tataḥ
tāpasaiḥ parivāritā tām rātrim avasat
9. Having thus firmly resolved, she went outside the city to the hermitage (āśrama) of noble-souled (mahātman) ascetics (tāpasa) known for their virtuous conduct. There, surrounded by the ascetics, she spent the night.
आचख्यौ च यथा वृत्तं सर्वमात्मनि भारत ।
विस्तरेण महाबाहो निखिलेन शुचिस्मिता ।
हरणं च विसर्गं च शाल्वेन च विसर्जनम् ॥१०॥
10. ācakhyau ca yathā vṛttaṁ sarvamātmani bhārata ,
vistareṇa mahābāho nikhilena śucismitā ,
haraṇaṁ ca visargaṁ ca śālvena ca visarjanam.
10. ācakhyau ca yathā vṛttam sarvam
ātmani bhārata vistareṇa mahābāho
nikhilena śucismitā haraṇam ca
visargam ca śālvena ca visarjanam
10. ca bhārata mahābāho śucismitā
ātmani yathā sarvam vṛttam vistareṇa
nikhilena ācakhyau ca haraṇam
ca visargam ca śālvena visarjanam
10. And she narrated everything that had happened regarding herself, O Bharata, O mighty-armed one, O pure-smiling one, in full detail. (Specifically,) the abduction, her rejection, and her subsequent sending away by Salva.
ततस्तत्र महानासीद्ब्राह्मणः संशितव्रतः ।
शैखावत्यस्तपोवृद्धः शास्त्रे चारण्यके गुरुः ॥११॥
11. tatastatra mahānāsīdbrāhmaṇaḥ saṁśitavrataḥ ,
śaikhāvatyastapovṛddhaḥ śāstre cāraṇyake guruḥ.
11. tataḥ tatra mahān āsīt brāhmaṇaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ
śaikhāvatyaḥ tapovṛddhaḥ śāstre ca āraṇyake guruḥ
11. tataḥ tatra śaikhāvatyaḥ mahān brāhmaṇaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ
tapovṛddhaḥ ca śāstre āraṇyake guruḥ āsīt
11. Then, there was a great Brahmin named Shaikhāvatya. He was steadfast in his vows, advanced in asceticism (tapas), and an expert (guru) in the scriptures and the Āraṇyakas.
आर्तां तामाह स मुनिः शैखावत्यो महातपाः ।
निःश्वसन्तीं सतीं बालां दुःखशोकपरायणाम् ॥१२॥
12. ārtāṁ tāmāha sa muniḥ śaikhāvatyo mahātapāḥ ,
niḥśvasantīṁ satīṁ bālāṁ duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇām.
12. ārtām tām āha saḥ muniḥ śaikhāvatyaḥ mahātapaḥ
niḥśvasantīm satīm bālām duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇām
12. saḥ mahātapaḥ muniḥ śaikhāvatyaḥ ārtām niḥśvasantīm
duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇām satīm tām bālām āha
12. That sage Shaikhāvatya, who performed great asceticism (tapas), spoke to the distressed young girl who was sighing and utterly overcome by sorrow and grief.
एवं गते किं नु भद्रे शक्यं कर्तुं तपस्विभिः ।
आश्रमस्थैर्महाभागैस्तपोनित्यैर्महात्मभिः ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ gate kiṁ nu bhadre śakyaṁ kartuṁ tapasvibhiḥ ,
āśramasthairmahābhāgaistaponityairmahātmabhiḥ.
13. evam gate kim nu bhadre śakyam kartum tapasvibhiḥ
āśramasthaiḥ mahābhāgaiḥ taponityaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
13. bhadre evam gate tapasvibhiḥ āśramasthaiḥ mahābhāgaiḥ
taponityaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ kartum kim nu śakyam
13. O good lady (bhadre), what indeed can ascetics (tapasvin) do in such a situation – we who reside in hermitages (āśrama), are greatly fortunate, are always engaged in asceticism (tapas), and are great souls (ātman)?
सा त्वेनमब्रवीद्राजन्क्रियतां मदनुग्रहः ।
प्रव्राजितुमिहेच्छामि तपस्तप्स्यामि दुश्चरम् ॥१४॥
14. sā tvenamabravīdrājankriyatāṁ madanugrahaḥ ,
pravrājitumihecchāmi tapastapsyāmi duścaram.
14. sā tu enam abravīt rājan kriyatām madanugrahaḥ
pravrājitum iha icchāmi tapaḥ tapsyāmi duścaram
14. sā tu enam abravīt rājan mat anugrahaḥ kriyatām
iha pravrājitum icchāmi duścaram tapaḥ tapsyāmi
14. But she said to him, 'O King, please show me this favor: I wish to become an ascetic (pravrājita) here, and I will perform difficult asceticism (tapas).'
मयैवैतानि कर्माणि पूर्वदेहेषु मूढया ।
कृतानि नूनं पापानि तेषामेतत्फलं ध्रुवम् ॥१५॥
15. mayaivaitāni karmāṇi pūrvadeheṣu mūḍhayā ,
kṛtāni nūnaṁ pāpāni teṣāmetatphalaṁ dhruvam.
15. mayā eva etāni karmāṇi pūrva-deheṣu mūḍhayā
kṛtāni nūnaṃ pāpāni teṣām etat phalaṃ dhruvam
15. mūḍhayā mayā eva pūrva-deheṣu etāni pāpāni
karmāṇi nūnaṃ kṛtāni teṣām etat phalaṃ dhruvam
15. Undoubtedly, these sinful actions (karma) were foolishly performed by me in previous bodies. This is certainly the inevitable fruit (phala) of those actions.
नोत्सहेयं पुनर्गन्तुं स्वजनं प्रति तापसाः ।
प्रत्याख्याता निरानन्दा शाल्वेन च निराकृता ॥१६॥
16. notsaheyaṁ punargantuṁ svajanaṁ prati tāpasāḥ ,
pratyākhyātā nirānandā śālvena ca nirākṛtā.
16. na utsaheyam punaḥ gantuṃ svajanam prati tāpasāḥ
pratyākhyātā niraanandā śālvena ca nirākṛtā
16. tāpasāḥ punaḥ svajanam prati gantuṃ na utsaheyam
pratyākhyātā nirānandā ca śālvena nirākṛtā
16. O ascetics, I cannot bear to return to my own people (svajana) again. I have been rejected and rendered joyless, and cast out by Śālva.
उपदिष्टमिहेच्छामि तापस्यं वीतकल्मषाः ।
युष्माभिर्देवसंकाशाः कृपा भवतु वो मयि ॥१७॥
17. upadiṣṭamihecchāmi tāpasyaṁ vītakalmaṣāḥ ,
yuṣmābhirdevasaṁkāśāḥ kṛpā bhavatu vo mayi.
17. upadiṣṭam iha icchāmi tāpasyaṃ vīta-kalmaṣāḥ
yuṣmābhiḥ deva-saṃkāśāḥ kṛpā bhavatu vaḥ mayi
17. vītakalmaṣāḥ devasaṃkāśāḥ yuṣmābhiḥ iha tāpasyaṃ
upadiṣṭam icchāmi vaḥ mayi kṛpā bhavatu
17. O sinless ones (vītakalmaṣāḥ), I desire instruction in asceticism (tāpasya) here. O god-like ones (devasaṃkāśāḥ), may your compassion (kṛpā) be upon me.
स तामाश्वासयत्कन्यां दृष्टान्तागमहेतुभिः ।
सान्त्वयामास कार्यं च प्रतिजज्ञे द्विजैः सह ॥१८॥
18. sa tāmāśvāsayatkanyāṁ dṛṣṭāntāgamahetubhiḥ ,
sāntvayāmāsa kāryaṁ ca pratijajñe dvijaiḥ saha.
18. saḥ tām āśvāsayat kanyām dṛṣṭānta-āgama-hetubhiḥ
sāntvayāmāsa kāryaṃ ca pratijajñe dvijaiḥ saha
18. saḥ tām kanyām dṛṣṭānta-āgama-hetubhiḥ āśvāsayat
sāntvayāmāsa ca dvijaiḥ saha kāryaṃ pratijajñe
18. He comforted and consoled that maiden with examples, scriptural injunctions (āgama), and logical reasons. And he promised to undertake her cause (kārya) along with the brahmins (dvija).
