राम उवाच ।
प्रत्यक्षमेतल्लोकानां सर्वेषामेव भामिनि ।
यथा मया परं शक्त्या कृतं वै पौरुषं महत् ॥१॥
1. rāma uvāca ,
pratyakṣametallokānāṁ sarveṣāmeva bhāmini ,
yathā mayā paraṁ śaktyā kṛtaṁ vai pauruṣaṁ mahat.

1. Rama said: 'O radiant one, it is indeed evident to all people how I performed a great feat of valor (pauruṣa) with utmost strength (śakti).'
न चैव युधि शक्नोमि भीष्मं शस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
विशेषयितुमत्यर्थमुत्तमास्त्राणि दर्शयन् ॥२॥
2. na caiva yudhi śaknomi bhīṣmaṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
viśeṣayitumatyarthamuttamāstrāṇi darśayan.
2. na ca eva yudhi śaknomi bhīṣmam śastrabṛtām varam
viśeṣayitum atyartham uttama-astrāṇi darśayan
2. ca eva aham yudhi śastrabṛtām varam bhīṣmam,
atyartham viśeṣayitum na śaknomi,
uttama-astrāṇi darśayan (api).
2. And indeed, I am unable in battle to significantly overpower Bhishma, who is the best among weapon-bearers, even by displaying my supreme weapons.
एषा मे परमा शक्तिरेतन्मे परमं बलम् ।
यथेष्टं गम्यतां भद्रे किमन्यद्वा करोमि ते ॥३॥
3. eṣā me paramā śaktiretanme paramaṁ balam ,
yatheṣṭaṁ gamyatāṁ bhadre kimanyadvā karomi te.
3. eṣā me paramā śaktiḥ etat me paramam balam yathā
iṣṭam gamyatām bhadre kim anyat vā karomi te
3. O bhadre,
eṣā me paramā śaktiḥ,
etat me paramam balam.
yathā iṣṭam gamyatām.
vā kim anyat te karomi?
3. This is my supreme power (śakti), and this is my supreme strength. Go as you wish, O gentle lady; what else can I do for you?
भीष्ममेव प्रपद्यस्व न तेऽन्या विद्यते गतिः ।
निर्जितो ह्यस्मि भीष्मेण महास्त्राणि प्रमुञ्चता ॥४॥
4. bhīṣmameva prapadyasva na te'nyā vidyate gatiḥ ,
nirjito hyasmi bhīṣmeṇa mahāstrāṇi pramuñcatā.
4. bhīṣmam eva prapadyasva na te anyā vidyate gatiḥ
nirjitaḥ hi asmi bhīṣmeṇa mahāstrāṇi pramuñcatā
4. te na anyā gatiḥ vidyate.
eva bhīṣmam prapadyasva.
hi asmi nirjitaḥ,
bhīṣmeṇa mahāstrāṇi pramuñcatā.
4. You should seek refuge only with Bhishma; there is no other course of action for you. For I have indeed been defeated by Bhishma, who discharges powerful weapons.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततो रामो विनिःश्वस्य महामनाः ।
तूष्णीमासीत्तदा कन्या प्रोवाच भृगुनन्दनम् ॥५॥
5. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktvā tato rāmo viniḥśvasya mahāmanāḥ ,
tūṣṇīmāsīttadā kanyā provāca bhṛgunandanam.
5. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tataḥ rāmaḥ viniḥśvasya
mahāmanāḥ tūṣṇīm āsīt tadā kanyā provāca bhṛgunandanam
5. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
rāmaḥ evam uktvā,
tataḥ,
mahāmanāḥ viniḥśvasya,
tūṣṇīm āsīt.
tadā kanyā bhṛgunandanam provāca.
5. Bhishma said: Having spoken thus, the great-souled Rama then sighed deeply and fell silent. Thereupon, the maiden spoke to the son of Bhrigu.
भगवन्नेवमेवैतद्यथाह भगवांस्तथा ।
अजेयो युधि भीष्मोऽयमपि देवैरुदारधीः ॥६॥
6. bhagavannevamevaitadyathāha bhagavāṁstathā ,
ajeyo yudhi bhīṣmo'yamapi devairudāradhīḥ.
6. bhagavan evam eva etat yathā āha bhagavān tathā
ajeyaḥ yudhi bhīṣmaḥ ayam api devaiḥ udāradhīḥ
6. O bhagavan,
etat evam eva.
yathā bhagavān āha,
tathā.
ayam udāradhīḥ bhīṣmaḥ yudhi devaiḥ api ajeyaḥ.
6. O revered one, this is indeed exactly as your revered self has stated. This noble-minded Bhishma is unconquerable in battle, even by the gods.
यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं मम कार्यं कृतं त्वया ।
अनिधाय रणे वीर्यमस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥७॥
7. yathāśakti yathotsāhaṁ mama kāryaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā ,
anidhāya raṇe vīryamastrāṇi vividhāni ca.
7. yathāśakti yathotsāhaṃ mama kāryam kṛtam tvayā
anidhāya raṇe vīryam astrāṇi vividhāni ca
7. tvayā mama kāryam yathāśakti yathotsāham kṛtam,
rane vīryam vividhāni ca astrāṇi anidhāya
7. You performed my task according to your capacity and enthusiasm, but without employing your valor or various weapons in battle.
न चैष शक्यते युद्धे विशेषयितुमन्ततः ।
न चाहमेनं यास्यामि पुनर्भीष्मं कथंचन ॥८॥
8. na caiṣa śakyate yuddhe viśeṣayitumantataḥ ,
na cāhamenaṁ yāsyāmi punarbhīṣmaṁ kathaṁcana.
8. na ca eṣa śakyate yuddhe viśeṣayitum antataḥ |
na ca aham enam yāsyāmi punaḥ bhīṣmam kathaṃcana
8. antataḥ ca eṣaḥ yuddhe viśeṣayitum na śakyate ca
aham enam bhīṣmam punaḥ kathaṃcana na yāsyāmi
8. And he cannot ultimately be surpassed in battle. Nor will I ever go to fight this Bhishma again by any means.
गमिष्यामि तु तत्राहं यत्र भीष्मं तपोधन ।
समरे पातयिष्यामि स्वयमेव भृगूद्वह ॥९॥
9. gamiṣyāmi tu tatrāhaṁ yatra bhīṣmaṁ tapodhana ,
samare pātayiṣyāmi svayameva bhṛgūdvaha.
9. gamiṣyāmi tu tatra aham yatra bhīṣmam tapodhana
| samare pātayiṣyāmi svayam eva bhṛgūdvaha
9. tu aham tatra gamiṣyāmi,
yatra,
tapodhana,
bhṛgūdvaha,
(aham) svayam eva bhīṣmam samare pātayiṣyāmi
9. But I will go to that place, O treasure of austerity (tapodhana), where I myself will strike down Bhishma in battle, O descendant of Bhrigu (bhṛgūdvaha).
एवमुक्त्वा ययौ कन्या रोषव्याकुललोचना ।
तपसे धृतसंकल्पा मम चिन्तयती वधम् ॥१०॥
10. evamuktvā yayau kanyā roṣavyākulalocanā ,
tapase dhṛtasaṁkalpā mama cintayatī vadham.
10. evam uktvā yayau kanyā roṣavyākulalocanā |
tapase dhṛtasaṅkalpā mama cintayatī vadham
10. evam uktvā roṣavyākulalocanā kanyā tapase
dhṛtasaṅkalpā mama vadham cintayatī yayau
10. Having spoken thus, the maiden departed, her eyes agitated by anger, having taken a firm resolve for austerity (tapas), and contemplating my demise.
ततो महेन्द्रं सह तैर्मुनिभिर्भृगुसत्तमः ।
यथागतं ययौ रामो मामुपामन्त्र्य भारत ॥११॥
11. tato mahendraṁ saha tairmunibhirbhṛgusattamaḥ ,
yathāgataṁ yayau rāmo māmupāmantrya bhārata.
11. tataḥ mahendram saha taiḥ munibhiḥ bhṛgusattamaḥ
yathāgatam yayau rāmaḥ mām upāmantrya bhārata
11. bhārata tataḥ bhṛgusattamaḥ rāmaḥ mām upāmantrya
taiḥ munibhiḥ saha yathāgatam mahendram yayau
11. O Bhārata, then Rāma, the best of the Bhṛgus, having bid me farewell, returned with those sages to Mahendra mountain, the way he had come.
ततोऽहं रथमारुह्य स्तूयमानो द्विजातिभिः ।
प्रविश्य नगरं मात्रे सत्यवत्यै न्यवेदयम् ।
यथावृत्तं महाराज सा च मां प्रत्यनन्दत ॥१२॥
12. tato'haṁ rathamāruhya stūyamāno dvijātibhiḥ ,
praviśya nagaraṁ mātre satyavatyai nyavedayam ,
yathāvṛttaṁ mahārāja sā ca māṁ pratyanandata.
12. tataḥ aham ratham āruhya stūyamānaḥ
dvijātibhiḥ praviśya nagaram mātre
satyavatyai nyavedayam yathāvṛttam
mahārāja sā ca mām pratyanandata
12. mahārāja tataḥ aham ratham āruhya
dvijātibhiḥ stūyamānaḥ nagaram
praviśya mātre satyavatyai yathāvṛttam
nyavedayam ca sā mām pratyanandata
12. O great king, then I, having mounted my chariot and being praised by the twice-born (dvijāti), entered the city and reported to my mother Satyavatī exactly what had happened. And she, in turn, rejoiced at my return.
पुरुषांश्चादिशं प्राज्ञान्कन्यावृत्तान्तकर्मणि ।
दिवसे दिवसे ह्यस्या गतजल्पितचेष्टितम् ।
प्रत्याहरंश्च मे युक्ताः स्थिताः प्रियहिते मम ॥१३॥
13. puruṣāṁścādiśaṁ prājñānkanyāvṛttāntakarmaṇi ,
divase divase hyasyā gatajalpitaceṣṭitam ,
pratyāharaṁśca me yuktāḥ sthitāḥ priyahite mama.
13. puruṣān ca ādiśam prājñān
kanyāvṛttāntakarmaṇi divase divase hi asyāḥ
gatajalpitaceṣṭitam pratyāharan
ca me yuktāḥ sthitāḥ priyahite mama
13. ca aham prājñān puruṣān kanyāvṛttāntakarmaṇi
ādiśam hi me yuktāḥ sthitāḥ
divase divase asyāḥ gatajalpitaceṣṭitam
pratyāharan ca mama priyahite
13. And I appointed intelligent men for the task of monitoring the maiden's activities. Indeed, day by day, they diligently gathered and reported to me all her movements, speech, and actions, remaining committed to my welfare.
यदैव हि वनं प्रायात्कन्या सा तपसे धृता ।
तदैव व्यथितो दीनो गतचेता इवाभवम् ॥१४॥
14. yadaiva hi vanaṁ prāyātkanyā sā tapase dhṛtā ,
tadaiva vyathito dīno gatacetā ivābhavam.
14. yadā eva hi vanam prāyāt kanyā sā tapase dhṛtā
tadā eva vyathitaḥ dīnaḥ gatacetāḥ iva abhavam
14. hi yadā eva sā kanyā tapase dhṛtā vanam prāyāt tadā
eva aham vyathitaḥ dīnaḥ gatacetāḥ iva abhavam
14. Indeed, as soon as that maiden, dedicated to asceticism (tapas), departed for the forest, at that very moment I became distressed, miserable, and as if I had lost my senses.
न हि मां क्षत्रियः कश्चिद्वीर्येण विजयेद्युधि ।
ऋते ब्रह्मविदस्तात तपसा संशितव्रतात् ॥१५॥
15. na hi māṁ kṣatriyaḥ kaścidvīryeṇa vijayedyudhi ,
ṛte brahmavidastāta tapasā saṁśitavratāt.
15. na hi mām kṣatriyaḥ kaścit vīryeṇa vijayet
yudhi ṛte brahmavidaḥ tāta tapasā saṃśitavratāt
15. tāta,
hi,
kaścit kṣatriyaḥ vīryeṇa yudhi mām na vijayet,
ṛte brahmavidaḥ tapasā saṃśitavratāt.
15. Indeed, dear one, no warrior (kṣatriya) could conquer me in battle through valor, except for one who knows Brahman (brahman) and whose resolve is intensified by asceticism (tapas).
अपि चैतन्मया राजन्नारदेऽपि निवेदितम् ।
व्यासे चैव भयात्कार्यं तौ चोभौ मामवोचताम् ॥१६॥
16. api caitanmayā rājannārade'pi niveditam ,
vyāse caiva bhayātkāryaṁ tau cobhau māmavocatām.
16. api ca etat mayā rājan nārade api niveditam vyāse
ca eva bhayāt kāryam tau ca ubhau mām avocatām
16. rājan,
api ca,

16. Moreover, O King, this was conveyed by me to Nārada and also to Vyāsa. This matter (kārya) was prompted by fear, and both of them spoke to me.
न विषादस्त्वया कार्यो भीष्म काशिसुतां प्रति ।
दैवं पुरुषकारेण को निवर्तितुमुत्सहेत् ॥१७॥
17. na viṣādastvayā kāryo bhīṣma kāśisutāṁ prati ,
daivaṁ puruṣakāreṇa ko nivartitumutsahet.
17. na viṣādaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ bhīṣma kāśisutām prati
daivam puruṣakāreṇa kaḥ nivartitum utsahet
17. bhīṣma,
tvayā kāśisutām prati viṣādaḥ na kāryaḥ.
kaḥ puruṣakāreṇa daivam nivartitum utsahet?
17. O Bhīṣma, you should not feel dejection regarding the princess of Kāśi. Who would dare to avert destiny (daivam) through human effort (puruṣakāra)?
सा तु कन्या महाराज प्रविश्याश्रममण्डलम् ।
यमुनातीरमाश्रित्य तपस्तेपेऽतिमानुषम् ॥१८॥
18. sā tu kanyā mahārāja praviśyāśramamaṇḍalam ,
yamunātīramāśritya tapastepe'timānuṣam.
18. sā tu kanyā mahārāja praviśya āśramamaṇḍalam
yamunātīram āśritya tapas tepe atimānuṣam
18. mahārāja,
tu,
sā kanyā,
āśramamaṇḍalam praviśya,
yamunātīram āśritya,
atimānuṣam tapas,
tepe.
18. But that maiden, O great king, after entering a hermitage (āśrama) community and taking refuge on the bank of the Yamunā, performed superhuman asceticism (tapas).
निराहारा कृशा रूक्षा जटिला मलपङ्किनी ।
षण्मासान्वायुभक्षा च स्थाणुभूता तपोधना ॥१९॥
19. nirāhārā kṛśā rūkṣā jaṭilā malapaṅkinī ,
ṣaṇmāsānvāyubhakṣā ca sthāṇubhūtā tapodhanā.
19. nirāhārā kṛśā rūkṣā jaṭilā malapaṅkinī ṣaṭ
māsān vāyubhakṣā ca sthāṇubhūtā tapodhanā
19. sā nirāhārā kṛśā rūkṣā jaṭilā malapaṅkinī ca
ṣaṭ māsān vāyubhakṣā sthāṇubhūtā tapodhanā
19. She remained without food, emaciated, dry, with matted hair, and covered in dirt. For six months, she subsisted on air, becoming as still as a pillar, her only wealth being her austerity (tapas).
यमुनातीरमासाद्य संवत्सरमथापरम् ।
उदवासं निराहारा पारयामास भामिनी ॥२०॥
20. yamunātīramāsādya saṁvatsaramathāparam ,
udavāsaṁ nirāhārā pārayāmāsa bhāminī.
20. yamunātīram āsādya saṃvatsaram atha aparam
udavāsam nirāhārā pārayāmāsa bhāminī
20. bhāminī yamunātīram āsādya,
atha aparam saṃvatsaram udavāsam nirāhārā pārayāmāsa
20. Having reached the bank of the Yamuna, that beautiful lady (bhāminī) then completed another year of austerity, standing in water and entirely without food.
शीर्णपर्णेन चैकेन पारयामास चापरम् ।
संवत्सरं तीव्रकोपा पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रधिष्ठिता ॥२१॥
21. śīrṇaparṇena caikena pārayāmāsa cāparam ,
saṁvatsaraṁ tīvrakopā pādāṅguṣṭhāgradhiṣṭhitā.
21. śīrṇaparṇena ca ekena pārayāmāsa ca aparam
saṃvatsaram tīvrakopā pādāṅguṣṭhāgradhiṣṭhitā
21. sā śīrṇaparṇena ca ekena aparam saṃvatsaram pārayāmāsa,
ca tīvrakopā pādāṅguṣṭhāgradhiṣṭhitā
21. And she completed another year, subsisting on only one withered leaf, fiercely resolute, and standing on the tip of her big toe.
एवं द्वादश वर्षाणि तापयामास रोदसी ।
निवर्त्यमानापि तु सा ज्ञातिभिर्नैव शक्यते ॥२२॥
22. evaṁ dvādaśa varṣāṇi tāpayāmāsa rodasī ,
nivartyamānāpi tu sā jñātibhirnaiva śakyate.
22. evam dvādaśa varṣāṇi tāpayāmāsa rodasī
nivartyamānā api tu sā jñātibhiḥ na eva śakyate
22. evam sā dvādaśa varṣāṇi rodasī tāpayāmāsa.
tu jñātibhiḥ nivartyamānā api sā na eva śakyate
22. Thus, for twelve years, she tormented both heaven and earth. But even while her relatives tried to dissuade her, she could not be turned back (from her resolve).
ततोऽगमद्वत्सभूमिं सिद्धचारणसेविताम् ।
आश्रमं पुण्यशीलानां तापसानां महात्मनाम् ॥२३॥
23. tato'gamadvatsabhūmiṁ siddhacāraṇasevitām ,
āśramaṁ puṇyaśīlānāṁ tāpasānāṁ mahātmanām.
23. tataḥ agamat vatsabhūmim siddhacāraṇasevitām
āśramam puṇyaśīlānām tāpasānām mahātmanām
23. (sā) tataḥ siddhacāraṇasevitām vatsabhūmim
puṇyaśīlānām mahātmanām tāpasānām āśramam agamat
23. Thereafter, she went to the land of Vatsa, frequented by Siddhas and Cāraṇas, and to the hermitage (āśrama) of great-souled ascetics (tāpasa) of virtuous conduct.
तत्र पुण्येषु देशेषु साप्लुताङ्गी दिवानिशम् ।
व्यचरत्काशिकन्या सा यथाकामविचारिणी ॥२४॥
24. tatra puṇyeṣu deśeṣu sāplutāṅgī divāniśam ,
vyacaratkāśikanyā sā yathākāmavicāriṇī.
24. tatra puṇyeṣu deśeṣu sāplutāṅgī divāniśam
vyacarat kāśikanyā sā yathākāmavīcāriṇī
24. tatra sā kāśikanyā puṇyeṣu deśeṣu sāplutāṅgī
yathākāmavīcāriṇī divāniśam vyacarat
24. There, in those sacred places, the daughter of Kāśi, her body drenched (sāplutāṅgī), wandered day and night, moving about as she pleased (yathākāmavīcāriṇī).
नन्दाश्रमे महाराज ततोलूकाश्रमे शुभे ।
च्यवनस्याश्रमे चैव ब्रह्मणः स्थान एव च ॥२५॥
25. nandāśrame mahārāja tatolūkāśrame śubhe ,
cyavanasyāśrame caiva brahmaṇaḥ sthāna eva ca.
25. nandāśrame mahārāja tataḥ ulūkāśrame śubhe
cyavanasya āśrame ca eva brahmaṇaḥ sthāne eva ca
25. mahārāja! (sā) nandāśrame,
tataḥ śubhe ulūkāśrame ca eva,
cyavanasya āśrame ca eva,
brahmaṇaḥ sthāne eva ca (vyacarat)
25. O great king (mahārāja), she (wandered) in the hermitage (āśrama) of Nanda, then in the auspicious hermitage of Ulūka, and indeed in the hermitage of Cyavana, and also in the very abode of Brahmā (brahman).
प्रयागे देवयजने देवारण्येषु चैव ह ।
भोगवत्यां तथा राजन्कौशिकस्याश्रमे तथा ॥२६॥
26. prayāge devayajane devāraṇyeṣu caiva ha ,
bhogavatyāṁ tathā rājankauśikasyāśrame tathā.
26. prayāge devayajane devāraṇyeṣu ca eva ha
bhogavatyām tathā rājan kauśikasya āśrame tathā
26. rājan prayāge devayajane ca eva ha devāraṇyeṣu
tathā bhogavatyām tathā kauśikasya āśrame
26. O King, in Prayāga, in the sacred place of worship (devayajana), and indeed in the divine forests, as well as in Bhogavatī, and likewise in the hermitage (āśrama) of Kauśika.
माण्डव्यस्याश्रमे राजन्दिलीपस्याश्रमे तथा ।
रामह्रदे च कौरव्य पैलगार्ग्यस्य चाश्रमे ॥२७॥
27. māṇḍavyasyāśrame rājandilīpasyāśrame tathā ,
rāmahrade ca kauravya pailagārgyasya cāśrame.
27. māṇḍavyasya āśrame rājan dilīpasya āśrame tathā
rāmahrade ca kauravya pailagārgyasya ca āśrame
27. rājan kauravya māṇḍavyasya āśrame tathā dilīpasya
āśrame rāmahrade ca pailagārgyasya ca āśrame
27. O king (rājan)! O scion of Kuru (kauravya)! Likewise, in the hermitage (āśrame) of Māṇḍavya, in the hermitage (āśrame) of Dilīpa, in the lake (hrade) of Rāma, and in the hermitage (āśrame) of Pailagārgya.
एतेषु तीर्थेषु तदा काशिकन्या विशां पते ।
आप्लावयत गात्राणि तीव्रमास्थाय वै तपः ॥२८॥
28. eteṣu tīrtheṣu tadā kāśikanyā viśāṁ pate ,
āplāvayata gātrāṇi tīvramāsthāya vai tapaḥ.
28. eteṣu tīrtheṣu tadā kāśikanyā viśām pate
āplāvayat gātrāṇi tīvram āsthāya vai tapaḥ
28. viśām pate tadā kāśikanyā eteṣu tīrtheṣu
tīvram tapaḥ vai āsthāya gātrāṇi āplāvayat
28. O lord of the people (viśām pate)! Then, in these sacred places (tīrtheṣu), the maiden of Kāśi, having undertaken severe austerities (tapas), bathed her limbs.
तामब्रवीत्कौरवेय मम माता जलोत्थिता ।
किमर्थं क्लिश्यसे भद्रे तथ्यमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥२९॥
29. tāmabravītkauraveya mama mātā jalotthitā ,
kimarthaṁ kliśyase bhadre tathyametadbravīhi me.
29. tām abravīt kauraveya mama mātā jalotthitā
kimartham kliśyase bhadre tatyam etat bravīhi me
29. bhadre kauraveya mama jalotthitā mātā tām
abravīt kimartham kliśyase etat tatyam me bravīhi
29. O virtuous one (bhadre)! The Kaurava (kauraveya), my mother (mātā) who arose from the waters, said to her, 'Why do you torment yourself? Tell me this truth.'
सैनामथाब्रवीद्राजन्कृताञ्जलिरनिन्दिता ।
भीष्मो रामेण समरे न जितश्चारुलोचने ॥३०॥
30. saināmathābravīdrājankṛtāñjaliraninditā ,
bhīṣmo rāmeṇa samare na jitaścārulocane.
30. sā enam atha abravīt rājan kṛtāñjaliḥ aninditā
bhīṣmaḥ rāmeṇa samare na jitaḥ ca cārulocane
30. rājan cārulocane atha sā aninditā kṛtāñjaliḥ
enam abravīt bhīṣmaḥ rāmeṇa samare na jitaḥ ca
30. O king (rājan)! O beautiful-eyed one (cārulocane)! Then, she, blameless (aninditā), with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ), said to him, 'Bhīṣma was not defeated by Rāma in battle.'
कोऽन्यस्तमुत्सहेज्जेतुमुद्यतेषुं महीपतिम् ।
साहं भीष्मविनाशाय तपस्तप्स्ये सुदारुणम् ॥३१॥
31. ko'nyastamutsahejjetumudyateṣuṁ mahīpatim ,
sāhaṁ bhīṣmavināśāya tapastapsye sudāruṇam.
31. kaḥ anyaḥ tam utsahet jetum udyata-iṣum mahīpatim
sā aham bhīṣma-vināśāya tapaḥ tapsye su-dāruṇam
31. kaḥ anyaḥ udyata-iṣum tam mahīpatim jetum utsahet? sā aham bhīṣma-vināśāya su-dāruṇam tapaḥ tapsye.
31. Who else would dare to conquer that king who has already raised his arrow? I myself will perform extremely severe austerities (tapas) for the destruction of Bhīṣma.
चरामि पृथिवीं देवि यथा हन्यामहं नृपम् ।
एतद्व्रतफलं देहे परस्मिन्स्याद्यथा हि मे ॥३२॥
32. carāmi pṛthivīṁ devi yathā hanyāmahaṁ nṛpam ,
etadvrataphalaṁ dehe parasminsyādyathā hi me.
32. carāmi pṛthivīm devi yathā hanyām aham nṛpam
etat vrata-phalam dehe parasmin syāt yathā hi me
32. devi,
aham pṛthivīm carāmi yathā nṛpam hanyām.
yathā etat vrata-phalam me parasmin dehe hi syāt.
32. O Goddess, I roam the earth so that I may kill the king. May this indeed be the fruit of my vow (vrata) in my next body.
ततोऽब्रवीत्सागरगा जिह्मं चरसि भामिनि ।
नैष कामोऽनवद्याङ्गि शक्यः प्राप्तुं त्वयाबले ॥३३॥
33. tato'bravītsāgaragā jihmaṁ carasi bhāmini ,
naiṣa kāmo'navadyāṅgi śakyaḥ prāptuṁ tvayābale.
33. tataḥ abravīt sāgara-gā jihmam carasi bhāmini na
eṣaḥ kāmaḥ anavadyāṅgi śakyaḥ prāptum tvayā abale
33. tataḥ sāgara-gā abravīt,
"bhāmini,
tvam jihmam carasi.
anavadyāṅgi,
abale,
eṣaḥ kāmaḥ tvayā prāptum na śakyaḥ.
"
33. Then the river (Sāgaragā) spoke, 'You act deceitfully, O passionate one. This desire, O woman with faultless limbs, cannot be attained by you, O weak one.'
यदि भीष्मविनाशाय काश्ये चरसि वै व्रतम् ।
व्रतस्था च शरीरं त्वं यदि नाम विमोक्ष्यसि ।
नदी भविष्यसि शुभे कुटिला वार्षिकोदका ॥३४॥
34. yadi bhīṣmavināśāya kāśye carasi vai vratam ,
vratasthā ca śarīraṁ tvaṁ yadi nāma vimokṣyasi ,
nadī bhaviṣyasi śubhe kuṭilā vārṣikodakā.
34. yadi bhīṣma-vināśāya kāśye carasi
vai vratam vrata-sthā ca śarīram
tvam yadi nāma vimokṣyasi nadī
bhaviṣyasi śubhe kuṭilā vārṣika-udakā
34. kāśye,
yadi tvam bhīṣma-vināśāya vai vratam carasi,
ca yadi nāma vrata-sthā śarīram vimokṣyasi,
[tarhi] śubhe,
kuṭilā vārṣika-udakā nadī bhaviṣyasi.
34. If, O Kāśī princess, you indeed undertake this vow (vrata) for Bhīṣma's destruction, and if you truly abandon your body while observing this vow, then, O auspicious one, you will become a crooked river with rainy-season waters.
दुस्तीर्था चानभिज्ञेया वार्षिकी नाष्टमासिकी ।
भीमग्राहवती घोरा सर्वभूतभयंकरी ॥३५॥
35. dustīrthā cānabhijñeyā vārṣikī nāṣṭamāsikī ,
bhīmagrāhavatī ghorā sarvabhūtabhayaṁkarī.

bhīmagrāhavatī ghorā sarvabhūtabhayaṃkarī

35. It was difficult to ford and unfathomable; perennial, not limited to an eight-month period; full of fierce aquatic predators, dreadful, and a terror to all beings.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्काशिकन्यां न्यवर्तत ।
माता मम महाभागा स्मयमानेव भामिनी ॥३६॥
36. evamuktvā tato rājankāśikanyāṁ nyavartata ,
mātā mama mahābhāgā smayamāneva bhāminī.

mātā mama mahābhāgā smayamānā iva bhāminī

36. Having spoken thus, O King, my illustrious mother, a beautiful woman, as if smiling, then turned back to the daughter of Kashi.
कदाचिदष्टमे मासि कदाचिद्दशमे तथा ।
न प्राश्नीतोदकमपि पुनः सा वरवर्णिनी ॥३७॥
37. kadācidaṣṭame māsi kadāciddaśame tathā ,
na prāśnītodakamapi punaḥ sā varavarṇinī.
37. kadācit aṣṭame māsi kadācit daśame tathā na
prāśnītaḥ udakam api punaḥ sā varavarṇinī

37. Sometimes in the eighth month, and similarly in the tenth, they both (the mother and the daughter of Kashi) would again not consume even water; she was a woman of excellent complexion.
सा वत्सभूमिं कौरव्य तीर्थलोभात्ततस्ततः ।
पतिता परिधावन्ती पुनः काशिपतेः सुता ॥३८॥
38. sā vatsabhūmiṁ kauravya tīrthalobhāttatastataḥ ,
patitā paridhāvantī punaḥ kāśipateḥ sutā.

38. kauravya,
sā kāśipateḥ sutā patitā tīrthalobhāt punaḥ tataḥ tataḥ paridhāvantī vatsabhūmim (agat)
38. O Kauravya, that daughter of the lord of Kashi, having fallen (into distress) and wandering here and there, again journeyed to the land of Vatsa, driven by the desire for a sacred bathing place (tīrtha).
सा नदी वत्सभूम्यां तु प्रथिताम्बेति भारत ।
वार्षिकी ग्राहबहुला दुस्तीर्था कुटिला तथा ॥३९॥
39. sā nadī vatsabhūmyāṁ tu prathitāmbeti bhārata ,
vārṣikī grāhabahulā dustīrthā kuṭilā tathā.
39. sā nadī vatsabhūmyām tu prathitā ambā iti bhārata
vārṣikī grāhabahulā dustīrthā kuṭilā tathā
39. bhārata,
vatsabhūmyām sā nadī tu ambā iti prathitā (āsīt).

39. O Bhārata, that river in the land of Vatsa, renowned as Ambā, was seasonal, teeming with crocodiles, difficult to ford, and winding.
सा कन्या तपसा तेन भागार्धेन व्यजायत ।
नदी च राजन्वत्सेषु कन्या चैवाभवत्तदा ॥४०॥
40. sā kanyā tapasā tena bhāgārdhena vyajāyata ,
nadī ca rājanvatseṣu kanyā caivābhavattadā.
40. sā kanyā tapasā tena bhāgārdhena vyajāyata nadī
ca rājan vatseṣu kanyā ca eva abhavat tadā
40. rājan,
sā kanyā tena tapasā bhāgārdhena vyajāyata.
tadā (sā) nadī ca vatseṣu kanyā ca eva abhavat.
40. O King, that maiden was born through that ascetic practice (tapas), receiving half a share [of its merit]. Then, she became both a river among the Vatsas and a maiden.
