शौनक उवाच ।
सौते कथय तामेतां विस्तरेण कथां पुनः ।
आस्तीकस्य कवेः साधोः शुश्रूषा परमा हि नः ॥१॥
1. śaunaka uvāca ,
saute kathaya tāmetāṁ vistareṇa kathāṁ punaḥ ,
āstīkasya kaveḥ sādhoḥ śuśrūṣā paramā hi naḥ.

1. Saunaka said: O Sauti, please recount that story of Astika again in detail. Indeed, our desire to hear more about the virtuous sage Astika is paramount.
मधुरं कथ्यते सौम्य श्लक्ष्णाक्षरपदं त्वया ।
प्रीयामहे भृशं तात पितेवेदं प्रभाषसे ॥२॥
2. madhuraṁ kathyate saumya ślakṣṇākṣarapadaṁ tvayā ,
prīyāmahe bhṛśaṁ tāta pitevedaṁ prabhāṣase.
2. madhuram kathyate saumya ślakṣṇākṣarapadam tvayā
prīyāmahe bhṛśam tāta pitā iva idam prabhāṣase
2. O gentle one, you narrate sweetly, with clear syllables and words. We are exceedingly pleased, dear father-figure, for you speak this as a father would.
अस्मच्छुश्रूषणे नित्यं पिता हि निरतस्तव ।
आचष्टैतद्यथाख्यानं पिता ते त्वं तथा वद ॥३॥
3. asmacchuśrūṣaṇe nityaṁ pitā hi niratastava ,
ācaṣṭaitadyathākhyānaṁ pitā te tvaṁ tathā vada.
3. asmad śuśrūṣaṇe nityam pitā hi nirataḥ tava ācaṣṭa
etad yathā ākhyānam pitā te tvam tathā vada
3. Indeed, your father was constantly devoted to our service (of hearing stories). Just as your father recounted this narrative, so too should you relate it.
सूत उवाच ।
आयुष्यमिदमाख्यानमास्तीकं कथयामि ते ।
यथा श्रुतं कथयतः सकाशाद्वै पितुर्मया ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
āyuṣyamidamākhyānamāstīkaṁ kathayāmi te ,
yathā śrutaṁ kathayataḥ sakāśādvai piturmayā.
4. sūta uvāca āyuṣyam idam ākhyānam āstīkam kathayāmi
te yathā śrutam kathayataḥ sakāśāt vai pituḥ mayā
4. Suta said: I will narrate this life-prolonging story of Astika to you, just as it was heard by me from my father (while he was) narrating (it).
पुरा देवयुगे ब्रह्मन्प्रजापतिसुते शुभे ।
आस्तां भगिन्यौ रूपेण समुपेतेऽद्भुतेऽनघे ॥५॥
5. purā devayuge brahmanprajāpatisute śubhe ,
āstāṁ bhaginyau rūpeṇa samupete'dbhute'naghe.

āstām bhaginyau rūpeṇa samupete adbhute anaghe
5. O Brahman, in ancient divine times, there were two auspicious sisters, daughters of Prajapati. They were wonderful and faultless, endowed with great beauty.
ते भार्ये कश्यपस्यास्तां कद्रूश्च विनता च ह ।
प्रादात्ताभ्यां वरं प्रीतः प्रजापतिसमः पतिः ।
कश्यपो धर्मपत्नीभ्यां मुदा परमया युतः ॥६॥
6. te bhārye kaśyapasyāstāṁ kadrūśca vinatā ca ha ,
prādāttābhyāṁ varaṁ prītaḥ prajāpatisamaḥ patiḥ ,
kaśyapo dharmapatnībhyāṁ mudā paramayā yutaḥ.
6. te bhārye kaśyapasya āstām kadrūḥ ca
vinatā ca ha prādāt tābhyām varam
prītaḥ prajāpatisamaḥ patiḥ kaśyapaḥ
dharmapatnībhyām mudā paramayā yutaḥ
6. Those two, Kadrū and Vinatā, were indeed Kaśyapa's wives. Kaśyapa, their husband, who was pleased, joyful, and equal to Prajapati, granted a boon to his two lawful wives.
वरातिसर्गं श्रुत्वैव कश्यपादुत्तमं च ते ।
हर्षादप्रतिमां प्रीतिं प्रापतुः स्म वरस्त्रियौ ॥७॥
7. varātisargaṁ śrutvaiva kaśyapāduttamaṁ ca te ,
harṣādapratimāṁ prītiṁ prāpatuḥ sma varastriyau.
7. vara-atisargam śrutvā eva kaśyapāt uttamam ca te
harṣāt apratimām prītim prāpatuḥ sma varastriyau
7. And indeed, when those two excellent women heard about the supreme boon granted by Kaśyapa, they attained incomparable joy out of delight.
वव्रे कद्रूः सुतान्नागान्सहस्रं तुल्यतेजसः ।
द्वौ पुत्रौ विनता वव्रे कद्रूपुत्राधिकौ बले ।
ओजसा तेजसा चैव विक्रमेणाधिकौ सुतौ ॥८॥
8. vavre kadrūḥ sutānnāgānsahasraṁ tulyatejasaḥ ,
dvau putrau vinatā vavre kadrūputrādhikau bale ,
ojasā tejasā caiva vikrameṇādhikau sutau.
8. vavre kadrūḥ sutān nāgān sahasram
tulyatejasaḥ dvau putrau vinatā
vavre kadrūputra-adhikau bale ojasā
tejasā ca eva vikrameṇa adhikau sutau
8. Kadrū chose a thousand sons who were Nāgas, possessing equal splendor. Vinatā, however, chose two sons who would be superior to Kadrū's sons in strength, and indeed, greater in vigor, brilliance, and valor.
तस्यै भर्ता वरं प्रादादध्यर्धं पुत्रमीप्सितम् ।
एवमस्त्विति तं चाह कश्यपं विनता तदा ॥९॥
9. tasyai bhartā varaṁ prādādadhyardhaṁ putramīpsitam ,
evamastviti taṁ cāha kaśyapaṁ vinatā tadā.
9. tasyai bhartā varam prādāt adhyardham putram īpsitam
evam astu iti tam ca āha kaśyapam vinatā tadā
9. Her husband granted her the desired boon of sons who would be superior. Then, Vinatā said to Kaśyapa, 'So be it!'
कृतकृत्या तु विनता लब्ध्वा वीर्याधिकौ सुतौ ।
कद्रूश्च लब्ध्वा पुत्राणां सहस्रं तुल्यतेजसाम् ॥१०॥
10. kṛtakṛtyā tu vinatā labdhvā vīryādhikau sutau ,
kadrūśca labdhvā putrāṇāṁ sahasraṁ tulyatejasām.
10. kṛtakṛtyā tu vinatā labdhvā vīryādhikau sutau
kadrūḥ ca labdhvā putrāṇām sahasram tulyatejasām
10. Vinata, having obtained two exceedingly mighty sons, felt fulfilled. Kadru, too, having obtained a thousand sons of equal splendor, was pleased.
धार्यौ प्रयत्नतो गर्भावित्युक्त्वा स महातपाः ।
ते भार्ये वरसंहृष्टे कश्यपो वनमाविशत् ॥११॥
11. dhāryau prayatnato garbhāvityuktvā sa mahātapāḥ ,
te bhārye varasaṁhṛṣṭe kaśyapo vanamāviśat.
11. dhāryau prayatnataḥ garbhau iti uktvā saḥ mahātapāḥ
te bhārye varasaṁhṛṣṭe kaśyapaḥ vanam āviśat
11. "These two embryos must be carefully sustained," having said this to his two wives, who were greatly delighted by the boon, that great ascetic Kashyapa entered the forest.
कालेन महता कद्रूरण्डानां दशतीर्दश ।
जनयामास विप्रेन्द्र द्वे अण्डे विनता तदा ॥१२॥
12. kālena mahatā kadrūraṇḍānāṁ daśatīrdaśa ,
janayāmāsa viprendra dve aṇḍe vinatā tadā.
12. kālena mahatā kadrūḥ aṇḍānām daśatīḥ daśa
janayāmāsa viprendra dve aṇḍe vinatā tadā
12. O chief of Brahmins, after a long time, Kadru produced ten tens of eggs (one hundred eggs), and Vinata then produced two eggs.
तयोरण्डानि निदधुः प्रहृष्टाः परिचारिकाः ।
सोपस्वेदेषु भाण्डेषु पञ्च वर्षशतानि च ॥१३॥
13. tayoraṇḍāni nidadhuḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ paricārikāḥ ,
sopasvedeṣu bhāṇḍeṣu pañca varṣaśatāni ca.
13. tayoḥ aṇḍāni nidadhuḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ paricārikāḥ
sopasvedeṣu bhāṇḍeṣu pañca varṣaśatāni ca
13. The delighted maidservants placed their eggs in warm, moist vessels for five hundred years.
ततः पञ्चशते काले कद्रूपुत्रा विनिःसृताः ।
अण्डाभ्यां विनतायास्तु मिथुनं न व्यदृश्यत ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ pañcaśate kāle kadrūputrā viniḥsṛtāḥ ,
aṇḍābhyāṁ vinatāyāstu mithunaṁ na vyadṛśyata.
14. tataḥ pañcaśate kāle kadrūputrāḥ viniḥsṛtāḥ
aṇḍābhyām vinatāyāḥ tu mithunam na vyadṛśyata
14. Then, after five hundred (years/days), Kadru's sons emerged. But from Vinata's two eggs, no offspring were seen.
ततः पुत्रार्थिणी देवी व्रीडिता सा तपस्विनी ।
अण्डं बिभेद विनता तत्र पुत्रमदृक्षत ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ putrārthiṇī devī vrīḍitā sā tapasvinī ,
aṇḍaṁ bibheda vinatā tatra putramadṛkṣata.
15. tataḥ putrārthinī devī vrīḍitā sā tapasvinī
aṇḍam bibheda vinatā tatra putram adṛkṣata
15. Then, Vinata, that pitiable goddess who was desirous of a son and felt ashamed, broke the egg. Inside, she saw a son.
पूर्वार्धकायसंपन्नमितरेणाप्रकाशता ।
स पुत्रो रोषसंपन्नः शशापैनामिति श्रुतिः ॥१६॥
16. pūrvārdhakāyasaṁpannamitareṇāprakāśatā ,
sa putro roṣasaṁpannaḥ śaśāpaināmiti śrutiḥ.
16. pūrvārdhakāyasaṃpannam itareṇa aprakāśatā saḥ
putraḥ roṣasaṃpannaḥ śaśāpa enām iti śrutiḥ
16. He was endowed with only the upper half of his body, while by the other (part) there was non-manifestation. That son, filled with anger, cursed her; such is the tradition.
योऽहमेवं कृतो मातस्त्वया लोभपरीतया ।
शरीरेणासमग्रोऽद्य तस्माद्दासी भविष्यसि ॥१७॥
17. yo'hamevaṁ kṛto mātastvayā lobhaparītayā ,
śarīreṇāsamagro'dya tasmāddāsī bhaviṣyasi.
17. yaḥ aham evam kṛtaḥ mātaḥ tvayā lobhaparītayā
śarīreṇa asamagraḥ adya tasmāt dāsī bhaviṣyasi
17. O mother, because you, overcome by greed, have made me incomplete in body like this today, therefore you shall become a slave!
पञ्च वर्षशतान्यस्या यया विस्पर्धसे सह ।
एष च त्वां सुतो मातर्दास्यत्वान्मोक्षयिष्यति ॥१८॥
18. pañca varṣaśatānyasyā yayā vispardhase saha ,
eṣa ca tvāṁ suto mātardāsyatvānmokṣayiṣyati.
18. pañca varṣaśatāni asyāḥ yayā vispardhase saha
eṣaḥ ca tvām sutaḥ mātaḥ dāsyatvāt mokṣayiṣyati
18. For five hundred years, you shall remain (a slave) to her with whom you contend. And this son, O mother, will liberate you from servitude.
यद्येनमपि मातस्त्वं मामिवाण्डविभेदनात् ।
न करिष्यस्यदेहं वा व्यङ्गं वापि तपस्विनम् ॥१९॥
19. yadyenamapi mātastvaṁ māmivāṇḍavibhedanāt ,
na kariṣyasyadehaṁ vā vyaṅgaṁ vāpi tapasvinam.
19. yadi enam api mātaḥ tvam mām iva aṇḍavibhedanāt
na kariṣyasi adeham vā vyaṅgam vā api tapasvinam
19. O mother, if you do not, by breaking the egg, make this one (your second son) like me — bodiless, or deformed, or even pitiable...
प्रतिपालयितव्यस्ते जन्मकालोऽस्य धीरया ।
विशिष्टबलमीप्सन्त्या पञ्चवर्षशतात्परः ॥२०॥
20. pratipālayitavyaste janmakālo'sya dhīrayā ,
viśiṣṭabalamīpsantyā pañcavarṣaśatātparaḥ.
20. pratipālayitavyaḥ te janmakālaḥ asya dhīrayā
viśiṣṭabalam īpsantyā pañcavarṣaśatāt paraḥ
20. His birth time, which is after five hundred years, should be patiently awaited by you, who desires exceptional strength for him.
एवं शप्त्वा ततः पुत्रो विनतामन्तरिक्षगः ।
अरुणो दृश्यते ब्रह्मन्प्रभातसमये सदा ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ śaptvā tataḥ putro vinatāmantarikṣagaḥ ,
aruṇo dṛśyate brahmanprabhātasamaye sadā.
21. evam śaptvā tataḥ putraḥ vinatām antarikṣagaḥ
aruṇaḥ dṛśyate brahman prabhātasamaye sadā
21. O Brahman, after thus cursing Vinatā, that son, Aruṇa, who travels in the sky, is always seen at dawn.
गरुडोऽपि यथाकालं जज्ञे पन्नगसूदनः ।
स जातमात्रो विनतां परित्यज्य खमाविशत् ॥२२॥
22. garuḍo'pi yathākālaṁ jajñe pannagasūdanaḥ ,
sa jātamātro vinatāṁ parityajya khamāviśat.
22. garuḍaḥ api yathākālam jajñe pannagasūdanaḥ
saḥ jātamātraḥ vinatām parityajya kham āviśat
22. Garuḍa, the destroyer of serpents, was also born in due time. Immediately after his birth, he abandoned Vinatā and entered the sky.
आदास्यन्नात्मनो भोज्यमन्नं विहितमस्य यत् ।
विधात्रा भृगुशार्दूल क्षुधितस्य बुभुक्षतः ॥२३॥
23. ādāsyannātmano bhojyamannaṁ vihitamasya yat ,
vidhātrā bhṛguśārdūla kṣudhitasya bubhukṣataḥ.
23. ādāsyant ātmanaḥ bhojyam annam vihitam asya yat
vidhātrā bhṛguśārdūla kṣudhitasya bubhukṣataḥ
23. O best of the Bhṛgus, [Garuḍa], who was hungry and desirous of eating, was about to consume his own food, which had been ordained for him by the Creator.
