प्रतिज्ञाते फल्गुनेन वधे भीष्मस्य संजय ।
किमकुर्वन्त मे मन्दाः पुत्रा दुर्योधनादयः ॥१॥

pratijñāte phalgunena vadhe bhīṣmasya saṁjaya ,

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Saṃjaya, when Arjuna had vowed to slay Bhishma, what did my dull-witted sons, Duryodhana and the others, do then?"
हतमेव हि पश्यामि गाङ्गेयं पितरं रणे ।
वासुदेवसहायेन पार्थेन दृढधन्वना ॥२॥
2. hatameva hi paśyāmi gāṅgeyaṁ pitaraṁ raṇe ,
vāsudevasahāyena pārthena dṛḍhadhanvanā.
2. hatam eva hi paśyāmi gāṅgeyam pitaram raṇe

2. Indeed, I see Bhishma (Gāṅgeya), my respected elder, already slain in battle by Arjuna (Pārtha), who has Vāsudeva (Krishna) as his helper and wields a firm bow.
स चापरिमितप्रज्ञस्तच्छ्रुत्वा पार्थभाषितम् ।
किमुक्तवान्महेष्वासो भीष्मः प्रहरतां वरः ॥३॥
3. sa cāparimitaprajñastacchrutvā pārthabhāṣitam ,
kimuktavānmaheṣvāso bhīṣmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.
3. saḥ ca aparimitaprajñaḥ tat śrutvā pārthabhāṣitam
| kim uktavān maheṣvāsaḥ bhīṣmaḥ praharatām varaḥ

3. And Bhishma, who possesses immeasurable wisdom (prajñā), the great archer and foremost among warriors, having heard those words spoken by Arjuna (Pārtha), what did he say?
सेनापत्यं च संप्राप्य कौरवाणां धुरंधरः ।
किमचेष्टत गाङ्गेयो महाबुद्धिपराक्रमः ॥४॥
4. senāpatyaṁ ca saṁprāpya kauravāṇāṁ dhuraṁdharaḥ ,
kimaceṣṭata gāṅgeyo mahābuddhiparākramaḥ.

4. What did Ganga's son (Gāṅgeya), the chief among the Kauravas and one of great intellect and valor, do after he had obtained command of the army?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्तत्संजयस्तस्मै सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत् ।
यथोक्तं कुरुवृद्धेन भीष्मेणामिततेजसा ॥५॥
5. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tatastatsaṁjayastasmai sarvameva nyavedayat ,
yathoktaṁ kuruvṛddhena bhīṣmeṇāmitatejasā.
5. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ tat sañjayaḥ tasmai sarvam eva
nyavedayat yathoktam kuruvṛddhena bhīṣmeṇa amitatejasā

5. Vaishampayana said: Then Sanjaya reported all that (tat) to him (Dhritarashtra), just as it had been spoken by Bhishma, the elder of the Kurus and one of immeasurable splendor (tejas).
संजय उवाच ।
सेनापत्यमनुप्राप्य भीष्मः शांतनवो नृप ।
दुर्योधनमुवाचेदं वचनं हर्षयन्निव ॥६॥
6. saṁjaya uvāca ,
senāpatyamanuprāpya bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo nṛpa ,
duryodhanamuvācedaṁ vacanaṁ harṣayanniva.
6. sañjayaḥ uvāca senāpatyam anuprāpya bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavaḥ
nṛpa duryodhanam uvāca idam vacanam harṣayan iva

6. Sanjaya said: O King, after obtaining the generalship, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, spoke these words to Duryodhana, as if delighting him.
नमस्कृत्वा कुमाराय सेनान्ये शक्तिपाणये ।
अहं सेनापतिस्तेऽद्य भविष्यामि न संशयः ॥७॥
7. namaskṛtvā kumārāya senānye śaktipāṇaye ,
ahaṁ senāpatiste'dya bhaviṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ.
7. namaskṛtvā kumārāya senānye śaktipāṇaye aham
senāpatiḥ te adya bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
7. kumārāya senānye śaktipāṇaye namaskṛtvā aham

7. Having paid homage to Kumara (Skanda), the commander of the army who holds the spear (śakti) in his hand, I shall certainly be your general today; there is no doubt.
सेनाकर्मण्यभिज्ञोऽस्मि व्यूहेषु विविधेषु च ।
कर्म कारयितुं चैव भृतानप्यभृतांस्तथा ॥८॥
8. senākarmaṇyabhijño'smi vyūheṣu vividheṣu ca ,
karma kārayituṁ caiva bhṛtānapyabhṛtāṁstathā.
8. senākarmaṇi abhijñaḥ asmi vyūheṣu vividheṣu ca
karma kārayitum ca eva bhṛtān api abhṛtān tathā
8. aham senākarmaṇi vividheṣu vyūheṣu ca abhijñaḥ asmi
ca eva bhṛtān api abhṛtān tathā karma kārayitum
8. I am skilled in military operations and various battle formations. Furthermore, I can make both employed and unemployed individuals perform tasks (karma).
यात्रायानेषु युद्धेषु लब्धप्रशमनेषु च ।
भृशं वेद महाराज यथा वेद बृहस्पतिः ॥९॥
9. yātrāyāneṣu yuddheṣu labdhapraśamaneṣu ca ,
bhṛśaṁ veda mahārāja yathā veda bṛhaspatiḥ.
9. yātrāyāneṣu yuddheṣu labdhapraśamaneṣu ca
bhṛśam veda mahārāja yathā veda bṛhaspatiḥ
9. mahārāja,
aham yātrāyāneṣu yuddheṣu labdhapraśamaneṣu ca bhṛśam veda,
yathā bṛhaspatiḥ veda
9. O great king, I know a great deal about military campaigns, battles, and the pacification of conquered territories, just as Brihaspati, the preceptor of the gods, knows.
व्यूहानपि महारम्भान्दैवगान्धर्वमानुषान् ।
तैरहं मोहयिष्यामि पाण्डवान्व्येतु ते ज्वरः ॥१०॥
10. vyūhānapi mahārambhāndaivagāndharvamānuṣān ,
tairahaṁ mohayiṣyāmi pāṇḍavānvyetu te jvaraḥ.
10. vyūhān api mahārambhān daivagāndharvamānuṣān
taiḥ aham mohayiṣyāmi pāṇḍavān vyetu te jvaraḥ
10. aham api mahārambhān daivagāndharvamānuṣān
vyūhān taiḥ pāṇḍavān mohayiṣyāmi te jvaraḥ vyetu
10. Using even the very formidable divine, Gandharva, and human battle formations, I will bewilder the Pāṇḍavas. Let your distress (jvara) vanish.
सोऽहं योत्स्यामि तत्त्वेन पालयंस्तव वाहिनीम् ।
यथावच्छास्त्रतो राजन्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥११॥
11. so'haṁ yotsyāmi tattvena pālayaṁstava vāhinīm ,
yathāvacchāstrato rājanvyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
11. saḥ aham yotsyāmi tattvena pālayan tava vāhinīm
yathāvat śāstrataḥ rājan vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
11. rājan,
saḥ aham tattvena yathāvat śāstrataḥ tava vāhinīm pālayan yotsyāmi te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ vyetu
11. I, being such a one, will fight with integrity, protecting your army in accordance with scriptural principles (śāstra). O king, let your mental distress (jvara) vanish.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
न विद्यते मे गाङ्गेय भयं देवासुरेष्वपि ।
समस्तेषु महाबाहो सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१२॥
12. duryodhana uvāca ,
na vidyate me gāṅgeya bhayaṁ devāsureṣvapi ,
samasteṣu mahābāho satyametadbravīmi te.
12. duryodhana uvāca | na vidyate me gāṅgeya bhayam devāsureṣu
api | samasteṣu mahābāho satyam etat bravīmi te
12. duryodhana uvāca gāṅgeya mahābāho me devāsureṣu api
samasteṣu bhayam na vidyate etat satyam te bravīmi
12. Duryodhana said: "O son of Gaṅgā (Bhīṣma), I have no fear even among all the gods and asuras. O mighty-armed one, I tell you this truth."
किं पुनस्त्वयि दुर्धर्षे सेनापत्ये व्यवस्थिते ।
द्रोणे च पुरुषव्याघ्रे स्थिते युद्धाभिनन्दिनि ॥१३॥
13. kiṁ punastvayi durdharṣe senāpatye vyavasthite ,
droṇe ca puruṣavyāghre sthite yuddhābhinandini.
13. kim punaḥ tvayi durdharṣe senāpatye vyavasthite |
droṇe ca puruṣa-vyāghre sthite yuddha-abhinandini
13. punaḥ kim tvayi durdharṣe senāpatye vyavasthite
ca puruṣa-vyāghre yuddha-abhinandini droṇe sthite
13. What then to speak of when you, the unassailable one, are established as commander-in-chief, and Droṇa, the tiger among men, who delights in battle, is also present?
भवद्भ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां स्थिताभ्यां विजयो मम ।
न दुर्लभं कुरुश्रेष्ठ देवराज्यमपि ध्रुवम् ॥१४॥
14. bhavadbhyāṁ puruṣāgryābhyāṁ sthitābhyāṁ vijayo mama ,
na durlabhaṁ kuruśreṣṭha devarājyamapi dhruvam.
14. bhavadbhyām puruṣa-agryābhyām sthitābhyām vijayaḥ mama
| na durlabham kuru-śreṣṭha deva-rājyam api dhruvam
14. kuru-śreṣṭha bhavadbhyām puruṣa-agryābhyām sthitābhyām mama
vijayaḥ na durlabham api deva-rājyam dhruvam na durlabham
14. With you two, the foremost among men, standing firm, victory for me is not difficult. O best of Kurus, even the kingdom of the gods is certainly not difficult to obtain.
रथसंख्यां तु कार्त्स्न्येन परेषामात्मनस्तथा ।
तथैवातिरथानां च वेत्तुमिच्छामि कौरव ॥१५॥
15. rathasaṁkhyāṁ tu kārtsnyena pareṣāmātmanastathā ,
tathaivātirathānāṁ ca vettumicchāmi kaurava.
15. ratha-saṅkhyām tu kārtsnyena pareṣām ātmanaḥ tathā
| tathā eva atirathānām ca vettum icchāmi kaurava
15. kaurava tu kārtsnyena pareṣām ātmanaḥ tathā ca
atirathānām ratha-saṅkhyām eva vettum icchāmi
15. However, O Kuru (chief), I wish to know completely the number of chariots belonging to the opponents, and likewise of our own side, as well as (the number) of the atirathas (great chariot warriors).
पितामहो हि कुशलः परेषामात्मनस्तथा ।
श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं सर्वैः सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥१६॥
16. pitāmaho hi kuśalaḥ pareṣāmātmanastathā ,
śrotumicchāmyahaṁ sarvaiḥ sahaibhirvasudhādhipaiḥ.
16. pitāmahaḥ hi kuśalaḥ pareṣām ātmanaḥ tathā śrotum
icchāmi aham sarvaiḥ sahaiḥ ebhiḥ vasudhādhipaiḥ
16. aham sarvaiḥ sahaiḥ ebhiḥ vasudhādhipaiḥ saha śrotum icchāmi.
hi pitāmahaḥ pareṣām ātmanaḥ tathā kuśalaḥ (asti).
16. Indeed, Grandfather (Bhīṣma) is skilled concerning both our adversaries and our own side. I desire to hear everything along with all these companion rulers of the earth.
भीष्म उवाच ।
गान्धारे शृणु राजेन्द्र रथसंख्यां स्वके बले ।
ये रथाः पृथिवीपाल तथैवातिरथाश्च ये ॥१७॥
17. bhīṣma uvāca ,
gāndhāre śṛṇu rājendra rathasaṁkhyāṁ svake bale ,
ye rathāḥ pṛthivīpāla tathaivātirathāśca ye.
17. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca gāndhāre śṛṇu rājendra rathasaṃkhyām svake
bale ye rathāḥ pṛthivīpāla tathā eva atirathāḥ ca ye
17. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca: he gāndhāre rājendra pṛthivīpāla,
svake bale ye rathāḥ ye ca tathā eva atirathāḥ (santi),
(teṣām) rathasaṃkhyām śṛṇu.
17. Bhīṣma said: O king of kings (rājendra), son of Gandhārī, listen to the number of chariot-warriors in your own army (bala) – specifically who are chariot-fighters (ratha) and who are great chariot-warriors (atiratha), O protector of the earth (pṛthivīpāla).
बहूनीह सहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ।
रथानां तव सेनायां यथामुख्यं तु मे शृणु ॥१८॥
18. bahūnīha sahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca ,
rathānāṁ tava senāyāṁ yathāmukhyaṁ tu me śṛṇu.
18. bahūni iha sahasrāṇi prayutāni arbudāni ca
rathānām tava senāyām yathāmukhyam tu me śṛṇu
18. iha tava senāyām bahūni sahasrāṇi prayutāni arbudāni ca rathānām (santi).
tu me yathāmukhyam śṛṇu.
18. Here in your army (senā) are many thousands, millions, and hundreds of millions of chariot-warriors. However, listen to my account of the principal ones.
भवानग्रे रथोदारः सह सर्वैः सहोदरैः ।
दुःशासनप्रभृतिभिर्भ्रातृभिः शतसंमितैः ॥१९॥
19. bhavānagre rathodāraḥ saha sarvaiḥ sahodaraiḥ ,
duḥśāsanaprabhṛtibhirbhrātṛbhiḥ śatasaṁmitaiḥ.
19. bhavān agre rathodāraḥ saha sarvaiḥ sahodaraiḥ
duḥśāsanaprabhṛtibhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ śatasaṃmitaiḥ
19. bhavān agre rathodāraḥ (asti) sarvaiḥ duḥśāsanaprabhṛtibhiḥ śatasaṃmitaiḥ sahodaraiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
19. You (Duryodhana) are foremost, an excellent chariot-warrior (ratha). You are accompanied by all your hundred brothers, including Duḥśāsana and others.
सर्वे कृतप्रहरणाश्छेद्यभेद्यविशारदाः ।
रथोपस्थे गजस्कन्धे गदायुद्धेऽसिचर्मणि ॥२०॥
20. sarve kṛtapraharaṇāśchedyabhedyaviśāradāḥ ,
rathopasthe gajaskandhe gadāyuddhe'sicarmaṇi.
20. sarve kṛtapraharaṇāḥ chedyabhedyaviśāradāḥ
rathopasthe gajaskandhe gadāyuddhe asi carmaṇi
20. sarve kṛtapraharaṇāḥ chedyabhedyaviśāradāḥ
rathopasthe gajaskandhe gadāyuddhe asi carmaṇi
20. All of them are well-equipped with weapons and adept at cutting and piercing. They are skilled in fighting from a chariot, atop an elephant, in mace combat, and with sword and shield.
संयन्तारः प्रहर्तारः कृतास्त्रा भारसाधनाः ।
इष्वस्त्रे द्रोणशिष्याश्च कृपस्य च शरद्वतः ॥२१॥
21. saṁyantāraḥ prahartāraḥ kṛtāstrā bhārasādhanāḥ ,
iṣvastre droṇaśiṣyāśca kṛpasya ca śaradvataḥ.
21. saṃyantāraḥ prahartāraḥ kṛtāstrāḥ bhārasādhanāḥ
iṣvastre droṇaśiṣyāḥ ca kṛpasya ca śaradvataḥ
21. saṃyantāraḥ prahartāraḥ kṛtāstrāḥ bhārasādhanāḥ
ca droṇaśiṣyāḥ kṛpasya śaradvataḥ ca iṣvastre
21. They are also capable charioteers, expert attackers, masters of weapons (kṛtāstrāḥ), and able to bear heavy burdens. They are particularly skilled in archery (iṣvastre), being disciples of Droṇa and Kṛpa, son of Śaradvat.
एते हनिष्यन्ति रणे पाञ्चालान्युद्धदुर्मदान् ।
कृतकिल्बिषाः पाण्डवेयैर्धार्तराष्ट्रा मनस्विनः ॥२२॥
22. ete haniṣyanti raṇe pāñcālānyuddhadurmadān ,
kṛtakilbiṣāḥ pāṇḍaveyairdhārtarāṣṭrā manasvinaḥ.
22. ete haniṣyanti raṇe pāñcālān yuddhadurmadān
kṛtakilbiṣāḥ pāṇḍaveyaiḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ manasvinaḥ
22. ete raṇe yuddhadurmadān pāñcālān haniṣyanti
manasvinaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ pāṇḍaveyaiḥ kṛtakilbiṣāḥ
22. These warriors will surely slay the Pañcālas, who are excessively fierce in battle. The proud Dhārtarāṣṭras have been greatly wronged by the Pāṇḍavas.
ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ सर्वसेनापतिस्तव ।
शत्रून्विध्वंसयिष्यामि कदर्थीकृत्य पाण्डवान् ।
न त्वात्मनो गुणान्वक्तुमर्हामि विदितोऽस्मि ते ॥२३॥
23. tato'haṁ bharataśreṣṭha sarvasenāpatistava ,
śatrūnvidhvaṁsayiṣyāmi kadarthīkṛtya pāṇḍavān ,
na tvātmano guṇānvaktumarhāmi vidito'smi te.
23. tataḥ aham bharataśreṣṭha sarvasenāpatiḥ
tava śatrūn vidhvaṃsayiṣyāmi
kadarthīkṛtya pāṇḍavān na tu ātmanaḥ
guṇān vaktum arhāmi viditaḥ asmi te
23. bharataśreṣṭha tataḥ aham tava
sarvasenāpatiḥ pāṇḍavān kadarthīkṛtya
śatrūn vidhvaṃsayiṣyāmi tu ātmanaḥ
guṇān vaktum na arhāmi te viditaḥ asmi
23. Therefore, O best among Bharatas, I, your commander-in-chief, will utterly destroy the enemies, having first humiliated the Pāṇḍavas. However, I should not speak of the qualities of my self (ātman), as I am already well known to you.
कृतवर्मा त्वतिरथो भोजः प्रहरतां वरः ।
अर्थसिद्धिं तव रणे करिष्यति न संशयः ॥२४॥
24. kṛtavarmā tvatiratho bhojaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ ,
arthasiddhiṁ tava raṇe kariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ.
24. kṛtavarmā tu atirathaḥ bhojaḥ praharatām varaḥ
arthasiddhim tava raṇe kariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
24. kṛtavarmā bhojaḥ tu atirathaḥ praharatām varaḥ
tava raṇe arthasiddhim kariṣyati saṃśayaḥ na
24. Kṛtavarmā, the Bhoja, who is indeed a great chariot warrior and the best among attackers, will certainly accomplish your objective in battle; there is no doubt about it.
अस्त्रविद्भिरनाधृष्यो दूरपाती दृढायुधः ।
हनिष्यति रिपूंस्तुभ्यं महेन्द्रो दानवानिव ॥२५॥
25. astravidbhiranādhṛṣyo dūrapātī dṛḍhāyudhaḥ ,
haniṣyati ripūṁstubhyaṁ mahendro dānavāniva.
25. astravidbhiḥ anādhṛṣyaḥ dūrapātī dṛḍhāyudhaḥ
haniṣyati ripūn tubhyam mahendraḥ dānavān iva
25. astravidbhiḥ anādhṛṣyaḥ dūrapātī dṛḍhāyudhaḥ
tubhyam ripūn haniṣyati mahendraḥ dānavān iva
25. He, who is unassailable by those skilled in weaponry, strikes from afar, and wields firm weapons, will slay your enemies just as Mahendra (Indra), the slayer of demons (Dānavas), does.
मद्रराजो महेष्वासः शल्यो मेऽतिरथो मतः ।
स्पर्धते वासुदेवेन यो वै नित्यं रणे रणे ॥२६॥
26. madrarājo maheṣvāsaḥ śalyo me'tiratho mataḥ ,
spardhate vāsudevena yo vai nityaṁ raṇe raṇe.
26. madrarājaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ śalyaḥ me atirathaḥ mataḥ
spardhate vāsudevena yaḥ vai nityam raṇe raṇe
26. madrarājaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ śalyaḥ me atirathaḥ mataḥ
yaḥ vai nityam raṇe raṇe vāsudevena spardhate
26. Śalya, the king of Madras and a great archer, is considered by me to be a great chariot warrior (atiratha). He is indeed one who constantly vies with Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in battle after battle.
भागिनेयान्निजांस्त्यक्त्वा शल्यस्ते रथसत्तमः ।
एष योत्स्यति संग्रामे कृष्णं चक्रगदाधरम् ॥२७॥
27. bhāgineyānnijāṁstyaktvā śalyaste rathasattamaḥ ,
eṣa yotsyati saṁgrāme kṛṣṇaṁ cakragadādharam.
27. bhāgineyān nijān tyaktvā śalyaḥ te rathasattamaḥ
eṣaḥ yotsyati saṃgrāme kṛṣṇam cakragadādharam
27. bhāgineyān nijān tyaktvā eṣaḥ te rathasattamaḥ
śalyaḥ saṃgrāme cakragadādharam kṛṣṇam yotsyati
27. Having abandoned his own nephews, this Śalya, the best of charioteers, will fight for you in the great battle against Kṛṣṇa, who holds the discus and the mace.
सागरोर्मिसमैर्वेगैः प्लावयन्निव शात्रवान् ।
भूरिश्रवाः कृतास्त्रश्च तव चापि हितः सुहृत् ॥२८॥
28. sāgarormisamairvegaiḥ plāvayanniva śātravān ,
bhūriśravāḥ kṛtāstraśca tava cāpi hitaḥ suhṛt.
28. sāgarormisamaiḥ vegaiḥ plāvayan iva śātravān

28. Bhūriśravas, your beneficial friend and a master of weapons (kṛtāstra), will, as if inundating them, overwhelm the enemies with forces comparable to ocean waves.
सौमदत्तिर्महेष्वासो रथयूथपयूथपः ।
बलक्षयममित्राणां सुमहान्तं करिष्यति ॥२९॥
29. saumadattirmaheṣvāso rathayūthapayūthapaḥ ,
balakṣayamamitrāṇāṁ sumahāntaṁ kariṣyati.

29. Saumadatti, the great archer (maheṣvāsa) and the chief among the leaders of chariot divisions, will bring about a very great destruction of the enemies' forces.
सिन्धुराजो महाराज मतो मे द्विगुणो रथः ।
योत्स्यते समरे राजन्विक्रान्तो रथसत्तमः ॥३०॥
30. sindhurājo mahārāja mato me dviguṇo rathaḥ ,
yotsyate samare rājanvikrānto rathasattamaḥ.

30. O great king (mahārāja), Sindhurāja is considered by me to be a warrior (ratha) with twice the strength. O king (rājan), that mighty and excellent chariot warrior (rathasattama) will fight in battle.
द्रौपदीहरणे पूर्वं परिक्लिष्टः स पाण्डवैः ।
संस्मरंस्तं परिक्लेशं योत्स्यते परवीरहा ॥३१॥
31. draupadīharaṇe pūrvaṁ parikliṣṭaḥ sa pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
saṁsmaraṁstaṁ parikleśaṁ yotsyate paravīrahā.

saṃsmaran tam parikleśam yotsyate paravīrahā

31. He, the slayer of enemy heroes (paravīrahā), who was previously tormented by the Pāṇḍavas during the abduction of Draupadī, will fight, remembering that past distress (parikleśa).
एतेन हि तदा राजंस्तप आस्थाय दारुणम् ।
सुदुर्लभो वरो लब्धः पाण्डवान्योद्धुमाहवे ॥३२॥
32. etena hi tadā rājaṁstapa āsthāya dāruṇam ,
sudurlabho varo labdhaḥ pāṇḍavānyoddhumāhave.

sudurlabhaḥ varaḥ labdhaḥ pāṇḍavān yoddhum āhave

32. Indeed, O King, by undertaking severe austerity (tapas) at that time, he obtained a very rare boon: to fight the Pāṇḍavas in battle.
स एष रथशार्दूलस्तद्वैरं संस्मरन्रणे ।
योत्स्यते पाण्डवांस्तात प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा सुदुस्त्यजान् ॥३३॥
33. sa eṣa rathaśārdūlastadvairaṁ saṁsmaranraṇe ,
yotsyate pāṇḍavāṁstāta prāṇāṁstyaktvā sudustyajān.
33. saḥ eṣaḥ rathaśārdūlaḥ tat vairam saṃsmaran raṇe
yotsyate pāṇḍavān tāta prāṇān tyaktvā sudustyajān

33. O dear one, this tiger among charioteers, remembering that enmity in battle, will fight the Pāṇḍavas, even giving up his own life, which is very difficult to abandon.
