Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Bhishma, the son of Śāntanu, who was both unassailable and valorous, rushed towards Dhananjaya (Arjuna) while the warriors were being slaughtered.

That tiger among men appeared splendid, with a white parasol held over his head, just like a mountain at sunrise.

Having loudly blown his conch and delighted the sons of Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, the son of Ganga, circled clockwise and then checked Bibhatsu (Arjuna).

Having seen him thus approaching, Kaunteya (Arjuna), the slayer of enemy heroes, whose spirit (ātman) was delighted, faced him like an immovable mountain receiving a cloud.

Then the valiant Bhishma struck eight swiftly moving arrows, hissing like snakes, into Partha (Arjuna)'s banner.

Those blazing, flying arrows, having reached the banner of Arjuna (Pāṇḍuputra), struck the ape (kapi) and also those dwelling at the top of the banner.

Then, Arjuna (Pāṇḍava), with a great, broad-edged dart, swiftly cut off Bhishma's parasol, and it immediately fell to the ground.

And indeed, Arjuna (Kaunteya) firmly struck his (Bhishma's) banner with arrows. Swiftly acting, he also struck the chariot horses and both the charioteers (pārṣṇisārathi) at the rear.

That tumultuous, hair-raising battle (yuddha) took place between those two, Bhishma and Arjuna (Pārtha), just like the one between Bali and Indra (Vāsava).

In the battle between Bhishma and the Pandavas, spears clashed with spears in the sky, shining brilliantly just like fireflies in the rainy season.

He (Arjuna) completely covered Bhishma with hundreds of sharp arrows, just as a cloud covers a mountain with streams of rain.

Bhishma, restraining Arjuna, dispersed that raised shower of arrows, which was like an agitated tide, with his own arrows.

Then, those volleys of arrows, having been cut down into pieces in battle, were scattered towards Phalguna's (Arjuna's) chariot.

16.
Then, Bhishma, with hundreds of sharp arrows, quickly dispersed that shower of golden-feathered arrows which had risen from Pāṇḍava's (Arjuna's) chariot, just like a swarm of locusts.

Then all those Kurus exclaimed, "Excellent! Excellent!" and said that Bhishma had performed a difficult feat by fighting Arjuna.

The Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) is strong, young, skillful, and swift in action. Who else is capable of checking Pārtha's (Arjuna's) impetuosity in battle?

Having parried other weapons with their own weapons, the two best among men play, bewildering the eyes of all beings, those two mighty ones.

21.
Employing the weapons of Prajāpati, and similarly the very dreadful ones of Indra and Agni, as well as those of Kubera, Varuṇa, Yama, and Vāyu, those two great-souled individuals (mahātmānau) moved about in battle.

Then, having seen those two in battle, all the astonished beings exclaimed, 'Well done, O Pārtha, mighty-armed one! Well done, O Bhīṣma!'

This great engagement of powerful weapons, which is observed in the battle between Bhishma and Arjuna, is not proper among humans.

Thus, a weapon-duel took place between the two who were skilled in all types of weapons. Then, Jishnu (Arjuna), having turned, instantly cut Bhishma's gold-adorned bow with a broad-edged (arrow).

In just a moment, the mighty-armed and very powerful Bhishma, taking another bow on the battlefield, strung it. Then, enraged, he swiftly released many arrows at Dhananjaya (Arjuna).

28.
Then, at that time, the great charioteer (atirathaḥ) Arjuna, the son of Kunti (Kaunteya), who wore a crown and garland, covered the ten directions with arrows. Likewise, the brave warrior Bhishma, son of Shantanu (Śāntanava), also did the same.

29.
O king, in that battle, it was a great wonder (adbhutam) in the world (loke) how exceedingly Arjuna, the Pāṇḍava, afflicted Bhishma, and Bhishma, in turn, exceedingly afflicted Arjuna, the Pāṇḍava.

O king, at that time, the brave chariot-guards of Bhishma, who were slain by Arjuna, the Pāṇḍava, lay all around the chariot of Arjuna, the son of Kunti (Kaunteya).

31.
Then, the feathered arrows of Arjuna (Śvetavāhana), released from his Gāṇḍīva bow, intent on making the enemy disappear, came forth.

32.
Issuing forth from his chariot, those (arrows), shining and with golden coverings, appeared in the sky like rows of swans.

Indeed, all the gods, along with Indra (Vāsava), who were situated in the sky, observed him as he discharged that mighty and wondrous divine weapon.

34.
Having seen that wondrous and astonishing thing, the mighty Gandharva Citrasena, who was exceedingly pleased, reported it to the king of gods (Devarāja).

Behold these destroyers of enemies, moving as if joined together. This is the wondrous, divine weapon of Jishnu (Arjuna) being unleashed.

Humans would not believe this, for indeed, such power does not exist among them. This is a marvelous convergence of ancient, mighty weapons.

The armies are unable to gaze upon Pāṇḍu's son (Arjuna), who is like the midday sun intensely shining in the sky.

Both are famous for their exploits, both are experts in warfare. Both perform comparable deeds, and both are unconquerable in battle.

O Bhārata, having been addressed thus, the king of the gods, Indra, then honored the meeting of Arjuna (Pārtha) and Bhishma with a divine shower of flowers.

Then Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, having fitted an arrow, struck an exposed point on the left side of the shooting Savyasācin (Arjuna).

41.
Then Bībhatsu (Arjuna), laughing aloud, cut down the bow (kārmukam) of the immensely energetic Bhishma with a broad-headed, vulture-feathered arrow.

Then Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the son of Kunti, struck him (Bhishma) - who was valiantly striving - in the chest with ten arrows.

Though formidable in battle, the mighty-armed son of Ganga (Gāṅgeya), being distressed, stood for a long time as if ailing, clutching the chariot pole.

Recalling the instructions and protecting the great warrior (mahāratha), the charioteer, who controlled the chariot horses, drove him, now unconscious, away from the battlefield.
