देव उवाच ।
कामं देवापि मां विप्र न विजानन्ति तत्त्वतः ।
त्वत्प्रीत्या तु प्रवक्ष्यामि यथेदं विसृजाम्यहम् ॥१॥

1. deva uvāca ,
kāmaṁ devāpi māṁ vipra na vijānanti tattvataḥ ,

The god said: O Brahmin, indeed, even the gods do not truly know me. But out of affection for you, I will explain how I create this universe.
पितृभक्तोऽसि विप्रर्षे मां चैव शरणं गतः ।
अतो दृष्टोऽस्मि ते साक्षाद्ब्रह्मचर्यं च ते महत् ॥२॥
अतो दृष्टोऽस्मि ते साक्षाद्ब्रह्मचर्यं च ते महत् ॥२॥
2. pitṛbhakto'si viprarṣe māṁ caiva śaraṇaṁ gataḥ ,
ato dṛṣṭo'smi te sākṣādbrahmacaryaṁ ca te mahat.
ato dṛṣṭo'smi te sākṣādbrahmacaryaṁ ca te mahat.

pitṛbhaktaḥ asi viprarṣe mām ca eva śaraṇam gataḥ
ataḥ dṛṣṭaḥ asmi te sākṣāt brahmacaryam ca te mahat
ataḥ dṛṣṭaḥ asmi te sākṣāt brahmacaryam ca te mahat

O sage among Brahmins, you are devoted to your father, and you have sought refuge (śaraṇa) in me. Therefore, I am seen by you directly, and your celibacy (brahmacarya) is great.
आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ताः संज्ञानाम कृतं मया ।
तेन नारायणोऽस्म्युक्तो मम तद्ध्ययनं सदा ॥३॥

3. āpo nārā iti proktāḥ saṁjñānāma kṛtaṁ mayā ,
tena nārāyaṇo'smyukto mama taddhyayanaṁ sadā.

The waters are called 'nāra' (nārā), and that name was given by me. Therefore, I am called Nārāyaṇa, and my constant abode (adhyayana) is in them.
अहं नारायणो नाम प्रभवः शाश्वतोऽव्ययः ।
विधाता सर्वभूतानां संहर्ता च द्विजोत्तम ॥४॥

I am Nārāyaṇa by name, the eternal, imperishable source. I am the creator and destroyer of all beings, O best of the brahmins.
अहं विष्णुरहं ब्रह्मा शक्रश्चाहं सुराधिपः ।
अहं वैश्रवणो राजा यमः प्रेताधिपस्तथा ॥५॥

5. ahaṁ viṣṇurahaṁ brahmā śakraścāhaṁ surādhipaḥ ,
ahaṁ vaiśravaṇo rājā yamaḥ pretādhipastathā.

I am Viṣṇu, I am Brahmā, and I am Śakra, the lord of the gods. I am also Vaiśravaṇa, the king, and Yama, the lord of the departed.
अहं शिवश्च सोमश्च कश्यपश्च प्रजापतिः ।
अहं धाता विधाता च यज्ञश्चाहं द्विजोत्तम ॥६॥

6. ahaṁ śivaśca somaśca kaśyapaśca prajāpatiḥ ,
ahaṁ dhātā vidhātā ca yajñaścāhaṁ dvijottama.

I am Śiva and Soma, and Kaśyapa, the lord of creation (prajāpati). I am Dhātā and Vidhātā, and I am the sacrificial rite (yajña), O best of the brahmins.
अग्निरास्यं क्षितिः पादौ चन्द्रादित्यौ च लोचने ।
सदिशं च नभः कायो वायुर्मनसि मे स्थितः ॥७॥

7. agnirāsyaṁ kṣitiḥ pādau candrādityau ca locane ,
sadiśaṁ ca nabhaḥ kāyo vāyurmanasi me sthitaḥ.
sadiśaṁ ca nabhaḥ kāyo vāyurmanasi me sthitaḥ.

agniḥ āsyam kṣitiḥ pādau candrādityau ca locane
sadiśam ca nabhaḥ kāyaḥ vāyuḥ manasi me sthitaḥ

Fire is my mouth, the earth my feet, and the moon and sun are my eyes. The sky, along with the directions, is my body, and wind (vāyu) resides in my mind.
मया क्रतुशतैरिष्टं बहुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः ।
यजन्ते वेदविदुषो मां देवयजने स्थितम् ॥८॥

8. mayā kratuśatairiṣṭaṁ bahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ,
yajante vedaviduṣo māṁ devayajane sthitam.

I have performed an offering with hundreds of sacrifices, many of which had their proper sacrificial fees (dakṣiṇā) received. Those who know the Vedas worship me, who am present at the place of divine worship (devayajana).
पृथिव्यां क्षत्रियेन्द्राश्च पार्थिवाः स्वर्गकाङ्क्षिणः ।
यजन्ते मां तथा वैश्याः स्वर्गलोकजिगीषवः ॥९॥
यजन्ते मां तथा वैश्याः स्वर्गलोकजिगीषवः ॥९॥
9. pṛthivyāṁ kṣatriyendrāśca pārthivāḥ svargakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ,
yajante māṁ tathā vaiśyāḥ svargalokajigīṣavaḥ.

On Earth, kings and prominent Kṣatriyas, desiring heaven, worship me. Similarly, Vaiśyas, wishing to conquer the heavenly realms, also worship me.
चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तां मेरुमन्दरभूषणाम् ।
शेषो भूत्वाहमेवैतां धारयामि वसुंधराम् ॥१०॥

10. catuḥsamudraparyantāṁ merumandarabhūṣaṇām ,
śeṣo bhūtvāhamevaitāṁ dhārayāmi vasuṁdharām.

Having indeed become Śeṣa, I sustain this Earth, which extends to the four oceans and is adorned by the Meru and Mandara mountains.
वाराहं रूपमास्थाय मयेयं जगती पुरा ।
मज्जमाना जले विप्र वीर्येणासीत्समुद्धृता ॥११॥

11. vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya mayeyaṁ jagatī purā ,
majjamānā jale vipra vīryeṇāsītsamuddhṛtā.

O Brahmin, formerly, by me, having assumed the boar (Vārāha) form, this Earth, which was sinking in water, was lifted up by my power.
अग्निश्च वडवावक्त्रो भूत्वाहं द्विजसत्तम ।
पिबाम्यपः समाविद्धास्ताश्चैव विसृजाम्यहम् ॥१२॥

12. agniśca vaḍavāvaktro bhūtvāhaṁ dvijasattama ,
pibāmyapaḥ samāviddhāstāścaiva visṛjāmyaham.

agniḥ ca vaḍavāvaktraḥ bhūtvā aham dvijasattama

12.
O best among the twice-born (dvija), having become the mare-mouthed fire, I drink the agitated waters, and indeed, I also release them.
ब्रह्म वक्त्रं भुजौ क्षत्रमूरू मे संश्रिता विशः ।
पादौ शूद्रा भजन्ते मे विक्रमेण क्रमेण च ॥१३॥

13. brahma vaktraṁ bhujau kṣatramūrū me saṁśritā viśaḥ ,
pādau śūdrā bhajante me vikrameṇa krameṇa ca.

The Brahmins (brahma) are my mouth, the Kṣatriyas (kṣatra) are my arms, the Vaiśyas (viś) are established in my thighs, and the Śūdras serve my feet, in due course and proper order.
ऋग्वेदः सामवेदश्च यजुर्वेदोऽप्यथर्वणः ।
मत्तः प्रादुर्भवन्त्येते मामेव प्रविशन्ति च ॥१४॥

14. ṛgvedaḥ sāmavedaśca yajurvedo'pyatharvaṇaḥ ,
mattaḥ prādurbhavantyete māmeva praviśanti ca.

ṛgvedaḥ sāmavedaḥ ca yajurvedaḥ api atharvaṇaḥ
mattaḥ prādurbhavanti ete mām eva praviśanti ca

The Ṛgveda, the Sāmaveda, the Yajurveda, and also the Atharvaveda - these appear from me and enter into me alone.
यतयः शान्तिपरमा यतात्मानो मुमुक्षवः ।
कामक्रोधद्वेषमुक्ता निःसङ्गा वीतकल्मषाः ॥१५॥
कामक्रोधद्वेषमुक्ता निःसङ्गा वीतकल्मषाः ॥१५॥
15. yatayaḥ śāntiparamā yatātmāno mumukṣavaḥ ,
kāmakrodhadveṣamuktā niḥsaṅgā vītakalmaṣāḥ.

15.
Ascetics (yati) whose supreme goal is peace, who have controlled their inner selves (ātman), who desire liberation (mokṣa), who are free from desire, anger, and hatred, who are unattached, and free from impurities.
सत्त्वस्था निरहंकारा नित्यमध्यात्मकोविदाः ।
मामेव सततं विप्राश्चिन्तयन्त उपासते ॥१६॥

16. sattvasthā nirahaṁkārā nityamadhyātmakovidāḥ ,
māmeva satataṁ viprāścintayanta upāsate.

mām eva satatam viprāḥ cintayantaḥ upāsate

16.
O Brahmins (viprāḥ), those who are established in purity (sattva), free from ego (ahaṅkāra), and constantly skilled in spiritual knowledge (adhyātma), they continuously worship and meditate upon Me alone.
अहं संवर्तको ज्योतिरहं संवर्तको यमः ।
अहं संवर्तकः सूर्यो अहं संवर्तकोऽनिलः ॥१७॥
अहं संवर्तकः सूर्यो अहं संवर्तकोऽनिलः ॥१७॥
17. ahaṁ saṁvartako jyotirahaṁ saṁvartako yamaḥ ,
ahaṁ saṁvartakaḥ sūryo ahaṁ saṁvartako'nilaḥ.
ahaṁ saṁvartakaḥ sūryo ahaṁ saṁvartako'nilaḥ.
17.
aham saṃvartakaḥ jyotiḥ aham saṃvartakaḥ yamaḥ
aham saṃvartakaḥ sūryaḥ aham saṃvartakaḥ anilaḥ
aham saṃvartakaḥ sūryaḥ aham saṃvartakaḥ anilaḥ
17.
I am the cosmic dissolver (saṃvartaka), and I am light. I am the cosmic dissolver (saṃvartaka), and I am Yama, the lord of death. I am the cosmic dissolver (saṃvartaka), and I am the Sun. I am the cosmic dissolver (saṃvartaka), and I am the wind.
तारारूपाणि दृश्यन्ते यान्येतानि नभस्तले ।
मम रूपाण्यथैतानि विद्धि त्वं द्विजसत्तम ॥१८॥
मम रूपाण्यथैतानि विद्धि त्वं द्विजसत्तम ॥१८॥
18. tārārūpāṇi dṛśyante yānyetāni nabhastale ,
mama rūpāṇyathaitāni viddhi tvaṁ dvijasattama.
mama rūpāṇyathaitāni viddhi tvaṁ dvijasattama.
18.
tārārūpāṇi dṛśyante yāni etāni nabhastale mama
rūpāṇi atha etāni viddhi tvam dvijasattama
rūpāṇi atha etāni viddhi tvam dvijasattama
18.
O best among the twice-born (dvijasattama), know that all these star-like forms (tārārūpāṇi) which are seen in the sky are indeed My own manifestations.
रत्नाकराः समुद्राश्च सर्व एव चतुर्दिशम् ।
वसनं शयनं चैव निलयं चैव विद्धि मे ॥१९॥

19. ratnākarāḥ samudrāśca sarva eva caturdiśam ,
vasanaṁ śayanaṁ caiva nilayaṁ caiva viddhi me.
vasanaṁ śayanaṁ caiva nilayaṁ caiva viddhi me.

ratnākarāḥ samudrāḥ ca sarve eva caturdiśam
vasanam śayanam ca eva nilayam ca eva viddhi me
vasanam śayanam ca eva nilayam ca eva viddhi me
19.
Know that all oceans (ratnākarāḥ) and seas (samudrāḥ) in all four directions are My clothing, My bed, and My abode.
कामं क्रोधं च हर्षं च भयं मोहं तथैव च ।
ममैव विद्धि रूपाणि सर्वाण्येतानि सत्तम ॥२०॥
ममैव विद्धि रूपाणि सर्वाण्येतानि सत्तम ॥२०॥
20. kāmaṁ krodhaṁ ca harṣaṁ ca bhayaṁ mohaṁ tathaiva ca ,
mamaiva viddhi rūpāṇi sarvāṇyetāni sattama.

kāmam krodham ca harṣam ca bhayam moham tathā eva
ca mama eva viddhi rūpāṇi sarvāṇi etāni sattama

O best of beings, know that desire, anger, joy, fear, and delusion – indeed all these forms – are truly My manifestations.
प्राप्नुवन्ति नरा विप्र यत्कृत्वा कर्मशोभनम् ।
सत्यं दानं तपश्चोग्रमहिंसा चैव जन्तुषु ॥२१॥
सत्यं दानं तपश्चोग्रमहिंसा चैव जन्तुषु ॥२१॥
21. prāpnuvanti narā vipra yatkṛtvā karmaśobhanam ,
satyaṁ dānaṁ tapaścogramahiṁsā caiva jantuṣu.
satyaṁ dānaṁ tapaścogramahiṁsā caiva jantuṣu.

prāpnuvanti narā vipra yat kṛtvā karmaśobhanam
satyam dānam tapas ca ugram ahiṃsā ca eva jantuṣu
satyam dānam tapas ca ugram ahiṃsā ca eva jantuṣu
21.
O Brahmin, by performing excellent deeds such as truthfulness (satyam), generosity (dānam), intense asceticism (tapas), and indeed non-violence (ahiṃsā) towards all living beings, people attain that.
मद्विधानेन विहिता मम देहविहारिणः ।
मयाभिभूतविज्ञाना विचेष्टन्ते न कामतः ॥२२॥
मयाभिभूतविज्ञाना विचेष्टन्ते न कामतः ॥२२॥
22. madvidhānena vihitā mama dehavihāriṇaḥ ,
mayābhibhūtavijñānā viceṣṭante na kāmataḥ.

Established by My ordinance, these embodied beings (dehavihāriṇaḥ) residing within My being, whose understanding (vijñāna) is overpowered by Me, do not act out of their own desire.
सम्यग्वेदमधीयाना यजन्तो विविधैर्मखैः ।
शान्तात्मानो जितक्रोधाः प्राप्नुवन्ति द्विजातयः ॥२३॥
शान्तात्मानो जितक्रोधाः प्राप्नुवन्ति द्विजातयः ॥२३॥
23. samyagvedamadhīyānā yajanto vividhairmakhaiḥ ,
śāntātmāno jitakrodhāḥ prāpnuvanti dvijātayaḥ.
śāntātmāno jitakrodhāḥ prāpnuvanti dvijātayaḥ.

samyak vedam adhīyānāḥ yajantaḥ vividhaiḥ makhaiḥ
śāntātmanaḥ jitakrodhāḥ prāpnuvanti dvijātayaḥ
śāntātmanaḥ jitakrodhāḥ prāpnuvanti dvijātayaḥ
23.
The twice-born (dvijātayaḥ), who thoroughly study the Veda, perform various Vedic rituals (yajña), have tranquil minds, and have conquered anger, attain [the desired goal/state].
प्राप्तुं न शक्यो यो विद्वन्नरैर्दुष्कृतकर्मभिः ।
लोभाभिभूतैः कृपणैरनार्यैरकृतात्मभिः ॥२४॥
लोभाभिभूतैः कृपणैरनार्यैरकृतात्मभिः ॥२४॥
24. prāptuṁ na śakyo yo vidvannarairduṣkṛtakarmabhiḥ ,
lobhābhibhūtaiḥ kṛpaṇairanāryairakṛtātmabhiḥ.
lobhābhibhūtaiḥ kṛpaṇairanāryairakṛtātmabhiḥ.
24.
prāptuṃ na śakyaḥ yaḥ vidvan naraiḥ duṣkṛtakarmabhiḥ
lobhābhibhūtaiḥ kṛpaṇaiḥ anāryaiḥ akṛtātmabhiḥ
lobhābhibhūtaiḥ kṛpaṇaiḥ anāryaiḥ akṛtātmabhiḥ
24.
O learned one, I cannot be attained by men whose actions (karma) are wicked, by those who are overcome by greed, by the wretched, by the ignoble, and by those who have not disciplined their self (ātman).
तं मां महाफलं विद्धि पदं सुकृतकर्मणः ।
दुष्प्रापं विप्रमूढानां मार्गं योगैर्निषेवितम् ॥२५॥

25. taṁ māṁ mahāphalaṁ viddhi padaṁ sukṛtakarmaṇaḥ ,
duṣprāpaṁ vipramūḍhānāṁ mārgaṁ yogairniṣevitam.
duṣprāpaṁ vipramūḍhānāṁ mārgaṁ yogairniṣevitam.
25.
taṃ māṃ mahāphalaṃ viddhi padaṃ sukṛtakarmaṇaḥ
duṣprāpaṃ vipramūḍhānāṃ mārgaṃ yogaiḥ niṣevitam
duṣprāpaṃ vipramūḍhānāṃ mārgaṃ yogaiḥ niṣevitam
25.
Know Me to be that great reward, the supreme state (pada) achieved by those of virtuous actions (karma). I am difficult for the utterly deluded to attain, yet I am the path served by various spiritual disciplines (yoga).
यदा यदा च धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति सत्तम ।
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥२६॥
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥२६॥
26. yadā yadā ca dharmasya glānirbhavati sattama ,
abhyutthānamadharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmyaham.
abhyutthānamadharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmyaham.

yadā yadā ca dharmasya glāniḥ bhavati sattama

Whenever there is a decline of righteousness (dharma), O best of beings, and an increase of unrighteousness (adharma), then I manifest My self (ātman).
दैत्या हिंसानुरक्ताश्च अवध्याः सुरसत्तमैः ।
राक्षसाश्चापि लोकेऽस्मिन्यदोत्पत्स्यन्ति दारुणाः ॥२७॥
राक्षसाश्चापि लोकेऽस्मिन्यदोत्पत्स्यन्ति दारुणाः ॥२७॥
27. daityā hiṁsānuraktāśca avadhyāḥ surasattamaiḥ ,
rākṣasāścāpi loke'sminyadotpatsyanti dāruṇāḥ.

And when the Daityas, who are addicted to violence, become invincible even by the best of the gods, and when dreadful Rākṣasas appear in this world...
तदाहं संप्रसूयामि गृहेषु शुभकर्मणाम् ।
प्रविष्टो मानुषं देहं सर्वं प्रशमयाम्यहम् ॥२८॥

28. tadāhaṁ saṁprasūyāmi gṛheṣu śubhakarmaṇām ,
praviṣṭo mānuṣaṁ dehaṁ sarvaṁ praśamayāmyaham.

tadā aham saṃprasūyāmi gṛheṣu śubhakarmaṇām

Then I am born (saṃprasūyāmi) in the homes of those who perform auspicious deeds (śubhakarmaṇām). Having entered (praviṣṭaḥ) a human body (deham), I completely quell all [unrighteousness].
सृष्ट्वा देवमनुष्यांश्च गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसान् ।
स्थावराणि च भूतानि संहराम्यात्ममायया ॥२९॥

29. sṛṣṭvā devamanuṣyāṁśca gandharvoragarākṣasān ,
sthāvarāṇi ca bhūtāni saṁharāmyātmamāyayā.

Having created (sṛṣṭvā) gods and humans, as well as gandharvas, nagas (uraga), and rākṣasas, and also stationary (sthāvarāṇi) beings (bhūtāni), I withdraw (saṃharāmi) [them all] by my own illusory power (māyā).
कर्मकाले पुनर्देहमनुचिन्त्य सृजाम्यहम् ।
प्रविश्य मानुषं देहं मर्यादाबन्धकारणात् ॥३०॥

30. karmakāle punardehamanucintya sṛjāmyaham ,

At the appropriate time for action (karmakāle), I again (punaḥ), having meditated (anucintya) upon the body (deham), create (sṛjāmi) it. Having entered (praviśya) a human body (deham), [I do so] for the purpose of establishing the bounds (maryādābandha) of natural law (dharma).
श्वेतः कृतयुगे वर्णः पीतस्त्रेतायुगे मम ।
रक्तो द्वापरमासाद्य कृष्णः कलियुगे तथा ॥३१॥

My color (varṇaḥ) is white (śvetaḥ) in the Kṛta age (kṛtayuge) and yellow (pītaḥ) in the Tretā age (tretāyuge). It becomes red (raktaḥ) upon reaching (āsādya) the Dvāpara age, and similarly (tathā), black (kṛṣṇaḥ) in the Kali age (kaliyuge).
त्रयो भागा ह्यधर्मस्य तस्मिन्काले भवन्त्युत ।
अन्तकाले च संप्राप्ते कालो भूत्वातिदारुणः ।
त्रैलोक्यं नाशयाम्येकः कृत्स्नं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ॥३२॥

32. trayo bhāgā hyadharmasya tasminkāle bhavantyuta ,

trailokyaṁ nāśayāmyekaḥ kṛtsnaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam.

trayaḥ bhāgāḥ hi adharmasya tasmin kāle

nāśayāmi ekaḥ kṛtsnam sthāvarajaṅgamam
bhavanti uta antakāle ca samprāpte
kālaḥ bhūtvā atidāruṇaḥ trailokyam
nāśayāmi ekaḥ kṛtsnam sthāvarajaṅgamam
32.
Indeed, three parts of unrighteousness (adharma) manifest at that time. When the end of time (kāla) arrives, having become exceedingly dreadful, I alone destroy the three worlds, including all mobile and immobile creation.
अहं त्रिवर्त्मा सर्वात्मा सर्वलोकसुखावहः ।
अभिभूः सर्वगोऽनन्तो हृषीकेश उरुक्रमः ॥३३॥

I am the one with three paths, the universal Self (ātman), and the bringer of happiness to all worlds. I am paramount, all-pervading, infinite, the master of the senses (hṛṣīkeśa), and one with great strides (urukrama).
कालचक्रं नयाम्येको ब्रह्मन्नहमरूपि वै ।
शमनं सर्वभूतानां सर्वलोककृतोद्यमम् ॥३४॥

34. kālacakraṁ nayāmyeko brahmannahamarūpi vai ,
śamanaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ sarvalokakṛtodyamam.

O Brahman, I alone set in motion the wheel of time (kāla), and I am indeed formless. I am the pacifier of all beings, and my endeavor (karma) causes all worlds.
एवं प्रणिहितः सम्यङ्मयात्मा मुनिसत्तम ।
सर्वभूतेषु विप्रेन्द्र न च मां वेत्ति कश्चन ॥३५॥

35. evaṁ praṇihitaḥ samyaṅmayātmā munisattama ,

O best of sages, O chief of Brahmins (viprendra), my self (ātman) is thus perfectly established in all beings; yet, no one truly knows me.
यच्च किंचित्त्वया प्राप्तं मयि क्लेशात्मकं द्विज ।
सुखोदयाय तत्सर्वं श्रेयसे च तवानघ ॥३६॥

36. yacca kiṁcittvayā prāptaṁ mayi kleśātmakaṁ dvija ,
sukhodayāya tatsarvaṁ śreyase ca tavānagha.

O twice-born one (dvija), whatever suffering (kleśa) you have experienced in connection with me, O sinless one, all of that is for your prosperity and ultimate welfare.
यच्च किंचित्त्वया लोके दृष्टं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
विहितः सर्वथैवासौ ममात्मा मुनिसत्तम ॥३७॥

And whatever you have seen in the world, whether stationary or moving, all of that, in every way, is indeed my own Self (ātman), O best of sages.
अर्धं मम शरीरस्य सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
अहं नारायणो नाम शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः ॥३८॥

38. ardhaṁ mama śarīrasya sarvalokapitāmahaḥ ,

The grandfather of all worlds (Brahma) constitutes half of my body. I am known as Nārāyaṇa, the wielder of the conch, discus, and mace.
यावद्युगानां विप्रर्षे सहस्रपरिवर्तनम् ।
तावत्स्वपिमि विश्वात्मा सर्वलोकपितामहः ॥३९॥

39. yāvadyugānāṁ viprarṣe sahasraparivartanam ,
tāvatsvapimi viśvātmā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ.

O Brahmin-sage (viprarṣi), for as long as there is a thousand rotations of the cosmic ages (yuga), so long do I sleep - I who am the universal Self (viśvātman) and the great-grandfather of all worlds (Brahma).
एवं सर्वमहं कालमिहासे मुनिसत्तम ।
अशिशुः शिशुरूपेण यावद्ब्रह्मा न बुध्यते ॥४०॥

40. evaṁ sarvamahaṁ kālamihāse munisattama ,

O best of sages, I dwell here throughout this entire period, appearing as a child though I am not one, until Brahmā awakens.
मया च विप्र दत्तोऽयं वरस्ते ब्रह्मरूपिणा ।
असकृत्परितुष्टेन विप्रर्षिगणपूजित ॥४१॥

41. mayā ca vipra datto'yaṁ varaste brahmarūpiṇā ,

And O Brahmin, this boon has been granted to you by Me, who embody (brahman), having been greatly pleased repeatedly. O you who are revered by multitudes of brahmin sages.
सर्वमेकार्णवं दृष्ट्वा नष्टं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
विक्लवोऽसि मया ज्ञातस्ततस्ते दर्शितं जगत् ॥४२॥

42. sarvamekārṇavaṁ dṛṣṭvā naṣṭaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam ,
viklavo'si mayā jñātastataste darśitaṁ jagat.

Seeing everything - the stationary and moving (beings) - destroyed and submerged in a single cosmic ocean, you became distressed. I knew this, and therefore the universe was revealed to you.
अभ्यन्तरं शरीरस्य प्रविष्टोऽसि यदा मम ।
दृष्ट्वा लोकं समस्तं च विस्मितो नावबुध्यसे ॥४३॥

43. abhyantaraṁ śarīrasya praviṣṭo'si yadā mama ,
dṛṣṭvā lokaṁ samastaṁ ca vismito nāvabudhyase.

When you entered inside My body, you saw the entire world and became astonished, yet you did not comprehend (māyā) it.
ततोऽसि वक्त्राद्विप्रर्षे द्रुतं निःसारितो मया ।
आख्यातस्ते मया चात्मा दुर्ज्ञेयोऽपि सुरासुरैः ॥४४॥
आख्यातस्ते मया चात्मा दुर्ज्ञेयोऽपि सुरासुरैः ॥४४॥
44. tato'si vaktrādviprarṣe drutaṁ niḥsārito mayā ,
ākhyātaste mayā cātmā durjñeyo'pi surāsuraiḥ.

tataḥ asi vaktrāt viprarṣe drutam niḥsāritaḥ mayā
ākhyātaḥ te mayā ca ātmā durjñeyaḥ api surāsuraiḥ

Therefore, O brahmin-sage (viprarṣe), I swiftly expelled you from my mouth. And I also explained to you the self (ātman), which is difficult for even gods and asuras to understand.
यावत्स भगवान्ब्रह्मा न बुध्यति महातपाः ।
तावत्त्वमिह विप्रर्षे विश्रब्धश्चर वै सुखम् ॥४५॥
तावत्त्वमिह विप्रर्षे विश्रब्धश्चर वै सुखम् ॥४५॥
45. yāvatsa bhagavānbrahmā na budhyati mahātapāḥ ,
tāvattvamiha viprarṣe viśrabdhaścara vai sukham.

yāvat sa bhagavān brahmā na budhyati mahātapaḥ
tāvat tvam iha viprarṣe viśrabdhaḥ cara vai sukham

As long as that revered Brahmā, the great ascetic (mahātapas), does not awaken, O brahmin-sage (viprarṣe), you may confidently move about happily here.
ततो विबुद्धे तस्मिंस्तु सर्वलोकपितामहे ।
एकीभूतो हि स्रक्ष्यामि शरीराद्द्विजसत्तम ॥४६॥
एकीभूतो हि स्रक्ष्यामि शरीराद्द्विजसत्तम ॥४६॥
46. tato vibuddhe tasmiṁstu sarvalokapitāmahe ,
ekībhūto hi srakṣyāmi śarīrāddvijasattama.

Then, when that grandfather of all worlds (sarvalokapitāmaha) awakens, O best of brahmins (dvijasattama), I will indeed create [the world] from my body, having become one [with him].
आकाशं पृथिवीं ज्योतिर्वायुं सलिलमेव च ।
लोके यच्च भवेच्छेषमिह स्थावरजङ्गमम् ॥४७॥

47. ākāśaṁ pṛthivīṁ jyotirvāyuṁ salilameva ca ,
loke yacca bhaveccheṣamiha sthāvarajaṅgamam.

I will create the sky, the earth, light, air, and water, as well as whatever else, both moving and unmoving, exists in this world.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितस्तात स देवः परमाद्भुतः ।
प्रजाश्चेमाः प्रपश्यामि विचित्रा बहुधाकृताः ॥४८॥

48. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
ityuktvāntarhitastāta sa devaḥ paramādbhutaḥ ,
prajāścemāḥ prapaśyāmi vicitrā bahudhākṛtāḥ.

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | iti uktvā antarhitaḥ tāta sa devaḥ

48.
Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Having spoken thus, dear child, that supremely wonderful god disappeared. And I clearly behold these manifold and diverse creatures."
एतद्दृष्टं मया राजंस्तस्मिन्प्राप्ते युगक्षये ।
आश्चर्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ सर्वधर्मभृतां वर ॥४९॥

49. etaddṛṣṭaṁ mayā rājaṁstasminprāpte yugakṣaye ,
āścaryaṁ bharataśreṣṭha sarvadharmabhṛtāṁ vara.

O King, best of the Bhāratas, and foremost among all upholders of natural law (dharma), this astonishing event was seen by me when that dissolution of the cosmic age (yuga-kṣaya) occurred.
यः स देवो मया दृष्टः पुरा पद्मनिभेक्षणः ।
स एष पुरुषव्याघ्र संबन्धी ते जनार्दनः ॥५०॥

50. yaḥ sa devo mayā dṛṣṭaḥ purā padmanibhekṣaṇaḥ ,

O tiger among men, that lotus-eyed god whom I saw formerly, He indeed is this Janārdana, your relative.
अस्यैव वरदानाद्धि स्मृतिर्न प्रजहाति माम् ।
दीर्घमायुश्च कौन्तेय स्वच्छन्दमरणं तथा ॥५१॥
दीर्घमायुश्च कौन्तेय स्वच्छन्दमरणं तथा ॥५१॥
51. asyaiva varadānāddhi smṛtirna prajahāti mām ,
dīrghamāyuśca kaunteya svacchandamaraṇaṁ tathā.

Indeed, due to his (Janārdana's) boon alone, my memory (smṛti) does not abandon me, and similarly, O son of Kuntī, I have a long life and the power of death at will.

This Krishna, born in the Vṛṣṇi clan, is indeed that ancient Person (puruṣa), the all-pervading, mighty Hari, whose nature (ātman) is beyond comprehension. He simply exists, as if engaging in a cosmic play, the great-armed one.

This very one is the creator, the ordainer, and also the destroyer; He is the virtuous (sātvata) one, Govinda, whose chest bears the Śrīvatsa mark, the Lord of the Prajāpatis, the Supreme Master.

Having seen this lion among the Vṛṣṇis, this memory has come to me (that he is) the primeval deity, the unborn Vishnu, the cosmic Person (puruṣa), adorned in yellow garments.

गच्छध्वमेनं शरणं शरण्यं कौरवर्षभाः ॥५५॥
