वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः संनादयञ्शक्रो दिवं भूमिं च सर्वशः ।
रथेनोपययौ पार्थमारोहेत्यब्रवीच्च तम् ॥१॥

tataḥ saṁnādayañśakro divaṁ bhūmiṁ ca sarvaśaḥ ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Indra (Śakra), making the sky and earth resound completely, approached Pārtha (Arjuna) on his chariot and told him, 'Ascend!'
स भ्रातॄन्पतितान्दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
अब्रवीच्छोकसंतप्तः सहस्राक्षमिदं वचः ॥२॥
2. sa bhrātṝnpatitāndṛṣṭvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
abravīcchokasaṁtaptaḥ sahasrākṣamidaṁ vacaḥ.

2. Seeing his brothers fallen, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the upholder of natural law (dharma), overwhelmed by sorrow, spoke these words to Sahasrākṣa (Indra).
भ्रातरः पतिता मेऽत्र आगच्छेयुर्मया सह ।
न विना भ्रातृभिः स्वर्गमिच्छे गन्तुं सुरेश्वर ॥३॥
3. bhrātaraḥ patitā me'tra āgaccheyurmayā saha ,
na vinā bhrātṛbhiḥ svargamicche gantuṁ sureśvara.
3. bhrātaraḥ patitāḥ me atra āgaccheyuḥ mayā saha na
vinā bhrātṛbhiḥ svargam icche gantum sura-īśvara

3. My brothers, who have fallen here, should come with me. I do not wish to go to heaven without my brothers, O Lord of gods (Indra).
सुकुमारी सुखार्हा च राजपुत्री पुरंदर ।
सास्माभिः सह गच्छेत तद्भवाननुमन्यताम् ॥४॥
4. sukumārī sukhārhā ca rājaputrī puraṁdara ,
sāsmābhiḥ saha gaccheta tadbhavānanumanyatām.
4. sukumārī sukha-arhā ca rāja-putrī purandara sā
asmābhiḥ saha gaccheta tat bhavān anumaṃyatām
4. ca sukumārī sukha-arhā rāja-putrī sā purandara
asmābhiḥ saha gaccheta bhavān tat anumaṃyatām
4. And the princess (Draupadī), delicate and accustomed to comfort, O Purandara (Indra), should go with us. Please approve of that.
इन्द्र उवाच ।
भ्रातॄन्द्रक्ष्यसि पुत्रांस्त्वमग्रतस्त्रिदिवं गतान् ।
कृष्णया सहितान्सर्वान्मा शुचो भरतर्षभ ॥५॥
5. indra uvāca ,
bhrātṝndrakṣyasi putrāṁstvamagratastridivaṁ gatān ,
kṛṣṇayā sahitānsarvānmā śuco bharatarṣabha.
5. indraḥ uvāca bhrātṝn drakṣyasi putrān tvam agrataḥ tridivam
gatān kṛṣṇayā sahitān sarvān mā śucaḥ bharatarṣabha
5. indraḥ uvāca bharatarṣabha tvam agrataḥ tridivam gatān
kṛṣṇayā sahitān sarvān bhrātṝn putrān drakṣyasi mā śucaḥ
5. Indra said: 'O best among the Bharatas, you will see your brothers and sons who have gone to heaven before you, all of them accompanied by Draupadi (kṛṣṇā). Do not grieve.'
निक्षिप्य मानुषं देहं गतास्ते भरतर्षभ ।
अनेन त्वं शरीरेण स्वर्गं गन्ता न संशयः ॥६॥
6. nikṣipya mānuṣaṁ dehaṁ gatāste bharatarṣabha ,
anena tvaṁ śarīreṇa svargaṁ gantā na saṁśayaḥ.
6. nikṣipya mānuṣam deham gatāḥ te bharatarṣabha
anena tvam śarīreṇa svargam gantā na saṃśayaḥ
6. bharatarṣabha te mānuṣam deham nikṣipya gatāḥ
tvam anena śarīreṇa svargam gantā na saṃśayaḥ
6. O best among the Bharatas, they have cast off their human bodies and departed. You, with this very body, will go to heaven; there is no doubt about this.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अयं श्वा भूतभव्येश भक्तो मां नित्यमेव ह ।
स गच्छेत मया सार्धमानृशंस्या हि मे मतिः ॥७॥
7. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ayaṁ śvā bhūtabhavyeśa bhakto māṁ nityameva ha ,
sa gaccheta mayā sārdhamānṛśaṁsyā hi me matiḥ.
7. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca ayam śvā bhūtabhavyeśa bhaktaḥ mām nityam
eva ha saḥ gaccheta mayā sārdham ānṛśaṃsyā hi me matiḥ
7. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca bhūtabhavyeśa ayam śvā nityam eva mām
bhaktaḥ ha saḥ mayā sārdham gaccheta hi ānṛśaṃsyā me matiḥ
7. Yudhishthira said: 'O Lord of past and future, this dog has always been devoted to me. He should indeed go with me, for compassion (ānṛśaṃsya) is my inclination.'
इन्द्र उवाच ।
अमर्त्यत्वं मत्समत्वं च राजञ्श्रियं कृत्स्नां महतीं चैव कीर्तिम् ।
संप्राप्तोऽद्य स्वर्गसुखानि च त्वं त्यज श्वानं नात्र नृशंसमस्ति ॥८॥
8. indra uvāca ,
amartyatvaṁ matsamatvaṁ ca rāja;ñśriyaṁ kṛtsnāṁ mahatīṁ caiva kīrtim ,
saṁprāpto'dya svargasukhāni ca tvaṁ; tyaja śvānaṁ nātra nṛśaṁsamasti.
8. indraḥ uvāca amartyatvam matsamatvam ca
rājan śriyam kṛtsnām mahatīm ca eva
kīrtim samprāptaḥ adya svargasukhāni ca
tvam tyaja śvānam na atra nṛśaṃsam asti
8. indraḥ uvāca rājan tvam adya amartyatvam
matsamatvam ca kṛtsnām mahatīm śriyam
ca eva kīrtim svargasukhāni ca
samprāptaḥ śvānam tyaja atra nṛśaṃsam na asti
8. Indra said: 'O king, you have today attained immortality, equality with me, complete and great glory, and also heavenly pleasures. Abandon the dog; there is no cruelty (nṛśaṃsa) in this.'
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अनार्यमार्येण सहस्रनेत्र शक्यं कर्तुं दुष्करमेतदार्य ।
मा मे श्रिया संगमनं तयास्तु यस्याः कृते भक्तजनं त्यजेयम् ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
anāryamāryeṇa sahasranetra; śakyaṁ kartuṁ duṣkarametadārya ,
mā me śriyā saṁgamanaṁ tayāstu; yasyāḥ kṛte bhaktajanaṁ tyajeyam.
9. Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca anāryam āryeṇa
sahasranetra śakyam kartum duṣkaram etat
ārya mā me śriyā saṅgamanam tayā
astu yasyāḥ kṛte bhaktajanam tyajeyam
9. Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca sahasranetra ārya
etat anāryam duṣkaram āryeṇa kartum
śakyam yasyāḥ kṛte bhaktajanam tyajeyam
tayā me śriyā saṅgamanam mā astu
9. Yudhishthira said: "O thousand-eyed Indra, it is an ignoble act, though difficult, for a noble person to perform. May I not attain prosperity (śrī) through an act for the sake of which I would abandon a loyal companion."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
स्वर्गे लोके श्ववतां नास्ति धिष्ण्यमिष्टापूर्तं क्रोधवशा हरन्ति ।
ततो विचार्य क्रियतां धर्मराज त्यज श्वानं नात्र नृशंसमस्ति ॥१०॥
10. indra uvāca ,
svarge loke śvavatāṁ nāsti dhiṣṇya;miṣṭāpūrtaṁ krodhavaśā haranti ,
tato vicārya kriyatāṁ dharmarāja; tyaja śvānaṁ nātra nṛśaṁsamasti.
10. Indra uvāca svarge loke śvavatām na
asti dhiṣṇyam iṣṭāpūrtam krodhavaśāḥ
haranti tataḥ vicārya kriyatām dharmarāja
tyaja śvānam na atra nṛśaṃsam asti
10. Indra uvāca svarge loke śvavatām dhiṣṇyam
na asti krodhavaśāḥ iṣṭāpūrtam
haranti tataḥ dharmarāja vicārya kriyatām
śvānam tyaja atra nṛśaṃsam na asti
10. Indra said: "In the celestial world (svarga loka), there is no abode for those with dogs. Their angry presence nullifies the merit acquired from Vedic rituals (iṣṭa) and charitable deeds (pūrta). Therefore, O king of righteousness (dharma-rāja), consider this and abandon the dog; there is no act of cruelty (nṛśaṃsa) in doing so."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
भक्तत्यागं प्राहुरत्यन्तपापं तुल्यं लोके ब्रह्मवध्याकृतेन ।
तस्मान्नाहं जातु कथंचनाद्य त्यक्ष्याम्येनं स्वसुखार्थी महेन्द्र ॥११॥
11. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
bhaktatyāgaṁ prāhuratyantapāpaṁ; tulyaṁ loke brahmavadhyākṛtena ,
tasmānnāhaṁ jātu kathaṁcanādya; tyakṣyāmyenaṁ svasukhārthī mahendra.
11. Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca bhaktatyāgam prāhuḥ
atyantapāpam tulyam loke brahmavadhyākṛtena
tasmāt na aham jātu kathaṃcana
adya tyakṣyāmi enam svasukhārthī mahendra
11. Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca bhaktatyāgam atyantapāpam
prāhuḥ loke brahmavadhyākṛtena
tulyam tasmāt mahendra aham svasukhārthī
enam adya jātu kathaṃcana na tyakṣyāmi
11. Yudhishthira said: "Abandoning a loyal companion is proclaimed to be an extremely grave sin (pāpa), equivalent in the world to the act of slaying a brahmin. Therefore, O great Indra, I will never, by any means, abandon him today for the sake of my own happiness."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
शुना दृष्टं क्रोधवशा हरन्ति यद्दत्तमिष्टं विवृतमथो हुतं च ।
तस्माच्छुनस्त्यागमिमं कुरुष्व शुनस्त्यागात्प्राप्स्यसे देवलोकम् ॥१२॥
12. indra uvāca ,
śunā dṛṣṭaṁ krodhavaśā haranti; yaddattamiṣṭaṁ vivṛtamatho hutaṁ ca ,
tasmācchunastyāgamimaṁ kuruṣva; śunastyāgātprāpsyase devalokam.
12. Indra uvāca śunā dṛṣṭam krodhavaśāḥ
haranti yat dattam iṣṭam vivṛtam atho
hutam ca tasmāt śunaḥ tyāgam imam
kuruṣva śunaḥ tyāgāt prāpsyase devalokam
12. Indra uvāca yat dattam iṣṭam vivṛtam
atho hutam ca śunā dṛṣṭam krodhavaśāḥ
haranti tasmāt imam śunaḥ tyāgam
kuruṣva śunaḥ tyāgāt devalokam prāpsyase
12. Indra said: "Whatever has been given, offered in a Vedic ritual (iṣṭa), publicly declared, or offered into the fire (huta) – all of it, when seen by a dog, is seized and rendered ineffective by their inherent nature of anger. Therefore, you must abandon this dog. By abandoning the dog, you will attain the realm of the gods (devaloka)."
त्यक्त्वा भ्रातॄन्दयितां चापि कृष्णां प्राप्तो लोकः कर्मणा स्वेन वीर ।
श्वानं चैनं न त्यजसे कथं नु त्यागं कृत्स्नं चास्थितो मुह्यसेऽद्य ॥१३॥
13. tyaktvā bhrātṝndayitāṁ cāpi kṛṣṇāṁ; prāpto lokaḥ karmaṇā svena vīra ,
śvānaṁ cainaṁ na tyajase kathaṁ nu; tyāgaṁ kṛtsnaṁ cāsthito muhyase'dya.
13. tyaktvā bhrātṝn dayitām ca api kṛṣṇām
prāptaḥ lokaḥ karmaṇā svena vīra
śvānam ca enam na tyajase katham nu
tyāgam kṛtsnam ca āsthitaḥ muhyase adya
13. vīra bhrātṝn dayitām ca api kṛṣṇām
tyaktvā svena karmaṇā lokaḥ prāptaḥ
ca enam śvānam katham na tyajase nu
kṛtsnam tyāgam āsthitaḥ adya muhyase
13. O hero, having abandoned your brothers and even your beloved Krishnaa (Draupadi), you achieved your goal (loka) by your own deeds (karma). Why, then, having embraced complete renunciation (tyāga), do you not forsake this dog? And why are you bewildered now?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
न विद्यते संधिरथापि विग्रहो मृतैर्मर्त्यैरिति लोकेषु निष्ठा ।
न ते मया जीवयितुं हि शक्या तस्मात्त्यागस्तेषु कृतो न जीवताम् ॥१४॥
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
na vidyate saṁdhirathāpi vigraho; mṛtairmartyairiti lokeṣu niṣṭhā ,
na te mayā jīvayituṁ hi śakyā; tasmāttyāgasteṣu kṛto na jīvatām.
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca na vidyate sandhiḥ
atha api vigrahaḥ mṛtaiḥ martyaiḥ iti
lokeṣu niṣṭhā na te mayā jīvayitum hi
śakyā tasmāt tyāgaḥ teṣu kṛtaḥ na jīvatām
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca mṛtaiḥ martyaiḥ sandhiḥ
atha api vigrahaḥ na vidyate iti
lokeṣu niṣṭhā hi te mayā jīvayitum na
śakyā tasmāt tyāgaḥ teṣu kṛtaḥ na jīvatām
14. Yudhishthira said: "There is no possibility of alliance or conflict with dead mortals; this is an established truth in the world. Indeed, I cannot bring them back to life. Therefore, my abandonment was directed towards them, as they were not among the living."
प्रतिप्रदानं शरणागतस्य स्त्रिया वधो ब्राह्मणस्वापहारः ।
मित्रद्रोहस्तानि चत्वारि शक्र भक्तत्यागश्चैव समो मतो मे ॥१५॥
15. pratipradānaṁ śaraṇāgatasya; striyā vadho brāhmaṇasvāpahāraḥ ,
mitradrohastāni catvāri śakra; bhaktatyāgaścaiva samo mato me.
15. pratipradānam śaraṇāgatasya striyāḥ
vadhaḥ brāhmaṇasva apahāraḥ
mitradrohaḥ tāni catvāri śakra
bhaktatyāgaḥ ca eva samaḥ mataḥ me
15. śakra śaraṇāgatasya pratipradānam
striyāḥ vadhaḥ brāhmaṇasva
apahāraḥ mitradrohaḥ ca eva bhakta
tyāgaḥ tāni catvāri me samaḥ mataḥ
15. O Indra (śakra), abandoning one who has sought refuge (śaraṇāgata), the killing of a woman, misappropriating the property of a brahmin, and betraying a friend - these four (sins), and indeed the abandonment of a devotee (bhakta), are considered equal by me.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तद्धर्मराजस्य वचो निशम्य धर्मस्वरूपी भगवानुवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरं प्रीतियुक्तो नरेन्द्रं श्लक्ष्णैर्वाक्यैः संस्तवसंप्रयुक्तैः ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
taddharmarājasya vaco niśamya; dharmasvarūpī bhagavānuvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ prītiyukto narendraṁ; ślakṣṇairvākyaiḥ saṁstavasaṁprayuktaiḥ.
16. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tat dharma rājasya
vacaḥ niśamya dharma svarūpī bhagavān
uvāca yudhiṣṭhiram prīti yuktaḥ narendraṃ
ślakṣṇaiḥ vākyaiḥ saṃstava saṃprayuktaiḥ
16. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tat dharma rājasya
vacaḥ niśamya dharma svarūpī bhagavān
prīti yuktaḥ narendraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram saṃstava
saṃprayuktaiḥ ślakṣṇaiḥ vākyaiḥ uvāca
16. Vaishampayana said: "Having heard those words of Yudhishthira, the king of natural law (dharma-rāja), the revered one (bhagavān), who embodied (dharma), being filled with affection, spoke to King Yudhishthira with gentle words accompanied by praise."
अभिजातोऽसि राजेन्द्र पितुर्वृत्तेन मेधया ।
अनुक्रोशेन चानेन सर्वभूतेषु भारत ॥१७॥
17. abhijāto'si rājendra piturvṛttena medhayā ,
anukrośena cānena sarvabhūteṣu bhārata.

anukrośena ca anena sarvabhūteṣu bhārata
17. rājendra bhārata pituḥ vṛttena medhayā anena

17. O best of kings (rājendra), O Bhārata, you are truly nobly born because of your father's character, your intelligence, and this compassion you have for all beings.
पुरा द्वैतवने चासि मया पुत्र परीक्षितः ।
पानीयार्थे पराक्रान्ता यत्र ते भ्रातरो हताः ॥१८॥
18. purā dvaitavane cāsi mayā putra parīkṣitaḥ ,
pānīyārthe parākrāntā yatra te bhrātaro hatāḥ.
18. purā dvaitavane ca asi mayā putra parīkṣitaḥ
pānīyārthe parākrāntāḥ yatra te bhrātaraḥ hatāḥ
18. putra purā dvaitavane ca mayā parīkṣitaḥ asi

18. O son, you were tested by me long ago in the Dvaita forest, where your brothers, having struggled for water, lay struck down.
भीमार्जुनौ परित्यज्य यत्र त्वं भ्रातरावुभौ ।
मात्रोः साम्यमभीप्सन्वै नकुलं जीवमिच्छसि ॥१९॥
19. bhīmārjunau parityajya yatra tvaṁ bhrātarāvubhau ,
mātroḥ sāmyamabhīpsanvai nakulaṁ jīvamicchasi.
19. bhīmārjunau parityajya yatra tvam bhrātarau ubhau
mātroḥ sāmyam abhīpsan vai nakulam jīvam icchasi
19. yatra tvam mātroḥ sāmyam abhīpsan vai bhīmārjunau
ubhau bhrātarau parityajya nakulam jīvam icchasi
19. There, desiring equality for both mothers, you chose Nakula to live, forsaking both brothers, Bhīma and Arjuna.
अयं श्वा भक्त इत्येव त्यक्तो देवरथस्त्वया ।
तस्मात्स्वर्गे न ते तुल्यः कश्चिदस्ति नराधिप ॥२०॥
20. ayaṁ śvā bhakta ityeva tyakto devarathastvayā ,
tasmātsvarge na te tulyaḥ kaścidasti narādhipa.
20. ayam śvā bhaktaḥ iti eva tyaktaḥ devarathaḥ tvayā
tasmāt svarge na te tulyaḥ kaścit asti narādhipa
20. narādhipa ayam śvā bhaktaḥ iti eva tvayā devarathaḥ
tyaktaḥ tasmāt svarge te tulyaḥ kaścit na asti
20. You abandoned the divine chariot simply because you recognized, 'this dog is devoted.' Therefore, O ruler of men, no one in heaven is comparable to you.
अतस्तवाक्षया लोकाः स्वशरीरेण भारत ।
प्राप्तोऽसि भरतश्रेष्ठ दिव्यां गतिमनुत्तमाम् ॥२१॥
21. atastavākṣayā lokāḥ svaśarīreṇa bhārata ,
prāpto'si bharataśreṣṭha divyāṁ gatimanuttamām.
21. ataḥ tava akṣayāḥ lokāḥ svaśarīreṇa bhārata
prāptaḥ asi bharataśreṣṭha divyām gatim anuttamām
21. Therefore, O descendant of Bhārata, you have attained imperishable realms in your own body. O best of the Bhāratas, you have achieved an unsurpassed divine destination.
ततो धर्मश्च शक्रश्च मरुतश्चाश्विनावपि ।
देवा देवर्षयश्चैव रथमारोप्य पाण्डवम् ॥२२॥
22. tato dharmaśca śakraśca marutaścāśvināvapi ,
devā devarṣayaścaiva rathamāropya pāṇḍavam.
22. tataḥ dharmaḥ ca śakraḥ ca marutaḥ ca aśvinau api
devāḥ devarṣayaḥ ca eva ratham āropya pāṇḍavam
22. Then, the god of natural law (dharma), Śakra (Indra), the Maruts, and the two Aśvins, as well as the gods and divine sages, having placed the son of Pāṇḍu (Yudhiṣṭhira) upon a chariot...
प्रययुः स्वैर्विमानैस्ते सिद्धाः कामविहारिणः ।
सर्वे विरजसः पुण्याः पुण्यवाग्बुद्धिकर्मिणः ॥२३॥
23. prayayuḥ svairvimānaiste siddhāḥ kāmavihāriṇaḥ ,
sarve virajasaḥ puṇyāḥ puṇyavāgbuddhikarmiṇaḥ.
23. prayayuḥ svaiḥ vimānaiḥ te siddhāḥ kāmavihāriṇaḥ
sarve virajasaḥ puṇyāḥ puṇyavāgbuddhikarmiṇaḥ
23. ...they departed in their own celestial vehicles – these perfected beings who move at will. All were free from impurity, virtuous, and acted with pure speech, intellect, and deeds.
स तं रथं समास्थाय राजा कुरुकुलोद्वहः ।
ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे शीघ्रं तेजसावृत्य रोदसी ॥२४॥
24. sa taṁ rathaṁ samāsthāya rājā kurukulodvahaḥ ,
ūrdhvamācakrame śīghraṁ tejasāvṛtya rodasī.
24. saḥ tam ratham samāsthāya rājā kurukulodvahaḥ
ūrdhvam ācakrame śīghram tejasā āvṛtya rodasī
24. Having mounted that chariot, he, the king, the upholder of the Kuru lineage, quickly ascended upwards, enveloping both heaven and earth with his splendor.
ततो देवनिकायस्थो नारदः सर्वलोकवित् ।
उवाचोच्चैस्तदा वाक्यं बृहद्वादी बृहत्तपाः ॥२५॥
25. tato devanikāyastho nāradaḥ sarvalokavit ,
uvācoccaistadā vākyaṁ bṛhadvādī bṛhattapāḥ.
25. tataḥ deva-nikāya-sthaḥ nāradaḥ sarva-loka-vit
uvāca uccaiḥ tadā vākyam bṛhat-vādī bṛhat-tapāḥ
25. Then, Narada, who was present in the assembly of gods, a knower of all worlds, a great orator, and one possessing immense austerities (tapas), spoke loudly.
येऽपि राजर्षयः सर्वे ते चापि समुपस्थिताः ।
कीर्तिं प्रच्छाद्य तेषां वै कुरुराजोऽधितिष्ठति ॥२६॥
26. ye'pi rājarṣayaḥ sarve te cāpi samupasthitāḥ ,
kīrtiṁ pracchādya teṣāṁ vai kururājo'dhitiṣṭhati.
26. ye api rāja-ṛṣayaḥ sarve te ca api samupasthitāḥ
kīrtim pracchādya teṣām vai kuru-rājaḥ adhitiṣṭhati
26. Indeed, the King of the Kurus (Yudhishthira) surpasses all those royal sages who are present, by overshadowing their fame.
लोकानावृत्य यशसा तेजसा वृत्तसंपदा ।
स्वशरीरेण संप्राप्तं नान्यं शुश्रुम पाण्डवात् ॥२७॥
27. lokānāvṛtya yaśasā tejasā vṛttasaṁpadā ,
svaśarīreṇa saṁprāptaṁ nānyaṁ śuśruma pāṇḍavāt.
27. lokān āvṛtya yaśasā tejasā vṛtta-sampadā
sva-śarīreṇa samprāptam na anyam śuśruma pāṇḍavāt
27. We have not heard of anyone other than the Pandava who, by his own person, pervaded the worlds with such fame, splendor, and abundance of good conduct.
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ।
देवानामन्त्र्य धर्मात्मा स्वपक्षांश्चैव पार्थिवान् ॥२८॥
28. nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā rājā vacanamabravīt ,
devānāmantrya dharmātmā svapakṣāṁścaiva pārthivān.
28. nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā rājā vacanam abravīt devān
āmantrya dharma-ātmā sva-pakṣān ca eva pārthivān
28. Having heard Narada's speech, the king, who possessed a righteous nature (dharma), spoke, addressing both the gods and his own allied kings.
शुभं वा यदि वा पापं भ्रातॄणां स्थानमद्य मे ।
तदेव प्राप्तुमिच्छामि लोकानन्यान्न कामये ॥२९॥
29. śubhaṁ vā yadi vā pāpaṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ sthānamadya me ,
tadeva prāptumicchāmi lokānanyānna kāmaye.
29. śubham vā yadi vā pāpam bhrātṝṇām sthānam adya
me tat eva prāptum icchāmi lokān anyān na kāmaye
29. yadi vā śubham vā pāpam bhrātṝṇām sthānam adya
me tat eva prāptum icchāmi anyān lokān na kāmaye
29. Whether it is good or bad, the abode of my brothers is mine today. I desire to attain that very place; I do not wish for any other worlds.
राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा देवराजः पुरंदरः ।
आनृशंस्यसमायुक्तं प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३०॥
30. rājñastu vacanaṁ śrutvā devarājaḥ puraṁdaraḥ ,
ānṛśaṁsyasamāyuktaṁ pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram.
30. rājñaḥ tu vacanam śrutvā devarājaḥ purandaraḥ
ānṛśaṃsyasamāyuktam pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram
30. rājñaḥ vacanam śrutvā,
ānṛśaṃsyasamāyuktam devarājaḥ purandaraḥ yudhiṣṭhiram pratyuvāca
30. Having heard the words of the king, the chief of the gods (devarāja), Purandara (Indra), filled with compassion, replied to Yudhiṣṭhira.
स्थानेऽस्मिन्वस राजेन्द्र कर्मभिर्निर्जिते शुभैः ।
किं त्वं मानुष्यकं स्नेहमद्यापि परिकर्षसि ॥३१॥
31. sthāne'sminvasa rājendra karmabhirnirjite śubhaiḥ ,
kiṁ tvaṁ mānuṣyakaṁ snehamadyāpi parikarṣasi.
31. sthāne asmin vasa rājendra karmabhiḥ nirjite śubhaiḥ
kim tvam mānuṣyakam sneham adya api parikarṣasi
31. rājendra! asmin śubhaiḥ karmabhiḥ nirjite sthāne vasa.
kim tvam adya api mānuṣyakam sneham parikarṣasi?
31. O king (rājendra), reside in this realm, which has been won through virtuous deeds (karma). Why do you still cling to human affection even now?
सिद्धिं प्राप्तोऽसि परमां यथा नान्यः पुमान्क्वचित् ।
नैव ते भ्रातरः स्थानं संप्राप्ताः कुरुनन्दन ॥३२॥
32. siddhiṁ prāpto'si paramāṁ yathā nānyaḥ pumānkvacit ,
naiva te bhrātaraḥ sthānaṁ saṁprāptāḥ kurunandana.
32. siddhim prāptaḥ asi paramām yathā na anyaḥ pumān kvacit
na eva te bhrātaraḥ sthānam samprāptāḥ kurunandana
32. kurunandana! tvam paramām siddhim prāptaḥ asi,
yathā anyaḥ pumān kvacit na (prāptaḥ).
te bhrātaraḥ sthānam na eva samprāptāḥ.
32. You have attained the supreme accomplishment (siddhi), such as no other person has ever achieved anywhere. Indeed, your brothers, O scion of the Kurus (kurunandana), have not reached this realm.
अद्यापि मानुषो भावः स्पृशते त्वां नराधिप ।
स्वर्गोऽयं पश्य देवर्षीन्सिद्धांश्च त्रिदिवालयान् ॥३३॥
33. adyāpi mānuṣo bhāvaḥ spṛśate tvāṁ narādhipa ,
svargo'yaṁ paśya devarṣīnsiddhāṁśca tridivālayān.
33. adya api mānuṣaḥ bhāvaḥ spṛśate tvām narādhipa
svargaḥ ayam paśya devarṣīn siddhān ca tridivālayān
33. O narādhipa,
adya api mānuṣaḥ bhāvaḥ tvām spṛśate.
ayam svargaḥ.
devarṣīn siddhān ca tridivālayān paśya.
33. Even now, a human sentiment affects you, O ruler of men. This is heaven; behold the divine sages and the perfected beings residing in the celestial realms.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु देवेन्द्रमेवंवादिनमीश्वरम् ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्धीमानिदं वचनमर्थवत् ॥३४॥
34. yudhiṣṭhirastu devendramevaṁvādinamīśvaram ,
punarevābravīddhīmānidaṁ vacanamarthavat.
34. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu devendram evam vādinam īśvaram
punaḥ eva abravīt dhīmān idam vacanam arthavat
34. tu dhīmān yudhiṣṭhiraḥ evam vādinam īśvaram devendram punaḥ eva idam arthavat vacanam abravīt.
34. However, the wise Yudhishthira again spoke these meaningful words to Devendra, the lord, who was speaking in this manner.
तैर्विना नोत्सहे वस्तुमिह दैत्यनिबर्हण ।
गन्तुमिच्छामि तत्राहं यत्र मे भ्रातरो गताः ॥३५॥
35. tairvinā notsahe vastumiha daityanibarhaṇa ,
gantumicchāmi tatrāhaṁ yatra me bhrātaro gatāḥ.
35. taiḥ vinā na utsahe vastum iha daityanibarhaṇa
gantum icchāmi tatra aham yatra me bhrātaraḥ gatāḥ
35. O daityanibarhaṇa,
taiḥ vinā iha vastum na utsahe.
aham tatra gantum icchāmi yatra me bhrātaraḥ gatāḥ.
35. Without them, I am unable to stay here, O destroyer of demons. I desire to go where my brothers have gone.
यत्र सा बृहती श्यामा बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्विता ।
द्रौपदी योषितां श्रेष्ठा यत्र चैव प्रिया मम ॥३६॥
36. yatra sā bṛhatī śyāmā buddhisattvaguṇānvitā ,
draupadī yoṣitāṁ śreṣṭhā yatra caiva priyā mama.
36. yatra sā bṛhatī śyāmā buddhisattvaguṇānvitā
draupadī yoṣitām śreṣṭhā yatra ca eva priyā mama
36. yatra sā bṛhatī śyāmā buddhisattvaguṇānvitā yoṣitām śreṣṭhā draupadī,
yatra ca eva mama priyā.
36. Where that tall, dark-skinned, and excellent Draupadi, endowed with intelligence and the quality of goodness (sattva), the foremost among women, is; and where my beloved is.
