सोऽभिगर्जन्धनुष्पाणिर्ज्यां विकर्षन्पुनः पुनः ।
तयोर्महात्मनोस्तूर्णं रथान्तरमवापतत् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
so'bhigarjandhanuṣpāṇirjyāṁ vikarṣanpunaḥ punaḥ ,
tayormahātmanostūrṇaṁ rathāntaramavāpatat.

1. Saṃjaya said: He (Vṛṣasena), roaring and holding his bow, repeatedly drawing the bowstring, swiftly reached the space between the chariots of those two great souls (Karna and Abhimanyu).
सोऽविध्यद्दशभिर्बाणैरभिमन्युं दुरासदम् ।
सच्छत्रध्वजयन्तारं साश्वमाशु स्मयन्निव ॥२॥
2. so'vidhyaddaśabhirbāṇairabhimanyuṁ durāsadam ,
sacchatradhvajayantāraṁ sāśvamāśu smayanniva.
2. saḥ avidyat daśabhiḥ bāṇaiḥ abhimanyuṃ durāsadam
sa-chatra-dhvaja-yantāraṃ sa-aśvam āśu smayan iva
2. saḥ smayan iva āśu daśabhiḥ bāṇaiḥ durāsadam abhimanyuṃ sa-chatra-dhvaja-yantāraṃ sa-aśvam avidyat.
2. He, as if smiling, quickly pierced the formidable Abhimanyu with ten arrows, striking his umbrella, banner, charioteer, and horses.
पितृपैतामहं कर्म कुर्वाणमतिमानुषम् ।
दृष्ट्वार्दितं शरैः कार्ष्णिं त्वदीया हृषिताभवन् ॥३॥
3. pitṛpaitāmahaṁ karma kurvāṇamatimānuṣam ,
dṛṣṭvārditaṁ śaraiḥ kārṣṇiṁ tvadīyā hṛṣitābhavan.
3. pitṛpaitāmahaṃ karma kurvāṇam atimānuṣam dṛṣṭvā
ārditam śaraiḥ kārṣṇiṃ tvadīyāḥ hṛṣitāḥ abhavan
3. tvadīyāḥ pitṛpaitāmahaṃ karma atimānuṣam kurvāṇam śaraiḥ ārditam kārṣṇiṃ dṛṣṭvā hṛṣitāḥ abhavan.
3. Seeing Kṛṣṇa's son (Abhimanyu), who was performing his ancestral duties (karma) with superhuman valor, afflicted by arrows, your people became delighted.
तस्याभिमन्युरायम्य स्मयन्नेकेन पत्रिणा ।
शिरः प्रच्यावयामास स रथात्प्रापतद्भुवि ॥४॥
4. tasyābhimanyurāyamya smayannekena patriṇā ,
śiraḥ pracyāvayāmāsa sa rathātprāpatadbhuvi.
4. tasya abhimanyuḥ āyamya smayan ekena patriṇā
śiraḥ pracyāvayāmāsa saḥ rathāt prāpatat bhuvi
4. smayan abhimanyuḥ tasya śiraḥ āyamya ekena patriṇā pracyāvayāmāsa.
saḥ rathāt bhuvi prāpatat.
4. Smiling, Abhimanyu drew his bow and, with a single arrow, severed his opponent's head. He (the opponent) then fell from his chariot to the ground.
कर्णिकारमिवोद्धूतं वातेन मथितं नगात् ।
भ्रातरं निहतं दृष्ट्वा राजन्कर्णो व्यथां ययौ ॥५॥
5. karṇikāramivoddhūtaṁ vātena mathitaṁ nagāt ,
bhrātaraṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā rājankarṇo vyathāṁ yayau.
5. karṇikāram iva uddhūtam vātena mathitam nagāt
bhrātaram nihatam dṛṣṭvā rājan karṇaḥ vyathām yayau
5. rājan karṇaḥ vātena nagāt mathitam uddhūtam karṇikāram iva nihatam bhrātaram dṛṣṭvā vyathām yayau.
5. O King, seeing his brother killed, fallen like a karṇikāra tree uprooted and cast down from a mountain by the wind, Karṇa became deeply distressed.
विमुखीकृत्य कर्णं तु सौभद्रः कङ्कपत्रिभिः ।
अन्यानपि महेष्वासांस्तूर्णमेवाभिदुद्रुवे ॥६॥
6. vimukhīkṛtya karṇaṁ tu saubhadraḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ ,
anyānapi maheṣvāsāṁstūrṇamevābhidudruve.
6. vimukhīkṛtya karṇaṃ tu saubhadraḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ
anyān api maheṣvāsān tūrṇam eva abhidudruve

6. Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadra, having forced Karṇa to turn away with arrows feathered with vulture plumes, then quickly rushed towards and attacked other great archers as well.
ततस्तद्विततं जालं हस्त्यश्वरथपत्तिमत् ।
झषः क्रुद्ध इवाभिन्ददभिमन्युर्महायशाः ॥७॥
7. tatastadvitataṁ jālaṁ hastyaśvarathapattimat ,
jhaṣaḥ kruddha ivābhindadabhimanyurmahāyaśāḥ.
7. tataḥ tat vitatam jālam hasty-aśva-ratha-pattimat
jhaṣaḥ kruddhaḥ iva abhindat abhimanyuḥ mahāyaśāḥ
7. tataḥ mahāyaśāḥ abhimanyuḥ kruddhaḥ jhaṣaḥ iva tat
vitatam hasty-aśva-ratha-pattimat jālam abhindat
7. Thereupon, the highly renowned Abhimanyu, like an enraged fish, pierced through that vast, widespread formation of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry.
कर्णस्तु बहुभिर्बाणैरर्द्यमानोऽभिमन्युना ।
अपायाज्जवनैरश्वैस्ततोऽनीकमभिद्यत ॥८॥
8. karṇastu bahubhirbāṇairardyamāno'bhimanyunā ,
apāyājjavanairaśvaistato'nīkamabhidyata.
8. karṇaḥ tu bahubhiḥ bāṇaiḥ ardyamānaḥ abhimanyunā
apāyāt javanaiḥ aśvaiḥ tataḥ anīkam abhidyata
8. tu abhimanyunā bahubhiḥ bāṇaiḥ ardyamānaḥ karṇaḥ
javanaiḥ aśvaiḥ apāyāt tataḥ anīkam abhidyata
8. But Karṇa, being greatly distressed by Abhimanyu's many arrows, retreated with his swift horses. Thereupon, the army was pierced through and scattered.
शलभैरिव चाकाशे धाराभिरिव चावृते ।
अभिमन्योः शरै राजन्न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥९॥
9. śalabhairiva cākāśe dhārābhiriva cāvṛte ,
abhimanyoḥ śarai rājanna prājñāyata kiṁcana.
9. śalabhaiḥ iva ca ākāśe dhārābhiḥ iva ca āvṛte
abhimanyoḥ śaraiḥ rājan na prājñāyata kiṃcana
9. rājan abhimanyoḥ śaraiḥ ākāśe śalabhaiḥ iva ca
dhārābhiḥ iva ca āvṛte kiṃcana na prājñāyata
9. O King, due to Abhimanyu's arrows, nothing whatsoever could be discerned, as the sky was covered as if by swarms of locusts and as if by torrential showers.
तावकानां तु योधानां वध्यतां निशितैः शरैः ।
अन्यत्र सैन्धवाद्राजन्न स्म कश्चिदतिष्ठत ॥१०॥
10. tāvakānāṁ tu yodhānāṁ vadhyatāṁ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
anyatra saindhavādrājanna sma kaścidatiṣṭhata.
10. tāvakānām tu yodhānām vadhyatām niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
anyatra saindhavāt rājan na sma kaścit atiṣṭhata
10. rājan tāvakānām yodhānām tu niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
vadhyatām saindhavāt anyatra kaścit na sma atiṣṭhata
10. O King, your warriors were indeed being killed by sharp arrows. No one could stand firm, except for Saindhava.
सौभद्रस्तु ततः शङ्खं प्रध्माप्य पुरुषर्षभः ।
शीघ्रमभ्यपतत्सेनां भारतीं भरतर्षभ ॥११॥
11. saubhadrastu tataḥ śaṅkhaṁ pradhmāpya puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
śīghramabhyapatatsenāṁ bhāratīṁ bharatarṣabha.
11. saubhadraḥ tu tataḥ śaṅkham pradhmāpya puruṣarṣabhaḥ
śīghram abhyapatat senām bhāratīm bharatarṣabha
11. bharatarṣabha tataḥ saubhadraḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ
pradhmāpya śaṅkham śīghram bhāratīm senām abhyapatat
11. O best of Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), then Subhadrā's son (saubhadra), that best among men (puruṣarṣabha), having blown his conch, swiftly attacked the Bhārata army.
स कक्षेऽग्निरिवोत्सृष्टो निर्दहंस्तरसा रिपून् ।
मध्ये भारतसैन्यानामार्जुनिः पर्यवर्तत ॥१२॥
12. sa kakṣe'gnirivotsṛṣṭo nirdahaṁstarasā ripūn ,
madhye bhāratasainyānāmārjuniḥ paryavartata.
12. saḥ kakṣe agniḥ iva utsṛṣṭaḥ nirdahan tarasā
ripūn madhye bhāratasainyānām ārjuniḥ paryavartata
12. saḥ ārjuniḥ kakṣe utsṛṣṭaḥ agniḥ iva tarasā ripūn
nirdahan bhāratasainyānām madhye paryavartata
12. Like a fire let loose in dry forest (kakṣa), he, Arjuna's son (ārjuni), consumed the enemies with his might, raging amidst the Bhārata armies.
रथनागाश्वमनुजानर्दयन्निशितैः शरैः ।
स प्रविश्याकरोद्भूमिं कबन्धगणसंकुलाम् ॥१३॥
13. rathanāgāśvamanujānardayanniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
sa praviśyākarodbhūmiṁ kabandhagaṇasaṁkulām.
13. rathanāgāśvamanujān ārdayan niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
saḥ praviśya akarot bhūmim kabandhagaṇasaṅkulām
13. saḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ rathanāgāśvamanujān ārdayan
praviśya bhūmim kabandhagaṇasaṅkulām akarot
13. Tormenting chariots, elephants, horses, and men with his sharp arrows, he (Abhimanyu), having penetrated (the army), made the ground full of multitudes of headless trunks (kabandha).
सौभद्रचापप्रभवैर्निकृत्ताः परमेषुभिः ।
स्वानेवाभिमुखान्घ्नन्तः प्राद्रवञ्जीवितार्थिनः ॥१४॥
14. saubhadracāpaprabhavairnikṛttāḥ parameṣubhiḥ ,
svānevābhimukhānghnantaḥ prādravañjīvitārthinaḥ.
14. saubhadracāpaprabhavaiḥ nikṛttāḥ parameṣubhiḥ svān
eva abhimukhān ghnantaḥ prādravan jīvitārthinaḥ
14. jīvitārthinaḥ saubhadracāpaprabhavaiḥ parameṣubhiḥ
nikṛttāḥ svān abhimukhān ghnantaḥ eva prādravan
14. Seeking to save their lives, those warriors, severed by excellent arrows shot from Abhimanyu's (Saubhadra's) bow, fled, even striking their own men who stood facing them.
ते घोरा रौद्रकर्माणो विपाठाः पृथवः शिताः ।
निघ्नन्तो रथनागाश्वाञ्जग्मुराशु वसुंधराम् ॥१५॥
15. te ghorā raudrakarmāṇo vipāṭhāḥ pṛthavaḥ śitāḥ ,
nighnanto rathanāgāśvāñjagmurāśu vasuṁdharām.
15. te ghorāḥ raudrakarmāṇaḥ vipāṭhāḥ pṛthavaḥ śitāḥ
nighnantaḥ rathanāgāśvān jagmuḥ āśu vasundharām
15. te ghorāḥ raudrakarmāṇaḥ vipāṭhāḥ pṛthavaḥ śitāḥ
rathanāgāśvān nighnantaḥ āśu vasundharām jagmuḥ
15. Those dreadful arrows, performing fierce deeds, broad-headed, wide, and sharpened, swiftly struck down chariots, elephants, and horses, and then penetrated the earth.
सायुधाः साङ्गुलित्राणाः सखड्गाः साङ्गदा रणे ।
दृश्यन्ते बाहवश्छिन्ना हेमाभरणभूषिताः ॥१६॥
16. sāyudhāḥ sāṅgulitrāṇāḥ sakhaḍgāḥ sāṅgadā raṇe ,
dṛśyante bāhavaśchinnā hemābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ.
16. sāyudhāḥ sāṅgulitrāṇāḥ sakhaḍgāḥ sāṅgadāḥ raṇe
dṛśyante bāhavaḥ chinnāḥ hemābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ
16. raṇe sāyudhāḥ sāṅgulitrāṇāḥ sakhaḍgāḥ sāṅgadāḥ
hemābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ chinnāḥ bāhavaḥ dṛśyante
16. On the battlefield, severed arms are seen, still equipped with weapons, finger-protectors, and swords, and adorned with golden armlets.
शराश्चापानि खड्गाश्च शरीराणि शिरांसि च ।
सकुण्डलानि स्रग्वीणि भूमावासन्सहस्रशः ॥१७॥
17. śarāścāpāni khaḍgāśca śarīrāṇi śirāṁsi ca ,
sakuṇḍalāni sragvīṇi bhūmāvāsansahasraśaḥ.
17. śarāḥ ca cāpāni khaḍgāḥ ca śarīrāṇi śirāṃsi ca
sakuṇḍalāni sragvīṇi bhūmau āsan sahasraśaḥ
17. śarāḥ ca cāpāni ca khaḍgāḥ ca śarīrāṇi ca sakuṇḍalāni
sragvīṇi śirāṃsi ca bhūmau sahasraśaḥ āsan
17. Arrows, bows, swords, bodies, and heads adorned with earrings and garlands lay on the ground by the thousands.
अपस्करैरधिष्ठानैरीषादण्डकबन्धुरैः ।
अक्षैर्विमथितैश्चक्रैर्भग्नैश्च बहुधा रथैः ।
शक्तिचापायुधैश्चापि पतितैश्च महाध्वजैः ॥१८॥
18. apaskarairadhiṣṭhānairīṣādaṇḍakabandhuraiḥ ,
akṣairvimathitaiścakrairbhagnaiśca bahudhā rathaiḥ ,
śakticāpāyudhaiścāpi patitaiśca mahādhvajaiḥ.
18. apaskaraiḥ adhiṣṭhānaiḥ īṣādaṇḍakabandhuraiḥ
akṣaiḥ vimathitaiḥ cakraiḥ
bhagnaiḥ ca bahudhā rathaiḥ śakticāpāyudhaiḥ
ca api patitaiḥ ca mahādhvajaiḥ
18. apaskaraiḥ,
adhiṣṭhānaiḥ,
īṣādaṇḍakabandhuraiḥ,
vimathitaiḥ akṣaiḥ,
bhagnaiḥ cakraiḥ ca,
bahudhā rathaiḥ ca,
śakticāpāyudhaiḥ ca api,
patitaiḥ mahādhvajaiḥ ca (vyāptā bhūmiḥ).
18. The ground was strewn with debris, seats, and bent yoke-poles and shafts. It was covered with crushed axles, shattered wheels, and chariots broken in many ways, as well as fallen spears, bows, other weapons, and great standards.
निहतैः क्षत्रियैरश्वैर्वारणैश्च विशां पते ।
अगम्यकल्पा पृथिवी क्षणेनासीत्सुदारुणा ॥१९॥
19. nihataiḥ kṣatriyairaśvairvāraṇaiśca viśāṁ pate ,
agamyakalpā pṛthivī kṣaṇenāsītsudāruṇā.
19. nihataiḥ kṣatriyaiḥ aśvaiḥ vāraṇaiḥ ca viśām
pate agamyakalpā pṛthivī kṣaṇena āsīt sudāruṇā
19. viśām pate,
nihataiḥ kṣatriyaiḥ,
aśvaiḥ ca,
vāraṇaiḥ ca,
pṛthivī kṣaṇena agamyakalpā sudāruṇā āsīt.
19. O lord of the people (viśām pate), with slain kshatriyas, horses, and elephants, the earth became in an instant extremely terrible and almost impassable.
वध्यतां राजपुत्राणां क्रन्दतामितरेतरम् ।
प्रादुरासीन्महाशब्दो भीरूणां भयवर्धनः ।
स शब्दो भरतश्रेष्ठ दिशः सर्वा व्यनादयत् ॥२०॥
20. vadhyatāṁ rājaputrāṇāṁ krandatāmitaretaram ,
prādurāsīnmahāśabdo bhīrūṇāṁ bhayavardhanaḥ ,
sa śabdo bharataśreṣṭha diśaḥ sarvā vyanādayat.
20. vadhyatām rājaputrāṇām krandatām
itaretaram prādurasīt mahāśabdaḥ
bhīrūṇām bhayavardhanaḥ saḥ śabdaḥ
bharataśreṣṭha diśaḥ sarvāḥ vyanādayat
20. rājaputrāṇām vadhyatām itaretaram krandatām (madhye) bhīrūṇām bhayavardhanaḥ mahāśabdaḥ prādurasīt.
bharataśreṣṭha,
saḥ śabdaḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ vyanādayat.
20. A great, fear-increasing sound arose from the princes who were being slain and crying out to one another. O best of Bharatas (bharataśreṣṭha), that sound made all directions resound.
सौभद्रश्चाद्रवत्सेनां निघ्नन्नश्वरथद्विपान् ।
व्यचरत्स दिशः सर्वाः प्रदिशश्चाहितान्रुजन् ॥२१॥
21. saubhadraścādravatsenāṁ nighnannaśvarathadvipān ,
vyacaratsa diśaḥ sarvāḥ pradiśaścāhitānrujan.
21. saubhadraḥ ca adravat senām nighnan aśvarathadvipān
vyacarat saḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ pradiśaḥ ca ahitān rujan
21. saubhadraḥ ca senām adravat,
aśvarathadvipān nighnan (san).
saḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ ca pradiśaḥ ca ahitān rujan (san) vyacarat.
21. And Saubhadra (Abhimanyu) rushed into the army, striking down horses, chariots, and elephants. He moved about in all directions and intermediate directions, crushing the enemies.
तं तदा नानुपश्याम सैन्येन रजसावृतम् ।
आददानं गजाश्वानां नृणां चायूंषि भारत ॥२२॥
22. taṁ tadā nānupaśyāma sainyena rajasāvṛtam ,
ādadānaṁ gajāśvānāṁ nṛṇāṁ cāyūṁṣi bhārata.
22. tam tadā na anupaśyāma sainyena rajasā āvṛtam
ādadānam gajāśvānām nṛṇām ca āyūṃṣi bhārata
22. bhārata tadā sainyena rajasā āvṛtam tam
gajāśvānām nṛṇām ca āyūṃṣi ādadānam na anupaśyāma
22. O Bhārata, at that time, we could not see him, covered as he was by the dust raised by the army, as he took away the lifespans of elephants, horses, and men.
क्षणेन भूयोऽपश्याम सूर्यं मध्यंदिने यथा ।
अभिमन्युं महाराज प्रतपन्तं द्विषद्गणान् ॥२३॥
23. kṣaṇena bhūyo'paśyāma sūryaṁ madhyaṁdine yathā ,
abhimanyuṁ mahārāja pratapantaṁ dviṣadgaṇān.
23. kṣaṇena bhūyaḥ apaśyāma sūryam madhyaṃdine yathā
abhimanyum mahārāja pratapantam dviṣadgaṇān
23. mahārāja kṣaṇena bhūyaḥ madhyaṃdine yathā sūryam
dviṣadgaṇān pratapantam abhimanyum apaśyāma
23. O great king, in a moment we again saw Abhimanyu, just like the blazing sun at midday, tormenting the hosts of enemies.
स वासवसमः संख्ये वासवस्यात्मजात्मजः ।
अभिमन्युर्महाराज सैन्यमध्ये व्यरोचत ॥२४॥
24. sa vāsavasamaḥ saṁkhye vāsavasyātmajātmajaḥ ,
abhimanyurmahārāja sainyamadhye vyarocata.
24. saḥ vāsavasamaḥ saṃkhye vāsavasya ātmaja ātmajaḥ
abhimanyuḥ mahārāja sainyamadhye vi arocata
24. mahārāja vāsavasya ātmaja ātmajaḥ saḥ abhimanyuḥ
saṃkhye vāsavasamaḥ sainyamadhye vi arocata
24. O great king, that Abhimanyu, grandson of Vāsava (Indra) and equal to Vāsava himself in battle, shone splendidly amidst the army.
