एवं व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु भूयिष्ठमनुवर्तिषु ।
ब्रह्मलोकपराः सर्वे समपद्यन्त भारत ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: 'O Dhritarashtra (Bhārata), with the armies thus arrayed and most of the warriors adhering to their duty, all of them became intent on reaching the world of Brahma (brahmaloka).'
न ह्यनीकमनीकेन समसज्जत संकुले ।
न रथा रथिभिः सार्धं न पदाताः पदातिभिः ॥२॥
2. na hyanīkamanīkena samasajjata saṁkule ,
na rathā rathibhiḥ sārdhaṁ na padātāḥ padātibhiḥ.

2. Indeed, in that dense conflict, army did not clash with army. Nor did chariots engage with charioteers, nor foot-soldiers with foot-soldiers.
अश्वा नाश्वैरयुध्यन्त न गजा गजयोधिभिः ।
महान्व्यतिकरो रौद्रः सेनयोः समपद्यत ॥३॥
3. aśvā nāśvairayudhyanta na gajā gajayodhibhiḥ ,
mahānvyatikaro raudraḥ senayoḥ samapadyata.

na (ayudhyanta) mahān raudraḥ vyatikaraḥ samapadyata
3. It was not that horses fought exclusively with horses, nor did elephants fight solely with elephant-warriors. Instead, a great and dreadful intermingling (of all types of combatants) took place between the two armies.
नरनागरथेष्वेवं व्यवकीर्णेषु सर्वशः ।
क्षये तस्मिन्महारौद्रे निर्विशेषमजायत ॥४॥
4. naranāgaratheṣvevaṁ vyavakīrṇeṣu sarvaśaḥ ,
kṣaye tasminmahāraudre nirviśeṣamajāyata.

4. Thus, with men, elephants, and chariots scattered everywhere, in that terribly dreadful destruction, all distinctions ceased to exist.
ततः शल्यः कृपश्चैव चित्रसेनश्च भारत ।
दुःशासनो विकर्णश्च रथानास्थाय सत्वराः ।
पाण्डवानां रणे शूरा ध्वजिनीं समकम्पयन् ॥५॥
5. tataḥ śalyaḥ kṛpaścaiva citrasenaśca bhārata ,
duḥśāsano vikarṇaśca rathānāsthāya satvarāḥ ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ raṇe śūrā dhvajinīṁ samakampayan.
5. tataḥ śalyaḥ kṛpaḥ ca eva citrasenaḥ
ca bhārata duḥśāsanaḥ vikarṇaḥ

raṇe pāṇḍavānām dhvajinīm samakampayan
5. Then, O Bhārata, Śalya, Kṛpa, Citrasena, Duḥśāsana, and Vikarṇa - these heroes, swiftly mounting their chariots - caused the Pāṇḍavas' army to tremble in battle.
सा वध्यमाना समरे पाण्डुसेना महात्मभिः ।
त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छद्वै मज्जमानेव नौर्जले ॥६॥
6. sā vadhyamānā samare pāṇḍusenā mahātmabhiḥ ,
trātāraṁ nādhyagacchadvai majjamāneva naurjale.
6. sā vadhyamānā samare pāṇḍusenā mahātmabhiḥ trātāram
na adhyagacchat vai majjamānā iva nauḥ jale

6. That Pāṇḍava army, being struck down in battle by the great warriors (mahātmas), could indeed find no protector, just like a sinking ship in water.
यथा हि शैशिरः कालो गवां मर्माणि कृन्तति ।
तथा पाण्डुसुतानां वै भीष्मो मर्माण्यकृन्तत ॥७॥
7. yathā hi śaiśiraḥ kālo gavāṁ marmāṇi kṛntati ,
tathā pāṇḍusutānāṁ vai bhīṣmo marmāṇyakṛntata.

7. Indeed, just as the winter season severely affects the vital organs of cattle, so too did Bhīṣma wound the vulnerable points of the Pāṇḍavas.
अतीव तव सैन्यस्य पार्थेन च महात्मना ।
नगमेघप्रतीकाशाः पातिता बहुधा गजाः ॥८॥
8. atīva tava sainyasya pārthena ca mahātmanā ,
nagameghapratīkāśāḥ pātitā bahudhā gajāḥ.

8. And by the great-souled (mahātman) Pārtha (Arjuna), the elephants of your army, resembling mountains and clouds, were extensively felled in many ways.
मृद्यमानाश्च दृश्यन्ते पार्थेन नरयूथपाः ।
इषुभिस्ताड्यमानाश्च नाराचैश्च सहस्रशः ॥९॥
9. mṛdyamānāśca dṛśyante pārthena narayūthapāḥ ,
iṣubhistāḍyamānāśca nārācaiśca sahasraśaḥ.

9. And the commanders of men are seen being crushed and struck by thousands of Arjuna's arrows and iron arrows.
पेतुरार्तस्वरं कृत्वा तत्र तत्र महागजाः ।
आबद्धाभरणैः कायैर्निहतानां महात्मनाम् ॥१०॥
10. peturārtasvaraṁ kṛtvā tatra tatra mahāgajāḥ ,
ābaddhābharaṇaiḥ kāyairnihatānāṁ mahātmanām.
10. petuḥ ārtasvaraṃ kṛtvā tatra tatra mahāgajāḥ
ābaddhābharaṇaiḥ kāyaiḥ nihatānāṃ mahātmanām
10. mahāgajāḥ ārtasvaraṃ kṛtvā tatra tatra petuḥ
ābaddhābharaṇaiḥ kāyaiḥ nihatānāṃ mahātmanām
10. Here and there, the great elephants fell, making cries of distress, along with the bodies of the slain noble warriors (mahātman) whose ornaments were still bound.
छन्नमायोधनं रेजे शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः ।
तस्मिन्नतिमहाभीमे राजन्वीरवरक्षये ।
भीष्मे च युधि विक्रान्ते पाण्डवे च धनंजये ॥११॥
11. channamāyodhanaṁ reje śirobhiśca sakuṇḍalaiḥ ,
tasminnatimahābhīme rājanvīravarakṣaye ,
bhīṣme ca yudhi vikrānte pāṇḍave ca dhanaṁjaye.
11. channam āyodhanaṃ reje śirobhiḥ ca
sakuṇḍalaiḥ tasmin ati-mahābhīme
rājan vīravara-kṣaye bhīṣme ca
yudhi vikrānte pāṇḍave ca dhanaṃjaye
11. rājan,
channam āyodhanaṃ sakuṇḍalaiḥ śirobhiḥ ca reje.
tasmin ati-mahābhīme vīravara-kṣaye,
bhīṣme ca yudhi vikrānte,
pāṇḍave ca dhanaṃjaye (vikrānte).
11. The battlefield, covered [with bodies and gore], shone [gruesomely] with heads still adorned with earrings. O King, in that exceedingly terrifying destruction of the best heroes, even as Bhishma fought valiantly in battle and Dhananjaya (Arjuna) also demonstrated valor.
ते पराक्रान्तमालोक्य राजन्युधि पितामहम् ।
न न्यवर्तन्त कौरव्या ब्रह्मलोकपुरस्कृताः ॥१२॥
12. te parākrāntamālokya rājanyudhi pitāmaham ,
na nyavartanta kauravyā brahmalokapuraskṛtāḥ.
12. te parākrāntam ālokya rājan yudhi pitāmahaṃ
na nyavartanta kauravyāḥ brahmalokapuraskṛtāḥ
12. rājan,
te kauravyāḥ,
yudhi pitāmahaṃ parākrāntam ālokya,
brahmaloka-puraskṛtāḥ (santaḥ) na nyavartanta.
12. O King, seeing the Grandfather (Bhishma) valorous in battle, those Kauravas, who had set their sights on Brahmaloka (brahmaloka) as their ultimate reward, did not retreat.
इच्छन्तो निधनं युद्धे स्वर्गं कृत्वा परायणम् ।
पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तन्त तस्मिन्वीरवरक्षये ॥१३॥
13. icchanto nidhanaṁ yuddhe svargaṁ kṛtvā parāyaṇam ,
pāṇḍavānabhyavartanta tasminvīravarakṣaye.
13. icchantaḥ nidhanam yuddhe svargam kṛtvā parāyaṇam
pāṇḍavān abhyavartanta tasmin vīravara-kṣaye
13. (te) yuddhe nidhanam icchantaḥ,
svargam parāyaṇam kṛtvā,
tasmin vīravara-kṣaye pāṇḍavān abhyavartanta.
13. Desiring death in battle and making heaven (svarga) their ultimate refuge, they advanced against the Pandavas amidst that destruction of the best heroes.
पाण्डवापि महाराज स्मरन्तो विविधान्बहून् ।
क्लेशान्कृतान्सपुत्रेण त्वया पूर्वं नराधिप ॥१४॥
14. pāṇḍavāpi mahārāja smaranto vividhānbahūn ,
kleśānkṛtānsaputreṇa tvayā pūrvaṁ narādhipa.
14. pāṇḍavāḥ api mahārāja smarantaḥ vividhān bahūn
kleśān kṛtān sa-putreṇa tvayā pūrvam narādhipa
14. mahārāja,
narādhipa,
pāṇḍavāḥ api,
pūrvam tvayā sa-putreṇa kṛtān vividhān bahūn kleśān smarantaḥ.

14. O Great King, the Pandavas also, remembering the many various afflictions inflicted upon them previously by you and your son, O Lord of men...
भयं त्यक्त्वा रणे शूरा ब्रह्मलोकपुरस्कृताः ।
तावकांस्तव पुत्रांश्च योधयन्ति स्म हृष्टवत् ॥१५॥
15. bhayaṁ tyaktvā raṇe śūrā brahmalokapuraskṛtāḥ ,
tāvakāṁstava putrāṁśca yodhayanti sma hṛṣṭavat.
15. bhayam tyaktvā raṇe śūrāḥ brahmalokapuraskṛtāḥ
tāvakān tava putrān ca yodhayanti sma hṛṣṭavat
15. raṇe bhayam tyaktvā brahmalokapuraskṛtāḥ śūrāḥ

15. The heroes, having abandoned fear in battle and destined for the world of Brahma, were joyfully fighting your people and your sons.
सेनापतिस्तु समरे प्राह सेनां महारथः ।
अभिद्रवत गाङ्गेयं सोमकाः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥१६॥
16. senāpatistu samare prāha senāṁ mahārathaḥ ,
abhidravata gāṅgeyaṁ somakāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha.
16. senāpatiḥ tu samare prāha senām mahārathaḥ
abhidravata gāṅgeyam somakāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha
16. tu mahārathaḥ senāpatiḥ samare senām prāha:
"somakāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha gāṅgeyam abhidravata!"
16. But the great charioteer, the commander, in battle, told the army: "Somakas, with the Srinjayas, attack the son of Ganga (Gaṅgeya)!"
सेनापतिवचः श्रुत्वा सोमकाः सह सृञ्जयैः ।
अभ्यद्रवन्त गाङ्गेयं शस्त्रवृष्ट्या समन्ततः ॥१७॥
17. senāpativacaḥ śrutvā somakāḥ saha sṛñjayaiḥ ,
abhyadravanta gāṅgeyaṁ śastravṛṣṭyā samantataḥ.
17. senāpativacanam śrutvā somakāḥ saha sṛñjayaiḥ
abhyadravanta gāṅgeyam śastravṛṣṭyā samantataḥ
17. senāpativacanam śrutvā,
somakāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha samantataḥ śastravṛṣṭyā gāṅgeyam abhyadravanta
17. Having heard the commander's words, the Somakas, along with the Srinjayas, rushed from all sides towards the son of Ganga (Gaṅgeya) with a shower of weapons.
वध्यमानस्ततो राजन्पिता शांतनवस्तव ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नो योधयामास सृञ्जयान् ॥१८॥
18. vadhyamānastato rājanpitā śāṁtanavastava ,
amarṣavaśamāpanno yodhayāmāsa sṛñjayān.
18. vadhyamānaḥ tataḥ rājan pitā śāntanavaḥ tava
amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ yodhayāmāsa sṛñjayān
18. rājan,
tataḥ tava pitā śāntanavaḥ vadhyamānaḥ amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ sṛñjayān yodhayāmāsa
18. Then, O King, your father, the son of Shantanu (Shāntanava), being assailed, became overcome by wrath and fiercely fought the Srinjayas.
तस्य कीर्तिमतस्तात पुरा रामेण धीमता ।
संप्रदत्तास्त्रशिक्षा वै परानीकविनाशिनी ॥१९॥
19. tasya kīrtimatastāta purā rāmeṇa dhīmatā ,
saṁpradattāstraśikṣā vai parānīkavināśinī.
19. tasya kīrtimataḥ tāta purā rāmeṇa dhīmatā
saṃpradattā astraśikṣā vai parānīkavināśinī

19. O son, in ancient times, the intelligent Rāma had indeed imparted to that renowned one (Bhīṣma) the knowledge of weaponry, which was capable of destroying entire enemy forces.
स तां शिक्षामधिष्ठाय कृत्वा परबलक्षयम् ।
अहन्यहनि पार्थानां वृद्धः कुरुपितामहः ।
भीष्मो दश सहस्राणि जघान परवीरहा ॥२०॥
20. sa tāṁ śikṣāmadhiṣṭhāya kṛtvā parabalakṣayam ,
ahanyahani pārthānāṁ vṛddhaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ,
bhīṣmo daśa sahasrāṇi jaghāna paravīrahā.
20. sa tām śikṣām adhiṣṭhāya kṛtvā
parabalakṣayam ahani ahani pārthānām
vṛddhaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ bhīṣmaḥ

20. Having taken up that instruction, and having brought about the destruction of enemy forces, Bhīṣma, the venerable grandsire of the Kurus, a slayer of enemy heroes, killed ten thousand warriors of the Pārthas day after day.
तस्मिंस्तु दिवसे प्राप्ते दशमे भरतर्षभ ।
भीष्मेणैकेन मत्स्येषु पाञ्चालेषु च संयुगे ।
गजाश्वममितं हत्वा हताः सप्त महारथाः ॥२१॥
21. tasmiṁstu divase prāpte daśame bharatarṣabha ,
bhīṣmeṇaikena matsyeṣu pāñcāleṣu ca saṁyuge ,
gajāśvamamitaṁ hatvā hatāḥ sapta mahārathāḥ.
21. tasmin tu divase prāpte daśame
bharatarṣabha bhīṣmeṇa ekena matsyaiṣu
pāñcāleṣu ca saṃyuge gajāśvam
amitam hatvā hatāḥ sapta mahārathāḥ
21. bharatarṣabha tasmin daśame divase prāpte tu,
saṃyuge matsyaiṣu ca pāñcāleṣu,
bhīṣmeṇa ekena amitam gajāśvam hatvā,
sapta mahārathāḥ hatāḥ
21. O best of Bharatas, on that tenth day, in the battle among the Matsyas and Pāñcālas, seven great charioteers were killed by Bhīṣma alone, after he had slain countless elephants and horses.
हत्वा पञ्च सहस्राणि रथिनां प्रपितामहः ।
नराणां च महायुद्धे सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥२२॥
22. hatvā pañca sahasrāṇi rathināṁ prapitāmahaḥ ,
narāṇāṁ ca mahāyuddhe sahasrāṇi caturdaśa.
22. hatvā pañca sahasrāṇi rathinām prapitāmahaḥ
narāṇām ca mahāyuddhe sahasrāṇi caturdaśa

22. And in the great battle, the great-grandsire (Bhīṣma) killed five thousand charioteers and fourteen thousand men.
तथा दन्तिसहस्रं च हयानामयुतं पुनः ।
शिक्षाबलेन निहतं पित्रा तव विशां पते ॥२३॥
23. tathā dantisahasraṁ ca hayānāmayutaṁ punaḥ ,
śikṣābalena nihataṁ pitrā tava viśāṁ pate.
23. tathā dantisahasram ca hayānām ayutam punaḥ
śikṣābalena nihatam pitrā tava viśām pate
23. viśām pate tava pitrā śikṣābalena tathā
dantisahasram ca punaḥ hayānām ayutam nihatam
23. Similarly, a thousand elephants and again ten thousand horses were slain by your father's martial skill, O ruler of men.
ततः सर्वमहीपानां क्षोभयित्वा वरूथिनीम् ।
विराटस्य प्रियो भ्राता शतानीको निपातितः ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ sarvamahīpānāṁ kṣobhayitvā varūthinīm ,
virāṭasya priyo bhrātā śatānīko nipātitaḥ.
24. tataḥ sarvamahīpānām kṣobhayitvā varūthinīm
virāṭasya priyaḥ bhrātā śatānīkaḥ nipātitaḥ
24. tataḥ sarvamahīpānām varūthinīm kṣobhayitvā

24. Then, after scattering the army of all kings, Virāṭa's dear brother, Śatānīka, was struck down.
शतानीकं च समरे हत्वा भीष्मः प्रतापवान् ।
सहस्राणि महाराज राज्ञां भल्लैर्न्यपातयत् ॥२५॥
25. śatānīkaṁ ca samare hatvā bhīṣmaḥ pratāpavān ,
sahasrāṇi mahārāja rājñāṁ bhallairnyapātayat.
25. śatānīkam ca samare hatvā bhīṣmaḥ pratāpavān
sahasrāṇi mahārāja rājñām bhallaiḥ nyapātayat
25. mahārāja,

25. O great king, having killed Śatānīka in battle, the powerful Bhīṣma struck down thousands of kings with his arrows.
ये च केचन पार्थानामभियाता धनंजयम् ।
राजानो भीष्ममासाद्य गतास्ते यमसादनम् ॥२६॥
26. ye ca kecana pārthānāmabhiyātā dhanaṁjayam ,
rājāno bhīṣmamāsādya gatāste yamasādanam.
26. ye ca kecana pārthānām abhiyātāḥ dhanañjayam
rājānaḥ bhīṣmam āsādya gatāḥ te yamasādanam
26. ca ye kecana rājānaḥ pārthānām dhanañjayam abhiyātāḥ,
te bhīṣmam āsādya yamasādanam gatāḥ
26. And whichever kings among the Pāṇḍavas had advanced against Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), they, having encountered Bhīṣma, went to the abode of Yama.
एवं दश दिशो भीष्मः शरजालैः समन्ततः ।
अतीत्य सेनां पार्थानामवतस्थे चमूमुखे ॥२७॥
27. evaṁ daśa diśo bhīṣmaḥ śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ ,
atītya senāṁ pārthānāmavatasthe camūmukhe.
27. evam daśa diśaḥ bhīṣmaḥ śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ
atītya senām pārthānām avatasthe camūmukhe
27. evam bhīṣmaḥ śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ daśa diśaḥ

27. In this manner, Bhishma, with a barrage of arrows, completely covered all ten directions, thereby overwhelming the army of the Pārthas and establishing himself at the forefront of the host.
स कृत्वा सुमहत्कर्म तस्मिन्वै दशमेऽहनि ।
सेनयोरन्तरे तिष्ठन्प्रगृहीतशरासनः ॥२८॥
28. sa kṛtvā sumahatkarma tasminvai daśame'hani ,
senayorantare tiṣṭhanpragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ.

senayoḥ antare tiṣṭhan pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ
28. saḥ tasmin vai daśame ahani sumahat karma kṛtvā,

28. Having accomplished a truly great feat on that very tenth day, he stood between the two armies, his bow taken up (pragṛhītaśarāsana).
न चैनं पार्थिवा राजञ्शेकुः केचिन्निरीक्षितुम् ।
मध्यं प्राप्तं यथा ग्रीष्मे तपन्तं भास्करं दिवि ॥२९॥
29. na cainaṁ pārthivā rājañśekuḥ kecinnirīkṣitum ,
madhyaṁ prāptaṁ yathā grīṣme tapantaṁ bhāskaraṁ divi.

29. Nor, O King, could any of the princes (pārthiva) gaze upon him, just as one cannot look at the sun (bhāskara) blazing in the sky at its zenith in summer.
यथा दैत्यचमूं शक्रस्तापयामास संयुगे ।
तथा भीष्मः पाण्डवेयांस्तापयामास भारत ॥३०॥
30. yathā daityacamūṁ śakrastāpayāmāsa saṁyuge ,
tathā bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍaveyāṁstāpayāmāsa bhārata.

30. Just as Śakra tormented the army of the Daityas in battle, similarly, Bhishma tormented the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata.
तथा च तं पराक्रान्तमालोक्य मधुसूदनः ।
उवाच देवकीपुत्रः प्रीयमाणो धनंजयम् ॥३१॥
31. tathā ca taṁ parākrāntamālokya madhusūdanaḥ ,
uvāca devakīputraḥ prīyamāṇo dhanaṁjayam.

31. And thus, beholding him so valorous, Devaki's son Madhusudana, delighted, spoke to Dhananjaya.
एष शांतनवो भीष्मः सेनयोरन्तरे स्थितः ।
नानिहत्य बलादेनं विजयस्ते भविष्यति ॥३२॥
32. eṣa śāṁtanavo bhīṣmaḥ senayorantare sthitaḥ ,
nānihatya balādenaṁ vijayaste bhaviṣyati.

32. This Bhishma, son of Shantanu, stands between the two armies. Your victory will not come without forcefully striking him down.
यत्तः संस्तम्भयस्वैनं यत्रैषा भिद्यते चमूः ।
न हि भीष्मशरानन्यः सोढुमुत्सहते विभो ॥३३॥
33. yattaḥ saṁstambhayasvainaṁ yatraiṣā bhidyate camūḥ ,
na hi bhīṣmaśarānanyaḥ soḍhumutsahate vibho.

camūḥ na hi bhīṣmaśarān anyaḥ soḍhum utsahate vibho

33. Be vigilant and restrain him [Bhishma] where this army is being broken, O mighty one, for truly no one else is able to endure Bhishma's arrows.
ततस्तस्मिन्क्षणे राजंश्चोदितो वानरध्वजः ।
सध्वजं सरथं साश्वं भीष्ममन्तर्दधे शरैः ॥३४॥
34. tatastasminkṣaṇe rājaṁścodito vānaradhvajaḥ ,
sadhvajaṁ sarathaṁ sāśvaṁ bhīṣmamantardadhe śaraiḥ.

34. Thereupon, O king, at that moment, the one with the monkey banner (Arjuna), thus impelled, concealed Bhishma - along with his banner, chariot, and horses - with showers of arrows.
स चापि कुरुमुख्यानामृषभः पाण्डवेरितान् ।
शरव्रातैः शरव्रातान्बहुधा विदुधाव तान् ॥३५॥
35. sa cāpi kurumukhyānāmṛṣabhaḥ pāṇḍaveritān ,
śaravrātaiḥ śaravrātānbahudhā vidudhāva tān.

35. And he, the foremost among the chief Kurus, also scattered in many ways the barrages of arrows sent by the Pandavas with his own barrages of arrows.
तेन पाञ्चालराजश्च धृष्टकेतुश्च वीर्यवान् ।
पाण्डवो भीमसेनश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ॥३६॥
36. tena pāñcālarājaśca dhṛṣṭaketuśca vīryavān ,
pāṇḍavo bhīmasenaśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ.

36. Among them were the king of Pañcāla, and the valiant Dhṛṣṭaketu, and the Pāṇḍava Bhīmasena, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, son of Pṛṣata.
यमौ च चेकितानश्च केकयाः पञ्च चैव ह ।
सात्यकिश्च महाराज सौभद्रोऽथ घटोत्कचः ॥३७॥
37. yamau ca cekitānaśca kekayāḥ pañca caiva ha ,
sātyakiśca mahārāja saubhadro'tha ghaṭotkacaḥ.

37. And the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), and Cekitāna, and indeed the five Kekayas; and Sātyaki, O great king, then Saubhadra (Abhimanyu), and Ghaṭotkaca.
द्रौपदेयाः शिखण्डी च कुन्तिभोजश्च वीर्यवान् ।
सुशर्मा च विराटश्च पाण्डवेया महाबलाः ॥३८॥
38. draupadeyāḥ śikhaṇḍī ca kuntibhojaśca vīryavān ,
suśarmā ca virāṭaśca pāṇḍaveyā mahābalāḥ.

38. The sons of Draupadī, and Śikhaṇḍī, and the valiant Kuntibhoja; and Suśarmā, and Virāṭa, as well as other greatly powerful Pāṇḍava warriors.
एते चान्ये च बहवः पीडिता भीष्मसायकैः ।
समुद्धृताः फल्गुनेन निमग्नाः शोकसागरे ॥३९॥
39. ete cānye ca bahavaḥ pīḍitā bhīṣmasāyakaiḥ ,
samuddhṛtāḥ phalgunena nimagnāḥ śokasāgare.

39. These and many others, tormented by Bhishma's arrows and submerged in an ocean of sorrow, were rescued by Arjuna (Phalguna).
ततः शिखण्डी वेगेन प्रगृह्य परमायुधम् ।
भीष्ममेवाभिदुद्राव रक्ष्यमाणः किरीटिना ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ śikhaṇḍī vegena pragṛhya paramāyudham ,
bhīṣmamevābhidudrāva rakṣyamāṇaḥ kirīṭinā.

40. Then Shikhandi, swiftly grasping his supreme weapon, rushed towards Bhishma, being protected by Kiriti (Arjuna).

भीष्ममेवाभिदुद्राव बीभत्सुरपराजितः ॥४१॥
41. tato'syānucarānhatvā sarvānraṇavibhāgavit ,
bhīṣmamevābhidudrāva bībhatsuraparājitaḥ.

41. Then Bibhatsu (Arjuna), the unconquered one and expert in battle strategies, having slain all of Bhishma's followers, rushed directly towards Bhishma.
सात्यकिश्चेकितानश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ।
विराटो द्रुपदश्चैव माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ।
दुद्रुवुर्भीष्ममेवाजौ रक्षिता दृढधन्वना ॥४२॥

42. Satyaki, Chekitana, Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Prishata, Virata, Drupada, and the two Pandava sons of Madri (Nakula and Sahadeva) - all of them rushed towards Bhishma himself in battle, protected by the firm-bowman (Arjuna).
अभिमन्युश्च समरे द्रौपद्याः पञ्च चात्मजाः ।
दुद्रुवुः समरे भीष्मं समुद्यतमहायुधाः ॥४३॥
43. abhimanyuśca samare draupadyāḥ pañca cātmajāḥ ,
dudruvuḥ samare bhīṣmaṁ samudyatamahāyudhāḥ.

43. Abhimanyu and Draupadi's five sons, with their mighty weapons raised, rushed towards Bhishma in battle.
ते सर्वे दृढधन्वानः संयुगेष्वपलायिनः ।
बहुधा भीष्ममानर्छन्मार्गणैः कृतमार्गणाः ॥४४॥
44. te sarve dṛḍhadhanvānaḥ saṁyugeṣvapalāyinaḥ ,
bahudhā bhīṣmamānarchanmārgaṇaiḥ kṛtamārgaṇāḥ.

44. All of them, possessing strong bows and never retreating from battles, repeatedly struck Bhishma in many ways with their arrows, which had found their targets.
विधूय तान्बाणगणान्ये मुक्ताः पार्थिवोत्तमैः ।
पाण्डवानामदीनात्मा व्यगाहत वरूथिनीम् ।
कृत्वा शरविघातं च क्रीडन्निव पितामहः ॥४५॥
45. vidhūya tānbāṇagaṇānye muktāḥ pārthivottamaiḥ ,
pāṇḍavānāmadīnātmā vyagāhata varūthinīm ,
kṛtvā śaravighātaṁ ca krīḍanniva pitāmahaḥ.

45. Shaking off the multitudes of arrows released by the foremost kings, the great-souled grandfather (Bhishma), as if playing, neutralized those arrows and plunged into the Pandava army.
नाभिसंधत्त पाञ्चाल्यं स्मयमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ।
स्त्रीत्वं तस्यानुसंस्मृत्य भीष्मो बाणाञ्शिखण्डिनः ।
जघान द्रुपदानीके रथान्सप्त महारथः ॥४६॥
46. nābhisaṁdhatta pāñcālyaṁ smayamāno muhurmuhuḥ ,
strītvaṁ tasyānusaṁsmṛtya bhīṣmo bāṇāñśikhaṇḍinaḥ ,
jaghāna drupadānīke rathānsapta mahārathaḥ.

Drupada-anīke sapta rathān jaghāna
46. The great warrior (Bhishma), repeatedly smiling and remembering Shikhandi's female nature (strītva), did not aim his arrows at Panchalya (Shikhandi). Instead, he destroyed seven chariots in Drupada's army.
ततः किलकिलाशब्दः क्षणेन समपद्यत ।
मत्स्यपाञ्चालचेदीनां तमेकमभिधावताम् ॥४७॥
47. tataḥ kilakilāśabdaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata ,
matsyapāñcālacedīnāṁ tamekamabhidhāvatām.

47. Then, in a moment, a tumultuous roar (kilakilāśabda) arose from the Matsyas, Pañcālas, and Cedis as they rushed towards that one individual.

तमेकं छादयामासुर्मेघा इव दिवाकरम् ।
भीष्मं भागीरथीपुत्रं प्रतपन्तं रणे रिपून् ॥४८॥
48. te varāśvarathavrātairvāraṇaiḥ sapadātibhiḥ ,
tamekaṁ chādayāmāsurmeghā iva divākaram ,
bhīṣmaṁ bhāgīrathīputraṁ pratapantaṁ raṇe ripūn.

48. They, with their battalions of excellent horses and chariots, with their elephants, and with their foot soldiers, enveloped that one individual, Bhishma, the son of Bhāgīrathī, who was scorching his enemies in battle, just as clouds envelop the sun.
ततस्तस्य च तेषां च युद्धे देवासुरोपमे ।
किरीटी भीष्ममानर्छत्पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् ॥४९॥
49. tatastasya ca teṣāṁ ca yuddhe devāsuropame ,
kirīṭī bhīṣmamānarchatpuraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam.

49. Then, in that battle, which resembled the conflict between gods and asuras, Kirīṭī (Arjuna), placing Śikhaṇḍin in front, attacked Bhishma, while both Bhishma and his adversaries were engaged.
