Sanjaya said: 'O Dhritarashtra (Bhārata), with the armies thus arrayed and most of the warriors adhering to their duty, all of them became intent on reaching the world of Brahma (brahmaloka).'

Indeed, in that dense conflict, army did not clash with army. Nor did chariots engage with charioteers, nor foot-soldiers with foot-soldiers.

3.
It was not that horses fought exclusively with horses, nor did elephants fight solely with elephant-warriors. Instead, a great and dreadful intermingling (of all types of combatants) took place between the two armies.

Thus, with men, elephants, and chariots scattered everywhere, in that terribly dreadful destruction, all distinctions ceased to exist.

Then, O Bhārata, Śalya, Kṛpa, Citrasena, Duḥśāsana, and Vikarṇa - these heroes, swiftly mounting their chariots - caused the Pāṇḍavas' army to tremble in battle.

That Pāṇḍava army, being struck down in battle by the great warriors (mahātmas), could indeed find no protector, just like a sinking ship in water.

Indeed, just as the winter season severely affects the vital organs of cattle, so too did Bhīṣma wound the vulnerable points of the Pāṇḍavas.

And the commanders of men are seen being crushed and struck by thousands of Arjuna's arrows and iron arrows.

11.
The battlefield, covered [with bodies and gore], shone [gruesomely] with heads still adorned with earrings. O King, in that exceedingly terrifying destruction of the best heroes, even as Bhishma fought valiantly in battle and Dhananjaya (Arjuna) also demonstrated valor.
