युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
इमे जना नरश्रेष्ठ प्रशंसन्ति सदा भुवि ।
धर्मस्य शीलमेवादौ ततो मे संशयो महान् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
ime janā naraśreṣṭha praśaṁsanti sadā bhuvi ,
dharmasya śīlamevādau tato me saṁśayo mahān.

1. Yudhishthira said: "O best among men, these people on earth always praise primarily the conduct (in accordance with) natural law (dharma). From this, a great doubt has arisen in me."
यदि तच्छक्यमस्माभिर्ज्ञातुं धर्मभृतां वर ।
श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्सर्वं यथैतदुपलभ्यते ॥२॥
2. yadi tacchakyamasmābhirjñātuṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ vara ,
śrotumicchāmi tatsarvaṁ yathaitadupalabhyate.
2. yadi tat śakyam asmābhiḥ jñātum dharmabhṛtām vara
śrotum icchāmi tat sarvam yathā etat upalabhyate

2. O best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), if that can be known by us, I desire to hear all about how it is understood.
कथं नु प्राप्यते शीलं श्रोतुमिच्छामि भारत ।
किंलक्षणं च तत्प्रोक्तं ब्रूहि मे वदतां वर ॥३॥
3. kathaṁ nu prāpyate śīlaṁ śrotumicchāmi bhārata ,
kiṁlakṣaṇaṁ ca tatproktaṁ brūhi me vadatāṁ vara.
3. katham nu prāpyate śīlam śrotum icchāmi bhārata
kimlakṣaṇam ca tat proktam brūhi me vadatām vara
3. bhārata vadatām vara katham nu śīlam
prāpyate ca tat kimlakṣaṇam proktam me brūhi
3. O Bhārata, I wish to hear how good character is obtained. And what are its defining characteristics? Tell me that, O best among speakers.
भीष्म उवाच ।
पुरा दुर्योधनेनेह धृतराष्ट्राय मानद ।
आख्यातं तप्यमानेन श्रियं दृष्ट्वा तथागताम् ॥४॥
4. bhīṣma uvāca ,
purā duryodhaneneha dhṛtarāṣṭrāya mānada ,
ākhyātaṁ tapyamānena śriyaṁ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatām.
4. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca purā duryodhanena iha dhṛtarāṣṭrāya
mānada ākhyātam tapyamānena śriyam dṛṣṭvā tathāgatām
4. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca mānada purā tapyamānena duryodhanena
iha dhṛtarāṣṭrāya tathāgatām śriyam dṛṣṭvā ākhyātam
4. Bhishma said: "O giver of honor, formerly, Duryodhana, tormented, narrated this to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having seen the prosperity (śrī) that had thus come [to the Pāṇḍavas]."
इन्द्रप्रस्थे महाराज तव सभ्रातृकस्य ह ।
सभायां चावहसनं तत्सर्वं शृणु भारत ॥५॥
5. indraprasthe mahārāja tava sabhrātṛkasya ha ,
sabhāyāṁ cāvahasanaṁ tatsarvaṁ śṛṇu bhārata.

sabhāyām ca avahasanam tat sarvam śṛṇu bhārata
5. mahārāja bhārata indraprasthe sabhāyām tava

5. (Duryodhana to Dhṛtarāṣṭra): "O great king, O Bhārata, listen to all that ridicule that occurred in the assembly at Indraprastha, concerning your sons along with their brothers."
भवतस्तां सभां दृष्ट्वा समृद्धिं चाप्यनुत्तमाम् ।
दुर्योधनस्तदासीनः सर्वं पित्रे न्यवेदयत् ॥६॥
6. bhavatastāṁ sabhāṁ dṛṣṭvā samṛddhiṁ cāpyanuttamām ,
duryodhanastadāsīnaḥ sarvaṁ pitre nyavedayat.
6. bhavataḥ tām sabhām dṛṣṭvā samṛddhim ca api anuttamām
duryodhanaḥ tadā āsīnaḥ sarvam pitre nyavedayat
6. duryodhanaḥ bhavataḥ tām sabhām ca anuttamām
samṛddhim dṛṣṭvā tadā āsīnaḥ sarvam pitre nyavedayat
6. Having seen that assembly hall of yours (the Pāṇḍavas) and their unsurpassed prosperity, Duryodhana, while seated, then reported everything to his father.
श्रुत्वा च धृतराष्ट्रोऽपि दुर्योधनवचस्तदा ।
अब्रवीत्कर्णसहितं दुर्योधनमिदं वचः ॥७॥
7. śrutvā ca dhṛtarāṣṭro'pi duryodhanavacastadā ,
abravītkarṇasahitaṁ duryodhanamidaṁ vacaḥ.
7. śrutvā ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ api duryodhanavacaḥ tadā
abravīt karṇasahitām duryodhanam idam vacaḥ
7. ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ api tadā duryodhanavacaḥ śrutvā
karṇasahitām duryodhanam idam vacaḥ abravīt
7. And having heard Duryodhana's words then, Dhritarashtra also spoke these words to Duryodhana, who was accompanied by Karna.
किमर्थं तप्यसे पुत्र श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ।
श्रुत्वा त्वामनुनेष्यामि यदि सम्यग्भविष्यसि ॥८॥
8. kimarthaṁ tapyase putra śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ ,
śrutvā tvāmanuneṣyāmi yadi samyagbhaviṣyasi.
8. kimartham tapyase putra śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ
śrutvā tvām anuneṣyāmi yadi samyak bhaviṣyasi
8. putra kimartham tapyase? tattvataḥ śrotum icchāmi.
yadi samyak bhaviṣyasi,
tvām śrutvā anuneṣyāmi.
8. "Why are you grieving, my son? I wish to hear the truth (tattvataḥ). Having heard (your words), I will appease you, if you are indeed in the right."
यथा त्वं महदैश्वर्यं प्राप्तः परपुरंजय ।
किंकरा भ्रातरः सर्वे मित्राः संबन्धिनस्तथा ॥९॥
9. yathā tvaṁ mahadaiśvaryaṁ prāptaḥ parapuraṁjaya ,
kiṁkarā bhrātaraḥ sarve mitrāḥ saṁbandhinastathā.
9. yathā tvam mahat aiśvaryam prāptaḥ parapuranjaya
kiṅkarāḥ bhrātaraḥ sarve mitrāḥ saṃbandhinaḥ tathā
9. parapuranjaya,
yathā tvam mahat aiśvaryam prāptaḥ (tathā ca) sarve bhrātaraḥ,
mitrāḥ,
saṃbandhinaḥ kiṅkarāḥ (santi)?
9. "How is it, O conqueror of enemy cities (parapuraṃjaya), that you have attained great sovereignty, with all your brothers, friends, and relatives acting as your servants (kiṅkarāḥ)?"
आच्छादयसि प्रावारानश्नासि पिशितोदनम् ।
आजानेया वहन्ति त्वां कस्माच्छोचसि पुत्रक ॥१०॥
10. ācchādayasi prāvārānaśnāsi piśitodanam ,
ājāneyā vahanti tvāṁ kasmācchocasi putraka.
10. ācchādayasi prāvārān aśnāsi piśitodanam
ājāneyāḥ vahanti tvām kasmāt śocasi putraka
10. putraka prāvārān ācchādayasi piśitodanam
aśnāsi ājāneyāḥ tvām vahanti kasmāt śocasi
10. You cover yourself with excellent garments, you eat meat and rice, and thoroughbred horses carry you. Why, then, do you lament, my dear son?
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
दश तानि सहस्राणि स्नातकानां महात्मनाम् ।
भुञ्जते रुक्मपात्रीषु युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥११॥
11. duryodhana uvāca ,
daśa tāni sahasrāṇi snātakānāṁ mahātmanām ,
bhuñjate rukmapātrīṣu yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane.
11. duryodhanaḥ uvāca daśa tāni sahasrāṇi snātakānām
mahātmanām bhuñjate rukmapātrīṣu yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane
11. duryodhanaḥ uvāca daśa tāni mahātmanām snātakānām
sahasrāṇi yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane rukmapātrīṣu bhuñjate
11. Duryodhana said: Those ten thousand great-souled (mahātman) graduates (snātaka) are feasting in golden plates in Yudhiṣṭhira's abode.
दृष्ट्वा च तां सभां दिव्यां दिव्यपुष्पफलान्विताम् ।
अश्वांस्तित्तिरकल्माषान्रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥१२॥
12. dṛṣṭvā ca tāṁ sabhāṁ divyāṁ divyapuṣpaphalānvitām ,
aśvāṁstittirakalmāṣānratnāni vividhāni ca.
12. dṛṣṭvā ca tām sabhām divyām divyapuṣpaphalānvitām
aśvān tittirakalmāṣān ratnāni vividhāni ca
12. ca tām divyām divyapuṣpaphalānvitām sabhām
tittirakalmāṣān aśvān vividhāni ratnāni ca dṛṣṭvā
12. And having seen that divine assembly hall, adorned with divine flowers and fruits, as well as horses spotted like partridges, and various jewels...
दृष्ट्वा तां पाण्डवेयानामृद्धिमिन्द्रोपमां शुभाम् ।
अमित्राणां सुमहतीमनुशोचामि मानद ॥१३॥
13. dṛṣṭvā tāṁ pāṇḍaveyānāmṛddhimindropamāṁ śubhām ,
amitrāṇāṁ sumahatīmanuśocāmi mānada.
13. dṛṣṭvā tām pāṇḍaveyānām ṛddhim indropamām
śubhām amitrāṇām sumahatīm anuśocāmi mānada
13. mānada pāṇḍaveyānām tām śubhām indropamām
amitrāṇām sumahatīm ṛddhim dṛṣṭvā anuśocāmi
13. Having seen that auspicious and Indra-like prosperity of the Pāṇḍavas - a prosperity that is exceedingly vast for their adversaries - I lament, O bestower of honor.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यदीच्छसि श्रियं तात यादृशीं तां युधिष्ठिरे ।
विशिष्टां वा नरव्याघ्र शीलवान्भव पुत्रक ॥१४॥
14. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yadīcchasi śriyaṁ tāta yādṛśīṁ tāṁ yudhiṣṭhire ,
viśiṣṭāṁ vā naravyāghra śīlavānbhava putraka.
14. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | yadi icchasi śriyam tāta yādṛśīm tām
yudhiṣṭhire | viśiṣṭām vā naravyāghra śīlavān bhava putraka
14. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca tāta putraka naravyāghra yadi yudhiṣṭhire
tām yādṛśīm śriyam vā viśiṣṭām icchasi śīlavān bhava
14. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O dear son (putraka), if you desire prosperity such as Yudhiṣṭhira possesses, or even a superior one, O tiger among men, then become a man of good character."
शीलेन हि त्रयो लोकाः शक्या जेतुं न संशयः ।
न हि किंचिदसाध्यं वै लोके शीलवतां भवेत् ॥१५॥
15. śīlena hi trayo lokāḥ śakyā jetuṁ na saṁśayaḥ ,
na hi kiṁcidasādhyaṁ vai loke śīlavatāṁ bhavet.
15. śīlena hi trayaḥ lokāḥ śakyāḥ jetum na saṃśayaḥ
| na hi kiñcid asādhyam vai loke śīlavatām bhavet
15. hi śīlena trayaḥ lokāḥ jetum śakyāḥ na saṃśayaḥ
hi vai loke śīlavatām kiñcid asādhyam na bhavet
15. Indeed, the three worlds can be conquered by good character; there is no doubt about it. Truly, nothing impossible would exist in the world for those who possess good character.
एकरात्रेण मान्धाता त्र्यहेण जनमेजयः ।
सप्तरात्रेण नाभागः पृथिवीं प्रतिपेदिवान् ॥१६॥
16. ekarātreṇa māndhātā tryaheṇa janamejayaḥ ,
saptarātreṇa nābhāgaḥ pṛthivīṁ pratipedivān.
16. ekarātreṇa māndhātā tryaheṇa janamejayaḥ |
saptarātreṇa nābhāgaḥ pṛthivīm pratipedivān
16. māndhātā ekarātreṇa janamejayaḥ tryaheṇa
nābhāgaḥ saptarātreṇa pṛthivīm pratipedivān
16. Māndhātā obtained the entire earth in a single night, Janamejaya in three days, and Nābhāga in seven nights.
एते हि पार्थिवाः सर्वे शीलवन्तो दमान्विताः ।
अतस्तेषां गुणक्रीता वसुधा स्वयमागमत् ॥१७॥
17. ete hi pārthivāḥ sarve śīlavanto damānvitāḥ ,
atasteṣāṁ guṇakrītā vasudhā svayamāgamat.
17. ete hi pārthivāḥ sarve śīlavantaḥ damānvitaḥ
| ataḥ teṣām guṇakrītā vasudhā svayam āgamat
17. hi ete sarve pārthivāḥ śīlavantaḥ damānvitaḥ
[āsan] ataḥ teṣām guṇakrītā vasudhā svayam āgamat
17. Indeed, all these rulers were men of good character and endowed with self-control. Therefore, the earth, acquired through their virtues, came to them on its own accord.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
नारदेन पुरा प्रोक्तं शीलमाश्रित्य भारत ॥१८॥
18. atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
nāradena purā proktaṁ śīlamāśritya bhārata.
18. atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam purātanam
Nāradena purā proktam śīlam āśritya Bhārata
18. Bhārata atra api purātanam imam itihāsam
Nāradena purā śīlam āśritya proktam udāharanti
18. O Bhārata, in this context, they also relate this ancient narrative, which was formerly recounted by Narada, focusing on good conduct (śīlam).
प्रह्रादेन हृतं राज्यं महेन्द्रस्य महात्मनः ।
शीलमाश्रित्य दैत्येन त्रैलोक्यं च वशीकृतम् ॥१९॥
19. prahrādena hṛtaṁ rājyaṁ mahendrasya mahātmanaḥ ,
śīlamāśritya daityena trailokyaṁ ca vaśīkṛtam.
19. Prahrādena hṛtam rājyam Mahendrasya mahātmanaḥ
śīlam āśritya daityena trailokyam ca vaśīkṛtam
19. daityena Prahrādena śīlam āśritya mahātmanaḥ
Mahendrasya rājyam hṛtam ca trailokyam vaśīkṛtam
19. Prahlada, the Daitya, seized the kingdom of the great-souled Mahendra (Indra) and brought the three worlds under his control, all by virtue of his good conduct (śīlam).
ततो बृहस्पतिं शक्रः प्राञ्जलिः समुपस्थितः ।
उवाच च महाप्राज्ञः श्रेय इच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥२०॥
20. tato bṛhaspatiṁ śakraḥ prāñjaliḥ samupasthitaḥ ,
uvāca ca mahāprājñaḥ śreya icchāmi veditum.
20. tataḥ Bṛhaspatim Śakraḥ prāñjaliḥ samupasthitaḥ
uvāca ca mahāprājñaḥ śreyaḥ icchāmi veditum
20. tataḥ prāñjaliḥ samupasthitaḥ Śakraḥ Bṛhaspatim uvāca ca.
mahāprājñaḥ [Indra said] 'śreyaḥ veditum icchāmi.
'
20. Then Indra (Śakra), with folded hands, approached Brihaspati. And the greatly wise Indra said, 'I wish to know what is most beneficial (śreyas).'
ततो बृहस्पतिस्तस्मै ज्ञानं नैःश्रेयसं परम् ।
कथयामास भगवान्देवेन्द्राय कुरूद्वह ॥२१॥
21. tato bṛhaspatistasmai jñānaṁ naiḥśreyasaṁ param ,
kathayāmāsa bhagavāndevendrāya kurūdvaha.
21. tataḥ Bṛhaspatiḥ tasmai jñānam naiḥśreyasam
param kathayāmāsa Bhagavān Devendrāya Kurūdvaha
21. Kurūdvaha tataḥ Bhagavān Bṛhaspatiḥ tasmai
Devendrāya param naiḥśreyasam jñānam kathayāmāsa
21. O foremost of Kurus, then the revered Brihaspati recounted to Devendra (Indra) that supreme knowledge (jñāna) which leads to final liberation (naiḥśreyas).
एतावच्छ्रेय इत्येव बृहस्पतिरभाषत ।
इन्द्रस्तु भूयः पप्रच्छ क्व विशेषो भवेदिति ॥२२॥
22. etāvacchreya ityeva bṛhaspatirabhāṣata ,
indrastu bhūyaḥ papraccha kva viśeṣo bhavediti.
22. etāvat śreyaḥ iti eva bṛhaspatiḥ abhāṣata indraḥ
tu bhūyaḥ papraccha kva viśeṣaḥ bhavet iti
22. bṛhaspatiḥ abhāṣata etāvat śreyaḥ iti eva tu
indraḥ bhūyaḥ papraccha kva viśeṣaḥ bhavet iti
22. Brihaspati declared, 'This much indeed constitutes the supreme good (śreyas).' But Indra asked further, 'Where could there be a special distinction?'
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
विशेषोऽस्ति महांस्तात भार्गवस्य महात्मनः ।
तत्रागमय भद्रं ते भूय एव पुरंदर ॥२३॥
23. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
viśeṣo'sti mahāṁstāta bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
tatrāgamaya bhadraṁ te bhūya eva puraṁdara.
23. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca viśeṣaḥ asti mahān tāta bhārgavasya
mahātmanaḥ tatra āgamaya bhadram te bhūyaḥ eva purandara
23. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca he tāta he purandara mahān viśeṣaḥ mahātmanaḥ
bhārgavasya asti tatra bhūyaḥ eva āgamaya te bhadram
23. Brihaspati replied, 'O dear one, there is a great distinction concerning the great-souled (mahātman) son of Bhṛgu. Go there; may good fortune be yours, O Purandara, once again.'
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
आत्मनस्तु ततः श्रेयो भार्गवात्सुमहायशाः ।
ज्ञानमागमयत्प्रीत्या पुनः स परमद्युतिः ॥२४॥
24. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ātmanastu tataḥ śreyo bhārgavātsumahāyaśāḥ ,
jñānamāgamayatprītyā punaḥ sa paramadyutiḥ.
24. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ātmanaḥ tu tataḥ śreyaḥ bhārgavāt
sumahāyaśāḥ jñānam āgamayat prītyā punaḥ saḥ paramadyutiḥ
24. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca tataḥ saḥ sumahāyaśāḥ paramadyutiḥ
ātmanaḥ tu śreyaḥ jñānam bhārgavāt prītyā punaḥ āgamayat
24. Dhritarashtra said: 'Then, that supremely radiant and very glorious one (Indra) acquired knowledge (jñāna) for himself (ātman) with affection from Bhṛgu's son (Bhārgava) once again.'
तेनापि समनुज्ञातो भार्गवेण महात्मना ।
श्रेयोऽस्तीति पुनर्भूयः शुक्रमाह शतक्रतुः ॥२५॥
25. tenāpi samanujñāto bhārgaveṇa mahātmanā ,
śreyo'stīti punarbhūyaḥ śukramāha śatakratuḥ.
25. tena api samanuñjātaḥ bhārgaveṇa mahātmanā śreyaḥ
asti iti punar bhūyaḥ śukram āha śatakratuḥ
25. tena mahātmanā bhārgaveṇa api samanuñjātaḥ
śatakratuḥ punar bhūyaḥ śukram āha śreyaḥ asti iti
25. Even after being permitted by that great-souled (mahātman) Bhṛgu's son (Bhārgava), Shatakratu (Indra) again and again said to Shukra, 'There is (still a higher) good (śreyas)!'
भार्गवस्त्वाह धर्मज्ञः प्रह्रादस्य महात्मनः ।
ज्ञानमस्ति विशेषेण ततो हृष्टश्च सोऽभवत् ॥२६॥
26. bhārgavastvāha dharmajñaḥ prahrādasya mahātmanaḥ ,
jñānamasti viśeṣeṇa tato hṛṣṭaśca so'bhavat.
26. bhārgavaḥ tu āha dharmajñaḥ prahrādasya mahātmanaḥ
jñānam asti viśeṣeṇa tataḥ hṛṣṭaḥ ca saḥ abhavat
26. dharmajñaḥ bhārgavaḥ tu āha mahātmanaḥ prahrādasya
jñānam viśeṣeṇa asti tataḥ saḥ hṛṣṭaḥ ca abhavat
26. The knower of natural law (dharma), Bhargava, said that the great-souled Prahlāda possesses exceptional knowledge. Therefore, he (Bhargava) was pleased.
स ततो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा प्रह्रादं पाकशासनः ।
सृत्वा प्रोवाच मेधावी श्रेय इच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥२७॥
27. sa tato brāhmaṇo bhūtvā prahrādaṁ pākaśāsanaḥ ,
sṛtvā provāca medhāvī śreya icchāmi veditum.
27. saḥ tataḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhūtvā prahrādam pākaśāsanaḥ
sṛtvā provāca medhāvī śreyaḥ icchāmi veditum
27. tataḥ saḥ pākaśāsanaḥ medhāvī brāhmaṇaḥ bhūtvā prahrādam sṛtvā provāca "śreyaḥ veditum icchāmi.
"
27. Having become a Brahmin, the intelligent ruler of Pāka (Indra) then approached Prahlāda and said, "I wish to know what is beneficial."
प्रह्रादस्त्वब्रवीद्विप्रं क्षणो नास्ति द्विजर्षभ ।
त्रैलोक्यराज्ये सक्तस्य ततो नोपदिशामि ते ॥२८॥
28. prahrādastvabravīdvipraṁ kṣaṇo nāsti dvijarṣabha ,
trailokyarājye saktasya tato nopadiśāmi te.
28. prahrādaḥ tu abravīt vipram kṣaṇaḥ na asti dvijarṣabha
trailokyarājye saktasya tataḥ na upadiśāmi te
28. tu prahrādaḥ vipram abravīt "dvijarṣabha,
trailokyarājye saktasya kṣaṇaḥ na asti.
tataḥ te na upadiśāmi.
"
28. But Prahlāda said to the Brahmin, "O best of Brahmins, there is no leisure (kṣaṇa) for one attached to the sovereignty of the three worlds. Therefore, I will not instruct you."
ब्राह्मणस्त्वब्रवीद्वाक्यं कस्मिन्काले क्षणो भवेत् ।
ततोपदिष्टमिच्छामि यद्यत्कार्यान्तरं भवेत् ॥२९॥
29. brāhmaṇastvabravīdvākyaṁ kasminkāle kṣaṇo bhavet ,
tatopadiṣṭamicchāmi yadyatkāryāntaraṁ bhavet.
29. brāhmaṇaḥ tu abravīt vākyam kasmin kāle kṣaṇaḥ bhavet
tataḥ upadiṣṭam icchāmi yat yat kāryāntaram bhavet
29. tu brāhmaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt "kasmin kāle kṣaṇaḥ bhavet? tataḥ upadiṣṭam icchāmi,
yat yat kāryāntaram bhavet (api).
"
29. But the Brahmin said this statement: "At what time might there be leisure? I desire to be instructed then, whatever other task you may have."
ततः प्रीतोऽभवद्राजा प्रह्रादो ब्रह्मवादिने ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा शुभे काले ज्ञानतत्त्वं ददौ तदा ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ prīto'bhavadrājā prahrādo brahmavādine ,
tathetyuktvā śubhe kāle jñānatattvaṁ dadau tadā.
30. tataḥ prītaḥ abhavat rājā prahrādaḥ brahmavādine
tathā iti uktvā śubhe kāle jñānatattvam dadau tadā
30. tataḥ rājā prahrādaḥ brahmavādine prītaḥ abhavat

30. Then King Prahlāda, pleased with the one who discoursed on Brahman, agreed, and at an auspicious time, he imparted the essence of spiritual knowledge.
ब्राह्मणोऽपि यथान्यायं गुरुवृत्तिमनुत्तमाम् ।
चकार सर्वभावेन यद्वत्स मनसेच्छति ॥३१॥
31. brāhmaṇo'pi yathānyāyaṁ guruvṛttimanuttamām ,
cakāra sarvabhāvena yadvatsa manasecchati.
31. brāhmaṇaḥ api yathānyāyam guruvṛttim anuttamām
cakāra sarvabhāvena yat vatsa manasā icchati
31. vatsa brāhmaṇaḥ api yathānyāyam anuttamām
guruvṛttim sarvabhāvena cakāra yat manasā icchati
31. O son, the Brahmin, for his part, also performed his excellent and unsurpassed duty (vṛtti) towards his teacher (guru) in accordance with the rules, with all his heart, just as one would wish.
पृष्टश्च तेन बहुशः प्राप्तं कथमरिंदम ।
त्रैलोक्यराज्यं धर्मज्ञ कारणं तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥३२॥
32. pṛṣṭaśca tena bahuśaḥ prāptaṁ kathamariṁdama ,
trailokyarājyaṁ dharmajña kāraṇaṁ tadbravīhi me.
32. pṛṣṭaḥ ca tena bahuśaḥ prāptam katham ariṃdama
trailokyarājyam dharmajña kāraṇam tat bravīhi me
32. ca tena bahuśaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ ariṃdama dharmajña katham
trailokyarājyam prāptam tat kāraṇam me bravīhi
32. And he (the Brahmin) asked him (Prahlāda) repeatedly, "O subduer of enemies, O knower of natural law (dharma), how did you attain sovereignty over the three worlds? Please tell me the reason for that."
प्रह्राद उवाच ।
नासूयामि द्विजश्रेष्ठ राजास्मीति कदाचन ।
कव्यानि वदतां तात संयच्छामि वहामि च ॥३३॥
33. prahrāda uvāca ,
nāsūyāmi dvijaśreṣṭha rājāsmīti kadācana ,
kavyāni vadatāṁ tāta saṁyacchāmi vahāmi ca.
33. prahrādaḥ uvāca na asūyāmi dvijaśreṣṭha rājā asmi iti
kadācana kavyāni vadatām tāta saṃyacchāmi vahāmi ca
33. prahrādaḥ uvāca dvijaśreṣṭha tāta aham rājā asmi iti
kadācana na asūyāmi ca kavyāni vadatām saṃyacchāmi vahāmi
33. Prahlāda said: "O best of Brahmins, I never harbor envy, thinking 'I am a king.' O dear one, I bestow favor upon and uphold the works of those who speak (or compose)."
ते विस्रब्धाः प्रभाषन्ते संयच्छन्ति च मां सदा ।
ते मा कव्यपदे सक्तं शुश्रूषुमनसूयकम् ॥३४॥
34. te visrabdhāḥ prabhāṣante saṁyacchanti ca māṁ sadā ,
te mā kavyapade saktaṁ śuśrūṣumanasūyakam.
34. te visrabdhāḥ prabhāṣante saṃyacchanti ca mām
sadā te mām kavyapade saktam śuśrūṣum anasūyakam
34. te visrabdhāḥ prabhāṣante ca mām sadā saṃyacchanti te
mām kavyapade saktam śuśrūṣum anasūyakam (manyante)
34. They (the teachers) speak freely and always restrain me. They regard me as devoted to ancestral offerings (kavya), eager to serve, and free from malice.
धर्मात्मानं जितक्रोधं संयतं संयतेन्द्रियम् ।
समाचिन्वन्ति शास्तारः क्षौद्रं मध्विव मक्षिकाः ॥३५॥
35. dharmātmānaṁ jitakrodhaṁ saṁyataṁ saṁyatendriyam ,
samācinvanti śāstāraḥ kṣaudraṁ madhviva makṣikāḥ.
35. dharmātmānam jitakrodham saṃyatam saṃyatendriyam
samācinvanti śāstāraḥ kṣaudram madhu iva makṣikāḥ
35. śāstāraḥ makṣikāḥ iva kṣaudram madhu dharmātmānam
jitakrodham saṃyatam saṃyatendriyam (mām) samācinvanti
35. The teachers (śāstāraḥ) gather around (me), whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is virtuous, who has conquered anger, who is self-controlled, and whose senses are restrained, just as bees collect wild honey.
सोऽहं वागग्रपिष्टानां रसानामवलेहिता ।
स्वजात्यानधितिष्ठामि नक्षत्राणीव चन्द्रमाः ॥३६॥
36. so'haṁ vāgagrapiṣṭānāṁ rasānāmavalehitā ,
svajātyānadhitiṣṭhāmi nakṣatrāṇīva candramāḥ.
36. saḥ aham vāgagrapiṣṭānām rasānām avalehitā
svajātyān adhitiṣṭhāmi nakṣatrāṇi iva candramāḥ
36. saḥ aham vāgagrapiṣṭānām rasānām avalehitā asmi (ca)
candramāḥ iva nakṣatrāṇi svajātyān adhitiṣṭhāmi
36. I am that one, a taster (licker) of the finest-prepared essences of words. I preside over those of my own kind, just as the moon presides over the constellations.
एतत्पृथिव्याममृतमेतच्चक्षुरनुत्तमम् ।
यद्ब्राह्मणमुखे कव्यमेतच्छ्रुत्वा प्रवर्तते ॥३७॥
37. etatpṛthivyāmamṛtametaccakṣuranuttamam ,
yadbrāhmaṇamukhe kavyametacchrutvā pravartate.
37. etat pṛthivyām amṛtam etat cakṣuḥ anuttamam
yat brāhmaṇamukhe kavyam etat śrutvā pravartate
37. etat pṛthivyām amṛtam asti etat ca anuttamam cakṣuḥ
asti yat brāhmaṇamukhe kavyam etat śrutvā pravartate
37. This (is) nectar on earth, and this (is) the unsurpassed vision: that the ancestral offering (kavya), when heard (chanted) from the mouth of a Brahmin, becomes effective (or: proceeds).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
एतावच्छ्रेय इत्याह प्रह्रादो ब्रह्मवादिनम् ।
शुश्रूषितस्तेन तदा दैत्येन्द्रो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३८॥
38. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
etāvacchreya ityāha prahrādo brahmavādinam ,
śuśrūṣitastena tadā daityendro vākyamabravīt.
38. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca etāvat śreyaḥ iti āha prahrādaḥ
brahmavādinam śuśrūṣitaḥ tena tadā daityendraḥ vākyam abravīt
38. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca prahrādaḥ brahmavādinam etāvat śreyaḥ iti āha.
tena śuśrūṣitaḥ tadā daityendraḥ vākyam abravīt.
38. Dhritarashtra said: Prahlada told the expounder of Brahman (brahmavādin), "This much is the supreme good." Then, having been diligently served by that [Brahmin], the lord of the Daityas [Prahlada] spoke [these] words.
यथावद्गुरुवृत्त्या ते प्रीतोऽस्मि द्विजसत्तम ।
वरं वृणीष्व भद्रं ते प्रदातास्मि न संशयः ॥३९॥
39. yathāvadguruvṛttyā te prīto'smi dvijasattama ,
varaṁ vṛṇīṣva bhadraṁ te pradātāsmi na saṁśayaḥ.
39. yathāvat guruvṛttyā te prītaḥ asmi dvijasattama
varam vṛṇīṣva bhadram te pradātā asmi na saṃśayaḥ
39. dvijasattama,
te yathāvat guruvṛttyā asmi prītaḥ.
varam vṛṇīṣva,
te bhadram.
na saṃśayaḥ pradātā asmi.
39. O best among Brahmins (dvijasattama), I am pleased with your proper conduct (vṛtti) as a teacher (guru). Choose a boon; may good fortune be upon you. Without doubt, I am a giver (pradātā).
कृतमित्येव दैत्येन्द्रमुवाच स च वै द्विजः ।
प्रह्रादस्त्वब्रवीत्प्रीतो गृह्यतां वर इत्युत ॥४०॥
40. kṛtamityeva daityendramuvāca sa ca vai dvijaḥ ,
prahrādastvabravītprīto gṛhyatāṁ vara ityuta.
40. kṛtam iti eva daityendram uvāca saḥ ca vai dvijaḥ
prahrādaḥ tu abravīt prītaḥ gṛhyatām varaḥ iti uta
40. saḥ dvijaḥ ca vai daityendram "kṛtam" iti eva uvāca.
tu prītaḥ prahrādaḥ "varaḥ gṛhyatām" iti uta abravīt.
40. And that Brahmin (dvija) indeed said to the lord of the Daityas (daityendra), "It is done!" But Prahlada, being pleased, said again, "Let the boon be accepted!"
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
यदि राजन्प्रसन्नस्त्वं मम चेच्छसि चेद्धितम् ।
भवतः शीलमिच्छामि प्राप्तुमेष वरो मम ॥४१॥
41. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
yadi rājanprasannastvaṁ mama cecchasi ceddhitam ,
bhavataḥ śīlamicchāmi prāptumeṣa varo mama.
41. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca yadi rājan prasannaḥ tvam mama ca icchasi
cet hitam bhavataḥ śīlam icchāmi prāptum eṣaḥ varaḥ mama
41. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca rājan,
yadi tvam prasannaḥ,
ca cet mama hitam icchasi,
bhavataḥ śīlam prāptum icchāmi.
eṣaḥ mama varaḥ.
41. The Brahmin said: "O king, if you are pleased and if you desire my welfare, then I wish to attain your character (śīla). This is my boon."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ततः प्रीतश्च दैत्येन्द्रो भयं चास्याभवन्महत् ।
वरे प्रदिष्टे विप्रेण नाल्पतेजायमित्युत ॥४२॥
42. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
tataḥ prītaśca daityendro bhayaṁ cāsyābhavanmahat ,
vare pradiṣṭe vipreṇa nālpatejāyamityuta.
42. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca tataḥ prītaḥ
ca daityendraḥ bhayam ca asya
abhavat mahat vare pradiṣṭe
vipreṇa na alpatejā ayam iti uta

ca abhavat asya mahat bhayam ca
abhavat ayam alpatejā na iti uta
42. Dhritarashtra said: Then, the lord of demons (Prahlāda) was pleased, but a great fear also arose in him when the Brahmin bestowed the boon, (as he realized) 'This one is certainly not of little power.'
एवमस्त्विति तं प्राह प्रह्रादो विस्मितस्तदा ।
उपाकृत्य तु विप्राय वरं दुःखान्वितोऽभवत् ॥४३॥
43. evamastviti taṁ prāha prahrādo vismitastadā ,
upākṛtya tu viprāya varaṁ duḥkhānvito'bhavat.
43. evam astu iti tam prāha prahrādaḥ vismitaḥ tadā
upākṛtya tu viprāya varam duḥkhānvitaḥ abhavat
43. tadā vismitaḥ prahrādaḥ tam evam astu iti prāha
tu viprāya varam upākṛtya duḥkhānvitaḥ abhavat
43. Then, astonished, Prahlāda said to him, "So be it." But having granted the boon to the Brahmin, he became filled with sorrow.
दत्ते वरे गते विप्रे चिन्तासीन्महती ततः ।
प्रह्रादस्य महाराज निश्चयं न च जग्मिवान् ॥४४॥
44. datte vare gate vipre cintāsīnmahatī tataḥ ,
prahrādasya mahārāja niścayaṁ na ca jagmivān.

44. O great king, when the boon was granted and the Brahmin had departed, great anxiety then arose in Prahlāda, and he could not reach a firm resolution.
तस्य चिन्तयतस्तात छायाभूतं महाद्युते ।
तेजो विग्रहवत्तात शरीरमजहात्तदा ॥४५॥
45. tasya cintayatastāta chāyābhūtaṁ mahādyute ,
tejo vigrahavattāta śarīramajahāttadā.
45. tasya cintayataḥ tāta chāyābhūtam mahādyute
tejaḥ vigrahavat tāta śarīram ajahāt tadā
45. tāta mahādyute tadā cintayataḥ tasya
chāyābhūtam vigrahavat tejaḥ śarīram ajahāt
45. O dear one (Dhritarashtra), while he (Prahlāda) was pondering, then, O greatly effulgent one, his embodied glory (tejas), which had taken the form of a shadow, departed from his body.
तमपृच्छन्महाकायं प्रह्रादः को भवानिति ।
प्रत्याह ननु शीलोऽस्मि त्यक्तो गच्छाम्यहं त्वया ॥४६॥
46. tamapṛcchanmahākāyaṁ prahrādaḥ ko bhavāniti ,
pratyāha nanu śīlo'smi tyakto gacchāmyahaṁ tvayā.
46. tam apṛcchan mahākāyam prahrādaḥ kaḥ bhavān iti
pratyāha nanu śīlaḥ asmi tyaktaḥ gacchāmi aham tvayā
46. prahrādaḥ tam mahākāyam kaḥ bhavān iti apṛcchan saḥ
pratyāha nanu aham śīlaḥ asmi tvayā tyaktaḥ gacchāmi
46. Prahlāda asked that mighty-bodied being, "Who are you?" He replied, "Indeed, I am good conduct (śīla). I am departing, having been forsaken by you."
तस्मिन्द्विजवरे राजन्वत्स्याम्यहमनिन्दितम् ।
योऽसौ शिष्यत्वमागम्य त्वयि नित्यं समाहितः ।
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितं तद्वै शक्रं चान्वविशत्प्रभो ॥४७॥
47. tasmindvijavare rājanvatsyāmyahamaninditam ,
yo'sau śiṣyatvamāgamya tvayi nityaṁ samāhitaḥ ,
ityuktvāntarhitaṁ tadvai śakraṁ cānvaviśatprabho.
47. tasmin dvijavare rājan vatsyāmi aham
aninditam yaḥ asau śiṣyatvam āgamya
tvayi nityam samāhitaḥ iti uktvā antarhitam
tat vai śakram ca anvaviśat prabho
47. rājan prabho aham aninditam tasmin
dvijavare vatsyāmi yaḥ asau śiṣyatvam
āgamya tvayi nityam samāhitaḥ iti uktvā
tat vai antarhitam ca śakram anvaviśat
47. "O King, I shall reside blamelessly in that most excellent Brahmin who, having accepted discipleship, is perpetually devoted to you." Having spoken thus, that being indeed vanished and entered Indra (Śakra), O Lord.
तस्मिंस्तेजसि याते तु तादृग्रूपस्ततोऽपरः ।
शरीरान्निःसृतस्तस्य को भवानिति चाब्रवीत् ॥४८॥
48. tasmiṁstejasi yāte tu tādṛgrūpastato'paraḥ ,
śarīrānniḥsṛtastasya ko bhavāniti cābravīt.
48. tasmin tejasi yāte tu tādṛgrūpaḥ tataḥ aparaḥ
śarīrāt niḥsṛtaḥ tasya kaḥ bhavān iti ca abravīt
48. tu tasmin tejasi yāte,
tataḥ aparaḥ tādṛgrūpaḥ tasya śarīrāt niḥsṛtaḥ ca kaḥ bhavān iti abravīt
48. But when that splendor (tejas) had departed, another being, similar in form, emerged from his (Prahlāda's) body and asked, "Who are you?"
धर्मं प्रह्राद मां विद्धि यत्रासौ द्विजसत्तमः ।
तत्र यास्यामि दैत्येन्द्र यतः शीलं ततो ह्यहम् ॥४९॥
49. dharmaṁ prahrāda māṁ viddhi yatrāsau dvijasattamaḥ ,
tatra yāsyāmi daityendra yataḥ śīlaṁ tato hyaham.
49. dharmam prahrāda mām viddhi yatra asau dvijasattamaḥ
tatra yāsyāmi daityendra yataḥ śīlam tataḥ hi aham
49. prahrāda daityendra mām dharmam viddhi yatra asau dvijasattamaḥ (asti),
tatra aham yāsyāmi yataḥ hi śīlam (asti),
tataḥ aham (asmi)
49. "O Prahlāda, O Lord of Daityas, know me to be "dharma" (natural law). Wherever that most excellent Brahmin is, there I shall go, for indeed, where good conduct (śīla) resides, there I am."
ततोऽपरो महाराज प्रज्वलन्निव तेजसा ।
शरीरान्निःसृतस्तस्य प्रह्रादस्य महात्मनः ॥५०॥
50. tato'paro mahārāja prajvalanniva tejasā ,
śarīrānniḥsṛtastasya prahrādasya mahātmanaḥ.
50. tataḥ aparaḥ mahārāja prajvalan iva tejasā
śarīrāt niḥsṛtaḥ tasya prahrādasya mahātmanaḥ
50. mahārāja tataḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ prahrādasya
śarīrāt prajvalan iva tejasā aparaḥ niḥsṛtaḥ
50. Then, O great king, another [being], as if blazing with radiance, emerged from the body of that great-souled Prahlāda.
को भवानिति पृष्टश्च तमाह स महाद्युतिः ।
सत्यमस्म्यसुरेन्द्राग्र्य यास्येऽहं धर्ममन्विह ॥५१॥
51. ko bhavāniti pṛṣṭaśca tamāha sa mahādyutiḥ ,
satyamasmyasurendrāgrya yāsye'haṁ dharmamanviha.
51. kaḥ bhavān iti pṛṣṭaḥ ca tam āha saḥ mahādyutiḥ
satyam asmi asurendrāgrya yāsye aham dharmam anu iha
51. ca kaḥ bhavān iti pṛṣṭaḥ saḥ mahādyutiḥ tam āha
asurendrāgrya aham satyam asmi iha dharmam anu yāsye
51. And when asked, 'Who are you, sir?', that greatly radiant one replied to him: 'O foremost among the lords of asuras, I am Truth. I shall follow natural law (dharma) here.'
तस्मिन्ननुगते धर्मं पुरुषे पुरुषोऽपरः ।
निश्चक्राम ततस्तस्मात्पृष्टश्चाह महात्मना ।
वृत्तं प्रह्राद मां विद्धि यतः सत्यं ततो ह्यहम् ॥५२॥
52. tasminnanugate dharmaṁ puruṣe puruṣo'paraḥ ,
niścakrāma tatastasmātpṛṣṭaścāha mahātmanā ,
vṛttaṁ prahrāda māṁ viddhi yataḥ satyaṁ tato hyaham.
52. tasmin anugate dharmam puruṣe puruṣaḥ
aparaḥ niścakrāma tataḥ tasmāt pṛṣṭaḥ
ca āha mahātmanā vṛttam prahrāda
mām viddhi yataḥ satyam tataḥ hi aham
52. dharmam anugate tasmin puruṣe aparaḥ puruṣaḥ tataḥ tasmāt niścakrāma ca mahātmanā pṛṣṭaḥ āha prahrāda mām vṛttam viddhi yataḥ satyam,
tataḥ hi aham
52. When that person (Truth) had conformed to natural law (dharma), another person emerged from Prahlāda's body. And being asked by the great-souled one (Prahlāda), he said: 'O Prahlāda, know me to be Conduct, for where there is Truth, there indeed am I.'
तस्मिन्गते महाश्वेतः शरीरात्तस्य निर्ययौ ।
पृष्टश्चाह बलं विद्धि यतो वृत्तमहं ततः ।
इत्युक्त्वा च ययौ तत्र यतो वृत्तं नराधिप ॥५३॥
53. tasmingate mahāśvetaḥ śarīrāttasya niryayau ,
pṛṣṭaścāha balaṁ viddhi yato vṛttamahaṁ tataḥ ,
ityuktvā ca yayau tatra yato vṛttaṁ narādhipa.
53. tasmin gate mahāśvetaḥ śarīrāt tasya
niryayau pṛṣṭaḥ ca āha balam viddhi
yataḥ vṛttam aham tataḥ iti uktvā ca
yayau tatra yataḥ vṛttam narādhipa
53. tasmin gate tasya śarīrāt mahāśvetaḥ niryayau ca pṛṣṭaḥ āha balam viddhi yataḥ vṛttam tataḥ aham (asmi).
narādhipa iti uktvā ca tatra yayau yataḥ vṛttam (āsīt).
53. When he (Conduct) had departed, a great white one emerged from Prahlāda's body. And when asked, he replied: 'Know me to be Strength (bala), for where there is Conduct, there indeed am I.' Having said this, O king (narādhipa), he also went there where Conduct was.
ततः प्रभामयी देवी शरीरात्तस्य निर्ययौ ।
तामपृच्छत्स दैत्येन्द्रः सा श्रीरित्येवमब्रवीत् ॥५४॥
54. tataḥ prabhāmayī devī śarīrāttasya niryayau ,
tāmapṛcchatsa daityendraḥ sā śrīrityevamabravīt.
54. tataḥ prabhāmayī devī śarīrāt tasya niryayau tām
apṛcchat saḥ daityendraḥ sā śrīḥ iti evam abravīt
54. tataḥ tasya śarīrāt prabhāmayī devī niryayau saḥ
daityendraḥ tām apṛcchat sā śrīḥ iti evam abravīt
54. Then, a radiant goddess issued forth from his body. The king of demons asked her, and she replied, "I am Śrī (Lakṣmī)."
उषितास्मि सुखं वीर त्वयि सत्यपराक्रमे ।
त्वया त्यक्ता गमिष्यामि बलं यत्र ततो ह्यहम् ॥५५॥
55. uṣitāsmi sukhaṁ vīra tvayi satyaparākrame ,
tvayā tyaktā gamiṣyāmi balaṁ yatra tato hyaham.
55. uṣitā asmi sukham vīra tvayi satyaparākrame
tvayā tyaktā gamiṣyāmi balam yatra tataḥ hi aham
55. vīra satyaparākrame tvayi sukham uṣitā asmi
tvayā tyaktā aham yatra balam tataḥ hi gamiṣyāmi
55. O hero of true valor, I have resided happily in you. Now, abandoned by you, I shall go where strength is, for that is where I belong.
ततो भयं प्रादुरासीत्प्रह्रादस्य महात्मनः ।
अपृच्छत च तां भूयः क्व यासि कमलालये ॥५६॥
56. tato bhayaṁ prādurāsītprahrādasya mahātmanaḥ ,
apṛcchata ca tāṁ bhūyaḥ kva yāsi kamalālaye.
56. tataḥ bhayam prādurāsīt prahrādasya mahātmanaḥ
apṛcchata ca tām bhūyaḥ kva yāsi kamalālaye
56. tataḥ mahātmanaḥ prahrādasya bhayam prādurāsīt
ca tām bhūyaḥ apṛcchata kamalālaye kva yāsi
56. Then, fear arose in the great-souled Prahlāda. And he asked her again, "Where are you going, O dweller in a lotus (Lakṣmī)?"
त्वं हि सत्यव्रता देवी लोकस्य परमेश्वरी ।
कश्चासौ ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठस्तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥५७॥
57. tvaṁ hi satyavratā devī lokasya parameśvarī ,
kaścāsau brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhastattvamicchāmi veditum.
57. tvam hi satyavratā devī lokasya parameśvarī kaḥ
ca asau brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaḥ tattvam icchāmi veditum
57. tvam hi satyavratā devī lokasya parameśvarī ca
kaḥ asau brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaḥ tattvam veditum icchāmi
57. You are indeed the truthful goddess, the supreme lady of the world. And who is that best among Brahmins? I desire to know this truth (tattva).
श्रीरुवाच ।
स शक्रो ब्रह्मचारी च यस्त्वया चोपशिक्षितः ।
त्रैलोक्ये ते यदैश्वर्यं तत्तेनापहृतं प्रभो ॥५८॥
58. śrīruvāca ,
sa śakro brahmacārī ca yastvayā copaśikṣitaḥ ,
trailokye te yadaiśvaryaṁ tattenāpahṛtaṁ prabho.
58. śrīḥ uvāca sa śakraḥ brahmacārī ca yaḥ tvayā ca upaśikṣitaḥ
trailokye te yat aiśvaryam tat tena apahṛtam prabho
58. prabho śrīḥ uvāca yaḥ sa śakraḥ ca tvayā brahmacārī
upaśikṣitaḥ ca te yat aiśvaryam trailokye tat tena apahṛtam
58. Śrī said, "That very Śakra, who was instructed by you as a celibate student, has stolen all the dominion you possessed in the three worlds, O Lord."
शीलेन हि त्वया लोकाः सर्वे धर्मज्ञ निर्जिताः ।
तद्विज्ञाय महेन्द्रेण तव शीलं हृतं प्रभो ॥५९॥
59. śīlena hi tvayā lokāḥ sarve dharmajña nirjitāḥ ,
tadvijñāya mahendreṇa tava śīlaṁ hṛtaṁ prabho.
59. śīlena hi tvayā lokāḥ sarve dharmajña nirjitāḥ
tat vijñāya mahendreṇa tava śīlam hṛtam prabho
59. dharmajña prabho hi sarve lokāḥ tvayā śīlena
nirjitāḥ tat vijñāya mahendreṇa tava śīlam hṛtam
59. O knower of righteousness (dharma), all worlds were indeed conquered by you through your excellent character. Mahendra, understanding this, has now stolen your character, O Lord.
धर्मः सत्यं तथा वृत्तं बलं चैव तथा ह्यहम् ।
शीलमूला महाप्राज्ञ सदा नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥६०॥
60. dharmaḥ satyaṁ tathā vṛttaṁ balaṁ caiva tathā hyaham ,
śīlamūlā mahāprājña sadā nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ.
60. dharmaḥ satyam tathā vṛttam balam ca eva tathā hi
aham śīlamūlā mahāprājña sadā na asti atra saṃśayaḥ
60. mahāprājña atra saṃśayaḥ na asti sadā dharmaḥ satyam
tathā vṛttam ca eva balam tathā hi aham śīlamūlā
60. O greatly wise one, righteousness (dharma), truth, good conduct, strength, and indeed I myself (Śrī), are always founded upon good character. There is no doubt about this.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा गता तु श्रीस्ते च सर्वे युधिष्ठिर ।
दुर्योधनस्तु पितरं भूय एवाब्रवीदिदम् ॥६१॥
61. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktvā gatā tu śrīste ca sarve yudhiṣṭhira ,
duryodhanastu pitaraṁ bhūya evābravīdidam.
61. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam uktvā gatā tu śrīḥ te ca sarve
yudhiṣṭhira duryodhanaḥ tu pitaram bhūyaḥ eva abravīt idam
61. yudhiṣṭhira bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tu śrīḥ gatā ca te
sarve duryodhanaḥ tu bhūyaḥ eva idam pitaram abravīt
61. Bhishma said, "Having spoken thus, Śrī (the goddess of prosperity) then departed, and all of them likewise, O Yudhishthira. But Duryodhana, for his part, again spoke these words to his father."
शीलस्य तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेत्तुं कौरवनन्दन ।
प्राप्यते च यथा शीलं तमुपायं वदस्व मे ॥६२॥
62. śīlasya tattvamicchāmi vettuṁ kauravanandana ,
prāpyate ca yathā śīlaṁ tamupāyaṁ vadasva me.
62. śīlasya tattvam icchāmi vettum kāuravanandana
prāpyate ca yathā śīlam tam upāyam vadasva me
62. kāuravanandana śīlasya tattvam vettum icchāmi
ca yathā śīlam prāpyate tam upāyam me vadasva
62. O descendant of Kuru, I wish to understand the true nature of good character (śīla), and please tell me the method by which such character is attained.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
सोपायं पूर्वमुद्दिष्टं प्रह्रादेन महात्मना ।
संक्षेपतस्तु शीलस्य शृणु प्राप्तिं नराधिप ॥६३॥
63. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
sopāyaṁ pūrvamuddiṣṭaṁ prahrādena mahātmanā ,
saṁkṣepatastu śīlasya śṛṇu prāptiṁ narādhipa.
63. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca sa-upāyam pūrvam uddiṣṭam prahrādena
mahātmanā saṅkṣepataḥ tu śīlasya śṛṇu prāptim narādhipa
63. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca narādhipa sa-upāyam pūrvam mahātmanā
prahrādena uddiṣṭam tu saṅkṣepataḥ śīlasya prāptim śṛṇu
63. Dhritarashtra said: The method (of attaining good character) was previously expounded by the great-souled Prahlada. But now, O ruler of men, listen to a brief account of how good character (śīla) is attained.
अद्रोहः सर्वभूतेषु कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ।
अनुग्रहश्च दानं च शीलमेतत्प्रशस्यते ॥६४॥
64. adrohaḥ sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā ,
anugrahaśca dānaṁ ca śīlametatpraśasyate.
64. adrohaḥ sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā
anugrahaḥ ca dānam ca śīlam etat praśasyate
64. sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā adrohaḥ ca
anugrahaḥ ca dānam etat śīlam praśasyate
64. Non-harmfulness towards all beings through action, thought, and speech; compassion; and generosity (dāna) - this is praised as good character (śīla).
यदन्येषां हितं न स्यादात्मनः कर्म पौरुषम् ।
अपत्रपेत वा येन न तत्कुर्यात्कथंचन ॥६५॥
65. yadanyeṣāṁ hitaṁ na syādātmanaḥ karma pauruṣam ,
apatrapeta vā yena na tatkuryātkathaṁcana.
65. yat anyeṣām hitam na syāt ātmanaḥ karma pauruṣam
apatrapeta vā yena na tat kuryāt kathañcana
65. yat anyeṣām hitam na syāt ātmanaḥ pauruṣam karma
vā yena apatrapeta tat na kathañcana kuryāt
65. One should never, under any circumstances, perform any action (karma) or personal endeavor that is not beneficial to others, or by which one would feel ashamed.
तत्तु कर्म तथा कुर्याद्येन श्लाघेत संसदि ।
एतच्छीलं समासेन कथितं कुरुसत्तम ॥६६॥
66. tattu karma tathā kuryādyena ślāgheta saṁsadi ,
etacchīlaṁ samāsena kathitaṁ kurusattama.
66. tat tu karma tathā kuryāt yena ślāgheta saṃsadi
etat śīlam samāsena kathitam kurusattama
66. kurusattama tat karma tathā kuryāt yena
saṃsadi ślāgheta etat śīlam samāsena kathitam
66. One should perform that action (karma) in such a way that one is praised in an assembly. This is the conduct briefly explained, O best among the Kurus.
यद्यप्यशीला नृपते प्राप्नुवन्ति क्वचिच्छ्रियम् ।
न भुञ्जते चिरं तात समूलाश्च पतन्ति ते ॥६७॥
67. yadyapyaśīlā nṛpate prāpnuvanti kvacicchriyam ,
na bhuñjate ciraṁ tāta samūlāśca patanti te.
67. yadi api aśīlāḥ nṛpate prāpnuvanti kvacit śriyam
na bhuñjate ciram tāta samūlāḥ ca patanti te
67. nṛpate tāta yadi api aśīlāḥ kvacit śriyam
prāpnuvanti te ciram na bhuñjate ca samūlāḥ patanti
67. Even if, O king, those of ill character sometimes attain prosperity (śrī), they do not enjoy it for long, O dear one, and they fall completely, even with their roots.
एतद्विदित्वा तत्त्वेन शीलवान्भव पुत्रक ।
यदीच्छसि श्रियं तात सुविशिष्टां युधिष्ठिरात् ॥६८॥
68. etadviditvā tattvena śīlavānbhava putraka ,
yadīcchasi śriyaṁ tāta suviśiṣṭāṁ yudhiṣṭhirāt.
68. etat viditvā tattvena śīlavān bhava putraka yadi
icchasi śriyam tāta suviśiṣṭām yudhiṣṭhirāt
68. putraka tāta etat tattvena viditvā śīlavān bhava
yadi yudhiṣṭhirāt suviśiṣṭām śriyam icchasi
68. Therefore, knowing this truth, become a person of good character, O son! If you desire, O dear one, prosperity (śrī) even greater than Yudhishthira's.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एतत्कथितवान्पुत्रे धृतराष्ट्रो नराधिप ।
एतत्कुरुष्व कौन्तेय ततः प्राप्स्यसि तत्फलम् ॥६९॥
69. bhīṣma uvāca ,
etatkathitavānputre dhṛtarāṣṭro narādhipa ,
etatkuruṣva kaunteya tataḥ prāpsyasi tatphalam.
69. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca etat kathitavān putre dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ narādhipaḥ
etat kuruṣva kaunteya tataḥ prāpsyasi tat phalam
69. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca narādhipaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ etat putre kathitavān
kaunteya etat kuruṣva tataḥ tat phalam prāpsyasi
69. Bhishma said: Dhritarashtra, the king, told this to his son. O son of Kunti, you should do this, and then you will obtain that result.
