शिशुपाल उवाच ।
विभीषिकाभिर्बह्वीभिर्भीषयन्सर्वपार्थिवान् ।
न व्यपत्रपसे कस्माद्वृद्धः सन्कुलपांसनः ॥१॥
1. śiśupāla uvāca ,
vibhīṣikābhirbahvībhirbhīṣayansarvapārthivān ,
na vyapatrapase kasmādvṛddhaḥ sankulapāṁsanaḥ.
1. śiśupālaḥ uvāca vibhīṣikābhiḥ bahvībhiḥ bhīṣayan
sarvapārthivān na vyapatrapase kasmāt vṛddhaḥ san kulapāṃsanaḥ
1. Śiśupāla said: 'Being old and a disgrace to your family (kulapāṃsana), why are you not ashamed, constantly intimidating all kings with so many threats?'
युक्तमेतत्तृतीयायां प्रकृतौ वर्तता त्वया ।
वक्तुं धर्मादपेतार्थं त्वं हि सर्वकुरूत्तमः ॥२॥
2. yuktametattṛtīyāyāṁ prakṛtau vartatā tvayā ,
vaktuṁ dharmādapetārthaṁ tvaṁ hi sarvakurūttamaḥ.
2. yuktam etat tṛtīyāyām prakṛtau vartatā tvayā
vaktum dharmāt apetārtham tvam hi sarvakurūttamaḥ
2. It is appropriate that you, who are acting in a neutral capacity, speak words that deviate from (natural) law (dharma), for you are indeed the foremost among all Kurus.
नावि नौरिव संबद्धा यथान्धो वान्धमन्वियात् ।
तथाभूता हि कौरव्या भीष्म येषां त्वमग्रणीः ॥३॥
3. nāvi nauriva saṁbaddhā yathāndho vāndhamanviyāt ,
tathābhūtā hi kauravyā bhīṣma yeṣāṁ tvamagraṇīḥ.
3. nāvi nauḥ iva sambaddhā yathā andhaḥ vāndham anviyāt
tathābhūtā hi kauravyā bhīşma yeṣām tvam agraṇīḥ
3. Like a boat tied to another boat, or just as a blind man would follow another blind man, such is indeed the state of the Kauravas, O Bhishma, of whom you are the leader.
पूतनाघातपूर्वाणि कर्माण्यस्य विशेषतः ।
त्वया कीर्तयतास्माकं भूयः प्रच्यावितं मनः ॥४॥
4. pūtanāghātapūrvāṇi karmāṇyasya viśeṣataḥ ,
tvayā kīrtayatāsmākaṁ bhūyaḥ pracyāvitaṁ manaḥ.
4. pūtanāghātapūrvāṇi karmāṇi asya viśeşataḥ tvayā
kīrtayatā asmākam bhūyaḥ pracyāvitam manaḥ
4. By your recounting of his deeds, especially those beginning with the slaying of Pūtanā, our minds have been further agitated.
अवलिप्तस्य मूर्खस्य केशवं स्तोतुमिच्छतः ।
कथं भीष्म न ते जिह्वा शतधेयं विदीर्यते ॥५॥
5. avaliptasya mūrkhasya keśavaṁ stotumicchataḥ ,
kathaṁ bhīṣma na te jihvā śatadheyaṁ vidīryate.
5. avaliptasya mūrkhasya keśavam stotum icchataḥ
katham bhīşma na te jihvā śatadheyam vidīryate
5. O Bhishma, how is it that your tongue does not split into a hundred pieces, while you, arrogant and foolish, desire to praise Keśava (Krishna)?
यत्र कुत्सा प्रयोक्तव्या भीष्म बालतरैर्नरैः ।
तमिमं ज्ञानवृद्धः सन्गोपं संस्तोतुमिच्छसि ॥६॥
6. yatra kutsā prayoktavyā bhīṣma bālatarairnaraiḥ ,
tamimaṁ jñānavṛddhaḥ sangopaṁ saṁstotumicchasi.
6. yatra kutsā prayoktavyā bhīṣma bālataraiḥ naraiḥ
tam imam jñānavṛddhaḥ san gopam saṃstotum icchasi
6. O Bhishma, where even very young men should express censure, you, despite being advanced in knowledge, wish to praise this cowherd.
यद्यनेन हता बाल्ये शकुनिश्चित्रमत्र किम् ।
तौ वाश्ववृषभौ भीष्म यौ न युद्धविशारदौ ॥७॥
7. yadyanena hatā bālye śakuniścitramatra kim ,
tau vāśvavṛṣabhau bhīṣma yau na yuddhaviśāradau.
7. yadi anena hatā bālye śakuniḥ citram atra kim
tau vā aśvavṛṣabhau bhīṣma yau na yuddhaviśāradau
7. If a bird-demon was killed by him in childhood, what is so extraordinary in that? Or if it was those two, O Bhishma, the horse and the bull, who were not skilled in battle.
चेतनारहितं काष्ठं यद्यनेन निपातितम् ।
पादेन शकटं भीष्म तत्र किं कृतमद्भुतम् ॥८॥
8. cetanārahitaṁ kāṣṭhaṁ yadyanena nipātitam ,
pādena śakaṭaṁ bhīṣma tatra kiṁ kṛtamadbhutam.
8. yadi anena cetanārahitam kāṣṭham nipātitam
pādena śakaṭam bhīṣma tatra kim kṛtam adbhutam
8. If by him an inanimate wooden cart was toppled with his foot, O Bhishma, what amazing deed was performed there?
वल्मीकमात्रः सप्ताहं यद्यनेन धृतोऽचलः ।
तदा गोवर्धनो भीष्म न तच्चित्रं मतं मम ॥९॥
9. valmīkamātraḥ saptāhaṁ yadyanena dhṛto'calaḥ ,
tadā govardhano bhīṣma na taccitraṁ mataṁ mama.
9. yadi anena valmīkamātraḥ saptāham dhṛtaḥ acalaḥ
tadā govardhanaḥ bhīṣma na tat citram matam mama
9. Even if a mountain (Govardhana), merely the size of an anthill, was held up by him for a week, O Bhishma, I would not consider that a marvel.
भुक्तमेतेन बह्वन्नं क्रीडता नगमूर्धनि ।
इति ते भीष्म शृण्वानाः परं विस्मयमागताः ॥१०॥
10. bhuktametena bahvannaṁ krīḍatā nagamūrdhani ,
iti te bhīṣma śṛṇvānāḥ paraṁ vismayamāgatāḥ.
10. bhuktam etena bahu annam krīḍatā naga mūrdhani
iti te bhīṣma śṛṇvānāḥ param vismayam āgatāḥ
10. Bhishma, when they heard that much food had been consumed by him while he was playing on the mountaintop, they were greatly astonished.
यस्य चानेन धर्मज्ञ भुक्तमन्नं बलीयसः ।
स चानेन हतः कंस इत्येतन्न महाद्भुतम् ॥११॥
11. yasya cānena dharmajña bhuktamannaṁ balīyasaḥ ,
sa cānena hataḥ kaṁsa ityetanna mahādbhutam.
11. yasya ca anena dharmajña bhuktam annam balīyasaḥ
saḥ ca anena hataḥ kaṃsaḥ iti etat na mahā adbhutam
11. O knower of natural law (dharma), since this one ate the food of a mighty individual, it is no great wonder that Kaṃsa was killed by him.
न ते श्रुतमिदं भीष्म नूनं कथयतां सताम् ।
यद्वक्ष्ये त्वामधर्मज्ञ वाक्यं कुरुकुलाधम ॥१२॥
12. na te śrutamidaṁ bhīṣma nūnaṁ kathayatāṁ satām ,
yadvakṣye tvāmadharmajña vākyaṁ kurukulādhama.
12. na te śrutam idam bhīṣma nūnam kathayatām satām
yat vakṣye tvām adharmajña vākyam kurukula adhamam
12. Bhishma, you surely have not heard this from virtuous people who narrate such things. What I am about to declare to you, O ignorant of natural law (dharma) and lowest of the Kuru family, is a statement.
स्त्रीषु गोषु न शस्त्राणि पातयेद्ब्राह्मणेषु च ।
यस्य चान्नानि भुञ्जीत यश्च स्याच्छरणागतः ॥१३॥
13. strīṣu goṣu na śastrāṇi pātayedbrāhmaṇeṣu ca ,
yasya cānnāni bhuñjīta yaśca syāccharaṇāgataḥ.
13. strīṣu goṣu na śastrāṇi pātayet brāhmaṇeṣu ca
yasya ca annāni bhuñjīta yaḥ ca syāt śaraṇāgataḥ
13. One should not use weapons against women, cows, or Brahmins. Likewise, one should not use them against someone whose food one has consumed, or against anyone who has taken refuge.
इति सन्तोऽनुशासन्ति सज्जना धर्मिणः सदा ।
भीष्म लोके हि तत्सर्वं वितथं त्वयि दृश्यते ॥१४॥
14. iti santo'nuśāsanti sajjanā dharmiṇaḥ sadā ,
bhīṣma loke hi tatsarvaṁ vitathaṁ tvayi dṛśyate.
14. iti santaḥ anuśāsanti sajjanāḥ dharmiṇaḥ sadā
bhīṣma loke hi tat sarvam vitatham tvayi dṛśyate
14. Thus, saints, good people, and those who uphold natural law (dharma) always give instruction. Yet, O Bhishma, all of that (teaching) appears false in your case in this world.
ज्ञानवृद्धं च वृद्धं च भूयांसं केशवं मम ।
अजानत इवाख्यासि संस्तुवन्कुरुसत्तम ।
गोघ्नः स्त्रीघ्नश्च सन्भीष्म कथं संस्तवमर्हति ॥१५॥
15. jñānavṛddhaṁ ca vṛddhaṁ ca bhūyāṁsaṁ keśavaṁ mama ,
ajānata ivākhyāsi saṁstuvankurusattama ,
goghnaḥ strīghnaśca sanbhīṣma kathaṁ saṁstavamarhati.
15. jñānavṛddham ca vṛddham ca bhūyāṃsam
keśavam mama ajānataḥ iva ākhyāsi
saṃstuvan kurusattama goghnaḥ strīghnaḥ
ca san bhīṣma katham saṃstavam arhati
15. O best of Kurus, you speak as if ignorant, even while praising my Keshava, who is great, advanced in knowledge, and aged. O Bhishma, how can someone who is a killer of cows and women deserve such praise?
असौ मतिमतां श्रेष्ठो य एष जगतः प्रभुः ।
संभावयति यद्येवं त्वद्वाक्याच्च जनार्दनः ।
एवमेतत्सर्वमिति सर्वं तद्वितथं ध्रुवम् ॥१६॥
16. asau matimatāṁ śreṣṭho ya eṣa jagataḥ prabhuḥ ,
saṁbhāvayati yadyevaṁ tvadvākyācca janārdanaḥ ,
evametatsarvamiti sarvaṁ tadvitathaṁ dhruvam.
16. asau matimatām śreṣṭhaḥ yaḥ eṣaḥ
jagataḥ prabhuḥ saṃbhāvayati yadi evam
tvadvākyāt ca janārdanaḥ evam etat
sarvam iti sarvam tat vitatham dhruvam
16. If this Janardana, who is the foremost among the wise and the lord of the world, were to accept (saṃbhāvayati) something as true just based on your words, then everything declared as 'this is so' would certainly be false (vitatham).
न गाथा गाथिनं शास्ति बहु चेदपि गायति ।
प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्यथा ॥१७॥
17. na gāthā gāthinaṁ śāsti bahu cedapi gāyati ,
prakṛtiṁ yānti bhūtāni bhūliṅgaśakuniryathā.
17. na gāthā gāthinam śāsti bahu cet api gāyati
prakṛtim yānti bhūtāni bhūliṅgaśakuniḥ yathā
17. A song does not instruct the singer, even if he sings it extensively. Living beings follow their intrinsic nature (prakṛti), just like the Bhulinga bird (bhūliṅgaśakuni).
नूनं प्रकृतिरेषा ते जघन्या नात्र संशयः ।
अतः पापीयसी चैषां पाण्डवानामपीष्यते ॥१८॥
18. nūnaṁ prakṛtireṣā te jaghanyā nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
ataḥ pāpīyasī caiṣāṁ pāṇḍavānāmapīṣyate.
18. nūnam prakṛtiḥ eṣā te jaghanyā na atra saṃśayaḥ
| ataḥ pāpīyasī ca eṣām pāṇḍavānām api īṣyate
18. Certainly, this intrinsic nature (prakṛti) of yours is the lowest; there is no doubt about that. Therefore, it is regarded as even more wicked than that of these Pāṇḍavas.
येषामर्च्यतमः कृष्णस्त्वं च येषां प्रदर्शकः ।
धर्मवाक्त्वमधर्मज्ञः सतां मार्गादवप्लुतः ॥१९॥
19. yeṣāmarcyatamaḥ kṛṣṇastvaṁ ca yeṣāṁ pradarśakaḥ ,
dharmavāktvamadharmajñaḥ satāṁ mārgādavaplutaḥ.
19. yeṣām arcyatamaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tvam ca yeṣām pradarśakaḥ
| dharmavāk tvam adharmajñaḥ satām mārgāt avaplutaḥ
19. Kṛṣṇa is the most worshipful to them, and you are their guide. Yet, you, who speak of natural law (dharma), are truly ignorant of natural law (dharma) and have deviated from the path of the virtuous.
को हि धर्मिणमात्मानं जानञ्ज्ञानवतां वरः ।
कुर्याद्यथा त्वया भीष्म कृतं धर्ममवेक्षता ॥२०॥
20. ko hi dharmiṇamātmānaṁ jānañjñānavatāṁ varaḥ ,
kuryādyathā tvayā bhīṣma kṛtaṁ dharmamavekṣatā.
20. kaḥ hi dharmiṇam ātmānam jānan jñānavatām varaḥ |
kuryāt yathā tvayā bhīṣma kṛtam dharmam avekṣatā
20. Indeed, who, being the best among the wise, would know his own self (ātman) to be a person of natural law (dharmin) and yet act as you, Bhīṣma, have done, despite being one who considers natural law (dharma)?
अन्यकामा हि धर्मज्ञ कन्यका प्राज्ञमानिना ।
अम्बा नामेति भद्रं ते कथं सापहृता त्वया ॥२१॥
21. anyakāmā hi dharmajña kanyakā prājñamāninā ,
ambā nāmeti bhadraṁ te kathaṁ sāpahṛtā tvayā.
21. anyakāmā hi dharmajña kanyakā prājñamāninā |
ambā nāma iti bhadram te katham sā apahṛtā tvayā
21. O knower of natural law (dharma), how indeed was that maiden, named Ambā, who desired another man, abducted by you, you who considered yourself wise? May you be well.
यां त्वयापहृतां भीष्म कन्यां नैषितवान्नृपः ।
भ्राता विचित्रवीर्यस्ते सतां वृत्तमनुष्ठितः ॥२२॥
22. yāṁ tvayāpahṛtāṁ bhīṣma kanyāṁ naiṣitavānnṛpaḥ ,
bhrātā vicitravīryaste satāṁ vṛttamanuṣṭhitaḥ.
22. yām tvayā apahṛtām bhīṣma kanyām na iṣitavān nṛpaḥ
bhrātā vicitravīryaḥ te satām vṛttam anuṣṭhitaḥ
22. O Bhishma, your brother Vichitravirya, the king, did not accept the maiden whom you had abducted, thereby upholding the conduct of the virtuous.
दारयोर्यस्य चान्येन मिषतः प्राज्ञमानिनः ।
तव जातान्यपत्यानि सज्जनाचरिते पथि ॥२३॥
23. dārayoryasya cānyena miṣataḥ prājñamāninaḥ ,
tava jātānyapatyāni sajjanācarite pathi.
23. dārayoḥ yasya ca anyena miṣataḥ prājñamāninaḥ
tava jātāni apatyāni sajjanācarite pathi
23. And while you, who consider yourself wise, merely watched, children were born to your (late) brother's two wives by another man, following the path sanctioned by the virtuous (dharma).
न हि धर्मोऽस्ति ते भीष्म ब्रह्मचर्यमिदं वृथा ।
यद्धारयसि मोहाद्वा क्लीबत्वाद्वा न संशयः ॥२४॥
24. na hi dharmo'sti te bhīṣma brahmacaryamidaṁ vṛthā ,
yaddhārayasi mohādvā klībatvādvā na saṁśayaḥ.
24. na hi dharmaḥ asti te bhīṣma brahmacaryam idam vṛthā
yat dhārayasi mohāt vā klībatvāt vā na saṃśayaḥ
24. O Bhishma, there is indeed no (true) righteousness (dharma) in this celibacy (brahmacarya) of yours; it is futile. You uphold it either out of delusion or out of impotence; there is no doubt about this.
न त्वहं तव धर्मज्ञ पश्याम्युपचयं क्वचित् ।
न हि ते सेविता वृद्धा य एवं धर्ममब्रुवन् ॥२५॥
25. na tvahaṁ tava dharmajña paśyāmyupacayaṁ kvacit ,
na hi te sevitā vṛddhā ya evaṁ dharmamabruvan.
25. na tu aham tava dharmajña paśyāmi upacayam kvacit
na hi te sevitāḥ vṛddhāḥ ye evam dharmam abruvan
25. But O knower of (dharma), I do not see any advantage for you anywhere (in your conduct). For you have surely not served those elders who spoke of (dharma) in such a way.
इष्टं दत्तमधीतं च यज्ञाश्च बहुदक्षिणाः ।
सर्वमेतदपत्यस्य कलां नार्हति षोडशीम् ॥२६॥
26. iṣṭaṁ dattamadhītaṁ ca yajñāśca bahudakṣiṇāḥ ,
sarvametadapatyasya kalāṁ nārhati ṣoḍaśīm.
26. iṣṭam dattam adhītam ca yajñāḥ ca bahudakṣiṇāḥ
sarvam etat apatyasya kalām na arhati ṣoḍaśīm
26. All acts of worship, charitable giving, scriptural study, and Vedic rituals (yajña) accompanied by many gifts – none of this amounts to even a sixteenth part for a person without offspring.
व्रतोपवासैर्बहुभिः कृतं भवति भीष्म यत् ।
सर्वं तदनपत्यस्य मोघं भवति निश्चयात् ॥२७॥
27. vratopavāsairbahubhiḥ kṛtaṁ bhavati bhīṣma yat ,
sarvaṁ tadanapatyasya moghaṁ bhavati niścayāt.
27. vrata upavāsaiḥ bahubhiḥ kṛtam bhavati bhīṣma yat
sarvam tat anapatyasya mogham bhavati niścayāt
27. O Bhishma, whatever is accomplished through many vows and fasts – all that, for a childless person, surely becomes fruitless.
सोऽनपत्यश्च वृद्धश्च मिथ्याधर्मानुशासनात् ।
हंसवत्त्वमपीदानीं ज्ञातिभ्यः प्राप्नुया वधम् ॥२८॥
28. so'napatyaśca vṛddhaśca mithyādharmānuśāsanāt ,
haṁsavattvamapīdānīṁ jñātibhyaḥ prāpnuyā vadham.
28. saḥ anapatyaḥ ca vṛddhaḥ ca mithyā dharma anuśāsanāt
haṃsavattvam api idānīm jñātibhyaḥ prāpnuyāt vadham
28. He, being childless and old, due to misguided adherence to natural law (dharma), may now even face destruction from his kinsmen, like a swan.
एवं हि कथयन्त्यन्ये नरा ज्ञानविदः पुरा ।
भीष्म यत्तदहं सम्यग्वक्ष्यामि तव शृण्वतः ॥२९॥
29. evaṁ hi kathayantyanye narā jñānavidaḥ purā ,
bhīṣma yattadahaṁ samyagvakṣyāmi tava śṛṇvataḥ.
29. evam hi kathayanti anye narāḥ jñānavidaḥ purā
bhīṣma yat tat aham samyak vakṣyāmi tava śṛṇvataḥ
29. O Bhishma, indeed, this is what other wise men (jñānavidaḥ) spoke of in ancient times. I will now explain that (matter) clearly to you while you listen.
वृद्धः किल समुद्रान्ते कश्चिद्धंसोऽभवत्पुरा ।
धर्मवागन्यथावृत्तः पक्षिणः सोऽनुशास्ति ह ॥३०॥
30. vṛddhaḥ kila samudrānte kaściddhaṁso'bhavatpurā ,
dharmavāganyathāvṛttaḥ pakṣiṇaḥ so'nuśāsti ha.
30. vṛddhaḥ kila samudrānte kaścit haṃsaḥ abhavat purā
dharmavāk anyathāvṛttaḥ pakṣiṇaḥ saḥ anuśāsti ha
30. It is said that long ago, at the edge of the ocean, there lived a certain old swan. Although his own conduct was not in accordance with it, he would instruct the other birds on natural law (dharma).
धर्मं चरत माधर्ममिति तस्य वचः किल ।
पक्षिणः शुश्रुवुर्भीष्म सततं धर्मवादिनः ॥३१॥
31. dharmaṁ carata mādharmamiti tasya vacaḥ kila ,
pakṣiṇaḥ śuśruvurbhīṣma satataṁ dharmavādinaḥ.
31. dharmam carata mādharmam iti tasya vacaḥ kila
pakṣiṇaḥ śuśruvuḥ bhīṣma satatam dharmavādinaḥ
31. They say that his words were: 'Practice natural law (dharma), do not practice unrighteousness (adharma)!' O Bhishma, the birds, who themselves constantly spoke of natural law (dharma), heard him.
अथास्य भक्ष्यमाजह्रुः समुद्रजलचारिणः ।
अण्डजा भीष्म तस्यान्ये धर्मार्थमिति शुश्रुम ॥३२॥
32. athāsya bhakṣyamājahruḥ samudrajalacāriṇaḥ ,
aṇḍajā bhīṣma tasyānye dharmārthamiti śuśruma.
32. atha asya bhakṣyam ājahruḥ samudrajalacāriṇaḥ
aṇḍajāḥ bhīṣma tasya anye dharmārtham iti śuśruma
32. Then, O Bhishma, other egg-born creatures, those dwelling in the ocean waters, brought him food. We heard that they did this for the sake of natural law (dharma).
तस्य चैव समभ्याशे निक्षिप्याण्डानि सर्वशः ।
समुद्राम्भस्यमोदन्त चरन्तो भीष्म पक्षिणः ॥३३॥
33. tasya caiva samabhyāśe nikṣipyāṇḍāni sarvaśaḥ ,
samudrāmbhasyamodanta caranto bhīṣma pakṣiṇaḥ.
33. tasya ca eva samabhyāśe nikṣipya aṇḍāni sarvaśaḥ
samudrāmbhasi amodanta carantaḥ bhīṣma pakṣiṇaḥ
33. And indeed, O Bhishma, having deposited all their eggs completely near him, the birds rejoiced while moving about in the ocean waters.
तेषामण्डानि सर्वेषां भक्षयामास पापकृत् ।
स हंसः संप्रमत्तानामप्रमत्तः स्वकर्मणि ॥३४॥
34. teṣāmaṇḍāni sarveṣāṁ bhakṣayāmāsa pāpakṛt ,
sa haṁsaḥ saṁpramattānāmapramattaḥ svakarmaṇi.
34. teṣām aṇḍāni sarveṣām bhakṣayāmāsa pāpakṛt saḥ
haṃsaḥ saṃpramattānām apramattaḥ svakarmaṇi
34. The wicked (swan), diligent in his own actions (karma), devoured the eggs of all those (other birds) who were extremely negligent.
ततः प्रक्षीयमाणेषु तेष्वण्डेष्वण्डजोऽपरः ।
अशङ्कत महाप्राज्ञस्तं कदाचिद्ददर्श ह ॥३५॥
35. tataḥ prakṣīyamāṇeṣu teṣvaṇḍeṣvaṇḍajo'paraḥ ,
aśaṅkata mahāprājñastaṁ kadāciddadarśa ha.
35. tataḥ prakṣīyamāṇeṣu teṣu aṇḍeṣu aṇḍajaḥ aparaḥ
aśaṅkata mahāprājñaḥ tam kadācit dadarśa ha
35. Then, as those eggs were perishing, another very wise bird (aṇḍaja) became suspicious, and indeed, he saw him (the wicked swan) one day.
ततः स कथयामास दृष्ट्वा हंसस्य किल्बिषम् ।
तेषां परमदुःखार्तः स पक्षी सर्वपक्षिणाम् ॥३६॥
36. tataḥ sa kathayāmāsa dṛṣṭvā haṁsasya kilbiṣam ,
teṣāṁ paramaduḥkhārtaḥ sa pakṣī sarvapakṣiṇām.

36. Then, that bird, greatly afflicted by the immense sorrow (of the other birds), having seen the swan's offense, narrated it to all the birds.
ततः प्रत्यक्षतो दृष्ट्वा पक्षिणस्ते समागताः ।
निजघ्नुस्तं तदा हंसं मिथ्यावृत्तं कुरूद्वह ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ pratyakṣato dṛṣṭvā pakṣiṇaste samāgatāḥ ,
nijaghnustaṁ tadā haṁsaṁ mithyāvṛttaṁ kurūdvaha.
37. tataḥ pratyakṣataḥ dṛṣṭvā pakṣiṇaḥ te samāgatāḥ
nijaghnuḥ tam tadā haṃsam mithyāvṛttam kurūdvaha
37. O scion of Kuru, then those birds, having gathered and witnessed (the misdeed) directly, immediately killed that deceitful swan.
ते त्वां हंससधर्माणमपीमे वसुधाधिपाः ।
निहन्युर्भीष्म संक्रुद्धाः पक्षिणस्तमिवाण्डजम् ॥३८॥
38. te tvāṁ haṁsasadharmāṇamapīme vasudhādhipāḥ ,
nihanyurbhīṣma saṁkruddhāḥ pakṣiṇastamivāṇḍajam.
38. te tvām haṃsasadharmaṇam api ime vasudhādhipāḥ
nihanyuḥ bhīṣma saṃkruddhāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ tam iva aṇḍajam
38. O Bhishma, these kings, intensely enraged, might even kill you, who are noble like a swan, just as other birds would kill a bird that preys on eggs.
गाथामप्यत्र गायन्ति ये पुराणविदो जनाः ।
भीष्म यां तां च ते सम्यक्कथयिष्यामि भारत ॥३९॥
39. gāthāmapyatra gāyanti ye purāṇavido janāḥ ,
bhīṣma yāṁ tāṁ ca te samyakkathayiṣyāmi bhārata.

bhīṣma yām tām ca te samyak kathayiṣyāmi bhārata
39. O Bhishma, O Bhārata, I will fully recount to you that ancient verse which those who know the Puranas recite concerning this matter.
अन्तरात्मनि विनिहिते रौषि पत्ररथ वितथम् ।
अण्डभक्षणमशुचि ते कर्म वाचमतिशयते ॥४०॥
40. antarātmani vinihite; rauṣi patraratha vitatham ,
aṇḍabhakṣaṇamaśuci te; karma vācamatiśayate.

40. O bird, though your inner being (ātman) is established (in purity), you speak (or boast) in vain. Your act of eating eggs is impure; your action (karma) far outweighs your words.
