जनमेजय उवाच ।
त्वत्तः श्रुतमिदं ब्रह्मन्देवदानवरक्षसाम् ।
अंशावतरणं सम्यग्गन्धर्वाप्सरसां तथा ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
tvattaḥ śrutamidaṁ brahmandevadānavarakṣasām ,
aṁśāvataraṇaṁ samyaggandharvāpsarasāṁ tathā.
1. janamejaya uvāca tvattaḥ śrutam idam brahman devadānavarakṣasām
aṁśāvataraṇam samyak gandharvāpsarasām tathā
1. Janamejaya said: O Brahmin, I have heard from you in full detail this account of the descent of divine parts of the Devas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas, and also of the Gandharvas and Apsarases.
इमं तु भूय इच्छामि कुरूणां वंशमादितः ।
कथ्यमानं त्वया विप्र विप्रर्षिगणसंनिधौ ॥२॥
2. imaṁ tu bhūya icchāmi kurūṇāṁ vaṁśamāditaḥ ,
kathyamānaṁ tvayā vipra viprarṣigaṇasaṁnidhau.
2. imam tu bhūyaḥ icchāmi kurūṇām vaṁśam āditaḥ
kathyamanam tvayā vipra viprarṣigaṇasaṁnidhau
2. But, O Brahmin, I now further desire to hear this lineage of the Kurus, narrated by you from the very beginning, in the presence of this assembly of Brahmin sages.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
पौरवाणां वंशकरो दुःषन्तो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
पृथिव्याश्चतुरन्ताया गोप्ता भरतसत्तम ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
pauravāṇāṁ vaṁśakaro duḥṣanto nāma vīryavān ,
pṛthivyāścaturantāyā goptā bharatasattama.
3. Vaiśampāyana uvāca pauravāṇām vaṃśakaraḥ duḥṣantaḥ nāma
vīryavān pṛthivyāḥ caturantāyāḥ goptā bharatasattama
3. Vaiśampāyana said: "O best among the Bhāratas, there was a valiant king named Duḥṣanta, who was the perpetuator of the Paurava lineage and the protector of the entire earth, which extends to its four ends."
चतुर्भागं भुवः कृत्स्नं स भुङ्क्ते मनुजेश्वरः ।
समुद्रावरणांश्चापि देशान्स समितिंजयः ॥४॥
4. caturbhāgaṁ bhuvaḥ kṛtsnaṁ sa bhuṅkte manujeśvaraḥ ,
samudrāvaraṇāṁścāpi deśānsa samitiṁjayaḥ.
4. catur_bhāgam bhuvaḥ kṛtsnam sa bhuṅkte manujeśvaraḥ
samudrāvaraṇān ca api deśān sa samitiṃjayaḥ
4. That lord of men, the conqueror in battle, ruled the entire four quarters of the earth, including those regions bordered by the oceans.
आम्लेच्छाटविकान्सर्वान्स भुङ्क्ते रिपुमर्दनः ।
रत्नाकरसमुद्रान्तांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यजनावृतान् ॥५॥
5. āmlecchāṭavikānsarvānsa bhuṅkte ripumardanaḥ ,
ratnākarasamudrāntāṁścāturvarṇyajanāvṛtān.
5. āmlecchāṭavikān sarvān sa bhuṅkte ripumardanaḥ
ratnākarasamudrāntān ca cāturvarṇyajanāvṛtān
5. He, the subduer of enemies, ruled over all regions, including those inhabited by Mlecchas and forest dwellers, those extending to the oceans and gem-mines, and those populated by people of the four social classes.
न वर्णसंकरकरो नाकृष्यकरकृज्जनः ।
न पापकृत्कश्चिदासीत्तस्मिन्राजनि शासति ॥६॥
6. na varṇasaṁkarakaro nākṛṣyakarakṛjjanaḥ ,
na pāpakṛtkaścidāsīttasminrājani śāsati.
6. na varṇasaṃkarakaraḥ na akṛṣyakarakṛt janaḥ
na pāpakṛt kaścit āsīt tasmin rājani śāsati
6. While that king was ruling, no one caused a mixture of social classes, no one made the land uncultivable or imposed illegal taxes, and no one committed any sin.
धर्म्यां रतिं सेवमाना धर्मार्थावभिपेदिरे ।
तदा नरा नरव्याघ्र तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे ॥७॥
7. dharmyāṁ ratiṁ sevamānā dharmārthāvabhipedire ,
tadā narā naravyāghra tasmiñjanapadeśvare.
7. dharmyām ratim sevamānāḥ dharmārthau abhipedire
tadā narāḥ naravyāghra tasmin janapadeśvare
7. O tiger among men, at that time, when that ruler of the country was reigning, people who pursued righteous enjoyment attained both dharma and artha.
नासीच्चोरभयं तात न क्षुधाभयमण्वपि ।
नासीद्व्याधिभयं चापि तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे ॥८॥
8. nāsīccorabhayaṁ tāta na kṣudhābhayamaṇvapi ,
nāsīdvyādhibhayaṁ cāpi tasmiñjanapadeśvare.
8. na āsīt corabhayam tāta na kṣudhābhayam aṇu api
na āsīt vyādhibhayam ca api tasmin janapadeśvare
8. O dear one, under that ruler of the land, there was no fear of thieves, nor was there any fear of hunger, even a little. There was also no fear of disease.
स्वैर्धर्मै रेमिरे वर्णा दैवे कर्मणि निःस्पृहाः ।
तमाश्रित्य महीपालमासंश्चैवाकुतोभयाः ॥९॥
9. svairdharmai remire varṇā daive karmaṇi niḥspṛhāḥ ,
tamāśritya mahīpālamāsaṁścaivākutobhayāḥ.
9. svaiḥ dharmaih remire varṇāḥ daive karmaṇi niḥspṛhāḥ
tam āśritya mahīpālam āsan ca eva akutobhayāḥ
9. The social classes (varṇas) rejoiced in their own dharmas, free from desire for ritualistic deeds. Relying on that protector of the earth, they were indeed fearless from all quarters.
कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यः सस्यानि फलवन्ति च ।
सर्वरत्नसमृद्धा च मही वसुमती तदा ॥१०॥
10. kālavarṣī ca parjanyaḥ sasyāni phalavanti ca ,
sarvaratnasamṛddhā ca mahī vasumatī tadā.
10. kālavarṣī ca parjanyaḥ sasyāni phalavanti
ca sarvaratnasamṛddhā ca mahī vasumatī tadā
10. Then, the rain clouds showered rain in due season, and the crops were abundant. The earth was rich with all jewels and filled with treasures.
स चाद्भुतमहावीर्यो वज्रसंहननो युवा ।
उद्यम्य मन्दरं दोर्भ्यां हरेत्सवनकाननम् ॥११॥
11. sa cādbhutamahāvīryo vajrasaṁhanano yuvā ,
udyamya mandaraṁ dorbhyāṁ haretsavanakānanam.
11. saḥ ca adbhutamahāvīryaḥ vajrasaṃhananaḥ yuvā
udyamya mandaram dorbhyām haret savanakānanam
11. And he, a young man of amazing great valor and an adamantine body, could lift Mount Mandara with both arms and carry it away, along with its forests and groves.
धनुष्यथ गदायुद्धे त्सरुप्रहरणेषु च ।
नागपृष्ठेऽश्वपृष्ठे च बभूव परिनिष्ठितः ॥१२॥
12. dhanuṣyatha gadāyuddhe tsarupraharaṇeṣu ca ,
nāgapṛṣṭhe'śvapṛṣṭhe ca babhūva pariniṣṭhitaḥ.
12. dhanuṣi atha gadāyuddhe tsaruprāharaṇeṣu ca
nāgapṛṣṭhe aśvapṛṣṭhe ca babhūva pariniṣṭhitaḥ
12. Moreover, he was highly skilled in archery, mace fighting, and the use of daggers, as well as in riding elephants and horses.
बले विष्णुसमश्चासीत्तेजसा भास्करोपमः ।
अक्षुब्धत्वेऽर्णवसमः सहिष्णुत्वे धरासमः ॥१३॥
13. bale viṣṇusamaścāsīttejasā bhāskaropamaḥ ,
akṣubdhatve'rṇavasamaḥ sahiṣṇutve dharāsamaḥ.
13. bale viṣṇusamaḥ ca āsīt tejasā bhāskaropamaḥ
akṣubdhatve arṇavasamaḥ sahiṣṇutve dharāsamaḥ
13. He was equal to Vishnu in strength, like the sun in splendor, like the ocean in unagitatedness, and like the earth in endurance.
संमतः स महीपालः प्रसन्नपुरराष्ट्रवान् ।
भूयो धर्मपरैर्भावैर्विदितं जनमावसत् ॥१४॥
14. saṁmataḥ sa mahīpālaḥ prasannapurarāṣṭravān ,
bhūyo dharmaparairbhāvairviditaṁ janamāvasat.
14. saṃmataḥ sa mahīpālaḥ prasannapurarāṣṭravān
bhūyaḥ dharmaparaiḥ bhāvaiḥ viditaṃ janam āvasat
14. That respected king, who had a contented city and kingdom, moreover, dwelt among people who were known for their dispositions, which were largely devoted to dharma.
