वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्मिन्प्रयाते दुर्धर्षे यदूनामृषभस्ततः ।
अब्रवीत्पुण्डरीकाक्षः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasminprayāte durdharṣe yadūnāmṛṣabhastataḥ ,
abravītpuṇḍarīkākṣaḥ kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, after that unconquerable one had departed, the chief among the Yadus, the lotus-eyed (puṇḍarīkākṣa) Krishna, spoke to Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti.
एष पाण्डव ते भ्राता पुत्रशोकमपारयन् ।
जिघांसुर्द्रौणिमाक्रन्दे याति भारत भारतः ॥२॥
2. eṣa pāṇḍava te bhrātā putraśokamapārayan ,
jighāṁsurdrauṇimākrande yāti bhārata bhārataḥ.
2. eṣaḥ pāṇḍava te bhrātā putraśokam apārayan
jighāṃsuḥ drauṇim ākrande yāti bhārata bhārataḥ
2. O Pāṇḍava, your brother, unable to bear the grief for his son, is going to the battlefield, intending to kill Drauṇi, O Bhārata, that great descendant of Bharata.
भीमः प्रियस्ते सर्वेभ्यो भ्रातृभ्यो भरतर्षभ ।
तं कृच्छ्रगतमद्य त्वं कस्मान्नाभ्यवपद्यसे ॥३॥
3. bhīmaḥ priyaste sarvebhyo bhrātṛbhyo bharatarṣabha ,
taṁ kṛcchragatamadya tvaṁ kasmānnābhyavapadyase.
3. bhīmaḥ priyaḥ te sarvebhyaḥ bhrātṛbhyaḥ bharatarṣabha
tam kṛcchragatam adya tvam kasmāt na abhyavapadyase
3. bharatarṣabha,
bhīmaḥ te sarvebhyaḥ bhrātṛbhyaḥ priyaḥ.
tvam adya kṛcchragatam tam kasmāt na abhyavapadyase?
3. O best among the Bharatas, Bhima is dearer to you than all (your) brothers. Why do you not come to his aid today, now that he has fallen into such distress?
यत्तदाचष्ट पुत्राय द्रोणः परपुरंजयः ।
अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो नाम दहेद्यत्पृथिवीमपि ॥४॥
4. yattadācaṣṭa putrāya droṇaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ ,
astraṁ brahmaśiro nāma dahedyatpṛthivīmapi.
4. yat tadā ācaṣṭa putrāya droṇaḥ parapurañjayaḥ
astram brahmaśiras nāma dahet yat pṛthivīm api
4. parapurañjayaḥ droṇaḥ tadā putrāya brahmaśiras nāma astram ācaṣṭa,
yat pṛthivīm api dahet.
4. Drona, the conqueror of enemy cities, then taught his son about the weapon named Brahmasiras, which has the power to incinerate even the entire earth.
तन्महात्मा महाभागः केतुः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
प्रत्यपादयदाचार्यः प्रीयमाणो धनंजयम् ॥५॥
5. tanmahātmā mahābhāgaḥ ketuḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
pratyapādayadācāryaḥ prīyamāṇo dhanaṁjayam.
5. tat mahātmā mahābhāgaḥ ketuḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām
pratyapādayat ācāryaḥ prīyamāṇaḥ dhanañjayam
5. mahātmā mahābhāgaḥ ācāryaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām ketuḥ prīyamāṇaḥ tat dhanañjayam pratyapādayat.
5. That great-souled, illustrious teacher, who was the foremost among all archers, being pleased, imparted that (weapon) to Dhananjaya (Arjuna).
तत्पुत्रोऽस्यैवमेवैनमन्वयाचदमर्षणः ।
ततः प्रोवाच पुत्राय नातिहृष्टमना इव ॥६॥
6. tatputro'syaivamevainamanvayācadamarṣaṇaḥ ,
tataḥ provāca putrāya nātihṛṣṭamanā iva.
6. tatputraḥ asya evam eva enam anvayācat amarṣaṇaḥ
tataḥ provāca putrāya na atihṛṣṭamanāḥ iva
6. asya tatputraḥ amarṣaṇaḥ evam eva enam anvayācat.
tataḥ (droṇaḥ) putrāya na atihṛṣṭamanāḥ iva provāca.
6. Drona's son (Ashvatthama), being impatient, requested that very (weapon) from him in the same manner. Then (Drona) spoke to his son, appearing as if his mind was not greatly pleased.
विदितं चापलं ह्यासीदात्मजस्य महात्मनः ।
सर्वधर्मविदाचार्यो नान्विषत्सततं सुतम् ॥७॥
7. viditaṁ cāpalaṁ hyāsīdātmajasya mahātmanaḥ ,
sarvadharmavidācāryo nānviṣatsatataṁ sutam.
7. viditam cāpalam hi āsīt ātmajasya mahātmanaḥ
sarvadharma-vit ācāryaḥ na anviṣat satatam sutam
7. sarvadharma-vit ācāryaḥ mahātmanaḥ ātmajasya
cāpalam viditam hi āsīt na satatam sutam anviṣat
7. The teacher, who understood all aspects of natural law (dharma), was indeed aware of the impetuous nature of his great-souled son. Therefore, he did not constantly pursue his son.
परमापद्गतेनापि न स्म तात त्वया रणे ।
इदमस्त्रं प्रयोक्तव्यं मानुषेषु विशेषतः ॥८॥
8. paramāpadgatenāpi na sma tāta tvayā raṇe ,
idamastraṁ prayoktavyaṁ mānuṣeṣu viśeṣataḥ.
8. parama-āpad-gatena api na sma tāta tvayā raṇe
idam astram prayoktavyam mānuṣeṣu viśeṣataḥ
8. tāta parama-āpad-gatena api tvayā raṇe idam
astram mānuṣeṣu viśeṣataḥ na sma prayoktavyam
8. My dear son, even when you are in extreme peril in battle, this weapon should certainly not be employed by you, especially against human beings.
इत्युक्तवान्गुरुः पुत्रं द्रोणः पश्चादथोक्तवान् ।
न त्वं जातु सतां मार्गे स्थातेति पुरुषर्षभ ॥९॥
9. ityuktavānguruḥ putraṁ droṇaḥ paścādathoktavān ,
na tvaṁ jātu satāṁ mārge sthāteti puruṣarṣabha.
9. iti uktavān guruḥ putram droṇaḥ paścāt atha uktavān
na tvam jātu satām mārge sthātā iti puruṣa-ṛṣabha
9. guruḥ droṇaḥ putram iti uktavān paścāt atha
puruṣa-ṛṣabha tvam satām mārge na jātu sthātā iti uktavān
9. Thus spoke the teacher Droṇa to his son. Afterward, he also declared, "O best among men (puruṣa), you will certainly never remain on the path of the virtuous!"
स तदाज्ञाय दुष्टात्मा पितुर्वचनमप्रियम् ।
निराशः सर्वकल्याणैः शोचन्पर्यपतन्महीम् ॥१०॥
10. sa tadājñāya duṣṭātmā piturvacanamapriyam ,
nirāśaḥ sarvakalyāṇaiḥ śocanparyapatanmahīm.
10. saḥ tad ājñāya duṣṭa-ātmā pituḥ vacanam apriyam
nirāśaḥ sarva-kalyāṇaiḥ śocan pari-apatat mahīm
10. saḥ duṣṭa-ātmā pituḥ apriyam vacanam tad ājñāya
sarva-kalyāṇaiḥ nirāśaḥ śocan mahīm pari-apatat
10. He, whose nature (ātman) was corrupt, understood his father's unpleasant words. Despairing of all good fortune, he lamented and wandered the earth.
ततस्तदा कुरुश्रेष्ठ वनस्थे त्वयि भारत ।
अवसद्द्वारकामेत्य वृष्णिभिः परमार्चितः ॥११॥
11. tatastadā kuruśreṣṭha vanasthe tvayi bhārata ,
avasaddvārakāmetya vṛṣṇibhiḥ paramārcitaḥ.
11. tataḥ tadā kuruśreṣṭha vanasthe tvayi bhārata
avasat dvārakām etya vṛṣṇibhiḥ paramārcitaḥ
11. kuruśreṣṭha bhārata tadā tvayi vanasthe tataḥ
dvārakām etya vṛṣṇibhiḥ paramārcitaḥ avasat
11. O best of the Kurus, O Bhārata, at that time, while you were dwelling in the forest, he arrived in Dvārakā and resided there, highly honored by the Vṛṣṇis.
स कदाचित्समुद्रान्ते वसन्द्रारवतीमनु ।
एक एकं समागम्य मामुवाच हसन्निव ॥१२॥
12. sa kadācitsamudrānte vasandrāravatīmanu ,
eka ekaṁ samāgamya māmuvāca hasanniva.
12. saḥ kadācit samudrānte vasat dvāravatīm
anu ekaḥ ekam samāgamya mām uvāca hasan iva
12. kadācit saḥ dvāravatīm anu samudrānte vasat
ekaḥ mām ekam samāgamya hasan iva uvāca
12. Once, while dwelling near the sea-shore (samudrānta) adjacent to Dvāravatī, he, having met me alone, spoke to me as if smiling.
यत्तदुग्रं तपः कृष्ण चरन्सत्यपराक्रमः ।
अगस्त्याद्भारताचार्यः प्रत्यपद्यत मे पिता ॥१३॥
13. yattadugraṁ tapaḥ kṛṣṇa caransatyaparākramaḥ ,
agastyādbhāratācāryaḥ pratyapadyata me pitā.
13. yat tat ugram tapaḥ kṛṣṇa caran satyaparākramaḥ
agastyāt bhāratācāryaḥ pratyapadyata me pitā
13. kṛṣṇa bhāratācārya me pitā yat tat ugram tapaḥ
caran satyaparākramaḥ agastyāt pratyapadyata
13. O Krishna, O teacher of the Bhāratas, my father, whose might (parākrama) was truly great, performed severe austerity (tapas) and obtained that (power/knowledge/weapon, implied) from Agastya.
अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो नाम देवगन्धर्वपूजितम् ।
तदद्य मयि दाशार्ह यथा पितरि मे तथा ॥१४॥
14. astraṁ brahmaśiro nāma devagandharvapūjitam ,
tadadya mayi dāśārha yathā pitari me tathā.
14. astram brahmaśiraḥ nāma devagandharvapūjitam
tat adya mayi dāśārha yathā pitari me tathā
14. dāśārha tat astram brahmaśiraḥ nāma
devagandharvapūjitam adya mayi yathā me pitari tathā
14. O Daśārha, that weapon named Brahmaśiras, revered by gods and gandharvas, is now within me, just as it was with my father.
अस्मत्तस्तदुपादाय दिव्यमस्त्रं यदूत्तम ।
ममाप्यस्त्रं प्रयच्छ त्वं चक्रं रिपुहरं रणे ॥१५॥
15. asmattastadupādāya divyamastraṁ yadūttama ,
mamāpyastraṁ prayaccha tvaṁ cakraṁ ripuharaṁ raṇe.
15. asmat-tataḥ tat upādāya divyam astram yadūttama mama
api astram prayaccha tvam cakram ripuharam raṇe
15. yadūttama tvam asmat-tataḥ tat divyam astram upādāya
api mama astram prayaccha ripuharam cakram raṇe
15. O best among the Yadus, after taking that divine weapon from me, you should also give me a weapon—the discus that destroys enemies in battle.
स राजन्प्रीयमाणेन मयाप्युक्तः कृताञ्जलिः ।
याचमानः प्रयत्नेन मत्तोऽस्त्रं भरतर्षभ ॥१६॥
16. sa rājanprīyamāṇena mayāpyuktaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
yācamānaḥ prayatnena matto'straṁ bharatarṣabha.
16. saḥ rājan prīyamāṇena mayā api uktaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
yācamānaḥ prayatnena mattaḥ astram bharatarṣabha
16. rājan bharatarṣabha saḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ prayatnena
mattaḥ astram yācamānaḥ mayā api prīyamāṇena uktaḥ
16. O King, O best among the Bhāratas, he (Arjuna), with folded hands, earnestly requested a weapon from me, and I, being pleased, also spoke to him.
देवदानवगन्धर्वमनुष्यपतगोरगाः ।
न समा मम वीर्यस्य शतांशेनापि पिण्डिताः ॥१७॥
17. devadānavagandharvamanuṣyapatagoragāḥ ,
na samā mama vīryasya śatāṁśenāpi piṇḍitāḥ.
17. deva-dānava-gandharva-manuṣya-pataga-uragāḥ
na samāḥ mama vīryasya śatāṃśena api piṇḍitāḥ
17. deva-dānava-gandharva-manuṣya-pataga-uragāḥ
api piṇḍitāḥ mama vīryasya śatāṃśena na samāḥ
17. Gods, demons, Gandharvas, humans, birds, and serpents, even when gathered together, are not equal to a hundredth part of my power.
इदं धनुरियं शक्तिरिदं चक्रमियं गदा ।
यद्यदिच्छसि चेदस्त्रं मत्तस्तत्तद्ददानि ते ॥१८॥
18. idaṁ dhanuriyaṁ śaktiridaṁ cakramiyaṁ gadā ,
yadyadicchasi cedastraṁ mattastattaddadāni te.
18. idam dhanuḥ iyam śaktiḥ idam cakram iyam gadā yat
yat icchasi cet astram mattaḥ tat tat dadāni te
18. idam dhanuḥ iyam śaktiḥ idam cakram iyam gadā cet
yat yat astram mattaḥ icchasi tat tat te dadāni
18. Here is this bow, this spear (śakti), this discus, and this mace. If you desire any (such) weapon from me, I shall give that to you.
यच्छक्नोषि समुद्यन्तुं प्रयोक्तुमपि वा रणे ।
तद्गृहाण विनास्त्रेण यन्मे दातुमभीप्ससि ॥१९॥
19. yacchaknoṣi samudyantuṁ prayoktumapi vā raṇe ,
tadgṛhāṇa vināstreṇa yanme dātumabhīpsasi.
19. yat śaknoṣi samudyantum prayoktum api vā raṇe
tat gṛhāṇa vināstreṇa yat me dātum abhīpsasi
19. yat samudyantum prayoktum api vā raṇe śaknoṣi,
yat me dātum abhīpsasi,
tat vināstreṇa gṛhāṇa
19. Whatever you are capable of raising and employing in battle, take that without using any (other) weapon, if you wish to offer it to me.
स सुनाभं सहस्रारं वज्रनाभमयस्मयम् ।
वव्रे चक्रं महाबाहो स्पर्धमानो मया सह ॥२०॥
20. sa sunābhaṁ sahasrāraṁ vajranābhamayasmayam ,
vavre cakraṁ mahābāho spardhamāno mayā saha.
20. sa sunābham sahasrāram vajranābhamayasmayam
vavre cakram mahābāho spardhamānaḥ mayā saha
20. mahābāho sa mayā saha spardhamānaḥ sunābham
sahasrāram vajranābhamayasmayam cakram vavre
20. O mighty-armed one, competing with me, he chose the discus (chakra) which had a beautiful hub, a thousand spokes, and a hub as hard as a thunderbolt (vajra) and made of iron.
गृहाण चक्रमित्युक्तो मया तु तदनन्तरम् ।
जग्राहोपेत्य सहसा चक्रं सव्येन पाणिना ।
न चैतदशकत्स्थानात्संचालयितुमच्युत ॥२१॥
21. gṛhāṇa cakramityukto mayā tu tadanantaram ,
jagrāhopetya sahasā cakraṁ savyena pāṇinā ,
na caitadaśakatsthānātsaṁcālayitumacyuta.
21. gṛhāṇa cakram iti uktaḥ mayā tu
tat anantaram jagrāha upetya sahasā
cakram savyena pāṇinā na ca etat
aśakat sthānāt saṁcālayitum acyuta
21. acyuta! mayā tu "gṛhāṇa cakram" iti uktaḥ (saḥ) tat anantaram sahasā upetya savyena pāṇinā cakram jagrāha.
ca etat sthānāt saṁcālayitum na aśakat.
21. Then, upon being told by me, 'Take the discus (chakra)', he quickly approached and grasped the discus (chakra) with his left hand. But, O Acyuta, he was unable to move it from its spot.
अथ तद्दक्षिणेनापि ग्रहीतुमुपचक्रमे ।
सर्वयत्नेन तेनापि गृह्णन्नेतदकल्पयत् ॥२२॥
22. atha taddakṣiṇenāpi grahītumupacakrame ,
sarvayatnena tenāpi gṛhṇannetadakalpayat.
22. atha tat dakṣiṇena api grahītum upacakrame
sarvayatnena tena api gṛhṇan etat akalpayat
22. atha saḥ tat dakṣiṇena api grahītum upacakrame.
tena api sarvayatnena gṛhṇan etat akalpayat.
22. Then he also began to grasp that (discus) with his right hand. Even with all his effort, while grasping it, he succeeded in this.
ततः सर्वबलेनापि यच्चैतन्न शशाक सः ।
उद्धर्तुं वा चालयितुं द्रौणिः परमदुर्मनाः ।
कृत्वा यत्नं परं श्रान्तः स न्यवर्तत भारत ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ sarvabalenāpi yaccaitanna śaśāka saḥ ,
uddhartuṁ vā cālayituṁ drauṇiḥ paramadurmanāḥ ,
kṛtvā yatnaṁ paraṁ śrāntaḥ sa nyavartata bhārata.
23. tataḥ sarvabalena api yat ca etat na
śaśāka saḥ uddhartum vā cālayitum
drauṇiḥ paramadurmanāḥ kṛtvā yatnam
param śrāntaḥ saḥ nyavartata bhārata
23. bhārata tataḥ drauṇiḥ paramadurmanāḥ
saḥ sarvabalena api yat ca etat na
uddhartum vā cālayitum śaśāka param
yatnam kṛtvā śrāntaḥ saḥ nyavartata
23. Then, even with all his might, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), greatly disheartened, was unable to lift or move it. Having made a supreme effort and become exhausted, he turned back, O Bhārata.
निवृत्तमथ तं तस्मादभिप्रायाद्विचेतसम् ।
अहमामन्त्र्य सुस्निग्धमश्वत्थामानमब्रुवम् ॥२४॥
24. nivṛttamatha taṁ tasmādabhiprāyādvicetasam ,
ahamāmantrya susnigdhamaśvatthāmānamabruvam.
24. nivṛttam atha tam tasmāt abhiprāyāt vicetasam
aham āmantrya susnigdham aśvatthāmānam abruvam
24. atha aham tasmāt abhiprāyāt nivṛttam vicetasam
tam aśvatthāmānam susnigdham āmantrya abruvam
24. Then, I addressed Aśvatthāman, who was bewildered and had returned from that intention, very affectionately, and spoke to him.
यः स देवमनुष्येषु प्रमाणं परमं गतः ।
गाण्डीवधन्वा श्वेताश्वः कपिप्रवरकेतनः ॥२५॥
25. yaḥ sa devamanuṣyeṣu pramāṇaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ ,
gāṇḍīvadhanvā śvetāśvaḥ kapipravaraketanaḥ.
25. yaḥ saḥ devamanuṣyeṣu pramāṇam param gataḥ
gāṇḍīvadhanvā śvetāśvaḥ kapipravaraketanaḥ
25. saḥ yaḥ devamanuṣyeṣu param pramāṇam gataḥ
gāṇḍīvadhanvā śvetāśvaḥ kapipravaraketanaḥ
25. He who among gods and men has reached the highest standard (of excellence), who bears the Gāṇḍīva bow, has white horses, and whose banner is marked by the chief of monkeys.
यः साक्षाद्देवदेवेशं शितिकण्ठमुमापतिम् ।
द्वंद्वयुद्धे पराजिष्णुस्तोषयामास शंकरम् ॥२६॥
26. yaḥ sākṣāddevadeveśaṁ śitikaṇṭhamumāpatim ,
dvaṁdvayuddhe parājiṣṇustoṣayāmāsa śaṁkaram.
26. yaḥ sākṣāt devadeveśam śitikaṇṭham umāpatim
dvandvayuddhe parājiṣṇuḥ toṣayāmāsa śaṃkaram
26. yaḥ dvandvayuddhe parājiṣṇuḥ sākṣāt devadeveśam
śitikaṇṭham umāpatim śaṃkaram toṣayāmāsa
26. He who directly pleased Śaṅkara, the Lord of lords among gods, the blue-throated (Śitikaṇṭha), the husband of Umā, by being victorious in a duel.
यस्मात्प्रियतरो नास्ति ममान्यः पुरुषो भुवि ।
नादेयं यस्य मे किंचिदपि दाराः सुतास्तथा ॥२७॥
27. yasmātpriyataro nāsti mamānyaḥ puruṣo bhuvi ,
nādeyaṁ yasya me kiṁcidapi dārāḥ sutāstathā.
27. yasmāt priyataraḥ na asti mama anyaḥ puruṣaḥ bhuvi
na adeyam yasya me kiñcit api dārāḥ sutāḥ tathā
27. yasmāt anyaḥ puruṣaḥ mama bhuvi priyataraḥ na asti
yasya me dārāḥ sutāḥ api kiñcit na adeyam tathā
27. There is no other person (puruṣa) on this earth dearer to me than him. For his sake, there is nothing I would not give, not even my wife and children.
तेनापि सुहृदा ब्रह्मन्पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।
नोक्तपूर्वमिदं वाक्यं यत्त्वं मामभिभाषसे ॥२८॥
28. tenāpi suhṛdā brahmanpārthenākliṣṭakarmaṇā ,
noktapūrvamidaṁ vākyaṁ yattvaṁ māmabhibhāṣase.
28. tena api suhṛdā brahman pārhena akliṣṭakarmaṇā na
uktapūrvam idam vākyam yat tvam mām abhibhāṣase
28. brahman,
akliṣṭakarmaṇā suhṛdā tena api pārhena,
yat tvam mām abhibhāṣase,
idam vākyam na uktapūrvam.
28. O Brahmin, even by that friend Pārtha, whose deeds (karma) are unblemished, this statement that you are now speaking to me has never been uttered before.
ब्रह्मचर्यं महद्घोरं चीर्त्वा द्वादशवार्षिकम् ।
हिमवत्पार्श्वमभ्येत्य यो मया तपसार्चितः ॥२९॥
29. brahmacaryaṁ mahadghoraṁ cīrtvā dvādaśavārṣikam ,
himavatpārśvamabhyetya yo mayā tapasārcitaḥ.
29. brahmacharyam mahat ghoram cīrtvā dvādaśavārṣikam
himavat pārśvam abhyetya yaḥ mayā tapasā arcitaḥ
29. yaḥ dvādaśavārṣikam mahat ghoram brahmacharyam cīrtvā himavat pārśvam abhyetya,
mayā tapasā arcitaḥ.

29. Having completed a great and severe twelve-year period of student life (brahmacarya), and having approached the slopes of the Himavat (Himalayas), he whom I worshipped with austerity (tapas)...
समानव्रतचारिण्यां रुक्मिण्यां योऽन्वजायत ।
सनत्कुमारस्तेजस्वी प्रद्युम्नो नाम मे सुतः ॥३०॥
30. samānavratacāriṇyāṁ rukmiṇyāṁ yo'nvajāyata ,
sanatkumārastejasvī pradyumno nāma me sutaḥ.
30. samānavratacāriṇyām rukmiṇyām yaḥ anvajāyata
sanatkumāraḥ tejasvī pradyumnaḥ nāma me sutaḥ
30. yaḥ samānavratacāriṇyām rukmiṇyām anvajāyata,
(saḥ) me tejasvī sanatkumāraḥ nāma pradyumnaḥ sutaḥ (asti).
30. He who was born from Rukmiṇī, my wife who observes similar vows (vrata), is my brilliant and resplendent son (suta) named Pradyumna, (who is) Sanatkumāra.
तेनाप्येतन्महद्दिव्यं चक्रमप्रतिमं मम ।
न प्रार्थितमभून्मूढ यदिदं प्रार्थितं त्वया ॥३१॥
31. tenāpyetanmahaddivyaṁ cakramapratimaṁ mama ,
na prārthitamabhūnmūḍha yadidaṁ prārthitaṁ tvayā.
31. tena api etat mahat divyam cakram apratimam mama na
prārthitam abhūt mūḍha yadi idam prārthitam tvayā

31. O fool, even this great, divine, and unrivaled discus (cakra) of mine has never been requested by anyone before, yet this is what you have sought.
रामेणातिबलेनैतन्नोक्तपूर्वं कदाचन ।
न गदेन न साम्बेन यदिदं प्रार्थितं त्वया ॥३२॥
32. rāmeṇātibalenaitannoktapūrvaṁ kadācana ,
na gadena na sāmbena yadidaṁ prārthitaṁ tvayā.
32. rāmeṇa atibalena etat na uktapūrvam kadācana na
gadena na sāmbena yadi idam prārthitam tvayā
32. atibalena rāmeṇa etat kadācana na uktapūrvam; na gadena,

32. Even by the supremely powerful Rāma, this has never been requested before; nor by Gada, nor by Sāmba; yet this is what you have sought.
द्वारकावासिभिश्चान्यैर्वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथैः ।
नोक्तपूर्वमिदं जातु यदिदं प्रार्थितं त्वया ॥३३॥
33. dvārakāvāsibhiścānyairvṛṣṇyandhakamahārathaiḥ ,
noktapūrvamidaṁ jātu yadidaṁ prārthitaṁ tvayā.
33. dvārakāvāsibhiḥ ca anyaiḥ vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathaiḥ
na uktapūrvam idam jātu yadi idam prārthitam tvayā
33. dvārakāvāsibhiḥ ca anyaiḥ vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathaiḥ idam jātu na uktapūrvam; yadi idam tvayā prārthitam.
33. Nor by the residents of Dvārakā, nor by other great charioteers (mahārathas) of the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka clans, has this ever been requested, yet this is what you have sought.
भारताचार्यपुत्रः सन्मानितः सर्वयादवैः ।
चक्रेण रथिनां श्रेष्ठ किं नु तात युयुत्ससे ॥३४॥
34. bhāratācāryaputraḥ sanmānitaḥ sarvayādavaiḥ ,
cakreṇa rathināṁ śreṣṭha kiṁ nu tāta yuyutsase.

cakreṇa rathinām śreṣṭha kim nu tāta yuyutsase
34. (tvam) bhāratācāryaputraḥ,
sarvayādavaiḥ mānitaḥ san,

34. You are the son of the Bhārata teacher (Droṇa), honored by all the Yadavas. O best among charioteers, dear one, why indeed do you wish to fight (with my discus)?
एवमुक्तो मया द्रौणिर्मामिदं प्रत्युवाच ह ।
प्रयुज्य भवते पूजां योत्स्ये कृष्ण त्वयेत्युत ॥३५॥
35. evamukto mayā drauṇirmāmidaṁ pratyuvāca ha ,
prayujya bhavate pūjāṁ yotsye kṛṣṇa tvayetyuta.
35. evam uktaḥ mayā drauṇiḥ mām idam pratyuvāca ha
prayujya bhavate pūjām yotsye kṛṣṇa tvayā iti uta
35. mayā evam uktaḥ drauṇiḥ mām idam pratyuvāca ha,
kṛṣṇa,
bhavate pūjām prayujya tvayā yotsye iti uta
35. When I addressed him thus, Drauni replied to me, 'Having first offered you worship, Krishna, I will indeed fight with you.'
ततस्ते प्रार्थितं चक्रं देवदानवपूजितम् ।
अजेयः स्यामिति विभो सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥३६॥
36. tataste prārthitaṁ cakraṁ devadānavapūjitam ,
ajeyaḥ syāmiti vibho satyametadbravīmi te.
36. tataḥ te prārthitam cakram devadānavapūjitam
ajeyaḥ syām iti vibho satyam etat bravīmi te
36. tataḥ te prārthitam devadānavapūjitam cakram (labdham),

36. Then, regarding the discus, worshipped by gods and demons, which was prayed for by him (Drauni), he said to me, 'O Lord (Krishna), may I be unconquerable!' This truth I (Krishna) declare to you (Yudhisthira).
त्वत्तोऽहं दुर्लभं काममनवाप्यैव केशव ।
प्रतियास्यामि गोविन्द शिवेनाभिवदस्व माम् ॥३७॥
37. tvatto'haṁ durlabhaṁ kāmamanavāpyaiva keśava ,
pratiyāsyāmi govinda śivenābhivadasva mām.
37. tvattaḥ aham durlabham kāmam anavāpya eva keśava
pratiyāsyāmi govinda śivena abhivadasva mām

37. O Keśava, since I have not obtained this difficult desire from you, I will return, O Govinda. Bid me farewell with blessings.
एतत्सुनाभं वृष्णीनामृषभेण त्वया धृतम् ।
चक्रमप्रतिचक्रेण भुवि नान्योऽभिपद्यते ॥३८॥
38. etatsunābhaṁ vṛṣṇīnāmṛṣabheṇa tvayā dhṛtam ,
cakramapraticakreṇa bhuvi nānyo'bhipadyate.
38. etat sunābham vṛṣṇīnām ṛṣabheṇa tvayā dhṛtam
cakram apraticakreṇa bhuvi na anyaḥ abhipadyate
38. etat sunābham cakram,
vṛṣṇīnām ṛṣabheṇa apraticakreṇa tvayā dhṛtam (asti).
bhuvi anyaḥ na abhipadyate
38. This discus (Sudarśana), which has an excellent hub, is held by you, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis, who possesses an unparalleled discus. No one else on earth can obtain it.
एतावदुक्त्वा द्रौणिर्मां युग्यमश्वान्धनानि च ।
आदायोपययौ बालो रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥३९॥
39. etāvaduktvā drauṇirmāṁ yugyamaśvāndhanāni ca ,
ādāyopayayau bālo ratnāni vividhāni ca.
39. etāvat uktvā drauṇiḥ mām yugyam aśvān dhanāni
ca ādāya upayayau bālaḥ ratnāni vividhāni ca

39. Having said this much, Droṇi, acting rashly like a youth, took me, along with the chariots, horses, wealth, and various jewels, and departed.
स संरम्भी दुरात्मा च चपलः क्रूर एव च ।
वेद चास्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरस्तस्माद्रक्ष्यो वृकोदरः ॥४०॥
40. sa saṁrambhī durātmā ca capalaḥ krūra eva ca ,
veda cāstraṁ brahmaśirastasmādrakṣyo vṛkodaraḥ.

ca astram brahmaśiras tasmāt rakṣyaḥ vṛkodaraḥ

40. He is impetuous, evil-minded, fickle, and indeed cruel. Moreover, he knows the `brahmaśiras` weapon. Therefore, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) must be protected.
