नारद उवाच ।
सद्भिरारोपितः स्वर्गं पार्थिवैर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ।
अभ्यनुज्ञाय दौहित्रान्ययातिर्दिवमास्थितः ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
sadbhirāropitaḥ svargaṁ pārthivairbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ,
abhyanujñāya dauhitrānyayātirdivamāsthitaḥ.
1. nāradaḥ uvāca sadbhiḥ āropitaḥ svargaṃ pārthivaiḥ
bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ abhyanujñāya dauhitrān yayātiḥ divam āsthitaḥ
1. Nārada said: Caused to ascend to heaven by righteous kings (pārthiva) who gave abundant donations, Yayati, having assented to his grandsons, ascended to heaven (diva).
अभिवृष्टश्च वर्षेण नानापुष्पसुगन्धिना ।
परिष्वक्तश्च पुण्येन वायुना पुण्यगन्धिना ॥२॥
2. abhivṛṣṭaśca varṣeṇa nānāpuṣpasugandhinā ,
pariṣvaktaśca puṇyena vāyunā puṇyagandhinā.
2. abhivṛṣṭaḥ ca varṣeṇa nānāpuṣpasugandhinā
pariṣvaktaḥ ca puṇyena vāyunā puṇyagandhinā
2. And he was showered upon by a rain (varṣa) fragrant with various flowers, and embraced by a sacred wind (vāyu) having a sacred fragrance.
अचलं स्थानमारुह्य दौहित्रफलनिर्जितम् ।
कर्मभिः स्वैरुपचितो जज्वाल परया श्रिया ॥३॥
3. acalaṁ sthānamāruhya dauhitraphalanirjitam ,
karmabhiḥ svairupacito jajvāla parayā śriyā.
3. acalam sthānam āruhya dauhitraphalanirjitam
karmabhiḥ svaiḥ upacitaḥ jajvāla parayā śriyā
3. Having ascended to an immutable position, which was attained by the merit (karma) of his grandson, he shone brightly with supreme glory (śrī), augmented by his own actions (karma).
उपगीतोपनृत्तश्च गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणैः ।
प्रीत्या प्रतिगृहीतश्च स्वर्गे दुन्दुभिनिस्वनैः ॥४॥
4. upagītopanṛttaśca gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇaiḥ ,
prītyā pratigṛhītaśca svarge dundubhinisvanaiḥ.
4. upagītopanṛttaḥ ca gandharvāpsarasām gaṇaiḥ
prītyā pratigṛhītaḥ ca svarge dundubhinisvanaiḥ
4. And he was sung to and danced for by hosts of Gandharvas and Apsaras; moreover, he was joyfully welcomed in heaven with the sounds of drums.
अभिष्टुतश्च विविधैर्देवराजर्षिचारणैः ।
अर्चितश्चोत्तमार्घेण दैवतैरभिनन्दितः ॥५॥
5. abhiṣṭutaśca vividhairdevarājarṣicāraṇaiḥ ,
arcitaścottamārgheṇa daivatairabhinanditaḥ.
5. abhiṣṭutaḥ ca vividhaiḥ devarājarṣicāraṇaiḥ
arcitaḥ ca uttamārgheṇa daivataiḥ abhinanditaḥ
5. And he was eulogized by various gods, royal sages, and bards; and he was honored with supreme reverence (argha) by deities, who rejoiced at his arrival.
प्राप्तः स्वर्गफलं चैव तमुवाच पितामहः ।
निर्वृतं शान्तमनसं वचोभिस्तर्पयन्निव ॥६॥
6. prāptaḥ svargaphalaṁ caiva tamuvāca pitāmahaḥ ,
nirvṛtaṁ śāntamanasaṁ vacobhistarpayanniva.
6. prāptaḥ svargaphalam ca eva tam uvāca pitāmahaḥ
nirvṛtam śāntamanasam vacobhiḥ tarpayan iva
6. Having indeed attained the reward of heaven, Brahmā (pitāmaha) spoke to him, who was tranquil and contented, as if showering him with gratifying words.
चतुष्पादस्त्वया धर्मश्चितो लोक्येन कर्मणा ।
अक्षयस्तव लोकोऽयं कीर्तिश्चैवाक्षया दिवि ।
पुनस्तवाद्य राजर्षे सुकृतेनेह कर्मणा ॥७॥
7. catuṣpādastvayā dharmaścito lokyena karmaṇā ,
akṣayastava loko'yaṁ kīrtiścaivākṣayā divi ,
punastavādya rājarṣe sukṛteneha karmaṇā.
7. catuṣpādaḥ tvayā dharmaḥ citaḥ lokyena
karmaṇā akṣayaḥ tava lokaḥ ayam
kīrtiḥ ca eva akṣayā divi punaḥ tava
adya rājarṣe sukṛtena iha karmaṇā
7. O royal sage (rājarṣi), you upheld the complete natural law (dharma) through your worldly actions (karma). This realm of yours is imperishable, and your fame (kīrti) in heaven is also eternal. And again today, due to your meritorious actions (karma) here (in this world).
आवृतं तमसा चेतः सर्वेषां स्वर्गवासिनाम् ।
येन त्वां नाभिजानन्ति ततोऽज्ञात्वासि पातितः ॥८॥
8. āvṛtaṁ tamasā cetaḥ sarveṣāṁ svargavāsinām ,
yena tvāṁ nābhijānanti tato'jñātvāsi pātitaḥ.
8. āvṛtam tamasā cetaḥ sarveṣām svargavāsinām yena
tvām na abhijānanti tataḥ ajñātvā āsi pātitaḥ
8. The minds of all the inhabitants of heaven were enveloped by darkness, due to which they did not recognize you. Therefore, not knowing (your greatness), you were cast down.
प्रीत्यैव चासि दौहित्रैस्तारितस्त्वमिहागतः ।
स्थानं च प्रतिपन्नोऽसि कर्मणा स्वेन निर्जितम् ।
अचलं शाश्वतं पुण्यमुत्तमं ध्रुवमव्ययम् ॥९॥
9. prītyaiva cāsi dauhitraistāritastvamihāgataḥ ,
sthānaṁ ca pratipanno'si karmaṇā svena nirjitam ,
acalaṁ śāśvataṁ puṇyamuttamaṁ dhruvamavyayam.
9. prītyā eva ca āsi dauhitraiḥ tāritaḥ
tvam iha āgataḥ sthānam ca pratipannaḥ
asi karmaṇā svena nirjitam acalam
śāśvatam puṇyam uttamam dhruvam avyayam
9. And indeed, out of affection, you were delivered by your grandsons, and you have arrived here. You have attained an abode, won by your own actions (karma), an immovable, eternal, meritorious, supreme, constant, and imperishable (abode).
ययातिरुवाच ।
भगवन्संशयो मेऽस्ति कश्चित्तं छेत्तुमर्हसि ।
न ह्यन्यमहमर्हामि प्रष्टुं लोकपितामह ॥१०॥
10. yayātiruvāca ,
bhagavansaṁśayo me'sti kaścittaṁ chettumarhasi ,
na hyanyamahamarhāmi praṣṭuṁ lokapitāmaha.
10. yayātiḥ uvāca bhagavan saṃśayaḥ me asti kaścit tam chettum
arhasi na hi anyam aham arhāmi praṣṭum lokapitāmaha
10. Yayati said: 'O Revered One (bhagavan), I have a certain doubt; you ought to dispel it. For I am not able to ask anyone else, O Grandfather of the world (lokapitāmaha).'
बहुवर्षसहस्रान्तं प्रजापालनवर्धितम् ।
अनेकक्रतुदानौघैरर्जितं मे महत्फलम् ॥११॥
11. bahuvarṣasahasrāntaṁ prajāpālanavardhitam ,
anekakratudānaughairarjitaṁ me mahatphalam.
11. bahūvarṣasahasrāntam prajāpālanavardhitam
anekakratudānaughaiḥ arjitam me mahat phalam
11. me mahat phalam bahūvarṣasahasrāntam
prajāpālanavardhitam anekakratudānaughaiḥ arjitam
11. My great reward (phalam), which lasts for many thousands of years and is enhanced by the protection of subjects, has been acquired by me through numerous Vedic rituals (yajñas) and a multitude of charitable gifts (dāna).
कथं तदल्पकालेन क्षीणं येनास्मि पातितः ।
भगवन्वेत्थ लोकांश्च शाश्वतान्मम निर्जितान् ॥१२॥
12. kathaṁ tadalpakālena kṣīṇaṁ yenāsmi pātitaḥ ,
bhagavanvettha lokāṁśca śāśvatānmama nirjitān.
12. katham tat alpakālena kṣīṇam yena asmi pātitaḥ
bhagavan vettha lokān ca śāśvatān mama nirjitān
12. How has that [merit] been destroyed in such a short time, by which I have been made to fall? O Lord, do you know my eternal worlds (loka) that I conquered?
पितामह उवाच ।
बहुवर्षसहस्रान्तं प्रजापालनवर्धितम् ।
अनेकक्रतुदानौघैर्यत्त्वयोपार्जितं फलम् ॥१३॥
13. pitāmaha uvāca ,
bahuvarṣasahasrāntaṁ prajāpālanavardhitam ,
anekakratudānaughairyattvayopārjitaṁ phalam.
13. pitāmahaḥ uvāca bahūvarṣasahasrāntam prajāpālanavardhitam
anekakratudānaughaiḥ yat tvayā upārjitam phalam
13. pitāmahaḥ uvāca yat phalam tvayā upārjitam
bahūvarṣasahasrāntam prajāpālanavardhitam anekakratudānaughaiḥ
13. The Grandfather said: 'That reward (phalam) which has been acquired by you, lasting for many thousands of years and enhanced by the protection of subjects, through numerous Vedic rituals (yajñas) and a multitude of charitable gifts (dāna)...'
तदनेनैव दोषेण क्षीणं येनासि पातितः ।
अभिमानेन राजेन्द्र धिक्कृतः स्वर्गवासिभिः ॥१४॥
14. tadanenaiva doṣeṇa kṣīṇaṁ yenāsi pātitaḥ ,
abhimānena rājendra dhikkṛtaḥ svargavāsibhiḥ.
14. tat anena eva doṣeṇa kṣīṇam yena asi pātitaḥ
abhimānena rājendra dhikṛtaḥ svargavāsibhiḥ
14. That [merit] was destroyed by this very fault, due to which you have fallen. O King of kings (rājendra), you were disgraced by the inhabitants of heaven because of your ego (abhimāna).
नायं मानेन राजर्षे न बलेन न हिंसया ।
न शाठ्येन न मायाभिर्लोको भवति शाश्वतः ॥१५॥
15. nāyaṁ mānena rājarṣe na balena na hiṁsayā ,
na śāṭhyena na māyābhirloko bhavati śāśvataḥ.
15. na ayam mānena rājarṣe na balena na hiṃsayā na
śāṭhyena na māyābhiḥ lokaḥ bhavati śāśvataḥ
15. O royal sage, this enduring state is not achieved through pride, nor through strength, nor through violence, nor through deceit, nor through illusions (māyā).
नावमान्यास्त्वया राजन्नवरोत्कृष्टमध्यमाः ।
न हि मानप्रदग्धानां कश्चिदस्ति समः क्वचित् ॥१६॥
16. nāvamānyāstvayā rājannavarotkṛṣṭamadhyamāḥ ,
na hi mānapradagdhānāṁ kaścidasti samaḥ kvacit.
16. na avamānyāḥ tvayā rājan avarakṛṣṭamadhyamāḥ na
hi mānapradagdhānām kaścit asti samaḥ kvacit
16. O King, you should not disrespect those who are inferior, superior, or middling. For truly, there is no one anywhere who can stand equal to those consumed by pride.
पतनारोहणमिदं कथयिष्यन्ति ये नराः ।
विषमाण्यपि ते प्राप्तास्तरिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥१७॥
17. patanārohaṇamidaṁ kathayiṣyanti ye narāḥ ,
viṣamāṇyapi te prāptāstariṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ.
17. patanārohaṇam idam kathayiṣyanti ye narāḥ
viṣamāṇi api te prāptāḥ tariṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
17. Those people who will narrate this account of rise and fall, even if they encounter difficulties, will undoubtedly overcome them.
नारद उवाच ।
एष दोषोऽभिमानेन पुरा प्राप्तो ययातिना ।
निर्बन्धतश्चातिमात्रं गालवेन महीपते ॥१८॥
18. nārada uvāca ,
eṣa doṣo'bhimānena purā prāpto yayātinā ,
nirbandhataścātimātraṁ gālavena mahīpate.
18. nāradaḥ uvāca eṣaḥ doṣaḥ abhimānena purā prāptaḥ
yayātinā nirbandhataḥ ca atimātram gālavenā mahīpate
18. Nārada said: 'This fault was incurred by King Yayāti in the past due to his pride (abhimāna), and it was excessively caused by Gālava's insistence, O King.'
श्रोतव्यं हितकामानां सुहृदां भूतिमिच्छताम् ।
न कर्तव्यो हि निर्बन्धो निर्बन्धो हि क्षयोदयः ॥१९॥
19. śrotavyaṁ hitakāmānāṁ suhṛdāṁ bhūtimicchatām ,
na kartavyo hi nirbandho nirbandho hi kṣayodayaḥ.
19. śrotavyam hitakāmānām suhṛdām bhūtimicchatām na
kartavyaḥ hi nirbandhaḥ nirbandhaḥ hi kṣayodayaḥ
19. The words of well-wishers who desire one's welfare and prosperity should be listened to. Insistence should certainly not be made, for insistence indeed brings about decline and rise, causing instability.
तस्मात्त्वमपि गान्धारे मानं क्रोधं च वर्जय ।
संधत्स्व पाण्डवैर्वीर संरम्भं त्यज पार्थिव ॥२०॥
20. tasmāttvamapi gāndhāre mānaṁ krodhaṁ ca varjaya ,
saṁdhatsva pāṇḍavairvīra saṁrambhaṁ tyaja pārthiva.
20. tasmāt tvam api gāndhāre mānam krodham ca varjaya
sandhatsva pāṇḍavaiḥ vīra saṃrambham tyaja pārthiva
20. Therefore, O Gāndhārī, you too should abandon pride and anger. O hero, O king, reconcile with the Pāṇḍavas and give up your hostile intent.
ददाति यत्पार्थिव यत्करोति यद्वा तपस्तप्यति यज्जुहोति ।
न तस्य नाशोऽस्ति न चापकर्षो नान्यस्तदश्नाति स एव कर्ता ॥२१॥
21. dadāti yatpārthiva yatkaroti; yadvā tapastapyati yajjuhoti ,
na tasya nāśo'sti na cāpakarṣo; nānyastadaśnāti sa eva kartā.
21. dadāti yat pārthiva yat karoti yat
vā tapaḥ tapyati yat juhoti na
tasya nāśaḥ asti na ca apakarṣaḥ
na anyaḥ tat aśnāti saḥ eva kartā
21. Whatever a person gives, O king, whatever he does, or whatever austerity (tapas) he performs, whatever he offers (in a yajña), there is no destruction of that (action's fruit), nor is there any diminution. No one else enjoys that; he himself is the doer.
इदं महाख्यानमनुत्तमं मतं बहुश्रुतानां गतरोषरागिणाम् ।
समीक्ष्य लोके बहुधा प्रधाविता त्रिवर्गदृष्टिः पृथिवीमुपाश्नुते ॥२२॥
22. idaṁ mahākhyānamanuttamaṁ mataṁ; bahuśrutānāṁ gataroṣarāgiṇām ,
samīkṣya loke bahudhā pradhāvitā; trivargadṛṣṭiḥ pṛthivīmupāśnute.
22. idam mahākhyānam anuttamam matam
bahuśrutānām gateroṣarāgiṇām
samīkṣya loke bahudhā pradhāvitā
trivargadṛṣṭiḥ pṛthivīm upāśnute
22. This great and unequalled narrative is esteemed by the highly learned, who are free from attachment and anger. Having thoroughly examined it, one realizes that the comprehensive understanding of the three aims of life (dharma, artha, and kāma), which has spread widely throughout the world in various ways, pervades the entire earth.
