युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
उक्तं वै गोप्रदानं ते नाचिकेतमृषिं प्रति ।
माहात्म्यमपि चैवोक्तमुद्देशेन गवां प्रभो ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
uktaṁ vai gopradānaṁ te nāciketamṛṣiṁ prati ,
māhātmyamapi caivoktamuddeśena gavāṁ prabho.

1. Yudhishthira said: 'O Lord, indeed, the cow-donation (gopradāna) has been described to you, in relation to the sage Nachiketa. And its greatness (māhātmya) has also been recounted, concerning the cows.'
नृगेण च यथा दुःखमनुभूतं महात्मना ।
एकापराधादज्ञानात्पितामह महामते ॥२॥
2. nṛgeṇa ca yathā duḥkhamanubhūtaṁ mahātmanā ,
ekāparādhādajñānātpitāmaha mahāmate.
2. nṛgeṇa ca yathā duḥkham anubhūtam mahātmanā
ekāparādhāt ajñānāt pitāmaha mahāmate

ca yathā mahātmanā nṛgeṇa duḥkham ekāparādhāt ajñānāt anubhūtam
2. O great-minded grandsire, just as the noble Nṛga experienced suffering due to a single offense committed unknowingly...
द्वारवत्यां यथा चासौ निविशन्त्यां समुद्धृतः ।
मोक्षहेतुरभूत्कृष्णस्तदप्यवधृतं मया ॥३॥
3. dvāravatyāṁ yathā cāsau niviśantyāṁ samuddhṛtaḥ ,
mokṣaheturabhūtkṛṣṇastadapyavadhṛtaṁ mayā.
3. dvāravatyām yathā ca asau niviśantyām samuddhṛtaḥ
mokṣahetuḥ abhūt kṛṣṇaḥ tat api avadhṛtam mayā
3. ca yathā asau niviśantyām dvāravatyām samuddhṛtaḥ,
kṛṣṇaḥ mokṣahetuḥ abhūt; tat api mayā avadhṛtam
3. And just as he (Kṛṣṇa) was rescued from Dvārakā while it was sinking, Kṛṣṇa became the cause of liberation (mokṣa); that too has been ascertained by me.
किं त्वस्ति मम संदेहो गवां लोकं प्रति प्रभो ।
तत्त्वतः श्रोतुमिच्छामि गोदा यत्र विशन्त्युत ॥४॥
4. kiṁ tvasti mama saṁdeho gavāṁ lokaṁ prati prabho ,
tattvataḥ śrotumicchāmi godā yatra viśantyuta.
4. kim tu asti mama sandehaḥ gavām lokam prati prabho
tattvataḥ śrotum icchāmi godāḥ yatra viśanti uta
4. kim tu prabho,
mama sandehaḥ asti gavām lokam prati.
tattvataḥ icchāmi śrotum yatra godāḥ uta viśanti
4. But, O lord, I have a doubt regarding the world of cows. I truly wish to hear precisely where those who perform the act of giving (dāna) cows go.
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
यथापृच्छत्पद्मयोनिमेतदेव शतक्रतुः ॥५॥
5. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
yathāpṛcchatpadmayonimetadeva śatakratuḥ.
5. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam yathā apṛcchat padmayonim etat eva śatakratuḥ
5. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca: atra api imam purātanam itihāsam udāharanti,
yathā śatakratuḥ etat eva padmayonim apṛcchat
5. Bhīṣma said: Here, they also relate this ancient narrative, just as the one with a hundred Vedic rituals (yajñas), Indra, asked this very question of the lotus-born Brahmā.
शक्र उवाच ।
स्वर्लोकवासिनां लक्ष्मीमभिभूय स्वया त्विषा ।
गोलोकवासिनः पश्ये व्रजतः संशयोऽत्र मे ॥६॥
6. śakra uvāca ,
svarlokavāsināṁ lakṣmīmabhibhūya svayā tviṣā ,
golokavāsinaḥ paśye vrajataḥ saṁśayo'tra me.
6. śakraḥ uvāca svarlokavāsinām lakṣmīm abhibhūya svayā
tviṣā golokavāsinaḥ paśye vrajataḥ saṁśayaḥ atra me
6. śakraḥ uvāca.
me atra saṁśayaḥ (asti).
(yat) svayā tviṣā svarlokavāsinām lakṣmīm abhibhūya vrajataḥ golokavāsinaḥ paśye.
6. Indra said: I behold those dwelling in Goloka going about, surpassing the splendor of the residents of Svargaloka with their own radiance. A doubt arises in me concerning this.
कीदृशा भगवँल्लोका गवां तद्ब्रूहि मेऽनघ ।
यानावसन्ति दातार एतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥७॥
7. kīdṛśā bhagavaँllokā gavāṁ tadbrūhi me'nagha ,
yānāvasanti dātāra etadicchāmi veditum.
7. kīdṛśāḥ bhagavan lokāḥ gavām tat brūhi me anagha
yān āvasanti dātāraḥ etat icchāmi veditum
7. bhagavan anagha me tat brūhi kīdṛśāḥ gavām lokāḥ yān dātāraḥ āvasanti.
etat veditum icchāmi.
7. O revered one (bhagavat), O sinless one (anagha), tell me what kind of realms belong to the cows, and where the donors of cows reside. I desire to know this.
कीदृशाः किंफलाः कः स्वित्परमस्तत्र वै गुणः ।
कथं च पुरुषास्तत्र गच्छन्ति विगतज्वराः ॥८॥
8. kīdṛśāḥ kiṁphalāḥ kaḥ svitparamastatra vai guṇaḥ ,
kathaṁ ca puruṣāstatra gacchanti vigatajvarāḥ.
8. kīdṛśāḥ kiṁphalāḥ kaḥ svit paramaḥ tatra vai guṇaḥ
katham ca puruṣāḥ tatra gacchanti vigatajvarāḥ
8. kīdṛśāḥ kiṁphalāḥ (santi)? tatra vai kaḥ svit paramaḥ guṇaḥ
(asti)? ca katham puruṣāḥ vigatajvarāḥ tatra gacchanti?
8. What is their nature? What results do they yield? What, indeed, is the supreme quality there? And how do individuals reach that place, free from all anxiety?
कियत्कालं प्रदानस्य दाता च फलमश्नुते ।
कथं बहुविधं दानं स्यादल्पमपि वा कथम् ॥९॥
9. kiyatkālaṁ pradānasya dātā ca phalamaśnute ,
kathaṁ bahuvidhaṁ dānaṁ syādalpamapi vā katham.
9. kiyat kālam pradānasya dātā ca phalam aśnute
katham bahuvidham dānam syāt alpam api vā katham
9. dātā pradānasya phalam kiyat kālam ca aśnute? katham
bahuvidham dānam syāt? vā alpam api katham (syāt)?
9. For how long does the donor enjoy the result of a gift? And how can a varied donation be effective, or even a small one, how?
बह्वीनां कीदृशं दानमल्पानां वापि कीदृशम् ।
अदत्त्वा गोप्रदाः सन्ति केन वा तच्च शंस मे ॥१०॥
10. bahvīnāṁ kīdṛśaṁ dānamalpānāṁ vāpi kīdṛśam ,
adattvā gopradāḥ santi kena vā tacca śaṁsa me.
10. bahvīnām kīdṛśam dānam alpānām vā api kīdṛśam
adattvā gopradāḥ santi kena vā tat ca śaṃsa me
10. me śaṃsa bahvīnām dānam kīdṛśam alpānām vā api kīdṛśam.
adattvā gopradāḥ kena vā santi? tat ca.
10. What kind of offering is it when many cows are given, and what kind when few are given? How can some people be regarded as givers of cows without having actually given any? Please explain that to me.
कथं च बहुदाता स्यादल्पदात्रा समः प्रभो ।
अल्पप्रदाता बहुदः कथं च स्यादिहेश्वर ॥११॥
11. kathaṁ ca bahudātā syādalpadātrā samaḥ prabho ,
alpapradātā bahudaḥ kathaṁ ca syādiheśvara.
11. katham ca bahudātā syāt alpaprādātrā samaḥ prabho
alpaprādātā bahudaḥ katham ca syāt iha īśvara
11. Prabho,
katham ca bahudātā alpaprādātrā samaḥ syāt? Īśvara,
katham ca iha alpaprādātā bahudaḥ syāt?
11. And how, O Lord, can a giver of many be equal to one who gives few? And how, O Master, can a giver of few become equal to a giver of many in this matter?
कीदृशी दक्षिणा चैव गोप्रदाने विशिष्यते ।
एतत्तथ्येन भगवन्मम शंसितुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. kīdṛśī dakṣiṇā caiva gopradāne viśiṣyate ,
etattathyena bhagavanmama śaṁsitumarhasi.
12. kīdṛśī dakṣiṇā ca eva gopradāne viśiṣyate
etat tathyena bhagavan mama śaṃsitum arhasi
12. Bhagavan,
gopradāne kīdṛśī dakṣiṇā ca eva viśiṣyate? etat tathyena mama śaṃsitum arhasi.
12. And what kind of offering (dakṣiṇā) is especially distinguished in the context of giving cows? O revered one, you should truthfully explain this to me.
