श्रुतं मे भवतो वाक्यमन्नदानस्य यो विधिः ।
नक्षत्रयोगस्येदानीं दानकल्पं ब्रवीहि मे ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
śrutaṁ me bhavato vākyamannadānasya yo vidhiḥ ,
nakṣatrayogasyedānīṁ dānakalpaṁ bravīhi me.

1. Yudhishthira said: 'I have heard your discourse concerning the method for the giving of food (dāna). Now, please tell me the rule for giving (dāna) in relation to the conjunction of constellations.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
देवक्याश्चैव संवादं देवर्षेर्नारदस्य च ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
devakyāścaiva saṁvādaṁ devarṣernāradasya ca.

purātanam devakyāḥ ca eva saṃvādam devarṣeḥ nāradasya ca

2. Bhishma said: In this context, they also relate this ancient narrative, the conversation between Devaki and the divine sage Narada.
द्वारकामनुसंप्राप्तं नारदं देवदर्शनम् ।
पप्रच्छैनं ततः प्रश्नं देवकी धर्मदर्शिनी ॥३॥
3. dvārakāmanusaṁprāptaṁ nāradaṁ devadarśanam ,
papracchainaṁ tataḥ praśnaṁ devakī dharmadarśinī.

3. Devaki, who discerned (dharma) natural law, then asked a question of Narada, who had arrived at Dvaraka and was accustomed to seeing the gods.
तस्याः संपृच्छमानाया देवर्षिर्नारदस्तदा ।
आचष्ट विधिवत्सर्वं यत्तच्छृणु विशां पते ॥४॥
4. tasyāḥ saṁpṛcchamānāyā devarṣirnāradastadā ,
ācaṣṭa vidhivatsarvaṁ yattacchṛṇu viśāṁ pate.
4. tasyāḥ saṃpṛcchamānāyāḥ devarṣiḥ nāradaḥ tadā
ācaṣṭa vidhivat sarvam yat tat śṛṇu viśām pate
4. viśām pate yat tat devarṣiḥ nāradaḥ tadā tasyāḥ

4. While she was making her inquiry, the divine sage Narada then duly explained everything. Hear that, O lord of men!
नारद उवाच ।
कृत्तिकासु महाभागे पायसेन ससर्पिषा ।
संतर्प्य ब्राह्मणान्साधूँल्लोकानाप्नोत्यनुत्तमान् ॥५॥
5. nārada uvāca ,
kṛttikāsu mahābhāge pāyasena sasarpiṣā ,
saṁtarpya brāhmaṇānsādhūँllokānāpnotyanuttamān.

saṃtarpya brāhmaṇān sādhūn lokān āpnoti anuttamān
5. nārada uvāca.
mahābhāge,
kṛttikāsu pāyasena sasarpiṣā sādhūn brāhmaṇān saṃtarpya anuttamān lokān āpnoti.
5. Narada said: O highly fortunate one, by satisfying virtuous brahmins with ghee-laden rice pudding during the Krittika lunar mansion, one attains the most excellent worlds.
रोहिण्यां प्रथितैर्मांसैर्माषैरन्नेन सर्पिषा ।
पयोऽनुपानं दातव्यमानृण्यार्थं द्विजातये ॥६॥
6. rohiṇyāṁ prathitairmāṁsairmāṣairannena sarpiṣā ,
payo'nupānaṁ dātavyamānṛṇyārthaṁ dvijātaye.
6. rohiṇyām prathitaiḥ māṃsaiḥ māṣaiḥ annena sarpiṣā
payaḥ anupānam dātavyam ānṛṇyārtham dvijātaye

6. During the Rohiṇī (nakṣatra), one should give well-known meats, lentils, cooked rice, and ghee, along with milk as an after-drink, to a twice-born (dvija) for the purpose of freeing oneself from debts.
दोग्ध्रीं दत्त्वा सवत्सां तु नक्षत्रे सोमदैवते ।
गच्छन्ति मानुषाल्लोकात्स्वर्गलोकमनुत्तमम् ॥७॥
7. dogdhrīṁ dattvā savatsāṁ tu nakṣatre somadaivate ,
gacchanti mānuṣāllokātsvargalokamanuttamam.
7. dogdhrīm dattvā savatsām tu nakṣatre somadaivate
gacchanti mānuṣāt lokāt svargalokam anuttamam
7. somadaivate nakṣatre savatsām dogdhrīm dattvā tu

7. Indeed, by giving a milking cow with its calf during the constellation ruled by Soma (Mrigaśīrṣa), people go from the human world to the supreme celestial world.
आर्द्रायां कृसरं दत्त्वा तैलमिश्रमुपोषितः ।
नरस्तरति दुर्गाणि क्षुरधारांश्च पर्वतान् ॥८॥
8. ārdrāyāṁ kṛsaraṁ dattvā tailamiśramupoṣitaḥ ,
narastarati durgāṇi kṣuradhārāṁśca parvatān.
8. ārdrāyām kṛsaram dattvā tailamiśram upoṣitaḥ
naraḥ tarati durgāṇi kṣuradhārān ca parvatān
8. ārdrāyām tailamiśram kṛsaram dattvā upoṣitaḥ

8. Having fasted and given kṛsara (a dish of rice and sesame/beans) mixed with oil during the Ārdrā (nakṣatra), a man overcomes difficulties and mountains with razor-sharp edges.
अपूपान्पुनर्वसौ दत्त्वा तथैवान्नानि शोभने ।
यशस्वी रूपसंपन्नो बह्वन्ने जायते कुले ॥९॥
9. apūpānpunarvasau dattvā tathaivānnāni śobhane ,
yaśasvī rūpasaṁpanno bahvanne jāyate kule.
9. apūpān punarvasau dattvā tathaiva annāni śobhane
yaśasvī rūpasaṃpannaḥ bahvanne jāyate kule
9. śobhane punarvasau apūpān tathaiva annāni dattvā
yaśasvī rūpasaṃpannaḥ bahvanne kule jāyate
9. O beautiful lady, one who offers cakes and various other foods during the Punarvasu (nakṣatra) is born into a wealthy family, becoming renowned and endowed with beauty.
पुष्ये तु कनकं दत्त्वा कृतं चाकृतमेव च ।
अनालोकेषु लोकेषु सोमवत्स विराजते ॥१०॥
10. puṣye tu kanakaṁ dattvā kṛtaṁ cākṛtameva ca ,
anālokeṣu lokeṣu somavatsa virājate.
10. puṣye tu kanakaṃ dattvā kṛtaṃ ca akṛtam
eva ca anālokeṣu lokeṣu somavat sa virājate
10. puṣye tu kanakaṃ dattvā kṛtaṃ ca akṛtam eva
ca saḥ anālokeṣu lokeṣu somavat virājate
10. Indeed, one who gives gold during the Puṣya constellation, for both completed and uncompleted actions, shines like the moon in the unseen realms.
आश्लेषायां तु यो रूप्यमृषभं वा प्रयच्छति ।
स सर्वभयनिर्मुक्तः शात्रवानधितिष्ठति ॥११॥
11. āśleṣāyāṁ tu yo rūpyamṛṣabhaṁ vā prayacchati ,
sa sarvabhayanirmuktaḥ śātravānadhitiṣṭhati.
11. āśleṣāyāṃ tu yaḥ rūpyam ṛṣabhaṃ vā prayacchati
saḥ sarvabhayanirmuktaḥ śātravān adhitiṣṭhati
11. tu yaḥ āśleṣāyāṃ rūpyam vā ṛṣabhaṃ prayacchati
saḥ sarvabhayanirmuktaḥ śātravān adhitiṣṭhati
11. Indeed, whoever gives silver or a bull during the Āśleṣā constellation, he becomes free from all fear and conquers his adversaries.
मघासु तिलपूर्णानि वर्धमानानि मानवः ।
प्रदाय पुत्रपशुमानिह प्रेत्य च मोदते ॥१२॥
12. maghāsu tilapūrṇāni vardhamānāni mānavaḥ ,
pradāya putrapaśumāniha pretya ca modate.
12. maghāsu tilapūrṇāni vardhamānāni mānavaḥ
pradāya putrapaśumān iha pretya ca modate
12. mānavaḥ maghāsu tilapūrṇāni vardhamānāni
pradāya putrapaśumān iha ca pretya modate
12. A person who offers auspicious jars (vardhamānāni) filled with sesame seeds during the Maghā constellation, becomes endowed with sons and cattle, and rejoices both in this world and after passing on.
फल्गुनीपूर्वसमये ब्राह्मणानामुपोषितः ।
भक्षान्फाणितसंयुक्तान्दत्त्वा सौभाग्यमृच्छति ॥१३॥
13. phalgunīpūrvasamaye brāhmaṇānāmupoṣitaḥ ,
bhakṣānphāṇitasaṁyuktāndattvā saubhāgyamṛcchati.
13. phalgunīpūrvasamaye brāhmaṇānām upoṣitaḥ bhakṣān
phāṇitasaṃyuktān dattvā saubhāgyam ṛcchati
13. upoṣitaḥ phalgunīpūrvasamaye brāhmaṇānām
phāṇitasaṃyuktān bhakṣān dattvā saubhāgyam ṛcchati
13. A person who, having fasted, gives foods mixed with treacle to Brahmins during the Pūrva Phalguni constellation, attains good fortune.
घृतक्षीरसमायुक्तं विधिवत्षष्टिकौदनम् ।
उत्तराविषये दत्त्वा स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥१४॥
14. ghṛtakṣīrasamāyuktaṁ vidhivatṣaṣṭikaudanam ,
uttarāviṣaye dattvā svargaloke mahīyate.
14. ghṛtakṣīrasamāyuktam vidhivat ṣaṣṭika odanam
uttarāviṣaye dattvā svargaloke mahīyate
14. uttarāviṣaye ghṛtakṣīrasamāyuktam ṣaṣṭika
odanam vidhivat dattvā svargaloke mahīyate
14. One who, in the northern region, gives sixty-day-rice mixed with ghee and milk, according to proper rituals, is honored in the heavenly realm.
यद्यत्प्रदीयते दानमुत्तराविषये नरैः ।
महाफलमनन्तं च भवतीति विनिश्चयः ॥१५॥
15. yadyatpradīyate dānamuttarāviṣaye naraiḥ ,
mahāphalamanantaṁ ca bhavatīti viniścayaḥ.
15. yat yat pradīyate dānam uttarāviṣaye naraiḥ
mahāphalam anantam ca bhavati iti viniścayaḥ
15. naraiḥ uttarāviṣaye yat yat dānam pradīyate,
(tat) mahāphalam anantam ca bhavati iti viniścayaḥ
15. Whatever gift (dāna) is offered by people in the northern region, that yields immense and endless results; this is a definite conclusion.
हस्ते हस्तिरथं दत्त्वा चतुर्युक्तमुपोषितः ।
प्राप्नोति परमाँल्लोकान्पुण्यकामसमन्वितान् ॥१६॥
16. haste hastirathaṁ dattvā caturyuktamupoṣitaḥ ,
prāpnoti paramāँllokānpuṇyakāmasamanvitān.
16. haste hastiratham dattvā caturyuktam upoṣitaḥ
prāpnoti paramān lokān puṇyakāmasamanvitān
16. upoṣitaḥ (naraḥ) haste caturyuktam hastiratham
dattvā puṇyakāmasamanvitān paramān lokān prāpnoti
16. One who has fasted and gives an elephant-chariot, yoked with four (horses), directly, attains the supreme realms filled with all desired merits.
चित्रायामृषभं दत्त्वा पुण्यान्गन्धांश्च भारत ।
चरत्यप्सरसां लोके रमते नन्दने तथा ॥१७॥
17. citrāyāmṛṣabhaṁ dattvā puṇyāngandhāṁśca bhārata ,
caratyapsarasāṁ loke ramate nandane tathā.
17. citrāyām ṛṣabham dattvā puṇyān gandhān ca bhārata
carati apsarasām loke ramate nandane tathā
17. bhārata! citrāyām ṛṣabham puṇyān gandhān ca dattvā,
(saḥ) apsarasām loke carati,
tathā nandane ramate
17. O Bhārata, having offered a bull during the Citrā nakṣatra and auspicious fragrances, one moves freely in the realm of the celestial nymphs (apsaras) and likewise delights in Nandana (Indra's garden).
स्वातावथ धनं दत्त्वा यदिष्टतममात्मनः ।
प्राप्नोति लोकान्स शुभानिह चैव महद्यशः ॥१८॥
18. svātāvatha dhanaṁ dattvā yadiṣṭatamamātmanaḥ ,
prāpnoti lokānsa śubhāniha caiva mahadyaśaḥ.
18. svātāu atha dhanam dattvā yat iṣṭatamam ātmanaḥ
prāpnoti lokān sa śubhān iha ca eva mahat yaśaḥ
18. atha svātāu ātmanaḥ yat iṣṭatamam dhanam dattvā
sa iha ca eva śubhān lokān mahat yaśaḥ prāpnoti
18. One who gives wealth, especially that which is most desired by oneself, during the Svati lunar mansion, obtains auspicious worlds and indeed great fame in this world.
विशाखायामनड्वाहं धेनुं दत्त्वा च दुग्धदाम् ।
सप्रासङ्गं च शकटं सधान्यं वस्त्रसंयुतम् ॥१९॥
19. viśākhāyāmanaḍvāhaṁ dhenuṁ dattvā ca dugdhadām ,
saprāsaṅgaṁ ca śakaṭaṁ sadhānyaṁ vastrasaṁyutam.
19. viśākhāyām anaḍvāham dhenum dattvā ca dugdhadām
saprāsaṅgam ca śakaṭam sadhānyam vastrasaṃyutam
19. viśākhāyām anaḍvāham dugdhadām dhenum ca saprāsaṅgam
sadhānyam vastrasaṃyutam śakaṭam ca dattvā
19. (During the Viśākhā lunar mansion, one should give) a bull and a milk-giving cow, along with a cart equipped with a goad, grain, and clothes.
पितॄन्देवांश्च प्रीणाति प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमश्नुते ।
न च दुर्गाण्यवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥२०॥
20. pitṝndevāṁśca prīṇāti pretya cānantyamaśnute ,
na ca durgāṇyavāpnoti svargalokaṁ ca gacchati.
20. pitṝn devān ca prīṇāti pretya ca ānantyam aśnute
na ca durgāṇi avāpnoti svargalokam ca gacchati
20. pitṝn ca devān prīṇāti pretya ca ānantyam aśnute
ca durgāṇi na avāpnoti ca svargalokam gacchati
20. (By doing so, one) pleases the ancestors and the gods, and after death, attains eternity. One does not encounter difficulties and goes to the heavenly world.
दत्त्वा यथोक्तं विप्रेभ्यो वृत्तिमिष्टां स विन्दति ।
नरकादींश्च संक्लेशान्नाप्नोतीति विनिश्चयः ॥२१॥
21. dattvā yathoktaṁ viprebhyo vṛttimiṣṭāṁ sa vindati ,
narakādīṁśca saṁkleśānnāpnotīti viniścayaḥ.
21. dattvā yathoktam viprebhyaḥ vṛttim iṣṭām sa vindati
narakādīn ca saṃkleśān na āpnoti iti viniścayaḥ
21. yathoktam viprebhyaḥ iṣṭām vṛttim dattvā sa vindati
narakādīn ca saṃkleśān na āpnoti iti viniścayaḥ
21. By giving as prescribed to the Brahmins, one obtains a desired livelihood. One does not experience hell (naraka) and other afflictions; this is a certainty.
अनुराधासु प्रावारं वस्त्रान्तरमुपोषितः ।
दत्त्वा युगशतं चापि नरः स्वर्गे महीयते ॥२२॥
22. anurādhāsu prāvāraṁ vastrāntaramupoṣitaḥ ,
dattvā yugaśataṁ cāpi naraḥ svarge mahīyate.
22. anurādhāsu prāvāram vastra-antaram upoṣitaḥ |
dattvā yuga-śatam ca api naraḥ svarge mahīyate
22. A man who, having fasted, gives an outer garment and an inner garment during the Anurādhā nakshatra, is honored in heaven for a hundred ages.
कालशाकं तु विप्रेभ्यो दत्त्वा मर्त्यः समूलकम् ।
ज्येष्ठायामृद्धिमिष्टां वै गतिमिष्टां च विन्दति ॥२३॥
23. kālaśākaṁ tu viprebhyo dattvā martyaḥ samūlakam ,
jyeṣṭhāyāmṛddhimiṣṭāṁ vai gatimiṣṭāṁ ca vindati.
23. kāla-śākam tu viprebhyaḥ dattvā martyaḥ sa-mūlakam
| jyeṣṭhāyām ṛddhim iṣṭām vai gatim iṣṭām ca vindati
23. Indeed, a mortal who gives seasonal vegetables along with their roots to Brahmins during the Jyeṣṭhā nakshatra, obtains desired prosperity and a desired destination.
मूले मूलफलं दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यः समाहितः ।
पितॄन्प्रीणयते चापि गतिमिष्टां च गच्छति ॥२४॥
24. mūle mūlaphalaṁ dattvā brāhmaṇebhyaḥ samāhitaḥ ,
pitṝnprīṇayate cāpi gatimiṣṭāṁ ca gacchati.
24. mūle mūla-phalam dattvā brāhmaṇebhyaḥ samāhitaḥ
| pitṝn prīṇayate ca api gatim iṣṭām ca gacchati
24. A man, composed and attentive, who gives root vegetables to Brahmins during the Mūla nakshatra, also pleases his ancestors (pitṛs) and attains a desired destination.
अथ पूर्वास्वषाढासु दधिपात्राण्युपोषितः ।
कुलवृत्तोपसंपन्ने ब्राह्मणे वेदपारगे ।
प्रदाय जायते प्रेत्य कुले सुबहुगोकुले ॥२५॥
25. atha pūrvāsvaṣāḍhāsu dadhipātrāṇyupoṣitaḥ ,
kulavṛttopasaṁpanne brāhmaṇe vedapārage ,
pradāya jāyate pretya kule subahugokule.
25. atha pūrvāsu-aṣāḍhāsu dadhi-pātrāṇi
upoṣitaḥ | kula-vṛtta-upa-saṃpanne
brāhmaṇe veda-pārage | pradāya
jāyate pretya kule su-bahu-go-kule
25. Now, a man who, having fasted during the Pūrva-aṣāḍhā nakshatra, gives pots of curd to a Brahmin endowed with noble family conduct and master of the Vedas, is reborn in the next world into a family rich in many cows.
उदमन्थं ससर्पिष्कं प्रभूतमधुफाणितम् ।
दत्त्वोत्तरास्वषाढासु सर्वकामानवाप्नुयात् ॥२६॥
26. udamanthaṁ sasarpiṣkaṁ prabhūtamadhuphāṇitam ,
dattvottarāsvaṣāḍhāsu sarvakāmānavāpnuyāt.
26. udamanthaṃ sasarpiṣkaṃ prabhūtamadhuphāṇitam
dattvā uttarāsu aṣāḍhāsu sarvakāmān avāpnuyāt
26. uttarāsu aṣāḍhāsu sasarpiṣkaṃ prabhūtamadhuphāṇitam
udamanthaṃ dattvā sarvakāmān avāpnuyāt
26. One who gives a churned drink mixed with ghee, abundant honey, and treacle during the Uttarāṣāḍhā constellation obtains all their desires.
दुग्धं त्वभिजिते योगे दत्त्वा मधुघृताप्लुतम् ।
धर्मनित्यो मनीषिभ्यः स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥२७॥
27. dugdhaṁ tvabhijite yoge dattvā madhughṛtāplutam ,
dharmanityo manīṣibhyaḥ svargaloke mahīyate.
27. dugdhaṃ tu abhijite yoge dattvā madhughṛtāplutam
dharmanityaḥ manīṣibhyaḥ svargaloke mahīyate
27. dharmanityaḥ tu abhijite yoge madhughṛtāplutam
dugdhaṃ manīṣibhyaḥ dattvā svargaloke mahīyate
27. Indeed, one who is constant in righteousness (dharma) and, having given milk mixed with honey and ghee to the wise ones during the Abhijit conjunction (yoga), is honored in the celestial world (svargaloka).
श्रवणे कम्बलं दत्त्वा वस्त्रान्तरितमेव च ।
श्वेतेन याति यानेन सर्वलोकानसंवृतान् ॥२८॥
28. śravaṇe kambalaṁ dattvā vastrāntaritameva ca ,
śvetena yāti yānena sarvalokānasaṁvṛtān.
28. śravaṇe kambalaṃ dattvā vastrāntaritam eva
ca śvetena yāti yānena sarvalokān asaṃvṛtān
28. śravaṇe vastrāntaritam eva ca kambalaṃ dattvā
śvetena yānena asaṃvṛtān sarvalokān yāti
28. Having given a blanket, and indeed one concealed within a cloth, during the Śravaṇa constellation, one goes by a white vehicle to all unobstructed worlds.
गोप्रयुक्तं धनिष्ठासु यानं दत्त्वा समाहितः ।
वस्त्ररश्मिधरं सद्यः प्रेत्य राज्यं प्रपद्यते ॥२९॥
29. goprayuktaṁ dhaniṣṭhāsu yānaṁ dattvā samāhitaḥ ,
vastraraśmidharaṁ sadyaḥ pretya rājyaṁ prapadyate.
29. goprayuktaṃ dhaniṣṭhāsu yānaṃ dattvā samāhitaḥ
vastraraśmidharaṃ sadyaḥ pretya rājyaṃ prapadyate
29. samāhitaḥ dhaniṣṭhāsu goprayuktaṃ vastraraśmidharaṃ
yānaṃ dattvā sadyaḥ pretya rājyaṃ prapadyate
29. One who is self-controlled, having given a cow-drawn vehicle bearing cloth banners during the Dhaniṣṭhā constellation, immediately attains kingship after death.
गन्धाञ्शतभिषग्योगे दत्त्वा सागुरुचन्दनान् ।
प्राप्नोत्यप्सरसां लोकान्प्रेत्य गन्धांश्च शाश्वतान् ॥३०॥
30. gandhāñśatabhiṣagyoge dattvā sāgurucandanān ,
prāpnotyapsarasāṁ lokānpretya gandhāṁśca śāśvatān.
30. gandhān śatabhiṣagyoge dattvā sāgurucandanān
prāpnoti apsarasām lokān pretya gandhān ca śāśvatān
30. yaḥ śatabhiṣagyoge sāgurucandanān gandhān dattvā saḥ
pretya apsarasām lokān śāśvatān gandhān ca prāpnoti
30. A person who offers fragrant substances, including agallochum and sandalwood, during the astrological conjunction of the Śatabhiṣaj (nakṣatra) attains the celestial realms of the Apsaras after death, along with everlasting fragrances.
पूर्वभाद्रपदायोगे राजमाषान्प्रदाय तु ।
सर्वभक्षफलोपेतः स वै प्रेत्य सुखी भवेत् ॥३१॥
31. pūrvabhādrapadāyoge rājamāṣānpradāya tu ,
sarvabhakṣaphalopetaḥ sa vai pretya sukhī bhavet.

31. Indeed, by offering royal beans (rajmā) during the astrological conjunction of Pūrvabhādrapada (nakṣatra), that person becomes happy after death, endowed with all kinds of food and fruits.
औरभ्रमुत्तरायोगे यस्तु मांसं प्रयच्छति ।
स पितॄन्प्रीणयति वै प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमश्नुते ॥३२॥
32. aurabhramuttarāyoge yastu māṁsaṁ prayacchati ,
sa pitṝnprīṇayati vai pretya cānantyamaśnute.

sa pitṝn prīṇayati vai pretya ca ānantyam aśnute
32. yaḥ tu uttarāyoge aurabhram māṃsam prayacchati

32. Indeed, whoever offers lamb or mutton during the astrological conjunction of Uttarā (nakṣatra) pleases the ancestors (pitṛs) and, after death, certainly attains endlessness.
कांस्योपदोहनां धेनुं रेवत्यां यः प्रयच्छति ।
सा प्रेत्य कामानादाय दातारमुपतिष्ठति ॥३३॥
33. kāṁsyopadohanāṁ dhenuṁ revatyāṁ yaḥ prayacchati ,
sā pretya kāmānādāya dātāramupatiṣṭhati.

sā pretya kāmān ādāya dātāram upatiṣṭhati

33. The person who offers a cow with a bronze milking pail during the astrological conjunction of Revatī (nakṣatra) will find that cow, after death, returning to him, bringing with her all his desired objects.
रथमश्वसमायुक्तं दत्त्वाश्विन्यां नरोत्तमः ।
हस्त्यश्वरथसंपन्ने वर्चस्वी जायते कुले ॥३४॥
34. rathamaśvasamāyuktaṁ dattvāśvinyāṁ narottamaḥ ,
hastyaśvarathasaṁpanne varcasvī jāyate kule.

hastyaśvarathasaṃpanne varcasvī jāyate kule

34. A man of excellence who donates a chariot yoked with horses during the (constellation of) Aśvinī (nakṣatra) is born into an eminent family, possessing elephants, horses, and chariots.
भरणीषु द्विजातिभ्यस्तिलधेनुं प्रदाय वै ।
गाः सुप्रभूताः प्राप्नोति नरः प्रेत्य यशस्तथा ॥३५॥
35. bharaṇīṣu dvijātibhyastiladhenuṁ pradāya vai ,
gāḥ suprabhūtāḥ prāpnoti naraḥ pretya yaśastathā.

35. Indeed, a man who gives a sesame-cow (tiladhenu) to the twice-born (dvija) during the (constellation of) Bharaṇī attains abundant cows and fame in the next world.
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्येष लक्षणोद्देशः प्रोक्तो नक्षत्रयोगतः ।
देवक्या नारदेनेह सा स्नुषाभ्योऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥३६॥
36. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityeṣa lakṣaṇoddeśaḥ prokto nakṣatrayogataḥ ,
devakyā nāradeneha sā snuṣābhyo'bravīdidam.

36. Bhishma said: "This summary of characteristics described with reference to the conjunctions of lunar mansions (nakṣatra) was narrated by Nārada to Devakī here, and she, in turn, recounted this to her daughters-in-law."
