नारद उवाच ।
हिरण्यपुरमित्येतत्ख्यातं पुरवरं महत् ।
दैत्यानां दानवानां च मायाशतविचारिणाम् ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
hiraṇyapuramityetatkhyātaṁ puravaraṁ mahat ,
daityānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca māyāśatavicāriṇām.

mahat daityānām dānavānām ca māyāśatavicāriṇām
1. Nārada said: "This great and excellent city, renowned as Hiranyapura, belongs to the Daityas and Danavas, who are skilled in employing hundreds of illusions (māyā)."
अनल्पेन प्रयत्नेन निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा ।
मयेन मनसा सृष्टं पातालतलमाश्रितम् ॥२॥
2. analpena prayatnena nirmitaṁ viśvakarmaṇā ,
mayena manasā sṛṣṭaṁ pātālatalamāśritam.

mayena manasā sṛṣṭam pātālatalam āśritam
2. This city was built with great effort by Viśvakarman, and mentally created by Maya, taking its abode in the netherworld (pātāla).
अत्र मायासहस्राणि विकुर्वाणा महौजसः ।
दानवा निवसन्ति स्म शूरा दत्तवराः पुरा ॥३॥
3. atra māyāsahasrāṇi vikurvāṇā mahaujasaḥ ,
dānavā nivasanti sma śūrā dattavarāḥ purā.
3. atra māyāsahasrāṇi vikurvāṇāḥ mahaujasah
dānavāḥ nivasanti sma śūrāḥ dattavarāḥ purā
3. Here, the mighty Danavas, who could perform thousands of illusions (māyā), used to reside. These brave ones had received boons in the past.
नैते शक्रेण नान्येन वरुणेन यमेन वा ।
शक्यन्ते वशमानेतुं तथैव धनदेन च ॥४॥
4. naite śakreṇa nānyena varuṇena yamena vā ,
śakyante vaśamānetuṁ tathaiva dhanadena ca.
4. na ete śakreṇa na anyena varuṇena yamena vā
śakyante vaśam ānetum tathā eva dhanadena ca
4. These (Danavas) cannot be brought under control by Indra (Śakra), nor by any other, whether Varuna, Yama, or similarly, by Kubera (Dhanada).
असुराः कालखञ्जाश्च तथा विष्णुपदोद्भवाः ।
नैरृता यातुधानाश्च ब्रह्मवेदोद्भवाश्च ये ॥५॥
5. asurāḥ kālakhañjāśca tathā viṣṇupadodbhavāḥ ,
nairṛtā yātudhānāśca brahmavedodbhavāśca ye.
5. asurāḥ kālakhañjāḥ ca tathā viṣṇupadodbhavāḥ
nairṛtā yātudhānāḥ ca brahmavedodbhavāḥ ca ye
5. There are Asuras, and the Kālakhañjas, as well as those originating from Viṣṇu's realm. Also, there are the Nairṛtas, the Yātudhānas, and those who were born from Brahma's Veda.
दंष्ट्रिणो भीमरूपाश्च निवसन्त्यात्मरक्षिणः ।
मायावीर्योपसंपन्ना निवसन्त्यात्मरक्षिणः ॥६॥
6. daṁṣṭriṇo bhīmarūpāśca nivasantyātmarakṣiṇaḥ ,
māyāvīryopasaṁpannā nivasantyātmarakṣiṇaḥ.
6. daṃṣṭriṇaḥ bhīmarūpāḥ ca nivasanti ātmarakṣiṇaḥ
māyāvīryopasaṃpannāḥ nivasanti ātmarakṣiṇaḥ
6. Those with tusks and terrifying forms reside there, protecting themselves. Endowed with magical power (māyā) and might, they reside there, protecting themselves.
निवातकवचा नाम दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः ।
जानासि च यथा शक्रो नैताञ्शक्नोति बाधितुम् ॥७॥
7. nivātakavacā nāma dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ ,
jānāsi ca yathā śakro naitāñśaknoti bādhitum.
7. nivātakavacāḥ nāma dānavāḥ yuddhadurmadāḥ
jānāsi ca yathā śakraḥ na etān śaknoti bādhitum
7. There are Dānavas named Nivātakavacas, who are fiercely arrogant in battle. And you know well how Śakra (Indra) is unable to defeat them.
बहुशो मातले त्वं च तव पुत्रश्च गोमुखः ।
निर्भग्नो देवराजश्च सहपुत्रः शचीपतिः ॥८॥
8. bahuśo mātale tvaṁ ca tava putraśca gomukhaḥ ,
nirbhagno devarājaśca sahaputraḥ śacīpatiḥ.
8. bahuśaḥ mātale tvam ca tava putraḥ ca gomukhaḥ
nirbhagnaḥ devarājaḥ ca sahaputraḥ śacīpatiḥ
8. O Mātali, many times, you and your son Gomukha have been defeated; and the king of the gods, Śacī's husband (Indra), along with his son, was also defeated.
पश्य वेश्मानि रौक्माणि मातले राजतानि च ।
कर्मणा विधियुक्तेन युक्तान्युपगतानि च ॥९॥
9. paśya veśmāni raukmāṇi mātale rājatāni ca ,
karmaṇā vidhiyuktena yuktānyupagatāni ca.
9. paśya veśmāni raukmāṇi mātale rājatāni ca
| karmaṇā vidhiyuktena yuktāni upagatāni ca
9. Behold, O Mātali, the golden and silver mansions, which were properly acquired and adorned through actions (karma) performed according to prescribed rules.
वैडूर्यहरितानीव प्रवालरुचिराणि च ।
अर्कस्फटिकशुभ्राणि वज्रसारोज्ज्वलानि च ॥१०॥
10. vaiḍūryaharitānīva pravālarucirāṇi ca ,
arkasphaṭikaśubhrāṇi vajrasārojjvalāni ca.
10. vaiḍūryaharitāni iva pravālarucirāṇi ca |
arkasphaṭikaśubhrāṇi vajrasārojjvalāni ca
10. They (the mansions) appear emerald-green, charming like coral, bright like sun-crystals, and gleaming with the brilliance of diamonds.
पार्थिवानीव चाभान्ति पुनर्नगमयानि च ।
शैलानीव च दृश्यन्ते तारकाणीव चाप्युत ॥११॥
11. pārthivānīva cābhānti punarnagamayāni ca ,
śailānīva ca dṛśyante tārakāṇīva cāpyuta.
11. pārthivāni iva ca ābhānti punaḥ nagamayāni ca |
śailāni iva ca dṛśyante tārakāṇi iva ca api uta
11. And they appear like earthly structures, and again they seem as if made of mountains; and they are seen like mountains, and moreover, also like stars.
सूर्यरूपाणि चाभान्ति दीप्ताग्निसदृशानि च ।
मणिजालविचित्राणि प्रांशूनि निबिडानि च ॥१२॥
12. sūryarūpāṇi cābhānti dīptāgnisadṛśāni ca ,
maṇijālavicitrāṇi prāṁśūni nibiḍāni ca.
12. sūryarūpāṇi ca ābhānti dīptāgnisadṛśāni ca
| maṇijālavicitrāṇi prāṃśūni nibiḍāni ca
12. And they shine like the sun, resembling blazing fire; they are wonderfully adorned with networks of gems, lofty, and dense.
नैतानि शक्यं निर्देष्टुं रूपतो द्रव्यतस्तथा ।
गुणतश्चैव सिद्धानि प्रमाणगुणवन्ति च ॥१३॥
13. naitāni śakyaṁ nirdeṣṭuṁ rūpato dravyatastathā ,
guṇataścaiva siddhāni pramāṇaguṇavanti ca.
13. na etāni śakyam nirdeṣṭum rūpataḥ dravyatas
tathā guṇataḥ ca eva siddhāni pramāṇaguṇavanti ca
13. These, being perfected and endowed with excellent qualities, cannot indeed be precisely described by their form, substance, or inherent qualities.
आक्रीडान्पश्य दैत्यानां तथैव शयनान्युत ।
रत्नवन्ति महार्हाणि भाजनान्यासनानि च ॥१४॥
14. ākrīḍānpaśya daityānāṁ tathaiva śayanānyuta ,
ratnavanti mahārhāṇi bhājanānyāsanāni ca.
14. ākṛīḍān paśya daityānām tathā eva śayanāni
uta ratnavanti mahārhāṇi bhājanāni āsanāni ca
14. Behold the playgrounds of the demons, and also their beds, jewel-studded, and very valuable vessels and seats.
जलदाभांस्तथा शैलांस्तोयप्रस्रवणान्वितान् ।
कामपुष्पफलांश्चैव पादपान्कामचारिणः ॥१५॥
15. jaladābhāṁstathā śailāṁstoyaprasravaṇānvitān ,
kāmapuṣpaphalāṁścaiva pādapānkāmacāriṇaḥ.
15. jaladābhān tathā śailān toyaprasravaṇānvitān
kāmapuṣpaphalān ca eva pādapān kāmacāriṇaḥ
15. And behold the mountains resembling clouds, endowed with streams of water, and also the trees bearing desired flowers and fruits, moving at will.
मातले कश्चिदत्रापि रुचितस्ते वरो भवेत् ।
अथ वान्यां दिशं भूमेर्गच्छाव यदि मन्यसे ॥१६॥
16. mātale kaścidatrāpi rucitaste varo bhavet ,
atha vānyāṁ diśaṁ bhūmergacchāva yadi manyase.
16. mātale kaścit atra api rucitaḥ te varaḥ bhavet
atha vā anyām diśam bhūmeḥ gacchāva yadi manyase
16. O Mātali, is there anything here that might be pleasing to you as a choice? Or else, shall we go to another direction of the earth, if you think it fit?
कण्व उवाच ।
मातलिस्त्वब्रवीदेनं भाषमाणं तथाविधम् ।
देवर्षे नैव मे कार्यं विप्रियं त्रिदिवौकसाम् ॥१७॥
17. kaṇva uvāca ,
mātalistvabravīdenaṁ bhāṣamāṇaṁ tathāvidham ,
devarṣe naiva me kāryaṁ vipriyaṁ tridivaukasām.
17. kaṇva uvāca mātaliḥ tu abravīt enam bhāṣamāṇam tathāvidham
devarṣe na eva me kāryam vipriyam tridivaukasām
17. Kaṇva spoke: "But Mātali said to him, who was speaking in that manner, 'O divine sage, it is certainly not my duty to displease the denizens of heaven.'"
नित्यानुषक्तवैरा हि भ्रातरो देवदानवाः ।
अरिपक्षेण संबन्धं रोचयिष्याम्यहं कथम् ॥१८॥
18. nityānuṣaktavairā hi bhrātaro devadānavāḥ ,
aripakṣeṇa saṁbandhaṁ rocayiṣyāmyahaṁ katham.
18. nityānuṣaktavairāḥ hi bhrātaraḥ devadānavāḥ
aripakṣeṇa saṃbandham rocayiṣyāmi aham katham
18. Indeed, the gods and Dānavas are brothers who are bound by perpetual enmity. How then can I desire a connection with the enemy's side?
अन्यत्र साधु गच्छावो द्रष्टुं नार्हामि दानवान् ।
जानामि तु तथात्मानं दित्सात्मकमलं यथा ॥१९॥
19. anyatra sādhu gacchāvo draṣṭuṁ nārhāmi dānavān ,
jānāmi tu tathātmānaṁ ditsātmakamalaṁ yathā.
19. anyatra sādhu gacchāvaḥ draṣṭum na arhāmi dānavān
jānāmi tu tathā ātmānam ditsātmakam alam yathā
19. "Let us go elsewhere, good sir. I am not fit to see the Dānavas, for I know my own nature (ātman) to be of a gifting disposition."
