Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, tell me how Drona, the great archer, and Drupada (Pāñcālya), the son of Pṛṣata, both being eager for battle, confronted each other."

2.
O Sanjaya, I consider destiny (diṣṭam) alone to be supreme, even over human effort (pauruṣa), when Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, could not overcome the Pandava (Arjuna) in battle.

Indeed, Bhishma, enraged in battle, could destroy all beings, moving and unmoving. How then, O Sanjaya, did he not overcome the Pandava in battle with his great power?

Sanjaya said: "Listen, O King, remaining steadfast, to this exceedingly dreadful battle. The Pandava cannot be conquered even by the gods, including Indra."

But Drona fought Dhristadyumna with sharp arrows. And he struck down Dhristadyumna's charioteer from the chariot's seat with a barbed arrow.

Then, enraged, O respected one, he afflicted Dhristadyumna, striking his four steeds with four excellent arrows.

Then again, Drona (Bhāradvāja), whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable and who was mighty, overwhelmed the wrathful Dhṛṣṭadyumna with arrows.

And he took a terrible arrow, aimed at the destruction of Pṛṣata's son (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), whose touch was like Indra's thunderbolt, as if it were another staff of Death.

O Bhārata, there was a great cry of distress from the entire army, having seen that arrow fixed [on the bow] by Drona (Bhāradvāja) in battle.

There, we witnessed Dhrishtadyumna's astonishing valor, as he, a solitary hero, stood unwavering in battle like an immovable mountain.

12.
And he cut down that dreadful, blazing arrow, which was approaching like his own death (ātman), and indeed, he discharged a shower of arrows at Bharadvaja (Droṇa).

Thereupon, all the Panchalas, together with the Pandavas, shouted loudly, having witnessed that extremely difficult feat (karma) accomplished by Dhrishtadyumna.

O King, then Drona, enraged, having displayed valor at the front of the army, again severed the bow of Drupada's son (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).

Then Drona, he of immeasurable spirit (ātman), showered him (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), whose bow was severed, with well-jointed arrows, just as a cloud showers rain upon a mountain.

And with a "bhalla" arrow, he struck down his (Dhṛṣṭadyumna's) charioteer from the chariot-seat. Then, with four sharp arrows, he (also struck down) his four horses.

He caused a lion's roar to resound in battle and roared. Then, with another spear-like arrow (bhalla), he severed the bow from his opponent's hand.

He, whose bow was cut, who was without a chariot, whose horses were slain, and whose charioteer was killed, dismounted with a mace in hand, demonstrating great valor (pauruṣa).

O Bhārata, he quickly struck down that (mace) with his arrows, while he himself had not yet dismounted from his chariot. That was indeed astonishing.

Then, he, the strong-armed and powerful one, having seized a great, hundred-mooned, and radiant shield, and also a great, divine sword (khaḍga)...

Dhṛṣṭadyumna rushed towards Drona with great speed, intent on slaying him, just as a lion in the forest, seeking its prey, charges at an intoxicated elephant.

O descendant of Bharata, there we witnessed the amazing valor (pauruṣam) of Drona, his dexterity, his skill in wielding weapons (astra-yogam), and the strength of his arms.

(Drona) checked Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) with a shower of arrows, so that (Pārṣata), though powerful, was unable to advance from that spot in the battle.

There we saw Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great warrior, standing and warding off the volleys of arrows with his shield, like one whose hands are well-trained (kṛta-hastavat).

Then, the mighty-armed and powerful Bhima suddenly rushed into battle, assisting the great-souled son of Pṛṣata (Dṛṣṭadyumna).

O King, Bhima pierced Droṇa with seven sharp arrows, and then quickly mounted Prishata's son (Dṛṣṭadyumna) onto another chariot.

Then King Duryodhana dispatched the King of Kaliṅga, who was accompanied by a large army, for the protection of Bharadvāja's son (Droṇa).

Even Droṇa, the foremost among charioteers, having released Dhṛṣṭadyumna, engaged the aged Virāṭa and Drupada, who had come together, in battle. Meanwhile, Dhṛṣṭadyumna himself, in the conflict, approached Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja).

Thereafter, a tumultuous and hair-raising battle commenced. It was fought in the conflict between the Kaliṅgas and the great-souled Bhīma, and it was devastating to the world, dreadful in its appearance, and utterly terrifying.
