कथं द्रोणो महेष्वासः पाञ्चाल्यश्चापि पार्षतः ।
रणे समीयतुर्यत्तौ तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kathaṁ droṇo maheṣvāsaḥ pāñcālyaścāpi pārṣataḥ ,

1. Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, tell me how Drona, the great archer, and Drupada (Pāñcālya), the son of Pṛṣata, both being eager for battle, confronted each other."
दिष्टमेव परं मन्ये पौरुषादपि संजय ।
यत्र शांतनवो भीष्मो नातरद्युधि पाण्डवम् ॥२॥
2. diṣṭameva paraṁ manye pauruṣādapi saṁjaya ,
yatra śāṁtanavo bhīṣmo nātaradyudhi pāṇḍavam.
2. diṣṭam eva param manye pauruṣāt api sañjaya
yatra śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ na atarat yudhi pāṇḍavam

2. O Sanjaya, I consider destiny (diṣṭam) alone to be supreme, even over human effort (pauruṣa), when Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, could not overcome the Pandava (Arjuna) in battle.
भीष्मो हि समरे क्रुद्धो हन्याल्लोकांश्चराचरान् ।
स कथं पाण्डवं युद्धे नातरत्संजयौजसा ॥३॥
3. bhīṣmo hi samare kruddho hanyāllokāṁścarācarān ,
sa kathaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ yuddhe nātaratsaṁjayaujasā.

sa katham pāṇḍavam yuddhe na atarat saṃjaya ojasā

3. Indeed, Bhishma, enraged in battle, could destroy all beings, moving and unmoving. How then, O Sanjaya, did he not overcome the Pandava in battle with his great power?
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्स्थिरो भूत्वा युद्धमेतत्सुदारुणम् ।
न शक्यः पाण्डवो जेतुं देवैरपि सवासवैः ॥४॥
4. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājansthiro bhūtvā yuddhametatsudāruṇam ,
na śakyaḥ pāṇḍavo jetuṁ devairapi savāsavaiḥ.

sudāruṇam na śakyaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ jetum devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ

4. Sanjaya said: "Listen, O King, remaining steadfast, to this exceedingly dreadful battle. The Pandava cannot be conquered even by the gods, including Indra."
द्रोणस्तु निशितैर्बाणैर्धृष्टद्युम्नमयोधयत् ।
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपातयत् ॥५॥
5. droṇastu niśitairbāṇairdhṛṣṭadyumnamayodhayat ,
sārathiṁ cāsya bhallena rathanīḍādapātayat.
5. droṇaḥ tu niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnam ayodhayat
sārathim ca asya bhallena rathanīḍāt apātayat
5. tu droṇaḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnam ayodhayat

5. But Drona fought Dhristadyumna with sharp arrows. And he struck down Dhristadyumna's charioteer from the chariot's seat with a barbed arrow.
तस्याथ चतुरो वाहांश्चतुर्भिः सायकोत्तमैः ।
पीडयामास संक्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नस्य मारिष ॥६॥
6. tasyātha caturo vāhāṁścaturbhiḥ sāyakottamaiḥ ,
pīḍayāmāsa saṁkruddho dhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣa.
6. tasya atha caturaḥ vāhān caturbhiḥ sāyakauttamaiḥ
pīḍayāmāsa saṃkruddhaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣa
6. māriṣa atha saṃkruddhaḥ tasya dhṛṣṭadyumnasya

6. Then, enraged, O respected one, he afflicted Dhristadyumna, striking his four steeds with four excellent arrows.
धृष्टद्युम्नस्ततो द्रोणं नवत्या निशितैः शरैः ।
विव्याध प्रहसन्वीरस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. dhṛṣṭadyumnastato droṇaṁ navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
vivyādha prahasanvīrastiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt.
7. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ tataḥ droṇam navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ |
vivyādha prahasan vīraḥ tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti ca abravīt
7. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ vīraḥ tataḥ prahasan navatyā niśitaiḥ
śaraiḥ droṇam vivyādha ca "tiṣṭha tiṣṭha" iti abravīt
7. Then, the hero Dhṛṣṭadyumna, laughing, pierced Droṇa with ninety sharp arrows and said, 'Stop! Stop!'
ततः पुनरमेयात्मा भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ।
शरैः प्रच्छादयामास धृष्टद्युम्नममर्षणम् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ punarameyātmā bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ,
śaraiḥ pracchādayāmāsa dhṛṣṭadyumnamamarṣaṇam.
8. tataḥ punaḥ ameyātmā bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān |
śaraiḥ pracchādayāmāsa dhṛṣṭadyumnam amarṣaṇam
8. tataḥ punaḥ ameyātmā pratāpavān bhāradvājaḥ
śaraiḥ amarṣaṇam dhṛṣṭadyumnam pracchādayāmāsa
8. Then again, Drona (Bhāradvāja), whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable and who was mighty, overwhelmed the wrathful Dhṛṣṭadyumna with arrows.
आददे च शरं घोरं पार्षतस्य वधं प्रति ।
शक्राशनिसमस्पर्शं मृत्युदण्डमिवापरम् ॥९॥
9. ādade ca śaraṁ ghoraṁ pārṣatasya vadhaṁ prati ,
śakrāśanisamasparśaṁ mṛtyudaṇḍamivāparam.
9. ādade ca śaram ghoram pārṣatasya vadham prati |
śakra-aśani-sama-sparśam mṛtyu-daṇḍam iva aparam
9. ca saḥ pārṣatasya vadham prati ghoram
śakra-aśani-sama-sparśam aparam mṛtyu-daṇḍam iva śaram ādade
9. And he took a terrible arrow, aimed at the destruction of Pṛṣata's son (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), whose touch was like Indra's thunderbolt, as if it were another staff of Death.
हाहाकारो महानासीत्सर्वसैन्यस्य भारत ।
तमिषुं संधितं दृष्ट्वा भारद्वाजेन संयुगे ॥१०॥
10. hāhākāro mahānāsītsarvasainyasya bhārata ,
tamiṣuṁ saṁdhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhāradvājena saṁyuge.
10. hāhā-kāraḥ mahān āsīt sarva-sainyasya bhārata |
tam iṣum saṃdhitam dṛṣṭvā bhāradvājena saṃyuge
10. bhārata,
saṃyuge bhāradvājena tam saṃdhitam iṣum dṛṣṭvā sarvasainyasya mahān hāhā-kāraḥ āsīt
10. O Bhārata, there was a great cry of distress from the entire army, having seen that arrow fixed [on the bow] by Drona (Bhāradvāja) in battle.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम धृष्टद्युम्नस्य पौरुषम् ।
यदेकः समरे वीरस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥११॥
11. tatrādbhutamapaśyāma dhṛṣṭadyumnasya pauruṣam ,
yadekaḥ samare vīrastasthau giririvācalaḥ.
11. tatra adbhutam apaśyāma dhṛṣṭadyumnasya pauruṣam
yat ekaḥ samare vīraḥ tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥ
11. tatra dhṛṣṭadyumnasya adbhutam pauruṣam apaśyāma
yat ekaḥ vīraḥ samare acalaḥ giriḥ iva tasthau
11. There, we witnessed Dhrishtadyumna's astonishing valor, as he, a solitary hero, stood unwavering in battle like an immovable mountain.
तं च दीप्तं शरं घोरमायान्तं मृत्युमात्मनः ।
चिच्छेद शरवृष्टिं च भारद्वाजे मुमोच ह ॥१२॥
12. taṁ ca dīptaṁ śaraṁ ghoramāyāntaṁ mṛtyumātmanaḥ ,
ciccheda śaravṛṣṭiṁ ca bhāradvāje mumoca ha.
12. tam ca dīptam śaram ghoram āyāntam mṛtyum ātmanaḥ
ciccheda śaravṛṣṭim ca bhāradvāje mumoca ha
12. ca tam dīptam ghoram mṛtyum ātmanaḥ āyāntam
śaram ciccheda ca bhāradvāje śaravṛṣṭim ha mumoca
12. And he cut down that dreadful, blazing arrow, which was approaching like his own death (ātman), and indeed, he discharged a shower of arrows at Bharadvaja (Droṇa).
तत उच्चुक्रुशुः सर्वे पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ।
धृष्टद्युम्नेन तत्कर्म कृतं दृष्ट्वा सुदुष्करम् ॥१३॥
13. tata uccukruśuḥ sarve pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnena tatkarma kṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā suduṣkaram.
13. tataḥ uccukruśuḥ sarve pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
dhṛṣṭadyumnena tat karma kṛtam dṛṣṭvā suduṣkaram
13. tataḥ sarve pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha dhṛṣṭadyumnena
kṛtam tat suduṣkaram karma dṛṣṭvā uccukruśuḥ
13. Thereupon, all the Panchalas, together with the Pandavas, shouted loudly, having witnessed that extremely difficult feat (karma) accomplished by Dhrishtadyumna.
ततः शक्तिं महावेगां स्वर्णवैडूर्यभूषिताम् ।
द्रोणस्य निधनाकाङ्क्षी चिक्षेप स पराक्रमी ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ śaktiṁ mahāvegāṁ svarṇavaiḍūryabhūṣitām ,
droṇasya nidhanākāṅkṣī cikṣepa sa parākramī.
14. tataḥ śaktim mahāvegām svarṇavaiḍūryabhūṣitām
droṇasya nidhanākāṅkṣī cikṣepa sa parākramī
14. tataḥ saḥ parākramī droṇasya nidhanākāṅkṣī
mahāvegām svarṇavaiḍūryabhūṣitām śaktim cikṣepa
14. Thereupon, that valorous (parākramī) warrior, desiring Drona's destruction, hurled a very swift spear (śakti), adorned with gold and cat's eye gems.
तामापतन्तीं सहसा शक्तिं कनकभूषणाम् ।
त्रिधा चिक्षेप समरे भारद्वाजो हसन्निव ॥१५॥
15. tāmāpatantīṁ sahasā śaktiṁ kanakabhūṣaṇām ,
tridhā cikṣepa samare bhāradvājo hasanniva.
15. tām āpatantīm sahasā śaktim kanakabhūṣaṇām
tridhā cikṣepa samare bhāradvājaḥ hasan iva
15. bhāradvājaḥ samare hasan iva sahasā tām
kanakabhūṣaṇām āpatantīm śaktim tridhā cikṣepa
15. Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), as if laughing, quickly shattered that gold-ornamented spear (śakti) that was rushing towards him into three pieces right there in the battle.
शक्तिं विनिहतां दृष्ट्वा धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् ।
ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि द्रोणं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥१६॥
16. śaktiṁ vinihatāṁ dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān ,
vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi droṇaṁ prati janeśvara.
16. śaktim vinihatām dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pratāpavān
vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi droṇam prati janeśvara
16. janeśvara vinihatām śaktim dṛṣṭvā pratāpavān
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ droṇam prati śaravarṣāṇi vavarṣa
16. O king, upon seeing his spear (śakti) destroyed, the mighty Dhṛṣṭadyumna showered Droṇa with torrents of arrows.
शरवर्षं ततस्तं तु संनिवार्य महायशाः ।
द्रोणो द्रुपदपुत्रस्य मध्ये चिच्छेद कार्मुकम् ॥१७॥
17. śaravarṣaṁ tatastaṁ tu saṁnivārya mahāyaśāḥ ,
droṇo drupadaputrasya madhye ciccheda kārmukam.
17. śaravarṣam tataḥ tam tu saṃnivārya mahāyaśāḥ
droṇaḥ drupadaputrasya madhye ciccheda kārmukam
17. mahāyaśāḥ droṇaḥ tu tataḥ tam śaravarṣam saṃnivārya

17. But the highly renowned Droṇa, having repelled that shower of arrows, then cut Drupada's son's (Dhṛṣṭadyumna's) bow right in the middle.
स च्छिन्नधन्वा समरे गदां गुर्वीं महायशाः ।
द्रोणाय प्रेषयामास गिरिसारमयीं बली ॥१८॥
18. sa cchinnadhanvā samare gadāṁ gurvīṁ mahāyaśāḥ ,
droṇāya preṣayāmāsa girisāramayīṁ balī.
18. saḥ chinnadhanvā samare gadām gurvīm mahāyaśāḥ
droṇāya preṣayām āsa girisāramayīm balī
18. saḥ balī mahāyaśāḥ samare chinnadhanvā
girisāramayīm gurvīm gadām droṇāya preṣayām āsa
18. He, the mighty and highly renowned Dhṛṣṭadyumna, whose bow had been shattered in battle, then hurled a heavy mace made of mountain-rock essence towards Droṇa.
सा गदा वेगवन्मुक्ता प्रायाद्द्रोणजिघांसया ।
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम भारद्वाजस्य विक्रमम् ॥१९॥
19. sā gadā vegavanmuktā prāyāddroṇajighāṁsayā ,
tatrādbhutamapaśyāma bhāradvājasya vikramam.
19. sā gadā vegavat muktā prāyāt droṇajighāṃsayā
tatra adbhutam apaśyāma bhāradvājasya vikramam
19. sā vegavat muktā gadā droṇajighāṃsayā prāyāt
tatra bhāradvājasya adbhutam vikramam apaśyāma
19. That mace, released with great force, flew with the intent to kill Droṇa. There, we witnessed the astonishing valor (vikrama) of Bhāradvāja's son.
लाघवाद्व्यंसयामास गदां हेमविभूषिताम् ।
व्यंसयित्वा गदां तां च प्रेषयामास पार्षते ॥२०॥
20. lāghavādvyaṁsayāmāsa gadāṁ hemavibhūṣitām ,
vyaṁsayitvā gadāṁ tāṁ ca preṣayāmāsa pārṣate.
20. lāghavāt vyaṃsayāmāsa gadām hemavibhūṣitām
vyaṃsayitvā gadām tām ca preṣayāmāsa pārṣate
20. [droṇaḥ] lāghavāt hemavibhūṣitām gadām vyaṃsayāmāsa
tām gadām ca vyaṃsayitvā [saḥ] pārṣate preṣayāmāsa
20. With agility, he deflected the mace adorned with gold. Having deflected that mace, he sent it back at Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).
भल्लान्सुनिशितान्पीतान्स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ्शिलाशितान् ।
ते तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे ॥२१॥
21. bhallānsuniśitānpītānsvarṇapuṅkhāñśilāśitān ,
te tasya kavacaṁ bhittvā papuḥ śoṇitamāhave.
21. bhallān suniśitān pītān svarṇapuṅkhān śilāśitān
te tasya kavacam bhittvā papuḥ śoṇitam āhave
21. te suniśitān pītān svarṇapuṅkhān śilāśitān
bhallān tasya kavacam bhittvā āhave śoṇitam papuḥ
21. He released very sharp, yellow-tinged, gold-fletched arrows, sharpened on stone. Those arrows, having pierced his (Droṇa's) armor, drank his blood in battle.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय धृष्टद्युम्नो महामनाः ।
द्रोणं युधि पराक्रम्य शरैर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः ॥२२॥
22. athānyaddhanurādāya dhṛṣṭadyumno mahāmanāḥ ,
droṇaṁ yudhi parākramya śarairvivyādha pañcabhiḥ.
22. atha anyat dhanuḥ ādāya dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ mahāmanāḥ
droṇam yudhi parākramya śaraiḥ vivyādha pañcabhiḥ
22. atha mahāmanāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ anyat dhanuḥ ādāya
yudhi parākramya pañcabhiḥ śaraiḥ droṇam vivyādha
22. Then, the great-minded Dhṛṣṭadyumna, taking up another bow and displaying his prowess in battle, pierced Droṇa with five arrows.
रुधिराक्तौ ततस्तौ तु शुशुभाते नरर्षभौ ।
वसन्तसमये राजन्पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥२३॥
23. rudhirāktau tatastau tu śuśubhāte nararṣabhau ,
vasantasamaye rājanpuṣpitāviva kiṁśukau.
23. rudhirāktau tataḥ tau tu śuśubhāte nararṣabhau
vasantasamaye rājan puṣpitau iva kiṃśukau
23. rājan tataḥ tu rudhirāktau tau nararṣabhau

23. O King, then those two best of men (nararṣabha), stained with blood, shone brightly like two palāśa (kiṃśuka) trees in bloom during springtime.
अमर्षितस्ततो राजन्पराक्रम्य चमूमुखे ।
द्रोणो द्रुपदपुत्रस्य पुनश्चिच्छेद कार्मुकम् ॥२४॥
24. amarṣitastato rājanparākramya camūmukhe ,
droṇo drupadaputrasya punaściccheda kārmukam.
24. amarṣitaḥ tataḥ rājan parākramya camūmukhe
droṇaḥ drupadaputrasya punaḥ ciccheda kārmukam
24. rājan tataḥ amarṣitaḥ droṇaḥ camūmukhe parākramya
punaḥ drupadaputrasya kārmukam ciccheda
24. O King, then Drona, enraged, having displayed valor at the front of the army, again severed the bow of Drupada's son (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
अवाकिरदमेयात्मा वृष्ट्या मेघ इवाचलम् ॥२५॥
25. athainaṁ chinnadhanvānaṁ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
avākiradameyātmā vṛṣṭyā megha ivācalam.
25. atha enam chinnadhanvānam śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ
avākirat ameyātmā vṛṣṭyā meghaḥ iva acalam
25. atha ameyātmā meghaḥ vṛṣṭyā acalam iva
chinnadhanvānam enam saṃnataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ avākirat
25. Then Drona, he of immeasurable spirit (ātman), showered him (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), whose bow was severed, with well-jointed arrows, just as a cloud showers rain upon a mountain.
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपातयत् ।
अथास्य चतुरो वाहांश्चतुर्भिर्निशितैः शरैः ॥२६॥
26. sārathiṁ cāsya bhallena rathanīḍādapātayat ,
athāsya caturo vāhāṁścaturbhirniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
26. sārathim ca asya bhallena rathanīḍāt apātayat
atha asya caturaḥ vāhān caturbhiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
26. ca asya sārathim bhallena rathanīḍāt apātayat atha asya
caturaḥ vāhān caturbhiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ (apātayat)
26. And with a "bhalla" arrow, he struck down his (Dhṛṣṭadyumna's) charioteer from the chariot-seat. Then, with four sharp arrows, he (also struck down) his four horses.
पातयामास समरे सिंहनादं ननाद च ।
ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन हस्ताच्चापमथाच्छिनत् ॥२७॥
27. pātayāmāsa samare siṁhanādaṁ nanāda ca ,
tato'pareṇa bhallena hastāccāpamathācchinat.
27. pātayāmāsa samare siṃhanādaṃ nanāda ca tataḥ
apareṇa bhallena hastāt cāpam atha acchinat
27. samare siṃhanādaṃ pātayāmāsa ca nanāda tataḥ
atha apareṇa bhallena hastāt cāpam acchinat
27. He caused a lion's roar to resound in battle and roared. Then, with another spear-like arrow (bhalla), he severed the bow from his opponent's hand.
स च्छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः ।
गदापाणिरवारोहत्ख्यापयन्पौरुषं महत् ॥२८॥
28. sa cchinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ ,
gadāpāṇiravārohatkhyāpayanpauruṣaṁ mahat.
28. saḥ cchinnadhanvā virathaḥ hatāśvaḥ hatasārathiḥ
gadāpāṇiḥ avārohat khyāpayan pauruṣam mahat
28. saḥ cchinnadhanvā virathaḥ hatāśvaḥ hatasārathiḥ
gadāpāṇiḥ mahat pauruṣam khyāpayan avārohat
28. He, whose bow was cut, who was without a chariot, whose horses were slain, and whose charioteer was killed, dismounted with a mace in hand, demonstrating great valor (pauruṣa).
तामस्य विशिखैस्तूर्णं पातयामास भारत ।
रथादनवरूढस्य तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥२९॥
29. tāmasya viśikhaistūrṇaṁ pātayāmāsa bhārata ,
rathādanavarūḍhasya tadadbhutamivābhavat.
29. tām asya viśikhaiḥ tūrṇaṃ pātayāmāsa bhārata
rathāt anavarūḍhasya tat adbhutam iva abhavat
29. bhārata asya tām tūrṇaṃ viśikhaiḥ pātayāmāsa
rathāt anavarūḍhasya tat adbhutam iva abhavat
29. O Bhārata, he quickly struck down that (mace) with his arrows, while he himself had not yet dismounted from his chariot. That was indeed astonishing.
ततः स विपुलं चर्म शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ।
खड्गं च विपुलं दिव्यं प्रगृह्य सुभुजो बली ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ sa vipulaṁ carma śatacandraṁ ca bhānumat ,
khaḍgaṁ ca vipulaṁ divyaṁ pragṛhya subhujo balī.

30. Then, he, the strong-armed and powerful one, having seized a great, hundred-mooned, and radiant shield, and also a great, divine sword (khaḍga)...
अभिदुद्राव वेगेन द्रोणस्य वधकाङ्क्षया ।
आमिषार्थी यथा सिंहो वने मत्तमिव द्विपम् ॥३१॥
31. abhidudrāva vegena droṇasya vadhakāṅkṣayā ,
āmiṣārthī yathā siṁho vane mattamiva dvipam.

31. Dhṛṣṭadyumna rushed towards Drona with great speed, intent on slaying him, just as a lion in the forest, seeking its prey, charges at an intoxicated elephant.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम भारद्वाजस्य पौरुषम् ।
लाघवं चास्त्रयोगं च बलं बाह्वोश्च भारत ॥३२॥
32. tatrādbhutamapaśyāma bhāradvājasya pauruṣam ,
lāghavaṁ cāstrayogaṁ ca balaṁ bāhvośca bhārata.
32. tatra adbhutam apaśyāma bhāradvājasya pauruṣam
lāghavam ca astra-yogam ca balam bāhvoḥ ca bhārata
32. bhārata tatra adbhutam bhāradvājasya pauruṣam ca

32. O descendant of Bharata, there we witnessed the amazing valor (pauruṣam) of Drona, his dexterity, his skill in wielding weapons (astra-yogam), and the strength of his arms.
यदेनं शरवर्षेण वारयामास पार्षतम् ।
न शशाक ततो गन्तुं बलवानपि संयुगे ॥३३॥
33. yadenaṁ śaravarṣeṇa vārayāmāsa pārṣatam ,
na śaśāka tato gantuṁ balavānapi saṁyuge.
33. yat enam śara-varṣeṇa vārayāmāsa pārṣatam
na śaśāka tataḥ gantum balavān api saṃyuge

33. (Drona) checked Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) with a shower of arrows, so that (Pārṣata), though powerful, was unable to advance from that spot in the battle.
तत्र स्थितमपश्याम धृष्टद्युम्नं महारथम् ।
वारयाणं शरौघांश्च चर्मणा कृतहस्तवत् ॥३४॥
34. tatra sthitamapaśyāma dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ mahāratham ,
vārayāṇaṁ śaraughāṁśca carmaṇā kṛtahastavat.

vārayāṇam śara-oghān ca carmaṇā kṛta-hastavat

34. There we saw Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great warrior, standing and warding off the volleys of arrows with his shield, like one whose hands are well-trained (kṛta-hastavat).
ततो भीमो महाबाहुः सहसाभ्यपतद्बली ।
साहाय्यकारी समरे पार्षतस्य महात्मनः ॥३५॥
35. tato bhīmo mahābāhuḥ sahasābhyapatadbalī ,
sāhāyyakārī samare pārṣatasya mahātmanaḥ.

35. Then, the mighty-armed and powerful Bhima suddenly rushed into battle, assisting the great-souled son of Pṛṣata (Dṛṣṭadyumna).
स द्रोणं निशितैर्बाणै राजन्विव्याध सप्तभिः ।
पार्षतं च तदा तूर्णमन्यमारोपयद्रथम् ॥३६॥
36. sa droṇaṁ niśitairbāṇai rājanvivyādha saptabhiḥ ,
pārṣataṁ ca tadā tūrṇamanyamāropayadratham.

36. O King, Bhima pierced Droṇa with seven sharp arrows, and then quickly mounted Prishata's son (Dṛṣṭadyumna) onto another chariot.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा कलिङ्गं समचोदयत् ।
सैन्येन महता युक्तं भारद्वाजस्य रक्षणे ॥३७॥
37. tato duryodhano rājā kaliṅgaṁ samacodayat ,
sainyena mahatā yuktaṁ bhāradvājasya rakṣaṇe.

37. Then King Duryodhana dispatched the King of Kaliṅga, who was accompanied by a large army, for the protection of Bharadvāja's son (Droṇa).
ततः सा महती सेना कलिङ्गानां जनेश्वर ।
भीममभ्युद्ययौ तूर्णं तव पुत्रस्य शासनात् ॥३८॥
38. tataḥ sā mahatī senā kaliṅgānāṁ janeśvara ,
bhīmamabhyudyayau tūrṇaṁ tava putrasya śāsanāt.

38. O Lord of men, then that great army of the Kaliṅgas swiftly advanced against Bhima, by the command of your son.
पाञ्चाल्यमभिसंत्यज्य द्रोणोऽपि रथिनां वरः ।
विराटद्रुपदौ वृद्धौ योधयामास संगतौ ।
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि समरे धर्मराजं समभ्ययात् ॥३९॥
39. pāñcālyamabhisaṁtyajya droṇo'pi rathināṁ varaḥ ,
virāṭadrupadau vṛddhau yodhayāmāsa saṁgatau ,
dhṛṣṭadyumno'pi samare dharmarājaṁ samabhyayāt.

rathinām varaḥ virāṭa-drupadau vṛddhau
yodhayāmāsa saṅgatau dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ

39. Even Droṇa, the foremost among charioteers, having released Dhṛṣṭadyumna, engaged the aged Virāṭa and Drupada, who had come together, in battle. Meanwhile, Dhṛṣṭadyumna himself, in the conflict, approached Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja).
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ।
कलिङ्गानां च समरे भीमस्य च महात्मनः ।
जगतः प्रक्षयकरं घोररूपं भयानकम् ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam ,
kaliṅgānāṁ ca samare bhīmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
jagataḥ prakṣayakaraṁ ghorarūpaṁ bhayānakam.

40. Thereafter, a tumultuous and hair-raising battle commenced. It was fought in the conflict between the Kaliṅgas and the great-souled Bhīma, and it was devastating to the world, dreadful in its appearance, and utterly terrifying.
