उपमन्युरुवाच ।
एतान्सहस्रशश्चान्यान्समनुध्यातवान्हरः ।
कस्मात्प्रसादं भगवान्न कुर्यात्तव माधव ॥१॥
1. upamanyuruvāca ,
etānsahasraśaścānyānsamanudhyātavānharaḥ ,
kasmātprasādaṁ bhagavānna kuryāttava mādhava.

1. Upamanyu said: Hari has meditated upon these and thousands of others. Why would the revered one, O Mādhava, not bestow his grace upon you?
त्वादृशेन हि देवानां श्लाघनीयः समागमः ।
ब्रह्मण्येनानृशंसेन श्रद्दधानेन चाप्युत ।
जप्यं च ते प्रदास्यामि येन द्रक्ष्यसि शंकरम् ॥२॥
2. tvādṛśena hi devānāṁ ślāghanīyaḥ samāgamaḥ ,
brahmaṇyenānṛśaṁsena śraddadhānena cāpyuta ,
japyaṁ ca te pradāsyāmi yena drakṣyasi śaṁkaram.
2. tvādṛśena hi devānām ślāghanīyaḥ
samāgamaḥ brāhmaṇyena ānṛśaṃsena
śraddadhānena ca api uta japyām ca te
pradāsyāmi yena drakṣyasi śaṃkaram

2. Indeed, an association with one like you is commendable for the gods. Especially for one who is devoted to the sacred (brāhmaṇya), is not cruel, and is full of faith. Moreover, I will give you a sacred chant (japyā) by which you will see Śaṅkara.
कृष्ण उवाच ।
अब्रुवं तमहं ब्रह्मंस्त्वत्प्रसादान्महामुने ।
द्रक्ष्ये दितिजसंघानां मर्दनं त्रिदशेश्वरम् ॥३॥
3. kṛṣṇa uvāca ,
abruvaṁ tamahaṁ brahmaṁstvatprasādānmahāmune ,
drakṣye ditijasaṁghānāṁ mardanaṁ tridaśeśvaram.

mahāmune drakṣye ditijasaṃghānām mardanam tridaśeśvaram

3. Kṛṣṇa said: "O Brahmin, O great sage, I told him, 'By your grace, I will see the vanquisher of the hosts of demons, the Lord of the gods.'"
दिनेऽष्टमे च विप्रेण दीक्षितोऽहं यथाविधि ।
दण्डी मुण्डी कुशी चीरी घृताक्तो मेखली तथा ॥४॥
4. dine'ṣṭame ca vipreṇa dīkṣito'haṁ yathāvidhi ,
daṇḍī muṇḍī kuśī cīrī ghṛtākto mekhalī tathā.

4. On the eighth day, I was initiated by the Brahmin according to the prescribed rites, becoming one who carries a staff, has a shaven head, wears kuśa grass, wears bark garments, is smeared with ghee, and wears a girdle.
मासमेकं फलाहारो द्वितीयं सलिलाशनः ।
तृतीयं च चतुर्थं च पञ्चमं चानिलाशनः ॥५॥
5. māsamekaṁ phalāhāro dvitīyaṁ salilāśanaḥ ,
tṛtīyaṁ ca caturthaṁ ca pañcamaṁ cānilāśanaḥ.
5. māsam ekam phalāhāraḥ dvitīyam salilāśanaḥ
tṛtīyam ca caturtham ca pañcamam ca anilāśanaḥ
5. ekam māsam phalāhāraḥ dvitīyam salilāśanaḥ

5. For one month, I subsisted on fruit; for the second, on water; and for the third, fourth, and fifth, on air.
एकपादेन तिष्ठंश्च ऊर्ध्वबाहुरतन्द्रितः ।
तेजः सूर्यसहस्रस्य अपश्यं दिवि भारत ॥६॥
6. ekapādena tiṣṭhaṁśca ūrdhvabāhuratandritaḥ ,
tejaḥ sūryasahasrasya apaśyaṁ divi bhārata.

6. O Bhārata, standing on one foot with uplifted arms, untiringly, I beheld a splendor in the sky, like that of a thousand suns.
तस्य मध्यगतं चापि तेजसः पाण्डुनन्दन ।
इन्द्रायुधपिनद्धाङ्गं विद्युन्मालागवाक्षकम् ।
नीलशैलचयप्रख्यं बलाकाभूषितं घनम् ॥७॥
7. tasya madhyagataṁ cāpi tejasaḥ pāṇḍunandana ,
indrāyudhapinaddhāṅgaṁ vidyunmālāgavākṣakam ,
nīlaśailacayaprakhyaṁ balākābhūṣitaṁ ghanam.
7. tasya madhyagatam ca api tejasaḥ
pāṇḍunandana indrāyudhapinaddhāṅgam
vidyunmālāgavākṣakam

7. O son of Pāṇḍu, within that splendor, I also saw a dense cloud. Its form was bound by a rainbow, it had lattice-like windows made of lightning garlands, it resembled a heap of blue mountains, and it was adorned with cranes.
तमास्थितश्च भगवान्देव्या सह महाद्युतिः ।
तपसा तेजसा कान्त्या दीप्तया सह भार्यया ॥८॥
8. tamāsthitaśca bhagavāndevyā saha mahādyutiḥ ,
tapasā tejasā kāntyā dīptayā saha bhāryayā.
8. tam āsthitaḥ ca bhagavān devyā saha mahādyutiḥ
tapasā tejasā kāntyā dīptayā saha bhāryayā
8. bhagavān mahādyutiḥ tam āsthitaḥ ca devyā

8. And the glorious Lord, of great splendor, was seated upon that (cloud), together with his radiant wife, their presence characterized by his ascetic power (tapas), his spiritual brilliance, and her luminous beauty.
रराज भगवांस्तत्र देव्या सह महेश्वरः ।
सोमेन सहितः सूर्यो यथा मेघस्थितस्तथा ॥९॥
9. rarāja bhagavāṁstatra devyā saha maheśvaraḥ ,
somena sahitaḥ sūryo yathā meghasthitastathā.

somena sahitaḥ sūryaḥ yathā meghasthitaḥ tathā
9. bhagavān maheśvaraḥ devyā saha tatra rarāja

9. The revered great lord (Maheśvara) shone there with the Goddess, just as the sun, accompanied by the moon, shines when situated amidst clouds.
संहृष्टरोमा कौन्तेय विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः ।
अपश्यं देवसंघानां गतिमार्तिहरं हरम् ॥१०॥
10. saṁhṛṣṭaromā kaunteya vismayotphullalocanaḥ ,
apaśyaṁ devasaṁghānāṁ gatimārtiharaṁ haram.
10. saṃhṛṣṭaromā kaunteya vismayotphullalocanaḥ
apaśyam devasaṃghānām gatim ārtiharam haram
10. kaunteya saṃhṛṣṭaromā vismayotphullalocanaḥ aham
devasaṃghānām ārtiharam haram gatim apaśyam
10. O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), with my hair bristling and my eyes wide open in wonder, I saw Hara (Shiva), who removes distress and is the refuge for the hosts of gods.
किरीटिनं गदिनं शूलपाणिं व्याघ्राजिनं जटिलं दण्डपाणिम् ।
पिनाकिनं वज्रिणं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं शुभाङ्गदं व्यालयज्ञोपवीतम् ॥११॥
11. kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ śūlapāṇiṁ; vyāghrājinaṁ jaṭilaṁ daṇḍapāṇim ,
pinākinaṁ vajriṇaṁ tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭraṁ; śubhāṅgadaṁ vyālayajñopavītam.
11. kirīṭinam gadinam śūlapāṇim
vyāghrājinaṃ jaṭilam daṇḍapāṇim
pinākinam vajriṇam tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭram
śubhāṅgadaṃ vyālayajñopavītam

11. (I saw him) adorned with a crown, holding a mace, carrying a spear in his hand, clad in a tiger skin, with matted hair, holding a staff, bearing the bow Pināka, holding a thunderbolt, having sharp fangs, wearing beautiful armlets, and with a serpent as his sacred thread (yajñopavīta).
दिव्यां मालामुरसानेकवर्णां समुद्वहन्तं गुल्फदेशावलम्बाम् ।
चन्द्रं यथा परिविष्टं ससंध्यं वर्षात्यये तद्वदपश्यमेनम् ॥१२॥
12. divyāṁ mālāmurasānekavarṇāṁ; samudvahantaṁ gulphadeśāvalambām ,
candraṁ yathā pariviṣṭaṁ sasaṁdhyaṁ; varṣātyaye tadvadapaśyamenam.
12. divyām mālām urasā anekavarṇām
samudvahantam gulphadeśāvalambām
candram yathā pariviṣṭam sasaṃdhyaṃ
varṣātyaye tadvat apaśyam enam
12. aham enam urasā anekavarṇām
gulphadeśāvalambām divyām mālām

varṣātyaye sasaṃdhyaṃ pariviṣṭam candram
12. I saw him bearing a divine garland of many colors on his chest, hanging down to his ankles; just as one sees the moon encircled by evening twilight at the end of the rainy season, so I saw him.
प्रमथानां गणैश्चैव समन्तात्परिवारितम् ।
शरदीव सुदुष्प्रेक्ष्यं परिविष्टं दिवाकरम् ॥१३॥
13. pramathānāṁ gaṇaiścaiva samantātparivāritam ,
śaradīva suduṣprekṣyaṁ pariviṣṭaṁ divākaram.
13. pramathānām gaṇaiḥ ca eva samantāt parivāritam
śaradi iva sudusprekṣyam pariviṣṭam divākaram
13. pramathānām gaṇaiḥ ca eva samantāt parivāritam

13. Surrounded on all sides by hordes of Pramathas, he was very difficult to behold, like the sun encompassed (by a halo) in autumn.
एकादश तथा चैनं रुद्राणां वृषवाहनम् ।
अस्तुवन्नियतात्मानः कर्मभिः शुभकर्मिणम् ॥१४॥
14. ekādaśa tathā cainaṁ rudrāṇāṁ vṛṣavāhanam ,
astuvanniyatātmānaḥ karmabhiḥ śubhakarmiṇam.
14. ekādaśa tathā ca enam rudrāṇām vṛṣavāhanam
astuvan niyatātmānaḥ karmabhiḥ śubhakarmaṇam
14. tathā ca ekādaśa rudrāṇām niyatātmānaḥ enam
vṛṣavāhanam śubhakarmaṇam karmabhiḥ astuvan
14. And similarly, the eleven Rudras, who were self-controlled, praised him - the bull-mounted deity, the performer of auspicious deeds - with their actions (karma).
आदित्या वसवः साध्या विश्वेदेवास्तथाश्विनौ ।
विश्वाभिः स्तुतिभिर्देवं विश्वदेवं समस्तुवन् ॥१५॥
15. ādityā vasavaḥ sādhyā viśvedevāstathāśvinau ,
viśvābhiḥ stutibhirdevaṁ viśvadevaṁ samastuvan.
15. ādityāḥ vasavaḥ sādhyāḥ viśvedevāḥ tathā aśvinau
viśvābhiḥ stutibhiḥ devam viśvadevam samastuvam
15. ādityāḥ vasavaḥ sādhyāḥ viśvedevāḥ tathā aśvinau
devam viśvadevam viśvābhiḥ stutibhiḥ samastuvam
15. The Adityas, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Viśvedevas, and the two Aśvins, all praised the universal deity with all their hymns.
शतक्रतुश्च भगवान्विष्णुश्चादितिनन्दनौ ।
ब्रह्मा रथन्तरं साम ईरयन्ति भवान्तिके ॥१६॥
16. śatakratuśca bhagavānviṣṇuścāditinandanau ,
brahmā rathantaraṁ sāma īrayanti bhavāntike.

brahmā rathantaram sāma īrayanti bhavāntike

16. Indra (Śatakratu), and the revered Lord Vishnu - both sons of Aditi - along with Brahmā, chant the Rathantara Sāman in your presence.
योगीश्वराः सुबहवो योगदं पितरं गुरुम् ।
ब्रह्मर्षयश्च ससुतास्तथा देवर्षयश्च वै ॥१७॥
17. yogīśvarāḥ subahavo yogadaṁ pitaraṁ gurum ,
brahmarṣayaśca sasutāstathā devarṣayaśca vai.

brahmarṣayaḥ ca sasutāḥ tathā devarṣayaḥ ca vai
17. yogīśvarāḥ subahavaḥ yogadam pitaram gurum

17. Many great masters of yoga (yogīśvarāḥ), the father and spiritual teacher (guru) who bestows union (yoga), and also the brahmin sages with their sons, and indeed the divine sages.
पृथिवी चान्तरिक्षं च नक्षत्राणि ग्रहास्तथा ।
मासार्धमासा ऋतवो रात्र्यः संवत्सराः क्षणाः ॥१८॥
18. pṛthivī cāntarikṣaṁ ca nakṣatrāṇi grahāstathā ,
māsārdhamāsā ṛtavo rātryaḥ saṁvatsarāḥ kṣaṇāḥ.
18. pṛthivī ca antarikṣam ca nakṣatrāṇi grahāḥ tathā
māsārdhamāsāḥ ṛtavaḥ rātryaḥ saṃvatsarāḥ kṣaṇāḥ
18. pṛthivī ca antarikṣam ca nakṣatrāṇi grahāḥ tathā
māsārdhamāsāḥ ṛtavaḥ rātryaḥ saṃvatsarāḥ kṣaṇāḥ
18. And the earth, and the atmosphere, constellations and planets likewise; months, half-months, seasons, nights, years, and moments.
मुहूर्ताश्च निमेषाश्च तथैव युगपर्ययाः ।
दिव्या राजन्नमस्यन्ति विद्याः सर्वा दिशस्तथा ॥१९॥
19. muhūrtāśca nimeṣāśca tathaiva yugaparyayāḥ ,
divyā rājannamasyanti vidyāḥ sarvā diśastathā.
19. muhūrtāḥ ca nimeṣāḥ ca tathaiva yugaparyayāḥ
divyāḥ rājan namasyanti vidyāḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ tathā

19. And muhūrtas and niṃeṣas, and similarly the cycles of ages (yuga), O King; the divine sciences and all the directions likewise offer obeisance.
सनत्कुमारो वेदाश्च इतिहासास्तथैव च ।
मरीचिरङ्गिरा अत्रिः पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुः ॥२०॥
20. sanatkumāro vedāśca itihāsāstathaiva ca ,
marīciraṅgirā atriḥ pulastyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ.

marīciḥ aṅgirāḥ atriḥ pulastyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ

20. Sanatkumāra, and the Vedas, and likewise the Itihāsas, and Marīci, Aṅgirā, Atri, Pulastya, Pulaha, and Kratu.
मनवः सप्तसोमश्च अथर्वा सबृहस्पतिः ।
भृगुर्दक्षः कश्यपश्च वसिष्ठः काश्य एव च ॥२१॥
21. manavaḥ saptasomaśca atharvā sabṛhaspatiḥ ,
bhṛgurdakṣaḥ kaśyapaśca vasiṣṭhaḥ kāśya eva ca.
21. manavaḥ sapta somaḥ ca atharvā sa bṛhaspatiḥ
bhṛguḥ dakṣaḥ kaśyapaḥ ca vasiṣṭhaḥ kāśyaḥ eva ca
21. manavaḥ sapta somaḥ ca atharvā sa bṛhaspatiḥ
bhṛguḥ dakṣaḥ kaśyapaḥ ca vasiṣṭhaḥ kāśyaḥ eva ca
21. The Manus, the seven, and Soma; Atharvan, along with Bṛhaspati; Bhṛgu, Daksha, and Kaśyapa; and Vasiṣṭha and Kāśya as well.
छन्दांसि दीक्षा यज्ञाश्च दक्षिणाः पावको हविः ।
यज्ञोपगानि द्रव्याणि मूर्तिमन्ति युधिष्ठिर ॥२२॥
22. chandāṁsi dīkṣā yajñāśca dakṣiṇāḥ pāvako haviḥ ,
yajñopagāni dravyāṇi mūrtimanti yudhiṣṭhira.
22. chandāṃsi dīkṣā yajñāḥ ca dakṣiṇāḥ pāvakaḥ haviḥ
yajñopagāni dravyāṇi mūrtimanti yudhiṣṭhira
22. yudhiṣṭhira chandāṃsi dīkṣā yajñāḥ ca dakṣiṇāḥ
pāvakaḥ haviḥ yajñopagāni dravyāṇi mūrtimanti
22. The Vedic hymns, initiations, Vedic rituals (yajña), sacrificial fees, the purifying fire, and oblations – all the substances accessory to the Vedic ritual are personified, O Yudhiṣṭhira.
प्रजानां पतयः सर्वे सरितः पन्नगा नगाः ।
देवानां मातरः सर्वा देवपत्न्यः सकन्यकाः ॥२३॥
23. prajānāṁ patayaḥ sarve saritaḥ pannagā nagāḥ ,
devānāṁ mātaraḥ sarvā devapatnyaḥ sakanyakāḥ.
23. prajānām patayaḥ sarve saritaḥ pannagāḥ nagāḥ
devānām mātaraḥ sarvāḥ devapatnyaḥ sakanyakāḥ
23. prajānām patayaḥ sarve saritaḥ pannagāḥ nagāḥ
devānām mātaraḥ sarvāḥ devapatnyaḥ sakanyakāḥ
23. All the lords of creation (prajā), the rivers, the serpents, and the mountains; all the mothers of the gods and the wives of the gods, along with their daughters.
सहस्राणि मुनीनां च अयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ।
नमस्यन्ति प्रभुं शान्तं पर्वताः सागरा दिशः ॥२४॥
24. sahasrāṇi munīnāṁ ca ayutānyarbudāni ca ,
namasyanti prabhuṁ śāntaṁ parvatāḥ sāgarā diśaḥ.
24. sahasrāṇi munīnām ca ayutāni arbudāni ca
namasyanti prabhum śāntam parvatāḥ sāgarāḥ diśaḥ
24. munīnām sahasrāṇi ca ayutāni ca arbudāni ca
parvatāḥ sāgarāḥ diśaḥ prabhum śāntam namasyanti
24. Thousands of sages (muni), and tens of thousands, and hundreds of millions [more], as well as the mountains, oceans, and directions, all bow down to the peaceful Lord.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव गीतवादित्रकोविदाः ।
दिव्यतानेन गायन्तः स्तुवन्ति भवमद्भुतम् ।
विद्याधरा दानवाश्च गुह्यका राक्षसास्तथा ॥२५॥
25. gandharvāpsarasaścaiva gītavāditrakovidāḥ ,
divyatānena gāyantaḥ stuvanti bhavamadbhutam ,
vidyādharā dānavāśca guhyakā rākṣasāstathā.
25. gandharvāpsarasaḥ ca eva gītavāditrakovidāḥ
divyatānena gāyantaḥ
stuvanti bhavam adbhutam vidyādharāḥ
dānavāḥ ca guhyakāḥ rākṣasāḥ tathā

adbhutam bhavam stuvanti vidyādharāḥ
dānavāḥ ca guhyakāḥ rākṣasāḥ tathā
25. The Gandharvas and Apsarasas, who are experts in song and instrumental music, praise the wondrous Bhava (Śiva), singing with divine melodies. Similarly, the Vidyadharas, Danavas, Guhyakas, and Rakshasas [also praise him].
सर्वाणि चैव भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ।
नमस्यन्ति महाराज वाङ्मनःकर्मभिर्विभुम् ।
पुरस्ताद्विष्ठितः शर्वो ममासीत्त्रिदशेश्वरः ॥२६॥
26. sarvāṇi caiva bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ,
namasyanti mahārāja vāṅmanaḥkarmabhirvibhum ,
purastādviṣṭhitaḥ śarvo mamāsīttridaśeśvaraḥ.
26. sarvāṇi ca eva bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi
carāṇi ca namasyanti mahārāja
vāṅmanaḥkarmabhiḥ vibhum purastāt
viṣṭhitaḥ śarvaḥ mama āsīt tridaśeśvaraḥ
26. mahārāja ca eva sarvāṇi sthāvarāṇi
ca carāṇi bhūtāni vāṅmanaḥkarmabhiḥ
vibhum namasyanti mama purastāt
viṣṭhitaḥ śarvaḥ tridaśeśvaraḥ āsīt
26. And all beings, both stationary and moving, O great king, bow down to the all-pervading lord (vibhu) with their speech, mind, and actions. Lord Sharva, the lord of the gods, was situated before me.
पुरस्ताद्विष्ठितं दृष्ट्वा ममेशानं च भारत ।
सप्रजापतिशक्रान्तं जगन्मामभ्युदैक्षत ॥२७॥
27. purastādviṣṭhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā mameśānaṁ ca bhārata ,
saprajāpatiśakrāntaṁ jaganmāmabhyudaikṣata.
27. purastāt viṣṭhitam dṛṣṭvā mama īśānam ca bhārata
saprajāpatiśakrāntam jagat mām abhyudaiṣata

27. O Bhārata, having seen my lord (īśāna) standing before me, the world, including Prajāpati and Indra, looked up to me.
ईक्षितुं च महादेवं न मे शक्तिरभूत्तदा ।
ततो मामब्रवीद्देवः पश्य कृष्ण वदस्व च ॥२८॥
28. īkṣituṁ ca mahādevaṁ na me śaktirabhūttadā ,
tato māmabravīddevaḥ paśya kṛṣṇa vadasva ca.
28. īkṣitum ca mahādevam na me śaktiḥ abhūt tadā
tataḥ mām abravīt devaḥ paśya kṛṣṇa vadasva ca
28. ca tadā me mahādevam īkṣitum śaktiḥ na abhūt
tataḥ devaḥ mām abravīt kṛṣṇa paśya ca vadasva
28. And then I had no power (śakti) to see Mahādeva (Śiva). Thereupon, the god spoke to me, 'Behold, Kṛṣṇa, and speak!'
शिरसा वन्दिते देवे देवी प्रीता उमाभवत् ।
ततोऽहमस्तुवं स्थाणुं स्तुतं ब्रह्मादिभिः सुरैः ॥२९॥
29. śirasā vandite deve devī prītā umābhavat ,
tato'hamastuvaṁ sthāṇuṁ stutaṁ brahmādibhiḥ suraiḥ.

aham astuvam sthāṇum stutam brahmādibhiḥ suraiḥ

29. When the god was worshipped with a bowed head, the goddess Umā became pleased. Then, I praised Sthāṇu, who is celebrated by Brahmā and other gods.
नमोऽस्तु ते शाश्वत सर्वयोने ब्रह्माधिपं त्वामृषयो वदन्ति ।
तपश्च सत्त्वं च रजस्तमश्च त्वामेव सत्यं च वदन्ति सन्तः ॥३०॥
30. namo'stu te śāśvata sarvayone; brahmādhipaṁ tvāmṛṣayo vadanti ,
tapaśca sattvaṁ ca rajastamaśca; tvāmeva satyaṁ ca vadanti santaḥ.
30. namaḥ astu te śāśvata sarvayoṇe
brahmādhipam tvām ṛṣayaḥ vadanti
tapas ca sattvam ca rajas tamas ca
tvam eva satyam ca vadanti santaḥ
30. śāśvata sarvayoṇe te namaḥ astu
ṛṣayaḥ tvām brahmādhipam vadanti santaḥ
ca tvām eva tapas ca sattvam ca
rajas ca tamas ca satyam ca vadanti
30. Salutations to you, O Eternal One, source of all! The sages declare you to be the supreme lord of Brahmā. The wise also speak of you as austerity (tapas), goodness, passion, and darkness, and indeed, as truth.
त्वं वै ब्रह्मा च रुद्रश्च वरुणोऽग्निर्मनुर्भवः ।
धाता त्वष्टा विधाता च त्वं प्रभुः सर्वतोमुखः ॥३१॥
31. tvaṁ vai brahmā ca rudraśca varuṇo'gnirmanurbhavaḥ ,
dhātā tvaṣṭā vidhātā ca tvaṁ prabhuḥ sarvatomukhaḥ.
31. tvam vai brahmā ca rudraḥ ca varuṇaḥ agniḥ manuḥ bhavaḥ
dhātā tvaṣṭā vidhātā ca tvam prabhuḥ sarvatomukhaḥ
31. tvam vai brahmā ca rudraḥ ca varuṇaḥ agniḥ manuḥ bhavaḥ
tvam dhātā tvaṣṭā vidhātā ca tvam prabhuḥ sarvatomukhaḥ
31. Indeed, you are Brahmā, Rudra, Varuṇa, Agni, Manu, and Bhava. You are Dhātā, Tvaṣṭā, and Vidhātā, and you are the all-pervading Lord (sarvatomukha).
त्वत्तो जातानि भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ।
त्वमादिः सर्वभूतानां संहारश्च त्वमेव हि ॥३२॥
32. tvatto jātāni bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ,
tvamādiḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ saṁhāraśca tvameva hi.
32. tvattaḥ jātāni bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca
tvam ādiḥ sarvabhūtānām saṃhāraḥ ca tvam eva hi
32. tvattaḥ sthāvarāṇi ca carāṇi bhūtāni jātāni tvam
sarvabhūtānām ādiḥ ca tvam eva hi saṃhāraḥ ca
32. From you are born all beings, both stationary and moving. You are the origin of all creatures, and you are indeed their dissolution (saṃhāra) as well.
ये चेन्द्रियार्थाश्च मनश्च कृत्स्नं ये वायवः सप्त तथैव चाग्निः ।
ये वा दिविस्था देवताश्चापि पुंसां तस्मात्परं त्वामृषयो वदन्ति ॥३३॥
33. ye cendriyārthāśca manaśca kṛtsnaṁ; ye vāyavaḥ sapta tathaiva cāgniḥ ,
ye vā divisthā devatāścāpi puṁsāṁ; tasmātparaṁ tvāmṛṣayo vadanti.
33. ye ca indriyārthāḥ ca manaḥ ca kṛtsnam
ye vāyavaḥ sapta tathā eva ca agniḥ
ye vā divisthāḥ devatāḥ ca api
puṃsām tasmāt param tvām ṛṣayaḥ vadanti
33. ṛṣayaḥ tasmāt tvām indriyārthāḥ ca
manaḥ ca kṛtsnam ye ca sapta vāyavaḥ
tathā eva ca agniḥ ye vā divisthāḥ
devatāḥ ca api puṃsām param vadanti
33. And all the objects of the senses, and the mind completely; and the seven vital breaths, and similarly fire; and also those deities residing in heaven for human beings – therefore, the sages declare You to be beyond all of them.
वेदा यज्ञाश्च सोमश्च दक्षिणा पावको हविः ।
यज्ञोपगं च यत्किंचिद्भगवांस्तदसंशयम् ॥३४॥
34. vedā yajñāśca somaśca dakṣiṇā pāvako haviḥ ,
yajñopagaṁ ca yatkiṁcidbhagavāṁstadasaṁśayam.
34. vedāḥ yajñāḥ ca somaḥ ca dakṣiṇā pāvakaḥ haviḥ
yajñopagam ca yat kiṃcit bhagavan tat asaṃśayam
34. bhagavan vedāḥ yajñāḥ ca somaḥ ca dakṣiṇā pāvakaḥ
haviḥ ca yat kiṃcit yajñopagam tat asaṃśayam
34. The Vedas, and the Vedic rituals (yajñas), and the soma (plant/juice), and the sacrificial fees, and the fire, and the oblation; and whatever else serves as an accessory to the Vedic ritual (yajña) – O Lord, all that is undoubtedly You.
इष्टं दत्तमधीतं च व्रतानि नियमाश्च ये ।
ह्रीः कीर्तिः श्रीर्द्युतिस्तुष्टिः सिद्धिश्चैव त्वदर्पणा ॥३५॥
35. iṣṭaṁ dattamadhītaṁ ca vratāni niyamāśca ye ,
hrīḥ kīrtiḥ śrīrdyutistuṣṭiḥ siddhiścaiva tvadarpaṇā.
35. iṣṭam dattam adhītam ca vratāni niyamāḥ ca ye hrīḥ
kīrtiḥ śrīḥ dyutiḥ tuṣṭiḥ siddhiḥ ca eva tvat arpaṇā
35. iṣṭam dattam adhītam ca vratāni ca niyamāḥ ye hrīḥ
kīrtiḥ śrīḥ dyutiḥ tuṣṭiḥ ca siddhiḥ eva tvat arpaṇā
35. Sacrificial rites (iṣṭa), gifts (datta), study (adhīta), and vows, and spiritual observances (niyamas); and modesty, fame, prosperity, radiance, contentment, and spiritual accomplishment (siddhi) – all these are indeed offered to You.
कामः क्रोधो भयं लोभो मदः स्तम्भोऽथ मत्सरः ।
आधयो व्याधयश्चैव भगवंस्तनयास्तव ॥३६॥
36. kāmaḥ krodho bhayaṁ lobho madaḥ stambho'tha matsaraḥ ,
ādhayo vyādhayaścaiva bhagavaṁstanayāstava.
36. kāmaḥ krodhaḥ bhayam lobhaḥ madaḥ stambhaḥ atha
matsaraḥ ādhayaḥ vyādhayaḥ ca eva bhagavan tanayāḥ tava
36. bhagavan kāmaḥ krodhaḥ bhayam lobhaḥ madaḥ stambhaḥ
atha matsaraḥ ca eva ādhayaḥ vyādhayaḥ tava tanayāḥ
36. Desire, anger, fear, greed, pride, stubbornness, and then envy; mental anguish and physical diseases are also, O Lord, Your children.
कृतिर्विकारः प्रलयः प्रधानं प्रभवोऽव्ययः ।
मनसः परमा योनिः स्वभावश्चापि शाश्वतः ।
अव्यक्तः पावन विभो सहस्रांशो हिरण्मयः ॥३७॥
37. kṛtirvikāraḥ pralayaḥ pradhānaṁ prabhavo'vyayaḥ ,
manasaḥ paramā yoniḥ svabhāvaścāpi śāśvataḥ ,
avyaktaḥ pāvana vibho sahasrāṁśo hiraṇmayaḥ.
37. kṛtiḥ vikāraḥ pralayaḥ pradhānam
prabhavaḥ avyayaḥ manasaḥ paramā yoniḥ
svabhāvaḥ ca api śāśvataḥ avyaktaḥ
pāvana vibho sahasrāṃśo hiraṇmayaḥ
37. vibho pāvana sahasrāṃśo kṛtiḥ vikāraḥ
pralayaḥ pradhānam prabhavaḥ
avyayaḥ manasaḥ paramā yoniḥ ca api
śāśvataḥ svabhāvaḥ avyaktaḥ hiraṇmayaḥ
37. You are creation, transformation, dissolution, the fundamental (prakṛti) cause, the origin, and the imperishable. You are the supreme source of the mind, and also the eternal intrinsic nature. O unmanifest, purifier, all-pervading one, thousand-rayed one, golden one!
आदिर्गुणानां सर्वेषां भवान्वै जीवनाश्रयः ।
महानात्मा मतिर्ब्रह्मा विश्वः शंभुः स्वयंभुवः ॥३८॥
38. ādirguṇānāṁ sarveṣāṁ bhavānvai jīvanāśrayaḥ ,
mahānātmā matirbrahmā viśvaḥ śaṁbhuḥ svayaṁbhuvaḥ.
38. ādiḥ guṇānām sarveṣām bhavān vai jīvanāśrayaḥ
mahān ātmā matiḥ brahmā viśvaḥ śaṃbhuḥ svayambhuvaḥ
38. bhavān vai sarveṣām guṇānām ādiḥ jīvanāśrayaḥ
mahān ātmā matiḥ brahmā viśvaḥ śaṃbhuḥ svayambhuvaḥ
38. You are indeed the origin of all qualities, and the support of life. You are the great self (ātman), the intellect, Brahmā (brahman), the universe, Śambhu, and the self-existent.
बुद्धिः प्रज्ञोपलब्धिश्च संवित्ख्यातिर्धृतिः स्मृतिः ।
पर्यायवाचकैः शब्दैर्महानात्मा विभाव्यसे ॥३९॥
39. buddhiḥ prajñopalabdhiśca saṁvitkhyātirdhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ ,
paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdairmahānātmā vibhāvyase.
39. buddhiḥ prajñā upalabdhiḥ ca saṃvit khyātiḥ dhṛtiḥ
smṛtiḥ paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdaiḥ mahān ātmā vibhāvyase
39. mahān ātmā buddhiḥ prajñā upalabdhiḥ ca saṃvit khyātiḥ
dhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdaiḥ vibhāvyase
39. You, O great self (ātman), are understood by synonymous words like intellect, wisdom, cognition, consciousness, apprehension, fortitude, and memory.
त्वां बुद्ध्वा ब्राह्मणो विद्वान्न प्रमोहं निगच्छति ।
हृदयं सर्वभूतानां क्षेत्रज्ञस्त्वमृषिष्टुतः ॥४०॥
40. tvāṁ buddhvā brāhmaṇo vidvānna pramohaṁ nigacchati ,
hṛdayaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ kṣetrajñastvamṛṣiṣṭutaḥ.
40. tvām buddhvā brāhmaṇaḥ vidvān na pramoham nigacchati
hṛdayam sarvabhūtānām kṣetrajñaḥ tvam ṛṣistuṭaḥ
40. vidvān brāhmaṇaḥ tvām buddhvā pramoham na nigacchati
tvam sarvabhūtānām hṛdayam kṣetrajñaḥ ṛṣistuṭaḥ
40. Having understood you, a learned Brahmin does not fall into great delusion. You are the heart of all beings, the knower of the field (kṣetrajña), and praised by sages.
सर्वतःपाणिपादस्त्वं सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखः ।
सर्वतःश्रुतिमाँल्लोके सर्वमावृत्य तिष्ठसि ॥४१॥
41. sarvataḥpāṇipādastvaṁ sarvatokṣiśiromukhaḥ ,
sarvataḥśrutimāँlloke sarvamāvṛtya tiṣṭhasi.
41. sarvataḥpāṇipādaḥ tvam sarvataḥakṣiśiromukhaḥ
sarvataḥśrutimān loke sarvam āvṛtya tiṣṭhasi
41. You have hands and feet everywhere, eyes, heads, and faces everywhere. You have ears everywhere in the world, and encompassing everything, You abide.
फलं त्वमसि तिग्मांशो निमेषादिषु कर्मसु ।
त्वं वै प्रभार्चिः पुरुषः सर्वस्य हृदि संस्थितः ।
अणिमा लघिमा प्राप्तिरीशानो ज्योतिरव्ययः ॥४२॥
42. phalaṁ tvamasi tigmāṁśo nimeṣādiṣu karmasu ,
tvaṁ vai prabhārciḥ puruṣaḥ sarvasya hṛdi saṁsthitaḥ ,
aṇimā laghimā prāptirīśāno jyotiravyayaḥ.
42. phalam tvam asi tigmāṃśo nimeṣaādiṣu
karmasu tvam vai prabhā arciḥ
puruṣaḥ sarvasya hṛdi saṃsthitaḥ aṇimā
laghimā prāptiḥ īśānaḥ jyotiḥ avyayaḥ
42. O blazing-rayed one, You are indeed the outcome of all actions, from the smallest wink upwards. You are the effulgent light, the supreme cosmic person (puruṣa) residing in the heart of all. You are also the divine powers of subtleness (aṇimā), lightness (laghimā), attainment (prāpti), the ruler (īśāna), and the imperishable light.
त्वयि बुद्धिर्मतिर्लोकाः प्रपन्नाः संश्रिताश्च ये ।
ध्यानिनो नित्ययोगाश्च सत्यसंधा जितेन्द्रियाः ॥४३॥
43. tvayi buddhirmatirlokāḥ prapannāḥ saṁśritāśca ye ,
dhyānino nityayogāśca satyasaṁdhā jitendriyāḥ.
43. tvayi buddhiḥ matiḥ lokāḥ prapannāḥ saṃśritāḥ ca
ye dhyāninaḥ nityayogāḥ ca satyasaṃdhā jitendriyāḥ
43. In You reside intellect, understanding, and the worlds. Also (in You reside) those who have taken refuge and those who are dependent. (In You are also) the meditators (dhyānin) and those constantly engaged in spiritual discipline (yoga), those whose resolve is truth, and those who have conquered their senses.
यस्त्वां ध्रुवं वेदयते गुहाशयं प्रभुं पुराणं पुरुषं विश्वरूपम् ।
हिरण्मयं बुद्धिमतां परां गतिं स बुद्धिमान्बुद्धिमतीत्य तिष्ठति ॥४४॥
44. yastvāṁ dhruvaṁ vedayate guhāśayaṁ; prabhuṁ purāṇaṁ puruṣaṁ viśvarūpam ,
hiraṇmayaṁ buddhimatāṁ parāṁ gatiṁ; sa buddhimānbuddhimatītya tiṣṭhati.
44. yaḥ tvām dhruvam vedayate guhāśayam
prabhum purāṇam puruṣam viśvarūpam
hiraṇmayam buddhimatām parām gatim
sa buddhimān buddhim atītya tiṣṭhati
44. Whoever knows You as the immutable, dwelling in the heart, the lord, the ancient (purāṇa) cosmic person (puruṣa) of universal form, the golden one, and the supreme goal for the wise - that intelligent person transcends ordinary intellect and abides (in the ultimate reality).
विदित्वा सप्त सूक्ष्माणि षडङ्गं त्वां च मूर्तितः ।
प्रधानविधियोगस्थस्त्वामेव विशते बुधः ॥४५॥
45. viditvā sapta sūkṣmāṇi ṣaḍaṅgaṁ tvāṁ ca mūrtitaḥ ,
pradhānavidhiyogasthastvāmeva viśate budhaḥ.
45. viditvā sapta sūkṣmāṇi ṣaḍaṅgam tvām ca mūrtitaḥ
pradhānavidhiyogasthaḥ tvām eva viśate budhaḥ
45. budhaḥ sapta sūkṣmāṇi ṣaḍaṅgam ca tvām mūrtitaḥ
viditvā pradhānavidhiyogasthaḥ tvām eva viśate
45. A wise person (budha), understanding the seven subtle elements and Your manifest form with its six constituents, and being established in the principal method of spiritual discipline (yoga), attains You alone.
एवमुक्ते मया पार्थ भवे चार्तिविनाशने ।
चराचरं जगत्सर्वं सिंहनादमथाकरोत् ॥४६॥
46. evamukte mayā pārtha bhave cārtivināśane ,
carācaraṁ jagatsarvaṁ siṁhanādamathākarot.
46. evam ukte mayā pārtha bhave ca ārtivināśane
carācaram jagat sarvam siṃhanādam atha akarot
46. pārtha mayā evam ukte carācaram sarvam jagat
bhave ca ārtivināśane atha siṃhanādam akarot
46. O Pārtha, when I had thus spoken, the entire animate and inanimate world, in this realm of becoming which is a destroyer of distress, then let out a lion's roar.
सविप्रसंघाश्च सुरासुराश्च नागाः पिशाचाः पितरो वयांसि ।
रक्षोगणा भूतगणाश्च सर्वे महर्षयश्चैव तथा प्रणेमुः ॥४७॥
47. saviprasaṁghāśca surāsurāśca; nāgāḥ piśācāḥ pitaro vayāṁsi ,
rakṣogaṇā bhūtagaṇāśca sarve; maharṣayaścaiva tathā praṇemuḥ.
47. sa-vipra-saṃghāḥ ca sura-asurāḥ ca
nāgāḥ piśācāḥ pitaraḥ vayāṃsi
rakṣas-gaṇāḥ bhūta-gaṇāḥ ca sarve
mahā-ṛṣayaḥ ca eva tathā praṇemuḥ
47. saviprasaṃghāḥ ca surāsurāḥ ca
nāgāḥ piśācāḥ pitaraḥ vayāṃsi
rakṣogaṇāḥ ca bhūtaganāḥ sarve ca
maharṣayaḥ eva tathā praṇemuḥ
47. And groups of Brahmins, and gods and demons, Nāgas, Piśācas, ancestors, birds, all the groups of Rākṣasas and groups of spirits, and indeed the great sages, thus prostrated themselves.
मम मूर्ध्नि च दिव्यानां कुसुमानां सुगन्धिनाम् ।
राशयो निपतन्ति स्म वायुश्च सुसुखो ववौ ॥४८॥
48. mama mūrdhni ca divyānāṁ kusumānāṁ sugandhinām ,
rāśayo nipatanti sma vāyuśca susukho vavau.
48. mama mūrdhni ca divyānām kusumānām sugandhinām
rāśayaḥ nipatanti sma vāyuḥ ca susukhaḥ vavau
48. ca mama mūrdhni divyānām sugandhinām kusumānām
rāśayaḥ nipatanti sma ca susukhaḥ vāyuḥ vavau
48. And on my head, heaps of divine, fragrant flowers were falling, and a very pleasant wind blew.
निरीक्ष्य भगवान्देवीमुमां मां च जगद्धितः ।
शतक्रतुं चाभिवीक्ष्य स्वयं मामाह शंकरः ॥४९॥
49. nirīkṣya bhagavāndevīmumāṁ māṁ ca jagaddhitaḥ ,
śatakratuṁ cābhivīkṣya svayaṁ māmāha śaṁkaraḥ.
49. nirīkṣya bhagavān devīm umām mām ca jagaddhitaḥ
śatakratum ca abhivīkṣya svayam mām āha śaṃkaraḥ
49. jagaddhitaḥ bhagavān śaṃkaraḥ devīm umām ca mām ca
nirīkṣya śatakratum ca abhivīkṣya svayam mām āha
49. The revered Lord Shankara (śaṃkara), who works for the welfare of the world, having seen the goddess Uma (umā) and me, and also having observed Indra (śatakratu), himself spoke to me.
विद्मः कृष्ण परां भक्तिमस्मासु तव शत्रुहन् ।
क्रियतामात्मनः श्रेयः प्रीतिर्हि परमा त्वयि ॥५०॥
50. vidmaḥ kṛṣṇa parāṁ bhaktimasmāsu tava śatruhan ,
kriyatāmātmanaḥ śreyaḥ prītirhi paramā tvayi.
50. vidmaḥ kṛṣṇa parām bhaktim asmāsu tava śatruhant
kriyatām ātmanaḥ śreyaḥ prītiḥ hi paramā tvayi
50. kṛṣṇa śatruhant tava parām bhaktim asmāsu vidmaḥ
ātmanaḥ śreyaḥ kriyatām hi tvayi paramā prītiḥ
50. O Krishna, destroyer of enemies, we know your supreme devotion (bhakti) to us. May your own welfare (śreyas) be accomplished, for our supreme love is indeed in you.
वृणीष्वाष्टौ वरान्कृष्ण दातास्मि तव सत्तम ।
ब्रूहि यादवशार्दूल यानिच्छसि सुदुर्लभान् ॥५१॥
51. vṛṇīṣvāṣṭau varānkṛṣṇa dātāsmi tava sattama ,
brūhi yādavaśārdūla yānicchasi sudurlabhān.
51. vṛṇīṣva aṣṭau varān kṛṣṇa dātā asmi tava sattama
brūhi yādavaśārdūla yān icchasi sudurlabhān
51. kṛṣṇa sattama aṣṭau varān vṛṇīṣva tava dātā asmi
yādavaśārdūla yān sudurlabhān icchasi brūhi
51. O Krishna, O most excellent one (sattama), choose eight boons; I will grant them to you. O best of the Yadavas (yādavaśārdūla), tell me which extremely rare ones you desire.
