मध्याह्ने तु महाराज संग्रामः समपद्यत ।
लोकक्षयकरो रौद्रो भीष्मस्य सह सोमकैः ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: "But, O great King, at midday, a dreadful battle causing the destruction of people took place between Bhishma and the Somakas."
गाङ्गेयो रथिनां श्रेष्ठः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ।
व्यधमन्निशितैर्बाणैः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥२॥
2. gāṅgeyo rathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm ,
vyadhamanniśitairbāṇaiḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.

2. Gaṅgeya (Bhīṣma), the best among charioteers, scattered the army of the Pāṇḍavas with sharp arrows, by hundreds and then by thousands.
संममर्द च तत्सैन्यं पिता देवव्रतस्तव ।
धान्यानामिव लूनानां प्रकरं गोगणा इव ॥३॥
3. saṁmamarda ca tatsainyaṁ pitā devavratastava ,
dhānyānāmiva lūnānāṁ prakaraṁ gogaṇā iva.
3. sammamarda ca tat sainyam pitā devavrataḥ tava
dhānyānām iva lūnānām prakaram gogaṇāḥ iva
3. tava pitā devavrataḥ ca tat sainyam gogaṇāḥ

3. And your father, Devavrata (Bhīṣma), crushed that army just as herds of cattle crush a pile of harvested grain.
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च विराटो द्रुपदस्तथा ।
भीष्ममासाद्य समरे शरैर्जघ्नुर्महारथम् ॥४॥
4. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca virāṭo drupadastathā ,
bhīṣmamāsādya samare śarairjaghnurmahāratham.

4. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, Virāṭa, and Drupada, having confronted Bhīṣma in battle, struck the great charioteer with arrows.
धृष्टद्युम्नं ततो विद्ध्वा विराटं च त्रिभिः शरैः ।
द्रुपदस्य च नाराचं प्रेषयामास भारत ॥५॥
5. dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ tato viddhvā virāṭaṁ ca tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
drupadasya ca nārācaṁ preṣayāmāsa bhārata.

5. Then, having pierced Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Virāṭa with three arrows (each), O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), (Bhīṣma) also dispatched an iron arrow to Drupada.
तेन विद्धा महेष्वासा भीष्मेणामित्रकर्शिना ।
चुक्रुधुः समरे राजन्पादस्पृष्टा इवोरगाः ॥६॥
6. tena viddhā maheṣvāsā bhīṣmeṇāmitrakarśinā ,
cukrudhuḥ samare rājanpādaspṛṣṭā ivoragāḥ.
6. tena viddhāḥ maheṣvāsāḥ bhīṣmeṇa amitrakarśinā
cukrudhuḥ samare rājan pādaspr̥ṣṭāḥ iva uragāḥ

6. O King, those great archers, struck by Bhishma, the vanquisher of foes, became enraged in battle, like serpents disturbed by a foot.
शिखण्डी तं च विव्याध भरतानां पितामहम् ।
स्त्रीमयं मनसा ध्यात्वा नास्मै प्राहरदच्युतः ॥७॥
7. śikhaṇḍī taṁ ca vivyādha bharatānāṁ pitāmaham ,
strīmayaṁ manasā dhyātvā nāsmai prāharadacyutaḥ.

strīmayam manasā dhyātvā na asmai prāharat acyutaḥ

7. Shikhandi struck the grandfather of the Bharatas. However, Bhishma (acyuta), reflecting in his mind on Shikhandi's female nature (strīmaya), did not retaliate against him.
धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु समरे क्रोधादग्निरिव ज्वलन् ।
पितामहं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत् ॥८॥
8. dhṛṣṭadyumnastu samare krodhādagniriva jvalan ,
pitāmahaṁ tribhirbāṇairbāhvorurasi cārpayat.

8. But Dhristadyumna, burning with rage like fire in battle, discharged three arrows into the grandfather's (Bhishma's) arms and chest.
द्रुपदः पञ्चविंशत्या विराटो दशभिः शरैः ।
शिखण्डी पञ्चविंशत्या भीष्मं विव्याध सायकैः ॥९॥
9. drupadaḥ pañcaviṁśatyā virāṭo daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
śikhaṇḍī pañcaviṁśatyā bhīṣmaṁ vivyādha sāyakaiḥ.

9. Drupada struck Bhishma with twenty-five (arrows), Virata with ten arrows, and Shikhandi with twenty-five arrows.
सोऽतिविद्धो महाराज भीष्मः संख्ये महात्मभिः ।
वसन्ते पुष्पशबलो रक्ताशोक इवाबभौ ॥१०॥
10. so'tividdho mahārāja bhīṣmaḥ saṁkhye mahātmabhiḥ ,
vasante puṣpaśabalo raktāśoka ivābabhau.
10. saḥ atividdhaḥ mahārāja bhīṣmaḥ saṃkhye mahātmabhiḥ
vasante puṣpaśabalaḥ raktāśokaḥ iva ābabhau

10. O great king, Bhishma, deeply pierced in battle by the great warriors, appeared resplendent like a red Ashoka tree variegated with flowers in spring.
तान्प्रत्यविध्यद्गाङ्गेयस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः ।
द्रुपदस्य च भल्लेन धनुश्चिच्छेद मारिष ॥११॥
11. tānpratyavidhyadgāṅgeyastribhistribhirajihmagaiḥ ,
drupadasya ca bhallena dhanuściccheda māriṣa.
11. tān prati avidyat gāṅgeyaḥ tribhiḥ tribhiḥ ajihmagaiḥ
drupadasya ca bhallena dhanuḥ ciccheda māriṣa
11. māriṣa gāṅgeyaḥ tān tribhiḥ tribhiḥ ajihmagaiḥ
prati avidyat ca bhallena drupadasya dhanuḥ ciccheda
11. O respected one, Bhishma, the son of Ganga, pierced them in return with three straight-flying arrows each, and with a broad-headed arrow, he cut Drupada’s bow.
सोऽन्यत्कार्मुकमादाय भीष्मं विव्याध पञ्चभिः ।
सारथिं च त्रिभिर्बाणैः सुशितै रणमूर्धनि ॥१२॥
12. so'nyatkārmukamādāya bhīṣmaṁ vivyādha pañcabhiḥ ,
sārathiṁ ca tribhirbāṇaiḥ suśitai raṇamūrdhani.
12. saḥ anyat kārmukam ādāya bhīṣmam vivyādha pañcabhiḥ
sārathim ca tribhiḥ bāṇaiḥ suśitaiḥ raṇamūrdhani

12. Having seized another bow, Drupada pierced Bhishma with five arrows, and his charioteer with three very sharp arrows, right at the forefront of the battle.
ततो भीमो महाराज द्रौपद्याः पञ्च चात्मजाः ।
केकया भ्रातरः पञ्च सात्यकिश्चैव सात्वतः ॥१३॥
13. tato bhīmo mahārāja draupadyāḥ pañca cātmajāḥ ,
kekayā bhrātaraḥ pañca sātyakiścaiva sātvataḥ.
13. tataḥ bhīmaḥ mahārāja draupadyāḥ pañca ca ātmajāḥ
kekayāḥ bhrātaraḥ pañca sātyakiḥ ca eva sātvataḥ

13. O great king, then Bhima, and the five sons of Draupadi, as well as the five Kekaya brothers, and indeed Satyaki, the descendant of Satvata (Satyaki).
अभ्यद्रवन्त गाङ्गेयं युधिष्ठिरहितेप्सया ।
रिरक्षिषन्तः पाञ्चाल्यं धृष्टद्युम्नमुखान्रणे ॥१४॥
14. abhyadravanta gāṅgeyaṁ yudhiṣṭhirahitepsayā ,
rirakṣiṣantaḥ pāñcālyaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhānraṇe.

rirakṣiṣantaḥ pāñcālyam dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhān raṇe

14. Desiring Yudhishthira's welfare, and wishing to protect Dhrishtadyumna and other Pancala warriors, they rushed towards Bhishma in battle.
तथैव तावकाः सर्वे भीष्मरक्षार्थमुद्यताः ।
प्रत्युद्ययुः पाण्डुसेनां सहसैन्या नराधिप ॥१५॥
15. tathaiva tāvakāḥ sarve bhīṣmarakṣārthamudyatāḥ ,
pratyudyayuḥ pāṇḍusenāṁ sahasainyā narādhipa.
15. tathaiva tāvakāḥ sarve bhīṣmarakṣārtham udyatāḥ
pratyudyayuḥ pāṇḍusenām sahasainyāḥ narādhipa

15. Likewise, O King, all your warriors, along with their armies, were ready for Bhishma's protection and advanced against the Pandava forces.
तत्रासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं तव तेषां च संकुलम् ।
नराश्वरथनागानां यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम् ॥१६॥
16. tatrāsītsumahadyuddhaṁ tava teṣāṁ ca saṁkulam ,
narāśvarathanāgānāṁ yamarāṣṭravivardhanam.
16. tatra āsīt sumahat yuddham tava teṣām ca saṃkulam
narāśvarathanāgānām yamarāṣṭravivardhanam
16. tatra tava teṣām ca sumahat saṃkulam yuddham

16. There, a very great and tumultuous battle took place between your forces and theirs, one that expanded the realm of Yama (god of death) for men, horses, chariots, and elephants.
रथी रथिनमासाद्य प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम् ।
तथेतरान्समासाद्य नरनागाश्वसादिनः ॥१७॥
17. rathī rathinamāsādya prāhiṇodyamasādanam ,
tathetarānsamāsādya naranāgāśvasādinaḥ.

tathā itarān samāsādya naranāgāśvasādinaḥ

17. A charioteer, having engaged another charioteer, sent him to the abode of Yama. Similarly, having engaged other infantrymen, elephant riders, and cavalrymen, he also sent them to Yama's abode.
अनयन्परलोकाय शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
अस्त्रैश्च विविधैर्घोरैस्तत्र तत्र विशां पते ॥१८॥
18. anayanparalokāya śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
astraiśca vividhairghoraistatra tatra viśāṁ pate.
18. anayan paralokāya śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ astraiḥ
ca vividhaiḥ ghoraiḥ tatra tatra viśām pate
18. viśām pate tatra tatra anayan paralokāya śaraiḥ
sannataparvabhiḥ ca astraiḥ vividhaiḥ ghoraiḥ
18. O lord of the people, they sent [the enemies] to the other world (paraloka) here and there with well-aimed arrows and various terrible missiles.
रथाश्च रथिभिर्हीना हतसारथयस्तथा ।
विप्रद्रुताश्वाः समरे दिशो जग्मुः समन्ततः ॥१९॥
19. rathāśca rathibhirhīnā hatasārathayastathā ,
vipradrutāśvāḥ samare diśo jagmuḥ samantataḥ.
19. rathāḥ ca rathibhiḥ hīnāḥ hatasārathayaḥ tathā
vipradrutāśvāḥ samare diśaḥ jagmuḥ samantataḥ
19. rathāḥ ca rathibhiḥ hīnāḥ tathā hatasārathayaḥ
vipradrutāśvāḥ samare diśaḥ samantataḥ jagmuḥ
19. And chariots, devoid of their charioteers and whose drivers had been slain, with their horses scattered and fleeing, went in all directions throughout the battle.
मर्दमाना नरान्राजन्हयांश्च सुबहून्रणे ।
वातायमाना दृश्यन्ते गन्धर्वनगरोपमाः ॥२०॥
20. mardamānā narānrājanhayāṁśca subahūnraṇe ,
vātāyamānā dṛśyante gandharvanagaropamāḥ.
20. mardamānāḥ narān rājan hayān ca subahūn raṇe
vātāyamānāḥ dṛśyante gandharvanagaropamāḥ
20. rājan raṇe subahūn narān ca hayān mardamānāḥ

20. O King, crushing many men and horses in the battle, [the chariots] were seen moving like the wind, resembling cities of Gandharvas.
रथिनश्च रथैर्हीना वर्मिणस्तेजसा युताः ।
कुण्डलोष्णीषिणः सर्वे निष्काङ्गदविभूषिताः ॥२१॥
21. rathinaśca rathairhīnā varmiṇastejasā yutāḥ ,
kuṇḍaloṣṇīṣiṇaḥ sarve niṣkāṅgadavibhūṣitāḥ.
21. rathinaḥ ca rathaiḥ hīnāḥ varmiṇaḥ tejasā yutāḥ
kuṇḍaloṣṇīṣiṇaḥ sarve niṣkāṅgadavibhūṣitāḥ
21. ca sarve rathinaḥ rathaiḥ hīnāḥ varmiṇaḥ tejasā
yutāḥ kuṇḍaloṣṇīṣiṇaḥ niṣkāṅgadavibhūṣitāḥ
21. And the charioteers, though deprived of their chariots, were armored and endowed with brilliance; all of them wore earrings and turbans and were adorned with necklaces and armlets.
देवपुत्रसमा रूपे शौर्ये शक्रसमा युधि ।
ऋद्ध्या वैश्रवणं चाति नयेन च बृहस्पतिम् ॥२२॥
22. devaputrasamā rūpe śaurye śakrasamā yudhi ,
ṛddhyā vaiśravaṇaṁ cāti nayena ca bṛhaspatim.

ṛddhyā vaiśravaṇam ca ati nayena ca bṛhaspatim
22. rūpe devaputrasamā śaurye yudhi śakrasamā

22. They were equal to the sons of gods in beauty, equal to Indra in valor on the battlefield, surpassing Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera) in prosperity, and Bṛhaspati in statesmanship.
सर्वलोकेश्वराः शूरास्तत्र तत्र विशां पते ।
विप्रद्रुता व्यदृश्यन्त प्राकृता इव मानवाः ॥२३॥
23. sarvalokeśvarāḥ śūrāstatra tatra viśāṁ pate ,
vipradrutā vyadṛśyanta prākṛtā iva mānavāḥ.
23. sarvalokeśvarāḥ śūrāḥ tatra tatra viśām pate
vipradrutāḥ vyadṛśyanta prākṛtāḥ iva mānavāḥ
23. viśām pate sarvalokeśvarāḥ śūrāḥ tatra tatra
prākṛtāḥ mānavāḥ iva vipradrutāḥ vyadṛśyanta
23. O lord of the people (viśām pate), those heroes, who were lords of all worlds, were seen fleeing everywhere like common men.
दन्तिनश्च नरश्रेष्ठ विहीना वरसादिभिः ।
मृद्नन्तः स्वान्यनीकानि संपेतुः सर्वशब्दगाः ॥२४॥
24. dantinaśca naraśreṣṭha vihīnā varasādibhiḥ ,
mṛdnantaḥ svānyanīkāni saṁpetuḥ sarvaśabdagāḥ.
24. dantinaḥ ca naraśreṣṭha vihīnāḥ varasādibhiḥ
mṛdnantaḥ svāni anīkāni sampetuḥ sarvaśabdagāḥ
24. naraśreṣṭha dantinaḥ ca varasādibhiḥ vihīnāḥ
svāni anīkāni mṛdnantaḥ sarvaśabdagāḥ sampetuḥ
24. And, O best of men (naraśreṣṭha), the elephants, abandoned by their excellent riders, stampeded everywhere, trampling their own armies and rushing in all directions at every sound.
वर्मभिश्चामरैश्छत्रैः पताकाभिश्च मारिष ।
कक्ष्याभिरथ तोत्त्रैश्च घण्टाभिस्तोमरैस्तथा ॥२५॥
25. varmabhiścāmaraiśchatraiḥ patākābhiśca māriṣa ,
kakṣyābhiratha tottraiśca ghaṇṭābhistomaraistathā.
25. varmabhiḥ ca cāmaraiḥ chatraiḥ patākābhiḥ ca māriṣa
kakṣyābhiḥ atha tottraiḥ ca ghaṇṭābhiḥ tomaraiḥ tathā

25. And, O respected one (māriṣa), with armors, yak-tail whisks, umbrellas, and banners; and then also with girths, goads, bells, and lances, similarly.
विशीर्णैर्विप्रधावन्तो दृश्यन्ते स्म दिशो दश ।
नगमेघप्रतीकाशैर्जलदोदयनिस्वनैः ॥२६॥
26. viśīrṇairvipradhāvanto dṛśyante sma diśo daśa ,
nagameghapratīkāśairjaladodayanisvanaiḥ.
26. viśīrṇaiḥ vipradhāvantaḥ dṛśyante sma diśaḥ
daśa nagameghapratīkāśaiḥ jaladodayanisvanaiḥ
26. vipradhāvantaḥ viśīrṇaiḥ nagameghapratīkāśaiḥ

26. They were seen, shattered and fleeing in all ten directions, resembling mountains and clouds, with sounds like the rumble of rising thunder.
तथैव दन्तिभिर्हीनान्गजारोहान्विशां पते ।
प्रधावन्तोऽन्वपश्याम तव तेषां च संकुले ॥२७॥
27. tathaiva dantibhirhīnāngajārohānviśāṁ pate ,
pradhāvanto'nvapaśyāma tava teṣāṁ ca saṁkule.
27. tathā eva dantibhiḥ hīnān gajārohān viśām pate
pradhāvantaḥ anu apaśyāma tava teṣām ca saṃkule
27. tathā eva viśām pate dantibhiḥ hīnān gajārohān
pradhāvantaḥ tava teṣām ca saṃkule anu apaśyāma
27. Similarly, O Lord of men, we saw elephant-riders, deprived of their elephants, fleeing in that tumultuous battle of yours and theirs.
नानादेशसमुत्थांश्च तुरगान्हेमभूषितान् ।
वातायमानानद्राक्षं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥२८॥
28. nānādeśasamutthāṁśca turagānhemabhūṣitān ,
vātāyamānānadrākṣaṁ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
28. nānādeśasamutthān ca turagān hemabhūṣitān
vātāyamānān adrākṣam śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
28. ca nānādeśasamutthān hemabhūṣitān vātāyamānān
turagān śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ adrākṣam
28. And I saw hundreds, then thousands, of horses, originating from various lands, adorned with gold, panting (from exertion).
अश्वारोहान्हतैरश्वैर्गृहीतासीन्समन्ततः ।
द्रवमाणानपश्याम द्राव्यमाणांश्च संयुगे ॥२९॥
29. aśvārohānhatairaśvairgṛhītāsīnsamantataḥ ,
dravamāṇānapaśyāma drāvyamāṇāṁśca saṁyuge.
29. aśvārohān hataiḥ aśvaiḥ gṛhītāsīn samantataḥ
dravamāṇān apaśyāma drāvyamāṇān ca saṃyuge
29. saṃyuge samantataḥ hataiḥ aśvaiḥ gṛhītāsīn
aśvārohān dravamāṇān ca drāvyamāṇān apaśyāma
29. We saw horse-riders, whose horses had been slain, holding their swords everywhere, some fleeing and others being driven (chased) in the battle.
गजो गजं समासाद्य द्रवमाणं महारणे ।
ययौ विमृद्नंस्तरसा पदातीन्वाजिनस्तथा ॥३०॥
30. gajo gajaṁ samāsādya dravamāṇaṁ mahāraṇe ,
yayau vimṛdnaṁstarasā padātīnvājinastathā.

30. An elephant, having encountered another elephant that was fleeing in the great battle, then proceeded to forcefully crush foot soldiers and horses.
तथैव च रथान्राजन्संममर्द रणे गजः ।
रथश्चैव समासाद्य पदातिं तुरगं तथा ॥३१॥
31. tathaiva ca rathānrājansaṁmamarda raṇe gajaḥ ,
rathaścaiva samāsādya padātiṁ turagaṁ tathā.

rathaḥ ca eva samāsādya padātim turagam tathā

31. And similarly, O King, an elephant crushed chariots in the battle. Moreover, a chariot, having encountered a foot soldier and a horse, likewise (crushed them).
व्यमृद्नात्समरे राजंस्तुरगांश्च नरान्रणे ।
एवं ते बहुधा राजन्प्रमृद्नन्तः परस्परम् ॥३२॥
32. vyamṛdnātsamare rājaṁsturagāṁśca narānraṇe ,
evaṁ te bahudhā rājanpramṛdnantaḥ parasparam.

32. O King, (a chariot) crushed horses and men in battle. Thus, O King, they (the combatants) crushed each other in many ways.
तस्मिन्रौद्रे तथा युद्धे वर्तमाने महाभये ।
प्रावर्तत नदी घोरा शोणितान्त्रतरङ्गिणी ॥३३॥
33. tasminraudre tathā yuddhe vartamāne mahābhaye ,
prāvartata nadī ghorā śoṇitāntrataraṅgiṇī.

33. As that dreadful battle, which was causing great fear, raged on, a terrible river began to flow, with waves of blood and entrails.
अस्थिसंचयसंघाटा केशशैवलशाद्वला ।
रथह्रदा शरावर्ता हयमीना दुरासदा ॥३४॥
34. asthisaṁcayasaṁghāṭā keśaśaivalaśādvalā ,
rathahradā śarāvartā hayamīnā durāsadā.

34. This river, whose aggregated mass is piles of bones, whose algae and grassy banks are hair, whose pools are chariots, whose eddies are arrows, and whose fish are horses, is difficult to approach.
शीर्षोपलसमाकीर्णा हस्तिग्राहसमाकुला ।
कवचोष्णीषफेनाढ्या धनुर्द्वीपासिकच्छपा ॥३५॥
35. śīrṣopalasamākīrṇā hastigrāhasamākulā ,
kavacoṣṇīṣaphenāḍhyā dhanurdvīpāsikacchapā.

35. It is strewn with skulls as rocks, agitated by elephants as crocodiles, rich with armor and turbans as its foam, and whose islands are bows and tortoises are swords.
पताकाध्वजवृक्षाढ्या मर्त्यकूलापहारिणी ।
क्रव्यादसंघसंकीर्णा यमराष्ट्रविवर्धिनी ॥३६॥
36. patākādhvajavṛkṣāḍhyā martyakūlāpahāriṇī ,
kravyādasaṁghasaṁkīrṇā yamarāṣṭravivardhinī.

36. It is rich with banners and flags as trees, carrying away the banks of mortals, filled with multitudes of flesh-eaters, and it augments the realm of Yama.
तां नदीं क्षत्रियाः शूरा हयनागरथप्लवैः ।
प्रतेरुर्बहवो राजन्भयं त्यक्त्वा महाहवे ॥३७॥
37. tāṁ nadīṁ kṣatriyāḥ śūrā hayanāgarathaplavaiḥ ,
praterurbahavo rājanbhayaṁ tyaktvā mahāhave.
37. tām nadīm kṣatriyāḥ śūrāḥ hayanāgarathaplavaiḥ
prateruḥ bahavaḥ rājan bhayam tyaktvā mahāhave

37. O King, many brave kshatriyas crossed that river in the great battle, having abandoned fear, using horses, elephants, and chariots as their rafts.
अपोवाह रणे भीरून्कश्मलेनाभिसंवृतान् ।
यथा वैतरणी प्रेतान्प्रेतराजपुरं प्रति ॥३८॥
38. apovāha raṇe bhīrūnkaśmalenābhisaṁvṛtān ,
yathā vaitaraṇī pretānpretarājapuraṁ prati.

38. In battle, it swept away the fearful ones, who were completely overwhelmed by distress, just as the Vaitaraṇī river carries the departed spirits towards the city of Yama, the lord of the dead.
प्राक्रोशन्क्षत्रियास्तत्र दृष्ट्वा तद्वैशसं महत् ।
दुर्योधनापराधेन क्षयं गच्छन्ति कौरवाः ॥३९॥
39. prākrośankṣatriyāstatra dṛṣṭvā tadvaiśasaṁ mahat ,
duryodhanāparādhena kṣayaṁ gacchanti kauravāḥ.

39. The warriors (kṣatriyas) there cried out, seeing that immense carnage: "Due to Duryodhana's offense, the Kauravas are heading for destruction!"
गुणवत्सु कथं द्वेषं धार्तराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
कृतवान्पाण्डुपुत्रेषु पापात्मा लोभमोहितः ॥४०॥
40. guṇavatsu kathaṁ dveṣaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ ,
kṛtavānpāṇḍuputreṣu pāpātmā lobhamohitaḥ.

40. How did Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana), the king, that evil-minded one deluded by greed, develop such hatred towards the virtuous sons of Pāṇḍu?
एवं बहुविधा वाचः श्रूयन्ते स्मात्र भारत ।
पाण्डवस्तवसंयुक्ताः पुत्राणां ते सुदारुणाः ॥४१॥
41. evaṁ bahuvidhā vācaḥ śrūyante smātra bhārata ,
pāṇḍavastavasaṁyuktāḥ putrāṇāṁ te sudāruṇāḥ.

pāṇḍavastavasaṃyuktāḥ putrāṇām te sudāruṇāḥ

41. O Bhārata, thus many kinds of words were heard here, very terrible for your sons, words that were combined with praise for the Pāṇḍavas.
ता निशम्य तदा वाचः सर्वयोधैरुदाहृताः ।
आगस्कृत्सर्वलोकस्य पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव ॥४२॥
42. tā niśamya tadā vācaḥ sarvayodhairudāhṛtāḥ ,
āgaskṛtsarvalokasya putro duryodhanastava.
42. tā niśamya tadā vācaḥ sarvayodhaiḥ udāhṛtāḥ
āgaskṛt sarvalokasya putraḥ duryodhanaḥ tava
42. tadā sarvayodhaiḥ udāhṛtāḥ tāḥ vācaḥ niśamya,

42. Having then heard those words spoken by all the warriors, your son Duryodhana is the one who has offended all people.
भीष्मं द्रोणं कृपं चैव शल्यं चोवाच भारत ।
युध्यध्वमनहंकाराः किं चिरं कुरुथेति च ॥४३॥
43. bhīṣmaṁ droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ caiva śalyaṁ covāca bhārata ,
yudhyadhvamanahaṁkārāḥ kiṁ ciraṁ kurutheti ca.
43. bhīṣmam droṇam kṛpam ca eva śalyam ca uvāca bhārata
yudhyadhvam anahaṃkārāḥ kim ciram kurutha iti ca
43. bhārata,
(saḥ) bhīṣmam droṇam kṛpam ca eva śalyam ca uvāca (iti): "anahaṃkārāḥ yudhyadhvam! kim ciram kurutha iti ca.
"
43. O Bharata, he (Duryodhana) then said to Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Salya: 'Fight without ego (ahaṃkāra)! Why do you delay so long?'
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कुरूणां पाण्डवैः सह ।
अक्षद्यूतकृतं राजन्सुघोरं वैशसं तदा ॥४४॥
44. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
akṣadyūtakṛtaṁ rājansughoraṁ vaiśasaṁ tadā.
44. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham kurūṇām pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
akṣadyūtakṛtam rājan sughoram vaiśasam tadā
44. rājan,
tataḥ tadā kurūṇām pāṇḍavaiḥ saha akṣadyūtakṛtam sughoram vaiśasam yuddham pravavṛte.
44. O King, then a very dreadful slaughter (vaiśasa), a battle brought about by the dice game, commenced between the Kurus and the Pandavas.
यत्पुरा न निगृह्णीषे वार्यमाणो महात्मभिः ।
वैचित्रवीर्य तस्येदं फलं पश्य तथाविधम् ॥४५॥
45. yatpurā na nigṛhṇīṣe vāryamāṇo mahātmabhiḥ ,
vaicitravīrya tasyedaṁ phalaṁ paśya tathāvidham.
45. yat purā na nigṛhṇīṣe vāryamāṇaḥ mahātmabhiḥ
vaicitravīrya tasya idam phalam paśya tathāvidham
45. vaicitravīrya,
yat purā mahātmabhiḥ vāryamāṇaḥ (san tvam tān) na nigṛhṇīṣe,
tasya idam tathāvidham phalam paśya.
45. O son of Vichitravirya, behold this kind of result (phala) of that (act), because you did not restrain (Duryodhana) previously, even when you were being advised (prevented) by great souls (mahātman).
न हि पाण्डुसुता राजन्ससैन्याः सपदानुगाः ।
रक्षन्ति समरे प्राणान्कौरवा वा विशां पते ॥४६॥
46. na hi pāṇḍusutā rājansasainyāḥ sapadānugāḥ ,
rakṣanti samare prāṇānkauravā vā viśāṁ pate.
46. na hi pāṇḍusutāḥ rājan sasainyāḥ sapadānugāḥ
rakṣanti samare prāṇān kauravāḥ vā viśām pate
46. rājan viśām pate hi na pāṇḍusutāḥ sasainyāḥ

46. Indeed, O king, O lord of the people, neither the sons of Pāṇḍu, with their armies and followers, nor the Kauravas, protect their lives in battle.
एतस्मात्कारणाद्घोरो वर्तते स्म जनक्षयः ।
दैवाद्वा पुरुषव्याघ्र तव चापनयान्नृप ॥४७॥
47. etasmātkāraṇādghoro vartate sma janakṣayaḥ ,
daivādvā puruṣavyāghra tava cāpanayānnṛpa.
47. etasmāt kāraṇāt ghoraḥ vartate sma janakṣayaḥ
daivāt vā puruṣavyāghra tava ca apanayāt nṛpa
47. puruṣavyāghra nṛpa etasmāt kāraṇāt ghoraḥ
janakṣayaḥ daivāt vā tava ca apanayāt sma vartate
47. For this reason, O tiger among men, O king, a terrible destruction of people has occurred, either due to fate or due to your erroneous policy.
