Vaiśampāyana said: "Then, O great king, concerning those great-souled Pāṇḍavas, who possessed immeasurable splendor and had entered there in disguised forms."

Indeed, their time had properly passed while they were dwelling in the excellent city and performing the tasks of that King Virāṭa.

Then, O Bhārata, at the conclusion of that thirteenth year, a large amount of cattle wealth was indeed seized by force by Suśarman.

Then, with great speed, the cowherd (Bhallava) approached the city. Having leaped down from the chariot, wearing earrings, he saw the king of Matsya.

He (the Matsya king) was surrounded by brave warriors wearing earrings and armlets, and by good ministers, as well as by the Pāṇḍavas, who were foremost among men.

Then, having approached King Virata, the great king who was seated in the assembly and enhanced the prosperity of his kingdom, the cowherd bowed down and spoke to him.

The Trigartas, having completely conquered and humiliated us and our kinsmen in battle, are driving away a hundred thousand of your cows. O king of men, protect them, lest your cattle perish.

Having heard that, the king mobilized the army of the Matsyas, which was teeming with chariots, elephants, and horses, and crowded with infantry and banners.

The king acquired an armor that shone like a hundred suns, featured a hundred intricate patterns, a hundred dots, and a hundred eye-like embellishments. It was almost impenetrable for the Matsyas.

And then, hundreds of great chariot-warriors, who were god-like and skilled in striking, fastened on their own armors, preparing to fight.

Then, on the divine chariot, the flag of Matsya, golden and radiant like the sun and moon, and possessing great splendor, was hoisted.

Then King Matsya spoke to Śatānīka, his youngest brother: "My belief is that Kaṅka, Vallava, Gopāla, and the powerful Dāmagranthi should fight; there is no doubt about this."

Let chariots, complete with flags and banners, be provided for these men. Also, let them be given diverse armors, both strong and soft. They should put these on their limbs, and weapons should also be supplied.

Upon hearing this statement from the king, Śatānīka, with an eager mind, O King, immediately assigned chariots to the Pārthas: specifically to Sahadeva, to King Yudhiṣṭhira, to Bhīma, and to Nakula.

Then, the charioteers, who were greatly pleased and honored by their devotion (bhakti) to the king, swiftly prepared the chariots as instructed by the lord of men.

King Virāṭa had provided various armors, both strong and soft, to those whose actions (karma) were unwearied. Having put these on their bodies, those tormentors of enemies were fully armored.
