जनमेजय उवाच ।
किमर्थं राजशार्दूलो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
गान्धार्याः प्रेषयामास वासुदेवं परंतपम् ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
kimarthaṁ rājaśārdūlo dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,

1. Janamejaya said: "For what reason did Yudhishthira, that tiger among kings and king of (dharma) righteousness, send Vasudeva (Krishna), the tormentor of enemies, to Gandhari?"
यदा पूर्वं गतः कृष्णः शमार्थं कौरवान्प्रति ।
न च तं लब्धवान्कामं ततो युद्धमभूदिदम् ॥२॥
2. yadā pūrvaṁ gataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śamārthaṁ kauravānprati ,
na ca taṁ labdhavānkāmaṁ tato yuddhamabhūdidam.
2. yadā pūrvam gataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śamartham kauravān prati
na ca tam labdhavān kāmam tataḥ yuddham abhūt idam

2. Previously, when Krishna went to the Kauravas for the sake of peace, and he did not achieve that desired outcome, then this war occurred.
निहतेषु तु योधेषु हते दुर्योधने तथा ।
पृथिव्यां पाण्डवेयस्य निःसपत्ने कृते युधि ॥३॥
3. nihateṣu tu yodheṣu hate duryodhane tathā ,
pṛthivyāṁ pāṇḍaveyasya niḥsapatne kṛte yudhi.

3. Indeed, when the warriors were slain, and Duryodhana was similarly killed, and the earth, through the war, had been made free of rivals for the Pandava (Yudhishthira)...
विद्रुते शिबिरे शून्ये प्राप्ते यशसि चोत्तमे ।
किं नु तत्कारणं ब्रह्मन्येन कृष्णो गतः पुनः ॥४॥
4. vidrute śibire śūnye prāpte yaśasi cottame ,
kiṁ nu tatkāraṇaṁ brahmanyena kṛṣṇo gataḥ punaḥ.

nu tat kāraṇam brahman yena kṛṣṇaḥ gataḥ punaḥ

4. When the camp was deserted and empty, and supreme glory had been attained, what indeed was that reason, O brahmin, for which Krishna went again?
न चैतत्कारणं ब्रह्मन्नल्पं वै प्रतिभाति मे ।
यत्रागमदमेयात्मा स्वयमेव जनार्दनः ॥५॥
5. na caitatkāraṇaṁ brahmannalpaṁ vai pratibhāti me ,
yatrāgamadameyātmā svayameva janārdanaḥ.
5. na ca etat kāraṇam brahman alpam vai pratibhāti
me yatra āgamat ameya-ātmā svayam eva janārdanaḥ
5. brahman yatra ameya-ātmā janārdanaḥ svayam eva
āgamat ca etat kāraṇam me alpam vai pratibhāti na
5. And this cause, O Brahmin, indeed seems insignificant to me, given that Janārdana himself, whose nature (ātman) is immeasurable, arrived there.
तत्त्वतो वै समाचक्ष्व सर्वमध्वर्युसत्तम ।
यच्चात्र कारणं ब्रह्मन्कार्यस्यास्य विनिश्चये ॥६॥
6. tattvato vai samācakṣva sarvamadhvaryusattama ,
yaccātra kāraṇaṁ brahmankāryasyāsya viniścaye.
6. tattvataḥ vai samācakṣva sarvam adhvaryu-sattama
yat ca atra kāraṇam brahman kāryasya asya viniścaye
6. adhvaryu-sattama tattvataḥ vai sarvam samācakṣva ca
brahman asya kāryasya viniścaye yat kāraṇam atra
6. O best of the priests (adhvaryu), indeed explain everything to me truthfully and completely, and disclose, O Brahmin, whatever the cause (kāraṇa) is here regarding the ascertainment of this matter.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
त्वद्युक्तोऽयमनुप्रश्नो यन्मां पृच्छसि पार्थिव ।
तत्तेऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि यथावद्भरतर्षभ ॥७॥
7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tvadyukto'yamanupraśno yanmāṁ pṛcchasi pārthiva ,
tatte'haṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi yathāvadbharatarṣabha.
7. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tvat-yuktaḥ
ayam anupraśnaḥ yat mām pṛcchasi
pārthiva tat te aham
sampravakṣyāmi yathāvat bharatarṣabha
7. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca pārthiva
yat mām pṛcchasi ayam anupraśnaḥ
tvat-yuktaḥ tat bharatarṣabha
aham te yathāvat sampravakṣyāmi
7. Vaiśampaayana said: "This inquiry is fitting for you, O king (pārthiva), because you ask me. Therefore, I will explain that to you completely and truthfully (yathāvat), O best of the Bharatas."
हतं दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनेन संयुगे ।
व्युत्क्रम्य समयं राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रं महाबलम् ॥८॥
8. hataṁ duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṁyuge ,
vyutkramya samayaṁ rājandhārtarāṣṭraṁ mahābalam.
8. hatam duryodhanam dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena saṃyuge
vyutkramya samayam rājan dhārtarāṣṭram mahābalam
8. rājan saṃyuge bhīmasenena samayam vyutkramya
hatam mahābalam dhārtarāṣṭram duryodhanam dṛṣṭvā
8. O King, having seen the mighty son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Duryodhana, killed by Bhīmasena in battle, after he had violated the agreement (samaya)...
अन्यायेन हतं दृष्ट्वा गदायुद्धेन भारत ।
युधिष्ठिरं महाराज महद्भयमथाविशत् ॥९॥
9. anyāyena hataṁ dṛṣṭvā gadāyuddhena bhārata ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ mahārāja mahadbhayamathāviśat.
9. anyāyena hatam dṛṣṭvā gadāyuddhena bhārata
yudhiṣṭhiram mahārāja mahat bhayam atha āviśat
9. bhārata mahārāja,
gadāyuddhena anyāyena hatam dṛṣṭvā,
atha mahat bhayam yudhiṣṭhiram āviśat
9. O Bhārata, O great king, then great fear entered Yudhiṣṭhira upon seeing (Duryodhana) struck unlawfully in the mace-fight.
चिन्तयानो महाभागां गान्धारीं तपसान्विताम् ।
घोरेण तपसा युक्तां त्रैलोक्यमपि सा दहेत् ॥१०॥
10. cintayāno mahābhāgāṁ gāndhārīṁ tapasānvitām ,
ghoreṇa tapasā yuktāṁ trailokyamapi sā dahet.
10. cintayānaḥ mahābhāgām gāndhārīm tapasā anvitām
ghoreṇa tapasā yuktām trailokyam api sā dahet
10. cintayānaḥ tapasā anvitām ghoreṇa tapasā yuktām
mahābhāgām gāndhārīm sā api trailokyam dahet
10. Reflecting on the highly revered Gāndhārī, who is endowed with intense asceticism (tapas), he (Yudhiṣṭhira wondered if) she, possessed of such fierce asceticism (tapas), might even incinerate the three worlds.
तस्य चिन्तयमानस्य बुद्धिः समभवत्तदा ।
गान्धार्याः क्रोधदीप्तायाः पूर्वं प्रशमनं भवेत् ॥११॥
11. tasya cintayamānasya buddhiḥ samabhavattadā ,
gāndhāryāḥ krodhadīptāyāḥ pūrvaṁ praśamanaṁ bhavet.
11. tasya cintayamānasya buddhiḥ samabhavat tadā
gāndhāryāḥ krodhadīptāyāḥ pūrvam praśamanam bhavet
11. tadā tasya cintayamānasya buddhiḥ samabhavat:
krodhadīptāyāḥ gāndhāryāḥ praśamanam pūrvam bhavet
11. Then, as he (Yudhiṣṭhira) was reflecting, this idea arose in his mind: Gāndhārī, who is blazing with anger, must first be appeased.
सा हि पुत्रवधं श्रुत्वा कृतमस्माभिरीदृशम् ।
मानसेनाग्निना क्रुद्धा भस्मसान्नः करिष्यति ॥१२॥
12. sā hi putravadhaṁ śrutvā kṛtamasmābhirīdṛśam ,
mānasenāgninā kruddhā bhasmasānnaḥ kariṣyati.
12. sā hi putravadham śrutvā kṛtam asmābhiḥ īdṛśam
mānasena agninā kruddhā bhasmasāt naḥ kariṣyati
12. hi sā putravadham ca asmābhiḥ kṛtam īdṛśam (karma) ca śrutvā,
kruddhā mānasena agninā naḥ bhasmasāt kariṣyati
12. Indeed, upon hearing of the killing of her sons, and of such a deed (as this) committed by us, she, enraged, will incinerate us with her mental fire.
कथं दुःखमिदं तीव्रं गान्धारी प्रसहिष्यति ।
श्रुत्वा विनिहतं पुत्रं छलेनाजिह्मयोधिनम् ॥१३॥
13. kathaṁ duḥkhamidaṁ tīvraṁ gāndhārī prasahiṣyati ,
śrutvā vinihataṁ putraṁ chalenājihmayodhinam.
13. katham duḥkham idam tīvram gāndhārī prasahiṣyati
śrutvā vinihatam putram chalena ajihmayodhinam
13. gāndhārī katham idam tīvram duḥkham prasahiṣyati
ajihmayodhinam putram chalena vinihatam śrutvā
13. How will Gandhari endure this intense sorrow, having heard that her son, who fought fairly, was slain by deceit?
एवं विचिन्त्य बहुधा भयशोकसमन्वितः ।
वासुदेवमिदं वाक्यं धर्मराजोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ vicintya bahudhā bhayaśokasamanvitaḥ ,
vāsudevamidaṁ vākyaṁ dharmarājo'bhyabhāṣata.
14. evam vicintya bahudhā bhayaśokasammanvitaḥ
vāsudevam idam vākyam dharmarājaḥ abhyabhāṣata
14. bhayaśokasammanvitaḥ dharmarājaḥ evam bahudhā
vicintya idam vākyam vāsudevam abhyabhāṣata
14. Having pondered thus in many ways, and filled with fear and sorrow, King Yudhishthira (Dharmarāja) addressed these words to Vasudeva (Krishna).
तव प्रसादाद्गोविन्द राज्यं निहतकण्टकम् ।
अप्राप्यं मनसापीह प्राप्तमस्माभिरच्युत ॥१५॥
15. tava prasādādgovinda rājyaṁ nihatakaṇṭakam ,
aprāpyaṁ manasāpīha prāptamasmābhiracyuta.
15. tava prasādāt govinda rājyam nihatakaṇṭakam
aprāpyam manasā api iha prāptam asmābhiḥ acyuta
15. govinda acyuta tava prasādāt iha manasā api
aprāpyam nihatakaṇṭakam rājyam asmābhiḥ prāptam
15. O Govinda, O Acyuta, by your grace, this kingdom, free from enemies and unattainable even by thought (manas), has been obtained by us here.
प्रत्यक्षं मे महाबाहो संग्रामे रोमहर्षणे ।
विमर्दः सुमहान्प्राप्तस्त्वया यादवनन्दन ॥१६॥
16. pratyakṣaṁ me mahābāho saṁgrāme romaharṣaṇe ,
vimardaḥ sumahānprāptastvayā yādavanandana.
16. pratyakṣam me mahābāho saṅgrāme romaharṣaṇe
vimardaḥ sumahān prāptaḥ tvayā yādavanandana
16. mahābāho yādavanandana me pratyakṣam tvayā
romaharṣaṇe saṅgrāme sumahān vimardaḥ prāptaḥ
16. O mighty-armed one, O delight of the Yadus, the immense destruction in that hair-raising battle was directly witnessed by me and brought about by you.
त्वया देवासुरे युद्धे वधार्थममरद्विषाम् ।
यथा साह्यं पुरा दत्तं हताश्च विबुधद्विषः ॥१७॥
17. tvayā devāsure yuddhe vadhārthamamaradviṣām ,
yathā sāhyaṁ purā dattaṁ hatāśca vibudhadviṣaḥ.
17. tvayā devāsure yuddhe vadhārtham amaradviṣām
yathā sāhyam purā dattam hatāḥ ca vibudhadviṣaḥ
17. tvayā devāsure yuddhe amaradviṣām vadhārtham
yathā purā sāhyam dattam ca vibudhadviṣaḥ hatāḥ
17. Just as formerly, in the war between the gods and asuras, help was given by you for the destruction of the enemies of the immortals, and those enemies of the wise were slain.
साह्यं तथा महाबाहो दत्तमस्माकमच्युत ।
सारथ्येन च वार्ष्णेय भवता यद्धृता वयम् ॥१८॥
18. sāhyaṁ tathā mahābāho dattamasmākamacyuta ,
sārathyena ca vārṣṇeya bhavatā yaddhṛtā vayam.
18. sāhyam tathā mahābāho dattam asmākam acyuta
sāratthyena ca vārṣṇeya bhavatā yat dhṛtāḥ vayam
18. mahābāho acyuta vārṣṇeya tathā asmākam sāhyam
bhavatā dattam ca yat vayam sāratthyena dhṛtāḥ
18. Similarly, O mighty-armed (mahābāho) and infallible one (acyuta), such help has been given to us, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi (vārṣṇeya), because we are sustained by your charioteering.
यदि न त्वं भवेन्नाथः फल्गुनस्य महारणे ।
कथं शक्यो रणे जेतुं भवेदेष बलार्णवः ॥१९॥
19. yadi na tvaṁ bhavennāthaḥ phalgunasya mahāraṇe ,
kathaṁ śakyo raṇe jetuṁ bhavedeṣa balārṇavaḥ.
19. yadi na tvam bhavet nāthaḥ phālgunasya mahāraṇe
katham śakyaḥ raṇe jetum bhavet eṣaḥ balārṇavaḥ
19. yadi tvam phālgunasya mahāraṇe nāthaḥ na bhavet,
katham eṣaḥ balārṇavaḥ raṇe jetum śakyaḥ bhavet?
19. If you were not the protector of Arjuna (phālguna) in this great war, how could this ocean of strength (balārṇava) possibly be conquered in battle?
गदाप्रहारा विपुलाः परिघैश्चापि ताडनम् ।
शक्तिभिर्भिण्डिपालैश्च तोमरैः सपरश्वधैः ॥२०॥
20. gadāprahārā vipulāḥ parighaiścāpi tāḍanam ,
śaktibhirbhiṇḍipālaiśca tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ.
20. gadāprahārāḥ vipulāḥ parighaiḥ ca api tāḍanam
śaktibhiḥ bhiṇḍipālaiḥ ca tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ
20. vipulāḥ gadāprahārāḥ ca api parighaiḥ tāḍanam
śaktibhiḥ bhiṇḍipālaiḥ ca tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ
20. There were numerous blows from maces, and also strikes from iron clubs; with spears (śakti), "bhiṇḍipālas" (a type of javelin), and lances, along with axes.
वाचश्च परुषाः प्राप्तास्त्वया ह्यस्मद्धितैषिणा ।
ताश्च ते सफलाः सर्वा हते दुर्योधनेऽच्युत ॥२१॥
21. vācaśca paruṣāḥ prāptāstvayā hyasmaddhitaiṣiṇā ,
tāśca te saphalāḥ sarvā hate duryodhane'cyuta.
21. vācaḥ ca paruṣāḥ prāptāḥ tvayā hi asmaddhitaiṣiṇā
tāḥ ca te saphalāḥ sarvāḥ hate duryodhane acyuta
21. acyuta hi asmaddhitaiṣiṇā tvayā paruṣāḥ vācaḥ
prāptāḥ ca duryodhane hate te tāḥ sarvāḥ saphalāḥ ca
21. O Acyuta, harsh words were indeed received from you, who wished for our welfare. And all those words of yours will now be successful, with Duryodhana killed.
गान्धार्या हि महाबाहो क्रोधं बुध्यस्व माधव ।
सा हि नित्यं महाभागा तपसोग्रेण कर्शिता ॥२२॥
22. gāndhāryā hi mahābāho krodhaṁ budhyasva mādhava ,
sā hi nityaṁ mahābhāgā tapasogreṇa karśitā.
22. gāndhāryāḥ hi mahābāho krodham budhyasva mādhava
sā hi nityam mahābhāgā tapasā ugreṇa karśitā
22. mahābāho mādhava hi gāndhāryāḥ krodham budhyasva
hi sā mahābhāgā nityam ugreṇa tapasā karśitā
22. O mighty-armed (Mahabaho) Madhava, indeed, understand Gandhari's anger. For that illustrious lady (Mahabhaga) is constantly emaciated by severe asceticism (tapas).
पुत्रपौत्रवधं श्रुत्वा ध्रुवं नः संप्रधक्ष्यति ।
तस्याः प्रसादनं वीर प्राप्तकालं मतं मम ॥२३॥
23. putrapautravadhaṁ śrutvā dhruvaṁ naḥ saṁpradhakṣyati ,
tasyāḥ prasādanaṁ vīra prāptakālaṁ mataṁ mama.
23. putrapautravadham śrutvā dhruvam naḥ sampradhakṣyati
tasyāḥ prasādanam vīra prāptakālam matam mama
23. vīra putrapautravadham śrutvā dhruvam naḥ
sampradhakṣyati mama matam tasyāḥ prasādanam prāptakālam
23. Having heard of the killing of her sons and grandsons, she will surely completely consume us. O hero, I consider her appeasement to be timely.
कश्च तां क्रोधदीप्ताक्षीं पुत्रव्यसनकर्शिताम् ।
वीक्षितुं पुरुषः शक्तस्त्वामृते पुरुषोत्तम ॥२४॥
24. kaśca tāṁ krodhadīptākṣīṁ putravyasanakarśitām ,
vīkṣituṁ puruṣaḥ śaktastvāmṛte puruṣottama.
24. kaḥ ca tām krodhadīptākṣīm putravyasanakarśitām
vīkṣitum puruṣaḥ śaktaḥ tvām ṛte puruṣottama
24. ca puruṣottama tvām ṛte krodhadīptākṣīm
putravyasanakarśitām tām vīkṣitum kaḥ puruṣaḥ śaktaḥ
24. And who among men (puruṣa) would be able to look at her - whose eyes are ablaze with rage and who is emaciated by the sorrow for her sons - except for you, O best among men (puruṣottama)?
तत्र मे गमनं प्राप्तं रोचते तव माधव ।
गान्धार्याः क्रोधदीप्तायाः प्रशमार्थमरिंदम ॥२५॥
25. tatra me gamanaṁ prāptaṁ rocate tava mādhava ,
gāndhāryāḥ krodhadīptāyāḥ praśamārthamariṁdama.
25. tatra me gamanam prāptam rocate tava mādhava
gāndhāryāḥ krodhadīptāyāḥ praśamārtham arimdam
25. mādhava arimdam,
tatra me gamanam tava prāptam (iti) rocate,
(tathā) krodhadīptāyāḥ gāndhāryāḥ praśamārtham (iti api) me rocate.
25. O Madhava, O subduer of enemies (arimdama), my going there seems appropriate to you, and it pleases me, for the sake of appeasing Gandhari, who is blazing with anger.
त्वं हि कर्ता विकर्ता च लोकानां प्रभवाप्ययः ।
हेतुकारणसंयुक्तैर्वाक्यैः कालसमीरितैः ॥२६॥
26. tvaṁ hi kartā vikartā ca lokānāṁ prabhavāpyayaḥ ,
hetukāraṇasaṁyuktairvākyaiḥ kālasamīritaiḥ.
26. tvam hi kartā vikartā ca lokānām prabhavāpyayaḥ
hetukāraṇasaṃyuktaiḥ vākyaiḥ kālasamīritaiḥ
26. tvam hi lokānām kartā vikartā ca,
prabhavāpyayaḥ,
hetukāraṇasaṃyuktaiḥ kālasamīritaiḥ vākyaiḥ (etat kāryam sādhyasi).
26. Indeed, you are the creator and the destroyer, the origin and dissolution of the worlds, (and you will achieve this purpose) through words filled with sound reasoning and appropriate causes, spoken at the right time.
क्षिप्रमेव महाप्राज्ञ गान्धारीं शमयिष्यसि ।
पितामहश्च भगवान्कृष्णस्तत्र भविष्यति ॥२७॥
27. kṣiprameva mahāprājña gāndhārīṁ śamayiṣyasi ,
pitāmahaśca bhagavānkṛṣṇastatra bhaviṣyati.
27. kṣipram eva mahāprājña gāndhārīm śamayişyasi
pitāmahaḥ ca bhagavān kṛṣṇaḥ tatra bhavişyati
27. mahāprājña,
(tvam) kṣipram eva gāndhārīm śamayişyasi.
ca pitāmahaḥ bhagavān kṛṣṇaḥ tatra bhavişyati.
27. O greatly wise one, you will quickly appease Gandhari. And the venerable Pitamaha (Bhishma) and Lord Krishna will be present there.
सर्वथा ते महाबाहो गान्धार्याः क्रोधनाशनम् ।
कर्तव्यं सात्वतश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवानां हितैषिणा ॥२८॥
28. sarvathā te mahābāho gāndhāryāḥ krodhanāśanam ,
kartavyaṁ sātvataśreṣṭha pāṇḍavānāṁ hitaiṣiṇā.
28. sarvathā te mahābāho gāndhāryāḥ krodhanāśanam
kartavyam sātvataśreṣṭha pāṇḍavānām hitaişiṇā
28. mahābāho sātvataśreṣṭha,
pāṇḍavānām hitaişiṇā te sarvathā gāndhāryāḥ krodhanāśanam kartavyam (asti).
28. O mighty-armed one, O best among the Satvatas, the appeasement of Gandhari's anger must certainly be accomplished by you, who are a well-wisher of the Pandavas.
धर्मराजस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा यदुकुलोद्वहः ।
आमन्त्र्य दारुकं प्राह रथः सज्जो विधीयताम् ॥२९॥
29. dharmarājasya vacanaṁ śrutvā yadukulodvahaḥ ,
āmantrya dārukaṁ prāha rathaḥ sajjo vidhīyatām.
29. dharma-rājasya vacanam śrutvā yadukulodvahaḥ
āmantrya dārukam prāha rathaḥ sajjaḥ vidhīyatām
29. yadukulodvahaḥ dharma-rājasya vacanam śrutvā
dārukam āmantrya prāha rathaḥ sajjaḥ vidhīyatām
29. Having heard the words of the king of righteousness (dharma), Krishna, the uplifter of the Yadu dynasty, addressed Dāruka and instructed, "Let the chariot be made ready."
केशवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा त्वरमाणोऽथ दारुकः ।
न्यवेदयद्रथं सज्जं केशवाय महात्मने ॥३०॥
30. keśavasya vacaḥ śrutvā tvaramāṇo'tha dārukaḥ ,
nyavedayadrathaṁ sajjaṁ keśavāya mahātmane.

30. Having heard Keśava's words, Dāruka, promptly and eagerly, reported the prepared chariot to the great-souled Keśava.
तं रथं यादवश्रेष्ठः समारुह्य परंतपः ।
जगाम हास्तिनपुरं त्वरितः केशवो विभुः ॥३१॥
31. taṁ rathaṁ yādavaśreṣṭhaḥ samāruhya paraṁtapaḥ ,
jagāma hāstinapuraṁ tvaritaḥ keśavo vibhuḥ.
31. tam ratham yādava-śreṣṭhaḥ samāruhya parantapaḥ
jagāma hāstinapuram tvaritaḥ keśavaḥ vibhuḥ
31. yādava-śreṣṭhaḥ parantapaḥ vibhuḥ keśavaḥ tam

31. Having mounted that chariot, Keśava, the best among the Yadavas, the tormentor of enemies, the mighty lord, swiftly proceeded to Hastinapura.
ततः प्रायान्महाराज माधवो भगवान्रथी ।
नागसाह्वयमासाद्य प्रविवेश च वीर्यवान् ॥३२॥
32. tataḥ prāyānmahārāja mādhavo bhagavānrathī ,
nāgasāhvayamāsādya praviveśa ca vīryavān.

32. O great king, then the powerful Mādhava, the divine charioteer, departed, and having arrived at the city named Nāga (Hastinapura), he entered.
प्रविश्य नगरं वीरो रथघोषेण नादयन् ।
विदितो धृतराष्ट्रस्य सोऽवतीर्य रथोत्तमात् ॥३३॥
33. praviśya nagaraṁ vīro rathaghoṣeṇa nādayan ,
vidito dhṛtarāṣṭrasya so'vatīrya rathottamāt.

viditaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saḥ avatīrya rathottamāt

33. The hero entered the city, making it resound with the sound of his chariot. Known to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, he then descended from his excellent chariot.
अभ्यगच्छददीनात्मा धृतराष्ट्रनिवेशनम् ।
पूर्वं चाभिगतं तत्र सोऽपश्यदृषिसत्तमम् ॥३४॥
34. abhyagacchadadīnātmā dhṛtarāṣṭraniveśanam ,
pūrvaṁ cābhigataṁ tatra so'paśyadṛṣisattamam.
34. abhyagacchat adīna ātmā dhṛtarāṣṭraniveśanam
pūrvam ca abhigatam tatra saḥ apaśyat ṛṣisattamam
34. adīnātmā dhṛtarāṣṭraniveśanam abhyagacchat ca
tatra pūrvam abhigatam ṛṣisattamam saḥ apaśyat
34. The noble-hearted (ātman) one then approached Dhṛtarāṣṭra's residence. There he saw the most excellent sage who had arrived before him.
पादौ प्रपीड्य कृष्णस्य राज्ञश्चापि जनार्दनः ।
अभ्यवादयदव्यग्रो गान्धारीं चापि केशवः ॥३५॥
35. pādau prapīḍya kṛṣṇasya rājñaścāpi janārdanaḥ ,
abhyavādayadavyagro gāndhārīṁ cāpi keśavaḥ.
35. pādau prapīḍya kṛṣṇasya rājñaḥ ca api janārdanaḥ
abhyavādayat avyagraḥ gāndhārīm ca api keśavaḥ

35. The composed Janārdana, after pressing the feet of Kṛṣṇa (Vyāsa) and also those of the King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), then Keśava also greeted Gāndhārī.
ततस्तु यादवश्रेष्ठो धृतराष्ट्रमधोक्षजः ।
पाणिमालम्ब्य राज्ञः स सस्वरं प्ररुरोद ह ॥३६॥
36. tatastu yādavaśreṣṭho dhṛtarāṣṭramadhokṣajaḥ ,
pāṇimālambya rājñaḥ sa sasvaraṁ praruroda ha.
36. tataḥ tu yādavaśreṣṭhaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭram adhokṣajaḥ
pāṇim ālambya rājñaḥ saḥ sasvaram praruroda ha

36. Then, that best among the Yadus, Adhokṣaja (Kṛṣṇa), holding the king's (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) hand, indeed wept aloud.
स मुहूर्तमिवोत्सृज्य बाष्पं शोकसमुद्भवम् ।
प्रक्षाल्य वारिणा नेत्रे आचम्य च यथाविधि ।
उवाच प्रश्रितं वाक्यं धृतराष्ट्रमरिंदमः ॥३७॥
37. sa muhūrtamivotsṛjya bāṣpaṁ śokasamudbhavam ,
prakṣālya vāriṇā netre ācamya ca yathāvidhi ,
uvāca praśritaṁ vākyaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭramariṁdamaḥ.
37. saḥ muhūrtam iva utsṛjya bāṣpam
śoka-samudbhavam prakṣālya vāriṇā
netre ācamya ca yathāvidhi uvāca
praśritam vākyam dhṛtarāṣṭram arimdamah

netre prakṣālya ca yathāvidhi ācamya
dhṛtarāṣṭram praśritam vākyam uvāca
37. For a moment, having released the tears born of sorrow, and then having washed his eyes with water and performed the ritual sipping of water (ācamana) as prescribed, the subduer of enemies spoke humble words to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचिद्भूतभव्यस्य भारत ।
कालस्य च यथा वृत्तं तत्ते सुविदितं प्रभो ॥३८॥
38. na te'styaviditaṁ kiṁcidbhūtabhavyasya bhārata ,
kālasya ca yathā vṛttaṁ tatte suviditaṁ prabho.
38. na te asti aviditam kiñcit bhūta-bhavyasya bhārata
kālasya ca yathā vṛttam tat te suviditam prabho
38. bhārata prabho bhūta-bhavyasya kiñcit te aviditam
na asti ca kālasya yathā vṛttam tat te suviditam
38. O Bhārata, nothing of the past or future is unknown to you. And how the course of time has transpired, that is also very well known to you, O lord.
यदिदं पाण्डवैः सर्वैस्तव चित्तानुरोधिभिः ।
कथं कुलक्षयो न स्यात्तथा क्षत्रस्य भारत ॥३९॥
39. yadidaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ sarvaistava cittānurodhibhiḥ ,
kathaṁ kulakṣayo na syāttathā kṣatrasya bhārata.
39. yat idam pāṇḍavaiḥ sarvaiḥ tava citta-anurodhibhiḥ
katham kula-kṣayaḥ na syāt tathā kṣatrasya bhārata
39. bhārata yat idam sarvaiḥ tava citta-anurodhibhiḥ
pāṇḍavaiḥ katham kula-kṣayaḥ tathā kṣatrasya na syāt
39. O Bhārata, by these Pāṇḍavas, all of whom act in accordance with your wishes, how could there not be the destruction of the family (kula) and thus of the kṣatriya class?
भ्रातृभिः समयं कृत्वा क्षान्तवान्धर्मवत्सलः ।
द्यूतच्छलजितैः शक्तैर्वनवासोऽभ्युपागतः ॥४०॥
40. bhrātṛbhiḥ samayaṁ kṛtvā kṣāntavāndharmavatsalaḥ ,
dyūtacchalajitaiḥ śaktairvanavāso'bhyupāgataḥ.
40. bhrātṛbhiḥ samayam kṛtvā kṣāntavān dharma-vatsalaḥ
dyūta-cchala-jitaiḥ śaktaiḥ vana-vāsaḥ abhyupāgataḥ

40. The one devoted to natural law (dharma), having made an agreement with his brothers, endured [the injustice]. Though powerful, they (the Pāṇḍavas), having been defeated by the trickery of dice, accepted forest exile.
अज्ञातवासचर्या च नानावेशसमावृतैः ।
अन्ये च बहवः क्लेशास्त्वशक्तैरिव नित्यदा ॥४१॥
41. ajñātavāsacaryā ca nānāveśasamāvṛtaiḥ ,
anye ca bahavaḥ kleśāstvaśaktairiva nityadā.
41. ajñātavāsacaryā ca nānāveśasamāvṛtaiḥ anye
ca bahavaḥ kleśāḥ tu aśaktaiḥ iva nityadā
41. ca ajñātavāsacaryā nānāveśasamāvṛtaiḥ ca
anye bahavaḥ kleśāḥ tu aśaktaiḥ iva nityadā
41. And the practice of living incognito, cloaked in various disguises, along with many other troubles (kleśa), constantly afflicted us as if we were powerless.
मया च स्वयमागम्य युद्धकाल उपस्थिते ।
सर्वलोकस्य सांनिध्ये ग्रामांस्त्वं पञ्च याचितः ॥४२॥
42. mayā ca svayamāgamya yuddhakāla upasthite ,
sarvalokasya sāṁnidhye grāmāṁstvaṁ pañca yācitaḥ.
42. mayā ca svayam āgamya yuddhakāle upasthite
sarvalokasya sāṃnidhye grāmān tvam pañca yācitaḥ
42. ca mayā svayam āgamya yuddhakāle upasthite

42. And I, having personally come when the time of war was at hand, requested five villages from you in the presence of all people.
त्वया कालोपसृष्टेन लोभतो नापवर्जिताः ।
तवापराधान्नृपते सर्वं क्षत्रं क्षयं गतम् ॥४३॥
43. tvayā kālopasṛṣṭena lobhato nāpavarjitāḥ ,
tavāparādhānnṛpate sarvaṁ kṣatraṁ kṣayaṁ gatam.
43. tvayā kālopasṛṣṭena lobhataḥ na apavarjitāḥ tava
aparādhāt nṛpate sarvam kṣatram kṣayam gatam
43. nṛpate tvayā kālopasṛṣṭena lobhataḥ na apavarjitāḥ
tava aparādhāt sarvam kṣatram kṣayam gatam
43. Influenced by fate and driven by greed, you did not release (the villages). O king, because of your offense, the entire warrior class (kṣatram) has met its destruction.
भीष्मेण सोमदत्तेन बाह्लिकेन कृपेण च ।
द्रोणेन च सपुत्रेण विदुरेण च धीमता ।
याचितस्त्वं शमं नित्यं न च तत्कृतवानसि ॥४४॥
44. bhīṣmeṇa somadattena bāhlikena kṛpeṇa ca ,
droṇena ca saputreṇa vidureṇa ca dhīmatā ,
yācitastvaṁ śamaṁ nityaṁ na ca tatkṛtavānasi.

44. You were constantly entreated for peace by Bhishma, Somadatta, Balhika, Kripa, and Drona with his son, as well as by the intelligent Vidura, yet you did not act upon it.
कालोपहतचित्तो हि सर्वो मुह्यति भारत ।
यथा मूढो भवान्पूर्वमस्मिन्नर्थे समुद्यते ॥४५॥
45. kālopahatacitto hi sarvo muhyati bhārata ,
yathā mūḍho bhavānpūrvamasminnarthe samudyate.
45. kālopahatacittaḥ hi sarvaḥ muhyati bhārata |
yathā mūḍhaḥ bhavān pūrvam asmin arthe samudyate
45. bhārata hi kālopahatacittaḥ sarvaḥ muhyati
yathā pūrvam asmin arthe samudyate bhavān mūḍhaḥ
45. Indeed, everyone whose mind is afflicted by time becomes deluded, O Bhārata, just as you were bewildered before when this matter arose.
किमन्यत्कालयोगाद्धि दिष्टमेव परायणम् ।
मा च दोषं महाराज पाण्डवेषु निवेशय ॥४६॥
46. kimanyatkālayogāddhi diṣṭameva parāyaṇam ,
mā ca doṣaṁ mahārāja pāṇḍaveṣu niveśaya.
46. kim anyat kālayogāt hi diṣṭam eva parāyaṇam
| mā ca doṣam mahārāja pāṇḍaveṣu niveśaya
46. mahārāja kālayogāt anyat kim hi diṣṭam eva
parāyaṇam ca pāṇḍaveṣu doṣam mā niveśaya
46. What else can there be but the conjunction of time, for destiny is indeed the supreme resort. And, O great king, do not attribute blame to the Pāṇḍavas.
अल्पोऽप्यतिक्रमो नास्ति पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
धर्मतो न्यायतश्चैव स्नेहतश्च परंतप ॥४७॥
47. alpo'pyatikramo nāsti pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
dharmato nyāyataścaiva snehataśca paraṁtapa.
47. alpaḥ api atikramaḥ na asti pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām
| dharmataḥ nyāyataḥ ca eva snehatas ca parantapa
47. parantapa mahātmanām pāṇḍavānām alpaḥ api atikramaḥ
na asti dharmataḥ ca nyāyataḥ ca eva snehatas ca
47. There is not even a slight transgression on the part of the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, O scorcher of foes, whether by virtue of natural law (dharma), justice, or affection.
एतत्सर्वं तु विज्ञाय आत्मदोषकृतं फलम् ।
असूयां पाण्डुपुत्रेषु न भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥४८॥
48. etatsarvaṁ tu vijñāya ātmadoṣakṛtaṁ phalam ,
asūyāṁ pāṇḍuputreṣu na bhavānkartumarhati.
48. etat sarvam tu vijñāya ātma-doṣa-kṛtam phalam
| asūyām pāṇḍuputreṣu na bhavān kartum arhati
48. bhavān tu etat sarvam ātma-doṣa-kṛtam phalam
vijñāya pāṇḍuputreṣu asūyām kartum na arhati
48. Therefore, realizing all this to be the consequence of your own faults, you should not harbor malice towards the sons of Pāṇḍu.
कुलं वंशश्च पिण्डश्च यच्च पुत्रकृतं फलम् ।
गान्धार्यास्तव चैवाद्य पाण्डवेषु प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥४९॥
49. kulaṁ vaṁśaśca piṇḍaśca yacca putrakṛtaṁ phalam ,
gāndhāryāstava caivādya pāṇḍaveṣu pratiṣṭhitam.
49. kulam vaṃśaḥ ca piṇḍaḥ ca yat ca putrakṛtam phalam
gāndhāryāḥ tava ca eva adya pāṇḍaveṣu pratiṣṭhitam
49. adya tava gāndhāryāḥ ca kulam vaṃśaḥ ca piṇḍaḥ ca
yat ca putrakṛtam phalam eva pāṇḍaveṣu pratiṣṭhitam
49. Today, your family (kula), your lineage (vaṃśa), and the ancestral offerings (piṇḍa), as well as any benefits gained through sons, are all dependent on the Pandavas; the same applies to Gandhari.
एतत्सर्वमनुध्यात्वा आत्मनश्च व्यतिक्रमम् ।
शिवेन पाण्डवान्ध्याहि नमस्ते भरतर्षभ ॥५०॥
50. etatsarvamanudhyātvā ātmanaśca vyatikramam ,
śivena pāṇḍavāndhyāhi namaste bharatarṣabha.
50. etat sarvam anu dhyātvā ātmanaḥ ca vyatikramam
śivena pāṇḍavān dhyāhi namaḥ te bharatarṣabha
50. bharatarṣabha etat sarvam ātmanaḥ ca vyatikramam
anu dhyātvā pāṇḍavān śivena dhyāhi te namaḥ
50. Having reflected upon all this, and upon your own transgressions (vyatikrama) against your true self (ātman), regard the Pandavas with benevolence. Salutations to you, O bull among the Bharatas!
जानासि च महाबाहो धर्मराजस्य या त्वयि ।
भक्तिर्भरतशार्दूल स्नेहश्चापि स्वभावतः ॥५१॥
51. jānāsi ca mahābāho dharmarājasya yā tvayi ,
bhaktirbharataśārdūla snehaścāpi svabhāvataḥ.
51. jānāsi ca mahābāho dharmarājasya yā tvayi
bhaktiḥ bharataśārdūla snehaḥ ca api svabhāvataḥ
51. mahābāho bharataśārdūla ca jānāsi yā dharmarājasya
bhaktiḥ snehaḥ ca api tvayi svabhāvataḥ
51. And you know, O mighty-armed one, the devotion (bhakti) that Dharmaraja (dharma) holds for you, and also his natural affection, O tiger among the Bharatas!
एतच्च कदनं कृत्वा शत्रूणामपकारिणाम् ।
दह्यते स्म दिवारात्रं न च शर्माधिगच्छति ॥५२॥
52. etacca kadanaṁ kṛtvā śatrūṇāmapakāriṇām ,
dahyate sma divārātraṁ na ca śarmādhigacchati.
52. etat ca kadanam kṛtvā śatrūṇām apakāriṇām
dahyate sma divārātram na ca śarma adhigacchati
52. etat ca apakāriṇām śatrūṇām kadanam kṛtvā
divārātram dahyate sma ca śarma na adhigacchati
52. And having caused this destruction of the harmful enemies, he was tormented day and night and did not attain peace.
त्वां चैव नरशार्दूल गान्धारीं च यशस्विनीम् ।
स शोचन्भरतश्रेष्ठ न शान्तिमधिगच्छति ॥५३॥
53. tvāṁ caiva naraśārdūla gāndhārīṁ ca yaśasvinīm ,
sa śocanbharataśreṣṭha na śāntimadhigacchati.
53. tvām ca eva naraśārdūla gāndhārīm ca yaśasvinīm
sa śocan bharataśreṣṭha na śāntim adhigacchati
53. bharataśreṣṭha naraśārdūla tvām ca eva yaśasvinīm
gāndhārīm ca śocan śāntim na adhigacchati
53. O best among the Bhāratas (bharata), O tiger among men (naraśārdūla), Dhṛtarāṣṭra, grieving for you and also for the glorious Gāndhārī, does not attain peace.
ह्रिया च परयाविष्टो भवन्तं नाधिगच्छति ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तं बुद्धिव्याकुलितेन्द्रियम् ॥५४॥
54. hriyā ca parayāviṣṭo bhavantaṁ nādhigacchati ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptaṁ buddhivyākulitendriyam.
54. hriyā ca parayā āviṣṭaḥ bhavantam na adhigacchati
putraśokābhisantaptam buddhivyākulitendriyam
54. ca parayā hriyā āviṣṭaḥ putraśokābhisantaptam
buddhivyākulitendriyam bhavantam na adhigacchati
54. And, overcome by immense shame, with his senses agitated by a bewildered intellect, and intensely afflicted by sorrow for his sons, he (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) cannot approach you.
एवमुक्त्वा महाराज धृतराष्ट्रं यदूत्तमः ।
उवाच परमं वाक्यं गान्धारीं शोककर्शिताम् ॥५५॥
55. evamuktvā mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ yadūttamaḥ ,
uvāca paramaṁ vākyaṁ gāndhārīṁ śokakarśitām.
55. evam uktvā mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭram yadūttamaḥ
uvāca paramam vākyam gāndhārīm śokakarśitām
55. mahārāja yadūttamaḥ evam dhṛtarāṣṭram uktvā
śokakarśitām gāndhārīm paramam vākyam uvāca
55. O great king (mahārāja), having thus spoken to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Kṛṣṇa, the best of the Yadus (yadūttama), then addressed the sorrow-emaciated Gāndhārī with supreme words.
सौबलेयि निबोध त्वं यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि सुव्रते ।
त्वत्समा नास्ति लोकेऽस्मिन्नद्य सीमन्तिनी शुभे ॥५६॥
56. saubaleyi nibodha tvaṁ yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi suvrate ,
tvatsamā nāsti loke'sminnadya sīmantinī śubhe.
56. saubaleyī nibodha tvam yat tvām vakṣyāmi suvrate
tvatsamā na asti loke asmin na adya sīmantinī śubhe
56. saubaleyī suvrate śubhe tvam yat tvām vakṣyāmi
nibodha loke asmin adya tvatsamā sīmantinī na asti
56. O daughter of Subala (saubaleyī), O virtuous one (suvrate), O auspicious lady (śubhe), understand what I will tell you. In this world, there is no woman equal to you.
जानामि च यथा राज्ञि सभायां मम संनिधौ ।
धर्मार्थसहितं वाक्यमुभयोः पक्षयोर्हितम् ।
उक्तवत्यसि कल्याणि न च ते तनयैः श्रुतम् ॥५७॥
57. jānāmi ca yathā rājñi sabhāyāṁ mama saṁnidhau ,
dharmārthasahitaṁ vākyamubhayoḥ pakṣayorhitam ,
uktavatyasi kalyāṇi na ca te tanayaiḥ śrutam.
57. jānāmi ca yathā rājñi sabhāyām mama
saṃnidhau dharma-artha-sahitam vākyam
ubhayoḥ pakṣayoḥ hitam uktavatī
asi kalyāṇi na ca te tanayaiḥ śrutam
57. rājñi kalyāṇi ca jānāmi yathā mama saṃnidhau sabhāyām ubhayoḥ pakṣayoḥ hitam dharma-artha-sahitam vākyam asi uktavatī.
ca te tanayaiḥ na śrutam.
57. O queen, I know how, in the assembly and in my presence, you, O blessed one, spoke words that were beneficial to both sides and aligned with natural law (dharma) and purpose. However, those words were not heeded by your sons.
दुर्योधनस्त्वया चोक्तो जयार्थी परुषं वचः ।
शृणु मूढ वचो मह्यं यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥५८॥
58. duryodhanastvayā cokto jayārthī paruṣaṁ vacaḥ ,
śṛṇu mūḍha vaco mahyaṁ yato dharmastato jayaḥ.
58. duryodhanaḥ tvayā ca uktaḥ jaya-arthī paruṣam vacaḥ
śṛṇu mūḍha vacaḥ mahyam yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
58. ca tvayā duryodhanaḥ jaya-arthī uktaḥ paruṣam vacaḥ (iti).
mūḍha mahyam vacaḥ śṛṇu: yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ.
58. You also spoke harsh words to Duryodhana, O seeker of victory: "Listen, O fool, to my words: where there is natural law (dharma), there is victory."
तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं तव वाक्यं नृपात्मजे ।
एवं विदित्वा कल्याणि मा स्म शोके मनः कृथाः ।
पाण्डवानां विनाशाय मा ते बुद्धिः कदाचन ॥५९॥
59. tadidaṁ samanuprāptaṁ tava vākyaṁ nṛpātmaje ,
evaṁ viditvā kalyāṇi mā sma śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ vināśāya mā te buddhiḥ kadācana.

59. O daughter of a king, that very statement of yours has now come to pass. Therefore, knowing this, O blessed one, do not let your mind be steeped in sorrow. And may your intellect (buddhi) never, ever be inclined towards the destruction of the Pandavas.
शक्ता चासि महाभागे पृथिवीं सचराचराम् ।
चक्षुषा क्रोधदीप्तेन निर्दग्धुं तपसो बलात् ॥६०॥
60. śaktā cāsi mahābhāge pṛthivīṁ sacarācarām ,
cakṣuṣā krodhadīptena nirdagdhuṁ tapaso balāt.

60. O greatly fortunate one, you are capable of burning up this entire earth, with all its moving and unmoving beings, through the power of your asceticism (tapas) and with an eye blazing with wrath.
वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा गान्धारी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि केशव ॥६१॥
61. vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā gāndhārī vākyamabravīt ,
evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi keśava.

61. Having heard the words of Vasudeva, Gandhari spoke a statement: "It is indeed so, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), O Keshava, as you say."
आधिभिर्दह्यमानाया मतिः संचलिता मम ।
सा मे व्यवस्थिता श्रुत्वा तव वाक्यं जनार्दन ॥६२॥
62. ādhibhirdahyamānāyā matiḥ saṁcalitā mama ,
sā me vyavasthitā śrutvā tava vākyaṁ janārdana.

62. My mind (mati) was agitated, being tormented by mental anguish (ādhibhiḥ). But having heard your words, O Janardana, that mind of mine has now become steady.
राज्ञस्त्वन्धस्य वृद्धस्य हतपुत्रस्य केशव ।
त्वं गतिः सह तैर्वीरैः पाण्डवैर्द्विपदां वर ॥६३॥
63. rājñastvandhasya vṛddhasya hataputrasya keśava ,
tvaṁ gatiḥ saha tairvīraiḥ pāṇḍavairdvipadāṁ vara.
63. rājñaḥ tu andhasya vṛddhasya hata-putrasya keśava
tvam gatiḥ saha taiḥ vīraiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ dvi-padām vara

63. But for the blind, aged king (rājñaḥ) whose sons have been slain, O Keshava, you are the refuge (gati), along with those brave Pāṇḍavas, O best among men (dvipadām vara).
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं मुखं प्रच्छाद्य वाससा ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्ता गान्धारी प्ररुरोद ह ॥६४॥
64. etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ mukhaṁ pracchādya vāsasā ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptā gāndhārī praruroda ha.

putra-śokābhisaṃtaptā gāndhārī praruroda ha

64. Having spoken these words, Gandhari, tormented by the grief for her sons, covered her face with a cloth and indeed wept.
तत एनां महाबाहुः केशवः शोककर्शिताम् ।
हेतुकारणसंयुक्तैर्वाक्यैराश्वासयत्प्रभुः ॥६५॥
65. tata enāṁ mahābāhuḥ keśavaḥ śokakarśitām ,
hetukāraṇasaṁyuktairvākyairāśvāsayatprabhuḥ.

65. Then, the mighty-armed Lord Keśava consoled her, who was emaciated by grief, with logical and reasoned words.
समाश्वास्य च गान्धारीं धृतराष्ट्रं च माधवः ।
द्रौणेः संकल्पितं भावमन्वबुध्यत केशवः ॥६६॥
66. samāśvāsya ca gāndhārīṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca mādhavaḥ ,
drauṇeḥ saṁkalpitaṁ bhāvamanvabudhyata keśavaḥ.

66. And having consoled Gāndhārī and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Mādhava (Keśava) then perceived the intention conceived by Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā).
ततस्त्वरित उत्थाय पादौ मूर्ध्ना प्रणम्य च ।
द्वैपायनस्य राजेन्द्र ततः कौरवमब्रवीत् ॥६७॥
67. tatastvarita utthāya pādau mūrdhnā praṇamya ca ,
dvaipāyanasya rājendra tataḥ kauravamabravīt.

67. Then, O king, having quickly risen and bowed his head at Dvīpāyana's feet, he then spoke to the Kaurava (Dhṛtarāṣṭra).
आपृच्छे त्वां कुरुश्रेष्ठ मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ।
द्रौणेः पापोऽस्त्यभिप्रायस्तेनास्मि सहसोत्थितः ।
पाण्डवानां वधे रात्रौ बुद्धिस्तेन प्रदर्शिता ॥६८॥
68. āpṛcche tvāṁ kuruśreṣṭha mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ,
drauṇeḥ pāpo'styabhiprāyastenāsmi sahasotthitaḥ ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ vadhe rātrau buddhistena pradarśitā.

68. O best of Kurus, I bid you farewell. Do not let your mind succumb to grief. Droṇa's son has a wicked intention, and that is why I have risen so abruptly. A plan for the nocturnal slaughter of the Pāṇḍavas has been revealed by him.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं गान्धार्या सहितोऽब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महाबाहुः केशवं केशिसूदनम् ॥६९॥
69. etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ gāndhāryā sahito'bravīt ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahābāhuḥ keśavaṁ keśisūdanam.

69. Having heard this speech, the mighty-armed Dhritarashtra, accompanied by Gandhari, spoke to Keshava, the slayer of Keshi.
शीघ्रं गच्छ महाबाहो पाण्डवान्परिपालय ।
भूयस्त्वया समेष्यामि क्षिप्रमेव जनार्दन ।
प्रायात्ततस्तु त्वरितो दारुकेण सहाच्युतः ॥७०॥
70. śīghraṁ gaccha mahābāho pāṇḍavānparipālaya ,
bhūyastvayā sameṣyāmi kṣiprameva janārdana ,
prāyāttatastu tvarito dārukeṇa sahācyutaḥ.

70. (Dhritarashtra said:) 'Go quickly, O mighty-armed (mahābāho) Janardana, and protect the Pandavas. I shall meet with you again very soon.' Then Acyuta (Krishna), swiftly, with Daruka, departed.
वासुदेवे गते राजन्धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ।
आश्वासयदमेयात्मा व्यासो लोकनमस्कृतः ॥७१॥
71. vāsudeve gate rājandhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janeśvaram ,
āśvāsayadameyātmā vyāso lokanamaskṛtaḥ.

71. O King, when Vasudeva (Krishna) had departed, Vyasa, whose soul was immeasurable (ameyātmā) and who was revered by the world, comforted Dhritarashtra, the lord of the people (janeśvaram).
वासुदेवोऽपि धर्मात्मा कृतकृत्यो जगाम ह ।
शिबिरं हास्तिनपुराद्दिदृक्षुः पाण्डवान्नृप ॥७२॥
72. vāsudevo'pi dharmātmā kṛtakṛtyo jagāma ha ,
śibiraṁ hāstinapurāddidṛkṣuḥ pāṇḍavānnṛpa.

72. O King, the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) Vasudeva (Krishna), having accomplished his task, indeed departed from Hastinapura to the camp, desiring to see the Pandavas.
आगम्य शिबिरं रात्रौ सोऽभ्यगच्छत पाण्डवान् ।
तच्च तेभ्यः समाख्याय सहितस्तैः समाविशत् ॥७३॥
73. āgamya śibiraṁ rātrau so'bhyagacchata pāṇḍavān ,
tacca tebhyaḥ samākhyāya sahitastaiḥ samāviśat.

73. He arrived at the camp during the night, approached the Pāṇḍavas, and after narrating that incident to them, he joined them in sitting down.
