1.
Janamejaya said: "For what reason did Yudhishthira, that tiger among kings and king of (dharma) righteousness, send Vasudeva (Krishna), the tormentor of enemies, to Gandhari?"
यदा पूर्वं गतः कृष्णः शमार्थं कौरवान्प्रति ।

2.
Previously, when Krishna went to the Kauravas for the sake of peace, and he did not achieve that desired outcome, then this war occurred.

3.
Indeed, when the warriors were slain, and Duryodhana was similarly killed, and the earth, through the war, had been made free of rivals for the Pandava (Yudhishthira)...
विद्रुते शिबिरे शून्ये प्राप्ते यशसि चोत्तमे ।

4.
When the camp was deserted and empty, and supreme glory had been attained, what indeed was that reason, O brahmin, for which Krishna went again?
न चैतत्कारणं ब्रह्मन्नल्पं वै प्रतिभाति मे ।

5.
And this cause, O Brahmin, indeed seems insignificant to me, given that Janārdana himself, whose nature (ātman) is immeasurable, arrived there.

6.
O best of the priests (adhvaryu), indeed explain everything to me truthfully and completely, and disclose, O Brahmin, whatever the cause (kāraṇa) is here regarding the ascertainment of this matter.

Vaiśampaayana said: "This inquiry is fitting for you, O king (pārthiva), because you ask me. Therefore, I will explain that to you completely and truthfully (yathāvat), O best of the Bharatas."

8.
O King, having seen the mighty son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Duryodhana, killed by Bhīmasena in battle, after he had violated the agreement (samaya)...

9.
O Bhārata, O great king, then great fear entered Yudhiṣṭhira upon seeing (Duryodhana) struck unlawfully in the mace-fight.

10.
Reflecting on the highly revered Gāndhārī, who is endowed with intense asceticism (tapas), he (Yudhiṣṭhira wondered if) she, possessed of such fierce asceticism (tapas), might even incinerate the three worlds.
तस्य चिन्तयमानस्य बुद्धिः समभवत्तदा ।

11.
Then, as he (Yudhiṣṭhira) was reflecting, this idea arose in his mind: Gāndhārī, who is blazing with anger, must first be appeased.
सा हि पुत्रवधं श्रुत्वा कृतमस्माभिरीदृशम् ।

12.
Indeed, upon hearing of the killing of her sons, and of such a deed (as this) committed by us, she, enraged, will incinerate us with her mental fire.

13.
How will Gandhari endure this intense sorrow, having heard that her son, who fought fairly, was slain by deceit?

14.
Having pondered thus in many ways, and filled with fear and sorrow, King Yudhishthira (Dharmarāja) addressed these words to Vasudeva (Krishna).

15.
O Govinda, O Acyuta, by your grace, this kingdom, free from enemies and unattainable even by thought (manas), has been obtained by us here.

O mighty-armed one, O delight of the Yadus, the immense destruction in that hair-raising battle was directly witnessed by me and brought about by you.

17.
Just as formerly, in the war between the gods and asuras, help was given by you for the destruction of the enemies of the immortals, and those enemies of the wise were slain.

Similarly, O mighty-armed (mahābāho) and infallible one (acyuta), such help has been given to us, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi (vārṣṇeya), because we are sustained by your charioteering.

If you were not the protector of Arjuna (phālguna) in this great war, how could this ocean of strength (balārṇava) possibly be conquered in battle?

There were numerous blows from maces, and also strikes from iron clubs; with spears (śakti), "bhiṇḍipālas" (a type of javelin), and lances, along with axes.

O mighty-armed (Mahabaho) Madhava, indeed, understand Gandhari's anger. For that illustrious lady (Mahabhaga) is constantly emaciated by severe asceticism (tapas).

For a moment, having released the tears born of sorrow, and then having washed his eyes with water and performed the ritual sipping of water (ācamana) as prescribed, the subduer of enemies spoke humble words to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

What else can there be but the conjunction of time, for destiny is indeed the supreme resort. And, O great king, do not attribute blame to the Pāṇḍavas.

There is not even a slight transgression on the part of the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, O scorcher of foes, whether by virtue of natural law (dharma), justice, or affection.

Therefore, realizing all this to be the consequence of your own faults, you should not harbor malice towards the sons of Pāṇḍu.

Today, your family (kula), your lineage (vaṃśa), and the ancestral offerings (piṇḍa), as well as any benefits gained through sons, are all dependent on the Pandavas; the same applies to Gandhari.

O great king (mahārāja), having thus spoken to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Kṛṣṇa, the best of the Yadus (yadūttama), then addressed the sorrow-emaciated Gāndhārī with supreme words.

57.
O queen, I know how, in the assembly and in my presence, you, O blessed one, spoke words that were beneficial to both sides and aligned with natural law (dharma) and purpose. However, those words were not heeded by your sons.
