वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः स्रस्तोत्तरपटः सप्रस्वेदः सवेपथुः ।
विवेशाधिरथो रङ्गं यष्टिप्राणो ह्वयन्निव ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ srastottarapaṭaḥ saprasvedaḥ savepathuḥ ,
viveśādhiratho raṅgaṁ yaṣṭiprāṇo hvayanniva.

sa-vepathuḥ viveśa adhirathaḥ raṅgam yaṣṭi-prāṇaḥ hvayan iva
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Adhiratha entered the arena, his upper garment (uttarapaṭa) having slipped, sweating and trembling, leaning on a staff, as if he were calling out.
तमालोक्य धनुस्त्यक्त्वा पितृगौरवयन्त्रितः ।
कर्णोऽभिषेकार्द्रशिराः शिरसा समवन्दत ॥२॥
2. tamālokya dhanustyaktvā pitṛgauravayantritaḥ ,
karṇo'bhiṣekārdraśirāḥ śirasā samavandata.
2. tam ālokya dhanuḥ tyaktvā pitṛ-gaurava-yantritaḥ
karṇaḥ abhiṣeka-ārdra-śirāḥ śirasā samavandata
2. Seeing him, Karna, constrained by reverence for his father, and whose head was still wet from the anointing (abhiṣeka) ceremony, cast aside his bow and bowed down with his head.
ततः पादाववच्छाद्य पटान्तेन ससंभ्रमः ।
पुत्रेति परिपूर्णार्थमब्रवीद्रथसारथिः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ pādāvavacchādya paṭāntena sasaṁbhramaḥ ,
putreti paripūrṇārthamabravīdrathasārathiḥ.
3. tataḥ pādau avacchādya paṭa-antena sa-saṃbhramaḥ
putra iti paripūrṇa-artham abravīt ratha-sārathiḥ
3. Then the charioteer, with agitation, covered Karna's feet with the edge of his garment and meaningfully said, "O son!"
परिष्वज्य च तस्याथ मूर्धानं स्नेहविक्लवः ।
अङ्गराज्याभिषेकार्द्रमश्रुभिः सिषिचे पुनः ॥४॥
4. pariṣvajya ca tasyātha mūrdhānaṁ snehaviklavaḥ ,
aṅgarājyābhiṣekārdramaśrubhiḥ siṣice punaḥ.
4. pariṣvajya ca tasya atha mūrdhānam sneha-viklavaḥ
aṅga-rājya-abhiṣeka-ārdram aśrubhiḥ sisiñce punaḥ
4. And then, overwhelmed by affection, having embraced his head, Adhiratha again bathed (sprinkled) it with tears, his head still wet from the anointing (abhiṣeka) as the king of Aṅga.
तं दृष्ट्वा सूतपुत्रोऽयमिति निश्चित्य पाण्डवः ।
भीमसेनस्तदा वाक्यमब्रवीत्प्रहसन्निव ॥५॥
5. taṁ dṛṣṭvā sūtaputro'yamiti niścitya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
bhīmasenastadā vākyamabravītprahasanniva.
5. tam dṛṣṭvā sūtaputraḥ ayam iti niścitya pāṇḍavaḥ
| bhīmasenaḥ tadā vākyam abravīt prahasan iva
5. When the Pandava Bhimasena saw him and determined, 'This is the son of a charioteer,' he then spoke words, as if laughing.
न त्वमर्हसि पार्थेन सूतपुत्र रणे वधम् ।
कुलस्य सदृशस्तूर्णं प्रतोदो गृह्यतां त्वया ॥६॥
6. na tvamarhasi pārthena sūtaputra raṇe vadham ,
kulasya sadṛśastūrṇaṁ pratodo gṛhyatāṁ tvayā.
6. na tvam arhasi pārthena sūtaputra raṇe vadham |
kulasya sadṛśaḥ tūrṇam pratodaḥ gṛhyatām tvayā
6. O son of a charioteer, you are not worthy of being killed in battle by Partha (Arjuna). Rather, quickly take up a goad, which is appropriate for your family (kula).
अङ्गराज्यं च नार्हस्त्वमुपभोक्तुं नराधम ।
श्वा हुताशसमीपस्थं पुरोडाशमिवाध्वरे ॥७॥
7. aṅgarājyaṁ ca nārhastvamupabhoktuṁ narādhama ,
śvā hutāśasamīpasthaṁ puroḍāśamivādhvare.
7. aṅgarājyam ca na arhasi tvam upabhoktum narādhama
| śvā hutāśasamīpastham puroḍāśam iva adhvare
7. O lowest of men, you are not worthy to enjoy the kingdom of Anga, just as a dog is unworthy of a sacrificial cake (puroḍāśa) placed near the fire (hutāśa) in a ritual (adhvara).
एवमुक्तस्ततः कर्णः किंचित्प्रस्फुरिताधरः ।
गगनस्थं विनिःश्वस्य दिवाकरमुदैक्षत ॥८॥
8. evamuktastataḥ karṇaḥ kiṁcitprasphuritādharaḥ ,
gaganasthaṁ viniḥśvasya divākaramudaikṣata.
8. evam uktaḥ tataḥ karṇaḥ kiñcit prasphuritādharaḥ
| gaganastham viniḥśvasya divākaram udaikṣata
8. Upon being spoken to in this manner, Karna's lips trembled slightly. He then sighed deeply and gazed up at the sun (divākara) in the sky.
ततो दुर्योधनः कोपादुत्पपात महाबलः ।
भ्रातृपद्मवनात्तस्मान्मदोत्कट इव द्विपः ॥९॥
9. tato duryodhanaḥ kopādutpapāta mahābalaḥ ,
bhrātṛpadmavanāttasmānmadotkaṭa iva dvipaḥ.
9. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ kopāt utpapāta mahābalaḥ |
bhrātṛpadmavanāt tasmāt madotkaṭaḥ iva dvipaḥ
9. Then, the mighty Duryodhana, seized by anger, sprang up from that lotus-forest formed by his brothers, just like an elephant (dvipa) in rut (madotkaṭa).
सोऽब्रवीद्भीमकर्माणं भीमसेनमवस्थितम् ।
वृकोदर न युक्तं ते वचनं वक्तुमीदृशम् ॥१०॥
10. so'bravīdbhīmakarmāṇaṁ bhīmasenamavasthitam ,
vṛkodara na yuktaṁ te vacanaṁ vaktumīdṛśam.
10. saḥ abravīt bhīmakarmāṇam bhīmasenam avasthitam
vṛkodara na yuktam te vacanam vaktum īdṛśam
10. He spoke to Bhimasena, who was standing there performing terrible deeds: 'O Vṛkodara, it is not appropriate for you to utter such words.'
क्षत्रियाणां बलं ज्येष्ठं योद्धव्यं क्षत्रबन्धुना ।
शूराणां च नदीनां च प्रभवा दुर्विदाः किल ॥११॥
11. kṣatriyāṇāṁ balaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ yoddhavyaṁ kṣatrabandhunā ,
śūrāṇāṁ ca nadīnāṁ ca prabhavā durvidāḥ kila.
11. kṣatriyāṇām balam jyeṣṭham yoddhavyam kṣatrabandhunā
śūrāṇām ca nadīnām ca prabhavāḥ durvidāḥ kila
11. The strength of warriors (kṣatriyas) is supreme; a kṣatriya by birth should certainly fight. Indeed, the origins of heroes and rivers are said to be difficult to ascertain.
सलिलादुत्थितो वह्निर्येन व्याप्तं चराचरम् ।
दधीचस्यास्थितो वज्रं कृतं दानवसूदनम् ॥१२॥
12. salilādutthito vahniryena vyāptaṁ carācaram ,
dadhīcasyāsthito vajraṁ kṛtaṁ dānavasūdanam.
12. salilāt utthitaḥ vahniḥ yena vyāptam carācaram
dadhīcasya asthitaḥ vajram kṛtam dānavasūdanam
12. Fire (vahni) arose from water, by which the entire moving and unmoving world is pervaded. The thunderbolt (vajra), made from Dadhīci's bones, was fashioned as the destroyer of Dānavas.
आग्नेयः कृत्तिकापुत्रो रौद्रो गाङ्गेय इत्यपि ।
श्रूयते भगवान्देवः सर्वगुह्यमयो गुहः ॥१३॥
13. āgneyaḥ kṛttikāputro raudro gāṅgeya ityapi ,
śrūyate bhagavāndevaḥ sarvaguhyamayo guhaḥ.
13. āgneyaḥ kṛttikāputraḥ raudraḥ gāṅgeyaḥ iti api
śrūyate bhagavān devaḥ sarvaguhyamayaḥ guhaḥ
13. Guha (Skanda/Kārtikeya) is also known as the son of Agni, the son of Kṛttikā, the son of Rudra, and the son of Gaṅgā. He is the divine lord, embodying all secrets.
क्षत्रियाभ्यश्च ये जाता ब्राह्मणास्ते च विश्रुताः ।
आचार्यः कलशाज्जातः शरस्तम्बाद्गुरुः कृपः ।
भवतां च यथा जन्म तदप्यागमितं नृपैः ॥१४॥
14. kṣatriyābhyaśca ye jātā brāhmaṇāste ca viśrutāḥ ,
ācāryaḥ kalaśājjātaḥ śarastambādguruḥ kṛpaḥ ,
bhavatāṁ ca yathā janma tadapyāgamitaṁ nṛpaiḥ.
14. kṣatriyābhyaḥ ca ye jātāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ
te ca viśrutāḥ ācāryaḥ kalaśāt jātaḥ
śarastambāt guruḥ kṛpaḥ bhavatām ca
yathā janma tat api āgamitam nṛpaiḥ
14. And those Brahmins born from kṣatriya women are also renowned. The preceptor (ācārya) (Droṇa) was born from a pot, and the preceptor (guru) Kṛpa from a clump of reeds. Indeed, the account of your birth has also been learned by kings.
सकुण्डलं सकवचं दिव्यलक्षणलक्षितम् ।
कथमादित्यसंकाशं मृगी व्याघ्रं जनिष्यति ॥१५॥
15. sakuṇḍalaṁ sakavacaṁ divyalakṣaṇalakṣitam ,
kathamādityasaṁkāśaṁ mṛgī vyāghraṁ janiṣyati.
15. sakuṇḍalam sakavacam divyalakṣaṇalakṣitam
katham ādityasaṃkāśam mṛgī vyāghram janiṣyati
15. How can a doe give birth to a tiger, especially one who shines like the sun, is adorned with earrings and armor, and is marked by divine characteristics?
पृथिवीराज्यमर्होऽयं नाङ्गराज्यं नरेश्वरः ।
अनेन बाहुवीर्येण मया चाज्ञानुवर्तिना ॥१६॥
16. pṛthivīrājyamarho'yaṁ nāṅgarājyaṁ nareśvaraḥ ,
anena bāhuvīryeṇa mayā cājñānuvartinā.
16. pṛthivīrājyam arhaḥ ayam na aṅgarājyam nareśvaraḥ
anena bāhuvīryeṇa mayā ca ājñānuvartinā
16. O king, this man is worthy of dominion over the entire earth, not just the kingdom of Anga. This is due to his arm-power and because I am obedient to your command.
यस्य वा मनुजस्येदं न क्षान्तं मद्विचेष्टितम् ।
रथमारुह्य पद्भ्यां वा विनामयतु कार्मुकम् ॥१७॥
17. yasya vā manujasyedaṁ na kṣāntaṁ madviceṣṭitam ,
rathamāruhya padbhyāṁ vā vināmayatu kārmukam.
17. yasya vā manusyasya idam na kṣāntam madviceṣṭitam
ratham āruhya padbhyām vā vināmayatu kārmukam
17. If any man does not tolerate this deed of mine, let him ascend a chariot or come on foot and bend his bow.
ततः सर्वस्य रङ्गस्य हाहाकारो महानभूत् ।
साधुवादानुसंबद्धः सूर्यश्चास्तमुपागमत् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sarvasya raṅgasya hāhākāro mahānabhūt ,
sādhuvādānusaṁbaddhaḥ sūryaścāstamupāgamat.
18. tataḥ sarvasya raṅgasya hāhākāraḥ mahān abhūt
sādhuvādānusaṃbaddhaḥ sūryaḥ ca astam upāgamat
18. Then, a great cry of amazement filled the entire arena, mixed with shouts of 'bravo!' And the sun also set.
ततो दुर्योधनः कर्णमालम्ब्याथ करे नृप ।
दीपिकाग्निकृतालोकस्तस्माद्रङ्गाद्विनिर्ययौ ॥१९॥
19. tato duryodhanaḥ karṇamālambyātha kare nṛpa ,
dīpikāgnikṛtālokastasmādraṅgādviniryayau.
19. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ karṇam ālambya atha kare nṛpa
dīpikāgnikṛtālokaḥ tasmāt raṅgāt viniryayau
19. Then, O king, Duryodhana, taking Karna's hand and illuminated by the light of torches, departed from that arena.
पाण्डवाश्च सहद्रोणाः सकृपाश्च विशां पते ।
भीष्मेण सहिताः सर्वे ययुः स्वं स्वं निवेशनम् ॥२०॥
20. pāṇḍavāśca sahadroṇāḥ sakṛpāśca viśāṁ pate ,
bhīṣmeṇa sahitāḥ sarve yayuḥ svaṁ svaṁ niveśanam.
20. pāṇḍavāḥ ca sahadroṇāḥ sakṛpāḥ ca viśām pate
bhīṣmeṇa sahitāḥ sarve yayuḥ svam svam niveśanam
20. O lord of the people, all the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by Droṇa, Kṛpa, and Bhīṣma, went to their respective dwellings.
अर्जुनेति जनः कश्चित्कश्चित्कर्णेति भारत ।
कश्चिद्दुर्योधनेत्येवं ब्रुवन्तः प्रस्थितास्तदा ॥२१॥
21. arjuneti janaḥ kaścitkaścitkarṇeti bhārata ,
kaścidduryodhanetyevaṁ bruvantaḥ prasthitāstadā.
21. arjuna iti janaḥ kaścit kaścit karṇa iti bhārata
kaścit duryodhana iti evam bruvantaḥ prasthitāḥ tadā
21. O Bhārata, then some people departed saying "Arjuna," some "Karṇa," and others "Duryodhana."
कुन्त्याश्च प्रत्यभिज्ञाय दिव्यलक्षणसूचितम् ।
पुत्रमङ्गेश्वरं स्नेहाच्छन्ना प्रीतिरवर्धत ॥२२॥
22. kuntyāśca pratyabhijñāya divyalakṣaṇasūcitam ,
putramaṅgeśvaraṁ snehācchannā prītiravardhata.
22. kuntyāḥ ca pratyabhijñāya divyalakṣaṇasūcitam
putram aṅgeśvaram snehāt channā prītiḥ avardhata
22. And Kuntī, having recognized her son, the lord of Aṅga (Karṇa), who was indicated by divine marks, felt her hidden affection (love) grow.
दुर्योधनस्यापि तदा कर्णमासाद्य पार्थिव ।
भयमर्जुनसांजातं क्षिप्रमन्तरधीयत ॥२३॥
23. duryodhanasyāpi tadā karṇamāsādya pārthiva ,
bhayamarjunasāṁjātaṁ kṣipramantaradhīyata.
23. duryodhanasya api tadā karṇam āsādya pārthiva
bhayam arjunasaṃjātam kṣipram antaradhīyata
23. O king, then, for Duryodhana, having Karṇa by his side, the fear that had arisen concerning Arjuna quickly vanished.
स चापि वीरः कृतशस्त्रनिश्रमः परेण साम्नाभ्यवदत्सुयोधनम् ।
युधिष्ठिरस्याप्यभवत्तदा मतिर्न कर्णतुल्योऽस्ति धनुर्धरः क्षितौ ॥२४॥
24. sa cāpi vīraḥ kṛtaśastraniśramaḥ; pareṇa sāmnābhyavadatsuyodhanam ,
yudhiṣṭhirasyāpyabhavattadā mati;rna karṇatulyo'sti dhanurdharaḥ kṣitau.
24. saḥ ca api vīraḥ kṛtaśastranirśramaḥ
pareṇa sāmnā abhyavadat suyodhanam
yudhiṣṭhirasya api abhavat tadā matiḥ na
karṇatulyaḥ asti dhanurdharaḥ kṣitau
24. And that hero (Karṇa), who had thoroughly practiced with weapons, addressed Suyodhana (Duryodhana) with great gentleness. At that time, the thought also arose in Yudhiṣṭhira's mind that there was no bowman on earth equal to Karṇa.
