विदुर उवाच ।
राजन्बहुमतश्चासि त्रैलोक्यस्यापि सत्तमः ।
संभावितश्च लोकस्य संमतश्चासि भारत ॥१॥
1. vidura uvāca ,
rājanbahumataścāsi trailokyasyāpi sattamaḥ ,
saṁbhāvitaśca lokasya saṁmataścāsi bhārata.
1. vidura uvāca | rājan bahumataḥ ca asi trailokyasya api
sattamaḥ | saṃbhāvitaḥ ca lokasya saṃmataḥ ca asi bhārata
1. Vidura said: O King, you are highly regarded and considered the best even among the three worlds. O Bhārata, you are respected and approved by the people.
यत्त्वमेवंगते ब्रूयाः पश्चिमे वयसि स्थितः ।
शास्त्राद्वा सुप्रतर्काद्वा सुस्थिरः स्थविरो ह्यसि ॥२॥
2. yattvamevaṁgate brūyāḥ paścime vayasi sthitaḥ ,
śāstrādvā supratarkādvā susthiraḥ sthaviro hyasi.
2. yat tvam evamgate brūyāḥ paścime vayasi sthitaḥ |
śāstrāt vā supratarkāt vā susthiraḥ sthaviraḥ hi asi
2. Since you, situated in the last stage of life, would speak thus, you are indeed very firm and venerable, whether from scripture or from sound reasoning.
लेखाश्मनीव भाः सूर्ये महोर्मिरिव सागरे ।
धर्मस्त्वयि महान्राजन्निति व्यवसिताः प्रजाः ॥३॥
3. lekhāśmanīva bhāḥ sūrye mahormiriva sāgare ,
dharmastvayi mahānrājanniti vyavasitāḥ prajāḥ.
3. lekhā aśmanī iva bhāḥ sūrye | mahā ūrmiḥ iva sāgare
| dharmaḥ tvayi mahān rājan iti vyavasitāḥ prajāḥ
3. Just as lines are inherent in a stone, or light in the sun, or a great wave in the ocean, O King, so too, your great (dharma) (intrinsic nature) is in you. The people are convinced of this.
सदैव भावितो लोको गुणौघैस्तव पार्थिव ।
गुणानां रक्षणे नित्यं प्रयतस्व सबान्धवः ॥४॥
4. sadaiva bhāvito loko guṇaughaistava pārthiva ,
guṇānāṁ rakṣaṇe nityaṁ prayatasva sabāndhavaḥ.
4. sadā eva bhāvitaḥ lokaḥ guṇaughaiḥ tava pārthiva
guṇānām rakṣaṇe nityam prayatasva sabāndhavaḥ
4. O King, your people are always nourished by your abundant virtues. Therefore, constantly strive, along with your kinsmen, for the preservation of these virtues.
आर्जवं प्रतिपद्यस्व मा बाल्याद्बहुधा नशीः ।
राज्यं पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्च सुहृदश्चापि सुप्रियान् ॥५॥
5. ārjavaṁ pratipadyasva mā bālyādbahudhā naśīḥ ,
rājyaṁ putrāṁśca pautrāṁśca suhṛdaścāpi supriyān.
5. ārjavam pratipadyasva mā bālyāt bahudhā naśīḥ
rājyam putrān ca pautrān ca suhṛdaḥ ca api supriyān
5. Embrace integrity. Do not, due to your immaturity, perish in various ways, losing your kingdom, your sons, your grandsons, and your very dear friends.
यत्त्वं दित्ससि कृष्णाय राजन्नतिथये बहु ।
एतदन्यच्च दाशार्हः पृथिवीमपि चार्हति ॥६॥
6. yattvaṁ ditsasi kṛṣṇāya rājannatithaye bahu ,
etadanyacca dāśārhaḥ pṛthivīmapi cārhati.
6. yat tvam ditsasi kṛṣṇāya rājan atithaye bahu
etat anyat ca dāśārhaḥ pṛthivīm api ca arhati
6. O King, whatever abundant gifts you wish to give to Krishna, your guest—that, and indeed much more, the descendant of Daśārha (Kṛṣṇa) deserves, even the entire earth.
न तु त्वं धर्ममुद्दिश्य तस्य वा प्रियकारणात् ।
एतदिच्छसि कृष्णाय सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥७॥
7. na tu tvaṁ dharmamuddiśya tasya vā priyakāraṇāt ,
etadicchasi kṛṣṇāya satyenātmānamālabhe.
7. na tu tvam dharmam uddiśya tasya vā priyakāraṇāt
etat icchasi kṛṣṇāya satyena ātmānam ālabhe
7. But you do not desire this for Kṛṣṇa, prompted by (dharma) natural law or by affection for him. I swear by truth by my very self (ātman).
मायैषातत्त्वमेवैतच्छद्मैतद्भूरिदक्षिण ।
जानामि ते मतं राजन्गूढं बाह्येन कर्मणा ॥८॥
8. māyaiṣātattvamevaitacchadmaitadbhūridakṣiṇa ,
jānāmi te mataṁ rājangūḍhaṁ bāhyena karmaṇā.
8. māyā eṣā tattvam eva etat chadma etat bhūridakṣiṇa
jānāmi te matam rājan gūḍham bāhyena karmaṇā
8. O generous one, this is an illusion (māyā), indeed a mere trick. I know your intention, O king, which is hidden by your outward actions (karma).
पञ्च पञ्चैव लिप्सन्ति ग्रामकान्पाण्डवा नृप ।
न च दित्ससि तेभ्यस्तांस्तच्छमं कः करिष्यति ॥९॥
9. pañca pañcaiva lipsanti grāmakānpāṇḍavā nṛpa ,
na ca ditsasi tebhyastāṁstacchamaṁ kaḥ kariṣyati.
9. pañca pañca eva lipsanti grāmakān pāṇḍavāḥ nṛpa
na ca ditsasi tebhyaḥ tān tat śamam kaḥ kariṣyati
9. O king, the Pāṇḍavas desire merely five villages. And since you refuse to give those to them, who will bring about peace?
अर्थेन तु महाबाहुं वार्ष्णेयं त्वं जिहीर्षसि ।
अनेनैवाभ्युपायेन पाण्डवेभ्यो बिभित्ससि ॥१०॥
10. arthena tu mahābāhuṁ vārṣṇeyaṁ tvaṁ jihīrṣasi ,
anenaivābhyupāyena pāṇḍavebhyo bibhitsasi.
10. arthena tu mahābāhum vārṣṇeyam tvam jihīrṣasi
anena eva abhyupāyena pāṇḍavebhyaḥ bibhitsasi
10. Indeed, you wish to win over the mighty-armed Vārṣṇeya (Krishna) by means of wealth. And by this very strategy, you seek to separate him from the Pāṇḍavas.
न च वित्तेन शक्योऽसौ नोद्यमेन न गर्हया ।
अन्यो धनंजयात्कर्तुमेतत्तत्त्वं ब्रवीमि ते ॥११॥
11. na ca vittena śakyo'sau nodyamena na garhayā ,
anyo dhanaṁjayātkartumetattattvaṁ bravīmi te.
11. na ca vittena śakyaḥ asau na udyamena na garhayā
anyaḥ dhanañjayāt kartum etat tattvam bravīmi te
11. He (Krishna) cannot be swayed by wealth, nor by effort, nor by condemnation. No one other than Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) is capable of doing this. I tell you this truth.
वेद कृष्णस्य माहात्म्यं वेदास्य दृढभक्तिताम् ।
अत्याज्यमस्य जानामि प्राणैस्तुल्यं धनंजयम् ॥१२॥
12. veda kṛṣṇasya māhātmyaṁ vedāsya dṛḍhabhaktitām ,
atyājyamasya jānāmi prāṇaistulyaṁ dhanaṁjayam.
12. veda kṛṣṇasya māhātmyam veda asya dṛḍhabhaktitām
atyājyam asya jānāmi prāṇaiḥ tulyam dhanañjayam
12. I know the greatness of Krishna and his steadfast devotion (bhakti). I also know that this Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is indispensable to him, as dear as his own life.
अन्यत्कुम्भादपां पूर्णादन्यत्पादावसेचनात् ।
अन्यत्कुशलसंप्रश्नान्नैषिष्यति जनार्दनः ॥१३॥
13. anyatkumbhādapāṁ pūrṇādanyatpādāvasecanāt ,
anyatkuśalasaṁpraśnānnaiṣiṣyati janārdanaḥ.
13. anyat kumbhāt apām pūrṇāt anyat pādāvasecanāt
anyat kuśalasaṃpraśnāt na eṣiṣyati janārdanaḥ
13. Janardana will not desire anything other than a pitcher full of water, water for washing his feet, and an inquiry about his well-being.
यत्त्वस्य प्रियमातिथ्यं मानार्हस्य महात्मनः ।
तदस्मै क्रियतां राजन्मानार्हो हि जनार्दनः ॥१४॥
14. yattvasya priyamātithyaṁ mānārhasya mahātmanaḥ ,
tadasmai kriyatāṁ rājanmānārho hi janārdanaḥ.
14. yat tu asya priyam ātithyam mānārhasya mahātmanaḥ
tat asmai kriyatām rājan mānārhaḥ hi janārdanaḥ
14. Whatever hospitality (ātithya) is pleasing to this great-souled (mahātman) one, who is worthy of honor, O King, let that be done for him, for Janardana is indeed worthy of honor.
आशंसमानः कल्याणं कुरूनभ्येति केशवः ।
येनैव राजन्नर्थेन तदेवास्मा उपाकुरु ॥१५॥
15. āśaṁsamānaḥ kalyāṇaṁ kurūnabhyeti keśavaḥ ,
yenaiva rājannarthena tadevāsmā upākuru.
15. āśaṃsamānaḥ kalyāṇam kurūn abhyeti keśavaḥ
yena eva rājan arthena tat eva asmai upākuru
15. Kesava approaches the Kauravas, hoping for their well-being. O King, whatever purpose (artha) he has, fulfill that very purpose for him.
शममिच्छति दाशार्हस्तव दुर्योधनस्य च ।
पाण्डवानां च राजेन्द्र तदस्य वचनं कुरु ॥१६॥
16. śamamicchati dāśārhastava duryodhanasya ca ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ ca rājendra tadasya vacanaṁ kuru.
16. śamam icchati dāśārhaḥ tava duryodhanasya ca
pāṇḍavānām ca rājendra tat asya vacanam kuru
16. O king of kings, Krishna (Dāśārha) desires peace for you, for Duryodhana, and for the Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, heed his words.
पितासि राजन्पुत्रास्ते वृद्धस्त्वं शिशवः परे ।
वर्तस्व पितृवत्तेषु वर्तन्ते ते हि पुत्रवत् ॥१७॥
17. pitāsi rājanputrāste vṛddhastvaṁ śiśavaḥ pare ,
vartasva pitṛvatteṣu vartante te hi putravat.
17. pitā asi rājan putrāḥ te vṛddhaḥ tvam śiśavaḥ pare
vartasva pitṛvat teṣu vartante te hi putravat
17. O King, you are their father; you are aged, and they are young. Therefore, behave towards them like a father, for they indeed conduct themselves like sons towards you.
