The Blessed Lord said: 'I have heard Sanjaya's words, and I have heard yours as well. I know the entire intention, both theirs and yours.'

Your understanding is based on righteousness (dharma), while their minds are intent on hostility. Whatever could be obtained without a battle would be greatly agreeable to you.

3.
And indeed, O lord of the people, all those who follow the stages of life (āśrama) say that living by alms is not the prescribed action (karma) for a kṣatriya.

4.
Victory or death in battle is eternally ordained by the Creator (dhātṛ). This is the inherent constitution (svadharma) of a kṣatriya; cowardice is not commendable.

5.
Indeed, O Yudhiṣṭhira, by adopting weakness (kārpaṇya), a proper existence is not possible. O mighty-armed one, show your valor! O subduer of enemies, conquer your foes!

6.
O tormentor of foes, the Dhārtarāṣṭras are excessively greedy; they have developed strong attachments, lived together for a long time, formed alliances, and amassed power.

O lord of the people, there is no recourse by which they could achieve equality with you, for they certainly consider themselves mighty due to (allies like) Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others.

O King, O suppressor of enemies, as long as you treat these (Dhārtarāṣṭras) with mildness, they will continue to seize your kingdom.

This very situation is the reason why those Pandavas, regarding you, did not feel shame for the disgraceful act, even after such a terrible deed was committed (against them).

(You committed that act) in the presence of Bhishma (pitāmaha), Droṇa, and the wise Vidura, as well as all the principal Kuru leaders, truly seeing everything.

12.
O king, he then cheated him—the generous, gentle, self-controlled, one desiring natural law (dharma), and dutiful—by deceit in the game of dice. And the wicked, cruel one does not feel shame for that action (karma).

Delighted and boasting, he spoke along with his brothers, taunting Yudhiṣṭhira, who was accompanied by his younger siblings, with unparalleled and cruel words.

Indeed, the Pāṇḍavas possess nothing of their own here. Not even their name or lineage remains for them.

And in a long time, their defeat will come to pass. Those people, whose intrinsic nature (prakr̥ti) has been destroyed, will certainly revert to (that corrupted) nature (prakr̥ti).

Those who were assembled there, seeing you to be innocent, are now sitting in the assembly, weeping with voices choked by tears.

And those kings, along with the Brahmins, did not acclaim him. All the members of the assembly present there condemned Duryodhana.

31.
O King, when Duryodhana has been killed, what remains to be done in that state abandoned by the world? It is as if one might say, "Let whatever else needs to be done, be done!"

And I, having gone to all the Kurus, and causing them to concede (for your sake), will endeavor to establish peace and will observe their conduct.

And having gone and thoroughly observed the Kurus' disposition towards war, I shall return, O Bharata, for your victory.

I certainly desire war with the enemies in every way. Indeed, all signs are appearing to me accordingly.

Deer and birds are making dreadful noises, particularly among the elephants and horses at nightfall. Similarly, fire exhibits many terrifying forms and colors. If this dreadful destroyer of the human world is not death (antaka) itself arrived here, then what else could it be?

Having arranged weapons, armor, chariots, elephants, and banners, let all those warriors, having rested, be prepared on their elephants, horses, and chariots. O King (Narendra), ensure that all your battle provisions which are to be acquired are complete.

O King (nṛpate), Duryodhana is certainly not capable by any means of giving back this prosperous kingdom of yours, which was formerly taken away in the game of dice, while you are alive, O chief of Pandavas (pāṇḍavamukhya).
