युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
किं कर्तव्यं मनुष्येण लोकयात्राहितार्थिना ।
कथं वै लोकयात्रां तु किंशीलश्च समाचरेत् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kiṁ kartavyaṁ manuṣyeṇa lokayātrāhitārthinā ,
kathaṁ vai lokayātrāṁ tu kiṁśīlaśca samācaret.

katham vai lokayātrām tu kiṃśīlaḥ ca samācaret

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'What should a human being, who seeks welfare in their worldly life, do? And how, indeed, what kind of behavior should they adopt in their worldly affairs?'
भीष्म उवाच ।
कायेन त्रिविधं कर्म वाचा चापि चतुर्विधम् ।
मनसा त्रिविधं चैव दश कर्मपथांस्त्यजेत् ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
kāyena trividhaṁ karma vācā cāpi caturvidham ,
manasā trividhaṁ caiva daśa karmapathāṁstyajet.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca kāyena trividham karma vācā ca api
caturvidham manasā ca eva trividham daśa karmapathān tyajet
2. Bhishma said: One should renounce the ten paths of action (karma) which are of three kinds performed by the body, four kinds performed by speech, and similarly three kinds performed by the mind.
प्राणातिपातं स्तैन्यं च परदारमथापि च ।
त्रीणि पापानि कायेन सर्वतः परिवर्जयेत् ॥३॥
3. prāṇātipātaṁ stainyaṁ ca paradāramathāpi ca ,
trīṇi pāpāni kāyena sarvataḥ parivarjayet.
3. prāṇātipātam stainyam ca paradāram atha api
ca trīṇi pāpāni kāyena sarvataḥ parivarjayet
3. One should completely avoid these three sins performed by the body: causing injury to living beings, theft, and adultery.
असत्प्रलापं पारुष्यं पैशुन्यमनृतं तथा ।
चत्वारि वाचा राजेन्द्र न जल्पेन्नानुचिन्तयेत् ॥४॥
4. asatpralāpaṁ pāruṣyaṁ paiśunyamanṛtaṁ tathā ,
catvāri vācā rājendra na jalpennānucintayet.
4. asatpralāpam pāruṣyam paiśunyam anṛtam tathā
catvāri vācā rājendra na jalpet na anucintayet
4. O king of kings, one should neither speak nor even contemplate these four [sins] by speech: idle chatter, harshness, backbiting, and falsehood.
अनभिध्या परस्वेषु सर्वसत्त्वेषु सौहृदम् ।
कर्मणां फलमस्तीति त्रिविधं मनसा चरेत् ॥५॥
5. anabhidhyā parasveṣu sarvasattveṣu sauhṛdam ,
karmaṇāṁ phalamastīti trividhaṁ manasā caret.
5. anabhidhyā parasveṣu sarvasattveṣu sauhṛdam
karmaṇām phalam asti iti trividham manasā caret
5. One should cultivate these three by the mind: non-covetousness regarding others' possessions, friendliness towards all beings, and the belief that there is a consequence for actions (karma).
तस्माद्वाक्कायमनसा नाचरेदशुभं नरः ।
शुभाशुभान्याचरन्हि तस्य तस्याश्नुते फलम् ॥६॥
6. tasmādvākkāyamanasā nācaredaśubhaṁ naraḥ ,
śubhāśubhānyācaranhi tasya tasyāśnute phalam.
6. tasmāt vākkāyamanasā na ācaret aśubham naraḥ
śubhāśubhāni ācaran hi tasya tasya aśnute phalam
6. naraḥ tasmāt vākkāyamanasā aśubham na ācaret hi
śubhāśubhāni ācaran tasya tasya phalam aśnute
6. Therefore, a person should not commit unwholesome acts through speech, body, or mind. Indeed, by performing both wholesome and unwholesome acts, one experiences the fruit of each (karma).
