संजय उवाच ।
वृषसेनं हतं दृष्ट्वा शोकामर्षसमन्वितः ।
मुक्त्वा शोकोद्भवं वारि नेत्राभ्यां सहसा वृषः ॥१॥

vṛṣasenaṁ hataṁ dṛṣṭvā śokāmarṣasamanvitaḥ ,

1. Sañjaya said: Having seen Vṛṣasena killed, Vṛṣa (Karṇa), filled with sorrow and indignation, suddenly shed tears born of grief from his eyes.
रथेन कर्णस्तेजस्वी जगामाभिमुखो रिपून् ।
युद्धायामर्षताम्राक्षः समाहूय धनंजयम् ॥२॥
2. rathena karṇastejasvī jagāmābhimukho ripūn ,
yuddhāyāmarṣatāmrākṣaḥ samāhūya dhanaṁjayam.

2. The splendid Karṇa, whose eyes were reddish from indignation for battle, went towards the enemies in his chariot, having challenged Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
तौ रथौ सूर्यसंकाशौ वैयाघ्रपरिवारणौ ।
समेतौ ददृशुस्तत्र द्वाविवार्कौ समागतौ ॥३॥
3. tau rathau sūryasaṁkāśau vaiyāghraparivāraṇau ,
sametau dadṛśustatra dvāvivārkau samāgatau.

3. Those two chariots, resembling the sun and covered with tiger skins, were seen there, like two suns that have come together.
श्वेताश्वौ पुरुषादित्यावास्थितावरिमर्दनौ ।
शुशुभाते महात्मानौ चन्द्रादित्यौ यथा दिवि ॥४॥
4. śvetāśvau puruṣādityāvāsthitāvarimardanau ,
śuśubhāte mahātmānau candrādityau yathā divi.

4. The two great-souled (mahātman) ones, riding white horses and destroying enemies, shone like the moon and the sun in the sky.
तौ दृष्ट्वा विस्मयं जग्मुः सर्वभूतानि मारिष ।
त्रैलोक्यविजये यत्ताविन्द्रवैरोचनाविव ॥५॥
5. tau dṛṣṭvā vismayaṁ jagmuḥ sarvabhūtāni māriṣa ,
trailokyavijaye yattāvindravairocanāviva.

5. O respected one, upon seeing those two, all beings were filled with wonder, for they were striving for victory as fiercely as Indra and Virocana's son (Bali) once did in their conquest of the three worlds.
रथज्यातलनिर्ह्रादैर्बाणशङ्खरवैरपि ।
तौ रथावभिधावन्तौ समालोक्य महीक्षिताम् ॥६॥
6. rathajyātalanirhrādairbāṇaśaṅkharavairapi ,
tau rathāvabhidhāvantau samālokya mahīkṣitām.

6. Having thoroughly observed those two chariots of the kings, rushing forward with the mighty sounds of bowstrings, hand-slaps, arrows, and conches...
ध्वजौ च दृष्ट्वा संसक्तौ विस्मयः समपद्यत ।
हस्तिकक्ष्यां च कर्णस्य वानरं च किरीटिनः ॥७॥
7. dhvajau ca dṛṣṭvā saṁsaktau vismayaḥ samapadyata ,
hastikakṣyāṁ ca karṇasya vānaraṁ ca kirīṭinaḥ.

7. And when they observed the two banners, Karna's (displaying) the elephant emblem and the diadem-wearer's (Arjuna's) (displaying) the monkey, in close contact, astonishment arose.
तौ रथौ संप्रसक्तौ च दृष्ट्वा भारत पार्थिवाः ।
सिंहनादरवांश्चक्रुः साधुवादांश्च पुष्कलान् ॥८॥
8. tau rathau saṁprasaktau ca dṛṣṭvā bhārata pārthivāḥ ,
siṁhanādaravāṁścakruḥ sādhuvādāṁśca puṣkalān.

8. O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), having seen those two chariots closely engaged, the kings let out lion-like roars and abundant shouts of approval.
श्रुत्वा तु द्वैरथं ताभ्यां तत्र योधाः समन्ततः ।
चक्रुर्बाहुवलं चैव तथा चेलवलं महत् ॥९॥
9. śrutvā tu dvairathaṁ tābhyāṁ tatra yodhāḥ samantataḥ ,
cakrurbāhuvalaṁ caiva tathā celavalaṁ mahat.

9. Upon hearing about the chariot duel between those two, warriors from all sides then displayed their physical strength and also created a great uproar.
आजग्मुः कुरवस्तत्र वादित्रानुगतास्तदा ।
कर्णं प्रहर्षयन्तश्च शङ्खान्दध्मुश्च पुष्कलान् ॥१०॥
10. ājagmuḥ kuravastatra vāditrānugatāstadā ,
karṇaṁ praharṣayantaśca śaṅkhāndadhmuśca puṣkalān.

10. Then, the Kurus arrived there, accompanied by musical instruments, delighting Karṇa, and they blew many loud conches.
तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे हर्षयन्तो धनंजयम् ।
तूर्यशङ्खनिनादेन दिशः सर्वा व्यनादयन् ॥११॥
11. tathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve harṣayanto dhanaṁjayam ,
tūryaśaṅkhaninādena diśaḥ sarvā vyanādayan.
11. tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve harṣayantaḥ dhanañjayam
tūryaśaṅkhaninādena diśaḥ sarvāḥ vyanādayan

11. In the same way, all the Pāṇḍavas, encouraging Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), made all directions resound with the sound of trumpets and conches.
क्ष्वेडितास्फोटितोत्क्रुष्टैस्तुमुलं सर्वतोऽभवत् ।
बाहुघोषाश्च वीराणां कर्णार्जुनसमागमे ॥१२॥
12. kṣveḍitāsphoṭitotkruṣṭaistumulaṁ sarvato'bhavat ,
bāhughoṣāśca vīrāṇāṁ karṇārjunasamāgame.

abhavat bāhughoṣāḥ ca vīrāṇām karṇārjunasamāgame

12. From all sides, there arose a great tumult from shouts, the slapping of arms, and loud cries. There were also the roars of the heroes' arms during the encounter between Karṇa and Arjuna.
तौ दृष्ट्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रौ रथस्थौ रथिनां वरौ ।
प्रगृहीतमहाचापौ शरशक्तिगदायुधौ ॥१३॥
13. tau dṛṣṭvā puruṣavyāghrau rathasthau rathināṁ varau ,
pragṛhītamahācāpau śaraśaktigadāyudhau.

13. Having seen those two, who were like tigers among men (puruṣavyāghrau), the best among charioteers, standing on their chariots, holding their great bows, and armed with arrows, spears, and maces.
वर्मिणौ बद्धनिस्त्रिंशौ श्वेताश्वौ शङ्खशोभिनौ ।
तूणीरवरसंपन्नौ द्वावपि स्म सुदर्शनौ ॥१४॥
14. varmiṇau baddhanistriṁśau śvetāśvau śaṅkhaśobhinau ,
tūṇīravarasaṁpannau dvāvapi sma sudarśanau.

14. Both of them were indeed handsome (sudarśanau), armored, with swords fastened, mounted on white horses, adorned with conches, and equipped with excellent quivers.
रक्तचन्दनदिग्धाङ्गौ समदौ वृषभाविव ।
आशीविषसमप्रख्यौ यमकालान्तकोपमौ ॥१५॥
15. raktacandanadigdhāṅgau samadau vṛṣabhāviva ,
āśīviṣasamaprakhyau yamakālāntakopamau.

15. They were like two intoxicated bulls (vṛṣabhau) with limbs smeared with red sandalwood paste, comparable to venomous serpents, and resembling Yama, Time, and Antaka (the Destroyer).
इन्द्रवृत्राविव क्रुद्धौ सूर्याचन्द्रमसप्रभौ ।
महाग्रहाविव क्रूरौ युगान्ते समुपस्थितौ ॥१६॥

16. They were enraged like Indra and Vṛtra (indravṛtrāviva), shining with the splendor of the sun and moon, and fierce like two great planets (mahāgrahau) present at the end of a cosmic age (yugānte).
देवगर्भौ देवसमौ देवतुल्यौ च रूपतः ।
समेतौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ प्रेक्ष्य कर्णधनंजयौ ॥१७॥
17. devagarbhau devasamau devatulyau ca rūpataḥ ,
sametau puruṣavyāghrau prekṣya karṇadhanaṁjayau.

उभौ वरायुधधरावुभौ रणकृतश्रमौ ।
उभौ च बाहुशब्देन नादयन्तौ नभस्तलम् ॥१८॥
18. ubhau varāyudhadharāvubhau raṇakṛtaśramau ,
ubhau ca bāhuśabdena nādayantau nabhastalam.

18. Both were bearing excellent weapons, both had exerted themselves in battle, and both were making the sky resound with the sound of their arms.
उभौ विश्रुतकर्माणौ पौरुषेण बलेन च ।
उभौ च सदृशौ युद्धे शम्बरामरराजयोः ॥१९॥
19. ubhau viśrutakarmāṇau pauruṣeṇa balena ca ,
ubhau ca sadṛśau yuddhe śambarāmararājayoḥ.

19. Both were renowned for their deeds (karma), valor, and strength; and both were equal in battle to Shambara and the king of the gods.
कार्तवीर्यसमौ युद्धे तथा दाशरथेः समौ ।
विष्णुवीर्यसमौ वीर्ये तथा भवसमौ युधि ॥२०॥
20. kārtavīryasamau yuddhe tathā dāśaratheḥ samau ,
viṣṇuvīryasamau vīrye tathā bhavasamau yudhi.

20. They were equal to Kartavirya in battle, and similarly equal to Rama, the son of Dasharatha. They were equal to Vishnu in might (vīrya), and likewise equal to Bhava (Shiva) in combat.
उभौ श्वेतहयौ राजन्रथप्रवरवाहिनौ ।
सारथी प्रवरौ चैव तयोरास्तां महाबलौ ॥२१॥
21. ubhau śvetahayau rājanrathapravaravāhinau ,
sārathī pravarau caiva tayorāstāṁ mahābalau.

21. O King, both (Arjuna and Krishna) were present, (they who were) associated with white horses and were drivers of excellent chariots. And indeed, they themselves were excellent and exceedingly mighty charioteers.
तौ तु दृष्ट्वा महाराज राजमानौ महारथौ ।
सिद्धचारणसंघानां विस्मयः समपद्यत ॥२२॥
22. tau tu dṛṣṭvā mahārāja rājamānau mahārathau ,
siddhacāraṇasaṁghānāṁ vismayaḥ samapadyata.

| siddhacāraṇasaṃghānām vismayaḥ samapadyata
22. mahārāja tu (yadā) siddhacāraṇasaṃghānām (janāḥ) tau

22. But, O great king, when (the celestial beings) saw those two (Arjuna and Krishna), shining and great warriors (mahārathau), astonishment arose among the hosts of Siddhas and Caraṇas.
धार्तराष्ट्रास्ततः कर्णं सबला भरतर्षभ ।
परिवव्रुर्महात्मानं क्षिप्रमाहवशोभिनम् ॥२३॥
23. dhārtarāṣṭrāstataḥ karṇaṁ sabalā bharatarṣabha ,
parivavrurmahātmānaṁ kṣipramāhavaśobhinam.
23. dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ tataḥ karṇam sabalāḥ bharatarṣabha
| parivavruḥ mahātmānam kṣipram āhavaśobhinam
23. bharatarṣabha tataḥ sabalāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kṣipram

23. O best of Bhāratas, then the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, along with their forces, swiftly surrounded the great-souled (ātman) Karṇa, who was resplendent (śobhinam) in battle.
तथैव पाण्डवा हृष्टा धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः ।
परिवव्रुर्महात्मानं पार्थमप्रतिमं युधि ॥२४॥
24. tathaiva pāṇḍavā hṛṣṭā dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ ,
parivavrurmahātmānaṁ pārthamapratimaṁ yudhi.
24. tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnapurōgamāḥ
| parivavruḥ mahātmānam pārtham apratimam yudhi
24. tathā eva hṛṣṭāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnapurōgamāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ
yudhi apratimam mahātmānam pārtham parivavruḥ
24. Similarly, the joyful Pāṇḍavas, with Dhṛṣṭadyumna as their leader, surrounded the great-souled (ātman) Pārtha (Arjuna), who was unequalled in battle.
तावकानां रणे कर्णो ग्लह आसीद्विशां पते ।
तथैव पाण्डवेयानां ग्लहः पार्थोऽभवद्युधि ॥२५॥
25. tāvakānāṁ raṇe karṇo glaha āsīdviśāṁ pate ,
tathaiva pāṇḍaveyānāṁ glahaḥ pārtho'bhavadyudhi.
25. tāvakānām raṇe karṇaḥ glahaḥ āsīt viśām pate |
tathaiva pāṇḍaveyānām glahaḥ pārthaḥ abhavat yudhi

25. O lord of men, Karna was the main stake in battle for your (Kaurava) side. Similarly, Arjuna became the stake for the Pandavas in the fight.
त एव सभ्यास्तत्रासन्प्रेक्षकाश्चाभवन्स्म ते ।
तत्रैषां ग्लहमानानां ध्रुवौ जयपराजयौ ॥२६॥
26. ta eva sabhyāstatrāsanprekṣakāścābhavansma te ,
tatraiṣāṁ glahamānānāṁ dhruvau jayaparājayau.
26. te eva sabhyāḥ tatra āsan prekṣakāḥ ca abhavan sma
te | tatra eṣām glahamānānām dhruvau jayaparājayau
26. te eva sabhyāḥ tatra āsan,

26. Those very (kings and warriors) were the assembly members there, and they also served as spectators. For these who were engaged in this high-stakes game, victory and defeat were certain.
ताभ्यां द्यूतं समायत्तं विजयायेतराय वा ।
अस्माकं पाण्डवानां च स्थितानां रणमूर्धनि ॥२७॥
27. tābhyāṁ dyūtaṁ samāyattaṁ vijayāyetarāya vā ,
asmākaṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca sthitānāṁ raṇamūrdhani.
27. tābhyām dyūtam samāyattam vijayāya itarāya vā
| asmākam pāṇḍavānām ca sthitānām raṇamūrdhani
27. raṇamūrdhani sthitānām asmākam pāṇḍavānām ca
vijayāya itarāya vā dyūtam tābhyām samāyattam
27. By those two (Karna and Arjuna), the entire gamble (of war) depended, whether for victory or for defeat, for us (Kauravas) and for the Pandavas, who stand at the forefront of battle.
तौ तु स्थितौ महाराज समरे युद्धशालिनौ ।
अन्योन्यं प्रतिसंरब्धावन्योन्यस्य जयैषिणौ ॥२८॥
28. tau tu sthitau mahārāja samare yuddhaśālinau ,
anyonyaṁ pratisaṁrabdhāvanyonyasya jayaiṣiṇau.
28. tau tu sthitau mahārāja samare yuddhaśālinau |
anyonyam pratisaṃrabdhau anyonyasya jayeṣiṇau
28. mahārāja,
tau tu samare yuddhaśālinau sthitau,

28. But, O great king, those two (Karna and Arjuna) stood in battle, glorious in warfare, fiercely enraged at each other, and both desiring victory over the other.
तावुभौ प्रजिहीर्षेतामिन्द्रवृत्राविवाभितः ।
भीमरूपधरावास्तां महाधूमाविव ग्रहौ ॥२९॥
29. tāvubhau prajihīrṣetāmindravṛtrāvivābhitaḥ ,
bhīmarūpadharāvāstāṁ mahādhūmāviva grahau.

bhīmarūpadharau āstām mahādhūmau iva grahau

29. Those two desired to conquer each other from all sides, just like Indra and Vṛtra. They stood, having assumed terrifying forms, resembling two great smoky planets (graha).
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे साक्षेपा विवादा भरतर्षभ ।
मिथो भेदाश्च भूतानामासन्कर्णार्जुनान्तरे ।
व्याश्रयन्त दिशो भिन्नाः सर्वलोकाश्च मारिष ॥३०॥
30. tato'ntarikṣe sākṣepā vivādā bharatarṣabha ,
mitho bhedāśca bhūtānāmāsankarṇārjunāntare ,

30. tataḥ antarikṣe sākṣepāḥ vivādāḥ
bharatarṣabha mithaḥ bhedāḥ ca bhūtānām
āsan karṇārjunāntare vyāśrayanta
diśaḥ bhinnāḥ sarvalokāḥ ca māriṣa
30. bharatarṣabha māriṣa tataḥ antarikṣe karṇārjunāntare sākṣepāḥ vivādāḥ ca mithaḥ bhūtānām bhedāḥ āsan.
bhinnāḥ diśaḥ ca sarvalokāḥ vyāśrayanta.
30. Then, O best of Bharatas, O respected one, in the sky, disputes filled with accusations and mutual divisions among all beings arose between Karṇa and Arjuna. The different directions and all the worlds took opposing sides.
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः ।
प्रतिपक्षग्रहं चक्रुः कर्णार्जुनसमागमे ॥३१॥

31. The Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, Piśācas, Uragas, and Rākṣasas all took opposing sides at the encounter between Karṇa and Arjuna.
द्यौरासीत्कर्णतो व्यग्रा सनक्षत्रा विशां पते ।
भूमिर्विशाला पार्थस्य माता पुत्रस्य भारत ॥३२॥
32. dyaurāsītkarṇato vyagrā sanakṣatrā viśāṁ pate ,
bhūmirviśālā pārthasya mātā putrasya bhārata.

32. O lord of men, the sky, with its stars, was agitated on Karṇa's side. O Bhārata, the vast earth was as a mother to Pārtha (Arjuna), her son.
सरितः सागराश्चैव गिरयश्च नरोत्तम ।
वृक्षाश्चौषधयस्तत्र व्याश्रयन्त किरीटिनम् ॥३३॥
33. saritaḥ sāgarāścaiva girayaśca narottama ,
vṛkṣāścauṣadhayastatra vyāśrayanta kirīṭinam.

33. O best of men, rivers, oceans, mountains, trees, and medicinal plants all took refuge in the crowned one (Arjuna).
असुरा यातुधानाश्च गुह्यकाश्च परंतप ।
कर्णतः समपद्यन्त खेचराणि वयांसि च ॥३४॥

34. O tormentor of foes, Asuras, Rākṣasas, Guhyakas, and birds (flying creatures) emerged from the ear.
रत्नानि निधयः सर्वे वेदाश्चाख्यानपञ्चमाः ।
सोपवेदोपनिषदः सरहस्याः ससंग्रहाः ॥३५॥
35. ratnāni nidhayaḥ sarve vedāścākhyānapañcamāḥ ,
sopavedopaniṣadaḥ sarahasyāḥ sasaṁgrahāḥ.

35. All jewels and treasures, along with the Vedas — which have narratives (ākhyāna) as their fifth component, and are accompanied by the Upavedas, Upaniṣads, secret teachings, and various collections.
वासुकिश्चित्रसेनश्च तक्षकश्चोपतक्षकः ।
पर्वताश्च तथा सर्वे काद्रवेयाश्च सान्वयाः ।
विषवन्तो महारोषा नागाश्चार्जुनतोऽभवन् ॥३६॥
36. vāsukiścitrasenaśca takṣakaścopatakṣakaḥ ,
parvatāśca tathā sarve kādraveyāśca sānvayāḥ ,
viṣavanto mahāroṣā nāgāścārjunato'bhavan.

36. Vāsuki, Citrasena, Takṣaka, and Upatakṣaka, as well as all the mountains, and all the Kādraveya Nagas (serpents) along with their families – venomous and extremely wrathful – all came into being from Arjuna.
ऐरावताः सौरभेया वैशालेयाश्च भोगिनः ।
एतेऽभवन्नर्जुनतः क्षुद्रसर्पास्तु कर्णतः ॥३७॥
37. airāvatāḥ saurabheyā vaiśāleyāśca bhoginaḥ ,
ete'bhavannarjunataḥ kṣudrasarpāstu karṇataḥ.

37. The descendants of Airāvata, Saurabheya, and Vaiśāleya, as well as the Bhogins (great serpents), all originated from Arjuna. However, the minor serpents originated from Karna.
ईहामृगा व्याडमृगा मङ्गल्याश्च मृगद्विजाः ।
पार्थस्य विजयं राजन्सर्व एवाभिसंश्रिताः ॥३८॥
38. īhāmṛgā vyāḍamṛgā maṅgalyāśca mṛgadvijāḥ ,
pārthasya vijayaṁ rājansarva evābhisaṁśritāḥ.

38. O King, the desirable animals, fierce beasts, and auspicious animals and birds, all indeed allied themselves with Partha (Arjuna) for his victory.
वसवो मरुतः साध्या रुद्रा विश्वेऽश्विनौ तथा ।
अग्निरिन्द्रश्च सोमश्च पवनश्च दिशो दश ।
धनंजयमुपाजग्मुरादित्याः कर्णतोऽभवन् ॥३९॥
39. vasavo marutaḥ sādhyā rudrā viśve'śvinau tathā ,
agnirindraśca somaśca pavanaśca diśo daśa ,
dhanaṁjayamupājagmurādityāḥ karṇato'bhavan.

39. The Vasus, Maruts, Sadhyas, Rudras, Viśve Devas, and the two Ashvins, along with Agni, Indra, Soma, Pavana, and the deities of the ten directions, all approached Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). The Adityas, however, originated from Karna.
देवास्तु पितृभिः सार्धं सगणार्जुनतोऽभवन् ।
यमो वैश्रवणश्चैव वरुणश्च यतोऽर्जुनः ॥४०॥
40. devāstu pitṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ sagaṇārjunato'bhavan ,
yamo vaiśravaṇaścaiva varuṇaśca yato'rjunaḥ.

40. But the gods, together with the ancestors and their retinues, originated from Arjuna. Yama, Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera), and Varuna also aligned with Arjuna.
देवब्रह्मनृपर्षीणां गणाः पाण्डवतोऽभवन् ।
तुम्बुरुप्रमुखा राजन्गन्धर्वाश्च यतोऽर्जुनः ॥४१॥
41. devabrahmanṛparṣīṇāṁ gaṇāḥ pāṇḍavato'bhavan ,
tumburupramukhā rājangandharvāśca yato'rjunaḥ.

41. O King, groups of gods, brahmins, and royal sages (nṛparṣi) manifested from the Pandava (Arjuna). And where Arjuna is, there too are the Gandharvas, led by Tumburu.
प्रावेयाः सह मौनेयैर्गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः ।
ईहामृगव्याडमृगैर्द्विपाश्च रथपत्तिभिः ॥४२॥
42. prāveyāḥ saha mauneyairgandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
īhāmṛgavyāḍamṛgairdvipāśca rathapattibhiḥ.

42. Groups of Gandharvas and Apsarases, along with the Mauneyas, were visible. Also [visible were] elephants, accompanied by predatory animals and dangerous wild beasts, and by chariot warriors and foot soldiers.
उह्यमानास्तथा मेघैर्वायुना च मनीषिणः ।
दिदृक्षवः समाजग्मुः कर्णार्जुनसमागमम् ॥४३॥
43. uhyamānāstathā meghairvāyunā ca manīṣiṇaḥ ,
didṛkṣavaḥ samājagmuḥ karṇārjunasamāgamam.

43. And similarly, wise persons (manīṣiṇa) being carried by clouds and by the wind, desirous of witnessing, assembled for the encounter between Karna and Arjuna.
देवदानवगन्धर्वा नागा यक्षाः पतत्रिणः ।
महर्षयो वेदविदः पितरश्च स्वधाभुजः ॥४४॥
44. devadānavagandharvā nāgā yakṣāḥ patatriṇaḥ ,
maharṣayo vedavidaḥ pitaraśca svadhābhujaḥ.

44. Gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, Nagas, Yakshas, birds (patatrin), great sages (maharṣi) who are knowers of the Vedas (vedavid), and the ancestors (pitṛ) who partake of the svadhā offering [were also present].
तपो विद्यास्तथौषध्यो नानारूपाम्बरत्विषः ।
अन्तरिक्षे महाराज विनदन्तोऽवतस्थिरे ॥४५॥
45. tapo vidyāstathauṣadhyo nānārūpāmbaratviṣaḥ ,
antarikṣe mahārāja vinadanto'vatasthire.

45. O great king, ascetic practices (tapas), various branches of knowledge (vidyā), and medicinal herbs, shining with diverse appearances and celestial radiance, stood resounding in the sky.
ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मर्षिभिः सार्धं प्रजापतिभिरेव च ।
भवेनावस्थितो यानं दिव्यं तं देशमभ्ययात् ॥४६॥
46. brahmā brahmarṣibhiḥ sārdhaṁ prajāpatibhireva ca ,
bhavenāvasthito yānaṁ divyaṁ taṁ deśamabhyayāt.

46. Brahmā, accompanied by the Brahmana sages (brahmarṣi) and also the progenitors (prajāpati), and being present with Bhava (Śiva), proceeded to that divine region by means of a celestial vehicle.
दृष्ट्वा प्रजापतिं देवाः स्वयंभुवमुपागमन् ।
समोऽस्तु देव विजय एतयोर्नरसिंहयोः ॥४७॥
47. dṛṣṭvā prajāpatiṁ devāḥ svayaṁbhuvamupāgaman ,
samo'stu deva vijaya etayornarasiṁhayoḥ.

samaḥ astu deva vijayaḥ etayoḥ narasiṃhayoḥ

47. Having seen the progenitor (prajāpati), the gods approached the self-existent one (svayambhu, i.e., Brahmā). They said: 'O god, may there be an equal victory for these two lion-like men.'
तदुपश्रुत्य मघवा प्रणिपत्य पितामहम् ।
कर्णार्जुनविनाशेन मा नश्यत्वखिलं जगत् ॥४८॥
48. tadupaśrutya maghavā praṇipatya pitāmaham ,
karṇārjunavināśena mā naśyatvakhilaṁ jagat.

48. Having heard that, Maghavā (Indra), prostrating before the Grandfather (pitāmaha, i.e., Brahmā), pleaded: 'May the entire world not perish due to the destruction of Karna and Arjuna.'
स्वयंभो ब्रूहि तद्वाक्यं समोऽस्तु विजयोऽनयोः ।
तत्तथास्तु नमस्तेऽस्तु प्रसीद भगवन्मम ॥४९॥
49. svayaṁbho brūhi tadvākyaṁ samo'stu vijayo'nayoḥ ,
tattathāstu namaste'stu prasīda bhagavanmama.

| tat tathā astu namaḥ te astu prasīda bhagavan mama

49. O Self-born one (svayaṃbhu), declare that these two should have an equal victory. Let it be so; salutations to you. O Lord (bhagavan), be gracious to me.
ब्रह्मेशानावथो वाक्यमूचतुस्त्रिदशेश्वरम् ।
विजयो ध्रुव एवास्तु विजयस्य महात्मनः ॥५०॥
50. brahmeśānāvatho vākyamūcatustridaśeśvaram ,
vijayo dhruva evāstu vijayasya mahātmanaḥ.

50. Brahmā and Īśāna (Śiva) then spoke this statement to the lord of the gods (Indra): 'Let there indeed be certain victory for the great-souled Vijaya.'
मनस्वी बलवाञ्शूरः कृतास्त्रश्च तपोधनः ।
बिभर्ति च महातेजा धनुर्वेदमशेषतः ॥५१॥
51. manasvī balavāñśūraḥ kṛtāstraśca tapodhanaḥ ,
bibharti ca mahātejā dhanurvedamaśeṣataḥ.

51. He (Vijaya) is high-minded, strong, brave, skilled in weaponry, and rich in asceticism (tapas). And, being greatly radiant, he thoroughly comprehends the entire science of archery.
अतिक्रमेच्च माहात्म्याद्दिष्टमेतस्य पर्ययात् ।
अतिक्रान्ते च लोकानामभावो नियतो भवेत् ॥५२॥
52. atikramecca māhātmyāddiṣṭametasya paryayāt ,
atikrānte ca lokānāmabhāvo niyato bhavet.
52. atikramet ca māhātmyāt diṣṭam etasya paryayāt
| atikrānte ca lokānām abhāvaḥ niyataḥ bhavet
52. ca māhātmyāt etasya diṣṭam atikramet ca paryayāt

52. And he, by his greatness, might even overcome destiny (diṣṭa); but should there be a reversal of this (destiny), then if it (destiny/order) is transgressed, the certain destruction of the worlds would occur.
न विद्यते व्यवस्थानं कृष्णयोः क्रुद्धयोः क्वचित् ।
स्रष्टारौ ह्यसतश्चोभौ सतश्च पुरुषर्षभौ ॥५३॥
53. na vidyate vyavasthānaṁ kṛṣṇayoḥ kruddhayoḥ kvacit ,
sraṣṭārau hyasataścobhau sataśca puruṣarṣabhau.

sraṣṭārau hi asataḥ ca ubhau sataḥ ca puruṣarṣabhau

hi ubhau puruṣarṣabhau asataḥ ca sataḥ ca sraṣṭārau
53. When the two Krishnas (Arjuna and Vāsudeva), both best among men (puruṣa-ṛṣabha), become enraged, no stable situation or resolution can be found anywhere. For indeed, both of them are the creators of both the existent and the non-existent.
नरनारायणावेतौ पुराणावृषिसत्तमौ ।
अनियत्तौ नियन्तारावभीतौ स्म परंतपौ ॥५४॥
54. naranārāyaṇāvetau purāṇāvṛṣisattamau ,
aniyattau niyantārāvabhītau sma paraṁtapau.

54. These two, Nara and Narayana, are the ancient and foremost among sages. They are unrestrained yet ultimate controllers, fearless, and tormentors of enemies.
कर्णो लोकानयं मुख्यान्प्राप्नोतु पुरुषर्षभः ।
वीरो वैकर्तनः शूरो विजयस्त्वस्तु कृष्णयोः ॥५५॥
55. karṇo lokānayaṁ mukhyānprāpnotu puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
vīro vaikartanaḥ śūro vijayastvastu kṛṣṇayoḥ.
55. karṇaḥ lokān ayam mukhyān prāpnotu puruṣarṣabhaḥ
vīraḥ vaikartanaḥ śūraḥ vijayaḥ tu astu kṛṣṇayoḥ
55. ayam puruṣarṣabhaḥ karṇaḥ mukhyān lokān prāpnotu
tu kṛṣṇayoḥ vijayaḥ astu vīraḥ vaikartanaḥ śūraḥ
55. May this Karna, the best among men (puruṣa-ṛṣabha), attain the principal worlds. But may victory belong to the two Krishnas (Arjuna and Vāsudeva) against the heroic, brave son of Vīkartana.
वसूनां च सलोकत्वं मरुतां वा समाप्नुयात् ।
सहितो द्रोणभीष्माभ्यां नाकलोके महीयताम् ॥५६॥
56. vasūnāṁ ca salokatvaṁ marutāṁ vā samāpnuyāt ,
sahito droṇabhīṣmābhyāṁ nākaloke mahīyatām.

sahitaḥ droṇabhīṣmābhyām nākaloke mahīyatām

56. And may he attain the same realm as the Vasus or the Maruts. May he be glorified in the celestial world (nākaloka), accompanied by Drona and Bhishma.
इत्युक्तो देवदेवाभ्यां सहस्राक्षोऽब्रवीद्वचः ।
आमन्त्र्य सर्वभूतानि ब्रह्मेशानानुशासनात् ॥५७॥
57. ityukto devadevābhyāṁ sahasrākṣo'bravīdvacaḥ ,
āmantrya sarvabhūtāni brahmeśānānuśāsanāt.

brahma-īśāna-anuśāsanāt sarvabhūtāni āmantrya vacaḥ abravīt
57. Having thus been spoken to by the two lords of gods (Brahmā and Īśāna), the thousand-eyed Indra spoke these words, addressing all beings in accordance with the command of Brahmā and Īśāna.
श्रुतं भवद्भिर्यत्प्रोक्तं भगवद्भ्यां जगद्धितम् ।
तत्तथा नान्यथा तद्धि तिष्ठध्वं गतमन्यवः ॥५८॥
58. śrutaṁ bhavadbhiryatproktaṁ bhagavadbhyāṁ jagaddhitam ,
tattathā nānyathā taddhi tiṣṭhadhvaṁ gatamanyavaḥ.
58. śrutam bhavadbhiḥ yat proktam bhagavadbhyām jagat-hitam
tat tathā na anyathā tat hi tiṣṭhadhvam gata-manyavaḥ
58. bhavadbhiḥ yat bhagavadbhyām jagat-hitam proktam tat śrutam.
tat tathā na anyathā,
hi tat.
gata-manyavaḥ tiṣṭhadhvam.
58. That which has been spoken by the two revered lords for the welfare of the world has been heard by you all. Indeed, it is so and cannot be otherwise. Therefore, remain, having set aside your anger.
इति श्रुत्वेन्द्रवचनं सर्वभूतानि मारिष ।
विस्मितान्यभवन्राजन्पूजयां चक्रिरे च तत् ॥५९॥
59. iti śrutvendravacanaṁ sarvabhūtāni māriṣa ,
vismitānyabhavanrājanpūjayāṁ cakrire ca tat.
59. iti śrutvā indra-vacanam sarvabhūtāni māriṣa
vismitāni abhavan rājan pūjayām cakrire ca tat
59. māriṣa! rājan! iti indra-vacanam śrutvā sarvabhūtāni vismitāni abhavan ca tat pūjayām cakrire.
59. O venerable Māriṣa, O King, upon hearing these words of Indra, all beings became astonished and offered him homage.
व्यसृजंश्च सुगन्धीनि नानारूपाणि खात्तथा ।
पुष्पवर्षाणि विबुधा देवतूर्याण्यवादयन् ॥६०॥
60. vyasṛjaṁśca sugandhīni nānārūpāṇi khāttathā ,
puṣpavarṣāṇi vibudhā devatūryāṇyavādayan.
60. vyasṛjan ca sugandhīni nānā-rūpāṇi khāt tathā
puṣpa-varṣāṇi vibudhā deva-tūryāṇi avādayan
60. ca khāt sugandhīni nānā-rūpāṇi vyasṛjan.

60. And from the sky, they showered fragrant objects of various forms. The gods also rained down flowers and played divine musical instruments.
दिदृक्षवश्चाप्रतिमं द्वैरथं नरसिंहयोः ।
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः सर्व एवावतस्थिरे ।
रथौ च तौ श्वेतहयौ युक्तकेतू महास्वनौ ॥६१॥
61. didṛkṣavaścāpratimaṁ dvairathaṁ narasiṁhayoḥ ,
devadānavagandharvāḥ sarva evāvatasthire ,
rathau ca tau śvetahayau yuktaketū mahāsvanau.

61. All the gods, demons, and Gandharvas gathered, eager to witness the unparalleled chariot duel between the two lion-like men (Arjuna and Karṇa). And those two chariots, with their white horses, matching banners, and mighty roars, were also positioned.
समागता लोकवीराः शङ्खान्दध्मुः पृथक्पृथक् ।
वासुदेवार्जुनौ वीरौ कर्णशल्यौ च भारत ॥६२॥
62. samāgatā lokavīrāḥ śaṅkhāndadhmuḥ pṛthakpṛthak ,
vāsudevārjunau vīrau karṇaśalyau ca bhārata.

62. O descendant of Bharata, the gathered heroes of the world, including the valiant Vāsudeva (Krishna) and Arjuna, as well as Karṇa and Śalya, each blew their conch shells separately.
तद्भीरुसंत्रासकरं युद्धं समभवत्तदा ।
अन्योन्यस्पर्धिनोर्वीर्ये शक्रशम्बरयोरिव ॥६३॥
63. tadbhīrusaṁtrāsakaraṁ yuddhaṁ samabhavattadā ,
anyonyaspardhinorvīrye śakraśambarayoriva.
63. tat bhīrusaṃtrāsakaram yuddham samabhavat tadā
anyonyaśpardhinoḥ vīrye śakraśambarayoḥ iva
63. tadā tat bhīrusaṃtrāsakaram yuddham samabhavat

63. Then that battle, terrifying to the faint-hearted, began. It was like the conflict between Śakra (Indra) and Śambara, who were rivals in prowess.
तयोर्ध्वजौ वीतमालौ शुशुभाते रथस्थितौ ।
पृथग्रूपौ समार्छन्तौ क्रोधं युद्धे परस्परम् ॥६४॥
64. tayordhvajau vītamālau śuśubhāte rathasthitau ,
pṛthagrūpau samārchantau krodhaṁ yuddhe parasparam.

64. The two distinct banners of those warriors, standing on their chariots and stripped of their garlands, shone brightly, manifesting their mutual anger in battle.
कर्णस्याशीविषनिभा रत्नसारवती दृढा ।
पुरंदरधनुःप्रख्या हस्तिकक्ष्या व्यराजत ॥६५॥
65. karṇasyāśīviṣanibhā ratnasāravatī dṛḍhā ,
puraṁdaradhanuḥprakhyā hastikakṣyā vyarājata.

65. Karna's elephant girth (kakṣyā), which was strong, adorned with excellent jewels, and resembled a venomous snake, shone brightly, like Indra's bow.
कपिश्रेष्ठस्तु पार्थस्य व्यादितास्यो भयंकरः ।
भीषयन्नेव दंष्ट्राभिर्दुर्निरीक्ष्यो रविर्यथा ॥६६॥
66. kapiśreṣṭhastu pārthasya vyāditāsyo bhayaṁkaraḥ ,
bhīṣayanneva daṁṣṭrābhirdurnirīkṣyo raviryathā.

66. Arjuna's chief of monkeys, terrifying with his wide-open mouth, and indeed terrifying with his fangs, was difficult to behold, just like the sun.
युद्धाभिलाषुको भूत्वा ध्वजो गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
कर्णध्वजमुपातिष्ठत्सोऽवदीदभिनर्दयन् ॥६७॥
67. yuddhābhilāṣuko bhūtvā dhvajo gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
karṇadhvajamupātiṣṭhatso'vadīdabhinardayan.

67. Having become eager for battle, the banner of Arjuna (the wielder of the Gaṇḍīva bow) approached Karna's banner. Roaring, he (the monkey) cried out.
उत्पत्य च महावेगः कक्ष्यामभ्यहनत्कपिः ।
नखैश्च दशनैश्चैव गरुडः पन्नगं यथा ॥६८॥
68. utpatya ca mahāvegaḥ kakṣyāmabhyahanatkapiḥ ,
nakhaiśca daśanaiścaiva garuḍaḥ pannagaṁ yathā.

68. And the very swift monkey, having leaped up, struck the girth (kakṣyā) with his claws and teeth, just as Garuda strikes a serpent.
सुकिङ्किणीकाभरणा कालपाशोपमायसी ।
अभ्यद्रवत्सुसंक्रुद्धा नागकक्ष्या महाकपिम् ॥६९॥
69. sukiṅkiṇīkābharaṇā kālapāśopamāyasī ,
abhyadravatsusaṁkruddhā nāgakakṣyā mahākapim.

69. Adorned with small bells, iron-like, and resembling the noose of Death, Nāgakakṣyā, extremely enraged, rushed towards the great monkey.
उभयोरुत्तमे युद्धे द्वैरथे द्यूत आहृते ।
प्रकुर्वाते ध्वजौ युद्धं प्रत्यहेषन्हयान्हयाः ॥७०॥
70. ubhayoruttame yuddhe dvairathe dyūta āhṛte ,
prakurvāte dhvajau yuddhaṁ pratyaheṣanhayānhayāḥ.

kurvāte dhvajau yuddham prati aheṣan hayān hayāḥ

70. As an excellent chariot duel, resembling a game of dice, commenced between the two (warriors), their two banners engaged in battle, and the horses neighed back and forth against each other's horses.
अविध्यत्पुण्डरीकाक्षः शल्यं नयनसायकैः ।
स चापि पुण्डरीकाक्षं तथैवाभिसमैक्षत ॥७१॥
71. avidhyatpuṇḍarīkākṣaḥ śalyaṁ nayanasāyakaiḥ ,
sa cāpi puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ tathaivābhisamaikṣata.
71. avidhyat puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ śalyam nayanasāyakaiḥ saḥ
ca api puṇḍarīkākṣam tathā eva abhi sam aikṣata
71. puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ nayanasāyakaiḥ śalyam avidhyat ca
api saḥ tathā eva puṇḍarīkākṣam abhi sam aikṣata
71. The lotus-eyed one (Kṛṣṇa) struck Śalya with his eye-arrows (glances), and Śalya, in turn, looked back at the lotus-eyed one in the same manner.
तत्राजयद्वासुदेवः शल्यं नयनसायकैः ।
कर्णं चाप्यजयद्दृष्ट्या कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥७२॥
72. tatrājayadvāsudevaḥ śalyaṁ nayanasāyakaiḥ ,
karṇaṁ cāpyajayaddṛṣṭyā kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ.
72. tatra ajayat vāsudevaḥ śalyam nayanasāyakaiḥ karṇam
ca api ajayat dṛṣṭyā kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ

72. There, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) defeated Śalya with his eye-arrows (glances), and the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), also defeated Karṇa with a glance.
अथाब्रवीत्सूतपुत्रः शल्यमाभाष्य सस्मितम् ।
यदि पार्थो रणे हन्यादद्य मामिह कर्हिचित् ।
किमुत्तरं तदा ते स्यात्सखे सत्यं ब्रवीहि मे ॥७३॥
73. athābravītsūtaputraḥ śalyamābhāṣya sasmitam ,
yadi pārtho raṇe hanyādadya māmiha karhicit ,
kimuttaraṁ tadā te syātsakhe satyaṁ bravīhi me.
73. atha abrāvīt sūtaputraḥ śalyam ābhāṣya
sasmitam yadi pārthaḥ raṇe hanyāt
adya mām iha karhicit kim uttaram
tadā te syāt sakhe satyam bravīhi me

73. Then, Karṇa, the son of Sūta, addressed Śalya with a smile and said, "If Pārtha were to kill me here in battle today, what would be your reply then, O friend? Tell me the truth."
शल्य उवाच ।
यदि कर्ण रणे हन्यादद्य त्वां श्वेतवाहनः ।
उभावेकरथेनाहं हन्यां माधवपाण्डवौ ॥७४॥
74. śalya uvāca ,
yadi karṇa raṇe hanyādadya tvāṁ śvetavāhanaḥ ,
ubhāvekarathenāhaṁ hanyāṁ mādhavapāṇḍavau.
74. śalyaḥ uvāca yadi karṇa raṇe hanyāt adya tvām śvetavāhanaḥ
ubhāu ekarathena aham hanyām mādhava-pāṇḍavau
74. śalyaḥ uvāca yadi śvetavāhanaḥ adya raṇe tvām hanyāt karṇa (tvam),
(tadā) aham ekarathena ubhāu mādhava-pāṇḍavau hanyām
74. Śalya replied, "O Karṇa, if Arjuna, the one with white steeds, were to kill you in battle today, then I would slay both Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa) and the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) with a single chariot."
संजय उवाच ।
एवमेव तु गोविंदमर्जुनः प्रत्यभाषत ।
तं प्रहस्याब्रवीत्कृष्णः पार्थं परमिदं वचः ॥७५॥
75. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evameva tu goviṁdamarjunaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
taṁ prahasyābravītkṛṣṇaḥ pārthaṁ paramidaṁ vacaḥ.
75. sañjayaḥ uvāca evam eva tu govindam arjunaḥ pratyabhāṣata
tam prahasya abrāvīt kṛṣṇaḥ pārtham param idam vacaḥ
75. sañjayaḥ uvāca arjunaḥ govindam evam eva tu pratyabhāṣata
kṛṣṇaḥ tam prahasya pārtham idam param vacaḥ abrāvīt
75. Sañjaya said, "Arjuna, indeed, replied to Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) in exactly the same manner. Then, Kṛṣṇa, smiling, spoke these most excellent words to Pārtha (Arjuna)."
पतेद्दिवाकरः स्थानाच्छीर्येतानेकधा क्षितिः ।
शैत्यमग्निरियान्न त्वा कर्णो हन्याद्धनंजयम् ॥७६॥
76. pateddivākaraḥ sthānācchīryetānekadhā kṣitiḥ ,
śaityamagniriyānna tvā karṇo hanyāddhanaṁjayam.
76. patet divākaraḥ sthānāt śīryeta anekadhā kṣitiḥ
śaityam agniḥ iyāt na tvā karṇaḥ hanyāt dhanañjayam
76. divākaraḥ sthānāt patet kṣitiḥ anekadhā śīryeta agniḥ śaityam iyāt (api),
(kintu) karṇaḥ dhanañjayam na tvā hanyāt
76. "The sun might fall from its orbit, the earth might shatter into countless fragments, and fire might become cold; but Karṇa will certainly not kill Dhananjaya (Arjuna)."
यदि त्वेवं कथंचित्स्याल्लोकपर्यसनं यथा ।
हन्यां कर्णं तथा शल्यं बाहुभ्यामेव संयुगे ॥७७॥
77. yadi tvevaṁ kathaṁcitsyāllokaparyasanaṁ yathā ,
hanyāṁ karṇaṁ tathā śalyaṁ bāhubhyāmeva saṁyuge.
77. yadi tu evam kathaṃcit syāt loka-paryasanam yathā
hanyām karṇam tathā śalyam bāhubhyām eva saṃyuge
77. yadi kathaṃcit evam loka-paryasanam yathā syāt,
(aham) tu karṇam tathā śalyam bāhubhyām eva saṃyuge hanyām
77. If, by some means, the destruction of the world were to happen in such a way, then I would slay Karṇa and Śalya in battle with just my two arms.
इति कृष्णवचः श्रुत्वा प्रहसन्कपिकेतनः ।
अर्जुनः प्रत्युवाचेदं कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ।
ममाप्येतावपर्याप्तौ कर्णशल्यौ जनार्दन ॥७८॥
78. iti kṛṣṇavacaḥ śrutvā prahasankapiketanaḥ ,
arjunaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ kṛṣṇamakliṣṭakāriṇam ,
mamāpyetāvaparyāptau karṇaśalyau janārdana.
78. iti kṛṣṇa-vacaḥ śrutvā prahasan
kapi-ketanaḥ arjunaḥ prati uvāca idam
kṛṣṇam akliṣṭa-kāriṇam mama api etau
aparyāptau karṇa-śalyau janārdana
78. iti kṛṣṇa-vacaḥ śrutvā,
kapi-ketanaḥ arjunaḥ prahasan akliṣṭa-kāriṇam kṛṣṇam idam prati uvāca: "O janārdana,
mama etau karṇa-śalyau api aparyāptau.
"
78. Thus, hearing these words of Krishna, Arjuna, whose banner bears the monkey (Hanumān), laughing, replied this to Krishna, the performer of effortless deeds: "O Janārdana, for me, these two, Karṇa and Śalya, are also not enough (to satisfy my prowess)!"
सपताकाध्वजं कर्णं सशल्यरथवाजिनम् ।
सच्छत्रकवचं चैव सशक्तिशरकार्मुकम् ॥७९॥
79. sapatākādhvajaṁ karṇaṁ saśalyarathavājinam ,
sacchatrakavacaṁ caiva saśaktiśarakārmukam.
79. sa-patākā-dhvajam karṇam sa-śalya-ratha-vājinaṃ
sa-cchatra-kavacaṃ ca eva sa-śakti-śara-kārmukam
79. karṇam sa-patākā-dhvajam sa-śalya-ratha-vājinaṃ
sa-cchatra-kavacaṃ ca eva sa-śakti-śara-kārmukam
79. (You will see) Karṇa, along with his banner and flag, along with Śalya (his charioteer), his chariot, and horses, and also with his umbrella and armor, and with his spear, arrows, and bow.
द्रष्टास्यद्य शरैः कर्णं रणे कृत्तमनेकधा ।
अद्यैनं सरथं साश्वं सशक्तिकवचायुधम् ।
न हि मे शाम्यते वैरं कृष्णां यत्प्राहसत्पुरा ॥८०॥
80. draṣṭāsyadya śaraiḥ karṇaṁ raṇe kṛttamanekadhā ,
adyainaṁ sarathaṁ sāśvaṁ saśaktikavacāyudham ,
na hi me śāmyate vairaṁ kṛṣṇāṁ yatprāhasatpurā.
80. draṣṭā asi adya śaraiḥ karṇam raṇe kṛttam
anekadhā adya enam sa-ratham sa-aśvam
sa-śakti-kavaca-āyudham na hi me
śāmyate vairam kṛṣṇām yat prahasat purā
80. adya (tvam) karṇam,
enam sa-ratham sa-aśvam sa-śakti-kavaca-āyudham,
śaraiḥ anekadhā raṇe kṛttam draṣṭā asi.
hi me vairam na śāmyate,
yat purā kṛṣṇām prahasat.
80. Today, you will see Karṇa – along with his chariot, horses, spear, armor, and weapons – cut into many pieces by my arrows in battle. Indeed, my animosity (vaira) will not subside, because he laughed at Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) long ago.
अद्य द्रष्टासि गोविन्द कर्णमुन्मथितं मया ।
वारणेनेव मत्तेन पुष्पितं जगतीरुहम् ॥८१॥
81. adya draṣṭāsi govinda karṇamunmathitaṁ mayā ,
vāraṇeneva mattena puṣpitaṁ jagatīruham.
81. adya draṣṭā asi govinda karṇam unmathitam mayā
vāraṇena iva mattena puṣpitam jagatīruham
81. govinda adya mayā karṇam unmathitam draṣṭā
asi mattena vāraṇena iva puṣpitam jagatīruham
81. Today, O Govinda, you will see Karna annihilated by me, just as a flowering tree is uprooted by a maddened elephant.
अद्य ता मधुरा वाचः श्रोतासि मधुसूदन ।
अद्याभिमन्युजननीमनृणः सान्त्वयिष्यसि ।
कुन्तीं पितृष्वसारं च संप्रहृष्टो जनार्दन ॥८२॥
82. adya tā madhurā vācaḥ śrotāsi madhusūdana ,
adyābhimanyujananīmanṛṇaḥ sāntvayiṣyasi ,
kuntīṁ pitṛṣvasāraṁ ca saṁprahṛṣṭo janārdana.
82. adya tāḥ madhurāḥ vācaḥ śrotā asi
madhusūdana adya abhimanyujananaīm
anṛṇaḥ sāntvayisyasi kuntīm
pitṛṣvasāram ca samprahṛṣṭaḥ janārdana
82. madhusūdana adya tāḥ madhurāḥ vācaḥ
śrotā asi janārdana adya anṛṇaḥ
abhimanyujananaīm ca kuntīm
pitṛṣvasāram samprahṛṣṭaḥ sāntvayisyasi
82. Today, O Madhusudana, you will hear those sweet words. Today, having discharged your duty (anṛṇaḥ), you will console Abhimanyu's mother. And, O Janardana, greatly delighted, you will also console Kunti, your paternal aunt.
अद्य बाष्पमुखीं कृष्णां सान्त्वयिष्यसि माधव ।
वाग्भिश्चामृतकल्पाभिर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥८३॥
83. adya bāṣpamukhīṁ kṛṣṇāṁ sāntvayiṣyasi mādhava ,
vāgbhiścāmṛtakalpābhirdharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
83. adya bāṣpamukhīm kṛṣṇām sāntvayisyasi mādhava
vāgbhiḥ ca amṛtakalpābhiḥ dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
83. mādhava adya bāṣpamukhīm kṛṣṇām sāntvayisyasi ca
amṛtakalpābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
83. Today, O Madhava, you will console the tear-faced Draupadi, and with words like nectar, you will console Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.
