एवमेतद्ब्रह्मबलं गरीयो न ब्रह्मतः किंचिदन्यद्गरीयः ।
आविक्षितस्य तु बलं न मृष्ये वज्रमस्मै प्रहरिष्यामि घोरम् ॥१॥

1. Indra said: 'It is indeed true that the power of (brahman) is superior, and nothing else is superior to (brahman). However, I will not tolerate the strength of Āvīkṣita; I will strike him with my terrible thunderbolt.'
धृतराष्ट्र प्रहितो गच्छ मरुत्तं संवर्तेन सहितं तं वदस्व ।
बृहस्पतिं त्वमुपशिक्षस्व राजन्वज्रं वा ते प्रहरिष्यामि घोरम् ॥२॥
2. dhṛtarāṣṭra prahito gaccha maruttaṁ; saṁvartena sahitaṁ taṁ vadasva ,
bṛhaspatiṁ tvamupaśikṣasva rāja;nvajraṁ vā te prahariṣyāmi ghoram.

2. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having been sent, go to Marutta, who is accompanied by Saṃvarta, and convey this message to him. O king, either instruct yourself under Bṛhaspati, or I will strike you with a terrible thunderbolt.
व्यास उवाच ।
ततो गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रो नरेन्द्रं प्रोवाचेदं वचनं वासवस्य ।
गन्धर्वं मां धृतराष्ट्रं निबोध त्वामागतं वक्तुकामं नरेन्द्र ॥३॥
3. vyāsa uvāca ,
tato gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭro narendraṁ; provācedaṁ vacanaṁ vāsavasya ,
gandharvaṁ māṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ nibodha; tvāmāgataṁ vaktukāmaṁ narendra.

narendram provāca idam vacanam

3. Vyāsa said: Then, having gone, Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke these words of Vāsava (Indra) to the king (Marutta): 'O king, know that I am the gandharva Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who has come to you, desiring to speak.'
ऐन्द्रं वाक्यं शृणु मे राजसिंह यत्प्राह लोकाधिपतिर्महात्मा ।
बृहस्पतिं याजकं त्वं वृणीष्व वज्रं वा ते प्रहरिष्यामि घोरम् ।
वचश्चेदेतन्न करिष्यसे मे प्राहैतदेतावदचिन्त्यकर्मा ॥४॥
4. aindraṁ vākyaṁ śṛṇu me rājasiṁha; yatprāha lokādhipatirmahātmā ,
bṛhaspatiṁ yājakaṁ tvaṁ vṛṇīṣva; vajraṁ vā te prahariṣyāmi ghoram ,
vacaścedetanna kariṣyase me; prāhaitadetāvadacintyakarmā.
4. aindram vākyam śṛṇu me rājasiṃha yat prāha
lokādhipatiḥ mahātmā bṛhaspatim yājakam tvam vṛṇīṣva
vajram vā te prahariṣyāmi ghoram vacaḥ cet etat
na kariṣyase me prāha etat etāvat acintyakarmā
4. rājasiṃha me aindram vākyam śṛṇu yat mahātmā
lokādhipatiḥ prāha tvam bṛhaspatim yājakam vṛṇīṣva
vā te ghoram vajram prahariṣyāmi cet me etat
vacaḥ na kariṣyase acintyakarmā etāvat etat prāha
4. O lion among kings, listen to these words of Indra that the great-souled lord of the worlds (Indra) has spoken through me. Either choose Bṛhaspati as your officiating priest, or I will strike you with a terrible thunderbolt. If you do not heed these words of mine, then this (consequence) is what he, whose actions are beyond comprehension, has declared.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
त्वं चैवैतद्वेत्थ पुरंदरश्च विश्वेदेवा वसवश्चाश्विनौ च ।
मित्रद्रोहे निष्कृतिर्वै यथैव नास्तीति लोकेषु सदैव वादः ॥५॥
5. marutta uvāca ,
tvaṁ caivaitadvettha puraṁdaraśca; viśvedevā vasavaścāśvinau ca ,
mitradrohe niṣkṛtirvai yathaiva; nāstīti lokeṣu sadaiva vādaḥ.

purandaraḥ ca viśvedevāḥ vasavaḥ ca
aśvinau ca mitradrohe niṣkṛtiḥ vai yathā
eva na asti iti lokeṣu sadā eva vādaḥ

5. Marutta said: 'You (the messenger Dhṛtarāṣṭra) and Purandara (Indra), along with the Viśvedevas, Vasus, and the two Aśvins, all know this truth: there is indeed no atonement for treachery against a friend. This is always the established principle among people.'
बृहस्पतिर्याजयिता महेन्द्रं देवश्रेष्ठं वज्रभृतां वरिष्ठम् ।
संवर्तो मां याजयिताद्य राजन्न ते वाक्यं तस्य वा रोचयामि ॥६॥
6. bṛhaspatiryājayitā mahendraṁ; devaśreṣṭhaṁ vajrabhṛtāṁ variṣṭham ,
saṁvarto māṁ yājayitādya rāja;nna te vākyaṁ tasya vā rocayāmi.
6. Bṛhaspatiḥ yājayitā Mahendram
deva-śreṣṭham vajra-bhṛtām variṣṭham
Saṃvartaḥ mām yājayitā adya
rājan na te vākyam tasya vā rocayāmi
6. राजन् Bṛhaspatiḥ vajra-bhṛtām
variṣṭham deva-śreṣṭham Mahendram
yājayitā adya Saṃvartaḥ mām yājayitā
te vākyam tasya vā na rocayāmi
6. Bṛhaspati performs the Vedic ritual for Mahendra, the chief of the gods, the foremost among those who wield the thunderbolt. Today, Saṃvarta will conduct the Vedic ritual for me, O King. I do not approve of your statement, nor his.
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
घोरो नादः श्रूयते वासवस्य नभस्तले गर्जतो राजसिंह ।
व्यक्तं वज्रं मोक्ष्यते ते महेन्द्रः क्षेमं राजंश्चिन्त्यतामेष कालः ॥७॥
7. gandharva uvāca ,
ghoro nādaḥ śrūyate vāsavasya; nabhastale garjato rājasiṁha ,
vyaktaṁ vajraṁ mokṣyate te mahendraḥ; kṣemaṁ rājaṁścintyatāmeṣa kālaḥ.
7. Gandharvaḥ uvāca ghoraḥ nādaḥ śrūyate
Vāsavasya nabhas-tale garjataḥ rāja-siṃha
vyaktam vajram mokṣyate te
Mahendraḥ kṣemam rājan cintyatām eṣaḥ kālaḥ
7. गन्धर्वः उवाच राज-सिंह वासवस्य गर्जतः
घोरः नादः नभस्-तले श्रूयते व्यक्तम्
महेन्द्रः ते वज्रम् मोक्ष्यते राजन्
एषः कालः [अतः] क्षेमम् चिन्त्यताम्
7. The Gandharva said: 'O lion among kings, a terrible roar of Vāsava (Indra) is heard thundering in the sky! Clearly, Mahendra will release his thunderbolt upon you. O King, this is the time, safety must be considered!'
व्यास उवाच ।
इत्येवमुक्तो धृतराष्ट्रेण राजा श्रुत्वा नादं नदतो वासवस्य ।
तपोनित्यं धर्मविदां वरिष्ठं संवर्तं तं ज्ञापयामास कार्यम् ॥८॥
8. vyāsa uvāca ,
ityevamukto dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājā; śrutvā nādaṁ nadato vāsavasya ,
taponityaṁ dharmavidāṁ variṣṭhaṁ; saṁvartaṁ taṁ jñāpayāmāsa kāryam.
8. Vyāsaḥ uvāca iti evam uktaḥ Dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa
rājā śrutvā nādam nadataḥ
Vāsavasya tapas-nityam dharma-vidām
variṣṭham Saṃvartam tam jñāpayām āsa kāryam
8. व्यासः उवाच इति एवम् धृतराष्ट्रेण
उक्तः राजा वासवस्य नदतः नादम् श्रुत्वा
तपस्-नित्यम् धर्म-विदाम् वरिष्ठम्
तम् संवर्तम् कार्यम् ज्ञापयामास
8. Vyāsa said: 'Thus addressed by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, having heard the roar of the thundering Vāsava (Indra), informed that Saṃvarta - who was constantly devoted to asceticism (tapas) and foremost among those who understand (natural) law (dharma) - of the task.'
मरुत्त उवाच ।
इममश्मानं प्लवमानमारादध्वा दूरं तेन न दृश्यतेऽद्य ।
प्रपद्येऽहं शर्म विप्रेन्द्र त्वत्तः प्रयच्छ तस्मादभयं विप्रमुख्य ॥९॥
9. marutta uvāca ,
imamaśmānaṁ plavamānamārā;dadhvā dūraṁ tena na dṛśyate'dya ,
prapadye'haṁ śarma viprendra tvattaḥ; prayaccha tasmādabhayaṁ vipramukhya.
9. Maruttaḥ uvāca imam aśmānam plavamānam
ārāt adhvā dūram tena na dṛśyate adya
prapadye aham śarma vipra-indra tvattaḥ
prayaccha tasmāt abhayam vipra-mukhya
9. मरुत्तः उवाच अद्य इमम् प्लवमानम्
अश्मानम् आरात् दूरम् अध्वा तेन न दृश्यते
विप्र-इन्द्र अहम् त्वत्तः शर्म
प्रपद्ये विप्र-मुख्य तस्मात् अभयम् प्रयच्छ
9. Marutta said: 'This floating stone is not seen by him (Indra) today, as the distance is great. I seek refuge from you, O best of brahmins. Therefore, grant me fearlessness, O foremost brahmin!'
अयमायाति वै वज्री दिशो विद्योतयन्दश ।
अमानुषेण घोरेण सदस्यास्त्रासिता हि नः ॥१०॥
10. ayamāyāti vai vajrī diśo vidyotayandaśa ,
amānuṣeṇa ghoreṇa sadasyāstrāsitā hi naḥ.
10. ayam āyāti vai vajrī diśaḥ vidyotayan daśa
| amānuṣeṇa ghoreṇa sadasyāḥ trāsitāḥ hi naḥ
10. vai ayam vajrī daśa diśaḥ vidyotayan āyāti
hi naḥ sadasyāḥ amānuṣeṇa ghoreṇa trāsitāḥ
10. Indeed, the wielder of the thunderbolt (Vajrī) approaches, illuminating all ten directions. Our assembly members have been terrified by a dreadful, superhuman presence.
संवर्त उवाच ।
भयं शक्राद्व्येतु ते राजसिंह प्रणोत्स्येऽहं भयमेतत्सुघोरम् ।
संस्तम्भिन्या विद्यया क्षिप्रमेव मा भैस्त्वमस्माद्भव चापि प्रतीतः ॥११॥
11. saṁvarta uvāca ,
bhayaṁ śakrādvyetu te rājasiṁha; praṇotsye'haṁ bhayametatsughoram ,
saṁstambhinyā vidyayā kṣiprameva; mā bhaistvamasmādbhava cāpi pratītaḥ.
11. saṃvartaḥ uvāca | bhayam śakrāt vyetu te
rājasiṃha praṇotsye aham bhayam etat sughoram
| saṃstambhinyā vidyayā kṣipram eva
mā bhaiḥ tvam asmāt bhava ca api pratītaḥ
11. saṃvartaḥ uvāca rājasiṃha te śakrāt bhayam
vyetu aham etat sughoram bhayam praṇotsye
kṣipram eva saṃstambhinyā vidyayā
tvam asmāt mā bhaiḥ ca api pratītaḥ bhava
11. Saṃvarta said: 'O lion among kings, let your fear of Śakra (Indra) vanish. I shall indeed dispel this extremely dreadful fear. With the paralyzing knowledge (saṃstambhinī vidyā), I will swiftly ensure it. Do not be afraid of this, and also be confident!'
अहं संस्तम्भयिष्यामि मा भैस्त्वं शक्रतो नृप ।
सर्वेषामेव देवानां क्षपितान्यायुधानि मे ॥१२॥
12. ahaṁ saṁstambhayiṣyāmi mā bhaistvaṁ śakrato nṛpa ,
sarveṣāmeva devānāṁ kṣapitānyāyudhāni me.
12. aham saṃstambhayiṣyāmi mā bhaiḥ tvam śakrataḥ
nṛpa | sarveṣām eva devānām kṣapitāni āyudhāni me
12. nṛpa aham saṃstambhayiṣyāmi tvam śakrataḥ mā
bhaiḥ eva sarveṣām devānām āyudhāni me kṣapitāni
12. O king, I shall paralyze (Śakra); do not be afraid of Śakra (Indra). Indeed, all the weapons of the gods have been rendered ineffective by me.
दिशो वज्रं व्रजतां वायुरेतु वर्षं भूत्वा निपततु काननेषु ।
आपः प्लवन्त्वन्तरिक्षे वृथा च सौदामिनी दृश्यतां मा बिभस्त्वम् ॥१३॥
13. diśo vajraṁ vrajatāṁ vāyuretu; varṣaṁ bhūtvā nipatatu kānaneṣu ,
āpaḥ plavantvantarikṣe vṛthā ca; saudāminī dṛśyatāṁ mā bibhastvam.
13. diśaḥ vajram vrajatām vāyuḥ etu
varṣam bhūtvā nipatatu kānaneṣu |
āpaḥ plavantu antarikṣe vṛthā ca
saudāminī dṛśyatām mā bibhaḥ tvam
13. vajram diśaḥ vrajatām vāyuḥ etu (saḥ)
varṣam bhūtvā kānaneṣu nipatatu
āpaḥ antarikṣe vṛthā plavantu ca
saudāminī vṛthā dṛśyatām tvam mā bibhaḥ
13. Let the thunderbolt go towards other directions. Let the wind come, and let it become rain and fall upon the forests. Let the waters float uselessly in the sky, and let the lightning (saudāminī) be seen in vain. Do not be afraid.
अथो वह्निस्त्रातु वा सर्वतस्ते कामं वर्षं वर्षतु वासवो वा ।
वज्रं तथा स्थापयतां च वायुर्महाघोरं प्लवमानं जलौघैः ॥१४॥
14. atho vahnistrātu vā sarvataste; kāmaṁ varṣaṁ varṣatu vāsavo vā ,
vajraṁ tathā sthāpayatāṁ ca vāyu;rmahāghoraṁ plavamānaṁ jalaughaiḥ.
14. atho vahniḥ trātu vā sarvataḥ te
kāmam varṣam varṣatu vāsavaḥ vā |
vajram tathā sthāpayatām ca vāyuḥ
mahāghoram plavamānam jalaughaiḥ
14. atho vahniḥ te sarvataḥ trātu vā,
vāsavaḥ vā kāmam varṣam varṣatu.
tathā ca vāyuḥ jalaughaiḥ plavamānam mahāghoram vajram sthāpayatām.
14. And now, let Agni protect you from all sides, or let Vasava (Indra) bring desired rain. And likewise, let [the deities including] Vayu stabilize the exceedingly dreadful thunderbolt, which is floating amidst torrents of water.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
घोरः शब्दः श्रूयते वै महास्वनो वज्रस्यैष सहितो मारुतेन ।
आत्मा हि मे प्रव्यथते मुहुर्मुहुर्न मे स्वास्थ्यं जायते चाद्य विप्र ॥१५॥
15. marutta uvāca ,
ghoraḥ śabdaḥ śrūyate vai mahāsvano; vajrasyaiṣa sahito mārutena ,
ātmā hi me pravyathate muhurmuhu;rna me svāsthyaṁ jāyate cādya vipra.
15. Maruttaḥ uvāca | ghoraḥ śabdaḥ śrūyate
vai mahāsvanaḥ vajrasya eṣaḥ sahitaḥ
mārutena | ātmā hi me pravyathate muhuḥ
muhuḥ na me svāsthyam jāyate ca adya vipra
15. Maruttaḥ uvāca: Vai ghoraḥ mahāsvanaḥ śabdaḥ śrūyate.
Eṣaḥ vajrasya mārutena sahitaḥ (asti).
Hi me ātmā muhuḥ muhuḥ pravyathate.
Ca adya vipra me svāsthyam na jāyate.
15. Marutta said: 'A dreadful sound is heard, indeed, a great roar of the thunderbolt, accompanied by the wind. My inner self (ātman) is greatly distressed repeatedly; I do not experience peace of mind today, O brahmin.'
संवर्त उवाच ।
वज्रादुग्राद्व्येतु भयं तवाद्य वातो भूत्वा हन्मि नरेन्द्र वज्रम् ।
भयं त्यक्त्वा वरमन्यं वृणीष्व कं ते कामं तपसा साधयामि ॥१६॥
16. saṁvarta uvāca ,
vajrādugrādvyetu bhayaṁ tavādya; vāto bhūtvā hanmi narendra vajram ,
bhayaṁ tyaktvā varamanyaṁ vṛṇīṣva; kaṁ te kāmaṁ tapasā sādhayāmi.
16. Saṃvartaḥ uvāca | vajrāt ugrāt vyetu
bhayam tava adya vātaḥ bhūtvā hanmi
narendra vajram | bhayam tyaktvā varam
anyam vṛṇīṣva kam te kāmam tapasā sādhayāmi
16. Saṃvartaḥ uvāca: Narendra,
adya tava ugrāt vajrāt bhayam vyetu.
Vātaḥ bhūtvā vajram hanmi.
Bhayam tyaktvā anyam varam vṛṇīṣva.
Te kam kāmam tapasā sādhayāmi?
16. Saṃvarta said: 'Let your fear of the dreadful thunderbolt vanish today. Becoming the wind, O king, I will strike down the thunderbolt. Abandoning fear, choose another boon. What desire of yours shall I accomplish through ascetic practice (tapas)?'
मरुत्त उवाच ।
इन्द्रः साक्षात्सहसाभ्येतु विप्र हविर्यज्ञे प्रतिगृह्णातु चैव ।
स्वं स्वं धिष्ण्यं चैव जुषन्तु देवाः सुतं सोमं प्रतिगृह्णन्तु चैव ॥१७॥
17. marutta uvāca ,
indraḥ sākṣātsahasābhyetu vipra; haviryajñe pratigṛhṇātu caiva ,
svaṁ svaṁ dhiṣṇyaṁ caiva juṣantu devāḥ; sutaṁ somaṁ pratigṛhṇantu caiva.
17. Maruttaḥ uvāca | Indraḥ sākṣāt sahasā
abhyetu vipra haviḥ yajñe pratigṛhṇātu ca
eva | svam svam dhiṣṇyam ca eva juṣantu
devāḥ sutam somam pratigṛhṇantu ca eva
17. Maruttaḥ uvāca: Vipra,
Indraḥ sākṣāt sahasā abhyetu.
Ca eva yajñe haviḥ pratigṛhṇātu.
Devāḥ ca eva svam svam dhiṣṇyam juṣantu.
Ca eva sutam somam pratigṛhṇantu.
17. Marutta said: 'Let Indra himself come swiftly, O brahmin, and let him accept the oblation in this Vedic ritual (yajña). And let the gods indeed enjoy their respective dwelling places, and also accept the pressed soma (soma juice).'
संवर्त उवाच ।
अयमिन्द्रो हरिभिरायाति राजन्देवैः सर्वैः सहितः सोमपीथी ।
मन्त्राहूतो यज्ञमिमं मयाद्य पश्यस्वैनं मन्त्रविस्रस्तकायम् ॥१८॥
18. saṁvarta uvāca ,
ayamindro haribhirāyāti rāja;ndevaiḥ sarvaiḥ sahitaḥ somapīthī ,
mantrāhūto yajñamimaṁ mayādya; paśyasvainaṁ mantravisrastakāyam.
18. saṃvartaḥ uvāca ayam indraḥ haribhiḥ
āyāti rājan devaiḥ sarvaiḥ sahitaḥ
somapīthī mantrāhūtaḥ yajñam imam mayā
adya paśyasva enam mantravisrastakāyam
18. rājan saṃvartaḥ uvāca ayam indraḥ
haribhiḥ sarvaiḥ devaiḥ sahitaḥ somapīthī
āyāti mantrāhūtaḥ mayā adya imam
yajñam enam mantravisrastakāyam paśyasva
18. Samvarta said: "O King, here comes Indra with his tawny horses, accompanied by all the gods, a drinker of soma. He has been invoked by my mantras to this Vedic ritual (yajña) today. Behold him, his body softened by the power of the mantras."
व्यास उवाच ।
ततो देवैः सहितो देवराजो रथे युक्त्वा तान्हरीन्वाजिमुख्यान् ।
आयाद्यज्ञमधि राज्ञः पिपासुराविक्षितस्याप्रमेयस्य सोमम् ॥१९॥
19. vyāsa uvāca ,
tato devaiḥ sahito devarājo; rathe yuktvā tānharīnvājimukhyān ,
āyādyajñamadhi rājñaḥ pipāsu;rāvikṣitasyāprameyasya somam.
19. vyāsaḥ uvāca tataḥ devaiḥ sahitaḥ
devarājaḥ rathe yuktvā tān harīn
vājimukhyān āyāt yajñam adhi rājñaḥ
pipāsuḥ āvikṣitasya aprameyasya somam
19. vyāsaḥ uvāca tataḥ devaiḥ sahitaḥ
devarājaḥ tān vājimukhyān harīn rathe
yuktvā āvikṣitasya aprameyasya
rājñaḥ yajñam adhi somam pipāsuḥ āyāt
19. Vyasa said: Then the king of the gods, Indra, accompanied by the other gods, yoking those excellent tawny horses to his chariot, came to the (Vedic ritual) yajña of the immeasurable king Avikṣita, desirous of drinking the soma.
तमायान्तं सहितं देवसंघैः प्रत्युद्ययौ सपुरोधा मरुत्तः ।
चक्रे पूजां देवराजाय चाग्र्यां यथाशास्त्रं विधिवत्प्रीयमाणः ॥२०॥
20. tamāyāntaṁ sahitaṁ devasaṁghaiḥ; pratyudyayau sapurodhā maruttaḥ ,
cakre pūjāṁ devarājāya cāgryāṁ; yathāśāstraṁ vidhivatprīyamāṇaḥ.
20. tam āyāntam sahitam devasaṃghaiḥ
pratyudyayau sapurodhā maruttaḥ
cakre pūjām devarājāya ca agryām
yathāśāstram vidhivat prīyamāṇaḥ
20. sapurodhā maruttaḥ devasaṃghaiḥ
sahitam tam āyāntam pratyudyayau
prīyamāṇaḥ ca devarājāya yathāśāstram
vidhivat agryām pūjām cakre
20. Marutta, accompanied by his priest, went forth to meet him as he was approaching, together with the hosts of gods. Delighted, he performed an excellent worship for the king of gods, according to the scriptures and proper rites.
संवर्त उवाच ।
स्वागतं ते पुरुहूतेह विद्वन्यज्ञोऽद्यायं संनिहिते त्वयीन्द्र ।
शोशुभ्यते बलवृत्रघ्न भूयः पिबस्व सोमं सुतमुद्यतं मया ॥२१॥
21. saṁvarta uvāca ,
svāgataṁ te puruhūteha vidva;nyajño'dyāyaṁ saṁnihite tvayīndra ,
śośubhyate balavṛtraghna bhūyaḥ; pibasva somaṁ sutamudyataṁ mayā.
21. saṃvartaḥ uvāca svāgatam te puruhūta
iha vidvan yajñaḥ adya ayam saṃnihite
tvayi indra śośubhyate balavṛtraghna
bhūyaḥ pibasva somam sutam udyatam mayā
21. saṃvartaḥ uvāca puruhūta vidvan iha te
svāgatam indra tvayi saṃnihite ayam
yajñaḥ adya bhūyaḥ śośubhyate
balavṛtraghna somam sutam udyatam mayā pibasva
21. Samvarta said: "Welcome to you here, O learned one, O widely invoked Indra! This Vedic ritual (yajña) shines brightly today, now that you are present. O Slayer of Vṛtra and mighty one, drink again the soma juice prepared and offered by me."
मरुत्त उवाच ।
शिवेन मां पश्य नमश्च तेऽस्तु प्राप्तो यज्ञः सफलं जीवितं मे ।
अयं यज्ञं कुरुते मे सुरेन्द्र बृहस्पतेरवरो जन्मना यः ॥२२॥
22. marutta uvāca ,
śivena māṁ paśya namaśca te'stu; prāpto yajñaḥ saphalaṁ jīvitaṁ me ,
ayaṁ yajñaṁ kurute me surendra; bṛhaspateravaro janmanā yaḥ.
22. maruttaḥ uvāca śivena mām paśya namaḥ
ca te astu prāptaḥ yajñaḥ saphaḷam
jīvitam me ayam yajñam kurute me
surendra bṛhaspateḥ avaraḥ janmanā yaḥ
22. maruttaḥ uvāca surendra śivena mām
paśya ca namaḥ te astu me yajñaḥ prāptaḥ
me jīvitam saphaḷam ayam yaḥ
bṛhaspateḥ janmanā avaraḥ me yajñam kurute
22. Marutta said: Look upon me auspiciously, and salutations to you! My Vedic ritual (yajña) has been attained, and my life is fruitful. O king of gods, this one performs my Vedic ritual (yajña) for me, he who is younger than Brihaspati by birth.
इन्द्र उवाच ।
जानामि ते गुरुमेनं तपोधनं बृहस्पतेरनुजं तिग्मतेजसम् ।
यस्याह्वानादागतोऽहं नरेन्द्र प्रीतिर्मेऽद्य त्वयि मन्युः प्रनष्टः ॥२३॥
23. indra uvāca ,
jānāmi te gurumenaṁ tapodhanaṁ; bṛhaspateranujaṁ tigmatejasam ,
yasyāhvānādāgato'haṁ narendra; prītirme'dya tvayi manyuḥ pranaṣṭaḥ.
23. indraḥ uvāca jānāmi te gurum enam
tapodhanam bṛhaspateḥ anujam tigmatajasam
yasya āhvānāt āgataḥ aham narendra
prītiḥ me adya tvayi manyuḥ pranaṣṭaḥ

tapodhanam bṛhaspateḥ anujam tigmatajasam
jānāmi yasya āhvānāt aham āgataḥ
me prītiḥ adya tvayi manyuḥ pranaṣṭaḥ
23. Indra said: "I know this preceptor (guru) of yours, rich in austerity (tapas), the younger brother of Brihaspati, who possesses sharp brilliance. O king (narendra), I have come here at his invitation. My affection for you is now present, and my displeasure has vanished."
संवर्त उवाच ।
यदि प्रीतस्त्वमसि वै देवराज तस्मात्स्वयं शाधि यज्ञे विधानम् ।
स्वयं सर्वान्कुरु मार्गान्सुरेन्द्र जानात्वयं सर्वलोकश्च देव ॥२४॥
24. saṁvarta uvāca ,
yadi prītastvamasi vai devarāja; tasmātsvayaṁ śādhi yajñe vidhānam ,
svayaṁ sarvānkuru mārgānsurendra; jānātvayaṁ sarvalokaśca deva.
24. saṃvartaḥ uvāca yadi prītaḥ tvam asi
vai devarāja tasmāt svayam śādhi yajñe
vidhānam svayam sarvān kuru mārgān
surendra jānātu ayam sarvalokaḥ ca deva
24. saṃvartaḥ uvāca devarāja yadi tvam vai
prītaḥ asi tasmāt svayam yajñe vidhānam
śādhi surendra svayam sarvān mārgān
kuru ca deva ayam sarvalokaḥ jānātu
24. Saṃvarta said: "O king of gods (devarāja), if you are indeed pleased, then you yourself ordain the procedure for this Vedic ritual (yajña). O king of gods (surendra), make all the arrangements yourself! And let all these worlds, O god, know this!"
व्यास उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्त्वाङ्गिरसेन शक्रः समादिदेश स्वयमेव देवान् ।
सभाः क्रियन्तामावसथाश्च मुख्याः सहस्रशश्चित्रभौमाः समृद्धाः ॥२५॥
25. vyāsa uvāca ,
evamuktastvāṅgirasena śakraḥ; samādideśa svayameva devān ,
sabhāḥ kriyantāmāvasathāśca mukhyāḥ; sahasraśaścitrabhaumāḥ samṛddhāḥ.
25. vyāsaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tu āṅgirasena
śakraḥ samādideśa svayam eva devān
sabhāḥ kriyantām āvasathāḥ ca mukhyāḥ
sahasraśaḥ citrabhāumāḥ samṛddhāḥ

śakraḥ svayam eva devān samādideśa
sabhāḥ ca mukhyāḥ āvasathāḥ sahasraśaḥ
citrabhāumāḥ samṛddhāḥ kriyantām
25. Vyāsa said: "Thus addressed by Aṅgirasa (Saṃvarta), Indra himself immediately commanded the gods: 'Let thousands of chief halls and dwellings be constructed, having colorful grounds and being richly equipped!'"
कॢप्तस्थूणाः कुरुतारोहणानि गन्धर्वाणामप्सरसां च शीघ्रम् ।
येषु नृत्येरन्नप्सरसः सहस्रशः स्वर्गोद्देशः क्रियतां यज्ञवाटः ॥२६॥
26. kḷptasthūṇāḥ kurutārohaṇāni; gandharvāṇāmapsarasāṁ ca śīghram ,
yeṣu nṛtyerannapsarasaḥ sahasraśaḥ; svargoddeśaḥ kriyatāṁ yajñavāṭaḥ.

yeṣu sahasraśaḥ apsarasaḥ nṛtyeran
yajñavāṭaḥ svargoddeśaḥ kriyatām
26. Quickly construct raised platforms with fixed pillars for the Gandharvas and Apsaras, upon which thousands of Apsaras may dance. Let the enclosure for the Vedic ritual (yajña) be made like a heavenly region.
इत्युक्तास्ते चक्रुराशु प्रतीता दिवौकसः शक्रवाक्यान्नरेन्द्र ।
ततो वाक्यं प्राह राजानमिन्द्रः प्रीतो राजन्पूजयानो मरुत्तम् ॥२७॥
27. ityuktāste cakrurāśu pratītā; divaukasaḥ śakravākyānnarendra ,
tato vākyaṁ prāha rājānamindraḥ; prīto rājanpūjayāno maruttam.
27. iti uktāḥ te cakruḥ āśu pratītāḥ
divaukasaḥ śakravākyāt narendra
tataḥ vākyam prāha rājānam indraḥ
prītaḥ rājan pūjayānaḥ maruttam
27. narendra iti uktāḥ te divaukasaḥ
śakravākyāt pratītāḥ āśu cakruḥ
tataḥ prītaḥ indraḥ maruttam
pūjayānaḥ rājānam vākyam prāha rājan
27. O King, thus addressed, the confident gods, convinced by Indra's words, quickly proceeded. Then, pleased, Indra spoke to King Marutta, honoring him, saying, "O King..."
एष त्वयाहमिह राजन्समेत्य ये चाप्यन्ये तव पूर्वे नरेन्द्राः ।
सर्वाश्चान्या देवताः प्रीयमाणा हविस्तुभ्यं प्रतिगृह्णन्तु राजन् ॥२८॥
28. eṣa tvayāhamiha rājansametya; ye cāpyanye tava pūrve narendrāḥ ,
sarvāścānyā devatāḥ prīyamāṇā; havistubhyaṁ pratigṛhṇantu rājan.
28. eṣaḥ tvayā aham iha rājan sametya
ye ca api anye tava pūrve narendrāḥ
sarvāḥ ca anyāḥ devatāḥ prīyamāṇāḥ
haviḥ tubhyam pratigṛhṇantu rājan

28. "O King, I myself, having come here with you, and also all your other former kings, along with all other pleased deities, O King, let them accept this offering (havis) from you."
आग्नेयं वै लोहितमालभन्तां वैश्वदेवं बहुरूपं विराजन् ।
नीलं चोक्षाणं मेध्यमभ्यालभन्तां चलच्छिश्नं मत्प्रदिष्टं द्विजेन्द्राः ॥२९॥
29. āgneyaṁ vai lohitamālabhantāṁ; vaiśvadevaṁ bahurūpaṁ virājan ,
nīlaṁ cokṣāṇaṁ medhyamabhyālabhantāṁ; calacchiśnaṁ matpradiṣṭaṁ dvijendrāḥ.
29. āgneyaṃ vai lohitam ālabhantām
vaiśvadevam bahurūpam virājan nīlam ca
ukṣāṇam medhyam abhyālabhantām
calacchiśnam matpradiṣṭam dvijendrāḥ
29. virājan dvijendrāḥ vai matpradiṣṭam
āgneyaṃ lohitam vaiśvadevam
bahurūpam ca nīlam ukṣāṇam medhyam
calacchiśnam ālabhantām abhyālabhantām
29. "O glorious one, O chief of Brahmins (dvija), let them indeed offer a red animal for Agni and a multi-colored one for the Viśvedevas. And let them offer a blue bull, which is pure and virile (calacchiśnam), as commanded by me."
ततो यज्ञो ववृधे तस्य राज्ञो यत्र देवाः स्वयमन्नानि जह्रुः ।
यस्मिञ्शक्रो ब्राह्मणैः पूज्यमानः सदस्योऽभूद्धरिमान्देवराजः ॥३०॥
30. tato yajño vavṛdhe tasya rājño; yatra devāḥ svayamannāni jahruḥ ,
yasmiñśakro brāhmaṇaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ; sadasyo'bhūddharimāndevarājaḥ.
30. tataḥ yajñaḥ vavṛdhe tasya rājñaḥ
yatra devāḥ svayam annāni jahruḥ
yasmin śakraḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ
sadasyaḥ abhūt harimān devarājaḥ
30. tataḥ tasya rājñaḥ yajñaḥ vavṛdhe
yatra devāḥ svayam annāni jahruḥ
yasmin śakraḥ devarājaḥ harimān
brāhmaṇaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ sadasyaḥ abhūt
30. Then that king's Vedic ritual (yajña) flourished, in which the gods themselves accepted the offerings. Within that assembly, Indra (śakra), the glorious king of the gods, being honored by the brahmins, became a participant.
ततः संवर्तश्चित्यगतो महात्मा यथा वह्निः प्रज्वलितो द्वितीयः ।
हवींष्युच्चैराह्वयन्देवसंघाञ्जुहावाग्नौ मन्त्रवत्सुप्रतीतः ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ saṁvartaścityagato mahātmā; yathā vahniḥ prajvalito dvitīyaḥ ,
havīṁṣyuccairāhvayandevasaṁghā;ñjuhāvāgnau mantravatsupratītaḥ.
31. tataḥ saṃvartaḥ cityagataḥ mahātmā
yathā vahniḥ prajvalitaḥ dvitīyaḥ
havīṃṣi uccaiḥ āhvayan devasaṃghān
juhāva agnau mantravat supratītaḥ
31. tataḥ mahātmā saṃvartaḥ cityagataḥ
dvitīyaḥ prajvalitaḥ vahniḥ yathā
uccaiḥ devasaṃghān āhvayan mantravat
supratītaḥ agnau havīṃṣi juhāva
31. Then the great (mahātman) Saṃvarta, having approached the fire-altar, like a second blazing fire, loudly invoked the hosts of gods and, utterly pleased, offered oblations into the fire with sacred formulae (mantra).
ततः पीत्वा बलभित्सोममग्र्यं ये चाप्यन्ये सोमपा वै दिवौकसः ।
सर्वेऽनुज्ञाताः प्रययुः पार्थिवेन यथाजोषं तर्पिताः प्रीतिमन्तः ॥३२॥
32. tataḥ pītvā balabhitsomamagryaṁ; ye cāpyanye somapā vai divaukasaḥ ,
sarve'nujñātāḥ prayayuḥ pārthivena; yathājoṣaṁ tarpitāḥ prītimantaḥ.
32. tataḥ pītvā balabhit somam agryam
ye ca api anye somapā vai divaukasaḥ
sarve anujñātāḥ prayayuḥ pārthivena
yathājoṣam tarpitāḥ prītimantaḥ
32. tataḥ balabhit ca anye ye somapā
divaukasaḥ vai agryam somam pītvā
sarve pārthivena anujñātāḥ yathājoṣam
tarpitāḥ prītimantaḥ prayayuḥ
32. Then, after Indra (balabhit) and the other soma-drinking dwellers of heaven had consumed the excellent soma, all of them, permitted by the king, departed to their hearts' content, satisfied and filled with joy.
ततो राजा जातरूपस्य राशीन्पदे पदे कारयामास हृष्टः ।
द्विजातिभ्यो विसृजन्भूरि वित्तं रराज वित्तेश इवारिहन्ता ॥३३॥
33. tato rājā jātarūpasya rāśī;npade pade kārayāmāsa hṛṣṭaḥ ,
dvijātibhyo visṛjanbhūri vittaṁ; rarāja vitteśa ivārihantā.
33. tataḥ rājā jātarūpasya rāśīn pade pade kārayāmāsa hṛṣṭaḥ
dvijātibhyaḥ visṛjan bhūri vittaṃ rarāja vitteśaḥ iva arihantā
33. tataḥ hṛṣṭaḥ arihantā rājā jātarūpasya rāśīn pade pade
kārayāmāsa bhūri vittaṃ dvijātibhyaḥ visṛjan vitteśaḥ iva rarāja
33. Then, the joyful king, the destroyer of enemies, caused heaps of gold to be made at every step, and distributing abundant wealth to the twice-born (dvija), he shone like Kubera, the lord of riches.
ततो वित्तं विविधं संनिधाय यथोत्साहं कारयित्वा च कोशम् ।
अनुज्ञातो गुरुणा संनिवृत्य शशास गामखिलां सागरान्ताम् ॥३४॥
34. tato vittaṁ vividhaṁ saṁnidhāya; yathotsāhaṁ kārayitvā ca kośam ,
anujñāto guruṇā saṁnivṛtya; śaśāsa gāmakhilāṁ sāgarāntām.
34. tataḥ vittaṃ vividhaṃ saṃnidhāya
yathā utsāhaṃ kārayitvā ca
kośam anujñātaḥ guruṇā saṃnivṛtya
śaśāsa gām akhilāṃ sāgarāntām
34. tataḥ vividhaṃ vittaṃ saṃnidhāya
ca yathā utsāhaṃ kośam
kārayitvā guruṇā anujñātaḥ saṃnivṛtya
akhilāṃ sāgarāntām gām śaśāsa
34. Then, having collected various types of wealth and having managed the treasury according to his capacity, the king, after being permitted by his preceptor (guru), returned and ruled the entire earth extending to the oceans.
एवंगुणः संबभूवेह राजा यस्य क्रतौ तत्सुवर्णं प्रभूतम् ।
तत्त्वं समादाय नरेन्द्र वित्तं यजस्व देवांस्तर्पयानो विधानैः ॥३५॥
35. evaṁguṇaḥ saṁbabhūveha rājā; yasya kratau tatsuvarṇaṁ prabhūtam ,
tattvaṁ samādāya narendra vittaṁ; yajasva devāṁstarpayāno vidhānaiḥ.
35. evaṃguṇaḥ saṃbabhūva iha rājā yasya
kratou tat suvarṇam prabhūtam
tat tvam samādāya narendra vittam
yajasva devān tarpayāṇaḥ vidhānaiḥ
35. narendra evaṃguṇaḥ rājā iha saṃbabhūva,
yasya kratou prabhūtam suvarṇam tat.
tat tvam vittam samādāya vidhānaiḥ devān tarpayāṇaḥ yajasva.
35. Such a virtuous king indeed existed here, in whose great Vedic ritual (kratu) there was abundant gold. Therefore, O king, you should gather that wealth and perform a Vedic ritual, satisfying the gods with the prescribed procedures.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो राजा पाण्डवो हृष्टरूपः श्रुत्वा वाक्यं सत्यवत्याः सुतस्य ।
मनश्चक्रे तेन वित्तेन यष्टुं ततोऽमात्यैर्मन्त्रयामास भूयः ॥३६॥
36. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato rājā pāṇḍavo hṛṣṭarūpaḥ; śrutvā vākyaṁ satyavatyāḥ sutasya ,
manaścakre tena vittena yaṣṭuṁ; tato'mātyairmantrayāmāsa bhūyaḥ.
36. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ rājā pāṇḍavaḥ
hṛṣṭarūpaḥ śrutvā vākyam satyavatyāḥ
sutasya manaḥ cakre tena vittena
yaṣṭum tataḥ amātyaiḥ mantrayāmāsa bhūyaḥ
36. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca: tataḥ pāṇḍavaḥ rājā satyavatyāḥ sutasya vākyam śrutvā hṛṣṭarūpaḥ tena vittena yaṣṭum manaḥ cakre.
tataḥ bhūyaḥ amātyaiḥ mantrayāmāsa.
36. Vaiśampāyana said: Then the Pāṇḍava king (Yudhiṣṭhira), appearing joyous after hearing the words of the son of Satyavatī (Vyāsa), resolved to perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) with that wealth. Thereafter, he consulted with his ministers again.
