वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तांस्तु दृष्ट्वा सुमनसः परिसंवत्सरोषितान् ।
विश्वस्तानिव संलक्ष्य हर्षं चक्रे पुरोचनः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tāṁstu dṛṣṭvā sumanasaḥ parisaṁvatsaroṣitān ,
viśvastāniva saṁlakṣya harṣaṁ cakre purocanaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Purocana, seeing them cheerful and having resided there for a year, and considering them to be trusting, felt joy."
पुरोचने तथा हृष्टे कौन्तेयोऽथ युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव यमौ चोवाच धर्मवित् ॥२॥
2. purocane tathā hṛṣṭe kaunteyo'tha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhīmasenārjunau caiva yamau covāca dharmavit.

bhīmasenārjunau ca eva yamau ca uvāca dharmavit
2. When Purocana was thus pleased, then Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti (Kaunteya) and the knower of natural law (dharma), spoke to Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the two Yamas.
अस्मानयं सुविश्वस्तान्वेत्ति पापः पुरोचनः ।
वञ्चितोऽयं नृशंसात्मा कालं मन्ये पलायने ॥३॥
3. asmānayaṁ suviśvastānvetti pāpaḥ purocanaḥ ,
vañcito'yaṁ nṛśaṁsātmā kālaṁ manye palāyane.
3. asmān ayam suviśvastān vetti pāpaḥ purocanaḥ
vañcitaḥ ayam nṛśaṃsātmā kālam manye palāyane
3. "This wicked Purocana considers us to be very trusting," [Yudhishthira said]. "This cruel-hearted fellow has been deceived. I believe it is time for our escape (palāyane)."
आयुधागारमादीप्य दग्ध्वा चैव पुरोचनम् ।
षट्प्राणिनो निधायेह द्रवामोऽनभिलक्षिताः ॥४॥
4. āyudhāgāramādīpya dagdhvā caiva purocanam ,
ṣaṭprāṇino nidhāyeha dravāmo'nabhilakṣitāḥ.
4. āyudhāgāram ādīpya dagdhvā ca eva purocanam
ṣaṭprāṇinaḥ nidhāya iha dravāmaḥ anabhilakṣitāḥ
4. After setting the armory ablaze, burning Purocana, and placing six bodies here, we will flee unnoticed.
अथ दानापदेशेन कुन्ती ब्राह्मणभोजनम् ।
चक्रे निशि महद्राजन्नाजग्मुस्तत्र योषितः ॥५॥
5. atha dānāpadeśena kuntī brāhmaṇabhojanam ,
cakre niśi mahadrājannājagmustatra yoṣitaḥ.

cakre niśi mahat rājan ājagmuḥ tatra yoṣitaḥ
5. Then, O King, Kunti arranged a large feast for Brahmins at night, under the guise of an offering (dāna), and women also came there.
ता विहृत्य यथाकामं भुक्त्वा पीत्वा च भारत ।
जग्मुर्निशि गृहानेव समनुज्ञाप्य माधवीम् ॥६॥
6. tā vihṛtya yathākāmaṁ bhuktvā pītvā ca bhārata ,
jagmurniśi gṛhāneva samanujñāpya mādhavīm.
6. tāḥ vihṛtya yathākāmam bhuktvā pītvā ca bhārata
jagmuḥ niśi gṛhān eva samanujñāpya mādhavīm
6. O Bhārata, after amusing themselves as they wished, and having eaten and drunk, they returned to their homes at night, after taking leave of Mādhavī (Kunti).
निषादी पञ्चपुत्रा तु तस्मिन्भोज्ये यदृच्छया ।
अन्नार्थिनी समभ्यागात्सपुत्रा कालचोदिता ॥७॥
7. niṣādī pañcaputrā tu tasminbhojye yadṛcchayā ,
annārthinī samabhyāgātsaputrā kālacoditā.

7. However, a Niṣāda woman with five sons, craving food, happened to arrive at that feast, driven by fate.
सा पीत्वा मदिरां मत्ता सपुत्रा मदविह्वला ।
सह सर्वैः सुतै राजंस्तस्मिन्नेव निवेशने ।
सुष्वाप विगतज्ञाना मृतकल्पा नराधिप ॥८॥
8. sā pītvā madirāṁ mattā saputrā madavihvalā ,
saha sarvaiḥ sutai rājaṁstasminneva niveśane ,
suṣvāpa vigatajñānā mṛtakalpā narādhipa.

madavihvalā saha sarvaiḥ sutaiḥ
rājan tasmin eva niveśane suṣvāpa
vigatajñānā mṛtakalpā narādhipa
8. O King, having drunk wine, she became intoxicated and, overwhelmed by the liquor, she, along with all her sons, fell asleep in that very dwelling, losing consciousness and appearing as if dead, O lord of men.
अथ प्रवाते तुमुले निशि सुप्ते जने विभो ।
तदुपादीपयद्भीमः शेते यत्र पुरोचनः ॥९॥
9. atha pravāte tumule niśi supte jane vibho ,
tadupādīpayadbhīmaḥ śete yatra purocanaḥ.

tat upādīpayat bhīmaḥ śete yatra purocanaḥ
9. Then, O mighty one, in a tumultuous wind at night, while the people were sleeping, Bhima set fire to the place where Purocana was lying.
ततः प्रतापः सुमहाञ्शब्दश्चैव विभावसोः ।
प्रादुरासीत्तदा तेन बुबुधे स जनव्रजः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ pratāpaḥ sumahāñśabdaścaiva vibhāvasoḥ ,
prādurāsīttadā tena bubudhe sa janavrajaḥ.
10. tataḥ pratāpaḥ su-mahān śabdaḥ ca eva vibhāvasoḥ
prādur āsīt tadā tena bubudhe sa janavrajaḥ
10. Then, a tremendous blaze and roar of the fire manifested. At that time, the multitude of people became aware of it.
पौरा ऊचुः ।
दुर्योधनप्रयुक्तेन पापेनाकृतबुद्धिना ।
गृहमात्मविनाशाय कारितं दाहितं च यत् ॥११॥
11. paurā ūcuḥ ,
duryodhanaprayuktena pāpenākṛtabuddhinā ,
gṛhamātmavināśāya kāritaṁ dāhitaṁ ca yat.
11. paurāḥ ūcuḥ duryodhana-prayuktena pāpena akṛta-buddhinā
gṛham ātma-vināśāya kāritam dāhitam ca yat
11. The citizens said: 'That house, which was built and burned by the evil (pāpa) and senseless individual, instigated by Duryodhana, was indeed for his own self-destruction (ātman).'
अहो धिग्धृतराष्ट्रस्य बुद्धिर्नातिसमञ्जसी ।
यः शुचीन्पाण्डवान्बालान्दाहयामास मन्त्रिणा ॥१२॥
12. aho dhigdhṛtarāṣṭrasya buddhirnātisamañjasī ,
yaḥ śucīnpāṇḍavānbālāndāhayāmāsa mantriṇā.
12. aho dhik dhṛtarāṣṭrasya buddhiḥ na ati-samañjasī
yaḥ śucīn pāṇḍavān bālān dāhayāmāsa mantriṇā
12. Oh, shame! Dhritarashtra's judgment (buddhi) is not at all proper (samañjasa), for he caused the pure and young Pandavas to be burned through his minister.
दिष्ट्या त्विदानीं पापात्मा दग्धोऽयमतिदुर्मतिः ।
अनागसः सुविश्वस्तान्यो ददाह नरोत्तमान् ॥१३॥
13. diṣṭyā tvidānīṁ pāpātmā dagdho'yamatidurmatiḥ ,
anāgasaḥ suviśvastānyo dadāha narottamān.
13. diṣṭyā tu idānīm pāpa-ātmā dagdhaḥ ayam ati-durmatiḥ
anāgasaḥ su-viśvastān yaḥ dadāha nara-uttamān
13. Fortunately, this evil-souled (pāpātman), extremely wicked-minded person, who burned the innocent and very trusting best of men, is now himself burned.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं ते विलपन्ति स्म वारणावतका जनाः ।
परिवार्य गृहं तच्च तस्थू रात्रौ समन्ततः ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ te vilapanti sma vāraṇāvatakā janāḥ ,
parivārya gṛhaṁ tacca tasthū rātrau samantataḥ.
14. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam te vilapanti sma vāraṇāvatakāḥ
janāḥ parivārya gṛham tat ca tasthūḥ rātrau samantataḥ
14. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus, the people of Vāraṇāvata lamented and stood all around that house throughout the night.
पाण्डवाश्चापि ते राजन्मात्रा सह सुदुःखिताः ।
बिलेन तेन निर्गत्य जग्मुर्गूढमलक्षिताः ॥१५॥
15. pāṇḍavāścāpi te rājanmātrā saha suduḥkhitāḥ ,
bilena tena nirgatya jagmurgūḍhamalakṣitāḥ.
15. pāṇḍavāḥ ca api te rājan mātrā saha su-duḥkhitāḥ
bilena tena nirgatya jagmuḥ gūḍham alakṣitāḥ
15. And, O King, the Pāṇḍavas, deeply distressed with their mother, came out through that tunnel and went secretly, unnoticed.
तेन निद्रोपरोधेन साध्वसेन च पाण्डवाः ।
न शेकुः सहसा गन्तुं सह मात्रा परंतपाः ॥१६॥
16. tena nidroparodhena sādhvasena ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
na śekuḥ sahasā gantuṁ saha mātrā paraṁtapāḥ.
16. tena nidrā-uparodhena sādhvasena ca pāṇḍavāḥ
na śekuḥ sahasā gantum saha mātrā parantapāḥ
16. Due to that obstruction of sleep and fear, the Pāṇḍavas, tormentors of foes, were not able to go quickly with their mother.
भीमसेनस्तु राजेन्द्र भीमवेगपराक्रमः ।
जगाम भ्रातॄनादाय सर्वान्मातरमेव च ॥१७॥
17. bhīmasenastu rājendra bhīmavegaparākramaḥ ,
jagāma bhrātṝnādāya sarvānmātarameva ca.
17. bhīmasenaḥ tu rājendra bhīma-vega-parākramaḥ
jagāma bhrātṝn ādāya sarvān mātaram eva ca
17. But Bhīmasena, O king of kings, who had tremendous speed and valor, went carrying all his brothers and his mother.
स्कन्धमारोप्य जननीं यमावङ्केन वीर्यवान् ।
पार्थौ गृहीत्वा पाणिभ्यां भ्रातरौ सुमहाबलौ ॥१८॥
18. skandhamāropya jananīṁ yamāvaṅkena vīryavān ,
pārthau gṛhītvā pāṇibhyāṁ bhrātarau sumahābalau.
18. skandham āropya jananīm yamau aṅkena vīryavān
pārthau gṛhītvā pāṇibhyām bhrātarau su-mahā-balau
18. The mighty one (Bhīmasena), having placed his mother on his shoulder and the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) on his lap, went, holding the two Pārthas (Yudhiṣṭhira and Arjuna)—his brothers of immense strength—in his hands.
तरसा पादपान्भञ्जन्महीं पद्भ्यां विदारयन् ।
स जगामाशु तेजस्वी वातरंहा वृकोदरः ॥१९॥
19. tarasā pādapānbhañjanmahīṁ padbhyāṁ vidārayan ,
sa jagāmāśu tejasvī vātaraṁhā vṛkodaraḥ.
19. tarasā pādapān bhañjan mahīm padbhyām vidārayan
sa jagāma āśu tejasvī vātaraṃhā vṛkodaraḥ
19. The powerful (tejasvī) Vrikodara (Bhīma), swift as the wind (vātaraṃhā), went quickly, forcefully breaking trees and tearing the earth with his feet.
