सूत उवाच ।
मातुः सकाशात्तं शापं श्रुत्वा पन्नगसत्तमः ।
वासुकिश्चिन्तयामास शापोऽयं न भवेत्कथम् ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
mātuḥ sakāśāttaṁ śāpaṁ śrutvā pannagasattamaḥ ,
vāsukiścintayāmāsa śāpo'yaṁ na bhavetkatham.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca mātuḥ sakāśāt tam śāpam śrutvā pannagasattamaḥ
vāsukiḥ cintayāmāsa śāpaḥ ayam na bhavet katham
1. Sūta said: Having heard that curse from his mother, Vāsuki, the best among serpents, pondered, 'How can this curse be averted?'
ततः स मन्त्रयामास भ्रातृभिः सह सर्वशः ।
ऐरावतप्रभृतिभिर्ये स्म धर्मपरायणाः ॥२॥
2. tataḥ sa mantrayāmāsa bhrātṛbhiḥ saha sarvaśaḥ ,
airāvataprabhṛtibhirye sma dharmaparāyaṇāḥ.
2. tataḥ saḥ mantrayāmāsa bhrātṛbhiḥ saha sarvaśaḥ
airāvataprabhṛtibhiḥ ye sma dharmaparāyaṇāḥ
2. Then he consulted with all his brothers, including Airāvata and others, who were devoted to righteousness.
वासुकिरुवाच ।
अयं शापो यथोद्दिष्टो विदितं वस्तथानघाः ।
तस्य शापस्य मोक्षार्थं मन्त्रयित्वा यतामहे ॥३॥
3. vāsukiruvāca ,
ayaṁ śāpo yathoddiṣṭo viditaṁ vastathānaghāḥ ,
tasya śāpasya mokṣārthaṁ mantrayitvā yatāmahe.
3. vāsukiḥ uvāca ayam śāpaḥ yathā uddiṣṭaḥ viditam vaḥ tathā
anaghāḥ tasya śāpasya mokṣārtham mantrayitvā yatāmahe
3. Vāsuki said: 'O sinless ones, this curse, as it was pronounced, is known to you. Therefore, having consulted, let us endeavor for its deliverance!'
सर्वेषामेव शापानां प्रतिघातो हि विद्यते ।
न तु मात्राभिशप्तानां मोक्षो विद्येत पन्नगाः ॥४॥
4. sarveṣāmeva śāpānāṁ pratighāto hi vidyate ,
na tu mātrābhiśaptānāṁ mokṣo vidyeta pannagāḥ.
4. sarveṣām eva śāpānām pratighātaḥ hi vidyate na
tu mātrābhiśaptānām mokṣaḥ vidyeta pannagāḥ
4. Indeed, for all curses, a counteraction exists. But, O serpents, there can be no release for those cursed by their mother.
अव्ययस्याप्रमेयस्य सत्यस्य च तथाग्रतः ।
शप्ता इत्येव मे श्रुत्वा जायते हृदि वेपथुः ॥५॥
5. avyayasyāprameyasya satyasya ca tathāgrataḥ ,
śaptā ityeva me śrutvā jāyate hṛdi vepathuḥ.
5. avyayasya aprameyasya satyasya ca tathā agrataḥ
śaptāḥ iti eva me śrutvā jāyate hṛdi vepathuḥ
5. Just hearing the words 'cursed' in the presence of the imperishable, the immeasurable, and the true, causes a trembling indeed to arise in my heart.
नूनं सर्वविनाशोऽयमस्माकं समुदाहृतः ।
न ह्येनां सोऽव्ययो देवः शपन्तीं प्रत्यषेधयत् ॥६॥
6. nūnaṁ sarvavināśo'yamasmākaṁ samudāhṛtaḥ ,
na hyenāṁ so'vyayo devaḥ śapantīṁ pratyaṣedhayat.
6. nūnam sarvavināśaḥ ayam asmākam samudāhṛtaḥ na hi
enām saḥ avyayaḥ devaḥ śapantīm pratyaṣedhayat
6. Indeed, this total destruction has been declared for us. For that imperishable god did not stop her when she was uttering the curse.
तस्मात्संमन्त्रयामोऽत्र भुजगानामनामयम् ।
यथा भवेत सर्वेषां मा नः कालोऽत्यगादयम् ॥७॥
7. tasmātsaṁmantrayāmo'tra bhujagānāmanāmayam ,
yathā bhaveta sarveṣāṁ mā naḥ kālo'tyagādayam.
7. tasmāt saṃmantrayāmaḥ atra bhujagānām anāmayam
yathā bhavet sarveṣām mā naḥ kālaḥ atyagāt ayam
7. Therefore, let us consult here concerning the welfare of the serpents, so that well-being may befall all of them, and this crucial time does not pass us by.
अपि मन्त्रयमाणा हि हेतुं पश्याम मोक्षणे ।
यथा नष्टं पुरा देवा गूढमग्निं गुहागतम् ॥८॥
8. api mantrayamāṇā hi hetuṁ paśyāma mokṣaṇe ,
yathā naṣṭaṁ purā devā gūḍhamagniṁ guhāgatam.
8. api mantrayamāṇāḥ hi hetum paśyāma mokṣaṇe
yathā naṣṭam purā devāḥ gūḍham agnim guhāgatam
8. Indeed, even as we deliberate, let us find a way to release, just as the gods in ancient times found the fire that was lost and hidden in a cave.
यथा स यज्ञो न भवेद्यथा वापि पराभवेत् ।
जनमेजयस्य सर्पाणां विनाशकरणाय हि ॥९॥
9. yathā sa yajño na bhavedyathā vāpi parābhavet ,
janamejayasya sarpāṇāṁ vināśakaraṇāya hi.
9. yathā saḥ yajñaḥ na bhavet yathā vā api parābhavet
janamejayasya sarpāṇām vināśakaraṇāya hi
9. So that this sacrifice of Janamejaya's, intended for the destruction of serpents, may not take place, or even if it does, may be thwarted.
सूत उवाच ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे काद्रवेयाः समागताः ।
समयं चक्रिरे तत्र मन्त्रबुद्धिविशारदाः ॥१०॥
10. sūta uvāca ,
tathetyuktvā tu te sarve kādraveyāḥ samāgatāḥ ,
samayaṁ cakrire tatra mantrabuddhiviśāradāḥ.
10. sūtaḥ uvāca | tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve kādraveyāḥ
samāgatāḥ | samayam cakrire tatra mantrabuddhivśāradāḥ
10. Sūta said: Having agreed to this, all those sons of Kadru, who were skilled in counsel and intellect, then assembled there and made a resolution.
एके तत्राब्रुवन्नागा वयं भूत्वा द्विजर्षभाः ।
जनमेजयं तं भिक्षामो यज्ञस्ते न भवेदिति ॥११॥
11. eke tatrābruvannāgā vayaṁ bhūtvā dvijarṣabhāḥ ,
janamejayaṁ taṁ bhikṣāmo yajñaste na bhavediti.
11. eke tatra abruvan nāgāḥ vayam bhūtvā dvijarṣabhāḥ
| janamejayam tam bhikṣāmaḥ yajñaḥ te na bhavet iti
11. Some of the Nāgas there said, "Assuming the guise of distinguished brahmins, we will approach Janamejaya and implore him, 'May this sacrifice not take place for you!'"
अपरे त्वब्रुवन्नागास्तत्र पण्डितमानिनः ।
मन्त्रिणोऽस्य वयं सर्वे भविष्यामः सुसंमताः ॥१२॥
12. apare tvabruvannāgāstatra paṇḍitamāninaḥ ,
mantriṇo'sya vayaṁ sarve bhaviṣyāmaḥ susaṁmatāḥ.
12. apare tu abruvan nāgāḥ tatra paṇḍitamāninaḥ |
mantriṇaḥ asya vayam sarve bhaviṣyāmaḥ susammatāḥ
12. Other Nāgas there, who deemed themselves wise, then said, "All of us will become his highly esteemed ministers."
स नः प्रक्ष्यति सर्वेषु कार्येष्वर्थविनिश्चयम् ।
तत्र बुद्धिं प्रवक्ष्यामो यथा यज्ञो निवर्तते ॥१३॥
13. sa naḥ prakṣyati sarveṣu kāryeṣvarthaviniścayam ,
tatra buddhiṁ pravakṣyāmo yathā yajño nivartate.
13. saḥ naḥ prakṣyati sarveṣu kāryeṣu arthaviniścayam
| tatra buddhim pravakṣyāmaḥ yathā yajñaḥ nivartate
13. He will consult us on the proper course of action for all his affairs. Then, we will offer counsel in such a way that the sacrifice is stopped.
स नो बहुमतान्राजा बुद्ध्वा बुद्धिमतां वरः ।
यज्ञार्थं प्रक्ष्यति व्यक्तं नेति वक्ष्यामहे वयम् ॥१४॥
14. sa no bahumatānrājā buddhvā buddhimatāṁ varaḥ ,
yajñārthaṁ prakṣyati vyaktaṁ neti vakṣyāmahe vayam.
14. saḥ naḥ bahumatān rājā buddhvā buddhimatām varaḥ |
yajñārtham prakṣyati vyaktam na iti vakṣyāmahe vayam
14. That king, the foremost among the intelligent, having recognized us as highly esteemed, will clearly inquire about the sacrifice's purpose. Then, we will firmly say 'No'.
दर्शयन्तो बहून्दोषान्प्रेत्य चेह च दारुणान् ।
हेतुभिः कारणैश्चैव यथा यज्ञो भवेन्न सः ॥१५॥
15. darśayanto bahūndoṣānpretya ceha ca dāruṇān ,
hetubhiḥ kāraṇaiścaiva yathā yajño bhavenna saḥ.
15. darśayantaḥ bahūn doṣān pretya ca iha ca dāruṇān
hetubhiḥ kāraṇaiḥ ca eva yathā yajñaḥ bhavet na saḥ
15. By pointing out, through reasons and causes, the many dreadful faults [that would arise] both in this world and the next, [we can ensure] that that sacrifice will not proceed.
अथ वा य उपाध्यायः क्रतौ तस्मिन्भविष्यति ।
सर्पसत्रविधानज्ञो राजकार्यहिते रतः ॥१६॥
16. atha vā ya upādhyāyaḥ kratau tasminbhaviṣyati ,
sarpasatravidhānajño rājakāryahite rataḥ.
16. atha vā yaḥ upādhyāyaḥ kratau tasmin bhaviṣyati
sarpasatra-vidhānajñaḥ rājakārya-hite rataḥ
16. Alternatively, the preceptor who will be at that sacrifice, one who is skilled in the procedures of the snake sacrifice and dedicated to the welfare of the king's endeavors...
तं गत्वा दशतां कश्चिद्भुजगः स मरिष्यति ।
तस्मिन्हते यज्ञकरे क्रतुः स न भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. taṁ gatvā daśatāṁ kaścidbhujagaḥ sa mariṣyati ,
tasminhate yajñakare kratuḥ sa na bhaviṣyati.
17. tam gatvā daśatām kaścit bhujagaḥ saḥ mariṣyati
tasmin hate yajñakare kratuḥ saḥ na bhaviṣyati
17. Some serpent will go and bite him, and that priest will die. With that sacrifice-performer dead, that sacrifice will not take place.
ये चान्ये सर्पसत्रज्ञा भविष्यन्त्यस्य ऋत्विजः ।
तांश्च सर्वान्दशिष्यामः कृतमेवं भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. ye cānye sarpasatrajñā bhaviṣyantyasya ṛtvijaḥ ,
tāṁśca sarvāndaśiṣyāmaḥ kṛtamevaṁ bhaviṣyati.
18. ye ca anye sarpasatra-jñāḥ bhaviṣyanti asya ṛtvijaḥ
tān ca sarvān daśiṣyāmaḥ kṛtam evam bhaviṣyati
18. And those other priests of this (sacrifice) who will be knowledgeable in the snake sacrifice - we will bite all of them as well. In this way, it will be accomplished.
तत्रापरेऽमन्त्रयन्त धर्मात्मानो भुजंगमाः ।
अबुद्धिरेषा युष्माकं ब्रह्महत्या न शोभना ॥१९॥
19. tatrāpare'mantrayanta dharmātmāno bhujaṁgamāḥ ,
abuddhireṣā yuṣmākaṁ brahmahatyā na śobhanā.
19. tatra apare amantrayanta dharmātmānaḥ bhujagamāḥ
abuddhiḥ eṣā yuṣmākam brahmahatyā na śobhanā
19. Then, among them, other righteous serpents deliberated, saying: 'This is folly on your part; the killing of a Brahmin is not proper.'
सम्यक्सद्धर्ममूला हि व्यसने शान्तिरुत्तमा ।
अधर्मोत्तरता नाम कृत्स्नं व्यापादयेज्जगत् ॥२०॥
20. samyaksaddharmamūlā hi vyasane śāntiruttamā ,
adharmottaratā nāma kṛtsnaṁ vyāpādayejjagat.
20. samyak saddharmamūlā hi vyasane śāntiḥ uttamā
adharmottaratā nāma kṛtsnam vyāpādayet jagat
20. For in times of calamity, supreme peace is indeed rooted in true righteousness. The prevalence of unrighteousness, however, would completely destroy the entire world.
अपरे त्वब्रुवन्नागाः समिद्धं जातवेदसम् ।
वर्षैर्निर्वापयिष्यामो मेघा भूत्वा सविद्युतः ॥२१॥
21. apare tvabruvannāgāḥ samiddhaṁ jātavedasam ,
varṣairnirvāpayiṣyāmo meghā bhūtvā savidyutaḥ.
21. apare tu abruvan nāgāḥ samiddham jātavedasam
varṣaiḥ nirvāpayiṣyāmaḥ meghāḥ bhūtvā sa-vidyutaḥ
21. But others, the Nāgas, said: "We will become clouds, complete with lightning, and extinguish the blazing fire with rains."
स्रुग्भाण्डं निशि गत्वा वा अपरे भुजगोत्तमाः ।
प्रमत्तानां हरन्त्वाशु विघ्न एवं भविष्यति ॥२२॥
22. srugbhāṇḍaṁ niśi gatvā vā apare bhujagottamāḥ ,
pramattānāṁ harantvāśu vighna evaṁ bhaviṣyati.
22. sruc-bhāṇḍam niśi gatvā vā apare bhujaga-uttamāḥ
pramattānām harantu āśu vighnaḥ evam bhaviṣyati
22. Or, let other supreme serpents go at night and quickly steal the sacrificial utensils from those who are careless. In this way, there will be an obstacle.
यज्ञे वा भुजगास्तस्मिञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
जनं दशन्तु वै सर्वमेवं त्रासो भविष्यति ॥२३॥
23. yajñe vā bhujagāstasmiñśataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
janaṁ daśantu vai sarvamevaṁ trāso bhaviṣyati.
23. yajñe vā bhujagāḥ tasmin śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
janam daśantu vai sarvam evam trāsaḥ bhaviṣyati
23. Or, in that sacrifice, let serpents, by hundreds and then by thousands, indeed bite all the people. In this way, terror will surely arise.
अथ वा संस्कृतं भोज्यं दूषयन्तु भुजंगमाः ।
स्वेन मूत्रपुरीषेण सर्वभोज्यविनाशिना ॥२४॥
24. atha vā saṁskṛtaṁ bhojyaṁ dūṣayantu bhujaṁgamāḥ ,
svena mūtrapurīṣeṇa sarvabhojyavināśinā.
24. atha vā saṁskṛtam bhojyam dūṣayantu bhujagamāḥ
svena mūtra-purīṣeṇa sarva-bhojya-vināśinā
24. Or else, let the serpents defile the prepared food with their own urine and feces, which would destroy all eatables.
अपरे त्वब्रुवंस्तत्र ऋत्विजोऽस्य भवामहे ।
यज्ञविघ्नं करिष्यामो दीयतां दक्षिणा इति ।
वश्यतां च गतोऽसौ नः करिष्यति यथेप्षितम् ॥२५॥
25. apare tvabruvaṁstatra ṛtvijo'sya bhavāmahe ,
yajñavighnaṁ kariṣyāmo dīyatāṁ dakṣiṇā iti ,
vaśyatāṁ ca gato'sau naḥ kariṣyati yathepṣitam.
25. apare tu abruvan tatra ṛtvijaḥ asya
bhavāmahe yajñavighnam kariṣyāmaḥ
dīyatām dakṣiṇā iti vaśyatām ca gataḥ
asau naḥ kariṣyati yathā īpsitam
25. Others there said, 'Let us become his priests. We will cause an obstruction to the sacrifice, and then demand the sacrificial fee.' (They believed,) 'Once he is under our control, he will do whatever we desire.'
अपरे त्वब्रुवंस्तत्र जले प्रक्रीडितं नृपम् ।
गृहमानीय बध्नीमः क्रतुरेवं भवेन्न सः ॥२६॥
26. apare tvabruvaṁstatra jale prakrīḍitaṁ nṛpam ,
gṛhamānīya badhnīmaḥ kraturevaṁ bhavenna saḥ.
26. apare tu abruvan tatra jale prakrīḍitam nṛpam
gṛham ānīya badhnīmaḥ kratuḥ evam bhavet na saḥ
26. Others there said, 'We should bring the king, who is playing in the water, to our home and bind him. In this way, his sacrifice will not take place.'
अपरे त्वब्रुवंस्तत्र नागाः सुकृतकारिणः ।
दशामैनं प्रगृह्याशु कृतमेवं भविष्यति ।
छिन्नं मूलमनर्थानां मृते तस्मिन्भविष्यति ॥२७॥
27. apare tvabruvaṁstatra nāgāḥ sukṛtakāriṇaḥ ,
daśāmainaṁ pragṛhyāśu kṛtamevaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
chinnaṁ mūlamanarthānāṁ mṛte tasminbhaviṣyati.
27. apare tu abruvan tatra nāgāḥ
sukṛtakāriṇaḥ daśāma enam pragṛhya āśu
kṛtam evam bhaviṣyati chinnam mūlam
anarthānām mṛte tasmin bhaviṣyati
27. Other Nāgas, (sarcastically called) 'performers of good deeds,' then said, 'Let us quickly seize and bite him. In this manner, it will be accomplished, and when he is dead, the root of all evils will be severed.'
एषा वै नैष्ठिकी बुद्धिः सर्वेषामेव संमता ।
यथा वा मन्यसे राजंस्तत्क्षिप्रं संविधीयताम् ॥२८॥
28. eṣā vai naiṣṭhikī buddhiḥ sarveṣāmeva saṁmatā ,
yathā vā manyase rājaṁstatkṣipraṁ saṁvidhīyatām.
28. eṣā vai naiṣṭhikī buddhiḥ sarveṣām eva saṃmatā
yathā vā manyase rājan tat kṣipram saṃvidhīyatām
28. Indeed, this is the definitive decision, agreed upon by all. Or, O King, whatever you deem fit, let that be quickly carried out.
इत्युक्त्वा समुदैक्षन्त वासुकिं पन्नगेश्वरम् ।
वासुकिश्चापि संचिन्त्य तानुवाच भुजंगमान् ॥२९॥
29. ityuktvā samudaikṣanta vāsukiṁ pannageśvaram ,
vāsukiścāpi saṁcintya tānuvāca bhujaṁgamān.
29. iti uktvā samudaikṣanta vāsukim pannageśvaram
vāsukiḥ ca api saṃcintya tān uvāca bhujaṅgamān
29. Having spoken thus, they all looked towards Vasuki, the lord of serpents. And Vasuki, after deep reflection, addressed those serpents.
नैषा वो नैष्ठिकी बुद्धिर्मता कर्तुं भुजंगमाः ।
सर्वेषामेव मे बुद्धिः पन्नगानां न रोचते ॥३०॥
30. naiṣā vo naiṣṭhikī buddhirmatā kartuṁ bhujaṁgamāḥ ,
sarveṣāmeva me buddhiḥ pannagānāṁ na rocate.
30. na eṣā vaḥ naiṣṭhikī buddhiḥ matā kartum bhujamgamāḥ
sarveṣām eva me buddhiḥ pannagānām na rocate
30. O serpents, this ultimate resolve of yours is not considered appropriate for action. Indeed, this idea of all you serpents does not please me.
किं त्वत्र संविधातव्यं भवतां यद्भवेद्धितम् ।
अनेनाहं भृशं तप्ये गुणदोषौ मदाश्रयौ ॥३१॥
31. kiṁ tvatra saṁvidhātavyaṁ bhavatāṁ yadbhaveddhitam ,
anenāhaṁ bhṛśaṁ tapye guṇadoṣau madāśrayau.
31. kim tu atra saṁvidhātavyam bhavatām yat bhavet
hitam anena aham bhṛśam tapye guṇadoṣau madāśrayau
31. However, what arrangement should be made here by you that would be beneficial? Due to this, I am greatly tormented, for both merits and faults hinge upon me.
