युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
नेह पश्यामि विबुधा राधेयममितौजसम् ।
भ्रातरौ च महात्मानौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
neha paśyāmi vibudhā rādheyamamitaujasam ,
bhrātarau ca mahātmānau yudhāmanyūttamaujasau.

1. Yudhishthira said: O gods, I do not see the son of Rādhā (Karṇa) here, who possessed immeasurable valor. Nor do I see the two magnanimous brothers, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas.
जुहुवुर्ये शरीराणि रणवह्नौ महारथाः ।
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च ये मदर्थे हता रणे ॥२॥
2. juhuvurye śarīrāṇi raṇavahnau mahārathāḥ ,
rājāno rājaputrāśca ye madarthe hatā raṇe.
2. juhuvuḥ ye śarīrāṇi raṇa-vahnau mahā-rathāḥ
rājānaḥ rāja-putrāḥ ca ye mat-arthe hatāḥ raṇe

2. Where are those great warriors who offered their bodies into the fire of battle? And where are the kings and princes who were slain in combat for my sake (karma)?
क्व ते महारथाः सर्वे शार्दूलसमविक्रमाः ।
तैरप्ययं जितो लोकः कच्चित्पुरुषसत्तमैः ॥३॥
3. kva te mahārathāḥ sarve śārdūlasamavikramāḥ ,
tairapyayaṁ jito lokaḥ kaccitpuruṣasattamaiḥ.
3. kva te mahārathāḥ sarve śārdūlasamavikramāḥ |
taiḥ api ayam jitaḥ lokaḥ kaccit puruṣasattamaiḥ
3. te sarve śārdūlasamavikramāḥ mahārathāḥ kva

3. Where are all those great chariot-warriors whose might was like that of a tiger? I hope this realm (loka) has been attained by them, those best among men.
यदि लोकानिमान्प्राप्तास्ते च सर्वे महारथाः ।
स्थितं वित्त हि मां देवाः सहितं तैर्महात्मभिः ॥४॥
4. yadi lokānimānprāptāste ca sarve mahārathāḥ ,
sthitaṁ vitta hi māṁ devāḥ sahitaṁ tairmahātmabhiḥ.
4. yadi lokān imān prāptāḥ te ca sarve mahārathāḥ | sthitam
vitta hi mām devāḥ sahitam taiḥ mahātmacertainlybhiḥ
4. devāḥ hi yadi te ca sarve mahārathāḥ imān lokān prāptāḥ
mām taiḥ mahātmacertainlybhiḥ sahitam sthitam vitta
4. O gods, if all those great chariot-warriors have indeed reached these realms (loka), then know me to be residing with those great-souled ones.
कच्चिन्न तैरवाप्तोऽयं नृपैर्लोकोऽक्षयः शुभः ।
न तैरहं विना वत्स्ये ज्ञातिभिर्भ्रातृभिस्तथा ॥५॥
5. kaccinna tairavāpto'yaṁ nṛpairloko'kṣayaḥ śubhaḥ ,
na tairahaṁ vinā vatsye jñātibhirbhrātṛbhistathā.
5. kaccit na taiḥ avāptaḥ ayam nṛpaiḥ lokaḥ akṣayaḥ śubhaḥ
| na taiḥ aham vinā vatsye jñātibhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ tathā
5. kaccit ayam akṣayaḥ śubhaḥ lokaḥ nṛpaiḥ taiḥ avāptaḥ
aham taiḥ jñātibhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ tathā vinā na vatsye
5. I trust that this imperishable, auspicious realm (loka) has been attained by those kings (nṛpa). I shall not dwell without them, my kinsmen, and also my brothers.
मातुर्हि वचनं श्रुत्वा तदा सलिलकर्मणि ।
कर्णस्य क्रियतां तोयमिति तप्यामि तेन वै ॥६॥
6. māturhi vacanaṁ śrutvā tadā salilakarmaṇi ,
karṇasya kriyatāṁ toyamiti tapyāmi tena vai.
6. mātuḥ hi vacanam śrutvā tadā salilakarmaṇi |
karṇasya kriyatām toyam iti tapyāmi tena vai
6. hi tadā mātuḥ vacanam śrutvā 'karṇasya
toyam kriyatām' iti tena vai tapyāmi
6. Indeed, having heard my mother's words then, during the water ritual (salilakarma), 'Let the water offering be made for Karṇa' - because of that, I lament.
इदं च परितप्यामि पुनः पुनरहं सुराः ।
यन्मातुः सदृशौ पादौ तस्याहममितौजसः ॥७॥
7. idaṁ ca paritapyāmi punaḥ punarahaṁ surāḥ ,
yanmātuḥ sadṛśau pādau tasyāhamamitaujasaḥ.
7. idam ca paritapyāmi punaḥ punaḥ aham surāḥ |
yat mātuḥ sadṛśau pādau tasya aham amitaujasaḥ
7. surāḥ aham idaṃ punaḥ punaḥ paritapyāmi yat
aham tasya amitaujasaḥ mātuḥ sadṛśau pādau
7. O gods, I repeatedly grieve over this: that I failed to recognize him, the one of immense strength, whose feet resembled those of my mother.
दृष्ट्वैव तं नानुगतः कर्णं परबलार्दनम् ।
न ह्यस्मान्कर्णसहिताञ्जयेच्छक्रोऽपि संयुगे ॥८॥
8. dṛṣṭvaiva taṁ nānugataḥ karṇaṁ parabalārdanam ,
na hyasmānkarṇasahitāñjayecchakro'pi saṁyuge.
8. dṛṣṭvā eva tam na anugataḥ karṇam parabalārdanam |
na hi asmān karṇasahitān jayet śakraḥ api saṃyuge
8. tam parabalārdanam karṇam dṛṣṭvā eva na anugataḥ
hi saṃyuge karṇasahitān asmān śakraḥ api na jayet
8. Having seen Karna, the destroyer of enemy forces, I did not follow him. Indeed, not even Indra himself could have conquered us in battle if he had been with us.
तमहं यत्रतत्रस्थं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि सूर्यजम् ।
अविज्ञातो मया योऽसौ घातितः सव्यसाचिना ॥९॥
9. tamahaṁ yatratatrasthaṁ draṣṭumicchāmi sūryajam ,
avijñāto mayā yo'sau ghātitaḥ savyasācinā.
9. tam aham yatra tatra stham draṣṭum icchāmi sūryajam
| avijñātaḥ mayā yaḥ asau ghātitaḥ savyasācinā
9. aham tam sūryajam yatra tatra stham draṣṭum icchāmi
yaḥ asau mayā avijñātaḥ savyasācinā ghātitaḥ
9. I wish to see the son of Sūrya (Karna) wherever he may be, for he was unknown to me and was killed by Arjuna.
भीमं च भीमविक्रान्तं प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियं मम ।
अर्जुनं चेन्द्रसंकाशं यमौ तौ च यमोपमौ ॥१०॥
10. bhīmaṁ ca bhīmavikrāntaṁ prāṇebhyo'pi priyaṁ mama ,
arjunaṁ cendrasaṁkāśaṁ yamau tau ca yamopamau.
10. bhīmam ca bhīmavikrāntam prāṇebhyaḥ api priyam mama
| arjunam ca indrasaṃkāśam yamau tau ca yamopamau
10. mama prāṇebhyaḥ api priyam bhīmavikrāntam bhīmam
ca indrasaṃkāśam arjunam ca tau yamopamau yamau ca
10. And Bhīma, of terrible valor, who is dearer to me even than life; and Arjuna, who resembles Indra; and those two twins, who are like the two Yamas.
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तां चाहं पाञ्चालीं धर्मचारिणीम् ।
न चेह स्थातुमिच्छामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वः ॥११॥
11. draṣṭumicchāmi tāṁ cāhaṁ pāñcālīṁ dharmacāriṇīm ,
na ceha sthātumicchāmi satyametadbravīmi vaḥ.
11. draṣṭum icchāmi tām ca aham pāñcālīm dharma-cāriṇīm
na ca iha sthātum icchāmi satyam etat bravīmi vaḥ
11. aham tām dharma-cāriṇīm pāñcālīm draṣṭum icchāmi
ca iha sthātum na icchāmi etat satyam vaḥ bravīmi
11. I wish to see that Pañcālī, who always adheres to righteousness (dharma). I truly do not wish to remain here; this truth I tell you.
किं मे भ्रातृविहीनस्य स्वर्गेण सुरसत्तमाः ।
यत्र ते स मम स्वर्गो नायं स्वर्गो मतो मम ॥१२॥
12. kiṁ me bhrātṛvihīnasya svargeṇa surasattamāḥ ,
yatra te sa mama svargo nāyaṁ svargo mato mama.
12. kim me bhrātṛ-vihīnasya svargena sura-sattamāḥ
yatra te sa mama svargaḥ na ayam svargaḥ mataḥ mama
12. sura-sattamāḥ bhrātṛ-vihīnasya me svargena kim
yatra te sa mama svargaḥ ayam svargaḥ mama na mataḥ
12. What use is heaven to me, deprived of my brothers, O best among the gods? Where they reside, that is my heaven; this [place] is not considered heaven by me.
देवा ऊचुः ।
यदि वै तत्र ते श्रद्धा गम्यतां पुत्र माचिरम् ।
प्रिये हि तव वर्तामो देवराजस्य शासनात् ॥१३॥
13. devā ūcuḥ ,
yadi vai tatra te śraddhā gamyatāṁ putra māciram ,
priye hi tava vartāmo devarājasya śāsanāt.
13. devāḥ ūcuḥ yadi vai tatra te śraddhā gamyatām putra
mā ciram priye hi tava vartāmaḥ deva-rājasya śāsanāt
13. devāḥ ūcuḥ yadi vai tatra te śraddhā putra mā ciram
gamyatām hi deva-rājasya śāsanāt tava priye vartāmaḥ
13. The gods said: 'If you indeed have belief (śraddhā) there, then go, son, without delay. For we act in accordance with the command of the king of gods, in what is dear to you.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा तं ततो देवा देवदूतमुपादिशन् ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य सुहृदो दर्शयेति परंतप ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā taṁ tato devā devadūtamupādiśan ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya suhṛdo darśayeti paraṁtapa.
14. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktvā tam tataḥ devāḥ deva-dūtam
upādiśan yudhiṣṭhirasya suhṛdaḥ darśaya iti paraṃtapa
14. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktvā tam tataḥ devāḥ deva-dūtam
upādiśan "paraṃtapa yudhiṣṭhirasya suhṛdaḥ darśaya" iti
14. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Having thus spoken to him, the gods then instructed a divine messenger, saying, "Show Yudhiṣṭhira's friends, O tormentor of foes."'
ततः कुन्तीसुतो राजा देवदूतश्च जग्मतुः ।
सहितौ राजशार्दूल यत्र ते पुरुषर्षभाः ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ kuntīsuto rājā devadūtaśca jagmatuḥ ,
sahitau rājaśārdūla yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ.
15. tataḥ kuntīsutaḥ rājā devadūtaḥ ca jagmatuḥ
sahitau rājaśārdūla yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ
15. tataḥ kuntīsutaḥ rājā ca devadūtaḥ sahitau
jagmatuḥ rājaśārdūla yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ
15. Then, King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, and the divine messenger proceeded together, O tiger among kings, to where those foremost among men (puruṣa) were.
अग्रतो देवदूतस्तु ययौ राजा च पृष्ठतः ।
पन्थानमशुभं दुर्गं सेवितं पापकर्मभिः ॥१६॥
16. agrato devadūtastu yayau rājā ca pṛṣṭhataḥ ,
panthānamaśubhaṁ durgaṁ sevitaṁ pāpakarmabhiḥ.
16. agrataḥ devadūtaḥ tu yayau rājā ca pṛṣṭhataḥ
panthānam aśubham durgam sevitam pāpakarmabhiḥ
16. tu devadūtaḥ agrataḥ yayau ca rājā pṛṣṭhataḥ
aśubham durgam panthānam pāpakarmabhiḥ sevitam
16. The divine messenger, however, went ahead, while the king followed behind, traversing an inauspicious and difficult path, frequented by those who committed sinful acts (karma).
तमसा संवृतं घोरं केशशैवलशाद्वलम् ।
युक्तं पापकृतां गन्धैर्मांसशोणितकर्दमम् ॥१७॥
17. tamasā saṁvṛtaṁ ghoraṁ keśaśaivalaśādvalam ,
yuktaṁ pāpakṛtāṁ gandhairmāṁsaśoṇitakardamam.
17. tamasā saṃvṛtam ghoram keśaśaivalaśādvalam
yuktam pāpakṛtām gandhaiḥ māṃsaśoṇitakardamam
17. ghoram tamasā saṃvṛtam keśaśaivalaśādvalam
pāpakṛtām gandhaiḥ yuktam māṃsaśoṇitakardamam
17. It was shrouded in ghastly darkness, with human hair and moss forming its turf. It was filled with the stench of evildoers and consisted of mud made of flesh and blood.
दंशोत्थानं सझिल्लीकं मक्षिकामशकावृतम् ।
इतश्चेतश्च कुणपैः समन्तात्परिवारितम् ॥१८॥
18. daṁśotthānaṁ sajhillīkaṁ makṣikāmaśakāvṛtam ,
itaścetaśca kuṇapaiḥ samantātparivāritam.
18. daṃśotthānam sajhīllīkam makṣikāmaśakāvṛtam
itaḥ ca itaḥ ca kuṇapaiḥ samantāt parivāritam
18. daṃśotthānam sajhīllīkam makṣikāmaśakāvṛtam
itaḥ ca itaḥ ca kuṇapaiḥ samantāt parivāritam
18. It was characterized by swarms of gnats and crickets, covered with flies and mosquitoes, and surrounded on all sides by corpses strewn here and there.
अस्थिकेशसमाकीर्णं कृमिकीटसमाकुलम् ।
ज्वलनेन प्रदीप्तेन समन्तात्परिवेष्टितम् ॥१९॥
19. asthikeśasamākīrṇaṁ kṛmikīṭasamākulam ,
jvalanena pradīptena samantātpariveṣṭitam.
19. asthikeśasamākīrṇam kṛmikīṭasamākulam
jvalanena pradīptena samantāt pariveṣṭitam
19. It was covered with bones and hair, infested with worms and insects, and completely surrounded by blazing fire.
अयोमुखैश्च काकोलैर्गृध्रैश्च समभिद्रुतम् ।
सूचीमुखैस्तथा प्रेतैर्विन्ध्यशैलोपमैर्वृतम् ॥२०॥
20. ayomukhaiśca kākolairgṛdhraiśca samabhidrutam ,
sūcīmukhaistathā pretairvindhyaśailopamairvṛtam.
20. ayomukhaiḥ ca kākolaiḥ gṛdhraiḥ ca samabhidrutam
sūcīmukhaiḥ tathā pretaiḥ vindhyaśailopamaiḥ vṛtam
20. It was assaulted by iron-beaked kākola birds and vultures, and surrounded by needle-mouthed disembodied spirits (preta) resembling the Vindhya mountains.
मेदोरुधिरयुक्तैश्च छिन्नबाहूरुपाणिभिः ।
निकृत्तोदरपादैश्च तत्र तत्र प्रवेरितैः ॥२१॥
21. medorudhirayuktaiśca chinnabāhūrupāṇibhiḥ ,
nikṛttodarapādaiśca tatra tatra praveritaiḥ.
21. medorudhirayuktaiḥ ca chinnabāhūrupāṇibhiḥ
nikṛttodarapādaiḥ ca tatra tatra praveritaiḥ
21. And by (entities) endowed with fat and blood, with severed arms, thighs, and hands; and with bellies and feet cut off, scattered here and there.
स तत्कुणपदुर्गन्धमशिवं रोमहर्षणम् ।
जगाम राजा धर्मात्मा मध्ये बहु विचिन्तयन् ॥२२॥
22. sa tatkuṇapadurgandhamaśivaṁ romaharṣaṇam ,
jagāma rājā dharmātmā madhye bahu vicintayan.
22. saḥ tat kuṇapadurghandham aśivam romaharṣaṇam
jagāma rājā dharmātmā madhye bahu vicintayan
22. That king, whose spirit was righteous (dharma), approached that inauspicious, hair-raising place, which was foul-smelling from corpses, pondering many things in its midst.
ददर्शोष्णोदकैः पूर्णां नदीं चापि सुदुर्गमाम् ।
असिपत्रवनं चैव निशितक्षुरसंवृतम् ॥२३॥
23. dadarśoṣṇodakaiḥ pūrṇāṁ nadīṁ cāpi sudurgamām ,
asipatravanaṁ caiva niśitakṣurasaṁvṛtam.
23. dadarśa uṣṇodakaiḥ pūrṇām nadīm ca api sudurgamām
asipatravanaṃ ca eva niśitakṣurasaṃvṛtam
23. (saḥ) uṣṇodakaiḥ pūrṇām sudurgamām nadīm api ca
niśitakṣurasaṃvṛtam asipatravanaṃ eva ca dadarśa
23. He saw a river filled with hot water, exceedingly difficult to traverse, and indeed, a forest of sword-leaves, covered with sharp razors.
करम्भवालुकास्तप्ता आयसीश्च शिलाः पृथक् ।
लोहकुम्भीश्च तैलस्य क्वाथ्यमानाः समन्ततः ॥२४॥
24. karambhavālukāstaptā āyasīśca śilāḥ pṛthak ,
lohakumbhīśca tailasya kvāthyamānāḥ samantataḥ.
24. karambhavālukāḥ taptāḥ āyasīḥ ca śilāḥ pṛthak
lohakumbhīḥ ca tailasya kvāthyamānāḥ samantataḥ
24. taptāḥ karambhavālukāḥ ca āyasīḥ śilāḥ pṛthak
ca samantataḥ tailasya kvāthyamānāḥ lohakumbhīḥ
24. He also saw scorching sands mixed with parched grain flour, and separate iron stones, as well as iron pots of oil boiling all around.
कूटशाल्मलिकं चापि दुस्पर्शं तीक्ष्णकण्टकम् ।
ददर्श चापि कौन्तेयो यातनाः पापकर्मिणाम् ॥२५॥
25. kūṭaśālmalikaṁ cāpi dusparśaṁ tīkṣṇakaṇṭakam ,
dadarśa cāpi kaunteyo yātanāḥ pāpakarmiṇām.
25. kūṭaśālmalikaṃ ca api duṣparśaṃ tīkṣṇakaṇṭakam
dadarśa ca api kaunteyaḥ yātanāḥ pāpakarmmiṇām
25. kaunteyaḥ duṣparśaṃ tīkṣṇakaṇṭakam kūṭaśālmalikaṃ
api ca pāpakarmmiṇām yātanāḥ api ca dadarśa
25. He also saw the Kūṭaśālmalī (silk-cotton) tree, agonizing to touch and characterized by sharp thorns. Moreover, Kunti's son (Yudhishthira) witnessed the tortures inflicted upon those who committed wicked deeds.
स तं दुर्गन्धमालक्ष्य देवदूतमुवाच ह ।
कियदध्वानमस्माभिर्गन्तव्यमिदमीदृशम् ॥२६॥
26. sa taṁ durgandhamālakṣya devadūtamuvāca ha ,
kiyadadhvānamasmābhirgantavyamidamīdṛśam.
26. saḥ taṃ durgandhaṃ ālakṣya devadūtam uvāca ha
kiyat adhvānam asmābhiḥ gantavyam idam īdṛśam
26. saḥ taṃ durgandhaṃ ālakṣya devadūtam ha uvāca
asmābhiḥ kiyat īdṛśam adhvānam idam gantavyam
26. Perceiving that foul stench, he (Yudhishthira) then spoke to the divine messenger, 'How much more of this kind of path must be traversed by us?'
क्व च ते भ्रातरो मह्यं तन्ममाख्यातुमर्हसि ।
देशोऽयं कश्च देवानामेतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥२७॥
27. kva ca te bhrātaro mahyaṁ tanmamākhyātumarhasi ,
deśo'yaṁ kaśca devānāmetadicchāmi veditum.
27. kva ca te bhrātaraḥ mahyam tat mama ākhyātum arhasi
| deśaḥ ayam ca devānām etat icchāmi veditum
27. te bhrātaraḥ kva ca mahyam tat mama ākhyātum arhasi
ayam ca deśaḥ devānām kaḥ etat veditum icchāmi
27. And where are your brothers? You should tell me that. Also, what kind of region of the gods is this? I wish to know this.
स संनिववृते श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य भाषितम् ।
देवदूतोऽब्रवीच्चैनमेतावद्गमनं तव ॥२८॥
28. sa saṁnivavṛte śrutvā dharmarājasya bhāṣitam ,
devadūto'bravīccainametāvadgamanaṁ tava.
28. sa saṃnivavṛte śrutvā dharmarājasya bhāṣitam |
devadūtaḥ abravīt ca enam etāvat gamanam tava
28. sa dharmarājasya bhāṣitam śrutvā saṃnivavṛte
devadūtaḥ ca enam abravīt tava gamanam etāvat
28. Having heard the words of the King of (dharma), he turned back. The divine messenger then said to him, 'This is the extent of your journey.'
निवर्तितव्यं हि मया तथास्म्युक्तो दिवौकसैः ।
यदि श्रान्तोऽसि राजेन्द्र त्वमथागन्तुमर्हसि ॥२९॥
29. nivartitavyaṁ hi mayā tathāsmyukto divaukasaiḥ ,
yadi śrānto'si rājendra tvamathāgantumarhasi.
29. nivartitavyam hi mayā tathā asmi uktaḥ divaukasaiḥ
| yadi śrāntaḥ asi rājendra tvam atha āgantum arhasi
29. hi mayā nivartitavyam,
tathā divaukasaiḥ uktaḥ asmi rājendra,
yadi tvam śrāntaḥ asi,
atha āgantum arhasi
29. Indeed, I must turn back, for I have been instructed thus by the celestials. If you are weary, O King of kings, then you should come (back).
युधिष्ठिरस्तु निर्विण्णस्तेन गन्धेन मूर्छितः ।
निवर्तने धृतमनाः पर्यावर्तत भारत ॥३०॥
30. yudhiṣṭhirastu nirviṇṇastena gandhena mūrchitaḥ ,
nivartane dhṛtamanāḥ paryāvartata bhārata.
30. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu nirviṇṇaḥ tena gandhena mūrcchitaḥ
| nivartane dhṛtamanāḥ paryāvartata bhārata
30. tu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ,
tena gandhena nirviṇṇaḥ mūrcchitaḥ [ca],
nivartane dhṛtamanāḥ [san],
bhārata,
paryāvartata
30. However, Yudhiṣṭhira, despondent and faint from that odor, having made up his mind to return, turned back, O Bhārata.
स संनिवृत्तो धर्मात्मा दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ।
शुश्राव तत्र वदतां दीना वाचः समन्ततः ॥३१॥
31. sa saṁnivṛtto dharmātmā duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ,
śuśrāva tatra vadatāṁ dīnā vācaḥ samantataḥ.

31. He, the one whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, returned, accompanied by sorrow and grief. There, he heard lamenting voices speaking from all directions.
भो भो धर्मज राजर्षे पुण्याभिजन पाण्डव ।
अनुग्रहार्थमस्माकं तिष्ठ तावन्मुहूर्तकम् ॥३२॥
32. bho bho dharmaja rājarṣe puṇyābhijana pāṇḍava ,
anugrahārthamasmākaṁ tiṣṭha tāvanmuhūrtakam.

32. O, O, son of Dharma (dharma), royal sage, Pāṇḍava of sacred lineage! For the sake of favoring us, please stay for a moment.
आयाति त्वयि दुर्धर्षे वाति पुण्यः समीरणः ।
तव गन्धानुगस्तात येनास्मान्सुखमागमत् ॥३३॥
33. āyāti tvayi durdharṣe vāti puṇyaḥ samīraṇaḥ ,
tava gandhānugastāta yenāsmānsukhamāgamat.
33. āyāti tvayi durdharṣe vāti puṇyaḥ samīraṇaḥ
tava gandhānugaḥ tāta yena asmān sukham āgamat
33. tāta durdharṣe tvayi āyāti tava gandhānugaḥ
puṇyaḥ samīraṇaḥ vāti yena asmān sukham āgamat
33. O dear one, as you, the formidable one, approach, a purifying wind, following your fragrance, blows. Through this, comfort has come to us.
ते वयं पार्थ दीर्घस्य कालस्य पुरुषर्षभ ।
सुखमासादयिष्यामस्त्वां दृष्ट्वा राजसत्तम ॥३४॥
34. te vayaṁ pārtha dīrghasya kālasya puruṣarṣabha ,
sukhamāsādayiṣyāmastvāṁ dṛṣṭvā rājasattama.
34. te vayam pārtha dīrghasya kālasya puruṣarṣabha
sukham āsādayiṣyāmaḥ tvām dṛṣṭvā rājasattama
34. pārtha puruṣarṣabha rājasattama te vayam tvām
dṛṣṭvā dīrghasya kālasya sukham āsādayiṣyāmaḥ
34. O Pārtha, O best among persons (puruṣa), O best among kings, having seen you, we shall achieve comfort after a long time.
संतिष्ठस्व महाबाहो मुहूर्तमपि भारत ।
त्वयि तिष्ठति कौरव्य यातनास्मान्न बाधते ॥३५॥
35. saṁtiṣṭhasva mahābāho muhūrtamapi bhārata ,
tvayi tiṣṭhati kauravya yātanāsmānna bādhate.
35. saṃtiṣṭhasva mahābāho muhūrtam api bhārata
tvayi tiṣṭhati kauravya yātanā asmān na bādhate
35. mahābāho bhārata kauravya muhūrtam api saṃtiṣṭhasva
tvayi tiṣṭhati asmān yātanā na bādhate
35. O mighty-armed one, O descendant of Bharata, O scion of Kuru, please remain for just a moment. As long as you stay, this torment will not afflict us.
एवं बहुविधा वाचः कृपणा वेदनावताम् ।
तस्मिन्देशे स शुश्राव समन्ताद्वदतां नृप ॥३६॥
36. evaṁ bahuvidhā vācaḥ kṛpaṇā vedanāvatām ,
tasmindeśe sa śuśrāva samantādvadatāṁ nṛpa.
36. evam bahuvidhāḥ vācaḥ kṛpaṇāḥ vedanāvatām
tasmin deśe saḥ śuśrāva samantāt vadatām nṛpa
36. nṛpa saḥ tasmin deśe samantāt evam bahuvidhāḥ
kṛpaṇāḥ vedanāvatām vadatām vācaḥ śuśrāva
36. O king, in that place, he heard from all sides such various pitiable words from those who were suffering and speaking.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दयावान्दीनभाषिणाम् ।
अहो कृच्छ्रमिति प्राह तस्थौ स च युधिष्ठिरः ॥३७॥
37. teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā dayāvāndīnabhāṣiṇām ,
aho kṛcchramiti prāha tasthau sa ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
37. teṣām tat vacanam śrutvā dayāvān dīnabhāṣiṇām aho
kṛcchram iti prāha tasthau saḥ ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
37. saḥ dayāvān yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ca teṣām dīnabhāṣiṇām tat
vacanam śrutvā "aho kṛcchram!" iti prāha tasthau
37. Having heard those words of theirs, of those who spoke miserably, the compassionate Yudhiṣṭhira exclaimed, 'Oh, what distress!' and he remained there.
स ता गिरः पुरस्ताद्वै श्रुतपूर्वाः पुनः पुनः ।
ग्लानानां दुःखितानां च नाभ्यजानत पाण्डवः ॥३८॥
38. sa tā giraḥ purastādvai śrutapūrvāḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
glānānāṁ duḥkhitānāṁ ca nābhyajānata pāṇḍavaḥ.
38. saḥ tāḥ giraḥ purastāt vai śrutapūrvāḥ punaḥ punaḥ
glānānām duḥkhitānām ca na abhyajānata pāṇḍavaḥ
38. saḥ pāṇḍavaḥ purastāt punaḥ punaḥ śrutapūrvāḥ tāḥ
glānānām duḥkhitānām ca giraḥ vai na abhyajānata
38. The son of Pāṇḍu did not recognize those words, which he had certainly heard repeatedly before, from those who were exhausted and suffering.
अबुध्यमानस्ता वाचो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उवाच के भवन्तो वै किमर्थमिह तिष्ठथ ॥३९॥
39. abudhyamānastā vāco dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
uvāca ke bhavanto vai kimarthamiha tiṣṭhatha.
39. abudhyamānaḥ tāḥ vācaḥ dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
uvāca ke bhavantaḥ vai kim artham iha tiṣṭhatha
39. dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tāḥ vācaḥ abudhyamānaḥ
uvāca bhavantaḥ ke vai kim artham iha tiṣṭhatha
39. Uncomprehending those voices, Yudhishthira, the son of (dharma), asked, "Who are you all, and for what purpose are you standing here?"
इत्युक्तास्ते ततः सर्वे समन्तादवभाषिरे ।
कर्णोऽहं भीमसेनोऽहमर्जुनोऽहमिति प्रभो ॥४०॥
40. ityuktāste tataḥ sarve samantādavabhāṣire ,
karṇo'haṁ bhīmaseno'hamarjuno'hamiti prabho.
40. iti uktāḥ te tataḥ sarve samantāt avabhāṣire karṇaḥ
aham bhīmasenaḥ aham arjunaḥ aham iti prabho
40. iti uktāḥ te sarve tataḥ samantāt avabhāṣire prabho
karṇaḥ aham bhīmasenaḥ aham arjunaḥ aham iti
40. When thus addressed, all of them then spoke from all sides, saying, "I am Karna," "I am Bhimasena," "I am Arjuna," O Lord.
नकुलः सहदेवोऽहं धृष्टद्युम्नोऽहमित्युत ।
द्रौपदी द्रौपदेयाश्च इत्येवं ते विचुक्रुशुः ॥४१॥
41. nakulaḥ sahadevo'haṁ dhṛṣṭadyumno'hamityuta ,
draupadī draupadeyāśca ityevaṁ te vicukruśuḥ.
41. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ aham dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ aham iti uta
draupadī draupadeyāḥ ca iti evam te vicukruśuḥ
41. nakulaḥ aham sahadevaḥ aham dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ aham
iti uta draupadī ca draupadeyāḥ evam te vicukruśuḥ
41. "I am Nakula," "I am Sahadeva," "I am Dhrishtadyumna!" And moreover, Draupadi and the sons of Draupadi - in this manner, they all cried out.
ता वाचः स तदा श्रुत्वा तद्देशसदृशीर्नृप ।
ततो विममृशे राजा किं न्विदं दैवकारितम् ॥४२॥
42. tā vācaḥ sa tadā śrutvā taddeśasadṛśīrnṛpa ,
tato vimamṛśe rājā kiṁ nvidaṁ daivakāritam.
42. tāḥ vācaḥ saḥ tadā śrutvā tat deśa sadṛśīḥ nṛpa
tataḥ vimamṛśe rājā kim nu idam daivakāritam
42. nṛpa saḥ rājā tadā tat deśa sadṛśīḥ tāḥ vācaḥ
śrutvā tataḥ vimamṛśe kim nu idam daivakāritam
42. O King, having then heard those voices, which were appropriate to that place, the king then pondered, "What indeed is this, brought about by divine will?"
किं नु तत्कलुषं कर्म कृतमेभिर्महात्मभिः ।
कर्णेन द्रौपदेयैर्वा पाञ्चाल्या वा सुमध्यया ॥४३॥
43. kiṁ nu tatkaluṣaṁ karma kṛtamebhirmahātmabhiḥ ,
karṇena draupadeyairvā pāñcālyā vā sumadhyayā.
43. kim nu tat kaluṣam karma kṛtam ebhiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
karṇena draupadeyaiḥ vā pāñcālyā vā sumadhyayā
43. kim nu tat kaluṣam karma kṛtam ebhiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
karṇena draupadeyaiḥ vā pāñcālyā vā sumadhyayā
43. What sinful act (karma), then, was committed by these great souls - by Karṇa, or by the sons of Draupadī, or by the slender-waisted Pāñcālī (Draupadī)?
य इमे पापगन्धेऽस्मिन्देशे सन्ति सुदारुणे ।
न हि जानामि सर्वेषां दुष्कृतं पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥४४॥
44. ya ime pāpagandhe'smindeśe santi sudāruṇe ,
na hi jānāmi sarveṣāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ puṇyakarmaṇām.
44. ye ime pāpagandhe asmin deśe santi sudāruṇe
na hi jānāmi sarveṣām duṣkṛtam puṇyakarmaṇām
44. ye ime asmin pāpagandhe sudāruṇe deśe santi
na hi jānāmi sarveṣām puṇyakarmaṇām duṣkṛtam
44. What is this extremely cruel land, permeated by sin, where these people are present? Indeed, I do not know the evil deed (karma) of all those whose actions are meritorious.
किं कृत्वा धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो राजा सुयोधनः ।
तथा श्रिया युतः पापः सह सर्वैः पदानुगैः ॥४५॥
45. kiṁ kṛtvā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putro rājā suyodhanaḥ ,
tathā śriyā yutaḥ pāpaḥ saha sarvaiḥ padānugaiḥ.
45. kim kṛtvā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ rājā suyodhanaḥ
tathā śriyā yutaḥ pāpaḥ saha sarvaiḥ padānugaiḥ
45. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ rājā suyodhanaḥ pāpaḥ kim
kṛtvā tathā śriyā yutaḥ saha sarvaiḥ padānugaiḥ
45. Having done what (karma), is Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, King Suyodhana, that wicked man, thus endowed with prosperity along with all his followers?
महेन्द्र इव लक्ष्मीवानास्ते परमपूजितः ।
कस्येदानीं विकारोऽयं यदिमे नरकं गताः ॥४६॥
46. mahendra iva lakṣmīvānāste paramapūjitaḥ ,
kasyedānīṁ vikāro'yaṁ yadime narakaṁ gatāḥ.
46. mahendraḥ iva lakṣmīvān āste paramapūjitaḥ
kasya idānīm vikāraḥ ayam yadi ime narakam gatāḥ
46. mahendraḥ iva lakṣmīvān paramapūjitaḥ āste
kasya idānīm ayam vikāraḥ yadi ime narakam gatāḥ
46. He (Suyodhana) remains prosperous and highly honored, just like Mahendra. But whose misfortune (karma) is this now, if these others have gone to hell?
सर्वधर्मविदः शूराः सत्यागमपरायणाः ।
क्षात्रधर्मपराः प्राज्ञा यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः ॥४७॥
47. sarvadharmavidaḥ śūrāḥ satyāgamaparāyaṇāḥ ,
kṣātradharmaparāḥ prājñā yajvāno bhūridakṣiṇāḥ.
47. sarvadharma_vidaḥ śūrāḥ satyāgamaparāyaṇāḥ
kṣātradharma_parāḥ prājñāḥ yajvānaḥ bhūridakṣiṇāḥ
47. They are knowers of all aspects of natural law (dharma), brave, devoted to truth and sacred texts, dedicated to the warrior's constitution (dharma), wise, performers of Vedic rituals (yajña), and givers of abundant donations.
किं नु सुप्तोऽस्मि जागर्मि चेतयानो न चेतये ।
अहो चित्तविकारोऽयं स्याद्वा मे चित्तविभ्रमः ॥४८॥
48. kiṁ nu supto'smi jāgarmi cetayāno na cetaye ,
aho cittavikāro'yaṁ syādvā me cittavibhramaḥ.
48. kim nu suptaḥ asmi jāgarmi cetayānaḥ na cetaye
aho cittavikāraḥ ayam syāt vā me cittavibhramaḥ
48. Am I asleep or am I awake? Though conscious, I do not understand. Oh, is this a mental disturbance, or perhaps a delusion of my mind (citta)?
एवं बहुविधं राजा विममर्श युधिष्ठिरः ।
दुःखशोकसमाविष्टश्चिन्ताव्याकुलितेन्द्रियः ॥४९॥
49. evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ rājā vimamarśa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭaścintāvyākulitendriyaḥ.
49. evam bahuvidham rājā vimamarśa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭaḥ cintāvyākulitendriyaḥ
49. Thus, King Yudhishthira pondered deeply in many ways, overcome by sorrow and grief, his senses agitated by worry.
क्रोधमाहारयच्चैव तीव्रं धर्मसुतो नृपः ।
देवांश्च गर्हयामास धर्मं चैव युधिष्ठिरः ॥५०॥
50. krodhamāhārayaccaiva tīvraṁ dharmasuto nṛpaḥ ,
devāṁśca garhayāmāsa dharmaṁ caiva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
50. krodham āhārayat ca eva tīvram dharmasutaḥ nṛpaḥ
devān ca garhayāmāsa dharmam ca eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
50. And the king, son of Dharma (dharma), Yudhishthira, also manifested intense anger. He blamed both the gods and (natural) law (dharma).
स तीव्रगन्धसंतप्तो देवदूतमुवाच ह ।
गम्यतां भद्र येषां त्वं दूतस्तेषामुपान्तिकम् ॥५१॥
51. sa tīvragandhasaṁtapto devadūtamuvāca ha ,
gamyatāṁ bhadra yeṣāṁ tvaṁ dūtasteṣāmupāntikam.
51. sa tīvragandhasantaptaḥ devadūtam uvāca ha
gamyatām bhadra yeṣām tvam dūtaḥ teṣām upāntikam
51. sa tīvragandhasantaptaḥ devadūtam ha uvāca
bhadra yeṣām tvam dūtaḥ teṣām upāntikam gamyatām
51. Tormented by the pungent odor, he spoke to the divine messenger: "Go, O good one, to those whose messenger you are, go near them."
न ह्यहं तत्र यास्यामि स्थितोऽस्मीति निवेद्यताम् ।
मत्संश्रयादिमे दूत सुखिनो भ्रातरो हि मे ॥५२॥
52. na hyahaṁ tatra yāsyāmi sthito'smīti nivedyatām ,
matsaṁśrayādime dūta sukhino bhrātaro hi me.
52. na hi aham tatra yāsyāmi sthitaḥ asmi iti nivedyatām
matsaṃśrayāt ime dūta sukhinaḥ bhrātaraḥ hi me
52. hi aham tatra na yāsyāmi sthitaḥ asmi iti nivedyatām
dūta me ime bhrātaraḥ matsaṃśrayāt hi sukhinaḥ
52. "Indeed, I will not go there; let it be reported that I am staying here. O messenger, these brothers of mine are truly happy because they depend on me."
इत्युक्तः स तदा दूतः पाण्डुपुत्रेण धीमता ।
जगाम तत्र यत्रास्ते देवराजः शतक्रतुः ॥५३॥
53. ityuktaḥ sa tadā dūtaḥ pāṇḍuputreṇa dhīmatā ,
jagāma tatra yatrāste devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ.
53. iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā dūtaḥ pāṇḍuputreṇa dhīmatā
jagāma tatra yatra āste devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ
53. iti dhīmatā pāṇḍuputreṇa uktaḥ saḥ dūtaḥ tadā
tatra jagāma yatra devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ āste
53. Thus addressed by the intelligent son of Pāṇḍu, the messenger then went to where the king of the gods, Śatakratu, was dwelling.
निवेदयामास च तद्धर्मराजचिकीर्षितम् ।
यथोक्तं धर्मपुत्रेण सर्वमेव जनाधिप ॥५४॥
54. nivedayāmāsa ca taddharmarājacikīrṣitam ,
yathoktaṁ dharmaputreṇa sarvameva janādhipa.
54. nivedayāmāsa ca tat dharmarājacikīrṣitam
yathā uktam dharmaputreṇa sarvam eva janādhipa
54. ca janādhipa dharmaputreṇa yathā uktam tat
sarvam eva dharmarājacikīrṣitam nivedayāmāsa
54. And he reported Dharmarāja's intention, everything as stated by the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), O ruler of men.
