ततो दुःशासनः क्रुद्धः सहदेवमुपाद्रवत् ।
रथवेगेन तीव्रेण कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम् ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: Then, enraged, Duḥśāsana rushed towards Sahadeva with fierce chariot-speed, as if making the earth tremble.
तस्यापतत एवाशु भल्लेनामित्रकर्शनः ।
माद्रीसुतः शिरो यन्तुः सशिरस्त्राणमच्छिनत् ॥२॥
2. tasyāpatata evāśu bhallenāmitrakarśanaḥ ,
mādrīsutaḥ śiro yantuḥ saśirastrāṇamacchinat.
2. tasya āpatataḥ eva āśu bhallena amitrakarśanaḥ
mādrīsutaḥ śiraḥ yantuḥ saśirastrāṇam acchinat

2. As he (Duḥśāsana) was just attacking, Mādrī's son (Sahadeva), the tormentor of foes, quickly cut off the charioteer's head along with its helmet with an arrow.
नैनं दुःशासनः सूतं नापि कश्चन सैनिकः ।
हृतोत्तमाङ्गमाशुत्वात्सहदेवेन बुद्धवान् ॥३॥
3. nainaṁ duḥśāsanaḥ sūtaṁ nāpi kaścana sainikaḥ ,
hṛtottamāṅgamāśutvātsahadevena buddhavān.
3. na enam duḥśāsanaḥ sūtam na api kaścana sainikaḥ
hṛta-uttama-aṅgam āśutvāt sahadevena buddhāvān
3. āśutvāt sahadevena hṛta-uttama-aṅgam enam sūtam

3. Due to the swiftness of the action, neither Duḥśāsana nor any soldier perceived that the charioteer, whose head had been severed by Sahadeva, was dead.
यदा त्वसंगृहीतत्वात्प्रयान्त्यश्वा यथासुखम् ।
ततो दुःशासनः सूतं बुद्धवान्गतचेतसम् ॥४॥
4. yadā tvasaṁgṛhītatvātprayāntyaśvā yathāsukham ,
tato duḥśāsanaḥ sūtaṁ buddhavāngatacetasam.
4. yadā tu asaṃgṛhītatvāt prayānti aśvāḥ yathāsukham
tataḥ duḥśāsanaḥ sūtam buddhāvān gatacetasam
4. yadā tu asaṃgṛhītatvāt aśvāḥ yathāsukham prayānti
tataḥ duḥśāsanaḥ gatacetasam sūtam buddhāvān
4. However, when the horses began to move at will, being uncontrolled, then Duḥśāsana realized that the charioteer had lost consciousness.
स हयान्संनिगृह्याजौ स्वयं हयविशारदः ।
युयुधे रथिनां श्रेष्ठश्चित्रं लघु च सुष्ठु च ॥५॥
5. sa hayānsaṁnigṛhyājau svayaṁ hayaviśāradaḥ ,
yuyudhe rathināṁ śreṣṭhaścitraṁ laghu ca suṣṭhu ca.
5. saḥ hayān saṃnigṛhya ājau svayam hayaviśāradaḥ
yuyudhe rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ citram laghu ca suṣṭhu ca
5. saḥ hayaviśāradaḥ rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ svayam ājau
hayān saṃnigṛhya citram laghu ca suṣṭhu ca yuyudhe
5. That best of charioteers, himself skilled with horses, having firmly restrained the horses in battle, fought wonderfully, swiftly, and very skillfully.
तदस्यापूजयन्कर्म स्वे परे चैव संयुगे ।
हतसूतरथेनाजौ व्यचरद्यदभीतवत् ॥६॥
6. tadasyāpūjayankarma sve pare caiva saṁyuge ,
hatasūtarathenājau vyacaradyadabhītavat.
6. tat asya apūjayan karma sve pare ca eva saṃyuge
hatasūtarathena ājau vyacarat yat abhītavat
6. sve pare ca eva saṃyuge asya yat hatasūtarathena
ājau abhītavat vyacarat tat karma apūjayan
6. Both his own people and his enemies in battle praised that deed of his, that he moved about fearlessly in the fray with a chariot whose charioteer had been slain.
सहदेवस्तु तानश्वांस्तीक्ष्णैर्बाणैरवाकिरत् ।
पीड्यमानाः शरैश्चाशु प्राद्रवंस्ते ततस्ततः ॥७॥
7. sahadevastu tānaśvāṁstīkṣṇairbāṇairavākirat ,
pīḍyamānāḥ śaraiścāśu prādravaṁste tatastataḥ.
7. sahadevaḥ tu tān aśvān tīkṣṇaiḥ bāṇaiḥ avākirat
pīḍyamānāḥ śaraiḥ ca āśu prādravan te tataḥ tataḥ
7. sahadevaḥ tu tān aśvān tīkṣṇaiḥ bāṇaiḥ avākirat
śaraiḥ pīḍyamānāḥ te ca āśu tataḥ tataḥ prādravan
7. Sahadeva showered those horses with sharp arrows. Tormented by the arrows, they quickly fled in various directions.
स रश्मिषु विषक्तत्वादुत्ससर्ज शरासनम् ।
धनुषा कर्म कुर्वंस्तु रश्मीन्स पुनरुत्सृजत् ॥८॥
8. sa raśmiṣu viṣaktatvādutsasarja śarāsanam ,
dhanuṣā karma kurvaṁstu raśmīnsa punarutsṛjat.
8. saḥ raśmiṣu viṣaktatvāt utsasarja śarāsanam
dhanuṣā karma kurvan tu raśmīn saḥ punaḥ utsṛjat
8. saḥ raśmiṣu viṣaktatvāt śarāsanam utsasarja tu

8. He, due to being entangled in the reins, dropped his bow. But while performing an action (karma) with the bow, he again released the reins.
छिद्रेषु तेषु तं बाणैर्माद्रीपुत्रोऽभ्यवाकिरत् ।
परीप्संस्त्वत्सुतं कर्णस्तदन्तरमवापतत् ॥९॥
9. chidreṣu teṣu taṁ bāṇairmādrīputro'bhyavākirat ,
parīpsaṁstvatsutaṁ karṇastadantaramavāpatat.
9. chidreṣu teṣu tam bāṇaiḥ mādrīputraḥ abhyavākirat
parīpsan tvatsutam karṇaḥ tat antaram avāpatat
9. mādrīputraḥ teṣu chidreṣu tam bāṇaiḥ abhyavākirat

9. In those vulnerable moments, Sahadeva (the son of Madri) showered him (Karna) with arrows. Karna, seeking to protect your son (Duryodhana's son), seized that opportunity.
वृकोदरस्ततः कर्णं त्रिभिर्भल्लैः समाहितैः ।
आकर्णपूर्णैरभ्यघ्नन्बाह्वोरुरसि चानदत् ॥१०॥
10. vṛkodarastataḥ karṇaṁ tribhirbhallaiḥ samāhitaiḥ ,
ākarṇapūrṇairabhyaghnanbāhvorurasi cānadat.
10. vṛkodaraḥ tataḥ karṇam tribhiḥ bhallaiḥ samāhitaiḥ
ākarṇapūrṇaiḥ abhyaghanat bāhvoḥ urasi ca anadat
10. tataḥ vṛkodaraḥ karṇam tribhiḥ samāhitaiḥ ākarṇapūrṇaiḥ
bhallaiḥ bāhvoḥ urasi ca abhyaghanat anadat
10. Then Vṛkodara (Bhima) struck Karna with three well-aimed arrows, drawn back to the ear, on his arms and on his chest, and he roared.
संन्यवर्तत तं कर्णः संघट्टित इवोरगः ।
तदभूत्तुमुलं युद्धं भीमराधेययोस्तदा ॥११॥
11. saṁnyavartata taṁ karṇaḥ saṁghaṭṭita ivoragaḥ ,
tadabhūttumulaṁ yuddhaṁ bhīmarādheyayostadā.
11. sannyavartata tam karṇaḥ saṃghaṭṭitaḥ iva uragaḥ
tat abhūt tumulam yuddham bhīmarādheyayoḥ tadā
11. tadā karṇaḥ tam saṃghaṭṭitaḥ uragaḥ iva sannyavartata.
tat bhīmarādheyayoḥ tumulam yuddham abhūt.
11. Then Karṇa turned back towards him, like a provoked serpent. A fierce battle then ensued between Bhīma and Rādhīya (Karṇa).
तौ वृषाविव संक्रुद्धौ विवृत्तनयनावुभौ ।
वेगेन महतान्योन्यं संरब्धावभिपेततुः ॥१२॥
12. tau vṛṣāviva saṁkruddhau vivṛttanayanāvubhau ,
vegena mahatānyonyaṁ saṁrabdhāvabhipetatuḥ.
12. tau vṛṣau iva saṃkruddhau vivṛttanayanau ubhau
vegena mahatā anyonyam saṃrabdhau abhipetatuḥ
12. tau ubhau saṃkruddhau vivṛttanayanau saṃrabdhau vṛṣau iva mahatā vegena anyonyam abhipetatuḥ.
12. Both of them, greatly enraged, with rolling eyes and full of fury, rushed towards each other with great speed, like two bulls.
अभिसंश्लिष्टयोस्तत्र तयोराहवशौण्डयोः ।
अभिन्नशरपातत्वाद्गदायुद्धमवर्तत ॥१३॥
13. abhisaṁśliṣṭayostatra tayorāhavaśauṇḍayoḥ ,
abhinnaśarapātatvādgadāyuddhamavartata.
13. abhisaṃśliṣṭayoḥ tatra tayoḥ āhavaśauṇḍayoḥ
abhinnaśarapātatvāt gadāyuddham avartata
13. tatra abhisaṃśliṣṭayoḥ āhavaśauṇḍayoḥ tayoḥ abhinnaśarapātatvāt gadāyuddham avartata.
13. When those two warriors, eager for battle, were locked in close combat there, a mace fight ensued because arrow attacks became ineffective.
गदया भीमसेनस्तु कर्णस्य रथकूबरम् ।
बिभेदाशु तदा राजंस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१४॥
14. gadayā bhīmasenastu karṇasya rathakūbaram ,
bibhedāśu tadā rājaṁstadadbhutamivābhavat.
14. gadayā bhīmasenaḥ tu karṇasya rathakūbaram
bibheda āśu tadā rājan tat adbhutam iva abhavat
14. rājan,
tadā bhīmasenaḥ tu gadayā karṇasya rathakūbaram āśu bibheda.
tat adbhutam iva abhavat.
14. O King, then Bhīmasena quickly shattered the pole of Karṇa's chariot with his mace. That was as if a wondrous sight.
ततो भीमस्य राधेयो गदामादाय वीर्यवान् ।
अवासृजद्रथे तां तु बिभेद गदया गदाम् ॥१५॥
15. tato bhīmasya rādheyo gadāmādāya vīryavān ,
avāsṛjadrathe tāṁ tu bibheda gadayā gadām.
15. tataḥ bhīmasya rādheyaḥ gadām ādāya vīryavān
avāsṛjat rathe tām tu bibheda gadayā gadām
15. tataḥ vīryavān rādheyaḥ gadām ādāya tām rathe avāsṛjat; tu gadayā bhīmasya gadām bibheda.
15. Then, the valorous son of Radha, taking up his mace, hurled it. He struck Bhima's mace on the chariot, shattering it with his own mace.
ततो भीमः पुनर्गुर्वीं चिक्षेपाधिरथेर्गदाम् ।
तां शरैर्दशभिः कर्णः सुपुङ्खैः सुसमाहितैः ।
प्रत्यविध्यत्पुनश्चान्यैः सा भीमं पुनराव्रजत् ॥१६॥
16. tato bhīmaḥ punargurvīṁ cikṣepādhirathergadām ,
tāṁ śarairdaśabhiḥ karṇaḥ supuṅkhaiḥ susamāhitaiḥ ,
pratyavidhyatpunaścānyaiḥ sā bhīmaṁ punarāvrajat.
16. tataḥ bhīmaḥ punar gurvīm cikṣepa
adhiratheḥ gadām tām śaraiḥ daśabhiḥ karṇaḥ
supuṅkhaiḥ susamāhitaiḥ pratyavidhyat
punar ca anyaiḥ sā bhīmam punar āvrajet
16. tataḥ bhīmaḥ punar gurvīm gadām adhiratheḥ cikṣepa.
karṇaḥ tām daśabhiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ susamāhitaiḥ śaraiḥ pratyavidhyat ca punar anyaiḥ; sā (gadā) punar bhīmam āvrajet.
16. Then Bhima, in turn, hurled a heavy mace again at Karna, the son of Adhiratha. Karna struck that mace with ten well-feathered and perfectly aimed arrows, and then again he pierced it with other arrows. Yet, that (mace) returned to Bhima.
तस्याः प्रतिनिपातेन भीमस्य विपुलो ध्वजः ।
पपात सारथिश्चास्य मुमोह गदया हतः ॥१७॥
17. tasyāḥ pratinipātena bhīmasya vipulo dhvajaḥ ,
papāta sārathiścāsya mumoha gadayā hataḥ.
17. tasyāḥ pratinipātena bhīmasya vipulaḥ dhvajaḥ
papāta sārathiḥ ca asya mumoha gadayā hataḥ
17. tasyāḥ pratinipātena bhīmasya vipulaḥ dhvajaḥ papāta.
ca asya sārathiḥ gadayā hataḥ (san) mumoha.
17. Due to the recoil of that mace, Bhima's great banner fell down. And his charioteer, struck by the mace, became unconscious.
स कर्णे सायकानष्टौ व्यसृजत्क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
ध्वजे शरासने चैव शरावापे च भारत ॥१८॥
18. sa karṇe sāyakānaṣṭau vyasṛjatkrodhamūrchitaḥ ,
dhvaje śarāsane caiva śarāvāpe ca bhārata.
18. saḥ karṇe sāyakān aṣṭau vyasṛjat krodhamūrchitaḥ
dhvaje śarāsane ca eva śarāvāpe ca bhārata
18. saḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ aṣṭau sāyakān karṇe vyasṛjat: (te ca) dhvaje ca śarāsane ca eva śarāvāpe (vyasṛjyanta),
bhārata.
18. Overwhelmed with rage, Bhima discharged eight arrows at Karna: at his banner, at his bow, and indeed at his quiver, O descendant of Bharata.
ततः पुनस्तु राधेयो हयानस्य रथेषुभिः ।
ऋष्यवर्णाञ्जघानाशु तथोभौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ punastu rādheyo hayānasya ratheṣubhiḥ ,
ṛṣyavarṇāñjaghānāśu tathobhau pārṣṇisārathī.
19. tataḥ punaḥ tu rādheyaḥ hayān asya ratheṣubhiḥ
ṛṣyavarṇān jaghāna āśu tathā ubhau pārṣṇisārathī
19. tataḥ punaḥ tu rādheyaḥ asya ṛṣyavarṇān hayān ratheṣubhiḥ
āśu jaghāna tathā ubhau pārṣṇisārathī (jaghāna)
19. Then again, Karna (rādheya) quickly struck down the deer-colored horses of that chariot with his arrows, and similarly both the charioteer and the protector-from-the-rear.
स विपन्नरथो भीमो नकुलस्याप्लुतो रथम् ।
हरिर्यथा गिरेः शृङ्गं समाक्रामदरिंदमः ॥२०॥
20. sa vipannaratho bhīmo nakulasyāpluto ratham ,
hariryathā gireḥ śṛṅgaṁ samākrāmadariṁdamaḥ.
20. saḥ vipannarathaḥ bhīmaḥ nakulasya āplutaḥ ratham
hariḥ yathā gireḥ śṛṅgam samākrāmat arindamaḥ
20. saḥ vipannarathaḥ bhīmaḥ nakulasya ratham āplutaḥ
yathā arindamaḥ hariḥ gireḥ śṛṅgam samākrāmat
20. Bhima, whose chariot had been destroyed, leaped onto Nakula's chariot, just as a lion (hari), the subduer of enemies (arindama), ascends a mountain peak.
तथा द्रोणार्जुनौ चित्रमयुध्येतां महारथौ ।
आचार्यशिष्यौ राजेन्द्र कृतप्रहरणौ युधि ॥२१॥
21. tathā droṇārjunau citramayudhyetāṁ mahārathau ,
ācāryaśiṣyau rājendra kṛtapraharaṇau yudhi.
21. tathā droṇārjunau citram ayudhyetām mahārathau
ācāryaśiṣyau rājendra kṛtapraharaṇau yudhi
21. rājendra tathā ācāryaśiṣyau mahārathau
droṇārjunau kṛtapraharaṇau yudhi citram ayudhyetām
21. O king of kings (rājendra)! Thus, Drona and Arjuna, the guru (ācārya) and disciple, two great chariot-fighters (mahāratha), astonishingly fought in battle, having expertly wielded their weapons.
लघुसंधानयोगाभ्यां रथयोश्च रणेन च ।
मोहयन्तौ मनुष्याणां चक्षूंषि च मनांसि च ॥२२॥
22. laghusaṁdhānayogābhyāṁ rathayośca raṇena ca ,
mohayantau manuṣyāṇāṁ cakṣūṁṣi ca manāṁsi ca.
22. laghusaṃdhānayogābhyām rathayoḥ ca raṇena ca
mohayantau manuṣyāṇām cakṣūṃṣi ca manāṃsi ca
22. rathayoḥ ca raṇena ca laghusaṃdhānayogābhyām
manuṣyāṇām cakṣūṃṣi ca manāṃsi ca mohayantau
22. And by means of their swift aiming (laghusaṃdhāna) and excellent skill (yoga) with their chariots and in combat, they were bewildering the eyes and minds of all human beings.
उपारमन्त ते सर्वे योधास्माकं परे तथा ।
अदृष्टपूर्वं पश्यन्तस्तद्युद्धं गुरुशिष्ययोः ॥२३॥
23. upāramanta te sarve yodhāsmākaṁ pare tathā ,
adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ paśyantastadyuddhaṁ guruśiṣyayoḥ.
23. upāramanta te sarve yodhāḥ asmākam pare tathā
adṛṣṭapūrvam paśyantaḥ tat yuddham guruśiṣyayoḥ
23. te sarve asmākam pare tathā yodhāḥ guruśiṣyayoḥ
tat adṛṣṭapūrvam yuddham paśyantaḥ upāramanta
23. All of them stopped – both our warriors and those of the enemy – as they watched that unprecedented battle between the guru and the disciple.
विचित्रान्पृतनामध्ये रथमार्गानुदीर्यतः ।
अन्योन्यमपसव्यं च कर्तुं वीरौ तदैषतुः ।
पराक्रमं तयोर्योधा ददृशुस्तं सुविस्मिताः ॥२४॥
24. vicitrānpṛtanāmadhye rathamārgānudīryataḥ ,
anyonyamapasavyaṁ ca kartuṁ vīrau tadaiṣatuḥ ,
parākramaṁ tayoryodhā dadṛśustaṁ suvismitāḥ.
24. vicitrān pṛtanāmadhye rathamārgān
udīryataḥ anyonyam apasavyam ca
kartum vīrau tadā aiṣatuḥ parākramam
tayoḥ yodhāḥ dadṛśuḥ tam su-vismitāḥ

apasavyam vicitrān rathamārgān
udīryataḥ ca kartum aiṣatuḥ su-vismitāḥ
yodhāḥ tayoḥ tam parākramam dadṛśuḥ
24. Then, the two heroes desired to trace wondrous paths for their chariots amidst the armies, moving around each other to the left. The warriors, greatly astonished, witnessed their prowess.
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं द्रोणपाण्डवयोर्महत् ।
आमिषार्थं महाराज गगने श्येनयोरिव ॥२५॥
25. tayoḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ droṇapāṇḍavayormahat ,
āmiṣārthaṁ mahārāja gagane śyenayoriva.
25. tayoḥ samabhavat yuddham droṇapāṇḍavayoḥ
mahat āmiṣārtham mahārāja gagane śyenayoḥ iva
25. mahārāja tayoḥ droṇapāṇḍavayoḥ mahat yuddham
samabhavat āmiṣārtham gagane śyenayoḥ iva
25. O great king, a magnificent battle took place between those two, Drona and the son of Pandu, resembling that of two hawks in the sky contending for a piece of flesh.
यद्यच्चकार द्रोणस्तु कुन्तीपुत्रजिगीषया ।
तत्तत्प्रतिजघानाशु प्रहसंस्तस्य पाण्डवः ॥२६॥
26. yadyaccakāra droṇastu kuntīputrajigīṣayā ,
tattatpratijaghānāśu prahasaṁstasya pāṇḍavaḥ.
26. yat yat ca cakāra droṇaḥ tu kuntīputrajigīṣayā
tat tat pratijaghāna āśu prahasan tasya pāṇḍavaḥ
26. droṇaḥ tu kuntīputrajigīṣayā yat yat ca cakāra
pāṇḍavaḥ tasya tat tat āśu prahasan pratijaghāna
26. Whatever Drona did with the intention of defeating Kunti's son, that Pandu's son promptly countered, all while smiling.
यदा द्रोणो न शक्नोति पाण्डवस्य विशेषणे ।
ततः प्रादुश्चकारास्त्रमस्त्रमार्गविशारदः ॥२७॥
27. yadā droṇo na śaknoti pāṇḍavasya viśeṣaṇe ,
tataḥ prāduścakārāstramastramārgaviśāradaḥ.
27. yadā droṇaḥ na śaknoti pāṇḍavasya viśeṣaṇe
tataḥ prāduḥ cakāra astram astramārgaviśāradaḥ
27. yadā droṇaḥ pāṇḍavasya viśeṣaṇe na śaknoti
tataḥ astramārgaviśāradaḥ astram prāduḥ cakāra
27. When Drona was unable to overcome the Pandava (Arjuna), then that master of weapon-craft manifested a weapon.
ऐन्द्रं पाशुपतं त्वाष्ट्रं वायव्यमथ वारुणम् ।
मुक्तं मुक्तं द्रोणचापात्तज्जघान धनंजयः ॥२८॥
28. aindraṁ pāśupataṁ tvāṣṭraṁ vāyavyamatha vāruṇam ,
muktaṁ muktaṁ droṇacāpāttajjaghāna dhanaṁjayaḥ.
28. aindram pāśupatam tvāṣṭram vāyavyam atha vāruṇam
muktam muktam droṇacāpāt tat jaghāna dhanaṃjayaḥ
28. dhanaṃjayaḥ droṇacāpāt aindram pāśupatam tvāṣṭram
vāyavyam atha vāruṇam muktam muktam tat jaghāna
28. Dhananjaya (Arjuna) destroyed each weapon—Indra's, the Pāśupata, Tvaṣṭā's, Vāyu's, and Varuṇa's—as it was released from Drona's bow.
अस्त्राण्यस्त्रैर्यदा तस्य विधिवद्धन्ति पाण्डवः ।
ततोऽस्त्रैः परमैर्दिव्यैर्द्रोणः पार्थमवाकिरत् ॥२९॥
29. astrāṇyastrairyadā tasya vidhivaddhanti pāṇḍavaḥ ,

29. astrāṇi astraiḥ yadā tasya vidhivat hanti pāṇḍavaḥ
tataḥ astraiḥ paramaiḥ divyaiḥ droṇaḥ pārtham avākirat
29. yadā pāṇḍavaḥ tasya astrāṇi astraiḥ vidhivat hanti

29. When the Pandava (Arjuna) expertly countered Drona's weapons with his own, Drona then showered Arjuna (Partha) with supreme divine weapons.
यद्यदस्त्रं स पार्थाय प्रयुङ्क्ते विजिगीषया ।
तस्यास्त्रस्य विघातार्थं तत्तत्स कुरुतेऽर्जुनः ॥३०॥
30. yadyadastraṁ sa pārthāya prayuṅkte vijigīṣayā ,
tasyāstrasya vighātārthaṁ tattatsa kurute'rjunaḥ.
30. yadyat astram sa pārthāya prayuṅkte vijigīṣayā
tasya astrasya vighātārtham tattat sa kurute arjunaḥ

30. Whatever weapon he (Drona) launched at Arjuna (Partha) with a desire for victory, Arjuna, for the purpose of counteracting that very weapon, rendered it ineffective.
स वध्यमानेष्वस्त्रेषु दिव्येष्वपि यथाविधि ।
अर्जुनेनार्जुनं द्रोणो मनसैवाभ्यपूजयत् ॥३१॥
31. sa vadhyamāneṣvastreṣu divyeṣvapi yathāvidhi ,
arjunenārjunaṁ droṇo manasaivābhyapūjayat.
31. saḥ vadhyamāneṣu astreṣu divyeṣu api yathāvidhi
arjunena arjunam droṇaḥ manasā eva abhyapūjayat
31. droṇaḥ arjunam manasā eva abhyapūjayat api

31. Even as his divine missiles were being countered by Arjuna according to the proper procedure, Drona honored Arjuna solely in his mind.
मेने चात्मानमधिकं पृथिव्यामपि भारत ।
तेन शिष्येण सर्वेभ्यः शस्त्रविद्भ्यः समन्ततः ॥३२॥
32. mene cātmānamadhikaṁ pṛthivyāmapi bhārata ,
tena śiṣyeṇa sarvebhyaḥ śastravidbhyaḥ samantataḥ.
32. mene ca ātmānam adhikam pṛthivyām api bhārata
tena śiṣyeṇa sarvebhyaḥ śastravidbhyaḥ samantataḥ
32. bhārata,

32. O descendant of Bharata (Bharata), Drona considered himself superior on earth to all weapon-experts everywhere because of that disciple (Arjuna).
वार्यमाणस्तु पार्थेन तथा मध्ये महात्मनाम् ।
यतमानोऽर्जुनं प्रीत्या प्रत्यवारयदुत्स्मयन् ॥३३॥
33. vāryamāṇastu pārthena tathā madhye mahātmanām ,
yatamāno'rjunaṁ prītyā pratyavārayadutsmayan.
33. vāryamāṇaḥ tu pārthena tathā madhye mahātmanām
yatamānaḥ arjunam prītyā pratyavārayat utsmayan
33. tu vāryamāṇaḥ pārthena tathā madhye mahātmanām,

33. But Drona, though being blocked by Arjuna (Partha) amidst great personalities, smiled in wonder and affectionately resisted Arjuna, even as he (Drona) made efforts.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे देवाश्च गन्धर्वाश्च सहस्रशः ।
ऋषयः सिद्धसंघाश्च व्यतिष्ठन्त दिदृक्षया ॥३४॥
34. tato'ntarikṣe devāśca gandharvāśca sahasraśaḥ ,
ṛṣayaḥ siddhasaṁghāśca vyatiṣṭhanta didṛkṣayā.
34. tataḥ antarikṣe devāḥ ca gandharvāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
ṛṣayaḥ siddhasaṃghāḥ ca vyatiṣṭhanta didṛkṣayā

34. Then, in the sky, thousands of gods, Gandharvas, sages, and groups of Siddhas gathered, desiring to witness the sight.
तदप्सरोभिराकीर्णं यक्षराक्षससंकुलम् ।
श्रीमदाकाशमभवद्भूयो मेघाकुलं यथा ॥३५॥
35. tadapsarobhirākīrṇaṁ yakṣarākṣasasaṁkulam ,
śrīmadākāśamabhavadbhūyo meghākulaṁ yathā.
35. tat apsarobhiḥ ākīrṇam yakṣarākṣasa-saṃkulam
śrīmat ākāśam abhavat bhūyaḥ meghākulam yathā
35. tat śrīmat ākāśam apsarobhiḥ ākīrṇam
yakṣarākṣasa-saṃkulam abhavat bhūyaḥ meghākulam yathā
35. That splendid sky became crowded with Apsaras and densely packed with Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, resembling a sky that has become overcast with clouds.
तत्र स्मान्तर्हिता वाचो व्यचरन्त पुनः पुनः ।
द्रोणस्य स्तवसंयुक्ताः पार्थस्य च महात्मनः ।
विसृज्यमानेष्वस्त्रेषु ज्वालयत्सु दिशो दश ॥३६॥
36. tatra smāntarhitā vāco vyacaranta punaḥ punaḥ ,
droṇasya stavasaṁyuktāḥ pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
visṛjyamāneṣvastreṣu jvālayatsu diśo daśa.
36. tatra sma antarhitāḥ vācaḥ vyacaranta
punaḥ punaḥ droṇasya stavasamyuktāḥ
pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ visṛjyamāṇeṣu

36. There, unseen voices repeatedly resonated, filled with praise for Droṇa and the great-souled Pārtha, as weapons were being discharged, setting ablaze all ten directions.
नैवेदं मानुषं युद्धं नासुरं न च राक्षसम् ।
न दैवं न च गान्धर्वं ब्राह्मं ध्रुवमिदं परम् ।
विचित्रमिदमाश्चर्यं न नो दृष्टं न च श्रुतम् ॥३७॥
37. naivedaṁ mānuṣaṁ yuddhaṁ nāsuraṁ na ca rākṣasam ,
na daivaṁ na ca gāndharvaṁ brāhmaṁ dhruvamidaṁ param ,
vicitramidamāścaryaṁ na no dṛṣṭaṁ na ca śrutam.
37. na eva idam mānuṣam yuddham na āsuram na
ca rākṣasam na daivam na ca gāndharvam
brāhmam dhruvam idam param vicitram
idam āścaryam na naḥ dṛṣṭam na ca śrutam
37. idam yuddham na eva mānuṣam na āsuram na ca rākṣasam na daivam na ca gāndharvam.
idam dhruvam param brāhmam.
idam vicitram āścaryam na naḥ dṛṣṭam na ca śrutam.
37. This battle is neither human, nor demonic, nor of the Rākṣasas. It is neither divine nor of the Gandharvas. This supreme event is certainly Brahmanic (brāhmam). This amazing wonder has never been seen or heard by us.
अति पाण्डवमाचार्यो द्रोणं चाप्यति पाण्डवः ।
नानयोरन्तरं द्रष्टुं शक्यमस्त्रेण केनचित् ॥३८॥
38. ati pāṇḍavamācāryo droṇaṁ cāpyati pāṇḍavaḥ ,
nānayorantaraṁ draṣṭuṁ śakyamastreṇa kenacit.
38. ati pāṇḍavam ācāryaḥ droṇam ca api ati pāṇḍavaḥ
na anayoḥ antaram draṣṭum śakyam astreṇa kenacit
38. ācāryaḥ pāṇḍavam ati.
ca pāṇḍavaḥ api droṇam ati.
anayoḥ antaram kenacit astreṇa draṣṭum na śakyam.
38. The teacher Droṇa surpasses Arjuna, and Arjuna in turn also surpasses Droṇa. No difference between these two can be perceived by means of any weapon.
यदि रुद्रो द्विधाकृत्य युध्येतात्मानमात्मना ।
तत्र शक्योपमा कर्तुमन्यत्र तु न विद्यते ॥३९॥
39. yadi rudro dvidhākṛtya yudhyetātmānamātmanā ,
tatra śakyopamā kartumanyatra tu na vidyate.
39. yadi rudraḥ dvidhākṛtya yudhyeta ātmānam ātmanā
tatra śakyā upamā kartum anyatra tu na vidyate
39. yadi rudraḥ dvidhākṛtya ātmānam ātmanā yudhyeta,
tatra upamā kartum śakyā; tu anyatra na vidyate.
39. If Rudra were to divide himself and fight his own self (ātman) with himself, then a suitable comparison could be made. But elsewhere, no such comparison exists.
ज्ञानमेकस्थमाचार्ये ज्ञानं योगश्च पाण्डवे ।
शौर्यमेकस्थमाचार्ये बलं शौर्यं च पाण्डवे ॥४०॥
40. jñānamekasthamācārye jñānaṁ yogaśca pāṇḍave ,
śauryamekasthamācārye balaṁ śauryaṁ ca pāṇḍave.
40. jñānam ekastham ācārye jñānam yogaḥ ca pāṇḍave
śauryam ekastham ācārye balam śauryam ca pāṇḍave
40. ācārye jñānam ekastham,
ca pāṇḍave jñānam yogaḥ; ācārye śauryam ekastham,
ca pāṇḍave balam śauryam.
40. Knowledge is concentrated in the teacher (Drona), but knowledge and disciplined action (yoga) are found in the Pandava (Arjuna). Similarly, valor is concentrated in the teacher, but strength and valor are found in the Pandava.
नेमौ शक्यौ महेष्वासौ रणे क्षेपयितुं परैः ।
इच्छमानौ पुनरिमौ हन्येतां सामरं जगत् ॥४१॥
41. nemau śakyau maheṣvāsau raṇe kṣepayituṁ paraiḥ ,
icchamānau punarimau hanyetāṁ sāmaraṁ jagat.
41. na imau śakyau maheṣvāsau raṇe kṣepayitum paraiḥ
icchamānau punar imau hanyetām sa-amaram jagat
41. paraiḥ imau maheṣvāsau raṇe kṣepayitum na śakyau.
imau punar icchamānau sāmaram jagat hanyetām.
41. These two great archers cannot be overcome in battle by their enemies. However, if these two desired it, they could destroy the entire world, including the gods.
इत्यब्रुवन्महाराज दृष्ट्वा तौ पुरुषर्षभौ ।
अन्तर्हितानि भूतानि प्रकाशानि च संघशः ॥४२॥
42. ityabruvanmahārāja dṛṣṭvā tau puruṣarṣabhau ,
antarhitāni bhūtāni prakāśāni ca saṁghaśaḥ.
42. iti abruvan mahārāja dṛṣṭvā tau puruṣarṣabhau
antarhitāni bhūtāni prakāśāni ca saṅghaśaḥ
42. mahārāja,
tau puruṣarṣabhau dṛṣṭvā,
antarhitāni ca prakāśāni bhūtāni saṅghaśaḥ iti abruvan.
42. O great king, having seen those two foremost among men, all beings, both visible and invisible, spoke thus in great numbers.
ततो द्रोणो ब्राह्ममस्त्रं प्रादुश्चक्रे महामतिः ।
संतापयन्रणे पार्थं भूतान्यन्तर्हितानि च ॥४३॥
43. tato droṇo brāhmamastraṁ prāduścakre mahāmatiḥ ,
saṁtāpayanraṇe pārthaṁ bhūtānyantarhitāni ca.
43. tataḥ droṇaḥ brāhmam astram prāduścakre mahāmatiḥ
saṃtāpayan raṇe pārtham bhūtāni antarhitāni ca
43. tataḥ mahāmatiḥ droṇaḥ brāhmam astram prāduścakre,

43. Then, the great-minded Drona manifested the divine (brahman) weapon, causing distress to Partha in battle and to the invisible beings.
ततश्चचाल पृथिवी सपर्वतवनद्रुमा ।
ववौ च विषमो वायुः सागराश्चापि चुक्षुभुः ॥४४॥
44. tataścacāla pṛthivī saparvatavanadrumā ,
vavau ca viṣamo vāyuḥ sāgarāścāpi cukṣubhuḥ.
44. tataḥ cacāla pṛthivī saparvatavanadrumā vavau
ca viṣamaḥ vāyuḥ sāgarāḥ ca api cukṣubhuḥ
44. tataḥ saparvatavanadrumā pṛthivī cacāla,
viṣamaḥ vāyuḥ ca vavau,
sāgarāḥ ca api cukṣubhuḥ
44. Then, the earth, along with its mountains, forests, and trees, began to tremble. A violent wind blew, and the oceans too became agitated.
ततस्त्रासो महानासीत्कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः ।
सर्वेषां चैव भूतानामुद्यतेऽस्त्रे महात्मना ॥४५॥
45. tatastrāso mahānāsītkurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ ,
sarveṣāṁ caiva bhūtānāmudyate'stre mahātmanā.
45. tataḥ trāsaḥ mahān āsīt kurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ
sarveṣām ca eva bhūtānām udyate astre mahātmanā
45. tataḥ mahātmanā astre udyate sati,
kurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ sarveṣām bhūtānām ca eva mahān trāsaḥ āsiīt
45. Then, a great terror arose in the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas, and indeed among all beings, as the weapon was brandished by the great-souled one (mahātman).
ततः पार्थोऽप्यसंभ्रान्तस्तदस्त्रं प्रतिजघ्निवान् ।
ब्रह्मास्त्रेणैव राजेन्द्र ततः सर्वमशीशमत् ॥४६॥
46. tataḥ pārtho'pyasaṁbhrāntastadastraṁ pratijaghnivān ,
brahmāstreṇaiva rājendra tataḥ sarvamaśīśamat.
46. tataḥ pārthaḥ api asaṃbhrāntaḥ tat astram pratijaghānvān
brahmāstreṇa eva rājendra tataḥ sarvam aśīśamat
46. tataḥ rājendra,

46. Then, O King of kings, Partha, undismayed, countered that weapon with a brahmāstra (brahman weapon) itself, and thereby he pacified everything.
यदा न गम्यते पारं तयोरन्यतरस्य वा ।
ततः संकुलयुद्धेन तद्युद्धं व्यकुलीकृतम् ॥४७॥
47. yadā na gamyate pāraṁ tayoranyatarasya vā ,
tataḥ saṁkulayuddhena tadyuddhaṁ vyakulīkṛtam.
47. yadā na gamyate pāram tayoḥ anyatarasya vā |
tataḥ saṃkulayuddhena tat yuddham vyakulīkṛtam
47. yadā tayoḥ anyatarasya pāram vā na gamyate,
tataḥ tat yuddham saṃkulayuddhena vyakulīkṛtam
47. When the limit or decisive end of either of the two sides could not be discerned, then that battle became utterly confused due to the tumultuous fighting.
नाज्ञायत ततः किंचित्पुनरेव विशां पते ।
प्रवृत्ते तुमुले युद्धे द्रोणपाण्डवयोर्मृधे ॥४८॥
48. nājñāyata tataḥ kiṁcitpunareva viśāṁ pate ,
pravṛtte tumule yuddhe droṇapāṇḍavayormṛdhe.
48. na ajñāyata tataḥ kiñcit punar eva viśām pate
| pravṛtte tumule yuddhe droṇapāṇḍavayoḥ mṛdhe
48. viśām pate,
tataḥ,
droṇapāṇḍavayoḥ tumule yuddhe mṛdhe pravṛtte,
kiñcit na punar eva ajñāyata.
48. O lord of the people, then, as that tumultuous battle between Droṇa and the Pāṇḍavas raged, nothing at all could be discerned from it.
शरजालैः समाकीर्णे मेघजालैरिवाम्बरे ।
न स्म संपतते कश्चिदन्तरिक्षचरस्तदा ॥४९॥
49. śarajālaiḥ samākīrṇe meghajālairivāmbare ,
na sma saṁpatate kaścidantarikṣacarastadā.
49. śarajālaiḥ samākīrṇe meghajālaiḥ iva ambare
| na sma saṃpatate kaścit antarikṣacaraḥ tadā
49. tadā ambare śarajālaiḥ meghajālaiḥ iva samākīrṇe [sati],
kaścit antarikṣacaraḥ na sma saṃpatate.
49. At that time, no aerial being (antarikṣacara) could fly down, as the sky was completely filled with showers of arrows, just as it would be by masses of clouds.
