Vaiśampāyana said: Then King Yudhiṣṭhira first approached Virāṭa, who was seated in the assembly hall. He (Yudhiṣṭhira), having taken up golden dice that resembled lapis lazuli, held them in his armpit with a cloth.

The king (Yudhiṣṭhira), greatly renowned and the enhancer of the Kuru dynasty, a highly esteemed person honored by kings, approached the famous lord of the kingdom (Virāṭa). He (Yudhiṣṭhira) was formidable, like a serpent (uraga) with potent venom.

That great chief among men (Yudhiṣṭhira), by his strength and his form, and moreover by his radiant appearance, was like a god. He was like the sun (ravi) enveloped by masses of great clouds, and, though covered by ash, like a fire (anala) that is still powerful.

Upon seeing that Pāṇḍava approaching, resembling the moon covered by a cloud, King Virāṭa asked his ministers, the twice-born (dvija), the chief charioteers, and whoever else was gathered in the assembly: "Who is this person who has just arrived and surveys the court with such an expression?"

5.
It is my firm conviction that this man is neither a twice-born (dvija), nor the best of men, nor a lord of the earth. He has no servant, no chariot, and no earrings near him, yet he shines like Indra.

6.
Indeed, the physical characteristics indicate that he is an anointed king (mūrdhābhiṣikta) - such is the thought (mānasam) in my mind. He approaches me, free from any anxiety, just as a powerful, rutting elephant approaches a lotus pond.

While he (Virāṭa) was thus pondering, Yudhiṣṭhira, that best of men, approached Virāṭa then and said, "May the Emperor understand that a twice-born (dvija) person has arrived here, seeking a livelihood, having lost all his possessions."

O sinless one (anagha), O lord (vibho), I wish to reside here near you as one who is free to move about as he pleases. Immediately after this, the king, delighted, said to him, 'Welcome!' and 'Please accept [my hospitality].'

Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'Formerly, I was a friend of Yudhiṣṭhira, the Vaiyāghrapadya. Furthermore, I am a Brahmin (brāhmaṇa). I am skilled in throwing dice, a dice player. O Virāṭa, I am renowned by the name Kaṅka.'

Virāṭa said: 'Indeed, I grant you whatever boon you desire. Rule over the Matsyas, for I am certainly subject to you. Indeed, I always hold dear those clever dice players. And you, O god-like one, are worthy of a kingdom.'

Yudhishthira said: O Lord of the people, a great dispute has arisen. There is nothing that exists without the Matsya (king's) authority. Let this be my boon, granted by your grace: no one whom I defeat (in gambling) shall retain their wealth.

Virata said: If anyone were to do something displeasing to you, I would kill even one who should not be killed, and I would banish the twice-born (dvija) from my kingdom. Let all the assembled citizens listen to me: just as I am the lord in this kingdom, so too is Kanka.
