ततो विराटं प्रथमं युधिष्ठिरो राजा सभायामुपविष्टमाव्रजत् ।
वैडूर्यरूपान्प्रतिमुच्य काञ्चनानक्षान्स कक्षे परिगृह्य वाससा ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato virāṭaṁ prathamaṁ yudhiṣṭhiro; rājā sabhāyāmupaviṣṭamāvrajat ,
vaiḍūryarūpānpratimucya kāñcanā;nakṣānsa kakṣe parigṛhya vāsasā.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ virāṭam prathamam
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā sabhāyām upaviṣṭam
āvrajat vaiḍūryarūpān pratimucya
kāñcanān akṣān saḥ kakṣe parigṛhya vāsasā
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then King Yudhiṣṭhira first approached Virāṭa, who was seated in the assembly hall. He (Yudhiṣṭhira), having taken up golden dice that resembled lapis lazuli, held them in his armpit with a cloth.
नराधिपो राष्ट्रपतिं यशस्विनं महायशाः कौरववंशवर्धनः ।
महानुभावो नरराजसत्कृतो दुरासदस्तीक्ष्णविषो यथोरगः ॥२॥
2. narādhipo rāṣṭrapatiṁ yaśasvinaṁ; mahāyaśāḥ kauravavaṁśavardhanaḥ ,
mahānubhāvo nararājasatkṛto; durāsadastīkṣṇaviṣo yathoragaḥ.

2. The king (Yudhiṣṭhira), greatly renowned and the enhancer of the Kuru dynasty, a highly esteemed person honored by kings, approached the famous lord of the kingdom (Virāṭa). He (Yudhiṣṭhira) was formidable, like a serpent (uraga) with potent venom.
बलेन रूपेण नरर्षभो महानथार्चिरूपेण यथामरस्तथा ।
महाभ्रजालैरिव संवृतो रविर्यथानलो भस्मवृतश्च वीर्यवान् ॥३॥
3. balena rūpeṇa nararṣabho mahā;nathārcirūpeṇa yathāmarastathā ,
mahābhrajālairiva saṁvṛto ravi;ryathānalo bhasmavṛtaśca vīryavān.

arcirūpeṇa yathā amaraḥ tathā
mahābhrajālaiḥ iva saṃvṛtaḥ raviḥ
yathā analaḥ bhasmavṛtaḥ ca vīryavān
3. That great chief among men (Yudhiṣṭhira), by his strength and his form, and moreover by his radiant appearance, was like a god. He was like the sun (ravi) enveloped by masses of great clouds, and, though covered by ash, like a fire (anala) that is still powerful.
तमापतन्तं प्रसमीक्ष्य पाण्डवं विराटराडिन्दुमिवाभ्रसंवृतम् ।
मन्त्रिद्विजान्सूतमुखान्विशस्तथा ये चापि केचित्परिषत्समासते ।
पप्रच्छ कोऽयं प्रथमं समेयिवाननेन योऽयं प्रसमीक्षते सभाम् ॥४॥
4. tamāpatantaṁ prasamīkṣya pāṇḍavaṁ; virāṭarāḍindumivābhrasaṁvṛtam ,
mantridvijānsūtamukhānviśastathā; ye cāpi kecitpariṣatsamāsate ,
papraccha ko'yaṁ prathamaṁ sameyivā;nanena yo'yaṁ prasamīkṣate sabhām.
4. tam āpatantam prasamīkṣya pāṇḍavam virāṭarāṭ indum iva
abhra-saṃvṛtam | mantri-dvijān sūta-mukhān viśaḥ tathā
ye ca api kecit pariṣat samāsate | papraccha kaḥ ayam
prathamam sameyivān anena yaḥ ayam prasamīkṣate sabhām
4. Upon seeing that Pāṇḍava approaching, resembling the moon covered by a cloud, King Virāṭa asked his ministers, the twice-born (dvija), the chief charioteers, and whoever else was gathered in the assembly: "Who is this person who has just arrived and surveys the court with such an expression?"
न तु द्विजोऽयं भविता नरोत्तमः पतिः पृथिव्या इति मे मनोगतम् ।
न चास्य दासो न रथो न कुण्डले समीपतो भ्राजति चायमिन्द्रवत् ॥५॥
5. na tu dvijo'yaṁ bhavitā narottamaḥ; patiḥ pṛthivyā iti me manogatam ,
na cāsya dāso na ratho na kuṇḍale; samīpato bhrājati cāyamindravat.
5. na tu dvijaḥ ayam bhavitā nara-uttamaḥ
patiḥ pṛthivyā iti me manaḥ-gatam |
na ca asya dāsaḥ na rathaḥ na kuṇḍale
samīpataḥ bhrājati ca ayam indravat
5. It is my firm conviction that this man is neither a twice-born (dvija), nor the best of men, nor a lord of the earth. He has no servant, no chariot, and no earrings near him, yet he shines like Indra.
शरीरलिङ्गैरुपसूचितो ह्ययं मूर्धाभिषिक्तोऽयमितीव मानसम् ।
समीपमायाति च मे गतव्यथो यथा गजस्तामरसीं मदोत्कटः ॥६॥
6. śarīraliṅgairupasūcito hyayaṁ; mūrdhābhiṣikto'yamitīva mānasam ,
samīpamāyāti ca me gatavyatho; yathā gajastāmarasīṁ madotkaṭaḥ.
6. śarīra-liṅgaiḥ upa-sūcitaḥ hi ayam
mūrdhā-abhiṣiktaḥ ayam iti iva mānasam
| samīpam āyāti ca me gata-vyathaḥ
yathā gajaḥ tāmarasīm mada-utkaṭaḥ
6. Indeed, the physical characteristics indicate that he is an anointed king (mūrdhābhiṣikta) - such is the thought (mānasam) in my mind. He approaches me, free from any anxiety, just as a powerful, rutting elephant approaches a lotus pond.
वितर्कयन्तं तु नरर्षभस्तदा युधिष्ठिरोऽभ्येत्य विराटमब्रवीत् ।
सम्राड्विजानात्विह जीवितार्थिनं विनष्टसर्वस्वमुपागतं द्विजम् ॥७॥
7. vitarkayantaṁ tu nararṣabhastadā; yudhiṣṭhiro'bhyetya virāṭamabravīt ,
samrāḍvijānātviha jīvitārthinaṁ; vinaṣṭasarvasvamupāgataṁ dvijam.
7. vitarkayantam tu nara-ṛṣabhaḥ tadā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ abhyetya virāṭam abravīt
| samrāṭ vijānātu iha jīvita-arthinam
vinaṣṭa-sarvasvam upa-āgatam dvijam
7. While he (Virāṭa) was thus pondering, Yudhiṣṭhira, that best of men, approached Virāṭa then and said, "May the Emperor understand that a twice-born (dvija) person has arrived here, seeking a livelihood, having lost all his possessions."
इहाहमिच्छामि तवानघान्तिके वस्तुं यथा कामचरस्तथा विभो ।
तमब्रवीत्स्वागतमित्यनन्तरं राजा प्रहृष्टः प्रतिसंगृहाण च ॥८॥
8. ihāhamicchāmi tavānaghāntike; vastuṁ yathā kāmacarastathā vibho ,
tamabravītsvāgatamityanantaraṁ; rājā prahṛṣṭaḥ pratisaṁgṛhāṇa ca.
8. iha aham icchāmi tava anagha antike
vastum yathā kāmacaraḥ tathā vibho
tam abravīt svāgatam iti anantaram
rājā prahr̥ṣṭaḥ pratisaṅgr̥hāṇa ca
8. O sinless one (anagha), O lord (vibho), I wish to reside here near you as one who is free to move about as he pleases. Immediately after this, the king, delighted, said to him, 'Welcome!' and 'Please accept [my hospitality].'
कामेन ताताभिवदाम्यहं त्वां कस्यासि राज्ञो विषयादिहागतः ।
गोत्रं च नामापि च शंस तत्त्वतः किं चापि शिल्पं तव विद्यते कृतम् ॥९॥
9. kāmena tātābhivadāmyahaṁ tvāṁ; kasyāsi rājño viṣayādihāgataḥ ,
gotraṁ ca nāmāpi ca śaṁsa tattvataḥ; kiṁ cāpi śilpaṁ tava vidyate kṛtam.
9. kāmena tāta abhivadāmi aham tvām kasya
asi rājñaḥ viṣayāt iha āgataḥ gotram
ca nāma api ca śaṃsa tattvataḥ
kim ca api śilpam tava vidyate kr̥tam
9. My dear (tāta), I speak to you with pleasure. From which king's country have you arrived here? Please tell me your lineage and name truthfully, and what skill or art (śilpa) have you mastered?
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरस्यासमहं पुरा सखा वैयाघ्रपद्यः पुनरस्मि ब्राह्मणः ।
अक्षान्प्रवप्तुं कुशलोऽस्मि देविता कङ्केति नाम्नास्मि विराट विश्रुतः ॥१०॥
10. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhirasyāsamahaṁ purā sakhā; vaiyāghrapadyaḥ punarasmi brāhmaṇaḥ ,
akṣānpravaptuṁ kuśalo'smi devitā; kaṅketi nāmnāsmi virāṭa viśrutaḥ.
10. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yudhiṣṭhirasya āsam aham
purā sakhā vaiyāghrapadyaḥ punaḥ asmi
brāhmaṇaḥ akṣān pravaptum kuśalaḥ asmi
devitā kaṅka iti nāmnā asmi virāṭa viśrutaḥ
10. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'Formerly, I was a friend of Yudhiṣṭhira, the Vaiyāghrapadya. Furthermore, I am a Brahmin (brāhmaṇa). I am skilled in throwing dice, a dice player. O Virāṭa, I am renowned by the name Kaṅka.'
विराट उवाच ।
ददामि ते हन्त वरं यमिच्छसि प्रशाधि मत्स्यान्वशगो ह्यहं तव ।
प्रिया हि धूर्ता मम देविनः सदा भवांश्च देवोपम राज्यमर्हति ॥११॥
11. virāṭa uvāca ,
dadāmi te hanta varaṁ yamicchasi; praśādhi matsyānvaśago hyahaṁ tava ,
priyā hi dhūrtā mama devinaḥ sadā; bhavāṁśca devopama rājyamarhati.
11. virāṭaḥ uvāca dadāmi te hanta varam yam
icchasi praśādhi matsyān vaśagaḥ hi
aham tava priyāḥ hi dhūrtāḥ mama devinaḥ
sadā bhavān ca devopama rājyam arhati
11. Virāṭa said: 'Indeed, I grant you whatever boon you desire. Rule over the Matsyas, for I am certainly subject to you. Indeed, I always hold dear those clever dice players. And you, O god-like one, are worthy of a kingdom.'
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
आप्तो विवादः परमो विशां पते न विद्यते किंचन मत्स्य हीनतः ।
न मे जितः कश्चन धारयेद्धनं वरो ममैषोऽस्तु तव प्रसादतः ॥१२॥
12. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
āpto vivādaḥ paramo viśāṁ pate; na vidyate kiṁcana matsya hīnataḥ ,
na me jitaḥ kaścana dhārayeddhanaṁ; varo mamaiṣo'stu tava prasādataḥ.
12. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | āptaḥ vivādaḥ paramaḥ
viśām pate na vidyate kiṃcana matsya
hīnataḥ | na me jitaḥ kaścana dhārayet
dhanam varaḥ mama eṣaḥ astu tava prasādataḥ
12. Yudhishthira said: O Lord of the people, a great dispute has arisen. There is nothing that exists without the Matsya (king's) authority. Let this be my boon, granted by your grace: no one whom I defeat (in gambling) shall retain their wealth.
विराट उवाच ।
हन्यामवध्यं यदि तेऽप्रियं चरेत्प्रव्राजयेयं विषयाद्द्विजांस्तथा ।
शृण्वन्तु मे जानपदाः समागताः कङ्को यथाहं विषये प्रभुस्तथा ॥१३॥
13. virāṭa uvāca ,
hanyāmavadhyaṁ yadi te'priyaṁ care;tpravrājayeyaṁ viṣayāddvijāṁstathā ,
śṛṇvantu me jānapadāḥ samāgatāḥ; kaṅko yathāhaṁ viṣaye prabhustathā.
13. virāṭaḥ uvāca | hanyām avadhyam yadi te
apriyam caret pravrājāyeyam viṣayāt dvijān
tathā | śṛṇvantu me jānapadāḥ samāgatāḥ
kaṅkaḥ yathā aham viṣaye prabhuḥ tathā
13. Virata said: If anyone were to do something displeasing to you, I would kill even one who should not be killed, and I would banish the twice-born (dvija) from my kingdom. Let all the assembled citizens listen to me: just as I am the lord in this kingdom, so too is Kanka.
समानयानो भवितासि मे सखा प्रभूतवस्त्रो बहुपानभोजनः ।
पश्येस्त्वमन्तश्च बहिश्च सर्वदा कृतं च ते द्वारमपावृतं मया ॥१४॥
14. samānayāno bhavitāsi me sakhā; prabhūtavastro bahupānabhojanaḥ ,
paśyestvamantaśca bahiśca sarvadā; kṛtaṁ ca te dvāramapāvṛtaṁ mayā.
14. samānayānaḥ bhavitā asi me sakhā
prabhūtavastraḥ bahupānabhojanaḥ |
paśyeḥ tvam antaḥ ca bahiḥ ca sarvadā
kṛtam ca te dvāram apāvṛtam mayā
14. You shall be my companion, riding in the same vehicle, richly clothed and with abundant drink and food. You shall always observe both what is inside and what is outside, and by me, your door has been made open.
ये त्वानुवादेयुरवृत्तिकर्शिता ब्रूयाश्च तेषां वचनेन मे सदा ।
दास्यामि सर्वं तदहं न संशयो न ते भयं विद्यति संनिधौ मम ॥१५॥
15. ye tvānuvādeyuravṛttikarśitā; brūyāśca teṣāṁ vacanena me sadā ,
dāsyāmi sarvaṁ tadahaṁ na saṁśayo; na te bhayaṁ vidyati saṁnidhau mama.
15. ye tu anuvādeyuḥ avṛttikarśitāḥ
brūyāḥ ca teṣām vacanena me sadā |
dāsyāmi sarvam tat aham na saṃśayaḥ
na te bhayam vidyati saṃnidhau mama
15. If anyone, afflicted by lack of livelihood, speaks against you, you should always speak to them on my behalf. I shall give you everything; there is no doubt. There will be no fear for you in my presence.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं स लब्ध्वा तु वरं समागमं विराटराजेन नरर्षभस्तदा ।
उवास वीरः परमार्चितः सुखी न चापि कश्चिच्चरितं बुबोध तत् ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ sa labdhvā tu varaṁ samāgamaṁ; virāṭarājena nararṣabhastadā ,
uvāsa vīraḥ paramārcitaḥ sukhī; na cāpi kaściccaritaṁ bubodha tat.
16. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam sa labdhvā tu
varam samāgamam virāṭarājena naraṛṣabhaḥ
tadā uvāsa vīraḥ paramārcitaḥ
sukhī na ca api kaścit caritam bubodha tat
16. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus obtained the boon of an alliance with King Virāṭa, that best among men, the hero [Yudhiṣṭhira] lived there, highly honored and happy. And yet, no one at all recognized his true identity.
