युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
न बिभेति कथं सा स्त्री शापस्य परमद्युतेः ।
कथं निवृत्तो भगवांस्तद्भवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
na bibheti kathaṁ sā strī śāpasya paramadyuteḥ ,
kathaṁ nivṛtto bhagavāṁstadbhavānprabravītu me.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'How is it that this woman does not fear the curse of the supremely brilliant Aṣṭāvakra? How did the venerable one (Aṣṭāvakra) turn away? Your honor, please tell me that.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
अष्टावक्रोऽन्वपृच्छत्तां रूपं विकुरुषे कथम् ।
न चानृतं ते वक्तव्यं ब्रूहि ब्राह्मणकाम्यया ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
aṣṭāvakro'nvapṛcchattāṁ rūpaṁ vikuruṣe katham ,
na cānṛtaṁ te vaktavyaṁ brūhi brāhmaṇakāmyayā.
2. bhīṣma uvāca aṣṭāvakraḥ anvapṛcchat tām rūpam vikuruṣe
katham na ca anṛtam te vaktavyam brūhi brāhmaṇakāmyayā
2. bhīṣma uvāca aṣṭāvakraḥ tām anvapṛcchat,
"katham rūpam vikuruṣe? ca anṛtam te na vaktavyam brāhmaṇakāmyayā brūhi "
2. Bhīṣma said: 'Aṣṭāvakra asked her, "How do you assume this form? And no untruth should be spoken by you. Speak, out of your desire to please a Brahmin."'
स्त्र्युवाच ।
द्यावापृथिवीमात्रैषा काम्या ब्राह्मणसत्तम ।
शृणुष्वावहितः सर्वं यदिदं सत्यविक्रम ॥३॥
3. stryuvāca ,
dyāvāpṛthivīmātraiṣā kāmyā brāhmaṇasattama ,
śṛṇuṣvāvahitaḥ sarvaṁ yadidaṁ satyavikrama.
3. strī uvāca dyāvāpṛthivīmātrā eṣā kāmyā brāhmaṇasattama
śṛṇuṣva avahitaḥ sarvam yat idam satyavikrama
3. strī uvāca brāhmaṇasattama,
eṣā dyāvāpṛthivīmātrā kāmyā (asti) satyavikrama,
avahitaḥ yat idam sarvam śṛṇuṣva
3. The woman said: 'O best among Brahmins, this desirable matter, whose scope encompasses heaven and earth, [is my truth]. O one mighty in truth, listen attentively to all of this.'
उत्तरां मां दिशं विद्धि दृष्टं स्त्रीचापलं च ते ।
अव्युत्थानेन ते लोका जिताः सत्यपराक्रम ॥४॥
4. uttarāṁ māṁ diśaṁ viddhi dṛṣṭaṁ strīcāpalaṁ ca te ,
avyutthānena te lokā jitāḥ satyaparākrama.
4. uttarām mām diśam viddhi dṛṣṭam strīcāpalam ca
te avyutthānena te lokāḥ jitāḥ satyaparākrama
4. mām uttarām diśam viddhi te strīcāpalam ca dṛṣṭam
satyaparākrama te avyutthānena lokāḥ jitāḥ
4. Know me as the northern direction. The fickleness of women has been observed by you. O you of true valor, by your steadfastness (in celibacy), the worlds have been conquered by you.
जिज्ञासेयं प्रयुक्ता मे स्थिरीकर्तुं तवानघ ।
स्थविराणामपि स्त्रीणां बाधते मैथुनज्वरः ॥५॥
5. jijñāseyaṁ prayuktā me sthirīkartuṁ tavānagha ,
sthavirāṇāmapi strīṇāṁ bādhate maithunajvaraḥ.
5. jijñāsā iyam prayuktā me sthirīkartum tava anagha
sthavirāṇām api strīṇām bādhate maithunajvaraḥ
5. anagha iyam jijñāsā me tava sthirīkartum prayuktā
sthavirāṇām strīṇām api maithunajvaraḥ bādhate
5. This inquiry was initiated by me to confirm your steadfastness, O sinless one. For even among aged women, the fever of carnal desire (maithunajvara) remains troubling.
तुष्टः पितामहस्तेऽद्य तथा देवाः सवासवाः ।
स त्वं येन च कार्येण संप्राप्तो भगवानिह ॥६॥
6. tuṣṭaḥ pitāmahaste'dya tathā devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
sa tvaṁ yena ca kāryeṇa saṁprāpto bhagavāniha.
6. tuṣṭaḥ pitāmahaḥ te adya tathā devāḥ savāsavāḥ
saḥ tvam yena ca kāryeṇa samprāptaḥ bhagavān iha
6. te pitāmahaḥ adya tuṣṭaḥ tathā savāsavāḥ devāḥ
saḥ tvam bhagavān ca yena kāryeṇa iha samprāptaḥ
6. Your grandfather (Brahmā) is pleased today, and so are the gods with Indra. And for the very purpose by which you, revered one, have arrived here...
प्रेषितस्तेन विप्रेण कन्यापित्रा द्विजर्षभ ।
तवोपदेशं कर्तुं वै तच्च सर्वं कृतं मया ॥७॥
7. preṣitastena vipreṇa kanyāpitrā dvijarṣabha ,
tavopadeśaṁ kartuṁ vai tacca sarvaṁ kṛtaṁ mayā.
7. preṣitaḥ tena vipreṇa kanyāpitrā dvijarṣabha tava
upadeśam kartum vai tat ca sarvam kṛtam mayā
7. dvijarṣabha tena vipreṇa kanyāpitrā preṣitaḥ tava
upadeśam kartum vai tat ca sarvam mayā kṛtam
7. O best among the twice-born (dvija)! You were sent by that brahmin, the father of the maiden. Indeed, I have done all that (was required) to impart instruction (upadeśa) to you.
क्षेमी गमिष्यसि गृहाञ्श्रमश्च न भविष्यति ।
कन्यां प्राप्स्यसि तां विप्र पुत्रिणी च भविष्यति ॥८॥
8. kṣemī gamiṣyasi gṛhāñśramaśca na bhaviṣyati ,
kanyāṁ prāpsyasi tāṁ vipra putriṇī ca bhaviṣyati.
8. kṣemī gamiṣyasi gṛhān śramaḥ ca na bhaviṣyati |
kanyām prāpsyasi tām vipra putriṇī ca bhaviṣyati
8. vipra kṣemī gṛhān gamiṣyasi ca śramaḥ na bhaviṣyati
tām kanyām prāpsyasi ca putriṇī bhaviṣyati
8. O Brahmin, you will return home safely, and there will be no fatigue. You will obtain that daughter, and she will have sons.
काम्यया पृष्टवांस्त्वं मां ततो व्याहृतमुत्तरम् ।
अनतिक्रमणीयैषा कृत्स्नैर्लोकैस्त्रिभिः सदा ॥९॥
9. kāmyayā pṛṣṭavāṁstvaṁ māṁ tato vyāhṛtamuttaram ,
anatikramaṇīyaiṣā kṛtsnairlokaistribhiḥ sadā.
9. kāmyayā pṛṣṭavān tvam mām tataḥ vyāhṛtam uttaram
| anatikramaṇīyā eṣā kṛtsnaiḥ lokaiḥ tribhiḥ sadā
9. tvam mām kāmyayā pṛṣṭavān tataḥ uttaram vyāhṛtam
eṣā kṛtsnaiḥ tribhiḥ lokaiḥ sadā anatikramaṇīyā
9. You asked me out of desire, therefore this answer has been given. This (decree) is always inviolable even by all three worlds.
गच्छस्व सुकृतं कृत्वा किं वान्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छसि ।
यावद्ब्रवीमि विप्रर्षे अष्टावक्र यथातथम् ॥१०॥
10. gacchasva sukṛtaṁ kṛtvā kiṁ vānyacchrotumicchasi ,
yāvadbravīmi viprarṣe aṣṭāvakra yathātatham.
10. gacchasva sukṛtam kṛtvā kim vā anyat śrotum icchasi
| yāvat bravīmi viprarṣe aṣṭāvakra yathātatham
10. sukṛtam kṛtvā gacchasva vā kim anyat śrotum icchasi
viprarṣe aṣṭāvakra yāvat yathātatham bravīmi
10. Go, having done what is righteous. Or what else do you wish to hear while I tell you, O Sage among brahmins (viprarṣi), Aṣṭāvakra, the truth (yathātatham)?
ऋषिणा प्रसादिता चास्मि तव हेतोर्द्विजर्षभ ।
तस्य संमाननार्थं मे त्वयि वाक्यं प्रभाषितम् ॥११॥
11. ṛṣiṇā prasāditā cāsmi tava hetordvijarṣabha ,
tasya saṁmānanārthaṁ me tvayi vākyaṁ prabhāṣitam.
11. ṛṣiṇā prasāditā ca asmi tava hetoḥ dvijarṣabha |
tasya saṃmānanārtham me tvayi vākyam prabhāṣitam
11. dvijarṣabha tava hetoḥ ṛṣiṇā prasāditā ca asmi
tasya saṃmānanārtham me tvayi vākyam prabhāṣitam
11. O best of brahmins (dvijarṣabha), I have been pleased by the sage on your behalf. For his honor, this statement has been spoken by me to you.
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्याः स विप्रः प्राञ्जलिः स्थितः ।
अनुज्ञातस्तया चापि स्वगृहं पुनराव्रजत् ॥१२॥
12. śrutvā tu vacanaṁ tasyāḥ sa vipraḥ prāñjaliḥ sthitaḥ ,
anujñātastayā cāpi svagṛhaṁ punarāvrajat.
12. śrutvā tu vacanam tasyāḥ saḥ vipraḥ prāñjaliḥ
sthitaḥ anujñātaḥ tayā ca api svagṛham punaḥ āvrajat
12. saḥ vipraḥ tasyāḥ vacanam śrutvā prāñjaliḥ sthitaḥ
tayā ca api anujñātaḥ punaḥ svagṛham āvrajat
12. Having heard her words, that brahmin stood with folded hands. After being granted permission by her, he then returned to his own home.
गृहमागम्य विश्रान्तः स्वजनं प्रतिपूज्य च ।
अभ्यगच्छत तं विप्रं न्यायतः कुरुनन्दन ॥१३॥
13. gṛhamāgamya viśrāntaḥ svajanaṁ pratipūjya ca ,
abhyagacchata taṁ vipraṁ nyāyataḥ kurunandana.
13. gṛham āgamya viśrāntaḥ svajanam pratipūjya ca
abhi agacchata tam vipram nyāyataḥ kurunandana
13. kurunandana gṛham āgamya viśrāntaḥ ca svajanam
pratipūjya tam vipram nyāyataḥ abhi agacchata
13. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), having returned home and rested, and having honored his own people, he then properly approached that brahmin.
पृष्टश्च तेन विप्रेण दृष्टं त्वेतन्निदर्शनम् ।
प्राह विप्रं तदा विप्रः सुप्रीतेनान्तरात्मना ॥१४॥
14. pṛṣṭaśca tena vipreṇa dṛṣṭaṁ tvetannidarśanam ,
prāha vipraṁ tadā vipraḥ suprītenāntarātmanā.
14. pṛṣṭaḥ ca tena vipreṇa dṛṣṭam tu etat nidarśanam
prāha vipram tadā vipraḥ suprītena antarātmanā
14. ca tena vipreṇa pṛṣṭaḥ (tu) etat nidarśanam dṛṣṭam (iti),
tadā vipraḥ suprītena antarātmanā vipram prāha
14. And when he was asked by that brahmin about this vision (nidarśanam) he had seen, then the (traveling) brahmin, with a very pleased inner self (ātman), spoke to that (other) brahmin.
भवताहमनुज्ञातः प्रस्थितो गन्धमादनम् ।
तस्य चोत्तरतो देशे दृष्टं तद्दैवतं महत् ॥१५॥
15. bhavatāhamanujñātaḥ prasthito gandhamādanam ,
tasya cottarato deśe dṛṣṭaṁ taddaivataṁ mahat.
15. bhavatā aham anujñātaḥ prasthitaḥ gandhamādanam
tasya ca uttarataḥ deśe dṛṣṭam tat daivatam mahat
15. bhavatā aham anujñātaḥ (san) gandhamādanam prasthitaḥ
ca tasya uttarataḥ deśe tat mahat daivatam dṛṣṭam
15. "I was granted permission by you and set out for Gandhamādana. And in the region north of that (mountain), that great divine being (daivata) was seen."
तया चाहमनुज्ञातो भवांश्चापि प्रकीर्तितः ।
श्रावितश्चापि तद्वाक्यं गृहमभ्यागतः प्रभो ॥१६॥
16. tayā cāhamanujñāto bhavāṁścāpi prakīrtitaḥ ,
śrāvitaścāpi tadvākyaṁ gṛhamabhyāgataḥ prabho.
16. tayā ca aham anujñātaḥ bhavān ca api prakīrtitaḥ
śrāvitaḥ ca api tat vākyam gṛham abhyāgataḥ prabho
16. aham tayā ca anujñātaḥ ca bhavān api prakīrtitaḥ
ca api tat vākyam śrāvitaḥ gṛham abhyāgataḥ prabho
16. And I was permitted by her; you were also mentioned. Having heard her words, I returned home, O lord.
तमुवाच ततो विप्रः प्रतिगृह्णीष्व मे सुताम् ।
नक्षत्रतिथिसंयोगे पात्रं हि परमं भवान् ॥१७॥
17. tamuvāca tato vipraḥ pratigṛhṇīṣva me sutām ,
nakṣatratithisaṁyoge pātraṁ hi paramaṁ bhavān.
17. tam uvāca tataḥ vipraḥ pratigṛhṇīṣva me sutām
nakṣatra-tithi-saṃyoge pātram hi paramam bhavān
17. tataḥ vipraḥ tam uvāca me sutām pratigṛhṇīṣva
hi bhavān nakṣatra-tithi-saṃyoge paramam pātram
17. Then the Brahmin said to him, 'Please accept my daughter. Indeed, you are the most suitable recipient for this auspicious conjunction of star and lunar day.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
अष्टावक्रस्तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रतिगृह्य च तां प्रभो ।
कन्यां परमधर्मात्मा प्रीतिमांश्चाभवत्तदा ॥१८॥
18. bhīṣma uvāca ,
aṣṭāvakrastathetyuktvā pratigṛhya ca tāṁ prabho ,
kanyāṁ paramadharmātmā prītimāṁścābhavattadā.
18. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca aṣṭāvakraḥ tathā iti uktvā pratigṛhya ca tām
prabho kanyām parama-dharmātmā prītimān ca abhavat tadā
18. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca prabho,
parama-dharmātmā aṣṭāvakraḥ tathā iti uktvā ca tām kanyām pratigṛhya tadā ca prītimān abhavat
18. Bhishma said: 'O lord, Aṣṭāvakra, the most righteous (dharma) soul, having said "So be it" and accepted that maiden, then became very joyful.'
कन्यां तां प्रतिगृह्यैव भार्यां परमशोभनाम् ।
उवास मुदितस्तत्र आश्रमे स्वे गतज्वरः ॥१९॥
19. kanyāṁ tāṁ pratigṛhyaiva bhāryāṁ paramaśobhanām ,
uvāsa muditastatra āśrame sve gatajvaraḥ.
19. kanyām tām pratigṛhya eva bhāryām parama-śobhanām
uvāsa muditaḥ tatra āśrame sve gata-jvaraḥ
19. tām parama-śobhanām kanyām eva bhāryām pratigṛhya
muditaḥ gata-jvaraḥ sve āśrame tatra uvāsa
19. Having indeed accepted that exceedingly beautiful maiden as his wife, he lived there, joyful and free from sorrow, in his own hermitage (āśrama).
