गरुड उवाच ।
सख्यं मेऽस्तु त्वया देव यथेच्छसि पुरंदर ।
बलं तु मम जानीहि महच्चासह्यमेव च ॥१॥
1. garuḍa uvāca ,
sakhyaṁ me'stu tvayā deva yathecchasi puraṁdara ,
balaṁ tu mama jānīhi mahaccāsahyameva ca.
1. garuḍa uvāca sakhyam me astu tvayā deva yathā icchasi
purandara balam tu mama jānīhi mahat ca asahyam eva ca
1. Garuda said: 'O god, O Purandara, let our friendship be as you wish. But know that my strength is truly great and irresistible.'
कामं नैतत्प्रशंसन्ति सन्तः स्वबलसंस्तवम् ।
गुणसंकीर्तनं चापि स्वयमेव शतक्रतो ॥२॥
2. kāmaṁ naitatpraśaṁsanti santaḥ svabalasaṁstavam ,
guṇasaṁkīrtanaṁ cāpi svayameva śatakrato.
2. kāmam na etat praśaṁsanti santaḥ svabalasaṁstavam
guṇasaṁkīrtanam ca api svayam eva śatakrato
2. O Śatakratu, good people certainly do not commend this: praising one's own strength, or indeed, even recounting one's own virtues.
सखेति कृत्वा तु सखे पृष्टो वक्ष्याम्यहं त्वया ।
न ह्यात्मस्तवसंयुक्तं वक्तव्यमनिमित्ततः ॥३॥
3. sakheti kṛtvā tu sakhe pṛṣṭo vakṣyāmyahaṁ tvayā ,
na hyātmastavasaṁyuktaṁ vaktavyamanimittataḥ.
3. sakhā iti kṛtvā tu sakhe pṛṣṭaḥ vakṣyāmi aham tvayā
na hi ātmasaṁstavasaṁyuktam vaktavyam animittataḥ
3. But, O friend, since you have addressed me as 'friend' and asked, I will tell you. For indeed, one should not speak words tainted by self-praise without a proper cause.
सपर्वतवनामुर्वीं ससागरवनामिमाम् ।
पक्षनाड्यैकया शक्र त्वां चैवात्रावलम्बिनम् ॥४॥
4. saparvatavanāmurvīṁ sasāgaravanāmimām ,
pakṣanāḍyaikayā śakra tvāṁ caivātrāvalambinam.
4. saparvatavanām urvīm sasāgaravanām imām pakṣanāḍyā
ekayā śakra tvām ca eva atra avalambinam
4. O Shakra, I can hold this entire earth – with its mountains, forests, and oceans – and even you, who are dwelling upon it, by just a single feather-quill.
सर्वान्संपिण्डितान्वापि लोकान्सस्थाणुजङ्गमान् ।
वहेयमपरिश्रान्तो विद्धीदं मे महद्बलम् ॥५॥
5. sarvānsaṁpiṇḍitānvāpi lokānsasthāṇujaṅgamān ,
vaheyamapariśrānto viddhīdaṁ me mahadbalam.
5. sarvān saṃpiṇḍitān vā api lokān sasthāṇujaṅgamān
vaheyām apariśrāntaḥ viddhi idam me mahat balam
5. I can carry, tirelessly, all the gathered worlds, including both stationary and moving beings. Understand this to be my great strength.
सूत उवाच ।
इत्युक्तवचनं वीरं किरीटी श्रीमतां वरः ।
आह शौनक देवेन्द्रः सर्वभूतहितः प्रभुः ॥६॥
6. sūta uvāca ,
ityuktavacanaṁ vīraṁ kirīṭī śrīmatāṁ varaḥ ,
āha śaunaka devendraḥ sarvabhūtahitaḥ prabhuḥ.
6. sūtaḥ uvāca iti ukta-vacanam vīram kirīṭī śrīmatām
varaḥ āha śaunaka devendraḥ sarva-bhūta-hitaḥ prabhuḥ
6. Sūta said: 'O Śaunaka, Devendra, known as Kirīṭī, the best among the glorious, the benevolent lord of all beings, then spoke to the hero who had just uttered those words.'
प्रतिगृह्यतामिदानीं मे सख्यमानन्त्यमुत्तमम् ।
न कार्यं तव सोमेन मम सोमः प्रदीयताम् ।
अस्मांस्ते हि प्रबाधेयुर्येभ्यो दद्याद्भवानिमम् ॥७॥
7. pratigṛhyatāmidānīṁ me sakhyamānantyamuttamam ,
na kāryaṁ tava somena mama somaḥ pradīyatām ,
asmāṁste hi prabādheyuryebhyo dadyādbhavānimam.
7. pratigṛhyatām idānīm me sakhyam
ānantyam uttamam na kāryam tava somena
mama somaḥ pradīyatām asmān te hi
prabādheyuḥ yebhyaḥ dadyāt bhavān imam
7. Accept now this excellent, eternal friendship of mine. You have no use for Soma; let Soma be given to me instead. Indeed, those to whom you might give it would surely oppress us (gods).
गरुड उवाच ।
किंचित्कारणमुद्दिश्य सोमोऽयं नीयते मया ।
न दास्यामि समादातुं सोमं कस्मैचिदप्यहम् ॥८॥
8. garuḍa uvāca ,
kiṁcitkāraṇamuddiśya somo'yaṁ nīyate mayā ,
na dāsyāmi samādātuṁ somaṁ kasmaicidapyaham.
8. garuḍaḥ uvāca kiṃcit kāraṇam uddiśya somaḥ ayam nīyate
mayā na dāsyāmi samādātum somam kasmaicit api aham
8. Garuḍa said: 'This Soma is being taken by me for a particular reason. I will not give Soma to anyone for them to acquire it.'
यत्रेमं तु सहस्राक्ष निक्षिपेयमहं स्वयम् ।
त्वमादाय ततस्तूर्णं हरेथास्त्रिदशेश्वर ॥९॥
9. yatremaṁ tu sahasrākṣa nikṣipeyamahaṁ svayam ,
tvamādāya tatastūrṇaṁ harethāstridaśeśvara.
9. yatra imam tu sahasrākṣa nikṣipeyām aham svayam
tvam ādāya tataḥ tūrṇam harethāḥ tridaśeśvara
9. O thousand-eyed one, O Lord of the thirty gods, the moment I myself place this (Soma) somewhere, you should quickly take it from there.
शक्र उवाच ।
वाक्येनानेन तुष्टोऽहं यत्त्वयोक्तमिहाण्डज ।
यदिच्छसि वरं मत्तस्तद्गृहाण खगोत्तम ॥१०॥
10. śakra uvāca ,
vākyenānena tuṣṭo'haṁ yattvayoktamihāṇḍaja ,
yadicchasi varaṁ mattastadgṛhāṇa khagottama.
10. śakraḥ uvāca vākyena anena tuṣṭaḥ aham yat tvayā uktam iha
aṇḍaja yat icchasi varam mattaḥ tat gṛhāṇa khaga uttama
10. Indra said: "By this speech that you have uttered here, O bird-born one, I am pleased. Whatever boon you desire from me, O best of birds, accept that."
सूत उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं कद्रूपुत्राननुस्मरन् ।
स्मृत्वा चैवोपधिकृतं मातुर्दास्यनिमित्ततः ॥११॥
11. sūta uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ kadrūputrānanusmaran ,
smṛtvā caivopadhikṛtaṁ māturdāsyanimittataḥ.
11. sūtaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ prati uvāca idam kadrūputrān
anusmaran smṛtvā ca eva upadhikṛtam mātuḥ dāsya nimittataḥ
11. Sūta said: "Being thus addressed, (Garuḍa) replied this, remembering the sons of Kadrū and recalling the deception that had been made regarding his mother's servitude."
ईशोऽहमपि सर्वस्य करिष्यामि तु तेऽर्थिताम् ।
भवेयुर्भुजगाः शक्र मम भक्ष्या महाबलाः ॥१२॥
12. īśo'hamapi sarvasya kariṣyāmi tu te'rthitām ,
bhaveyurbhujagāḥ śakra mama bhakṣyā mahābalāḥ.
12. īśaḥ aham api sarvasya kariṣyāmi tu te arthitām
bhaveyuḥ bhujagāḥ śakra mama bhakṣyāḥ mahābalāḥ
12. Though I am the lord of all, I will certainly fulfill your request. O Indra, may the great and powerful serpents become my food.
तथेत्युक्त्वान्वगच्छत्तं ततो दानवसूदनः ।
हरिष्यामि विनिक्षिप्तं सोममित्यनुभाष्य तम् ॥१३॥
13. tathetyuktvānvagacchattaṁ tato dānavasūdanaḥ ,
hariṣyāmi vinikṣiptaṁ somamityanubhāṣya tam.
13. tathā iti uktvā anu agacchat tam tataḥ dānavasūdanaḥ
hariṣyāmi vinikṣiptam somam iti anubhāṣya tam
13. Having said, 'So be it,' and having gone after him (Garuḍa), the destroyer of Dānavas (Indra) then said, 'I will take away the Soma that has been placed [there],' speaking thus to him.
आजगाम ततस्तूर्णं सुपर्णो मातुरन्तिकम् ।
अथ सर्पानुवाचेदं सर्वान्परमहृष्टवत् ॥१४॥
14. ājagāma tatastūrṇaṁ suparṇo māturantikam ,
atha sarpānuvācedaṁ sarvānparamahṛṣṭavat.
14. ājagāma tataḥ tūrṇam suparṇaḥ mātuḥ antikam
atha sarpān uvāca idam sarvān paramahṛṣṭavat
14. Then Suparṇa (Garuḍa) swiftly came to his mother's side. And then, exceedingly pleased, he spoke this to all the serpents.
इदमानीतममृतं निक्षेप्स्यामि कुशेषु वः ।
स्नाता मङ्गलसंयुक्तास्ततः प्राश्नीत पन्नगाः ॥१५॥
15. idamānītamamṛtaṁ nikṣepsyāmi kuśeṣu vaḥ ,
snātā maṅgalasaṁyuktāstataḥ prāśnīta pannagāḥ.
15. idam ānītam amṛtam nikṣepsyāmi kuśeṣu vaḥ
snātāḥ maṅgalasaṃyuktāḥ tataḥ prāśnīta pannagāḥ
15. O serpents, I will place this nectar, which I have brought, on the Darbha grass for you. After you have bathed and performed auspicious rituals, then consume it.
अदासी चैव मातेयमद्यप्रभृति चास्तु मे ।
यथोक्तं भवतामेतद्वचो मे प्रतिपादितम् ॥१६॥
16. adāsī caiva māteyamadyaprabhṛti cāstu me ,
yathoktaṁ bhavatāmetadvaco me pratipāditam.
16. adāsī ca eva mātā iyam adyaprabhṛti ca astu me
yathā uktam bhavatām etat vacaḥ me pratipāditam
16. Indeed, this mother of mine shall no longer be a slave from this day forward. This promise, as spoken by you, has been fulfilled by me.
ततः स्नातुं गताः सर्पाः प्रत्युक्त्वा तं तथेत्युत ।
शक्रोऽप्यमृतमाक्षिप्य जगाम त्रिदिवं पुनः ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ snātuṁ gatāḥ sarpāḥ pratyuktvā taṁ tathetyuta ,
śakro'pyamṛtamākṣipya jagāma tridivaṁ punaḥ.
17. tataḥ snātum gatāḥ sarpāḥ pratyuktvā tam tathā iti
uta śakraḥ api amṛtam ākṣipya jagāma tridivam punaḥ
17. Then, after replying to him with 'So be it,' the serpents went to bathe. Indra also, having seized the nectar, returned to heaven.
अथागतास्तमुद्देशं सर्पाः सोमार्थिनस्तदा ।
स्नाताश्च कृतजप्याश्च प्रहृष्टाः कृतमङ्गलाः ॥१८॥
18. athāgatāstamuddeśaṁ sarpāḥ somārthinastadā ,
snātāśca kṛtajapyāśca prahṛṣṭāḥ kṛtamaṅgalāḥ.
18. atha āgatāḥ tam uddeśam sarpāḥ somārthinaḥ tadā
snātāḥ ca kṛtajapyāḥ ca prahṛṣṭāḥ kṛtamaṅgalāḥ
18. Then, at that time, the serpents, who desired the nectar, arrived at that spot. They were bathed, had performed their prayers, and completed auspicious rites, and were full of joy.
तद्विज्ञाय हृतं सर्पाः प्रतिमायाकृतं च तत् ।
सोमस्थानमिदं चेति दर्भांस्ते लिलिहुस्तदा ॥१९॥
19. tadvijñāya hṛtaṁ sarpāḥ pratimāyākṛtaṁ ca tat ,
somasthānamidaṁ ceti darbhāṁste lilihustadā.
19. tat vijñāya hṛtam sarpāḥ pratimāyā ākṛtam ca tat
somasthānam idam ca iti darbhān te lilihuḥ tadā
19. Recognizing that the nectar had been stolen and that it was merely an illusion, and believing 'this is the place of the Soma,' the serpents then licked those Darbha grasses.
ततो द्वैधीकृता जिह्वा सर्पाणां तेन कर्मणा ।
अभवंश्चामृतस्पर्शाद्दर्भास्तेऽथ पवित्रिणः ॥२०॥
20. tato dvaidhīkṛtā jihvā sarpāṇāṁ tena karmaṇā ,
abhavaṁścāmṛtasparśāddarbhāste'tha pavitriṇaḥ.
20. tataḥ dvaidhīkṛtā jihvā sarpāṇām tena karmaṇā
abhavan ca amṛtasparśāt darbhāḥ te atha pavitriṇaḥ
20. Consequently, the serpents' tongues were split by that deed. And then, due to the touch of the nectar, those darbha grasses became sacred.
ततः सुपर्णः परमप्रहृष्टवान्विहृत्य मात्रा सह तत्र कानने ।
भुजंगभक्षः परमार्चितः खगैरहीनकीर्तिर्विनतामनन्दयत् ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ suparṇaḥ paramaprahṛṣṭavā;nvihṛtya mātrā saha tatra kānane ,
bhujaṁgabhakṣaḥ paramārcitaḥ khagai;rahīnakīrtirvinatāmanandayat.
21. tataḥ suparṇaḥ paramaprahṛṣṭavān
vihṛtya mātrā saha tatra kānane
bhujaṅgabhakṣaḥ paramārcitaḥ
khagaiḥ ahīnakīrtiḥ vinatām anandayāt
21. Then, greatly delighted, Suparna, the devourer of serpents, who was highly honored by other birds and possessed unfading glory, gladdened his mother Vinata after sporting with her in that forest.
इमां कथां यः शृणुयान्नरः सदा पठेत वा द्विजजनमुख्यसंसदि ।
असंशयं त्रिदिवमियात्स पुण्यभाङ्महात्मनः पतगपतेः प्रकीर्तनात् ॥२२॥
22. imāṁ kathāṁ yaḥ śṛṇuyānnaraḥ sadā; paṭheta vā dvijajanamukhyasaṁsadi ,
asaṁśayaṁ tridivamiyātsa puṇyabhā;ṅmahātmanaḥ patagapateḥ prakīrtanāt.
22. imām kathām yaḥ śṛṇuyāt naraḥ sadā
paṭhet vā dvijajanamukhyasaṃsadi
asaṃśayam tridivam iyāt saḥ puṇyabhāk
mahātmanaḥ patagapateḥ prakīrtanāt
22. The person who always listens to or recites this story in an assembly of prominent Brahmins will undoubtedly attain heaven. Such a meritorious individual reaches that state through the glorification of the great-souled Lord of birds (Garuda).
