कथं गच्छति कौन्तेयो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमसेनः सव्यसाची माद्रीपुत्रौ च तावुभौ ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kathaṁ gacchati kaunteyo dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhīmasenaḥ savyasācī mādrīputrau ca tāvubhau.

1. Dhritarashtra said: 'How fares the son of Kunti, King of righteousness (dharma), Yudhishthira? And Bhimasena, Savyasaci (Arjuna), and both those sons of Madri?'
धौम्यश्चैव कथं क्षत्तर्द्रौपदी वा तपस्विनी ।
श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं सर्वं तेषामङ्गविचेष्टितम् ॥२॥
2. dhaumyaścaiva kathaṁ kṣattardraupadī vā tapasvinī ,
śrotumicchāmyahaṁ sarvaṁ teṣāmaṅgaviceṣṭitam.
2. dhaumyaḥ ca eva katham kṣattar draupadī vā tapasvinī
śrotum icchāmi aham sarvam teṣām aṅgaviceṣṭitam
2. And how fares Dhaumya, O charioteer (kṣattṛ)? And Draupadi, that ascetic (tapasvinī) lady? I wish to hear all their activities.
विदुर उवाच ।
वस्त्रेण संवृत्य मुखं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
बाहू विशालौ कृत्वा तु भीमो गच्छति पाण्डवः ॥३॥
3. vidura uvāca ,
vastreṇa saṁvṛtya mukhaṁ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bāhū viśālau kṛtvā tu bhīmo gacchati pāṇḍavaḥ.
3. viduraḥ uvāca vastreṇa saṃvṛtya mukham kuntīputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bāhū viśālau kṛtvā tu bhīmaḥ gacchati pāṇḍavaḥ
3. Vidura said: Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, goes covering his face with a cloth. And Bhīma, the Pāṇḍava, goes with his powerful arms (bāhu) spread wide.
सिकता वपन्सव्यसाची राजानमनुगच्छति ।
माद्रीपुत्रः सहदेवो मुखमालिप्य गच्छति ॥४॥
4. sikatā vapansavyasācī rājānamanugacchati ,
mādrīputraḥ sahadevo mukhamālipya gacchati.

4. Savyasācī (Arjuna) follows the king, scattering sand. Sahadeva, the son of Mādrī, goes with his face smeared.
पांसूपलिप्तसर्वाङ्गो नकुलश्चित्तविह्वलः ।
दर्शनीयतमो लोके राजानमनुगच्छति ॥५॥
5. pāṁsūpaliptasarvāṅgo nakulaścittavihvalaḥ ,
darśanīyatamo loke rājānamanugacchati.
5. pāṃsūpalaptasarvāṅgaḥ nakulaḥ cittavihvalaḥ
darśanīyatamaḥ loke rājānam anugacchati
5. Nakula, whose entire body is smeared with dust and whose mind is bewildered, the most handsome in the world, follows the king.
कृष्णा केशैः प्रतिच्छाद्य मुखमायतलोचना ।
दर्शनीया प्ररुदती राजानमनुगच्छति ॥६॥
6. kṛṣṇā keśaiḥ praticchādya mukhamāyatalocanā ,
darśanīyā prarudatī rājānamanugacchati.

darśanīyā prarudatī rājānam anugacchati
6. Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), with wide eyes, goes covering her face with her hair. Beautiful to behold, and weeping loudly, she follows the king.
धौम्यो याम्यानि सामानि रौद्राणि च विशां पते ।
गायन्गच्छति मार्गेषु कुशानादाय पाणिना ॥७॥
7. dhaumyo yāmyāni sāmāni raudrāṇi ca viśāṁ pate ,
gāyangacchati mārgeṣu kuśānādāya pāṇinā.
7. dhaumyaḥ yāmyāni sāmāni raudrāṇi ca viśām pate
gāyan gacchati mārgeṣu kuśān ādāya pāṇinā
7. O lord of the people, Dhaumya walks along the paths, singing the Sāman melodies associated with Yama (yāmya) and Rudra (raudra), holding kusha grass in his hand.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
विविधानीह रूपाणि कृत्वा गच्छन्ति पाण्डवाः ।
तन्ममाचक्ष्व विदुर कस्मादेवं व्रजन्ति ते ॥८॥
8. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
vividhānīha rūpāṇi kṛtvā gacchanti pāṇḍavāḥ ,
tanmamācakṣva vidura kasmādevaṁ vrajanti te.
8. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca vividhāni iha rūpāṇi kṛtvā gacchanti
pāṇḍavāḥ tat mama ācakṣva vidura kasmāt evam vrajanti te
8. Dhritarashtra said: "The Pandavas are going forth having assumed various forms here. Therefore, tell me, Vidura, why do they proceed in this manner?"
विदुर उवाच ।
निकृतस्यापि ते पुत्रैर्हृते राज्ये धनेषु च ।
न धर्माच्चलते बुद्धिर्धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥९॥
9. vidura uvāca ,
nikṛtasyāpi te putrairhṛte rājye dhaneṣu ca ,
na dharmāccalate buddhirdharmarājasya dhīmataḥ.
9. viduraḥ uvāca nikṛtasya api te putraiḥ hṛte rājye dhaneṣu
ca na dharmāt calate buddhiḥ dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
9. Vidura said: "Even though he has been cheated by your sons and his kingdom and wealth have been taken away, the mind (buddhi) of the wise King Yudhishthira (dharmarāja) does not deviate from his righteousness (dharma)."
योऽसौ राजा घृणी नित्यं धार्तराष्ट्रेषु भारत ।
निकृत्या क्रोधसंतप्तो नोन्मीलयति लोचने ॥१०॥
10. yo'sau rājā ghṛṇī nityaṁ dhārtarāṣṭreṣu bhārata ,
nikṛtyā krodhasaṁtapto nonmīlayati locane.
10. yaḥ asau rājā ghṛṇī nityam dhārtarāṣṭreṣu bhārata
nikṛtyā krodhasaṃtaptaḥ na unmīlayati locane
10. O Bharata, that King, who is always compassionate towards the sons of Dhritarashtra (dhārtarāṣṭreṣu), does not open his two eyes (in fury) even though he is consumed by anger (krodhasaṃtapta) due to their deception.
नाहं जनं निर्दहेयं दृष्ट्वा घोरेण चक्षुषा ।
स पिधाय मुखं राजा तस्माद्गच्छति पाण्डवः ॥११॥
11. nāhaṁ janaṁ nirdaheyaṁ dṛṣṭvā ghoreṇa cakṣuṣā ,
sa pidhāya mukhaṁ rājā tasmādgacchati pāṇḍavaḥ.
11. na aham janam nirdheyam dṛṣṭvā ghoreṇa cakṣuṣā
saḥ pidhāya mukham rājā tasmāt gacchati pāṇḍavaḥ
11. I would not consume people merely by looking at them with a terrible eye. Therefore, that king, the Pandava (Pāṇḍava) prince, goes with his face covered.
यथा च भीमो व्रजति तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ।
बाह्वोर्बले नास्ति समो ममेति भरतर्षभ ॥१२॥
12. yathā ca bhīmo vrajati tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu ,
bāhvorbale nāsti samo mameti bharatarṣabha.
12. yathā ca bhīmaḥ vrajati tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
bāhvoḥ bale na asti samaḥ mama iti bharatarṣabha
12. O best of Bharatas (Bharatarṣabha), listen as I narrate to you how Bhīma proceeds, (thinking), 'No one is equal to me in the strength of my arms.'
बाहू विशालौ कृत्वा तु तेन भीमोऽपि गच्छति ।
बाहू दर्शयमानो हि बाहुद्रविणदर्पितः ।
चिकीर्षन्कर्म शत्रुभ्यो बाहुद्रव्यानुरूपतः ॥१३॥
13. bāhū viśālau kṛtvā tu tena bhīmo'pi gacchati ,
bāhū darśayamāno hi bāhudraviṇadarpitaḥ ,
cikīrṣankarma śatrubhyo bāhudravyānurūpataḥ.
13. bāhū viśālau kṛtvā tu tena bhīmaḥ
api gacchati bāhū darśayamānaḥ hi
bāhudraviṇadarpitaḥ cikīrṣan
karma śatrubhyaḥ bāhudravyānurūpataḥ
13. Indeed, Bhīma proceeds, spreading wide his mighty arms, displaying them, proud of the strength of his arms, and wishing to perform deeds against his enemies in a manner befitting the power of his arms.
प्रदिशञ्शरसंपातान्कुन्तीपुत्रोऽर्जुनस्तदा ।
सिकता वपन्सव्यसाची राजानमनुगच्छति ॥१४॥
14. pradiśañśarasaṁpātānkuntīputro'rjunastadā ,
sikatā vapansavyasācī rājānamanugacchati.
14. pradiśan śarasaṃpātān kuntīputraḥ arjunaḥ tadā
sikatā vapan savyasācī rājānam anugacchati
14. Then, Arjuna (Kuntīputra), the ambidextrous one (Savyasācī), follows the king, demonstrating volleys of arrows and scattering sand.
असक्ताः सिकतास्तस्य यथा संप्रति भारत ।
असक्तं शरवर्षाणि तथा मोक्ष्यति शत्रुषु ॥१५॥
15. asaktāḥ sikatāstasya yathā saṁprati bhārata ,
asaktaṁ śaravarṣāṇi tathā mokṣyati śatruṣu.
15. asaktāḥ sikatāḥ tasya yathā saṃprati bhārata
asaktaṃ śaravarṣāṇi tathā mokṣyati śatruṣu
15. Just as grains of sand do not cling to him, O Bhārata, similarly, he will discharge showers of arrows upon his enemies without attachment (asakta).
न मे कश्चिद्विजानीयान्मुखमद्येति भारत ।
मुखमालिप्य तेनासौ सहदेवोऽपि गच्छति ॥१६॥
16. na me kaścidvijānīyānmukhamadyeti bhārata ,
mukhamālipya tenāsau sahadevo'pi gacchati.
16. na me kaścit vijānīyāt mukham adya iti bhārata
mukham ālipya tena asau sahadevaḥ api gacchati
16. "Let no one recognize my face today, O Bhārata." Having smeared his face with that, even Sahadeva goes (forth).
नाहं मनांस्याददेयं मार्गे स्त्रीणामिति प्रभो ।
पांसूपचितसर्वाङ्गो नकुलस्तेन गच्छति ॥१७॥
17. nāhaṁ manāṁsyādadeyaṁ mārge strīṇāmiti prabho ,
pāṁsūpacitasarvāṅgo nakulastena gacchati.
17. na aham manāṃsi ādadeyam mārge strīṇām iti prabho
pāṃsūpacitasarvāṅgaḥ nakulaḥ tena gacchati
17. "I would not win the hearts of women on the path, O Lord!"—with his entire body covered in dust, Nakula goes (forth) in that (manner).
एकवस्त्रा तु रुदती मुक्तकेशी रजस्वला ।
शोणिताक्तार्द्रवसना द्रौपदी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. ekavastrā tu rudatī muktakeśī rajasvalā ,
śoṇitāktārdravasanā draupadī vākyamabravīt.
18. ekavastrā tu rudatī muktakeśī rajasvalā
śoṇitāktārdravasanā draupadī vākyam abravīt
18. But Draupadi, clad in a single garment, weeping, with disheveled hair, menstruating, and with her clothes wet and stained with blood, spoke these words.
यत्कृतेऽहमिमां प्राप्ता तेषां वर्षे चतुर्दशे ।
हतपत्यो हतसुता हतबन्धुजनप्रियाः ॥१९॥
19. yatkṛte'hamimāṁ prāptā teṣāṁ varṣe caturdaśe ,
hatapatyo hatasutā hatabandhujanapriyāḥ.
19. yat kṛte aham imām prāptā teṣām varṣe caturdaśe
hatapatyaḥ hatasutāḥ hatabandhujanapriyāḥ
19. For whose sake I have reached this state (of distress), in their fourteenth year, those women whose husbands are slain, whose sons are slain, and whose dear kinsmen are slain,
बन्धुशोणितदिग्धाङ्ग्यो मुक्तकेश्यो रजस्वलाः ।
एवं कृतोदका नार्यः प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति गजाह्वयम् ॥२०॥
20. bandhuśoṇitadigdhāṅgyo muktakeśyo rajasvalāḥ ,
evaṁ kṛtodakā nāryaḥ pravekṣyanti gajāhvayam.
20. bandhuśoṇitadigdhāṅgyaḥ muktakeśyaḥ rajasvalāḥ
evam kṛtodakāḥ nāryaḥ pravekṣyanti gajāhvayam
20. Thus, the women, whose bodies are smeared with the blood of their kinsmen, with unbound hair, and appearing as if in a state of ritual impurity, after performing the water oblation for the dead, will enter Hastinapura.
कृत्वा तु नैरृतान्दर्भान्धीरो धौम्यः पुरोहितः ।
सामानि गायन्याम्यानि पुरतो याति भारत ॥२१॥
21. kṛtvā tu nairṛtāndarbhāndhīro dhaumyaḥ purohitaḥ ,
sāmāni gāyanyāmyāni purato yāti bhārata.
21. kṛtvā tu nairṛtān darbān dhīraḥ dhaumyaḥ purohitaḥ
sāmāni gāyan yāmyāni purataḥ yāti bhārata
21. But, O Bhārata, the resolute priest Dhaumya, having arranged the kusha grass towards the direction of the demons (nirṛta), proceeds in front, singing the mournful (yāmya) Sāman chants.
हतेषु भारतेष्वाजौ कुरूणां गुरवस्तदा ।
एवं सामानि गास्यन्तीत्युक्त्वा धौम्योऽपि गच्छति ॥२२॥
22. hateṣu bhārateṣvājau kurūṇāṁ guravastadā ,
evaṁ sāmāni gāsyantītyuktvā dhaumyo'pi gacchati.
22. hateṣu bhārateṣu ājau kurūṇām guravaḥ tadā evam
sāmāni gāsyanti iti uktvā dhaumyaḥ api gacchati
22. 'Then, when the Bhāratas are slain in battle, the elders (guru) of the Kurus will thus chant the Sāman hymns.' Having spoken thus, Dhaumya also departs.
हा हा गच्छन्ति नो नाथाः समवेक्षध्वमीदृशम् ।
इति पौराः सुदुःखार्ताः क्रोशन्ति स्म समन्ततः ॥२३॥
23. hā hā gacchanti no nāthāḥ samavekṣadhvamīdṛśam ,
iti paurāḥ suduḥkhārtāḥ krośanti sma samantataḥ.
23. hā hā gacchanti naḥ nāthāḥ samavekṣadhvam īdṛśam
iti paurāḥ suduḥkhārtāḥ krośanti sma samantataḥ
23. "Oh no, our protectors are departing! Witness this tragic situation!" Thus, the citizens, deeply distressed, cried out from all sides.
एवमाकारलिङ्गैस्ते व्यवसायं मनोगतम् ।
कथयन्तः स्म कौन्तेया वनं जग्मुर्मनस्विनः ॥२४॥
24. evamākāraliṅgaiste vyavasāyaṁ manogatam ,
kathayantaḥ sma kaunteyā vanaṁ jagmurmanasvinaḥ.
24. evam ākāra-liṅgaiḥ te vyavasāyam manogatam
kathayantaḥ sma kaunteyā vanam jagmuḥ manasvinaḥ
24. The resolute (manasvin) sons of Kunti (Kaunteyā), indicating their inner resolve through such gestures and signs, went to the forest.
एवं तेषु नराग्र्येषु निर्यत्सु गजसाह्वयात् ।
अनभ्रे विद्युतश्चासन्भूमिश्च समकम्पत ॥२५॥
25. evaṁ teṣu narāgryeṣu niryatsu gajasāhvayāt ,
anabhre vidyutaścāsanbhūmiśca samakampata.
25. evam teṣu narāgryeṣu niryatsu gajasāhvayāt
anabhre vidyutaḥ ca āsan bhūmiḥ ca samakampata
25. Thus, as those foremost among men departed from Hastinapura, lightning flashed in a cloudless sky, and the earth trembled.
राहुरग्रसदादित्यमपर्वणि विशां पते ।
उल्का चाप्यपसव्यं तु पुरं कृत्वा व्यशीर्यत ॥२६॥
26. rāhuragrasadādityamaparvaṇi viśāṁ pate ,
ulkā cāpyapasavyaṁ tu puraṁ kṛtvā vyaśīryata.
26. rāhuḥ agrasat ādityam aparvaṇi viśām pate ulkā
ca api apasavyam tu puram kṛtvā vyaśīryata
26. O lord of the people, Rahu eclipsed the sun at an unpropitious time. And a meteor, having circled the city ominously (apasavya) from the right, then shattered.
प्रव्याहरन्ति क्रव्यादा गृध्रगोमायुवायसाः ।
देवायतनचैत्येषु प्राकाराट्टालकेषु च ॥२७॥
27. pravyāharanti kravyādā gṛdhragomāyuvāyasāḥ ,
devāyatanacaityeṣu prākārāṭṭālakeṣu ca.
27. pravyāharanti kravyādāḥ gṛdhragomāyuvāyasāḥ
devāyatanacaityeṣu prākārāṭṭālakeṣu ca
27. Flesh-eating vultures, jackals, and crows shriek loudly in temples, sacred enclosures, ramparts, and watchtowers.
एवमेते महोत्पाता वनं गच्छति पाण्डवे ।
भारतानामभावाय राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥२८॥
28. evamete mahotpātā vanaṁ gacchati pāṇḍave ,
bhāratānāmabhāvāya rājandurmantrite tava.
28. evam ete mahotpātāḥ vanam gacchati pāṇḍave
bhāratānām abhāvāya rājan durmantrite tava
28. O King, these great omens (utpāta) manifest in this way for the destruction of the Bharatas, due to your evil counsel, as the Pandava (Yudhishthira) goes to the forest.
नारदश्च सभामध्ये कुरूणामग्रतः स्थितः ।
महर्षिभिः परिवृतो रौद्रं वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥२९॥
29. nāradaśca sabhāmadhye kurūṇāmagrataḥ sthitaḥ ,
maharṣibhiḥ parivṛto raudraṁ vākyamuvāca ha.
29. nāradaḥ ca sabhāmadhye kurūṇām agrataḥ sthitaḥ
maharṣibhiḥ parivṛtaḥ raudram vākyam uvāca ha
29. And Narada, surrounded by great sages (ṛṣi), stood before the Kurus in the midst of the assembly and indeed spoke terrible words.
इतश्चतुर्दशे वर्षे विनङ्क्ष्यन्तीह कौरवाः ।
दुर्योधनापराधेन भीमार्जुनबलेन च ॥३०॥
30. itaścaturdaśe varṣe vinaṅkṣyantīha kauravāḥ ,
duryodhanāparādhena bhīmārjunabalena ca.
30. itaḥ caturdaśe varṣe vinaṅkṣyanti iha kauravāḥ
duryodhanāparādhena bhīmārjunabalena ca
30. From now, in the fourteenth year, the Kauravas will perish in this world due to Duryodhana's offense and the might of Bhima and Arjuna.
इत्युक्त्वा दिवमाक्रम्य क्षिप्रमन्तरधीयत ।
ब्राह्मीं श्रियं सुविपुलां बिभ्रद्देवर्षिसत्तमः ॥३१॥
31. ityuktvā divamākramya kṣipramantaradhīyata ,
brāhmīṁ śriyaṁ suvipulāṁ bibhraddevarṣisattamaḥ.
31. iti uktvā divam ākramya kṣipram antaradhīyata
brāhmīm śriyam suvipulām bibhrat devarṣisattamaḥ
31. Having thus spoken, the foremost among the divine sages (devarṣi), bearing immense divine (brāhmī) splendor, quickly ascended to the sky and disappeared.
ततो दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
द्रोणं द्वीपममन्यन्त राज्यं चास्मै न्यवेदयन् ॥३२॥
32. tato duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
droṇaṁ dvīpamamanyanta rājyaṁ cāsmai nyavedayan.
32. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
droṇam dvīpam amanyanta rājyam ca asmai nyavedayan
32. Then Duryodhana, Karṇa, and also Śakuni, the son of Subala, regarded Droṇa as their refuge (dvīpa) and offered the kingdom to him.
अथाब्रवीत्ततो द्रोणो दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ।
दुःशासनं च कर्णं च सर्वानेव च भारतान् ॥३३॥
33. athābravīttato droṇo duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ,
duḥśāsanaṁ ca karṇaṁ ca sarvāneva ca bhāratān.
33. atha abravīt tataḥ droṇaḥ duryodhanam amarṣaṇam
duḥśāsanam ca karṇam ca sarvān eva ca bhāratān
33. Then Droṇa spoke to the impatient Duryodhana, and to Duḥśāsana, and to Karṇa, and indeed to all the Bhāratas (Kauravas).
अवध्यान्पाण्डवानाहुर्देवपुत्रान्द्विजातयः ।
अहं तु शरणं प्राप्तान्वर्तमानो यथाबलम् ॥३४॥
34. avadhyānpāṇḍavānāhurdevaputrāndvijātayaḥ ,
ahaṁ tu śaraṇaṁ prāptānvartamāno yathābalam.
34. avadhyān pāṇḍavān āhuḥ devaputrān dvijātayaḥ
aham tu śaraṇam prāptān vartamānaḥ yathābalam
34. The twice-born ones (dvijāti) declare the Pāṇḍavas, as sons of gods, to be inviolable. But I, acting to the best of my ability, will protect those who seek refuge (śaraṇa).
गतान्सर्वात्मना भक्त्या धार्तराष्ट्रान्सराजकान् ।
नोत्सहे समभित्यक्तुं दैवमूलमतः परम् ॥३५॥
35. gatānsarvātmanā bhaktyā dhārtarāṣṭrānsarājakān ,
notsahe samabhityaktuṁ daivamūlamataḥ param.
35. gatān sarvātmanā bhaktyā dhārtarāṣṭrān sarājakān
na utsahe samabhityaktum daivamūlam ataḥ param
35. I cannot bring myself to completely abandon the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, along with their rulers, who have approached (me) with complete devotion (bhakti). What lies beyond this is rooted in divine will.
धर्मतः पाण्डुपुत्रा वै वनं गच्छन्ति निर्जिताः ।
ते च द्वादश वर्षाणि वने वत्स्यन्ति कौरवाः ॥३६॥
36. dharmataḥ pāṇḍuputrā vai vanaṁ gacchanti nirjitāḥ ,
te ca dvādaśa varṣāṇi vane vatsyanti kauravāḥ.
36. dharmataḥ pāṇḍuputrā vai vanam gacchanti nirjitāḥ
te ca dvādaśa varṣāṇi vane vatsyanti kauravāḥ
36. Indeed, by natural law (dharma), the sons of Pāṇḍu, though defeated, are going to the forest. And they, the Kauravas (Pāṇḍavas), will dwell in the forest for twelve years.
चरितब्रह्मचर्याश्च क्रोधामर्षवशानुगाः ।
वैरं प्रत्यानयिष्यन्ति मम दुःखाय पाण्डवाः ॥३७॥
37. caritabrahmacaryāśca krodhāmarṣavaśānugāḥ ,
vairaṁ pratyānayiṣyanti mama duḥkhāya pāṇḍavāḥ.

vairam pratyānayiṣyanti mama duḥkhāya pāṇḍavāḥ
37. And the Pāṇḍavas, having observed their spiritual discipline (brahmacarya) and now governed by anger and resentment, will retaliate (lit. bring back enmity), which will cause me sorrow.
मया तु भ्रंशितो राज्याद्द्रुपदः सखिविग्रहे ।
पुत्रार्थमयजत्क्रोधाद्वधाय मम भारत ॥३८॥
38. mayā tu bhraṁśito rājyāddrupadaḥ sakhivigrahe ,
putrārthamayajatkrodhādvadhāya mama bhārata.

38. But, O Bhārata, Drupada, whom I had deprived of his kingdom due to a quarrel between friends, then out of anger performed a Vedic ritual (yajña) to obtain a son for my destruction.
याजोपयाजतपसा पुत्रं लेभे स पावकात् ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं द्रौपदीं च वेदीमध्यात्सुमध्यमाम् ॥३९॥
39. yājopayājatapasā putraṁ lebhe sa pāvakāt ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ draupadīṁ ca vedīmadhyātsumadhyamām.

39. He obtained a son, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and the slender-waisted Draupadī from the sacrificial fire, emerging from the middle of the altar, due to the austerities (tapas) performed by Yaja and Upayaja.
ज्वालावर्णो देवदत्तो धनुष्मान्कवची शरी ।
मर्त्यधर्मतया तस्मादिति मां भयमाविशत् ॥४०॥
40. jvālāvarṇo devadatto dhanuṣmānkavacī śarī ,
martyadharmatayā tasmāditi māṁ bhayamāviśat.
40. jvālāvarṇaḥ devadattaḥ dhanuṣmān kavacī śarī
martyadharmatayā tasmāt iti mām bhayam āviśat
40. That divinely-endowed (devadatta) warrior, with a flame-like radiance, armed with a bow, clad in armor, and equipped with arrows—from him, fear (bhaya) thus assailed me, owing to the inherent nature (dharma) of mortals.
गतो हि पक्षतां तेषां पार्षतः पुरुषर्षभः ।
सृष्टप्राणो भृशतरं तस्माद्योत्स्ये तवारिभिः ॥४१॥
41. gato hi pakṣatāṁ teṣāṁ pārṣataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
sṛṣṭaprāṇo bhṛśataraṁ tasmādyotsye tavāribhiḥ.
41. gataḥ hi pakṣatām teṣām pārṣataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ
sṛṣṭaprāṇaḥ bhṛśataram tasmāt yotsye tava aribhiḥ
41. Indeed, that Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), the best among men (puruṣarṣabha), has sided with them, created with an abundance of life. Therefore, I shall fight your enemies.
मद्वधाय श्रुतो ह्येष लोके चाप्यतिविश्रुतः ।
नूनं सोऽयमनुप्राप्तस्त्वत्कृते कालपर्ययः ॥४२॥
42. madvadhāya śruto hyeṣa loke cāpyativiśrutaḥ ,
nūnaṁ so'yamanuprāptastvatkṛte kālaparyayaḥ.
42. mad-vadhāya śrutaḥ hi eṣaḥ loke ca api ativisrutaḥ
nūnam saḥ ayam anuprāptaḥ tvat-kṛte kālaparyayaḥ
42. Indeed, this (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) is renowned and very well-known in the world for my destruction. Surely, this destined turn of time (kālaparyaya) has now arrived on your behalf.
त्वरिताः कुरुत श्रेयो नैतदेतावता कृतम् ।
मुहूर्तं सुखमेवैतत्तालच्छायेव हैमनी ॥४३॥
43. tvaritāḥ kuruta śreyo naitadetāvatā kṛtam ,
muhūrtaṁ sukhamevaitattālacchāyeva haimanī.
43. tvaritāḥ kuruta śreyaḥ na etat etāvatā kṛtam
muhūrtaṃ sukham eva etat tāla-cchāyā iva haimanī
43. Quickly strive for the ultimate good (śreyaḥ)! This much is not enough. This happiness is merely momentary, like the shade of a palm tree in winter.
यजध्वं च महायज्ञैर्भोगानश्नीत दत्त च ।
इतश्चतुर्दशे वर्षे महत्प्राप्स्यथ वैशसम् ॥४४॥
44. yajadhvaṁ ca mahāyajñairbhogānaśnīta datta ca ,
itaścaturdaśe varṣe mahatprāpsyatha vaiśasam.
44. yajadhvaṃ ca mahā-yajñaiḥ bhogān aśnīta datta ca
itaḥ caturdaśe varṣe mahat prāpsyatha vaiśasam
44. And perform great sacrifices (yajñas), enjoy pleasures, and give [charity]! From now, in the fourteenth year, you will experience a great catastrophe.
दुर्योधन निशम्यैतत्प्रतिपद्य यथेच्छसि ।
साम वा पाण्डवेयेषु प्रयुङ्क्ष्व यदि मन्यसे ॥४५॥
45. duryodhana niśamyaitatpratipadya yathecchasi ,
sāma vā pāṇḍaveyeṣu prayuṅkṣva yadi manyase.
45. duryodhana niśamya etat pratipadya yathā icchasi
sāma vā pāṇḍaveyeṣu prayuṅkṣva yadi manyase
45. O Duryodhana, having heard this, you may act as you wish. Or, if you deem it proper, employ conciliation (sāma) towards the Pāṇḍavas.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
द्रोणस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ।
सम्यगाह गुरुः क्षत्तरुपावर्तय पाण्डवान् ॥४६॥
46. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
droṇasya vacanaṁ śrutvā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravīdidam ,
samyagāha guruḥ kṣattarupāvartaya pāṇḍavān.
46. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca droṇasya vacanaṃ śrutvā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
abravīt idam samyak āha guruḥ kṣattaḥ upāvartaya pāṇḍavān
46. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having heard Droṇa's words, Dhṛtarāṣṭra then said this: 'The preceptor (guru) has spoken well, O charioteer (kṣatta)! Bring back the Pāṇḍavas.'
यदि वा न निवर्तन्ते सत्कृता यान्तु पाण्डवाः ।
सशस्त्ररथपादाता भोगवन्तश्च पुत्रकाः ॥४७॥
47. yadi vā na nivartante satkṛtā yāntu pāṇḍavāḥ ,
saśastrarathapādātā bhogavantaśca putrakāḥ.
47. yadi vā na nivartante satkṛtāḥ yāntu pāṇḍavāḥ
| saśastrarathapādātāḥ bhogavantaḥ ca putrakāḥ
47. If, however, the Pāṇḍavas do not return after being honored, then let them go [their own way]. And your sons (the Kauravas) are prosperous, possessing weapons, chariots, and foot soldiers.
