व्यास उवाच ।
शुभेन कर्मणा यद्वै तिर्यग्योनौ न मुह्यसे ।
ममैव कीट तत्कर्म येन त्वं न प्रमुह्यसे ॥१॥
1. vyāsa uvāca ,
śubhena karmaṇā yadvai tiryagyonau na muhyase ,
mamaiva kīṭa tatkarma yena tvaṁ na pramuhyase.

1. Vyāsa said: "Indeed, it is by good action (karma) that you are not deluded even in an animal birth. O insect! That action (karma) is indeed mine, by which you are not utterly bewildered."
अहं हि दर्शनादेव तारयामि तपोबलात् ।
तपोबलाद्धि बलवद्बलमन्यन्न विद्यते ॥२॥
2. ahaṁ hi darśanādeva tārayāmi tapobalāt ,
tapobalāddhi balavadbalamanyanna vidyate.
2. aham hi darśanāt eva tārayāmi tapobalāt |
tapobalāt hi balavat balam anyat na vidyate
2. aham hi tapobalāt darśanāt eva tārayāmi hi
tapobalāt balavat anyat balam na vidyate
2. Indeed, I liberate merely by a glance, through the power of my ascetic practices (tapas). For, truly, no other strength is found to be more potent than the power of asceticism (tapas).
जानामि पापैः स्वकृतैर्गतं त्वां कीट कीटताम् ।
अवाप्स्यसि परं धर्मं धर्मस्थो यदि मन्यसे ॥३॥
3. jānāmi pāpaiḥ svakṛtairgataṁ tvāṁ kīṭa kīṭatām ,
avāpsyasi paraṁ dharmaṁ dharmastho yadi manyase.
3. jānāmi pāpaiḥ svakṛtaiḥ gatam tvām kīṭa kīṭatām |
avāpsyasi param dharmam dharmasthaḥ yadi manyase
3. kīṭa,
aham jānāmi tvām svakṛtaiḥ pāpaiḥ kīṭatām gatam yadi dharmasthaḥ manyase,
param dharmam avāpsyasi
3. O insect, I know that you have been reduced to the state of an insect due to your own misdeeds. You will attain the highest intrinsic nature (dharma) if you consider yourself to be established in your constitution (dharma).
कर्म भूमिकृतं देवा भुञ्जते तिर्यगाश्च ये ।
धर्मादपि मनुष्येषु कामोऽर्थश्च यथा गुणैः ॥४॥
4. karma bhūmikṛtaṁ devā bhuñjate tiryagāśca ye ,
dharmādapi manuṣyeṣu kāmo'rthaśca yathā guṇaiḥ.
4. karma bhūmikṛtam devā bhuñjate tiryagāḥ ca ye |
dharmāt api manuṣyeṣu kāmaḥ arthaḥ ca yathā guṇaiḥ
4. ye devāḥ ca tiryagāḥ,
bhūmikṛtam karma bhuñjate api manuṣyeṣu kāmaḥ ca arthaḥ ca yathā guṇaiḥ,
dharmāt api (labhyate)
4. Gods and even animals (tiryak) experience the actions (karma) performed on earth. Similarly, among humans, desire and material prosperity (artha) are obtained according to their qualities, even from natural law (dharma).
वाग्बुद्धिपाणिपादैश्चाप्युपेतस्य विपश्चितः ।
किं हीयते मनुष्यस्य मन्दस्यापि हि जीवतः ॥५॥
5. vāgbuddhipāṇipādaiścāpyupetasya vipaścitaḥ ,
kiṁ hīyate manuṣyasya mandasyāpi hi jīvataḥ.
5. vāgbuddhipāṇipādaiḥ ca api upetasya vipascitaḥ
| kim hīyate manuṣyasya mandasya api hi jīvataḥ
5. vāgbuddhipāṇipādaiḥ ca api upetasya vipascitaḥ hi kim
hīyate api mandasya jīvataḥ manuṣyasya hi kim hīyate
5. What, indeed, is lost to a discerning person who is endowed with speech, intellect, hands, and feet? And what, indeed, is lost to a human being, even a dull-witted one, who is merely alive?
जीवन्हि कुरुते पूजां विप्राग्र्यः शशिसूर्ययोः ।
ब्रुवन्नपि कथां पुण्यां तत्र कीट त्वमेष्यसि ॥६॥
6. jīvanhi kurute pūjāṁ viprāgryaḥ śaśisūryayoḥ ,
bruvannapi kathāṁ puṇyāṁ tatra kīṭa tvameṣyasi.
6. jīvan hi kurute pūjām viprāgryaḥ śaśisūryayoḥ
bruvan api kathām puṇyām tatra kīṭa tvam eṣyasi
6. jīvan hi viprāgryaḥ śaśisūryayoḥ pūjām kurute api
puṇyām kathām bruvan tatra he kīṭa tvam eṣyasi
6. Indeed, while living, the foremost brahmin performs the worship of the moon and the sun. Even as he narrates a sacred story, there, O worm, you will come (or attain that state).
गुणभूतानि भूतानि तत्र त्वमुपभोक्ष्यसे ।
तत्र तेऽहं विनेष्यामि ब्रह्मत्वं यत्र चेच्छसि ॥७॥
7. guṇabhūtāni bhūtāni tatra tvamupabhokṣyase ,
tatra te'haṁ vineṣyāmi brahmatvaṁ yatra cecchasi.
7. guṇabhūtāni bhūtāni tatra tvam upabhokṣyase tatra
te aham vineṣyāmi brahmatvam yatra ca icchasi
7. tatra tvam guṇabhūtāni bhūtāni upabhokṣyase tatra
ca yatra icchasi te aham brahmatvam vineṣyāmi
7. There you will enjoy beings that are subordinate. There, I will instruct you in brahminhood (brahman), wherever you desire.
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य कीटो वर्त्मन्यतिष्ठत ।
तमृषिं द्रष्टुमगमत्सर्वास्वन्यासु योनिषु ॥८॥
8. sa tatheti pratiśrutya kīṭo vartmanyatiṣṭhata ,
tamṛṣiṁ draṣṭumagamatsarvāsvanyāsu yoniṣu.
8. saḥ tathā iti pratiśrutya kīṭaḥ vartmani atiṣṭhata
tam ṛṣim draṣṭum agamat sarvāsu anyāsu yoniṣu
8. saḥ kīṭaḥ tathā iti pratiśrutya vartmani atiṣṭhata
tam ṛṣim draṣṭum sarvāsu anyāsu yoniṣu agamat
8. He, the worm, having assented, saying 'so be it', remained on the path. He went to see that sage through all other species of birth.
श्वाविद्गोधावराहाणां तथैव मृगपक्षिणाम् ।
श्वपाकवैश्यशूद्राणां क्षत्रियाणां च योनिषु ॥९॥
9. śvāvidgodhāvarāhāṇāṁ tathaiva mṛgapakṣiṇām ,
śvapākavaiśyaśūdrāṇāṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ ca yoniṣu.
9. śvāvidgodhāvarāhāṇām tathā eva mṛgapakṣiṇām
śvapākavaiśyaśūdrāṇām kṣatriyāṇām ca yoniṣu
9. śvāvidgodhāvarāhāṇām tathā eva mṛgapakṣiṇām
śvapākavaiśyaśūdrāṇām kṣatriyāṇām ca yoniṣu
9. In the species of porcupines, iguanas, and boars, and similarly of deer and birds, and also of dog-eaters, vaiśyas, śūdras, and kṣatriyas.
स कीटेत्येवमाभाष्य ऋषिणा सत्यवादिना ।
प्रतिस्मृत्याथ जग्राह पादौ मूर्ध्ना कृताञ्जलिः ॥१०॥
10. sa kīṭetyevamābhāṣya ṛṣiṇā satyavādinā ,
pratismṛtyātha jagrāha pādau mūrdhnā kṛtāñjaliḥ.
10. sa kīṭa iti evam ābhāṣya ṛṣiṇā satyavādinā
pratismṛtya atha jagrāha pādau mūrdhnā kṛtāñjaliḥ
10. sa satyavādinā ṛṣiṇā kīṭa iti evam ābhāṣya atha
pratismṛtya kṛtāñjaliḥ mūrdhnā pādau jagrāha
10. Addressed thus as 'insect' by the truth-telling sage, he then remembered his past, and with folded hands, grasped the sage's feet with his head.
कीट उवाच ।
इदं तदतुलं स्थानमीप्सितं दशभिर्गुणैः ।
यदहं प्राप्य कीटत्वमागतो राजपुत्रताम् ॥११॥
11. kīṭa uvāca ,
idaṁ tadatulaṁ sthānamīpsitaṁ daśabhirguṇaiḥ ,
yadahaṁ prāpya kīṭatvamāgato rājaputratām.
11. kīṭa uvāca idam tat atulam sthānam īpsitam daśabhiḥ
guṇaiḥ yat aham prāpya kīṭatvam āgataḥ rājaputratām
11. kīṭaḥ uvāca idam tat atulam sthānam daśabhiḥ guṇaiḥ
īpsitam yat aham prāpya kīṭatvam rājaputratām āgataḥ
11. The insect said: 'This is that incomparable status, desirable through ten virtues, which I have attained, having transitioned from an insect's existence to princely status.'
वहन्ति मामतिबलाः कुञ्जरा हेममालिनः ।
स्यन्दनेषु च काम्बोजा युक्ताः परमवाजिनः ॥१२॥
12. vahanti māmatibalāḥ kuñjarā hemamālinaḥ ,
syandaneṣu ca kāmbojā yuktāḥ paramavājinaḥ.
12. vahanti mām atibalāḥ kuñjarāḥ hemamālinaḥ
syandaneṣu ca kāmbojāḥ yuktāḥ paramavājinaḥ
12. atibalāḥ hemamālinaḥ kuñjarāḥ mām vahanti ca
syandaneṣu yuktāḥ paramavājinaḥ kāmbojāḥ (mām vahanti)
12. Very powerful elephants, adorned with golden garlands, carry me. And in chariots, excellent horses from Kamboja are harnessed.
उष्ट्राश्वतरयुक्तानि यानानि च वहन्ति माम् ।
सबान्धवः सहामात्यश्चाश्नामि पिशितौदनम् ॥१३॥
13. uṣṭrāśvatarayuktāni yānāni ca vahanti mām ,
sabāndhavaḥ sahāmātyaścāśnāmi piśitaudanam.
13. uṣṭrāśvatarayuktāni yānāni ca vahanti mām
sabāndhavaḥ sahāmātyaḥ ca aśnāmi piśitōdanam
13. ca uṣṭrāśvatarayuktāni yānāni mām vahanti ca
sabāndhavaḥ sahāmātyaḥ (aham) piśitōdanam aśnāmi
13. Vehicles harnessed with camels and mules also carry me. Moreover, I eat meat and rice with my relatives and ministers.
गृहेषु सुनिवासेषु सुखेषु शयनेषु च ।
परार्ध्येषु महाभाग स्वपामीह सुपूजितः ॥१४॥
14. gṛheṣu sunivāseṣu sukheṣu śayaneṣu ca ,
parārdhyeṣu mahābhāga svapāmīha supūjitaḥ.
14. gṛheṣu sunivāseṣu sukheṣu śayaneṣu ca
parārdhyeṣu mahābhāga svapāmi iha supūjitaḥ
14. mahābhāga iha supūjitaḥ gṛheṣu sunivāseṣu
sukheṣu śayaneṣu ca parārdhyeṣu svapāmi
14. O greatly fortunate one, I sleep here, well-honored, in splendid dwellings and comfortable beds.
सर्वेष्वपररात्रेषु सूतमागधबन्दिनः ।
स्तुवन्ति मां यथा देवं महेन्द्रं प्रियवादिनः ॥१५॥
15. sarveṣvapararātreṣu sūtamāgadhabandinaḥ ,
stuvanti māṁ yathā devaṁ mahendraṁ priyavādinaḥ.
15. sarveṣu apararātreṣu sūtamāgadhabandinaḥ
stuvanti mām yathā devam mahendram priyavādinaḥ
15. sarveṣu apararātreṣu priyavādinaḥ sūtamāgadhabandinaḥ
mām stuvanti yathā devam mahendram
15. In the latter part of every night, bards, panegyrists, and eulogists praise me with pleasing words, just as they would praise the deity Mahendra.
प्रसादात्सत्यसंधस्य भवतोऽमिततेजसः ।
यदहं कीटतां प्राप्य संप्राप्तो राजपुत्रताम् ॥१६॥
16. prasādātsatyasaṁdhasya bhavato'mitatejasaḥ ,
yadahaṁ kīṭatāṁ prāpya saṁprāpto rājaputratām.
16. prasādāt satyasaṃdhasya bhavataḥ amitatejasaḥ
yat aham kīṭatām prāpya saṃprāptaḥ rājaputratām
16. satyasaṃdhasya amitatejasaḥ bhavataḥ prasādāt
yat aham kīṭatām prāpya rājaputratām saṃprāptaḥ
16. By the grace of you, who are truthful and of immeasurable splendor, I, having first obtained the state of an insect, have now achieved the status of a prince.
नमस्तेऽस्तु महाप्राज्ञ किं करोमि प्रशाधि माम् ।
त्वत्तपोबलनिर्दिष्टमिदं ह्यधिगतं मया ॥१७॥
17. namaste'stu mahāprājña kiṁ karomi praśādhi mām ,
tvattapobalanirdiṣṭamidaṁ hyadhigataṁ mayā.
17. namaste astu mahāprājña kim karomi praśādhi mām
tvattapobalanirdiṣṭam idam hi adhigatam mayā
17. mahāprājña namaste astu kim karomi mām praśādhi
hi idam mayā tvattapobalanirdiṣṭam adhigatam
17. Salutations to you, O greatly wise one! What should I do? Command me. Indeed, this has been obtained by me through the power of your asceticism (tapas).
व्यास उवाच ।
अर्चितोऽहं त्वया राजन्वाग्भिरद्य यदृच्छया ।
अद्य ते कीटतां प्राप्य स्मृतिर्जाताजुगुप्सिता ॥१८॥
18. vyāsa uvāca ,
arcito'haṁ tvayā rājanvāgbhiradya yadṛcchayā ,
adya te kīṭatāṁ prāpya smṛtirjātājugupsitā.
18. vyāsa uvāca arcitaḥ aham tvayā rājan vāgbhiḥ adya
yadṛcchayā adya te kīṭatām prāpya smṛtiḥ jātā ajugupsitā
18. vyāsa uvāca rājan tvayā adya yadṛcchayā vāgbhiḥ aham
arcitaḥ adya kīṭatām prāpya te smṛtiḥ ajugupsitā jātā
18. Vyāsa said: "O king, I have been worshipped by you today incidentally with words. Now, having attained the state of an insect, your memory has become clear."
न तु नाशोऽस्ति पापस्य यत्त्वयोपचितं पुरा ।
शूद्रेणार्थप्रधानेन नृशंसेनाततायिना ॥१९॥
19. na tu nāśo'sti pāpasya yattvayopacitaṁ purā ,
śūdreṇārthapradhānena nṛśaṁsenātatāyinā.
19. na tu nāśaḥ asti pāpasya yat tvayā upacitam purā
śūdreṇa arthapradhānena nṛśaṃsena ātatāyinā
19. tu pāpasya nāśaḥ na asti yat purā tvayā
arthapradhānena nṛśaṃsena ātatāyinā śūdreṇa upacitam
19. "But there is no destruction of the negative action (karma) which you accumulated previously. (This was accumulated) by a śūdra, who was primarily driven by wealth, cruel, and an aggressor."
मम ते दर्शनं प्राप्तं तच्चैव सुकृतं पुरा ।
तिर्यग्योनौ स्म जातेन मम चाप्यर्चनात्तथा ॥२०॥
20. mama te darśanaṁ prāptaṁ taccaiva sukṛtaṁ purā ,
tiryagyonau sma jātena mama cāpyarcanāttathā.
20. mama te darśanam prāptam tat ca eva sukṛtam purā
tiryakyonau sma jātena mama ca api arcanāt tathā
20. te mama darśanam prāptam tat sukṛtam ca eva purā
tiryakyonau jātena mama arcanāt ca api tathā
20. "You obtained my vision, and that merit (sukṛta) was accumulated by you previously. This (merit was accumulated) by one who was born in an animal existence (saṃsāra), and also through your worship of me."
इतस्त्वं राजपुत्रत्वाद्ब्राह्मण्यं समवाप्स्यसि ।
गोब्राह्मणकृते प्राणान्हुत्वात्मीयान्रणाजिरे ॥२१॥
21. itastvaṁ rājaputratvādbrāhmaṇyaṁ samavāpsyasi ,
gobrāhmaṇakṛte prāṇānhutvātmīyānraṇājire.
21. itaḥ tvam rājaputratvāt brāhmaṇyam samavāpsyasi
gobrāhmaṇakṛte prāṇān hutvā ātmīyān raṇājire
21. itaḥ tvam rājaputratvāt gobrāhmaṇakṛte ātmīyān
prāṇān raṇājire hutvā brāhmaṇyam samavāpsyasi
21. "Henceforth, because of your princely status, you will attain the state of a brahmin. (This will be achieved) by sacrificing your own lives for the sake of cows and brahmins on the battlefield."
राजपुत्रसुखं प्राप्य ऋतूंश्चैवाप्तदक्षिणान् ।
अथ मोदिष्यसे स्वर्गे ब्रह्मभूतोऽव्ययः सुखी ॥२२॥
22. rājaputrasukhaṁ prāpya ṛtūṁścaivāptadakṣiṇān ,
atha modiṣyase svarge brahmabhūto'vyayaḥ sukhī.
22. rājaputrasukham prāpya ṛtūn ca eva āptadakṣiṇān
atha modiṣyase svarge brahma-bhūtaḥ avyayaḥ sukhī
22. rājaputrasukham āptadakṣiṇān ṛtūn ca eva prāpya
atha svarge brahma-bhūtaḥ avyayaḥ sukhī modiṣyase
22. Having attained the happiness of a prince and performed Vedic rituals (ṛtūn) with proper offerings, you will then rejoice in heaven, having become one with the absolute reality (brahman), imperishable and happy.
तिर्यग्योन्याः शूद्रतामभ्युपैति शूद्रो वैश्यत्वं क्षत्रियत्वं च वैश्यः ।
वृत्तश्लाघी क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणत्वं स्वर्गं पुण्यं ब्राह्मणः साधुवृत्तः ॥२३॥
23. tiryagyonyāḥ śūdratāmabhyupaiti; śūdro vaiśyatvaṁ kṣatriyatvaṁ ca vaiśyaḥ ,
vṛttaślāghī kṣatriyo brāhmaṇatvaṁ; svargaṁ puṇyaṁ brāhmaṇaḥ sādhuvṛttaḥ.
23. tiryagyonyāḥ śūdratām abhyupaiti śūdraḥ
vaiśyatvam kṣatriyatvam ca vaiśyaḥ
vṛtta-ślāghī kṣatriyaḥ brāhmaṇatvam
svargam puṇyam brāhmaṇaḥ sādhu-vṛttaḥ
23. tiryagyonyāḥ śūdratām abhyupaiti śūdraḥ vaiśyatvam
abhyupaiti vaiśyaḥ kṣatriyatvam ca abhyupaiti
vṛtta-ślāghī kṣatriyaḥ brāhmaṇatvam abhyupaiti
sādhu-vṛttaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ puṇyam svargam abhyupaiti
23. One born from a lower species (tiryagyonyaḥ) attains the state of a śūdra. A śūdra attains the state of a vaiśya, and a vaiśya the state of a kṣatriya. A kṣatriya who praises good conduct attains the state of a brāhmaṇa. A brāhmaṇa of virtuous conduct attains meritorious heaven.
