युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
भीमसेन यमौ चोभौ पाञ्चालि च निबोधत ।
नास्ति भूतस्य नाशो वै पश्यतास्मान्वनेचरान् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
bhīmasena yamau cobhau pāñcāli ca nibodhata ,
nāsti bhūtasya nāśo vai paśyatāsmānvanecarān.

nibodhata na asti bhūtasya nāśaḥ vai paśyata asmān vanacarān
1. Yudhishthira said: Bhimasena, both the twins, and Draupadi, listen! Indeed, there is no destruction for any living being. Just look at us, living as wanderers in the forest.
दुर्बलाः क्लेशिताः स्मेति यद्ब्रवीथेतरेतरम् ।
अशक्येऽपि व्रजामेति धनंजयदिदृक्षया ॥२॥
2. durbalāḥ kleśitāḥ smeti yadbravīthetaretaram ,
aśakye'pi vrajāmeti dhanaṁjayadidṛkṣayā.
2. durbalāḥ kleśitāḥ sma iti yat bravītha itaretaram
aśakye api vrajāmaḥ iti dhanañjaya didṛkṣayā
2. You say to each other, "We are weak, we are afflicted." (Yet you also say,) "We will go, even to the impossible, out of the desire to see Dhananjaya (Arjuna)."
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि तूलराशिमिवानलः ।
यच्च वीरं न पश्यामि धनंजयमुपान्तिके ॥३॥
3. tanme dahati gātrāṇi tūlarāśimivānalaḥ ,
yacca vīraṁ na paśyāmi dhanaṁjayamupāntike.
3. tat me dahati gātrāṇi tūlarāśim iva analaḥ
yat ca vīram na paśyāmi dhanañjayam upāntike
3. That thought burns my limbs like fire consumes a pile of cotton. And the fact that I do not see the hero Dhananjaya (Arjuna) nearby also torments me.
तस्य दर्शनतृष्णं मां सानुजं वनमास्थितम् ।
याज्ञसेन्याः परामर्शः स च वीर दहत्युत ॥४॥
4. tasya darśanatṛṣṇaṁ māṁ sānujaṁ vanamāsthitam ,
yājñasenyāḥ parāmarśaḥ sa ca vīra dahatyuta.
4. tasya darśanatṛṣṇam mām sa-anujam vanam āsthitam
yājñsenyāḥ parāmarśaḥ saḥ ca vīra dahati uta
4. O hero, the lament of Yagnaseni (Draupadi) also truly burns me—me, who dwells in this forest with my younger brothers, filled with a strong desire to see him (Arjuna).
नकुलात्पूर्वजं पार्थं न पश्याम्यमितौजसम् ।
अजेयमुग्रधन्वानं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥५॥
5. nakulātpūrvajaṁ pārthaṁ na paśyāmyamitaujasam ,
ajeyamugradhanvānaṁ tena tapye vṛkodara.
5. nakulāt pūrvajam pārthaṃ na paśyāmi amitaujasam
ajeyam ugradhanvānam tena tapye vṛkodara
5. O Vṛkodara, I grieve because I do not see Pārtha (Arjuna), the elder brother of Nakula, who possesses immeasurable prowess (ojas) and is an unconquerable, fierce archer.
तीर्थानि चैव रम्याणि वनानि च सरांसि च ।
चरामि सह युष्माभिस्तस्य दर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥६॥
6. tīrthāni caiva ramyāṇi vanāni ca sarāṁsi ca ,
carāmi saha yuṣmābhistasya darśanakāṅkṣayā.
6. tīrthāni ca eva ramyāṇi vanāni ca sarāṃsi ca
carāmi saha yuṣmābhiḥ tasya darśanakāṅkṣayā
6. With you all, I wander through delightful holy places, forests, and lakes, solely with the longing to see him.
पञ्च वर्षाण्यहं वीरं सत्यसंधं धनंजयम् ।
यन्न पश्यामि बीभत्सुं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥७॥
7. pañca varṣāṇyahaṁ vīraṁ satyasaṁdhaṁ dhanaṁjayam ,
yanna paśyāmi bībhatsuṁ tena tapye vṛkodara.
7. pañca varṣāṇi aham vīram satyasaṃdham dhanaṃjayam
yat na paśyāmi bībhatsum tena tapye vṛkodara
7. O Vṛkodara, I grieve because for five years I have not seen the heroic Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), who is firm in truth (satyasaṃdha) and known as Bībhatsu.
तं वै श्यामं गुडाकेशं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम् ।
न पश्यामि महाबाहुं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥८॥
8. taṁ vai śyāmaṁ guḍākeśaṁ siṁhavikrāntagāminam ,
na paśyāmi mahābāhuṁ tena tapye vṛkodara.
8. tam vai śyāmam guḍākeśam siṃhavikrāntagāminam
na paśyāmi mahābāhum tena tapye vṛkodara
8. O Vṛkodara, I grieve because I do not see him—that dark-complexioned Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), who moves with the prowess of a lion and possesses mighty arms.
कृतास्त्रं निपुणं युद्धे प्रतिमानं धनुष्मताम् ।
न पश्यामि नरश्रेष्ठं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥९॥
9. kṛtāstraṁ nipuṇaṁ yuddhe pratimānaṁ dhanuṣmatām ,
na paśyāmi naraśreṣṭhaṁ tena tapye vṛkodara.
9. kṛtāstram nipuṇam yuddhe pratimānam dhanuṣmatām
na paśyāmi naraśreṣṭham tena tapye vṛkodara
9. O Vṛkodara, I grieve because I do not see that best among men, who is skilled in weaponry, expert in battle, and a match for all archers.
चरन्तमरिसंघेषु कालं क्रुद्धमिवान्तकम् ।
प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं सिंहस्कन्धं धनंजयम् ॥१०॥
10. carantamarisaṁgheṣu kālaṁ kruddhamivāntakam ,
prabhinnamiva mātaṅgaṁ siṁhaskandhaṁ dhanaṁjayam.
10. carantam arisaṃgheṣu kālam kruddham iva antakam
prabhinnam iva mātaṅgam siṃhaskandham dhanaṃjayam
10. I do not see Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), who moves among enemy hosts like an enraged god of death (Antaka), like an elephant in rut, and who has shoulders mighty as a lion's.
यः स शक्रादनवरो वीर्येण द्रविणेन च ।
यमयोः पूर्वजः पार्थः श्वेताश्वोऽमितविक्रमः ॥११॥
11. yaḥ sa śakrādanavaro vīryeṇa draviṇena ca ,
yamayoḥ pūrvajaḥ pārthaḥ śvetāśvo'mitavikramaḥ.
11. yaḥ saḥ śakrāt anavaraḥ vīryeṇa draviṇena ca
yamayoḥ pūrvajaḥ pārthaḥ śvetāśvaḥ amitavikramaḥ
11. I do not see that Pārtha (Arjuna)—he who is not inferior to Indra in valor and wealth, the elder brother of the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), the one with white horses (Śvetāśva), and of immeasurable prowess (amitavikrama).
दुःखेन महताविष्टः स्वकृतेनानिवर्तिना ।
अजेयमुग्रधन्वानं तं न पश्यामि फल्गुनम् ॥१२॥
12. duḥkhena mahatāviṣṭaḥ svakṛtenānivartinā ,
ajeyamugradhanvānaṁ taṁ na paśyāmi phalgunam.
12. duḥkhena mahatā āviṣṭaḥ svakṛtena anivartinā
ajeyam ugradhanvānam tam na paśyāmi phālgunam
12. Overcome by great and irreversible sorrow due to my own actions, I do not see that unconquerable Phalguna (Arjuna), who wields a formidable bow.
सततं यः क्षमाशीलः क्षिप्यमाणोऽप्यणीयसा ।
ऋजुमार्गप्रपन्नस्य शर्मदाताभयस्य च ॥१३॥
13. satataṁ yaḥ kṣamāśīlaḥ kṣipyamāṇo'pyaṇīyasā ,
ṛjumārgaprapannasya śarmadātābhayasya ca.
13. satataṃ yaḥ kṣamāśīlaḥ kṣipyamāṇaḥ api aṇīyasā
ṛjumārgaprapannasya śarmadātā abhayasya ca
13. He who is always patient, even when insulted by an insignificant person, grants happiness and protection to those who follow the righteous path.
स तु जिह्मप्रवृत्तस्य माययाभिजिघांसतः ।
अपि वज्रधरस्यापि भवेत्कालविषोपमः ॥१४॥
14. sa tu jihmapravṛttasya māyayābhijighāṁsataḥ ,
api vajradharasyāpi bhavetkālaviṣopamaḥ.
14. sa tu jihmapravṛttasya māyayā abhijighāṃsataḥ
api vajradharasya api bhavet kālaviṣopamaḥ
14. However, for one who acts deceitfully, desiring to harm with illusion (māyā), he can become like deadly poison, even to Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt.
शत्रोरपि प्रपन्नस्य सोऽनृशंसः प्रतापवान् ।
दाताभयस्य बीभत्सुरमितात्मा महाबलः ॥१५॥
15. śatrorapi prapannasya so'nṛśaṁsaḥ pratāpavān ,
dātābhayasya bībhatsuramitātmā mahābalaḥ.
15. śatroḥ api prapannasya saḥ anṛśaṃsaḥ pratāpavān
dātā abhayasya bībhatsuḥ amitātmā mahābalaḥ
15. Even for an enemy who has sought refuge, he is compassionate, glorious, a giver of protection, formidable (bībhatsu), great-souled (ātman), and immensely powerful.
सर्वेषामाश्रयोऽस्माकं रणेऽरीणां प्रमर्दिता ।
आहर्ता सर्वरत्नानां सर्वेषां नः सुखावहः ॥१६॥
16. sarveṣāmāśrayo'smākaṁ raṇe'rīṇāṁ pramarditā ,
āhartā sarvaratnānāṁ sarveṣāṁ naḥ sukhāvahaḥ.
16. sarveṣām āśrayaḥ asmākam raṇe arīṇām pramarditā
āhartā sarvaratnānām sarveṣām naḥ sukhāvahaḥ
16. He is a refuge for all of us, the vanquisher of enemies in battle, the one who acquires all treasures, and the bestower of happiness upon all of us.
रत्नानि यस्य वीर्येण दिव्यान्यासन्पुरा मम ।
बहूनि बहुजातानि यानि प्राप्तः सुयोधनः ॥१७॥
17. ratnāni yasya vīryeṇa divyānyāsanpurā mama ,
bahūni bahujātāni yāni prāptaḥ suyodhanaḥ.
17. ratnāni yasya vīryeṇa divyāni āsan purā mama
bahūni bahujātāni yāni prāptaḥ suyodhanaḥ
17. The many divine and abundant jewels that were once mine, acquired through his prowess (vīrya), Suyodhana has now obtained.
यस्य बाहुबलाद्वीर सभा चासीत्पुरा मम ।
सर्वरत्नमयी ख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु पाण्डव ॥१८॥
18. yasya bāhubalādvīra sabhā cāsītpurā mama ,
sarvaratnamayī khyātā triṣu lokeṣu pāṇḍava.
18. yasya bāhubalāt vīra sabhā ca āsīt purā mama
sarvaratnamayī khyātā triṣu lokeṣu pāṇḍava
18. O hero, through his might of arms, my assembly hall, which was renowned throughout the three worlds and adorned with all jewels, was also formerly mine, O Pāṇḍava.
वासुदेवसमं वीर्ये कार्तवीर्यसमं युधि ।
अजेयमजितं युद्धे तं न पश्यामि फल्गुनम् ॥१९॥
19. vāsudevasamaṁ vīrye kārtavīryasamaṁ yudhi ,
ajeyamajitaṁ yuddhe taṁ na paśyāmi phalgunam.
19. vāsudevasamam vīrye kārtavīryasamam yudhi
ajeyam ajitam yuddhe tam na paśyāmi phalgunam
19. I do not perceive that Phalguna (Arjuna) who is equal to Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) in prowess (vīrya), equal to Kārtavīrya in battle, and unconquerable and unconquered in war.
संकर्षणं महावीर्यं त्वां च भीमापराजितम् ।
अनुजातः स वीर्येण वासुदेवं च शत्रुहा ॥२०॥
20. saṁkarṣaṇaṁ mahāvīryaṁ tvāṁ ca bhīmāparājitam ,
anujātaḥ sa vīryeṇa vāsudevaṁ ca śatruhā.
20. saṅkarṣaṇam mahāvīryam tvām ca bhīmāparājitam
anujātaḥ sa vīryeṇa vāsudevam ca śatruhā
20. He (Arjuna), the slayer of enemies (śatruhā), in prowess (vīrya), resembles the greatly mighty Saṅkarṣaṇa, and also you (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), and Bhīma the unconquered, and Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa).
यस्य बाहुबले तुल्यः प्रभावे च पुरंदरः ।
जवे वायुर्मुखे सोमः क्रोधे मृत्युः सनातनः ॥२१॥
21. yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ prabhāve ca puraṁdaraḥ ,
jave vāyurmukhe somaḥ krodhe mṛtyuḥ sanātanaḥ.
21. yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ prabhāve ca purandaraḥ
jave vāyuḥ mukhe somaḥ krodhe mṛtyuḥ sanātanaḥ
21. Whose arm-strength and might are comparable to Indra's, whose swiftness is like Vayu's, whose speech is like Soma's, and whose wrath is eternal Death.
ते वयं तं नरव्याघ्रं सर्वे वीर दिदृक्षवः ।
प्रवेक्ष्यामो महाबाहो पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥२२॥
22. te vayaṁ taṁ naravyāghraṁ sarve vīra didṛkṣavaḥ ,
pravekṣyāmo mahābāho parvataṁ gandhamādanam.
22. te vayam tam naravyāghram sarve vīra didṛkṣavaḥ
pravekṣyāmaḥ mahābāho parvatam gandhamādanam
22. O hero, O mighty-armed one, all of us, eager to see that tiger among men (puruṣa), shall enter the Gandhamādana mountain.
विशाला बदरी यत्र नरनारायणाश्रमः ।
तं सदाध्युषितं यक्षैर्द्रक्ष्यामो गिरिमुत्तमम् ॥२३॥
23. viśālā badarī yatra naranārāyaṇāśramaḥ ,
taṁ sadādhyuṣitaṁ yakṣairdrakṣyāmo girimuttamam.
23. viśālā badarī yatra naranārāyaṇāśramaḥ tam
sadādhyuṣitam yakṣaiḥ drakṣyāmaḥ girim uttamam
23. We shall see that excellent mountain where the vast Badarī is, the hermitage (āśrama) of Nara-Nārāyaṇa, and which is always inhabited by Yakṣas.
कुबेरनलिनीं रम्यां राक्षसैरभिरक्षिताम् ।
पद्भिरेव गमिष्यामस्तप्यमाना महत्तपः ॥२४॥
24. kuberanalinīṁ ramyāṁ rākṣasairabhirakṣitām ,
padbhireva gamiṣyāmastapyamānā mahattapaḥ.
24. kuberanalinīm ramyām rākṣasaiḥ abhirakṣitām
padbhiḥ eva gamiṣyāmaḥ tapyamānāḥ mahattapaḥ
24. We shall travel on foot to Kubera's charming lotus pond/garden, which is guarded by Rākṣasas, as we perform great austerity (tapas).
नातप्ततपसा शक्यो देशो गन्तुं वृकोदर ।
न नृशंसेन लुब्धेन नाप्रशान्तेन भारत ॥२५॥
25. nātaptatapasā śakyo deśo gantuṁ vṛkodara ,
na nṛśaṁsena lubdhena nāpraśāntena bhārata.
25. na atapta-tapasā śakyaḥ deśaḥ gantum vṛkodara
| na nṛśaṃsena lubdhena na apraśāntena bhārata
25. O Vṛkodara, that region cannot be reached by one who has not performed severe austerities (tapas), nor by one who is cruel, greedy, or lacking self-control, O Bhārata.
तत्र सर्वे गमिष्यामो भीमार्जुनपदैषिणः ।
सायुधा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशाः सह विप्रैर्महाव्रतैः ॥२६॥
26. tatra sarve gamiṣyāmo bhīmārjunapadaiṣiṇaḥ ,
sāyudhā baddhanistriṁśāḥ saha viprairmahāvrataiḥ.
26. tatra sarve gamiṣyāmaḥ bhīmārjuna-padaiṣiṇaḥ |
sāyudhāḥ baddha-nistriṃśāḥ saha vipraiḥ mahāvratāḥ
26. There, all of us, eager to follow Bhīma and Arjuna, armed with weapons and with swords fastened, shall go, accompanied by Brahmins who have undertaken great vows.
मक्षिकान्मशकान्दंशान्व्याघ्रान्सिंहान्सरीसृपान् ।
प्राप्नोत्यनियतः पार्थ नियतस्तान्न पश्यति ॥२७॥
27. makṣikānmaśakāndaṁśānvyāghrānsiṁhānsarīsṛpān ,
prāpnotyaniyataḥ pārtha niyatastānna paśyati.
27. makṣikān maśakān daṃśān vyāghrān siṃhān sarīsṛpān
| prāpnoti aniyataḥ pārtha niyataḥ tān na paśyati
27. O Pārtha, an uncontrolled person encounters flies, mosquitoes, biting insects, tigers, lions, and reptiles; a self-controlled person does not perceive them.
ते वयं नियतात्मानः पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ।
प्रवेक्ष्यामो मिताहारा धनंजयदिदृक्षवः ॥२८॥
28. te vayaṁ niyatātmānaḥ parvataṁ gandhamādanam ,
pravekṣyāmo mitāhārā dhanaṁjayadidṛkṣavaḥ.
28. te vayam niyata-ātmānaḥ parvatam gandhamādanam
| pravekṣyāmaḥ mita-āhārāḥ dhanañjaya-didṛkṣavaḥ
28. We, with our selves (ātman) controlled, observing moderate eating, and desirous of seeing Dhanañjaya, shall enter the Gandhamādana mountain.
