संजय उवाच ।
सैन्धवे निहते राजन्पुत्रस्तव सुयोधनः ।
अश्रुक्लिन्नमुखो दीनो निरुत्साहो द्विषज्जये ।
अमन्यतार्जुनसमो योधो भुवि न विद्यते ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
saindhave nihate rājanputrastava suyodhanaḥ ,
aśruklinnamukho dīno nirutsāho dviṣajjaye ,
amanyatārjunasamo yodho bhuvi na vidyate.

tava putraḥ suyodhanaḥ aśruklinnamukhaḥ dīnaḥ dviṣajjaye nirutsāhaḥ (san) bhuvi arjunasamaḥ yodhaḥ na vidyate (iti) amanyata.
1. Sanjaya said: "O King, when Saindhava was killed, your son Duryodhana, with a face wet with tears, miserable and devoid of enthusiasm for conquering enemies, thought that there was no warrior on earth equal to Arjuna."
न द्रोणो न च राधेयो नाश्वत्थामा कृपो न च ।
क्रुद्धस्य प्रमुखे स्थातुं पर्याप्ता इति मारिष ॥२॥
2. na droṇo na ca rādheyo nāśvatthāmā kṛpo na ca ,
kruddhasya pramukhe sthātuṁ paryāptā iti māriṣa.
2. na droṇaḥ na ca rādheyaḥ na aśvatthāmā kṛpaḥ na ca
kruddhasya pramukhe sthātum paryāptāḥ iti māriṣa
2. (he (Duryodhana) thought) māriṣa,
kruddhasya (arjunasyā) pramukhe sthātum na droṇaḥ,
na ca rādheyaḥ,
na aśvatthāmā,
na ca kṛpaḥ paryāptāḥ (santi) iti.
2. Neither Droṇa, nor Rādeya (Karṇa), nor Aśvatthāmā, nor Kṛpa are capable of standing before Arjuna when he is enraged, O revered sir.
निर्जित्य हि रणे पार्थः सर्वान्मम महारथान् ।
अवधीत्सैन्धवं संख्ये नैनं कश्चिदवारयत् ॥३॥
3. nirjitya hi raṇe pārthaḥ sarvānmama mahārathān ,
avadhītsaindhavaṁ saṁkhye nainaṁ kaścidavārayat.
3. nirjitya hi raṇe pārthaḥ sarvān mama mahārathān
avadhīt saindhavam saṅkhye na enam kaścit avārayat
3. hi,
pārthaḥ raṇe mama sarvān mahārathān nirjitya,
saṅkhye saindhavam avadhīt; kaścit enam na avārayat.
3. Indeed, having conquered all my great charioteers (mahārathas) in battle, Pārtha (Arjuna) killed Saindhava in the conflict; no one could stop him.
सर्वथा हतमेवैतत्कौरवाणां महद्बलम् ।
न ह्यस्य विद्यते त्राता साक्षादपि पुरंदरः ॥४॥
4. sarvathā hatamevaitatkauravāṇāṁ mahadbalam ,
na hyasya vidyate trātā sākṣādapi puraṁdaraḥ.
4. sarvathā hatam eva etat kauravāṇām mahat balam
na hi asya vidyate trātā sākṣāt api purandaraḥ
4. sarvathā etat kauravāṇām mahat balam hatam eva (asti) hi,
asya trātā sākṣāt purandaraḥ api na vidyate.
4. In every way, this great strength (army) of the Kauravas is indeed destroyed. For truly, there is no protector for it, not even Purandara (Indra) himself.
यमुपाश्रित्य संग्रामे कृतः शस्त्रसमुद्यमः ।
स कर्णो निर्जितः संख्ये हतश्चैव जयद्रथः ॥५॥
5. yamupāśritya saṁgrāme kṛtaḥ śastrasamudyamaḥ ,
sa karṇo nirjitaḥ saṁkhye hataścaiva jayadrathaḥ.
5. yam upāśritya saṃgrāme kṛtaḥ śastrasamudyamaḥ sa
karṇaḥ nirjitaḥ saṃkhye hataḥ ca eva jayadrathaḥ
5. yam upāśritya saṃgrāme śastrasamudyamaḥ kṛtaḥ,
sa karṇaḥ saṃkhye nirjitaḥ ca eva jayadrathaḥ hataḥ
5. That Karṇa, relying on whom the raising of weapons was undertaken in battle, was defeated in combat, and Jayadratha too was killed.
परुषाणि सभामध्ये प्रोक्तवान्यः स्म पाण्डवान् ।
स कर्णो निर्जितः संख्ये सैन्धवश्च निपातितः ॥६॥
6. paruṣāṇi sabhāmadhye proktavānyaḥ sma pāṇḍavān ,
sa karṇo nirjitaḥ saṁkhye saindhavaśca nipātitaḥ.
6. paruṣāṇi sabhāmadhye proktavān yaḥ sma pāṇḍavān sa
karṇaḥ nirjitaḥ saṃkhye saindhavaḥ ca nipātitaḥ
6. yaḥ sabhāmadhye pāṇḍavān paruṣāṇi proktavān sma,
sa karṇaḥ saṃkhye nirjitaḥ ca saindhavaḥ nipātitaḥ
6. That Karṇa, who spoke harsh words to the Pāṇḍavas in the midst of the assembly, was defeated in combat, and the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha) was struck down.
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य शमं याचन्तमच्युतम् ।
तृणवत्तमहं मन्ये स कर्णो निर्जितो युधि ॥७॥
7. yasya vīryaṁ samāśritya śamaṁ yācantamacyutam ,
tṛṇavattamahaṁ manye sa karṇo nirjito yudhi.
7. yasya vīryam samāśritya śamam yācantam acyutam
tṛṇavat tam aham manye sa karṇaḥ nirjitaḥ yudhi
7. yasya vīryam samāśritya aham śamam yācantam acyutam tam tṛṇavat manye,
sa karṇaḥ yudhi nirjitaḥ
7. That Karṇa, relying on whose valor I considered Acyuta, who was imploring for peace, to be insignificant like a blade of grass, was defeated in battle.
एवं क्लान्तमना राजन्नुपायाद्द्रोणमीक्षितुम् ।
आगस्कृत्सर्वलोकस्य पुत्रस्ते भरतर्षभ ॥८॥
8. evaṁ klāntamanā rājannupāyāddroṇamīkṣitum ,
āgaskṛtsarvalokasya putraste bharatarṣabha.
8. evam klāntamanā rājan upāyāt droṇam īkṣitum
āgaskṛt sarvalokasya putraḥ te bharatarṣabha
8. rājan bharatarṣabha,
evam klāntamanā sarvalokasya āgaskṛt te putraḥ droṇam īkṣitum upāyāt
8. Thus, O king, O best of Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), your son, the offender of all people, approached Droṇa with a weary mind to see him.
ततस्तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ कुरूणां वैशसं महत् ।
परान्विजयतश्चापि धार्तराष्ट्रान्निमज्जतः ॥९॥
9. tatastatsarvamācakhyau kurūṇāṁ vaiśasaṁ mahat ,
parānvijayataścāpi dhārtarāṣṭrānnimajjataḥ.
9. tataḥ tat sarvam ācakhyau kurūṇām vaiśasam mahat
parān vijayataḥ ca api dhārtarāṣṭrān nimajjataḥ
9. tataḥ saḥ kurūṇām mahat vaiśasam tat sarvam ācakhyau,
parān vijayataḥ api dhārtarāṣṭrān nimajjataḥ ca
9. Then he related all that great destruction of the Kurus, describing how the Dhārtarāṣṭras, even while conquering enemies, were (themselves) sinking into ruin.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
पश्य मूर्धावसिक्तानामाचार्य कदनं कृतम् ।
कृत्वा प्रमुखतः शूरं भीष्मं मम पितामहम् ॥१०॥
10. duryodhana uvāca ,
paśya mūrdhāvasiktānāmācārya kadanaṁ kṛtam ,
kṛtvā pramukhataḥ śūraṁ bhīṣmaṁ mama pitāmaham.
10. duryodhanaḥ uvāca paśya mūrdhāvasiktānām ācārya kadanam
kṛtam kṛtvā pramukhataḥ śūram bhīṣmam mama pitāmaham
10. duryodhanaḥ uvāca ācārya,
mūrdhāvasiktānām kadanam kṛtam paśya,
mama śūram pitāmaham bhīṣmam pramukhataḥ kṛtvā
10. Duryodhana said: "O teacher, behold the slaughter inflicted upon these noble warriors, after my heroic grandfather Bhīṣma was placed at the front."
तं निहत्य प्रलुब्धोऽयं शिखण्डी पूर्णमानसः ।
पाञ्चालैः सहितः सर्वैः सेनाग्रमभिकर्षति ॥११॥
11. taṁ nihatya pralubdho'yaṁ śikhaṇḍī pūrṇamānasaḥ ,
pāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ senāgramabhikarṣati.
11. tam nihatya pralubdhaḥ ayam śikhaṇḍī pūrṇamānasaḥ
pāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ senāgram abhikarṣati
11. ayam pralubdhaḥ pūrṇamānasaḥ śikhaṇḍī tam nihatya,
sarvaiḥ pāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ,
senāgram abhikarṣati
11. Having struck him (Bhīṣma) down, this eager (pralubdha) Śikhaṇḍī, with a fully satisfied mind, accompanied by all the Pāñcālas, is now advancing at the forefront of the army.
अपरश्चापि दुर्धर्षः शिष्यस्ते सव्यसाचिना ।
अक्षौहिणीः सप्त हत्वा हतो राजा जयद्रथः ॥१२॥
12. aparaścāpi durdharṣaḥ śiṣyaste savyasācinā ,
akṣauhiṇīḥ sapta hatvā hato rājā jayadrathaḥ.
12. aparaḥ ca api durdharṣaḥ śiṣyaḥ te savyasācinā
akṣauhiṇīḥ sapta hatvā hataḥ rājā jayadrathaḥ
12. ca api aparaḥ durdharṣaḥ te śiṣyaḥ savyasācinā,
अक्षौहिणीः सप्त हत्वा,
राजा जयद्रथः हतः
12. And also, your formidable disciple (Arjuna), the ambidextrous one (Savyasācin), after destroying seven akṣauhiṇīs, King Jayadratha was killed (by him).
अस्मद्विजयकामानां सुहृदामुपकारिणाम् ।
गन्तास्मि कथमानृण्यं गतानां यमसादनम् ॥१३॥
13. asmadvijayakāmānāṁ suhṛdāmupakāriṇām ,
gantāsmi kathamānṛṇyaṁ gatānāṁ yamasādanam.
13. asmat vijaya kāmānām suhṛdām upakāriṇām gantā
asmi katham ānṛṇyam gatānām yama sādanam
13. aham asmat vijaya kāmānām suhṛdām upakāriṇām
yama sādanam gatānām ānṛṇyam katham gantā asmi
13. How can I attain freedom from debt (ānṛṇyam) to those benefactors, my friends, who desired our victory and have now gone to the abode of Yama?
ये मदर्थं परीप्सन्ति वसुधां वसुधाधिपाः ।
ते हित्वा वसुधैश्वर्यं वसुधामधिशेरते ॥१४॥
14. ye madarthaṁ parīpsanti vasudhāṁ vasudhādhipāḥ ,
te hitvā vasudhaiśvaryaṁ vasudhāmadhiśerate.
14. ye mat artham parīpsanti vasudhām vasudhā adhipāḥ
te hitvā vasudhā aiśvaryam vasudhām adhiśerate
14. ye vasudhā adhipāḥ mat artham vasudhām parīpsanti
te vasudhā aiśvaryam hitvā vasudhām adhiśerate
14. Those kings, rulers of the earth, who intensely desired the earth for my sake, they, having abandoned their earthly sovereignty, now lie upon the earth (in death).
सोऽहं कापुरुषः कृत्वा मित्राणां क्षयमीदृशम् ।
नाश्वमेधसहस्रेण पातुमात्मानमुत्सहे ॥१५॥
15. so'haṁ kāpuruṣaḥ kṛtvā mitrāṇāṁ kṣayamīdṛśam ,
nāśvamedhasahasreṇa pātumātmānamutsahe.
15. saḥ aham kāpuruṣaḥ kṛtvā mitrāṇām kṣayam īdṛśam
na aśvamedhasahasreṇa pātum ātmānam utsahe
15. saḥ aham kāpuruṣaḥ īdṛśam mitrāṇām kṣayam kṛtvā
aśvamedhasahasreṇa ātmānam pātum na utsahe
15. Having brought about such a destruction of my friends, I, a despicable person, am not able to protect myself (ātman) even with a thousand horse Vedic rituals (yajña).
मम लुब्धस्य पापस्य तथा धर्मापचायिनः ।
व्यायच्छन्तो जिगीषन्तः प्राप्ता वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥१६॥
16. mama lubdhasya pāpasya tathā dharmāpacāyinaḥ ,
vyāyacchanto jigīṣantaḥ prāptā vaivasvatakṣayam.
16. mama lubdhasya pāpasya tathā dharma apacāyinaḥ
vyāyacchantaḥ jigīṣantaḥ prāptāḥ vaivasvata kṣayam
16. mama lubdhasya pāpasya tathā dharma apacāyinaḥ
vyāyacchantaḥ jigīṣantaḥ vaivasvata kṣayam prāptāḥ
16. Striving and desiring victory for me - the greedy, the sinful, and the one diminishing natural law (dharma) - they reached the abode of Yama (Vaivasvata), the destroyer.
कथं पतितवृत्तस्य पृथिवी सुहृदां द्रुहः ।
विवरं नाशकद्दातुं मम पार्थिवसंसदि ॥१७॥
17. kathaṁ patitavṛttasya pṛthivī suhṛdāṁ druhaḥ ,
vivaraṁ nāśakaddātuṁ mama pārthivasaṁsadi.
17. katham patitavṛttasya pṛthivī suhṛdām druhaḥ
vivaram na aśakat dātum mama pārthivasamsadi
17. pṛthivī patitavṛttasya suhṛdām druhaḥ mama
pārthivasamsadi vivaram dātum na aśakat katham
17. How is it that the earth did not open up a chasm to swallow me, a person of degraded conduct and a betrayer of friends, while I was in the assembly of kings?
सोऽहं रुधिरसिक्ताङ्गं राज्ञां मध्ये पितामहम् ।
शयानं नाशकं त्रातुं भीष्ममायोधने हतम् ॥१८॥
18. so'haṁ rudhirasiktāṅgaṁ rājñāṁ madhye pitāmaham ,
śayānaṁ nāśakaṁ trātuṁ bhīṣmamāyodhane hatam.
18. saḥ aham rudhirasiktāṅgam rājñām madhye pitāmaham
śayānam na aśakam trātum bhīṣmam āyodhane hatam
18. saḥ aham rudhirasiktāṅgam rājñām madhye śayānam
āyodhane hatam pitāmaham bhīṣmam trātum na aśakam
18. Such was I that I could not save grandfather Bhishma, who was lying among the kings with his limbs drenched in blood, having been slain in battle.
तं मामनार्यपुरुषं मित्रद्रुहमधार्मिकम् ।
किं स वक्ष्यति दुर्धर्षः समेत्य परलोकजित् ॥१९॥
19. taṁ māmanāryapuruṣaṁ mitradruhamadhārmikam ,
kiṁ sa vakṣyati durdharṣaḥ sametya paralokajit.
19. tam mām anāryapuruṣam mitradruham adhārmikam
kim saḥ vakṣyati durdharṣaḥ sametya paralokajit
19. durdharṣaḥ paralokajit saḥ sametya tam mām
anāryapuruṣam mitradruham adhārmikam kim vakṣyati
19. What will that unassailable conqueror of the other world (Bhishma) say when he meets me, such an ignoble person, a betrayer of friends, and one who acts against natural law (dharma)?
जलसंधं महेष्वासं पश्य सात्यकिना हतम् ।
मदर्थमुद्यतं शूरं प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा महारथम् ॥२०॥
20. jalasaṁdhaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ paśya sātyakinā hatam ,
madarthamudyataṁ śūraṁ prāṇāṁstyaktvā mahāratham.
20. jalasandham maheṣvāsam paśya sātyakinā hatam
madartham udyatam śūram prāṇān tyaktvā mahāratham
20. paśya jalasandham maheṣvāsam śūram mahāratham
sātyakinā hatam madartham udyatam prāṇān tyaktvā
20. Behold Jalasandha, the great archer, a hero and a great warrior, slain by Satyaki, who was prepared for my sake and had given up his life.
काम्बोजं निहतं दृष्ट्वा तथालम्बुसमेव च ।
अन्यान्बहूंश्च सुहृदो जीवितार्थोऽद्य को मम ॥२१॥
21. kāmbojaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā tathālambusameva ca ,
anyānbahūṁśca suhṛdo jīvitārtho'dya ko mama.
21. kāmbojam nihatam dṛṣṭvā tathā alambusam eva ca
anyān bahūn ca suhṛdaḥ jīvitārthaḥ adya kaḥ mama
21. adya mama jīvitārthaḥ kaḥ kāmbojam tathā
alambusam ca anyān bahūn suhṛdaḥ nihatam dṛṣṭvā
21. Seeing Kamboja slain, and Alambusa also, along with many other friends, what meaning does my life hold today?
व्यायच्छन्तो हताः शूरा मदर्थे येऽपराङ्मुखाः ।
यतमानाः परं शक्त्या विजेतुमहितान्मम ॥२२॥
22. vyāyacchanto hatāḥ śūrā madarthe ye'parāṅmukhāḥ ,
yatamānāḥ paraṁ śaktyā vijetumahitānmama.
22. vyāyacchantaḥ hatāḥ śūrāḥ madarthe ye aparāṅmukhāḥ
yatamānāḥ param śaktyā vijetum ahitān mama
22. ye madarthe aparāṅmukhāḥ param śaktyā mama ahitān
vijetum yatamānāḥ vyāyacchantaḥ śūrāḥ hatāḥ
22. Those brave warriors who strove unflinchingly for my sake, exerting their utmost strength (śakti) to conquer my enemies, have been killed.
तेषां गत्वाहमानृण्यमद्य शक्त्या परंतप ।
तर्पयिष्यामि तानेव जलेन यमुनामनु ॥२३॥
23. teṣāṁ gatvāhamānṛṇyamadya śaktyā paraṁtapa ,
tarpayiṣyāmi tāneva jalena yamunāmanu.
23. teṣām gatvā aham ānṛṇyam adya śaktyā paraṃtapa
tarpayiṣyāmi tān eva jalena yamunām anu
23. parantapa adya aham teṣām ānṛṇyam gatvā śaktyā
tān eva yamunām anu jalena tarpayiṣyāmi
23. O tormentor of foes, having acknowledged their sacrifice, I shall today, with my own strength (śakti), free myself from the debt (ānṛṇya) owed to them. I will surely satisfy them with water along the Yamuna River.
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वर ।
इष्टापूर्तेन च शपे वीर्येण च सुतैरपि ॥२४॥
24. satyaṁ te pratijānāmi sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ vara ,
iṣṭāpūrtena ca śape vīryeṇa ca sutairapi.
24. satyam te pratijānāmi sarvaśastrabṛtām vara
iṣṭāpūrtena ca śape vīryeṇa ca sutaiḥ api
24. sarvaśastrabṛtām vara,
te satyam pratijānāmi.
iṣṭāpūrtena ca vīryeṇa ca sutaiḥ api śape.
24. O best among all weapon-bearers, I truly promise you this. I swear by the merits of my sacrifices and good deeds, by my valor, and even by my sons.
निहत्य तान्रणे सर्वान्पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवैः सह ।
शान्तिं लब्धास्मि तेषां वा रणे गन्ता सलोकताम् ॥२५॥
25. nihatya tānraṇe sarvānpāñcālānpāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
śāntiṁ labdhāsmi teṣāṁ vā raṇe gantā salokatām.
25. nihatya tān raṇe sarvān pāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
śāntim labdhā asmi teṣām vā raṇe gantā salokatām
25. pāṇḍavaiḥ saha raṇe sarvān tān pāñcālān nihatya
śāntim labdhā asmi vā teṣām salokatām raṇe gantā
25. Having killed all those Pañcālas in battle, accompanied by the Pāṇḍavas, I have either attained peace, or I shall go to the same realm (salokatā) as them in battle.
न हीदानीं सहाया मे परीप्सन्त्यनुपस्कृताः ।
श्रेयो हि पाण्डून्मन्यन्ते न तथास्मान्महाभुज ॥२६॥
26. na hīdānīṁ sahāyā me parīpsantyanupaskṛtāḥ ,
śreyo hi pāṇḍūnmanyante na tathāsmānmahābhuja.
26. na hi idānīm sahāyāḥ me parīpsanti anupaskṛtāḥ
śreyaḥ hi pāṇḍūn manyante na tathā asmān mahābhuja
26. mahābhuja hi idānīm me anupaskṛtāḥ sahāyāḥ na
parīpsanti hi pāṇḍūn śreyaḥ manyante na tathā asmān
26. Indeed, my allies, who are now unsupported/unhonored, do not wish to help. For, O mighty-armed one, they consider the Pāṇḍavas to be more beneficial, and not us in the same way.
स्वयं हि मृत्युर्विहितः सत्यसंधेन संयुगे ।
भवानुपेक्षां कुरुते सुशिष्यत्वाद्धनंजये ॥२७॥
27. svayaṁ hi mṛtyurvihitaḥ satyasaṁdhena saṁyuge ,
bhavānupekṣāṁ kurute suśiṣyatvāddhanaṁjaye.
27. svayam hi mṛtyuḥ vihitaḥ satyasaṃdhena saṃyuge
bhavān upekṣām kurute suśiṣyatvāt dhanaṃjaye
27. hi saṃyuge satyasaṃdhena svayam mṛtyuḥ vihitaḥ
bhavān dhanaṃjaye suśiṣyatvāt upekṣām kurute
27. Indeed, death has been brought upon himself in battle by one whose vow (satyasaṃdha) is true. Yet you, out of excellent discipleship (suśiṣyatva) towards Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), neglect (upekṣā) [your duty].
अतो विनिहताः सर्वे येऽस्मज्जयचिकीर्षवः ।
कर्णमेव तु पश्यामि संप्रत्यस्मज्जयैषिणम् ॥२८॥
28. ato vinihatāḥ sarve ye'smajjayacikīrṣavaḥ ,
karṇameva tu paśyāmi saṁpratyasmajjayaiṣiṇam.
28. ataḥ vinihatāḥ sarve ye asmat-jaya-cikīrṣavaḥ
karṇam eva tu paśyāmi samprati asmat-jaya-eṣiṇam
28. ataḥ ye asmat-jaya-cikīrṣavaḥ sarve vinihatāḥ tu
samprati karṇam eva asmat-jaya-eṣiṇam paśyāmi
28. Therefore, all those who desired our victory have been slain. But now, I see only Karṇa as the one desiring our victory.
यो हि मित्रमविज्ञाय याथातथ्येन मन्दधीः ।
मित्रार्थे योजयत्येनं तस्य सोऽर्थोऽवसीदति ॥२९॥
29. yo hi mitramavijñāya yāthātathyena mandadhīḥ ,
mitrārthe yojayatyenaṁ tasya so'rtho'vasīdati.
29. yaḥ hi mitram avijñāya yāthātathyena mandadhīḥ
mitrārthe yojayati enam tasya saḥ arthaḥ avasīdati
29. mandadhīḥ yaḥ hi yāthātathyena mitram avijñāya
mitrārthe enam yojayati tasya saḥ arthaḥ avasīdati
29. Indeed, a foolish person who employs someone for the sake of a friend without truly knowing that person's true nature, his purpose comes to naught.
तादृग्रूपमिदं कार्यं कृतं मम सुहृद्ब्रुवैः ।
मोहाल्लुब्धस्य पापस्य जिह्माचारैस्ततस्ततः ॥३०॥
30. tādṛgrūpamidaṁ kāryaṁ kṛtaṁ mama suhṛdbruvaiḥ ,
mohāllubdhasya pāpasya jihmācāraistatastataḥ.
30. tādṛgrūpam idam kāryam kṛtam mama suhṛdbruvaiḥ
mohāt lubdhasya pāpasya jihmācāraiḥ tatas tataḥ
30. mama lubdhasya pāpasya idam tādṛgrūpam kāryam
suhṛdbruvaiḥ mohāt jihmācāraiḥ tatas tataḥ kṛtam
30. This kind of deed was done for my greedy and sinful self by those who merely call themselves friends, who, acting out of delusion, engaged in crooked conduct everywhere.
हतो जयद्रथश्चैव सौमदत्तिश्च वीर्यवान् ।
अभीषाहाः शूरसेनाः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः ॥३१॥
31. hato jayadrathaścaiva saumadattiśca vīryavān ,
abhīṣāhāḥ śūrasenāḥ śibayo'tha vasātayaḥ.
31. hataḥ jayadrathaḥ ca eva saumadattiḥ ca vīryavān
abhīṣāhāḥ śūrasenāḥ śibayaḥ atha vasātayaḥ
31. jayadrathaḥ ca eva hataḥ vīryavān saumadattiḥ ca
hataḥ abhīṣāhāḥ śūrasenāḥ atha śibayaḥ vasātayaḥ
31. Jayadratha was slain, and also the mighty Saumadatti, along with the Abhiṣāhas, the Śūrasenas, the Śibayas, and the Vasātis.
सोऽहमद्य गमिष्यामि यत्र ते पुरुषर्षभाः ।
हता मदर्थं संग्रामे युध्यमानाः किरीटिना ॥३२॥
32. so'hamadya gamiṣyāmi yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
hatā madarthaṁ saṁgrāme yudhyamānāḥ kirīṭinā.
32. saḥ aham adya gamiṣyāmi yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ
hatāḥ madartham saṃgrāme yudhyamānāḥ kirīṭinā
32. saḥ aham adya yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ madartham
saṃgrāme kirīṭinā yudhyamānāḥ hatāḥ gamiṣyāmi
32. Therefore, I will go today to where those best of men (puruṣa-ṛṣabhāḥ) were slain for my sake in battle, fighting against the crowned one (Arjuna).
न हि मे जीवितेनार्थस्तानृते पुरुषर्षभान् ।
आचार्यः पाण्डुपुत्राणामनुजानातु नो भवान् ॥३३॥
33. na hi me jīvitenārthastānṛte puruṣarṣabhān ,
ācāryaḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmanujānātu no bhavān.
33. na hi me jīvitena arthaḥ tān ṛte puruṣarṣabhān
ācāryaḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām anujānātu naḥ bhavān
33. ācāryaḥ bhavān naḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām anujānātu hi
me jīvitena tān puruṣarṣabhān ṛte na arthaḥ
33. Truly, my life has no purpose without those valiant men. O teacher (guru), may your honor grant us permission concerning the Pāṇḍavas.
